Mother Hips
Hardly Strictly Bluegrass
Arrow Stage, GGP
October 7, 2007
This is a Mother Hips review, but first a picture of Barry because Sless is always more! MoonAlice was up after the Hips so Barry stopped by to tune up early...
A great, great set by the Mother Hips, always great to see these guys in an outdoor setting! Being new to the festie they were given the 11 am Sunday time slot, which required effort for even the most dedicated of their fans! They played a country set, appropriate for the day, but they certainly got a bit of the rock show in there too!
They played a classic Hips set, completely ignoring the new album. Of course it's classic for a reason so no complaints here (except that they didn't play MY song, but that's a very small compaint.) Transit Wind was a nice ballad without being too slow or ballady, Tim does such a great job singing pained lyrics. But the song stuck in my head after this weekend was Colonized, a tune that could easily belong to Neil and Crazy Horse: someone picks it up and sells it back to you, reflecting on the non-stop consumerism of today's society, I think Neil would approve This was definitely one of the rockers of the day, even got a bit of a feedback jam in!

I like how they dressed to match their instruments, Pauls hair is in the way in the pic but the top of his shirt has all kinds of cowboy fancy embroidery on it
They'll be back in SF on December 21st and 22nd at the GAMH, so mark your calendars now
nice review Emily, I love those Hip guys
>I like how they dressed to match their instruments
That's some attention to detail right there, from the musicians who did it to Emily who noticed. Fun!
Transit Wind is my all time favorite Hips song...
