Less than a week to go before the boys and sister Joan roll into St. Louis, MO. Welcoming them to town with open arms and a open mind!!! I think this will be a very high energy show!!! Deadheads from all over the Midwest are converging on St. Louis for the event. There will be a Shakedown Street in the back parking lot for this show. Also, I will warn you about the city of Maryland Heights, MO. There is a NO open container law in the city. To keep the cops off your back, I recommend you pour your alcoholic beverages into a colored plastic cup. I hope everyone enjoys the show!!! PEACE people!!!
Here, here; bring on the Show...How about "Music" and a little "Liberty" It doesn't matter I love em all! Everyone enjoy the show...I'll be handing out free shows and trading for lot shirts in the lot before the show...Look for the tan Chevy with the "Led-Zep" plates. Enjoy! 8^)~
A few other notes about St. Louis.
Maryland Heights Police (which will have a VERY strong presence on and around the facility) are notoriously hard core. You can expect srict enforcement of the Open Container Law mentioned above as well as possible road blocks after the show on either side of the Mo River. Be careful...
There are a couple of Casinos (Harras and Ameristar) nearby. If you are seeking lodging, there are cheaper places near Dorsette Road or Westport (cheaper than staying at Riverport places) and both are a short cab ride over to the show. We will be cabbing it so as to avoid high parking $ and Police.
On a positive note, I know St. Louis is buzzing with anticipation. I am not sure how to put up the link, but there was a nice cover article about the boys and Willie (both of whom appeared on the cover) of this weeks Get Out magazine(the free entertainment mag that accompanies the Thursday St. Louis Post Dispatch). You might be able to track it down at
http://www.STLTODAY.com
It was in yesterdays paper.
Looking forward to Willie hopping in for a few tunes and YES... Liberty would be tremendous!
Take care and be safe...
Phil
I hear ya John on the open container laws. I remember back in 95 when I was there and cops were busting EVERYONE for drinking. Once the word got out that it was ok to consume "adult beverages" out of a cup all the heads were throwin their cans and bottles away while other heads were going behind them and recycling the empties. Anything for "tour cash" I guess, huh! I myself am looking very forward to the show. I have not yet recieved my tix yet from THE DEAD TICKETING! I called them the other day and asked WHAT THE F**K and they said they had a "problem with shipping" so they should be here today (Friday) its getting too close for comfort, but I have faith that my seats will be here by the time that I need them!!! I myself will be staying at Harrah's because it is close and it is a party in itself. THE DEAD are comin to town soon, Ya'll ready as I am????????????? See YA at the show!!!
If you have lawn seats for this show, be aware of the security personal roaming the lawn. They are looking for people participating in illegal activities. Keep your eyes open people!!!
5 days 3 hours 31 minutes!
I think I'm starting to get excited!
I cant wait, only 5 days.
I'm from St.Louie, and this is the only show i'm able to go with - what with work and classes.
I hope they rip it up.
St Louis here too. I can't wait for Wednesday. Definitly be aware out in the lawn. Saw a few people get nailed. Just be smart and alert and things will be cool.
Interesting little Dead St. Louis connection. The band decided to go with a different catering service for this tour but on the 22nd (aprox.) their new caterer broke his leg. So the head chef at Duff's resturant (located at 396 N. Euclid in the Central West End of St. Louis) Jimmy Voss, who has been catering midwest Dead shows for years has come to the rescue!!! So you know the boys and Joan will be eating good when they get to good ole St. Lou!!! Can't wait for the show it'gonna be great!
Another interesting connection. The San Francisco Giants are in town to play the St. Louis Cardinals @ Busch Stadium on July 2nd. Game time 7:10p.m. As everyone knows The Dead are from San Francisco and they used to live @ 710 Ashbury Street.
HEHEHE John...lay off the bong.
Where are we meeting?
I live in Clayton...gonna go from work to the show.
Got an extra pavillion for anyone who needs.
Be kind and hook me up you got it!
Oooops, I over toked on that last bong hit!!! Everyone is meeting in front of the will call booth @ 6:00p.m. See you there.
i am getting stoked!!...i held off buying tix because i had a feeling some would come my way and they did...won pair of lawn tickets from a local radio station for knowing what made bear famous!!...am doing this show and the moe./dylan/dead in joilet...hope to meet some zoners...peace

Did Joan really sing Fire? How was it compared to the version Mickey does? I need to hear it. That is so cool. I dig Mickey's version, but I've been Joans'n to hear Fire given the full vocal treatment with someone singing 100 percent. That must have been really special.
Joan Definetly didnt sing FIRE
it was mickey, believe me.
Joan wouldve been great on it , but we go good ole Mick

Who is Jhonnie Johnson?
Judge dissmissed claim of copyright infringement in lawsuit against Chuck Berry
Pianist Johnnie Johnson's song-writing suit against rock 'n' roll legend Chuck Berry is no longer about accusations of copyright infringement but all about allegations of fraud and whether Berry took advantage of Johnson's alcoholism. In an order issued in St. Louis on Monday, U.S. District Judge Donald J. Stohr dismissed Johnson's claim of copyright infringement. Stohr said that Berry cannot be liable for such infringement if he and Johnson co-wrote such classics. But Johnson's suit survives because Stohr left intact the claim that Berry misled Johnson into believing that, other than through his work as a studio musician, he had no right to money earned by the songs that made Berry an international music icon. The next step in the case is mediation. Stohr has set a deadline of July 31 for a mediator - yet to be selected - to report whether the case can be settled out of court. Martin Green, one of Berry's lawyers, said Friday he was pleased with Stohr's ruling. Johnson's lawyer, Mitch Margo, was unavailable for comment. More info at:
Chuck Berry 2001

The K. Richards in the above song is Kieth.
"Johnson played in Berry's band until 1973. He fell out of the public eye until the mid-'80s, when Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards found him during the making of the Berry documentary "Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll." At that time, Johnson was working as a bus driver.
In the film, Richards said he believes that Johnson was a creative force behind Berry's songs, noting that many of them are written in keys more comfortably played on a piano than on a guitar.
Johnson, who was given a Pioneer Award in September by the Rhythm & Blues Foundation, is recognized as one of the greatest pianists in rock history. He's released five solo albums since 1986, featuring such guest musicians as Richards, Eric Clapton, blues guitarist Buddy Guy and E Street Band drummer Max Weinberg."

Curious serindipitous note: Johnnie Johnson's bio says his birthday is 7/8/24. So when Joan turns 41 next week, Johnnie will turn 79.
great johnson info folks, keep it coming- love that timing hepcat! What was the tempo of the fire on the mountain?

wow. was hoping to hear these at red rocks, hopefully they'll get played again. looks like an amazing set list. especially if joan did sing fire. hope it was a good one for you midwest folk
>but the "deadhead" has a refined pallet for music, and nothing will change that.
What's that mean?
Looks like a smoking set. Especially with Johnnie Johnson. Folk's if you can find it, pick up his CD "Johnny B Bad" got some fine tunes on there including "Tanqueray". Clapton and Keith Richard guest as well as the NRBQ rhythm section.
Hepcat..nice setlist format...Thanks for calling me from the show..
Would be neat to get hold of observers notes on LSD experiments from early 60's..Especially ones w/ Kesey..
Who sang FOTM...!!..Maybe Phil said..OK..we let you hump that thing but you cant sing Fire anyome.
"Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll."
-one of my late night favs.
thanks hep!
This one looks awesome on paper. 20 minute Viola to start...
What are these tunes?
*Twilight Time (Joan & Bobby, Bob acoustic)
*#Tanqueray>
Also, I was hoping Joan would sing Comes a Time - was it awesome? China Doll at Great Woods was just amazing...
how was johhny b goode
Ok, WHO sang Fire?
Twilight Time is an old Platters song done previously by Ratdog.
Tanqueray is a song written by Johnny Johnson and Keith Richards, I believe played by Ratdog while Johnny Johnson toured with Ratdog a few years back.
Keith Richards Kicks Ass
(thought I'd add that)
WHO SANG FIRE
If Joan actually did, we may be on the path toward recovery from Mickey's delusions of singing ability. Does Mickey have a right to sing it, seeing as how he wrote much of the music? Yes. Does that mean he should sing it, considering that he can't sing? NO.
Mickey sang FOTM....not Joan
-David
LOL! I copied that "deadhead has refined musical tastes" by accident. What I meant to ask was:
>9:45 Rob and Jeff get a lesson from Billy K.
What's that mean?
sounds like Billy schooled 'em during the "duets" piece of drums & space.
That means that Jeff and Rob played keys and Billy K. went off.
That is the best Billy K. I've seen in years. Perhaps even decades. But mind you, I've never seen Billy without the Dead.
In my opinion, the core group of musicians I saw last night have improved over the years.
Phil was clear on the lead, Billy and Mickey were right in time, Weir fit in perfect. The sound was turned up, Jimmy KICKED ASS!!!!!!!!!
For the first time, I didn't miss Jerry.
Personal highlights:
Viola>>Jam>>Viola>>Dupree's [stop] Mr. Charlie.
That half hour (+) alone was worth the ticket. That was a Viola to rival 9/1/02 (yes, I was there)
This band was better than the P&F I saw at Aspen.
Help>>Slipknot!>>Franklin's Tower>>Tieknot!
Saw hot versions of this in the 80s. They got nothing on last night.
Johnnie B. Goode with the original Johnnie on keys in his home town of St. Louis...priceless.
Tight hot, stright rock.
Tanqueray was done in standard St. Louis blues style, very nice to mix in.
The Terrapin Station smoked. Billy, Mickey, Phil and Bob made me like that song again...after seeing it so often and so butchered in the late 80s and early 90s, that I came to hate it.
All in all a fantastic show. All I needed to see from this tour.
Sold my Red Rocks tickets to a greatful head in the lot after the show for less than cost. He was joyful, and promised to miracle someone at the 7.10 RR show.
>>how was johhny b goode
According to several folks into the local blues scene, Johnnie Johnson is the "Johnny" that Chuck Berry was refering to in the song Johnny B. Goode.
Hey Schulman,
Great to see your name up here. Looks like you are back to traveling to see the boys. How the hell are you doing?
This sounds like a great show, especially the second set. We saw Joan sing a great Mr Charlie last week at PNC.
I remember Johnny Johnson coming on to play the keys and sing Tanqueray as a guest at the final jam of the 1996 Further Festival in Camden NJ. Does anyone else remember that?
Uncle Al
>>>>Johnnie Johnson is the "Johnny" that Chuck Berry was refering to in
Deep down in West Virgina, close to Clarksdale
Way back up in the Blue Ridge Mountains among the evergreens
There stood a log cabin made of earth and wood
Where lived a country boy named Johnny B. Goode
Who never learned to read or write so well
But he could play piano just like a-ringin' a bell
He used to carry his guitar in a piano sack...
"What? Uh Chuck you better change that to guitar if you want this to sound right. And how about New Orleans, nobody will believe a country boy from West Virgina can play the blues" ;)
Thanks to the boys and sister Joan, for the trip on the Roller Coaster ride last night!!! You really made me feel like I was on The BOSS roller coaster ride at Six Flags St. Louis. The music was weaving in and out, up and down and all around!!! I was Reelin' and a Rockin'!!! YES!!!
This show was INCREDIBLE!!! Super industrial strength melt down 2nd set. Can't wait to hear this one. Also- we got a Brotherhood Of Light liquid lightshow that was mind bogling. The Dead are alive.
Just got in from the show last night and it was alot of fun! First set was pretty solid. Nice Viola Lee opener, but Mr. Charlie was definently the highlight. Joan can wale and i was thinking all night long that i wanted more. Highlights include Mr. Charlie, Red Rooster, Fire on the Mtn (which Mickey DID sing), and Comes a Time. It was a good night, but i think they were rather off. Bob was blowing alot of lyrics left and right, which Joan recovered for alot of the time, and they had problems coming into some sections of songs. After Comes a Time they built up the jam and started to go into Terrapin Station, but nobody knew when to go through with it so they finally got there and nobody was singing so then Phil busted out the lyrics out of nowhere making it feel very acquired. I love this band but this had to be and off night. Alot of peeps are raving about it, but i saw this band at alpine and this fall and they were alot smoother then. I have also heard shows from this tour that are smoking. I will say that when it was good it was DAMN good and when it was off it wasnt pretty bad but those points are few and far between. They would play one song that would be mediocre then smoke the next one like a good lay. All and all a good night and well worth the 8 hour drive.
well here goes-
arrived into StLou around 3, no traffic yet and parties already in full swing.
the pre party begins in the room and after all the old buddies have shown it is off to the show.
it is 6ish, Willie is on and the lot is not raging but not patrolled either.
Catch the rest of Willie's set rom the top o' the lawn. We head to our seats which happened to be second row center!(thank you GDTSTOO) not long after we see Mickey and Billy stage left. Billy gives us a point and smile after a few shouts.
The band comes on with Bobby's daughter sitting in on fairy costume. Worries of sound issues from being so close were dispelled quickly with the first strong crunchy chord of Viola Lee Blues. well, we were hoping for this at some point but first song was definitely a good sign. big crazy version with a little spacy segment that while coming back to the verse had a Cumberland tease among others. this was just huge and made the trip right there for us. Jimmy had some real strong solos in this and Phil laid down some phat bombs. no Barraco on this one. Chimenti on organ.
A little jam quickly became something familiar but what....oh Duprees. ok, Bobby singin this w/ Joan. first time by this band, I think. don't blow it please. like ol Jer did from time to time. so what does he do? second line Bob blows it! pretty funny but it is very evident that they are reading the lyrics off the floor and Bob still can't get it right. they rally to the finish and it is somehow strong at the end.
If there is a jam between Duprees and Mr C it is very brief. enough time to get WIllie on and strap in and right into Mr Charlie! this was so right on. Joan nailed it and with feeling. The band played the shuffle into a boogie and it ws a real crowd pleaser. good stuff. willie even peeled off a few nice licks. Our vantage point was killer. the smiles that everyone spoke of from the band were on total display.
Then JohnnieJohnson joined the band and they then went into a song that I didn't know which hasn't happened at a Dead related show for a long time.it was fun but was ironic that Bob knew every word to that one but couldn't get a handle on Duprees. the into tanquray which I thought was going to be Gone Fishin. This ws fun but it wastarting to be what I had feared with all the sit-ins. The set besides the train wreck in DDB was killer but now starting to bum on the song choices. Was still alot of fun and I knew they still had something up their sleeve.
While Rooster is kind of a tired choice from the blues numbers, it really had some power to it and Bob really loves singin' that song. Watching him in action up close was areal treat. don't worry we gauged our distance to be out of spitting range.
then the meat: The Lovelight we heard coming and man did it shine! very strong Joan vocals. Her dancing and such was great I thought. The band fed off her energy all night. Not sure why some folks get so uptight about that but doesn't detract for me at all. Bob and Joan play off each other for a very sexy version. to us, that was a homerun. Set ended. and while it was quick it seemed, it was so damn hot that it was a welcome chance to cool off. Theylooked extremely pleased with themselves. Shine on me!
Met with all the crew and everyone was enjoying themselves. Short break with refreshments and back to the seats for a funky weird jam that has hints of Playin but moves into Watchtower.
Things started to get strange here. Bob's little move of pausing in btween verses seems to throw the band off a bit. they then slow it down a step,mid-jam. which is funky and seems to work after a hiccup. The end has a strong jam that makes this version a keeper for me. A step above in the intensity from the first set.
A short jam and into Fire and after seeing this at Broo I knew that Jimmy wails on this and he did this night too. The whole band digs in deep and the grrove is strong. Mickey's vocals are a non factor to me. It was his song and I always kinda liked that old rapping version from the early seventies that was always "Philler" on tapes. Not a big fan of that now but they really rocked this down.
Drums came rattling on the heels of the fire with some thunder to cool us down. But no such luck. Drums was amazing! to start Billy stayed on his kit and kicked out a killer jam with both key players. A total highlight! A little Other One tease to end it and Mickey returns to join Billy and they do an assortment of jams that lead into Mickey grinding the beam and blowing some minds for sure. The sound everywhere I went was very good. crisp and clear. Not enough Phil down close but is there ever enough Phil? the light system for the drummers seemed to be in effect towards the end of the bit and it was all way trippy. whew!
Space was even more so but brief and into a little melt that slipped into He's Gone. A great, soulful version that while had a nod to the ol' fella, wasupbeat and a great sing-along. nice choral ending with Joan and Bob really shining here. Jimmy also had some nice lines in here and was very careful not to get going too fast. which is key, obviously.
the Lady w/ a fan was ok but Phils vocals don't really work for me here but this looks like agreat ime to get around and see friends who had a goos spot in the center back a ways. The jam after was kinda disjointed and a real struggle on stage at times it seemed.
Comes A Time you could here comin a mile away and it was sweet. Joan was very reserved in her delivery and her stage presence. She sang a wonderful version and the band was slow enough to give it the dynamics it needs.
the whole Terrapin thing tonight just couldn't really get going, I thought. A few passages were good but others not so much. Phil made it tough on Joan to keep up with odd timing. A big jam cmae out of this however and they kinda got their groove back it seemed. A caucophomy type jam. swelling feedback. cool stuff.
The Help-Slip-Franks was great. The help Bob sang well with a slight slip in there. It really swayed and led into a rippin Slipknot. wow. the first drum breal is a little off but the second one just flails. franklins was great but Phil can't seem to get a handle on this one either.
back down front fro the quick JBG encore and what a blast! As we yell thank you to the stage, Jimmy takes both arms and points directly at th two of us and says..." no, thank you!"....classic moment.
Sorry for the endless review. kinda cathartic as today on the way home got a call on my cell from a friend that an old friend of ours from high school was killed along with her two children by her husband, who thenoffed himself. sad story and brought me down real quick. my heart goes out to her family and friends. a wake will happen the night before the Somerset show with the bard(s).
celebrate life!
sat 2nd row center. wow! viola was hot. duprees was close to a train wreck, but a nice recovery to end it. mr. charlie was the best. joan started the beat with the drummers on this one.great to see all the guests, but cant wait till red rocks with just them.by far the "lovelight" to end the first set was extremely full of energy. included a nice false ending too.
set was very jammy.watchtower opener was not my first choice, but was very well played. fire was huge. i mean jimmy has finally done justice to this song. his lead in this one was stunning. was good enough that i didn't care about the lead vocal. jam outof fire was with both keyboard players and billy. monster chemistry during this segment between the three of them. teased the crap out of the other one, then both drummers. great drums with exceptional lights. especially the spinning diamonds on the big hanging drums.
all of post space was very jammy and spacey.
he's gone was by far the shiznit. johnny b, goode was again, not my first choice but was a welcome surprise. this show deserves a good rating. lots of fun was had by all. still was not a a+ show. last fall at the rosemont in chi town blew doors on this one. hang in ther folks, this band is going to really get going in the next month. don't miss them.
so, I guess you liked the show...huh Cleve?
we should hit a show together sometime bro.
hahahaha!
Walstib -
Are you referring to the former lead singer of the Gooneybirds? Very sad story...
yes I was. a tragedy, for sure.
Jess was very cool and a sweet soul.
her dream was to sing with Jerry.
Sorry for your loss. What a senseless tragedy.
I didn't know her myself. My 6th grade teacher was a really cool guy, Mr. Ryder, who was the father of the bass player (Chris Ryder, I think). He used to bring his guitar in to class (Mr. Ryder, that is), and we would all sing Willie's "On the Road Again" while he played.
Do you still reside in MN?
I remember Ryder. it has been a long time though.
No, I moved away back in '89 but stay in touch with friends and look forward to seeing them before the show up there.
Well It's been a couple of days and I have had a chance to digest the show...so here it goes.... First the parking lot...plenty of cool people but plenty of security and Cops...The questioned anyone and everyone who attepmted to sell anything and asked for a permit...which no one had so the shops where closed up...We did see people in handcuffs...don't know why or for what but it was just an example of the feeling in the lot...Next the entrance...empty your pockets and open up your smokes...thats what I was asked when gaining entry. So far the vibe was " not cool "
As a side note once I found my seat the folks around got a good laugh when I was told I couldn't smoke my inspected cigarettes INSIDE...uh its an outdoor pavilion so what is really inside...but out from under the roof I went to enjoy my smoke. I did enjoy the thought of the placed filled with heads and billows of blue smoke rising to the roof once the show got under way.
The music
Willie was great but I wont mention it cause I dont know enough about his music to say if he was on or off...but enjoyed it...
On to the Dead
Viola Lee Blues, Duprees Diamond Blues and Mr. Charlie hit the spot...the band was great and Joan really brought a new side out in Mr Charlie that was welcome by all.Twilight Time was good...for the first set..Then they added Johnnie Johnson for the common drinking Tanqueray..they have had him as a guest and he has played this song the past three times I have seen shows in St Louis so it was no suprise...execpt for the massive feedback. Little Red Rooster falls in this same catagory as Bobby loves to play it with Johnnie. Although the band lit it up so a good save and Lovelight was rockin and a good set closer.
2nd set Set 2: Watchtower just does not sit well with me. Bobby does his version with breaks between the words and it just doesn't work for me...Fire On The Mountain was better than I thought it would be. I have never loved the Mickey rap version but they did it strong and it was OK. Drumz/Space...WHOA...Ok they torched the minds of many a person..Just awesome...He's Gone was good...Jimmy had good licks and the framework was there...then comes Lady with a Fan...hmmm...would love to hear this song normally but Phil slowed it down to a crawl...they had no energy and the crowd seemed to loose interest in it. Comes a Time was next sung by Joan...and I dont think I have really hit on this but I love Joan...for this song...for her vocals and for her dancin...she brings a whole new side out of the band...Terrapin Station was still slow as was lady and comes a time but they just didn't recover the feel with the crowd...so just when you think oh well it was fun...the bust out a smokin Help / Slip Franklin's Tower and the band was on..Jimmy was on...the whole thing came together...they had me...I was on the bus...Where do we go next....and then Johnny B. Goode...oh well...I cant wait until Chicago to see em again...
I only saw 2 people get tickets for violating the NO open container law in Maryland Heights (the fine cost $250.00). And I also saw 3 people get arrested. That's not a whole lot of people getting busted by the cops out of the approx. 19,000 people who attended the show. I entered the venue at 7:00pm and was NOT searched at all!!! I was able to take some outstanding pictures of the boys & sister Joan from my front row right section seat!!! I had an all around great time at the show!!! Many Thanks to the band!!!
Unclejohn...I guess getting there later was better for the lot and the entrance...I was in the lot at 3 pm and the scene was trying to take form....I will say the lot was better after the show...and overall I had a great show...my review was just that...my take on the night...some good ..some bad...some great....
I was in the 4th row during Fire. Mickey sang it, not Joan. Best version I've heard him do, and she helped with the chorus.
Joan rocks, for all those who didn't know. She carries the melodies well and fills in the gaps where Bobby and Phil just can't do it. I welcome her and the others to the band.
Great show, but terrible venue in the lot. The boys should know better than to throw their fans to the wolves that are lot security at UMB aka Riverport. Seems like they'd want to avoid troubles and pick venues that are friendly to the heads. That way, bad press just doesn't happen and the band won't be banned because fans show up to vend, drink, etc. (Not defending those things, just that it's inevitable, like teenage sex, so instead of pretending not to talk about condums (i.e. pretending vending, etc. doesn't occur) the band should only pick venues that are friendly to their fans. Period!
Great gig, boys and girls, and well worth the drive from Kansas and ticket money.
