hey now
Iko
Any zoners thinking about a place to meet before the show or do I have to do all the work?
is there a local bar near Sheas? been there before, but have always made it just in time. i know there was a Garcia's Irish Pub, but that was closer to the War Mem. Aud. Need to find a place with cheap drinks and good vibes, any suggestions?
Anyone have 2 extras. Good seats. please email me.
There are more than 20 bars within a five minute walk from Sheas. I like Hemingways, which is a 30 second walk across the street from the Pearl Street entrance to the theater.
Anyone else like to see this band tackle Mystery Train. I think it would be a perfect fit for them. Would love to see them jam this one out. C'mon Phil....Mystery Train for Buff!
I loved the setlist from 2 nights ago. Would love to see how they are working on Loan Me A Dime. Love that tune! Very excited about the show!
since they like covering the band this tour, i would like to see "don't do it"
Are we getting a truckin ?
i hope not, overplayed.
tickets say the Sheas show starts at 7:00 - seems early. When do you think Phil etc. will actually start? Is there another band playing first? Thanks dudes & dudettes...
Phil has been starting 15-20 mins after the ticket times. So make sure your at your seat by 7:15, if you dont want to miss a note. Have a great show everyone, and i do hope you get a Truckin.

Hemmingway's for zoners b4 the show?
looking for 1 good seat - will pay fair $$
"tickets say the Sheas show starts at 7:00 - seems early."
yea that's what i thought too, was assuming an 8:00 start, glad i looked at my tickets this morning
where is everyone gathering b4 the show? Hopefully people are gonna be ready it should be a hot show !
Hemingway's is a bar/restaurant directly across from Shea's at the Pearl Street entrance. There is a band called Sonic Garden (a pretty talented GD tribute band) playing after the show at a place called The Corcodile only a block or so from Shea's on Chippewa St. Lots of bars in that area. Can't wait.

Looks like an interesting first set. How did it sound? Lets hear from some folks that are there.
low spark... prepping for that warren sit in @ nokia!!!!!
Any Warren guest apperance is always SWEET, but Mule is on tour with all shows basically west of the Mississippi from now until after the Phil tour ends. Although I guess Warren could fly back on a Mule day off if the schedule permits.
oh well, didn't do my homework... guess that's not happenin.
doesn't warren own that song, though?
although it does match the foot stomp
(love the foot stomp)
I remember not being able to make the 1/20/79 show at Sheas Theatre and regretting it for many years after. That was the last east coast Dark Star for a long time. The only thing worst than missing that show was watching Tommy Chin night after night, especially at Radio City, update his sign, 366, 367, 368 days since the last Dark Star.
pretty sure this is close:

Phil Lesh is not worthy of seeing multiple shows due to repetitive song selection.
LMAO
and good god bring on NYC
Poor New York.
Its gunna be ugly
They get 9 shows and look at these setlists
Cant get a break
When it rains it pours
Torre gets shit on..
Phil Lesh does repeats..
LOL! Classic...
Hey now!!!!!
Haven't seen Phil and Phriends for awhile now.....
Love that Larry Cambell from past Dylan and Levon Helm's Rambles!!!!!
Can't wait for Glens Falls!!!!!
Anyway, anyone know of any good pre-show spots up around that neck of the woods????
Just a mellow place to chill before the show with a cool brew or nice glass of vino?
Looking forward to some great music,I guess since I have not seen any of the tour thus far the repeats look like good ones anyway.....
Take care ya'll and see yas at Glens Falls, NY!!!!!
I disagree with it not being worth it to go to multiple shows. Yes, there are quite a few repeats. More than any other tour for that matter. You gotta keep in mind Jackie Greene and the repitoir he's got down. You know, he doesnt got it all and you cant blame him. Kids got potential though! Man he brought some great tunes to the table! Phil obviously digs em a lot and me too! If you get a chance to go to a couple shows you'll catch pretty much the jist of all the songs they are playing. But, it wont get done with just 1. You gotta be able to see a hard rain, and a supercede, and a cold black devil..and the list can get quite longer. They have pulled out quite a few tricks out of their sleeves and there is a lot this line-up has to offer. Anyhow, who isnt used to hearing a dead tune over and over again. We're dead heads beacuse we can never get enough!!! And now im starting to really not be able to get enough of the material i just mentioned....Not to mention, how about the acoustic sets!??!!! Anyway, i just wanted to give them a little more credit that i feel, as a fellow zoner, they diserve.
With that said, see you at the next show!!!
When was the last Caution with this band?
1st Caution of the tour!
last night could be interesting seeing they played some Pig and Jackie blows a good harp.
rant about the repeats but I'd rather see them play stuff they have down other than struggle through material that takes a life time to get learnt.
I've seen multiple shows this time with quite a few repeat songs. Each take is different though and each night had a different flavor. My advice? Quicherbichin - especially AT the show - so the rest of us can have some fun without hearing about your problems with it while we are trying to enjoy. Other solutions? Quit going or just loosen up!
10 day break between Syracuse and Nokia. I'm sure they will be re fueling the jets.
Weed out the complainers Phil, weed them out.
Looks like another smokin show. Anyone out there have a review?
You know they'll be practicing new tunes during that break. Nokia will be smoking.
Haven't seen Phil since last summer, but enough already with bitchin' about repeats, just look at the level of repetition on any given Grateful Dead tour. Of course,at this point I'd kill to hear GD play "Don't Ease Me In" and "Little Red Rooster" all night.
So Caution was full song? Jam? Tease?
>>>Haven't seen Phil since last summer, but enough already with bitchin' about repeats, just look at the level of repetition on any given Grateful Dead tour. <<<
Exactly.
I haven't gone and done this yet because I'm not really sure it's worth the effort to try to change people's minds that are already made up, but I bet if I did a find duplicates search on any 5 consecutive sets in 67, 71, 73, 77 (just as examples) there would be a hell of a lot of them.
It's not about the number of repeats, but what you do with the stuff you play, particularly when the underlying basis of a lot of it is exploring within a song.
Phil & Friends ROCKS the house
Shea’s was a beautiful setting for a smoking hot Phil and Friends.
What a way to start a show! Jackie Greene and Friends were on fire from the start with a rollicking Good Morning Little School Girl. It was especially a treat because of Jackie’s obvious youth. Big River kept the rock and roll/rockabilly heat going and then a touch of rockin’ blues with I’m So Gone. Campbell wasn’t quite in the groove yet but it was clear that the boys were gonna have some fun tonight.
We all got teased with some Low Spark of High Heeled Boys. So sue me, I miss Joan, but the band nailed the Wheel. And we were treated to some very trippy jams. A killer Scarlet>Fire ended the first set. I could have died a happy man right then.
The second set blew the roof off the joint. Cosmic Charlie then Althea (Joan who?) Jackie had some issues and left the stage? After a little pause in the action the rest of the crew started jamming. With Jackie’s return we got what I was hoping for, Cryptical Envelopment>The Other One and the bombs started dropping in earnest. Gypsy Woman exploded and Molo caught fire and didn’t let up for the remainder of the night. Help>Slip>Franklin’s Tower went to space and back and Steve Molitz brought his best work. To close the set another Bobby song, Sugar Magnolia, was nailed. Phil’s bombs to end Sugar Mag rattled the entire city!
Lovelight ended the show and although Jackie brought passion, I missed the call and response I enjoy from Pig & Bobby. No matter it was a great finish to an almost flawless performance.
Throughout the show it was obvious that Phil was the conductor of his current rock orchestra. He not only led with his bass but smiles, laughs, but also his gestures. Like the repressed conductor he is Phil also motioned to the boys to pick it up or tone it down. There were guitar fireworks throughout as “Mr. Campbell,” “Boss man,” and Jackie traded licks. And once Molo got revved up he was a monster. Molitz mostly added color and fills in the first set with a few tepid solos. But throughout the second set he really brought his background to the front garnering some quizzical looks and big grins from Phil. Campbell is no Johnny Cash and he definitely isn’t Bob Weir so I tuned out the vocals to Big River. Other than that the vocals were tight and the harmonies were sweet. And like a fine wine Phil’s voice is getting better with age.
My legs are still aching from dancing my ass off and I can’t get the music outta my head.
There was a Leopard skin pill box hat in that first set.
>>>haven't gone and done this yet because I'm not really sure it's worth the effort to try to change people's minds that are already made up, but I bet if I did a find duplicates search on any 5 consecutive sets in 67, 71, 73, 77 (just as examples) there would be a hell of a lot of them.

Just like Ramble on Rose is now Gone Wanderin'? ;)
Thanks Paul. Cant wait for Nokia! You know Phil has alot up his sleeve. :>)
For those of you kvetching about the repetition, how many times did you hear the Dead do another Wharf Rat-Throw-away? How many summer tour Touch of Yecch were inflicted as an encore? Another venue was considered a blank slate as far as repeats went. How many repeats were there at the Riviera or the Orpheum? For the nine nokia shows, there will be some repeats, obviously. it depends on the song, though. I would not mind seeing several Golden Roads. Lighten up and enjoy the ride.
those that are worried about the rotating song selections are not listening to the music....
Looks like a killer show. Can't wait to hear it!!
I am so psyched for Nokia.
MOST IMPORTANT TO ME:
WOULD ALL OF YOU WHO JABBER SO LOUD DURING THE SHOW SHUT THE F--- UP SO WE CAN HEAR THE MUSIC!!!!!!!!
The repeats never sound the same to me, but THAT IS BECAUSE I A LISTENING CLOSELY, not WHINING!

>>>10 day break between Syracuse and Nokia. I'm sure they will be re fueling the jets.
Yep. I have to think with guests and new songs, new york will be quite a run. If he's smart he'll keep the repeats to twice only for each song.
if you are thinking and counting you're in the wrong side of your brain to dig the music. try turning off your mind, relax and float downstream and dance your ass off!
give it up on the repeats guys these are songs you love remember. your gonna see repeats if it bothers you , you should only go to two or three and then you won't be able to complain abot seeing the othe one twice or friend of the devil and if I see one more ripple i'll just stop going...........
Regarding the repeats, ya gotta understand that Jackie began learning these tunes about 3 or 4 months ago and, having attended the Red Rocks show, I can say unequivicolly that he does such beautiful justice, Jerry, Pig, Brent and Keith would be (and likely are) extremely proud. The "kid" has got soul, talent and utter respect for this music. I also point out that I think P&F's has a bunch of days off before the Nokia shows -- my guess is that they'll use some of that time bring in new material. By the way, the Jackie tunes are some bright and unique nice stuff which most Deadheads are unaware of. After the Red Rocks show, I went out and bough a Jackie Greene CD and really dig it.
Anyway, my 2 cents.
Imagine the repeats from the Dead's Radio City Music Hall run.
Must have been unbearable.
Just checked that 8 night run at Radio City.
Most repeated song was played all 8 nights. Ripple.
Oh, the horror!
I cant believe the whiners. do you know how lucky we are to have phil healthy. I dont care if he repeats songs so did the dead. It did not stop me going for years. enjoy the music dont bash it save that for ratbob!!!
It has been 2 years since my last Phil which was also at Sheas (with Scofield, Sless, Robinson & Siegel) and I forgot a couple of things about this experience. They really throw themselves into the abyss during the jams and sometimes I feel that they lose themselves, but then transition into the next song, it becomes blissful. Im too used to see Mule bring a different brand to this type of improvisation and this is welcome. Love the vulnerablitly this brings the music.
The first set opened up quite nicely with Good Morning and Jackie sang great, but it took until half the tune and a Larry Campbell solo before I started to feel the vibe I was looking for. Big River which followed was tastey, although Campbell's vocals are quite restrained, but the playing picked up beautifully throughout the tune. The Pill Box hat was fantastic and Greene and Campbell seemed to be playing so nicely off each other. It appeared to me that Campbell was egging Greene on alot last night and by doing so brought just a little more out of him. This made the music and Greens contribution all the better. I was really impressed with what he brought. Earlier posts from the tour sort of gave me the feeling that he wasn't musically up to the challenge. I would disagree...he brings it, and that version spoke that to me in volumes. I would be interesting to see how he evolves with his own music following this experience. The I'm so Gone was really great, although it was hard hearing Molitz's keys for so much of the show that I often forgot he was there, but when you heard him, his impact was quite noticeable. He also added vocals. The jam which teased us from Low spark and sequed eventually into The Wheel was very tastey and the Scarlet Fire was exactly what I could have wished for musically, but would have preferred, Greene to sing at least one of the two instead of Phil. Having said that Phil's vocals were pretty good...for Phil. Just ate up that first set and called the big river so I felt like a team player!
2nd set, was also pretty tastey, with a straight forward reading of Cosmic followed by one of Greene songs which was pretty good, but i didn't know the tune. Having seen Althea in Buffalo 2 years ago and claiming that Scofields solo might have been the best live guitar solo ive ever witnessed, made me shiver at the opening notes of the tune, but I loved this revised version which came accross like swampy funk. The Jam which followed lead us ultimately to Cryptical>Other One which were fantastic, but I have to say , I loved the Caution. Help>Slip>Franklin was also great, but again would have loved Greene to handle the vocals. Sugar Mag's was fun and Lovelight was really well done.
No complaints and for those of you confused about how this band would work, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised, although there's very little emotive energy optically from Campbell...he just hits those notes in every way with a smaile on his face. No comments on Molo, cause I just love the way he drums.
To the zoners from the Anchor bar, thanks for hookin gup with us...see ya on the road sometime!
Heck, the way they did "A Hard rain's A-Gonna Fall" I'd be psyched to hear them do "Mary Had a Little Lamb" night after night! These guys rock -- I've seen various incarnations of P&F's about 25 times since 2000 and IMHO, this is the best incarnation yet, including the fabled Q
wOoooHooOooo!
Stay home - don't go to these shows... nope no fun at all, just the same ol' same ol' - you dont want to be there. nope. the tv awaits your judgement - Am. Idol never repeats tunes...
Home is where the heart is, safe and secure...
Yaooozzza!!
Lets all face it. We love phil but the band has seriously went downhill. All the song repeats, very little jams and oh well Jackie Green. I wont go see phil and friends again until jackie is long gone. Thats right "Im so gone". We can only hope so!
Shame for you rat monkey! Go and appreciate the good stuff this lineup is doing!
great! more tix for those who get what a special treat this is...
Surprised to hear Ratmonkey's comment. This was not a downhill adventure and I have scene many an incarnation since 2000. My compalint with the Q was too much jamming at times.
Having said this, I thought there were alot of jams and improvisation between songs and especially liked the teases and the slipnot. I was expecting some jamming, but not as much as we got. Greene added alot to the jams IMHO and what he added was great. Surprised that you would feel otherwise.
I should put empahsis on the sound though. If anyone related from the tour is reading, they must turn up the key's. We could hear the Piano, but any other treatments were difficult to hear. I heard these comments from other reviewers during the tour and could not agree more. At times I forgot there was a keyboard player....and he's pretty fuckin good...when I heard him playing piano.
Its all good!
I have enjoyed all of the incarnations of the Phil and Friends/The Q. Each had things to enjoy and things that could be improved upon.
As for The Q, I thought there was a lot of jamming which was going nowhere. yeah, those guys had some great 'chops', but compare to, say some real good improvisation...
For example, listen to a few different live versions of 'Machine Gun' by Jimi Hendrix or some Sun Ra Arkestra or Art Ensemble of Chicago, etc., etc. You will hear some truly creative and divine inspired improvisation. I just found most of the Q's jamming to be formulaic. Still I loved that band, it's just not as perfect as so many make it out to have been, imho.
Give Jackie a chance. I think he is making quick progress. I do think he should try to do some more adventurous rhythm guitar as he is also a keys and drums guy. Weir played some very tasty rhythm guitar way back in the day.
Just stirring the pot, lol. To each his own....
I forgot to mention that security was as chill as any show I've ever been to, inside and outside of the theater. It was a balmy night in Buffalo. 75 degrees at 6 pm in mid October We sat in our car windows open and burned a big fatty down. Then we walked thru the doors water bottle in hand with no pat down or anyone checking her purse. I can't remember a show with so casual a security presence. Hell it almost felt like Amsterdam. Inside the show people were smoking all around and no one was getting hassled. Not that I witnessed anyway. During the break and after the show, the balloons were everywhere and so were the smokers. Security, non existent, Buffalo PD invisible.
My hat is off to the Phil & Friends management team, Shea's, and the police for letting us party and have fun with NO hassles. Thanks. That's the way it SHOULD be done.
good to hear Paul, Buffalo has always been one of my favorite places to go for shows and such, always treated with kindness and respect from the locals there.
i thought the show last night was great. i will not talk anymore crap about larry cambell, he's not the greatest but he can take the lead no problem. i really liked the big river as well as when he tore up althea. the schoolgirl was strong and jackie is pretty good, but i thought when he left the stage they sounded pretty good without him. the leopard skin pill box hat was a treat as well, he does remind me of a young dylan maybe. i've had a hard time getting into the wheel over the years, without jerry on the lead. last night was one of the most beautiful wheel's that i've seen since 93'. i'm so gone was just o.k. it was weird seeing phil sing the lyrics though. the low spark tease was cool, but short (there was no heartbreaker that i heard). scarlet and fire is always a treat. the cosmic charlie was a great 2nd set opener. the jackie tune to follow was again, not bad, kind of poppy. larry tore up the althea, cryptical>other one is always good with phil dropping bombs, then a dazed and confused tease was cool. i liked the feedback that phil was playing and noticed a few people leaving during it. i was digging it. as for the caution (do not stop on the tracks), that's something i wouldn't listen to very often. it kind of rambles and brought the show down. help>slip>franklin's was sweet and so was the sugar mag's. the lovelight was not the best i've heard, but solid and fun. as for the entire show, i would give it 3 out of 5. at the same time i am so greatful for all the great shows that phil has provided for us all and it's never the same. even when the shows aren't mind blowers, they are always fun, friendly, with many stranger stopping strangers. God bless Phil and all of his friends throughout the years. we have to be Grateful that phil seems healthy as ever and is still dropping bombs!!
thank you Phil for the real good time. i'll come back every time.
I'm wondering if people who went to this show and the one with Sco a few years back have any thoughts/comparisons?
So now Gypsy Woman = Caution?
Just like Ramble on Rose is now Gone Wanderin'? ;)
i do agree that some of these kids need to learn the names of the songs, before they star posting. there isn't a jackie greene song that could even come close to a "ramble on rose" or a zeppelin, "ramble on". yes, it was a full feedback > caution. i thought it kind of rambled the first time, never really cared for it. they were most likely doing a lot of acid when they made that album, what was it like 67'. it was rare though, but i didn't feel the energy that some of these kids did. maybe because i wasn't dosin' i did kind of respect repeats, being that jackie isn't that familiar with a lot of these tunes. i even heard cambell fumble for a minute during the other one, but he did manage to pull himself out of it. Phil even said in a recent interview that he want to play with people that are not that familiar with the grateful dead catalog. the jerry garcia band was very repetetive throughout the years, as well as the dead in certain eras.
anyway, thank you phil for not forgeting about western new york, there are many grateful folks who love you here. phil is kind of like what forst gump said about a box of chocolates, "you never know what you're going to get".
comparing any of phil's bands together is tough, because it's all different. i thought scofield did great last year, especially on such a short notice and not knowing the songs that well. he's a great player though, so he picked up quickly. i think scofield is a better guitar player overall then cambell, but he's also worldwide with many solo instrumental funk albums. they are totally different. i thought the vocals were a lot stronger with chris robinson, i liked him better then joan. joan didn't really do it for me. i've seen many icarnations of pl&f. the 1st Q sounded a lot like the GD, in between the lyrics and everything since as been much different. phil has had a lot of friends over the years, while some shine brighter then others and everyone has their own opinions. i have fun everytime, because it's all about these great songs that they are playing and this collective mind musical experience we all go on whenever phil and his frinds take the stage. thanks again phil.
larry looks like he runs out of shat to play and just reverts back to the main chord progression of the song and kills jams
better than the Q please
herring and haynes how quickly some of u forget the magic
and the scene was way better
i really cant believe all the shit talking about the Q goin on lately. Too much jamming???? Come on, those guys were capable of anything. Scene was so much chiller.
Thanks for your thoughts Clifton
A quick comment on this versus the last Buffalo show in December of 05. As much as I loved them both, I would give the nod to 2 years ago, because Chris Robinson provided excellent vocals to most of the tunes while this year Phil sang too much IMO. Also, Scofield added alot of energy both in presence and his emotional playing. Lastly, the Althea, while I enjoyed it alot, had to be compared to one of the greatest live renditions Ive ever heard two years ago of that tune, with Scofield laying down what was perhaps the greatest live guitar solo ive ever heard.
This years show was solid and I believe there are alot similarities in the setlist from 2005, which in a way is slightly disappointing.
For those nay-sayers out there, don't show up, more tickets for us. The Buffalo show was full of energy and the band and the fans had a hoot! Looking forward to another show with this band they were great. Sure beats Day Job every 3rd night!
i know i have only been on the bus since 1993, when i was 17 years old. (can't control my age), but i would have to say that the grateful dead at buckeye lake, in hebron, ohio, was the best althea i have ever seen and i've seen a handful. jerry kicked it down last night. scofield was just learning it in 2005, even though he can play almsot anything, and cambell, i think someone else said it, runs out of things to play and goes back to the chorus. he did do a good job this year, but it wasn't jerry. i do think only warren can come in 2nd to jerry's version.
Clifton, age has nothing to do with it.
I'm 23 and never saw Jerry... ;)
That Buffalo 05 Althea is the HEAT. wowza, Scofield's solo is outlandish.
I think i remember seeing the Grateful Dead a number of times "jamming". How soon we forget?
This Buffalo show is smoking hot!!!!
