I think the Dead did three stands at Glens Falls Civic Center... All early 80s shows in '80, '81 and '82...

The venue is an old hickey rink that has recently been refurbished... Some people might know the place from the semi-famed Phish "White Album" Halloween show back in the day...

Lots of rumors seem to abound around the Albany area of some special guests at Glens Falls... Vermont is right next door to Glens Falls, so who knows...

I, for one, am already fired up to see Phil... Haven't checked him out since Hunter Mtn, and he was in fine form... The local PBS station was showing "Dead Ahead" from Radio City Music Hall last night on a fund drive... For $120 donation I got two tix to Phil... Tix were almost going to cost that much anyways- and better to have the money go to a channel playing the Dead than have it wind up in TicketBastards hands!

i have already heard a firm confirmation that Trey will be there .. He had to get permission from the parole board and every thing....

4 GD shows at the Glens Falls Civic Ctr.
1979
1980
1981
1982

After that 82 show, the Capitol District shows were moved up to SPAC and then the Knickerbocker Arena.

Is there a lot to hang out in or is there a bar scene? If no lot, what is the bar of choice? Also, does any one know if they sell beer in this place? I am psyched knowing all of the Dead history in this place.

I saw the 1982 show and it had a really great PITB... for historical purposes..

the dead loved upstate ny; they always played exceptionally well here. i dont know why, but im really not that excited to hear about the trey rumor...anyone else?

i'm sooo excited for this i bought my tix the day the went on sale, and as for the trey rumor, i am just as excited. i've seen phil, the dead, phish, and trey all multiple times, and i can only see him sitting in for a few or many as just an added bonus, i play myself and admire his talent immensely

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Robin Dwyer (Puckrgf) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 10:48 pm: Edit Post

i'm thinking of throwing a lil pre/post-phil party at a bar in which the owner i know well, on south street just a couple of blocks from the civic center after the show, just throwing it out there to see how much intrest people would have in doing that after and what would be some good idea's

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Vee (Meltingopen) on Thursday, October 18, 2007 - 07:08 am: Edit Post

Looking forward to the show - haven't seen Phil since a year or 2 back when he played at the Albany Armory, and that was a good show...Hey Row Jimmy - sounds like a win-win with the PBS tix :-)

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Row Jimmy on Thursday, October 18, 2007 - 11:38 am: Edit Post

PBS rules in the Albany area... Anyone playing "Dead Ahead" as a fund drive promotion is fine by me...

As for rumored Trey appearances in G-Falls, I surely have nothing negative to say about it... I'm just happy to be going... Could be an epic show...

Third topic- pregame party... I like that idea too... I assume the GFCC lot will be hopping, they are usually pretty laid back up here... But if anyone wants to recommend a bar to "takeover" before the show- I'd be there!

Just a few days away... The weekend is almost here... Serenity now... Serenity now...

In the old days when the dead played there I heard from reliable sources that they served draft molsons, yes on tap and where the concession stand was you could see down into the arena where the band was. People used to say that Glenns Falls was one of the coolest little places to see the boys back in the day. I am from binghamton and I will be there to check out the falls.

Yeah- Glens Falls Civic Center always had that "old shed" feel to it before the renovation. I think the recent remodeling was just completed a few weeks/months back- and this is one of the first shows since it has been redone...

Not sure what to expect- but I hope it is as laidback and fun as it used to be... The lot should be pretty relaxed, it usually is around the Capital Region and Adirondacks...

I, for one, have already planned a fishing trip on Lake George for the following day... Not much better than Phil Lesh and Landlocked Salmon... All in Autumn in the Northeast...

Loving it...

They do sell beer at the civic center, as far as the scene in the lot, there really isn't much of a lot, parking is somewhat of a pain, but there are several bars within a block or 2, beware of GFPD and open container tickets, they seem more than happy to give them out lately. Check out the area bars and restaurants nearby, there are some pretty cool spots around the civic center. Have fun, see you all there!

Date 4/14/82 - Wednesday
Set One Jack Straw [5:35] ; They Love Each Other [8:24] ; Me And My Uncle [3:04] > Big River [5:25] ; Deep Elem Blues [6:17] > Little Red Rooster [7:57] ; Brown Eyed Women [5:10] ; Lazy Lightnin' [3:34] > Supplication [5:29] > Bertha [7:00]

Encore U.S. Blues [5:02]

This was the last time the GD played GF, the deep elm blues was a real highlight, not done at all back then. Hot 82' spring tour with sick other ones being done. Check out the Roch.NY 4-9-82, the strange clapping during drums and space and the sick Jerry lead sound before the other one.

'82 was my first..what a show...I made the mistake of being a good citizen the day before the show and gave blood...I was low a pint and after having party consumables of all sorts all the long drive down from UVM I was a mess. I saw sound as crystals of various colors that night (they built a crystal structure of cosmic proportion...right through my skull). 6th row center for my first show. In a moment of semi-lucidity I remember seeing a couple little people walk by dressed as elves or something...I recall thinking that that just wasn't fair. I can also remember hanging out outside before the show and someone came up to us telling us the blue acid tabs with the spots were bad..don't take any...having just seen Woodstock movie I was wondering whether I had fallen into some sort of time warp. By the end of the show I was sure I had fallen into some sort of warp and it felt just fine. 25 years. It will be just my luck they play that damn Deep Elem again. Of course its been 25 years and never a Dark Star in all that time..watch them play it tonight instead.

I thought about that Lake Placid show before posting my capitol district statement. Although Lake Placid is up the Northway from Albany, I don't think it's considered part of the Capitol District. It's a good 3+ hours north and actually part of the Adirondacks. It would be like stating Watkins Glen (Leatherstocking district) is part of the Capitol area. No?

"Shine" (Trey) opened the 2d Set. Pedestrian 1st set; apocalyptic 2d. I can't even begin to do it justice. Simply, utterly magnificent. Special. Rarely have I ever seen a more ambitious performance. They really committed themselves to blowing the roof off the place. It was an honor to be there.

agreed - whole heartedly - just got home - this show ranks right up there with any of the great shows of the past.

Trey and Larry were on the same wavelength the entire night - which seemed to be rare last summer - not only did trey step back and play solid rhythm when larry soloed, when they worked together it was overwhelming - they traded licks, they played signature riffs in harmony parts - ala Duane and Dickey style - and during several points in the jams, they found magic together. There was one moment when they each worked their way separately to the same note that steve was holding ringing - and then they both got feedback on it at the same time - it was truly cosmic - they both seemed amazed at what had happened.

"apocalyptic 2d"

man, that says sit all - the energy level just kept rising and rising the entire show - i was even thinking as they went into verse 2 of dark star - how unique would this be! To end a show with dark star

they could have, with complete satisfaction on everyone's part

but when they started help, I think it blew everyone's mind

and the jam on the slipknot part was out of this world

It WAS cosmic.

lastly, on jackie:

he seemed unintimidated - in fact served the music well - he backed out at times, but played a killer harp solo during (?, sorry at the moment I forget where that was - could it really have been cumberland? thinks so)

but even after killer solos on franklin tower by both trey and larry, when it came to time to key in the ending chords, jackie stepped up, played a short but hot solo that climaxed with heavy fanning on a high d chord for four bars - and then the band shifted sharply into the ending coda - it was tight tight tight

on wharf rat, jackie played really solid B3 chords - very remininscent of the skullfuck version - seems clear he listened to that heavily

jackie did fine - my guess is he goes to bed tonight very pleased to have been a part - and to have contributed meaningfully

Pride & Autumn VERY interesting theory you have brought up...VERY!!!!

Little bro, i'm glad you were there to see this!!!

ONE LOVE ALL; PLF

ps: Jackie tunes??? Supercede, Mexican? Cold Black?? jeez louise. I would say him and Trey have slightly ;) slightly different styles. I'm sure Trey was on his game hopefully like the quality at Vegoose... Sounds like the show was focused around Trey. I am just wondering why they didn't attempt any Jackie songs.

you know what would have been cool: "Let it Ride" - Ryan Adams

sounds like this was the best show of the tour, thanks to trey. i hope he's doing well and a friend of phils again in the future. i have still not seemed to see them play together, seen em' on the same tour last year, but trey sat out whole show. sounds like trey brought the heat as usual and stepped this band up a notch. sorry larry fans, but he can't hang with trey.

'Howard's Excellent Glens Falls Adventure '

Great show last night! That second set was one of the best Phil shows that I've ever seen. Larry Campbell owned the first and the song closing lead guitar solos during Unbroken Chain (Trey was the mid-song lead solo). Larry had such a shit eating grin when he finished the first solo and went over to Molo with a beaming glint in his eyes.

The arena hasn't really changed since my first show there nearly 30 years ago on August 31, 1979. I had a great adventure with my car. I was hearing a bearing crunch on one of the pulleys starting Thursday night. This is two days after I had the NYS inspection and asked the dealer to look it over. I was given a clean bill of health. After applying lots of lubricant to the bearing/pulley, I decided to chance it going to Glens Falls in my Saab. It was certainly a better option than having to eat my 2 tickets and miss the show. Well I got to Glens Falls and of course as I parked the car the A/C pulley bearing finally froze and the Serpentine belt shreded. Not a pretty picture, 5pm T-minus three hours and no way to get home. I called AAA, got the car towed to a local Saab dealer 3 miles away, got a ride back into town from the tow truck driver, called around to find out where the nearest car rental was (40 miles away at the Albany Airport), which closed at midnight after the show ended. I went to a local cab company, got a $65 for a ride to the airport and I had my Hertz rental. I got back into Glens Falls and into the arena 5 minutes before the lights went down. On the bright side, I saw a great show and if the car brokedown on Sunday night going home, I would have been 140 miles from my destination. Now all I have to do is figure out how to return the car to Albany and get my car in Glens Falls. This is all strangely reminiscent of the Glens Falls show I saw in 1981 when my 1973 Plymouth Duster dropped it's muffler at the Albany Thruway toll plaza and I had to crawl under the car with some coat hangers to make it to Glens Falls and back home to New Paltz.

Absolutely one of the best two sets of music played in a very long time. There was nothing pedestrian about the first set, the only issue was the volume during alabama through FOTD, but then everything kicked into gear. the deep elem, deal, bird song, bertha was epic with trey just shredding all of it. the second set was pure magic...even the amazing set list does not do the set justice, it was played just so so well. this board is a must. trey just ruled, jackie sat out a good portion of the second set (which I give him credit for), and when he was on stage it was mostly on keys. great venue even though it was about 65% full, basically zero security. check out the very strong phil vocals on the entire dark star, the amazing wharf rat sandwiched in between with trey playing and singing it to perfection and the flawless unbroken chain.

One for the ages....

A solid set list can be ruined by half-ass playing by a Junkie. The only reason Trey was at this show was cause his stupid ass is has to report to Washington county for felony drug court every morning. This was hands down the worst show of the tour I have listen to all of the shows and saw the 2 in Boston. Trey totally overshadowed Jackie, the fact that they played 2 trey songs and no Jackie songs is total BS. Musical the show had Trey's climatic bull shit and just was crap. Listen to the 10/9 Boston show and you will realize how much Glens Falls sucked. This was my home town show and I was completely disappointed.

hey cozmic sig

"1 - it takes 3-5 people to fill JG's shoes"

I was thinking the same thing on the ride home - what I realized last night was that Larry's style and Trey's style are both subsets of Jerry's style.

The "clapton meets country" style of larry, particulary when he fingerpicks, does have a lot in common with stuff Jerry did. Listen to Larry's fingerpicking rolls on Cumberland from this show and you'll see what I mean.

Trey, on the other hand, can really do the soaring leads that peak with a climax, plus he can do the "pure sound" volume swells and pull the entire band down into space and then back up again - this is stuff jerry used to do as well.

Jerry could do both - and more, though.

As an example of how Trey plus Larry still fall short of Jerry's full range, think of the melodic ballad solos - delicate, pretty, slow stuff - like stella blue or visions of johanna - neither one of them (in fact, no one i know) can do that stuff like jerry.

So you put Trey and Larry together and you get a pretty good combination of jerry's style.

It aint Jerry of course, but its pretty damn good!

I agree that Trey took more then he gave. He was totally unaware of the others solos and played over them. His energy was goof for the first set, byt the second set might as well have been a Trey show. Too bad because it could have been an amazing set.

<<<Upstate New York Freak Out!

That is EXACTLY what it was!!!

It was pure psychedelic cosmic MADNESS.

Among the best nights of GD related music post Jerry that I can recall. It ranks w/the best of them. & I didn't think I'd be saying that so soon after Mt Jam.

Not gonna lie, I was not *overjoyed* when I heard Trey was more than a rumor.

Collectively, they could not have executed any more brilliantly had they tried. Mind-bending magicians.

And the level of fun was off the charts. It should be illegal.

This was an all-time classic that will be listened to by fans for the next 300 years. Trey did totally overshadow Jackie, but so what, we loved it. And that is not saying anything bad about Jackie it was just the way things went. Jackie did nothing wrong. It was just Treys party and party he did. Larry and him seemed to be really listening and propelling each other. PHil , Molo, Molitz were so solid, damn what a show. I was off to the side of the stage and I caught Phil grinning more than a few times.

Great first set, and the second set was 2 hours of shear energy, the kind you just get to see only a few times in a lifetime.

"He was totally unaware of the others solos and played over them."

I didn't see that kind of inward-selfish last night - I've definitely seen it in Trey before in the phil shows last summer - Trey acted like Larry wasnt even there at times last summer.

But last night was completely different - Trey stepped back and let everyone have space - I thought it was considerate as hell.

For example, Trey and Larry started trading licks at one point in the traditional old blues fashion - one person calls, the other responds - after this goes on for awhile, both start noodling around the same inner core and weave a complex tapestry - this is an old blues thing. I saw a film where Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton do it from 1967 - what I saw last night could stand up to the guy/clapton thing - truly.

The old Trey would never have done that, but my guess is that Larry is done it before

I went into this show without a lot of hope... I'd heard a lot of awful recordings out of Summer 06 with Trey... when I heard the crowd cheer and saw his redheaded mug out on stage I got pretty damn depressed... but hey, it's Phil, might as well enjoy the ride...

Alabama Getaway opener... meh. Sound was poor, at least from where I was (Section A, up on the bleachers right of the stage, stage left)... almost no Phil, barely any Larry, hints of Molitz, Jackie wasn't really in the mix... but TREY was WAY up there... he played a few nice licks if I remember correctly, but the tune was weak really... Phil shouldn't sing this. Period. He did, however, give a really sweet kick-cue to end it.

Pride was perfunctory. Larry kills it on the pedal steel, which they cranked the volume on after the first 2 seconds or so when it was inaudible... Phil sang very well... blues jam in the middle was short and a little lacking, but it seems like Trey was still feeling things out... I feel like Jackie must've been doing something but I don't remember hearing him much... still was the Trey experience. Not enough Phil.

FOTD was... you know, sorta basic. I love Jackie's voice, so that was good to see... Trey seemed to be getting into the groove, Larry was doing some nice stuff on the Fiddle... after Phil sang the last verse (and where the hell did he pull that out of for this tour?), they kept on playing, and I was really pleased to see that... Trey really started picking it up in this jam, really some quality guitar work, some of the best quieter stuff I've heard out of him in a while...

Deep Elem busts in... good stuff. Suddenly I can actually hear Larry's guitar. Trey is still a bit overpowering but suddenly there's some interplay... and I can hear Phil! Almost at least... it would take until late in the second set for him to really turn it up... Larry does this song well.

I'm pretty sure they continued right into Deal but I could be wrong... Jackie does that song very well also... Larry did some really nice guitar work over the complex progression, and I could finally hear him... Trey got going and did some simpler stuff theory-wise but the energy was all there... he ripped it up in the "Don't you let that," repeated section, Larry got going too... awesome moment...

The Bird Song I honestly don't remember that much about... I know Phil sang "within her" and then "within him" like he has for several years now... I remember the between-verses jam had some good moments between Trey and Larry... I think Jackie was playing some keys, but I really couldn't hear much of it... definitely one of the best songs of the set though...

Bertha! Trey was reading every line off the prompter but that's okay, he performed brilliantly... awesome guitar, great interplay with Larry, I think even Jackie threw some solos in here... Phil looked pleased... they didn't quite agree on how to end the song it seemed like, so some of the energy faded as each bandmember kinda closed it out on his own, but that's okay, the crowd was hopped up enough as it
was... they turned on all the lights in the place at the same time and everyone was like WHOA...

After a LONG setbreak, they finally reemerged... and wait, there's a lady on the stage... it's one of Trey's girls. Nice. I believe it was Christina Durfee, who has sang with Phil before, both with Trey and without (SOB's in April, for example). Anyway, out bursts Trey's radio hit Shine, which Trey seemed (accordingly) very at home on... the rest of the band was solid as well. Quality tune, great to see live.

Shine fades out (Christina leaves), and the whole place is anticipating what's to come. Phil counts off.... 1, 2, 3, 4, CRASH: the wonderful dissonance that opens up none other than VIOLA. Trey loves this song, and carefully deferring to Phil on when to play and when not to, he ripped it up. It's tough to remember exactly what happened when, since they were in and out three times, but I remember solid vocals, awesome guitar, and just sick energy... it slowly mellowed a bit I think, and then came Cumberland! Larry kills it on these bluegrass-flavored tunes, and Trey was right up there... at this point it slowly becomes a blur, but I remember thinking as they faded out of Cumberland before the last two vocal sections that it's a shame they didn't finish the song... but of course Phil wouldn't let us down, and we were treated to a sick Viola Cumberland sandwich... seamless transitions too... finally rolls out of Viola... into... what is this? Apparently it was Plasma, I'm not terribly familiar with the deeper Phish cuts... Christina came back out... quick little thing, cool vocal work, very Phishy...

I couldn't believe the next notes that came out. I was so awestruck that it took me a minute to even figure out what I was listening to... Unbroken! No way! But can they pull it off?? Apparently so. I can't think Trey was following all the chords, but he knew exactly when to lay out and let Larry and Phil drive the bus... Jackie must've been going here too, but it was hard to discern which guitar was his... I know the sound was never empty though, so it he must've been there... Phil dropped the three huge bombs to start off the vocals, and then nailed them... phenomenal, top of his game... and then they entered the jam. I really wasn't sure if Trey could keep up... but he did. Nailed the main riff of the first section, kept it slamming on while Larry killed it up above... and then the other section... I remember a few hints of confusion but Trey really kicked it into high gear here, really really quality... perfect transitions back to the verse, Larry hit all the right notes that our discerning ears need to hear... more excellent Phil vocals, and then the jam out... not quite Warren level, but still very strong... solid solid solid.

So what could be next after that monster? Phil didn't give us much time to guess, dropping the bombs to open DARK STAR... no way. Interesting opening, lot of energy, mellows, then comes back BIG... Phil was pushing Trey to sing it himself, but Trey looked unsure... they shared a little visual communication before Phil agreed to sing lead... Trey then joined him, so it worked really nicely... very solid Dark Star, hard to remember the long jam... they definitely hit a few different keys, because Wharf Rat sounded new and fresh... Trey did some sweet vocals here, right on cue (except maybe he came in a bit early on the first line), but generally really picking up Phil's directions... so nice to see him cleaned up a little bit... solid solid solid once again. Rolls back into Dark Star... Phil quickly puts away the second verse, then jam jam jam... and then...

HELP! HELP! HELP! Except for Larry (I think, maybe Trey) throwing the main riff (the Slipknot starter) after the first F minor hit, this just took off... vocals really solid, though it looked like Jackie was supposed to sing the "Poised for flight" sections, which Trey kinda stepped on and stole, but it's okay, since Jackie will get to do it next time, and hopefully many more times... I remember the solos during the song being a hint underwhelming, but that's cool, the energy was all there... Slipknot was excellent... Larry has those riffs PERFECT (though Molo seemed a little tired in his little drum solo sections)... Trey carried the energy right through the jam, Phil pounding along beneath... they rode back and up and over the riffing rollercoaster and Phil had his little mini-conference with Molo as they popped into Franklin's... which to be honest was one of the weaker points of the set. Phil had Molo accelerating, pushing pushing pushing, handed Trey the lead baton and... he faltered a bit. Larry was kinda hanging back and Trey really just couldn't bring it up to the level we were feeling. It was a bit disappointing, especially after "Listen to the music play..." but what are you going to do... it rambles rambles rambles... but then wait... what's this... I hear a Jackie. Building, building, building... finally, here he comes, busting it out! We can feel the end of the song coming, and here comes Jackie, flying up the neck, absolutely killing it! The Greene Lantern saves the day, singlehandedly rescuing what looked to be developing into a less than steller closer. Damn did that kid pull through. And then BOOM, Phil drops the closing bombs. Man what a set. I really need to hear it again.

Phil seemed truly impressed with the crowd when he came out for the Donor Rap. I didn't think it was so much louder than usual, but he was "thrilled to see such a huge response." Good stuff.

The Box of Rain encore was predictable. Very nice, Jackie on acoustic, excellent Phil vocals, nothing terribly special but a nice mellow cap on the whole deal. I would've dug a Golden Road, but of course you can't send everyone out of the place all crazy fired up.

So, great great night. Pics to follow (if I can figure out how to post them).

"pure psychedelic cosmic madness" -- a PERFECT description of what we saw and heard last night. One thing that the tapes can't capture -- the primal, orgasmic ROAR of the crowd when they completed the 2d set's journey with a perfectly executed landing at the end of Franklin's. God, how I miss that sound -- nothing like it....the kind of crowd response that you only get at a special, memorable show. In the future, those who meet and discover that they were there will hug.

I was at the 10/9 Boston show (my hometown) and all I can say is that you and I must live in different worlds. Last night had everything I look for in a show - tight execution, dynamics, improvised magic - I'm usually happy if I get 20 minutes of what I look for - the entire second set (after shine) gave me everything I look for for 2 hours.

Don't tell me this town aint got no heart - you just gotta poke around.

This was my hometown show and it was EPIC. It was a dance party for sure, and the energy was amazing.
The party right accross the street after the show was amazing to.
I think Phil had a lot of fun and will wanna come back to glens falls.

This show was definitely lackluster. While I'm not able to go into as much depth as Strat13, I felt that it was the "Trey Anastacio and Friends" show and not the "Phil Lesh and Friends" show. I bought my ticket to hear Phils masterly guitar jam out. I bought my ticket for Jackie's superbly dynamic piano playing. After Trey stole the second set of the Phil show last year, I've respected him a little less. I've listened to every show this tour and felt a deeper connection to the music of lets say the Boston shows than to this one. Trey made many of the songs about him. Jackie may have been sick as Philleshhead suggested but there were certain points last night when I heard him playing amazingly and intricately... and Trey's wailing managed to overshadow it and made Jackie's playing just background. If Trey had come out and played one or two songs it would have been a more solid show than the one we received. Think Peter Wolf on the 9th, he came out for Pack Fair and Square and that was it. And it was an amazing surprise and made the show that much better. It just wasn't a smooth show last night and it was definitely not improved by Trey.

Hi there......

I must say this show really unexpectedly knocked my socks off!!!!! It was the best post-GD show I have ever experienced!!!!!

It was the only show that my husband and I could catch on the entire tour soooo we were very psyched!!!!

We are not much of Trey fans and have never been, but I must admit that he really heated up the show a few notches....AMAZING!!!!! I feel he "hogged" the show for most of it, which I was abit disappointed about because I really love Larry and always have, and I wanted to hear a bit more of the "new" kid....

Larry did shine on a few tunes especially with the pedal steel, a sweet guitar solo, and as usual his violin was incredible!!!!

I could see how Jackie is great and look forward to catching him in the future possibly this summer, although last night we did not get the full Jackie "experience" with Trey's deafening riffs!!!!

The set lists were awesome....especially the Viola Lee Blues constant segways in and out of Cumberland.........The first set's Bertha really blew my dancing shoes off too!!!! Pride of Cucamonga and Unbroken Chain left me speechless and awestruck as well!!!!

Overall, we had a magical, and beautiful mind-blowing experience, as usual here in upstate NY on a crisp, clear, fall night with a meteor showered night complemented with the everlasting greatness of a room full of talented and wonderful musicians keeping the spirit and magic totally alive!!!!!

Thank you Phil and your Phriends for a "REAL GOOD TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Love ya Phil....hope to catch ya this summer....

Karen:-):-):-):-):-):-)

I've seen some real duds and I've seem some great shows but last night was EPIC! . You never can please everyone. I thought Trey did a great job of sharing. Larry had about equal amount of solos. Trey hadn't played out in a long time. Give the guy a break. I'm sure he had a lot of pepped up guitar wailing testosterone. If you don't like Trey, I'm sure last night could have been a bummer. I, for one, have been a fan for a while and Trey's sobriety really showed in his playing. For a unrehearsed guitar laden Jam Fest, it was about as tight as tight can be. Everyone on stage (and off) were noticeably having a GREAT time. Last night was one of the reasons why I still come back even after a bad show. Truly magical !! BTW, that keyboardist (not Jack) was amazing as well and doesn't seem to have gotten his dues on this discussion.

I really don't think this show can be compared to any others on the tour. It was most certainly a Trey and Friends show, which is disappointing for those coming to see the Jackie/Larry band that has done very well already, but exciting for many of us as well. Trey was overpowering, unsure, and at times just plain weak, but the overall effect was awesome nonetheless. It probably won't be a show we listen to over and over again, but being there was an unforgettable experience.

Thank god for the rest of us that Sam does "live in a different world" as Grubby said. This show was the tits and will easily be the highlight of the tour and just about any other tour that's ever gonna happen.

The roof was blown off of the civic center last night and i feel priveledged to have been there.

I have seen a great many phil and friends shows. I flew to see his 60th birthday show in 2000 at the Kaiser in Oakland, and I was lucky enough to be able to walk to the Glens Falls show from my house.

When I heard that Trey was likely to play, I was not overjoyed. I love Phish, and Trey for that matter. But summer 2006 at SPAC soured me on Trey playing with Larry, or more to the point over Larry.

When he stepped on the stage I decided to do my best to keep an open mind. Not surprisingly Trey was a little agressive, but he wasn't as bad as I had expected. He and Larry played off each other brilliantly.

As for Jackie, I heard from one of the civic center staff that they had to find a doctor to make a house call for Jackie, who has the flu. He still played brilliantly, in my opinion, but he did duck out a little bit and leave Trey the spotlight. But why not? Yes, Trey was a bad boy, and is paying for it. But he is still a guitar addict, and we used to love him for it. People, step out of your glass houses. Trey just had his first fix of his first love in a number of months, cut him some slack.

The show was incredible. Was it the Trey show? yeah, somewhat, and I feel bad for those with a distatste for that. For me, the set list alone made it incredible.

The band playing at the after party across the street was Sky Pocket, with a little help from Shu saxophonist Matt Carl, at least until I left.

J

Damn, I sure hope Jackie hasn't caught that same bug that hit Ryan Adams when he was touring with Phil. I jest, Get well soon Jackie!

thanks all for sharing your thoughts on the show. glad to hear there was some shredding going on and most of you folks enjoyed the show and the addition of the sober redhead.

How can you go wrong with that? Not to mention the Viola Cumberland and then Dark Star Wharf Rat sandwiches...Plus you got to hear Phil's most beloved songs with Trey as an added bonus. That's what I call EPIC. I can't wait to hear the disks....

OMFG!!!
Glens Falls was one of the best shows I have been to... EVER!
I am so HAPPY that Trey came out for this show. Not only did Trey come out, but he PLAYED THE WHOLE SHOW!!!!!
Absolutely phenomenal! I had a smile on my face the whole show, and I'm pretty sure Phil and Trey did also. I guess Jackie wasn't prime this night (Flu? Drugs?) but Trey definitely covered for him. The rest of the band also looked like they were having a blast as well!
I am so glad I went to this show. You ROCK , TREY!!!

Just a couple observations I'd like to make. It seems as though most of the negative reviews are coming from folks who have preconceptions or expectations that colored their experience. As much as it's fun to judge a show on how good a tape listen it's going to be, how it fits into context of tour/career/historical presence or how you wanted this or expected that, when it comes right down to it the best concert is about the realtime energy feedback loop between performer and audience and from (almost)front row center this show had it in spades. The crowd was in ggod voice last night and Phil clearly got off on it. It was interesting to note from the ground zero perspective some of the things that go on on stage that are not always apparent from further back:

Jackie did not look well..although he rose to the occasion a bunch of times previously noted and was received with great appreciation by the middle of the second set he was looking really green (sorry, no pun intended) around the gills. The boy was not having fun.

Trey didn't steal the spotlight, he was given it by Phil. Phil was definitely orchestrating the whole thing over the monitors and we saw him repeatedly tell Trey to "go for it" after which Trey would do as he was told with abandon.

Trey was loud, but no louder than Larry from where we were, and there were plenty of times where they would complete each others leads or have really smooth hand off that were almost transparent if you weren't watching closely.

In the end I have to say it was one of the most enjoyable and energetic shows I've seen, and I finally got the Dark Star I've been missing all these years.

awesome!!! wasn't that close up, we were in front of the soundboards but the energy level in that place was OFF THE HOOK!!!!! That place just ROCKED. It was clear that Phil was having a blast & it was Phil who was still steering the ship no doubt.

Few notes:
Christina was also on vocals on Plasma

Jackie did look quite under the weather - people sitting in front of me said they saw him throw up behind his amp in the middle of the 2nd set

I was up in section A (bleachers above stage left) and Trey was about 50% louder than everyone else for the first set, and maybe 15-20% louder in the second... watching the videos on YouTube however Larry and Trey sound very well-balanced, even early on, so potentially it was the acoustics of the room...

... "or how you wanted this or expected that, when it comes right down to it the best concert is about the realtime energy feedback loop between performer and audience and " ...

YES exactly!!! and because of the energy back and forth, and band interplay among themselves too, (with winner song picks!), we had a GREAT time for the 2nd Boston show 10-10-07!!! I could only hope to hear other songs for variety, and have *almost* as much fun at Glenns Falls... Jackie G put down his guitar more often than expected, and was better on vocals than I expected. Larry did pour it on at times, and traded licks too. I told my friend that part of the reason he had enjoyed his Boston show so much, when he was so wishing Barry S was on this tour (ya know,)- well I said Surpassing Lowered Expectations is a way to some surprise enjoyment and fun!

So I am saying that it was GREAT to see Jackie & Larry with Phil in Boston. Molo was pushing... And the crowd was very much into that show (maybe some shows are not as thrilling???? off nights??). No- this was not how the band played at Glenns Falls. Yes- it was a night with Trey. And so it was different, as was the Albany Armory show with Scofield. Yet I need not mention Trey does not play in the same style as John Sco. So this went another direction.

Alabama with upbeat rockin stuff, opens with high energy and Trey is out front (center) and doing his sound/notes in there while this mix of Friends gets comfortable with him.

For PRIDE, Larry sits on Pedal Steel, and I think Jackie on keys (?I am not certain- but I recall thinking Hey, Trey is the only guitar!?). This starts off with the nice studio-like intro thing (pedal and then verses), but much later it is Trey pouring on the guitar licks of sustain and pushin' it hard. And here is a clue of how our night will be!!! This song is not supposed to rock like that. The sweet tune doesn't usually go to that hard place. It never has before and doubt this could be repeated! unexpected? That is where we went and it was wild and it fit just because it happened like that. Yet that is just a hot hot hot jam and the song is not over. When we got fired up there and peaked, well just now is a great time to switch pace and go back to Larry for the tune's pedal steel part and a grand closing. Hey, Trey took it and then it was passed back, with guidance all along from Phil bass notes and vibes. An unexpected turn for that song, and then the rest of the night, esp set2.

Larry switched to fiddle for FOTD (again maybe only Trey on guitar?) but I think Trey did a step back, ah make that two steps back to let the Friends make some music with him mostly background?

the guy in front of me (GA floor! thanx GDTS too!) saw the 2 prior shows and mentioned Jackie had the Flu... still the show must go on= Deep Elem was the set1 Jackie highlight, and fun, not showing any weakness.

Deal (like FOTD) was played in Boston and (both songs) appear to be almost every other show this tour?? I really liked the Boston version, not sure if it is fair to compare? ah gee that's all we do anyway, compare and all. I was more into it for Boston. If you don't remember Bird Song it may be that it took ya so far out there in the spacy parts? Well Bertha brought us back with our feets a-movin again.

For both Viola Lee and Dark Star we were not about to let things rush on- both had SLOW starts, yet as the songs differ, the starts varied. Viola- can ya hold that note for 4 bars Trey? how about 8 bars (hey people I'm approx or figuratively perhaps)??? Wait, take your time, the beat will come into focus and come back around soon enough. Take it easy and then take it onward...

For Dark Star it started with bass setting the mood, and again, take it slow people- what's the rush, as it was not until "later", after the grove was set and entered, that the guitar noodles appeared at a quicker pace. Nice and glad to have that! Even more glad to get a return to Dark Star after Wharf Rat (reminds me Wharf Rat table was in the lobby, good to have some of these old traditions continue for young folk).

The people around me were dancin' like happy crazies in set2. Once, a guy & girl were reaching up and hoping Trey would go just a bit higher to find that note above the high one he already had. Ok hit it once or twice, why not! Yeah!

so it went....

Beautiful leave colors for the drive there helped set the mood?!

This was a BIG show with a great big sound and the big upstate NY vibe. The second set was extreme, and the setlist about as good as it can get.

Phil was fabulous and Larry sounded really good, but this was a major Trey show; Trey was front and center like the boy who finally got let out of the house for the first time in a long time after getting in trouble. I've never been a big Phish or Trey fan, and I did sometimes wish he would STFU -- but he knows the material and rocked and really brought it. Even Trey bashers were liking him last night.

Oh, and poor poor Jackie Green was completely and utterly upstaged by Trey. Jackie wasn't feeling well, he was blowing his nose and going offstage -- but we had great seats close to the stage and Jackie honestly looked agog and out of his league. Some of us felt bad for him. I hope the boy recoups tonight.

Phil seemed to be having a GREAT time, completely animated -- and loving that Trey was there.

i am only reading about one bad review and the rest are all killer. i know there are some kids that are trey haters, i've experienced them a few times and don't understand. out of all the grateful dead shows and GD family shows, no one has totally filled that void except for Phish, in my life. after seeing phish 33 times and trey solo 4, he is the best guitar player in the business today. larry cambell is a good guitar player, but trey anastasio is a phenominal guitar wizard and that is why trey invited him last night. i bet those that didn't like last night, were the ones saying these were the best shows ever earlier in the tour. Buffalo, again was about 3 out of 5 stars for me. it was o.k., it had it's moments, but wasn't all that. trey would have had me on my feet all night spinning. I hope Phil and Trey do a full tour as soon as Trey is able, that way we can keep out all these haters, who think larry cambell is the best they ever heard.

Epic show. Felt like I had the fortune to hit a Fan Show ... songs mostly too deep for the newbies, butmaybe it will inspire them. The show gave me the feel of a Class Album show: all energy.

If you went with expectations, you may have been disappointed with the set-list, or the Trey-Show factor, because this was definitely a Fans show, rewarding the fans with deep tracks from the Dead from long ago that still have punch. But Trey did add a great deal, and when he stayed focussed he was on and tight.

A top-ten list Live show for my money.

P.S. Yes,trey got a little Center Stage at moments, but he did step back when the othef guitarist nudged him to say,"Back to Phil .. it's time" Funny little scene.

Can't wait for tapes.

DL

i hate treys playing, he's good, but his vocals are weak and he sounds like a little wimp when he sings. Larry and Jackie are so much cleaner and tastful, Jackie just belts that shit, of course he's young and low mileage. Trey is still up to the same tricks, noodle and bed. Check out Larry's solo in HELP...its super tastful and spot on, thats how you play. Listening now and it sounds great...UNBELIEVABLE UNBROKEN....MAYBE THE BEST I HAVE EVER HEAR BESIDES THE ONES WITH SCOFIELD. The Wharf Rat is pretty choice too, but i hate Treys little screams...Molitz is incredible....molo is amazing, LC is the bomb and JG has incredible talent too. Nokia is going to be big grand stand for many a musicians, lets hope Trey gets about 1 night. Sorry, but I like the sounds of the band with out the TA factor.

What a night!!!

__________________________________________________ __________
Lesh takes crowd on a musical journey

By DREW KERR, dkerr@poststar.com
Sunday, October 21, 2007 1:59 PM EDT

GLENS FALLS – The ticket stubs, the pre-concert advertisements and the marquee flashing outside the Glens Falls Civic Center all agreed: Saturday night’s concert belonged to Phil Lesh.

But as much credit as the former Grateful Dead bassist deserves for the evening’s success, this show was all about Trey Anastasio.

Anastasio, who fronted for Phish until the jam band’s 2004 breakup, was pronounced as a “special guest” early Saturday morning. But the moniker quickly showed it’s irrelevancy as the red-bearded guitarist settled into his position at stage front – noticeably centered with his microphone a few paces ahead of all else.
His presence never dissipated through over three hours of improvisational harmony and his guitar solos were the cornerstones of many an off-the-cuff ballad.
It can’t be said that Anastasio’s appearance was a complete surprise.

The 42-year-old has been something of an enigmatic character locally since a tumble with Whitehall Police in December 2006. Known as Ernest J. Anasatasio in the Washington County court system, the former frontman was ordered to attend drug court after admitting he had a trove of prescription painkillers when pulled over.

As part of the drug court program, he was required to live in the area for at least three months.

Consider this his coming out party.

And what a party it was.

The Vermont native acted as if he’d had nothing to do but practice since settling across the border in the Empire State.

He hit all the right notes and then added a few more during a nearly one-hour first set that featured Dead classics, “Friend of the Devil,” “Deep Elem Blues” and a raucous version of “Bertha.”

In the latter song there was, for Anastasio, a certain emphasis on the line “Test me, test me, why don’t you arrest me?”

The quip was not lost on the crowd – a motley amalgam of dreadlocks, loose ankle-length skirts and more than a few tie-dyed shirts that sufficiently distracted the arena’s security guards from the on-stage antics.

After a perhaps-too-long 40 minute interim, the five members of Phil Lesh and Friends – yes they were there too – returned for two more hours of seamless jams.
And though it may have been Trey’s night the material was not.

“The Cumberland Blues,” “Wharf Rat,” and a nearly 15-minute version of “Help on the Way” were clear reminders that this performance was still very much indebted to the Dead.

The inimitable set provided a chance for Lesh’s friends – as in “Phil Lesh & Friends” – who are accompanying him on his latest 30-date tour to showcase their merits.
Jackie Greene, a 26-year-old California who hooked up with Lesh on a relative lark, appeared sick – grabbing tissues constantly and disappearing at inopportune moments. But he still managed to display the promise Lesh, 40 years his senior, saw in him.
Larry Campbell, best known for his recent work with Bob Dylan, also proved his resume is robust for a reason, offering healthy doses of vocals, violin accompaniment and guitar. I left wondering why he’s not more of a household name.

Meanwhile, drummer John Molo did enough to maintain his seat at the table and Steve Molitz provided an intriguing bit of synthesized sound from behind the keyboards, giving the classics a uniquely modern appeal.

It’s certain Lesh’s constant shuffling of venerable artists is the crucial element that helps him maintain his show’s vibrancy. The constant reinvention of his music – while not losing sight of what made it popular in the first place – is what makes his show something to see.

In an interview with the Post-Star this week, Lesh described his shows in metaphysical terms.
And though I can’t speak for the rest of those in attendance, I certainly went on one heck of a musical journey.

Sounds like a show that would have been great to see. I went to Mohegan, and saw Jackie at the hotel desk on Saturday morning, and he didn't look good, at all. It makes sense that he was sick on Saturday.

Everyone has their taste in music, and I appreciate that Trey, Phish, Particle etc...may not be in their wheelhouse, that being said...if you came away disappointed from Saturday's show...please see a doctor.

There was a big locomotive heading down the tracks in Glens Falls Sat nite! Like all big engines, momentum started slow, and then was unstoppable!

I have had the honor of seeing 330 GD shows, hundreds of JGB. I've seen Phish starting in 1990 only about 15 times.

Folks...that was the real deal Sat night. It seemed like Trey leaned over to Phil after Deep Elem and said something like "OK the jitters are gone." From that point on a musical heavyweight joined the brawl.

Jackie's excellent. Larry super. Trey is simply a phenom at jamming, and it takes the music to another level. The ebb and flow, leaning, waiting attacking. Perfect! Second set was sublime, really enjoyed the return to some "Shine" licks near the end of the set. You may think Montana was the greatest QB of all time, but time to give a guy like Brady his due. That was an amazing performance from a guy that had no real practice time, just been through hell and back ,and was obviously nervous to start the gig. Nothing but kudos from me.

Thank you Phil for inviting him. Thanks to the band for letting him in. Thank you Trey for showing up, listening and playing.

You can join the band anytime you want!

Sounds from these reviews like there may have been a couple of people there who were not tripping?

Personally, I'm not sure I've been in a more tripping crowd, at least not for a long while.

Psychedelic madness in all it's glory, they GOT it.
Phil seemed astounded by the response, at the final farewell, he was very visibly blown away by the LOVE.

Whoa...

I have noticed that I was not the only one using the term "EPIC" as we walked out of the Civic Center on Saturday night...

The place was rocking- to say the least... The crowd was WHACKED and security non-existant... The lot we were parked in was like a Block Party and everyone was pretty fired-up for the show...

The rumors became reality when the house lights went down in the ol' hockey rink and all hell broke loose...

I think the true 'peak' of the first set was Trey's over-inflection of the Bertha lines "Test me, test me... Why don't you arrest me?"

It was like an inside joke for all the Northeast fans... Upstate NY was rocking, and it was like the 'good old days' in Glens Falls again... The whole night seemed to have a throwback vibe- gritty and unrelenting...

The show seemed to take on the feel of the mill town and concrete venue that hosted it... It was truly EPIC for sure...

Walking out- everyone seemed aglow at the magic that transpired... And it was a LATE night and LONG show!!!

I think the H>S>F really blew everyone away... I remember the chords of Slipknot winding down EXACTLY at midnight, and thinking "they have to end now!" only to hear those rocking beats of "Franklins Tower" come chargin' on... The place EXPLODED...

Thanks to everyone in Upstate NY for reaffiriming my beliefs in the magic of the Capital Region... The Dead and Phish both left their imprints in Albany and Glens Falls over the years- and this combination of talents on Saturday night was one the the best...

Big shoes to fill in the old Civic Center... But everyone walked out exhausted, amazed and smiling ear to ear... New York ROCKS!!!

Akins hands reins over to Grateful mayor
By MAURY THOMPSON,
thompson@poststar.com
Published: Sunday, October 21, 2007

GLENS FALLS -- Phil Lesh apparently knows cronyism goes hand-in-hand with politics.

"As my first act as honorary mayor, it is my intention to pardon Trey Anastasio," Lesh said, moments after Glens Falls Mayor Roy Akins proclaimed Lesh honorary mayor for the day.

Lesh, co-founder and bass player in the legendary band The Grateful Dead, performed Saturday evening with his current band, Phil Lesh and Friends, at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

Of course, even if mayors could issue pardons, the act would hinge on intermunicipal cooperation.

Anastasio, former frontman for the band Phish, pled guilty to a felony drug charge in Washington County court in April, and agreed to participate in the county's drug treatment court.

Anastasio was scheduled to appear as a guest star with Phil Lesh and Friends at Saturday's concert.

Akins proclaimed Lesh honorary mayor for the day at a brief ceremony in Heritage Hall, just before the band's sound check.

Akins has a tradition of proclaiming notable entertainers that appear in Glens Falls honorary mayor for a day.

Those who have received the honor include Willie Nelson, Daniel O'Donnell and Amy Grant, among others.

The intent is to make a favorable impression on entertainers, so they want to appear again in Glens Falls, or perhaps they will tell other entertainers about the hospitality, Akins said.

Lesh said he would like to come back to the area to vacation sometime, and asked what there was to do.

Civic Center Executive Director Suzanna Bernd mentioned a number of activities and cultural attractions, including The Hyde Collection.

Lesh said he enjoys art museums, and would try to visit The Hyde Collection at some point.

Some entertainers prefer the proclamation be done in private, but Lesh allowed The Post-Star to be present.

Lesh clearly enjoyed the honor.

Akins, as he was putting on his glasses to read the proclamation, said, "I have to put my cheaters on."

The 67-year-old Lesh responded, "We all have to do that these days."

Lesh interrupted Akins as the mayor began reading.

"Before I take this oath of office, is there anything I have to do?" he asked.

"Only to have fun," Akins responded, to which Lesh said, "That's what we all do."

Akins also proclaimed Robbie Taylor, production manager for Phil Lesh and Friends, and formerly The Grateful Dead, honorary lieutenant mayor for a day.

Lesh knew in advance about the proclamation, but it came as a surprise to Taylor, who said he suspected something was up when he turned the corner and saw the mayor and others present.

"I knew this was a set-up," he said.

ohhhhh maybe all you philzoners understand now what all us trey fans (Phil included) are talking about now.

Trey took some of those jams to completly different levels Sat night. If you disagree you were not there or you were just not listening, or you just dont like the place that trey takes jams.

Oh Dheads that was epic........dream come true for me.....dont come at me philzoners!!!...i love the guy and he was sober and souded great again. First time i got those chills since phish 1997 or 1998.

And just for the record i am only 28, so i only saw three dead shows and they were in 1994, so i was never in attendance for a great dead show let alone a decent dead show. So i got a chance to see phish at there peak.

But with treys lead, with phils bass lines, with jackies vocals and larrys musical talent and with the energy..that was one of the best shows i have seen in my 28 years, except maybe for a few choice phish shows while they were in there prime...95 holiday tour or 97-98 island tour or fall tours.

Talking strictly about Grateful dead material that was the best dead based show i have ever seen. Even though i love Dark star orchesra...this show crushed any DSO show i have ever seen.

I still would not mind if they turned phil up a bit (actually i wished they turned him up alot) and molitz should have been turned up a bit....and i tried but i could not really hear jackie when he was on the organ. But i am hearing he has been pretty sick with the flu the last week or so, so maybe trey being a guest gave hima chance to reover a bit and learn from a legendary improvsational guitar player.....something i think he needs a lesson in. I am not saying i did not like him but he is not that great when it comes to improvising.

Oh i am not really a fan of trey post phish....but shine to start off saturday nights second set was actually really great. You could hear when he was singing, that it was coming straight from his soul, and that he was playing with his heart and passion....and the band was right there with him the whole way....good 2nd set opener.

Great show....Now I cant wait for the Nokia Shows. Hopefully we will get some cool guests. If not who cares this band will be in great form by the time 10/31 comes around.

Phil....thank you so much for inviting trey and trey thank you so much for accepting...it was a dream come true for me.

call me a looser for saying that this was one of the best shows i ever attented but
unbroken chain Dark Star>Wharf Rat>Dark Star...then i thought the show was over and i was happy with it ending there and bang...............help>Slip>Franklins.

and any show that features Pride of c, unbroken chain and box of rain with all of them being played very well is on the top of any of my lists.

Peace to all!!

props to the whole band.
And props to trey. I hope you stay true to the program and get clean, becasue getting a glimpse of a clean trey, gives me hope that there are still some epic shows to be played in the future. You souded great red...keep it up....and SOUND GUYS TURN UP PHIL.....we go to these shows to hear phils amazng bass lines, thats the #1 reason we go.

And Philzoners before you respond to bash me
"Sometime we live no particuliar way but our own"

I was initially pumped that Trey was in at GF. The Deal/Bertha was simply off the hook.
Bertha was absolute smoke.

That being said, Trey rarely stepped aside and seemed to hog the spotlight and the leads. I do not think he took his eyes off the people directly in front of him all night.

Nothing wrong with being relatively young as long as you have some perspective about it, which it sounds like you do.

I was 20 when I first saw the Dead in 1977 and I remember by 1980 or even sooner there were already people around reminding us that they were a lot better in 1970 & then I started saying the same thing to people regarding 1977 in 1983.

This has been going on a long time ... each generation misses what came before but at the same time they get to see the new stuff with fresh eyes that the oldsters might miss.

JKC Wrote ---->"Trey rarely stepped aside and seemed to hog the spotlight and the leads. I do not think he took his eyes off the people directly in front of him all night."

I just don't agree with that at all. . .
Having watched the entire show from about the 5th row (G.A.)
video recorded more then half of it and now listened to the entire show from an audience recording. Trey spent ALOT of time trading licks with Larry. I watched Trey staring intently at Larry as he played and the two spent a lot of time playing riffs an octave apart (a' la Allman Bros). There have been several people who mention the same thing. I don't think Trey was asked to sit in for the night so he could be a rhythm guitarist. There were also several instances where the transition between Trey and Larry was seamless and potentially difficult to differentiate the two. As far as I could see (from the fifth row) Trey had his eyes shut or staring off into space for 90% of the show, the other 10% he was looking at Phil or Larry.

It started with the incredible rainbow on the way to the show. Rumors of Trey and long lines to get in sucked, and had me a bit frustrated, but I was keeping an open mind - I'm not the biggest of trey fans (I do not own one Trey recording of any sort) but hey, I come to see live music to see what can happen between like minded musicians.

I was born too late to get to see the first generation of great live rock acts in their prime, but I see as many as I can, and have gotten to see tons of different concerts by over the last few decades. In them has been some great shows, some amazing performances. This however, was just different. Never have I felt this much electricity between an audience and the band. I mean this electricity was a live, palpable thing, coursing through the civic center from the first note. I remember the first set ending and wondering how they could possibly top it in the second. And. They. Did.

I've always wondered what it was like to be at one of the truly monumental shows for the ages...and now I know. And I'm pretty sure the musicians on stage knew it too. And I'll bet any knowledgeable listened head that was at the show or hear the tapes will agree too. This was it folks. This was the show that you go the the hundreds over the many years to catch one of.

Thank you Phil Lesh for inviting a noodling (former)junkie onto stage with you to prove that truly magical music can be made in this day and age. As I am writing this, the hair is standing up on the back of my neck as I think about Saturday night in the Glens Falls Civic Center.

Listened to the show, and it is hot!!!! Trey sounds better than ever.

I will say that it is a wilder show than the reguar lineup brings on this tour.

This being said, i sympathize with the people who were disappointed they didn't get to see and hear the latest lineup that Phil has created. Two totally different animals, each with its own merit.

The show with Trey is closely aligned with the sound of a Phish/Trey Anastasio band. More psychedelic and swirling, lol, and who doesn't like that. i certainly miss it.

The core lineup without Trey has brought a more roots/blues direction to the band, and THAT IS SPECIAL AS WELL.

THANK YOU PHIL AND FRIENDS for all you do. I look forward to hearing and seeing whatever you bring to us at the NOKIA, and hopefully beyond!!!

Took me a day or two to get signed up here for some reason but I did want to pop in ans say what a wonderful time my wife and I had hanging out with a fine group of zoners for this show.

highway320 and his wife, mr & mrs Poz and fortunately, mr fabulous Mike himself. A slew of others who's login names escape me but a fine group one and all.

Veteran deadhead here who's been in the Ryan Adams camp as of late. Haven't seen Phil in a few years so it was nice to see the man again.

Wonderful, long and trippy show. I am to be counted among those who'd rather that Trey not take over the show so much but I definitely had a fantastic time. I may try to check out a more Jackie based show at the Nokia if I can snag a ticket.

So that's all. Great to meet a bunch of you and thanks always to Phil~

What I do not understand, given the every changing line up of Phil and Friends, why it is that people, like bribeard above and others, are so eager to be so critical of Trey. I saw Phish about 85 times from 89-94 and saw more dead shows in the same period...Trey was then and is now the best jamming substitute on dead tunes to JG. Period. But back to my real point which is to say that sicne the band is always changing, Trey's showing should be an accepted part of the gig. Instead, there seems to be an underlying reason why others do not like him- some fair critique I have toi admit-his singing can be soft-but his leads and sound is that of an expert in noddling- and the fact that he once toured with the dead in the early 80's is an added wamrth.

I wish I was at this show!!! He rocked at Bethel 2 years ago...

hope you can catch another show, cause jackie was a very pleasant surprise

he sang a song at mohegan sun and it brought really good memories of the 65-era dylan - a jackie tune, but written and sung ala young dylan, but fresh - very cool

I'm one of the folks who traveled to see the new lineup. While I may have been somewhat disappointed to have missed it, the fact is Jackie was sick and not up to snuff that evening, which made it a damn good thing Trey was there. And, Trey rocked it. Jackie could barely shake a maraca Saturday night. It might have been a suck-ass show without Trey, with Jackie feeling so poorly.

And, this show friggin' ROCKED!!! Long, fat and trippy.

what a good time had by all. i saw many a dead show in the 80's and its really not about personalitys or preconceved notions people have. it about digin what is going on onstage and off. onstage was some of the most impressive group of "jam" musicans and off stage was some of the most spun and loveing people i have experanced in a loooooooong time. i know i am a little older and craizer than i was but i really miss strangers stopping strangers just to shake.... and whatever is in the glass....:-) i miss that feeling and it happend for me that night. i hope we can all see what we have and let it bloom for others. we were blessed that night i hope everyone gets the same feeling i got some point on this fall tour.

I do believe most of us concur with you on that one!! It definitely happened for me, too, and the folks I was hanging with. That feeling in an old-school upstate New York venue where many of us saw the Grateful Dead is a special one, and I am grateful to have relived some of it Saturday night :-)

Phil Lesh draws Civic Center's largest crowd this fall

Monday, October 22, 2007

GLENS FALLS — Attendance at the Phil Lesh and Friends concert at the Glens Falls Civic Center on Saturday was "close to 4,000," Suzanna Bernd, the arena’s executive director said.

Bernd said it was the second largest attendance so far on the band’s fall tour that began Sept. 22 in California.

The promoter was pleased with the attendance and experience, and is open to promoting future concerts at the Civic Center, she said.

Seating capacity for the Phil Lesh concert was about 5,000, Bernd said.

Though the event did not sell out, the attendance was the highest of concerts at the Civic Center this fall.

Amy Grant drew only 1,050 people to an Oct. 13 concert with the Glens Falls Symphony at the Civic Center.
