any one going just got a room this morning, been hard since UVA is having Homecomming, if can't find one call super 8 they had a few. what time have they been comming on? going to be a good night to party after show.
UVA homecoming is throwing a wrench in things. i can't find any hotel. super 8 is sold out.
keep checking about 3 times a day at more then one hotel a room will pop up
Jumped on the hotel thing early due to the football schedule. We're staying at the Omni, but it's ridiculously $$$. Dividing by three makes it tolerable, and we needed 'knee-walking' distance ;). It's at the opposite end of the pedestrian mall from the venue. They might have rooms: http://www.omnihotels.com/FindAHotel/Charlottesvil le.aspx
Set lists are heating up, looking forward to a good one. Only one I can make this tour . . . damned responsibility!
what time has he been coming on b/c the pavillion has a 11pm sharp curfe? any help
We are going to stay outside of C-ville due to the no hotel rooms on the city. This place will be packed!
Anyone got any hits on setlists for C-ville? Will we get the Terrapin thats been done for soundcheck? We could get the other one as that is done about every other show. And they say that they are just smoking TOO out! lol
Hope security is pretty cool. Cannot wait, this is the only show that I"ll get to this tour.
whatch out for smoking they watch for it pertty heavy otherwise cool place and probaly pat down before commuing in since dead related did for panic and ratdog
also they want let you throw it away they will take you to jail just heads up
Are we going to get the other half of Terrapin, TOO, Maybe a Shakedown tonight?
I'm hoping for another Night they Drove Old Dixie Down, as they warmed it up a couple of nights ago and CVille is the perfect place to play it.
I hoping for two second sets, because they have been smoking, all tour.
Phil, Let's start with Set Two!

This little town hardly knew what hit it this evening. Man this band can play! Evenings not over yet.....more later.
Thank you PHIL!!!
great show last nite!!!! Jacki is very, very good. A special talent. Sounds perfect. lots of fun. hopefully this group of PL&F has a extended run beyond a few tours.
Have to say as much as I've missed PLQ, the show last night blew me away. The energy, how well these guys meshed, the joy that was there.....had 4th row just off center and Phil looked like he was having a complete blast the whole night. The Dark Star/Eyes/Sugaree had the roof (if there'd been one)just blown off the place...Jackie completely tore up Sugaree, place wasn't sold out but the energy level and noise at the end of Sugaree would have left you thinking we were back in RFK. Have to majorly second Mark, Jackie is something else...standing there watching him, with a Jerry doll perched on the speaker just behind him, all I could think was how much Jerry would have liked this kid...damn I can't believe this is the only show I'm catching on this tour....have to go see if the Baltimore show is sold out...b/c I want more!!!!
I was extremely impressed by Jackie in all aspects of his game. Phil was impressive even when the jams seem to come up a bit short. The whole nite had bits and pieces of good music, and mad scientist experimentation.
They came strong. I just cant say enough good things about Jackie, espiscally after that Sugaree. Both on vocals and on guitar. He was a Monster.
>>>the energy level and noise at the end of Sugaree would have left you thinking we were back in RFK.
ABOSLUTELY!!! Phil eveb acknowledged that. Sugaree was the goods last night. Outragous.
Details forthcoming.
i had no problem smoking, and i was RIGHT up front in the General Admission section, everyone was lighting up, dancing in the aisles and having a good time. the scence was great, i thought it was a great town, and venue for Phil to play.
I got there early and heard the soundcheck, they played candyman and Unbroken Chain, the latter which Phil made the band start over several times and talked the rest of the band through it, i would expect a breakout of the song within the next couple of shows.
Golden Road is a sweet opener, had the whole place dancing! i was so impressed with Jackie's interpretations of these songs. I especially like how he changes the phrasings and makes them his own. He also took several tasty solos throughout the night and is definitly finding his place in this band! WATCH OUT!
The Birdsong in the first set was kind of sloppy but they recovered well.
Big River may have been the highlight of the 1st set, Larry Campbell is an amazing guitarist and i really enjoy him taking the lead on vocals as well. He was surely summoning the banjo pickin style of Jerry on Big River.
wanted to see more of the jackie material, but gone wanderin filled my appetite well during the first set.
I feel the need to mention how superb Steve Molitz played throughout the show as well, particularly during the Darkstar>Eyes>Darkstar segment.
Althea was long... and VERY tight, The Wheel was bound to cover just a little more ground. This Wheel's on Fire showcased Larry's superb vocals once again Darkstar>Eyes>Darkstar, need i say more!
Perhaps the performance of the night was Sugaree, Jackie took the song to a level that may have ranked amoungst the best! He really makes the tune his own, and the southern bluesy style is where he shines.
Thank you Phil and Friends for the never ending inspiration. I love how you each grow with each performance and how the mirrors my own expierences seeing shows and walking down that Golden Road.
Peace.
Geez, I could copy Chris's review almost verbatim.
Bertha had a different funky feel, and again, Jackie was all over it.
Molitz was perfect. I could hear him just fine and everything he added was spot on.
Larry smoked both his songs, Big River was cooked well done. He is a perfect fit with that song. Wheels on Fire showed his vocal range.
Althea - Tight and Groovy
Wheel was done very nicely and deliberately.
DS>Eyes (phil messed up a line and laughed out loud)>DS has some really good parts and pieces.
Sugeree - Could be a PLF Sugaree for the books. Unbelieveable. Jackie was supreme on vocals and guitar, but with FEELING. I mean you could hear him feel it. He was and it was that good. I was blown away by the band's performance of that song.
The crowd heard that song. The sharing of that "feeling" was right there. .Phil acknowledge it as well. Not that it matters in the grand scheme, but that song was overwhelming to me, at a time where very little else lived.
NFA - the crowd loved. I wanted to hear Unbroken Chain but, everyone seemed to enjoy it, and thats what matters.
It was a real good time.
Thank Phil.
And as for Phil, he was just great.
Sounded great.
Looked great.
Played great; dropped some monster bombs.
Bandleader and Musician Extraordinaire.
So thanks again Phil.
during the Unbroken sound check Phil says;
" Give us a lil winds howl there, Steeevie"
and he did.
My $.02: I concur with the other reviews!
I wasn't sure what to expect out of this latest rendition of PLF but kept an open mind and man, was NOT disappointed at all, in fact, this band blew me away! Maybe Jackie just needed some time to warm up to his role in this band and grow into it, but he was dead on. I'm a big fan now, headed to the record store tomorrow to pick up some of his stuff.
Phil as always is just the MAN. I never, ever, get tired of hearing Phil reinterpret and reinvent the music, it's just awesome to have the privelege to see this stuff live still.
Took a long time deadhead bro who somehow had not seen Phil do his thing yet. He had checked out The Dead in Red Rocks a couple years back and it didn't do it for him . . . well, we have a new Phil phan now, it was like "what took me so long!?!"
Great venue as well, what a cool place.
perfect day and night.
sugaree was prolly the best I've ever seen.
more later
It was a great show for sure. I was hoping they would bring out the acoustic set that I'd been hearing about, but I know they don't do that every night. I wish they would have played one or two more of Jackie's songs, but how can I complain about not getting enough of him after that Sugaree performance? Everyone in the band was phenominal.
Sorry I couldnt make it by the zoner pregame. My out of town guests rolled in barely on time and I practically walked in as Phil was coming on.
In fact, as I was walking in, I spotted you Liberty and had to run up and introduce myself. It was a short encounter, but it was that time in the show when everyone is trying to find their places and I didnt want to hold you up from finding your hubby and little one. Nice meeting Mrs. Sundawg also. First zoners for this Guy.
Phil mentioned at one point he loved the venue and was visibly taken aback by the accolades after Cosmic Charlie. The crowd was going apeshit.
I dont have much to add to the fine reviews Ive seen around here other than I didnt stop moving the entire night and this band has a great ability to breathe new life into songs that were fairly flat for me with the dead. Songs like big river and sugaree can be hit or miss if you dont sell em and these guys can do it! The setlist doesnt look to me like a barnburner, but they really got the most outta every song.
Jackie is a great fit for this band and Larry is really doing more than in previous incarnations I believe.
Molitz looks really busy up there and he seems to be feeling it, but I just dont hear much of what he'e playing, maybe just turned down too low. I really like what i heard from him the coupla time he peeked out the din.
Overheard leaving the show......"shows with darkstar are the only ones that count." wtf??.....made me chuckle.
Perfect day here in the 'Ville yesterday. Everyone that came seemed to really dig the place....i love it here.
and as a last little note....
where the hell were the police after the show??
multiple tanks on most of the sidestreets feeding away from the mall.
balloons EVERYWHERE....wierd to see here.
oh and I stayed at the Eames Coleman Trio for a good while and Mr Molo didnt come while I was there. Sorry about the wild goose chase if anyone went outta their way.
Ros, were you there?? I think I saw you after the show.
onward to Baltimore!!
..Sounds like JACKIE is morphing into the famous "JACK-O-LANTERN"...what they been feeding the lad?:-)
Regarding Sugaree --
I saw Jackie at Joe's Pub in NYC this summer and he played Friend of the Devil and Sugaree. When he played Sugaree he played piano and it was quite impressive.
I knew right then that he was going to fit in to Phil's band just fine once he got over being possibly intimidated by the company he is keeping.
Glad to hear it's happening.
It must be blowing his mind to be asked to step up to the plate with Lesh and Campbell and Molo. They probably don't have to feed him anything except vibes ....
I was at this show. Unfortunately my friend was with me who got totally fucked up on like 3 different drugs. He started puking everywhere and he passed out like 4 times...so we had to leave and go babysit him.
Eyes and Dark Star are my favorite songs, so I missed the Eyes sandwich and I hate him for that. We drove 16 hours to see this show and he fucked it up for us by getting too fucking high.
Goddamnit.
Here's a couple pix. More to come.
Great show, great venue, great night, great scene.
Nice to meet you Mr. Bensen!
Nice pics! You must have been right by us as this was our view from our seats.
Go to etree, there is a great recording of this show, sounds awesome!
Have the tour jones really bad, but got responsiblities so that I can pay for tix on then next go around. Phil will tour till he cannot stand I do believe. He is in this for his love for making the music that we all love!
Thanks Rusty. I wandered around a bit. My seats were in row 13 but I spent a lot of time right up at the stage between those speaker cabinet (thanks Mr. Benson and others). Woo-woo when the bass bombs dropped! I was shooting with a fairly short lens but it had a wide aperture to let in a lot of light (50mm x f1.4). I made some of the pix black-and-white where the red stage lighting totally washed out the color image. And it was red a lot!
I also liked the historic feel of the black-and-white -- it emphasizes the grat vibe of a 67-year-old artist with full command of his powers mentoring a 27-year-old with a lot of promise. As someone else said that night watching Jackie, his competence was much greater than his confidence that night. But that was before Sugaree blew the roof off!
Good shots,
Do you know the guy in the first pic?
I met the guy in the first pic at the parking, but forgot his name. Cool guy, we had a good time. He's from Charlotte, N.C and does some kind of Web business. He was with a guy named Ken Foust who plays guitar on Tom Constanten's latest recording.

Oops, duplicate
have been kind of out of the philzone, keep up with setlists, etc, loop for a while now. went down to this show having no idea what they were playing, how the were sounding, or what songs might be up in the rotation this night. gotta say, it was a pretty cool way of doing it.
anyhow, so we get down there and check into our hotel. while waiting for our cab to the venue we met a girl who also was going to the show. we said that she could fit in our cab with us. on the way there, she brought up the philzone and it turns out it was sundawg's wife. pretty random. nice meeting you though, hope you had a good time at the show!
anyhow, as for the music, i thought it was great. it way exceeded my expectations. i thought golden road was a great opener. bertha and candyman were good. bird song was when i really started getting into it though. phil sounded awesome on this one. big river was a nice surprise with larry singing! the greene song sounded pretty good to me too. and the cold rain was a great call as the set closer.
althea was a great way to open the second set. and the wheel that followed really kept the crowd energy up. wheels on fire was pretty good, but nothing mindblowing to me. i was really glad to hear cryptical as it's always been one of my favorites to hear phil bust out. dark star was really good i thought and i loved how phil sang all of the lyrics to it. i am sure he's been doing this the whole tour but it was a great surprise to me. i never really understood why he broke up the verses between different singers for as long as i can remember. i could feel that eyes coming a mile away and when it hit, it was great! sugaree was a good rocker and cosmic charlie was a surprise ending to the set. nfa was a great encore that got the crowd into it in a big way.
let's see, general closing thoughts. greene was way better than i thought he'd be. he just seemed really humble to me and seemed like he understood his place in this band. way more than, say, cr or something. the kid was good. larry smoked, as he always does, and particle dude really rips up those keys. the venue was awesome and everyone i talked to there seemed really cool and really into the music. i had seen mule in dc the night before and, while that was fun, it was nothing compared to this show. there is a huge difference for me between another rock show and church.
looking forward to baltimore tomorrow night!!
That's Ken's twin brother Doug, they are Charlotte fixtures, I've known them since 9th grade, both funloving crazies and music lovers.
Ken also founded the band IKO way back in the 80's, some of you east coasters may remember them.
Was just funny seiing the pic here, I hung out with them during the break some, wish I'd seen some zoners.
Thanks for posting the pics, Randall! Being in between those speaker things was intense! I still haven't come down from this show. My wife says I'm like a different dude.
Was Sundawg's wife like totally glowing or what?!?!? Her energy lit up the sky! And what's up with Liberty's brainiac son? What 8 year old reads Tolken novels?-)
We got there waaay late, due to some unanticipated and unintentional detours on the way. Wish I had more time to hang, too. Sounds like a common theme.
I've checked the Archive like 10 times today alone, just waiting for this one to be posted!
Well, I only saw the GD 4 times, 94-95(including the last one...). I've seen some fantastic shows in my almost 30 years, but, as I imagine, nothing to compare to the GD at their peak. While I have listened to hundreds of shows years later, I never experienced the GD doing "it" for me and hundreds/thousands/the Infinite as one (in a live setting, please mind you).
While I don't presume to have anything of substance to add to the reviews above, I would like to add my assessment that this show just had something special in spades. I don't think I will ever forget that Sugaree. The crowd in C-Ville was as receptive, engaging, and interesting as the city itself. I've been on a natural buzz for weeks, almost going on a month, due to the wonderful energy during/after that event.
Being able to drive 6 hours back to Pittsburgh and catch the webcast of Atlanta the next night was priceless.
It's a miracle to me that we can still tap into the river this many years later. Shouldn't really continue to surprise me, but it does.
Thank you Phil for continuing to bring the music to our doorsteps.
So today was the first time I have listened to the recording since the show.
It is very solid coming through on tape....er disc.
Again though, the Sugaree cannot be understated.
But Cosmic Charlie is better the second time around. Exceptional.
Phil and these Friends are quite the unit.
Even after 23 years, I am coming to terms with Phil as a musicial genius. Phil as a "lead bass" as fans have termed it, is a great discriptor.
Phil may be the most underrated Bass Player in the last 45 years. If not ever.
Go on home, your mamma's, callin' you......
I haven't listened to it since the show..But I knew at the time that Cosmic Charley was a good un.
Thanks Phil!
