Just got back. Solid if unspectacular show. Highlights were the Bertha > Deal opener, Shakedown and the Cryptical > Other One. Not on the scale of last night or Friday, but a fun time was had by all.

Ill tell you what- just got back, and tonight was better than last night.
On paper, yes the show from yesterday LOOKS longer and better on the internet read, but it WASNT. Ryan Adams was eh. Tonight blew last night away, playing-wise. They opened her up.
Phil could have caused a nuclear accident with what he was doing.
Cryptotherone was phenomenal. Clearly the highlight with the spacey stuff around it.
Dynamite.
Good Night.

I must HUMBLY disagree with Scott M.
Monday's show was much higher energy and the extended jams were stellar, not to mention the show was an hour and a half LONGER. Although i will agree the cryptical-->O.O.-->death don't-->O.O. was phennomenal

Just got back. After last nights blow out gig I had to go back. Went with out a ticket in hand and it was a tough ticket. I ran in to John Molo outside the gig. I called him by name and he stopped to talk to me. I told him how grateful I was to have been at last nights show and how much I appreciated the efforts by all band members. told him i thought the show was just amazing. I also told him I ttraveled far and wide tio see him and he said " I keep telling all the younger guys (in the band) that we have to keep pushing every night because of the many Phans that travel so far to see us". We talked a bit more. I then asked him if he could get me in. He said" I would like to but we are so packed in there right now. He mentioned the fire marshalls but said he would try. We shook hands and I said I would see him inside later and to that he replied "I am sure you will". I continued to look for a ticket and low and behold Jackie green is making his way in to the venue. I call his name and he stops. He was with a smoking blond. I told him I love yeasterdays gig and thanked him for making it a great night. He smiled, shook my hand and walked in.

Tonights show was a lot of fun. All songs were played well. My favorites were the bertha>Deal and the Brown sugar>Shakedown,

Good night to you all.

Ran into Merry Prankster on the rail tonight, as well as many other new/old friends. I bump into Poz (on a beer run during Set 1) near the doors to the bar tripping balls. What happened Poz? I bought you that water you needed so badly, but when I turned around you went poof! Hope you made it out OK.

Last night's show may well have been better and more "epic" whatever the fuck that means (I haven't heard it yet) but who the hell cares? Once you get up to a certain level of excellence, it's just nitpicking.

Tonight's show blistered from the get go. The band came out to rock and that's what they did and it was Loud. I'm pretty sure it was louder than Halloween and the 1st (the other two shows I've seen).
A good omen when I walked in the hall at 7 was that they were playing Coltrane's Ascension over the PA -- all 45 minutes of it, some of the best music ever made and then they played Ascension II leading into the band's entry.
The first set was the usual length of most of these shows at Nokia - 1 hour straight up.
Second set they continued the straight out rock. I began to wonder if it was going to be like that all night and how they would take it out there.
Answered that soon enough with Cryptical. Then going into the Other One was one of the longest set ups I've heard before Phil finally pulled the trigger on the bomb.
Death Don't Have No Mercy caught me by surprise, even though I knew Mule played it the other night it never occurred to me that Phil would pull that one out of his hat. It takes balls to sing that song since Garcia (and of course Reverend Davis) own that song, but I think they pulled it off. Then back into the Other One still cranking on all cylinders and such a sweet way to close it out with Brokedown Palace. Perfectly constructed set if you ask me.
It was actually a slightly shorter set than usual since they ended before the encore at around 11:25 but after the power of the Other One sandwich with the meat of Death Don't Have No Mercy in the middle, there was really no other place to go that wouldn't have been a bit anticlimactic especially with the whole crowd singing along on Brokedown.
But by the end of the encore it ended up at about the same time as usual (with the exception of the night before) right around midnight.
I talked to a lot of older heads (over 50) who were quite satisfied with the whole thing, especially The Other One / DDHNM / TOO/ Palace sequence.
The first set wasn't too shabby either, a lot of high energy stuff, more so than usual for most of this tour.

that's the first Other One, right? I swore I heard a little of it Thurs night and thought we'd get it Sat night...

I walked home from work last night and took a route that went right by Nokia. the line was to the corner of the building before 6.30pm. how long did it take to gain entry last night? were there delays like Monday night?

thx.

i thought last night was an excellent show. Everything WAS VERY WELL PLAYED. I agree with the above writer that its silly to sit here and say this was better than that show and that show was better, but the bottom line was that i did not really here any mistakes last night at all. The jams were tight and interesting and really i was blown away by the qualilty of the music last night. Not the setlist, but the bands excution of these songs last night was just excellent.

My favorite jams of the night were def. during Tom thumb blues becasue after they finished they went into this really cool jam flawlwessly.

Then the scond set blew me away. The shakedown was groovy and the jam was completly funked out. Molits and phil really drove it here and LC was just on all night long. Oh the PHIL BOMBS during The Other One were the best of heard all tour.

To end this review i just want to say thansks to the band, they were right on key all night. And the things phil was doing with his bass was just amazing!!!!!!!! See you all friday.

I think most of us Phans agree that the best show is the one you are going to NEXT!

Once the show is over, it is over, from a live expereince standpoint. Of course we can relive it to some extent, but I, personally, cannot reconnect to that moment of the live experience.

With that in mind, every show is great, and I cannot wait for my next show this FRIDAY.

I cannot get enough of this band.

I hope you all are savoring every moment. it sure sounds that way.

It's a great time to be a Phil+Friends phanatic!!!

Thank you PAF!!!!

I agree...it was a beautifully played show. The second set was probably some of the best playing by Larry that I have seen so far. Shakedown was excellent...great, great Molitz jams...they should let him lead a jam a bit longer. The Beat it On Down the Line? Larry was fucking insane...the man is just way, way talented. The Brokedown was stunning. Just a great show. Thanks from the bottom of my heart to Phil. He sure does love us.

Fun, unpredictable show.

I thought the first set left something to be desired although there was a nice jam in Tom Thumbs. Larry played some nice leads in Big River. The Night they drove Old Dixie Down was cool to see. Cosmic Charlie has become a bit of a novelty song.

Second set was a whole other animal. Really well played. Brown Sugar? Okay yeah I guess. Shakedown was fantastic, the turning point of the show. Had it been a clunker, I think the show would have been too but it was great. Nice transition into Revolution (funny, when they started Cosmic Charlie, I thought it was Revolution), great version, very well done for rare song. I always loved Beat It On Down The Line and to see it played by Phil was a treat. Nice job on vocals by Larry and nice solos. Fun and good. Worth getting the tape just for that. Other One>Death Don't Have No Mercy>Other one was inspired. Really, really cool going back into The Other One. Excellent. Brokedown Palace was a nice touch.

Not a show for the ages but there were parts of the second set I would put up there with some of my favorite Phil moments. Glad I went.

everything sweet magnolia said,

this was a tight sharp rocking show,
a great follow up to the previous night.

Larry delivered on Big River and Biodtl,
Really good guitar playing,
Jackie rocked on the Beatles n Stones,
and Shakedown Street was hopping.
Phil built up that Other One to epic proportions,
the floor was vibrating near the stage from his bass, really, and Death Dont was really good.
Molitz did some nice bluesy sounding keyboard work,
And a nice surprise NFA encore,
Solid show all around and yes this recording should sound really good.

First off I find no point in comparing this show against any others. It really just becomes an arbitrary opinionated pissing match when no one is right. That being said I thought this show was awesome.

First set had some feel good jams and solid playing. Personal highlights included the jam into Deal as well as the Deal the Gone Wandering, and the Cosmic Charlie. I loved the end of Cosmic when they kind of played it acapella. I have wanted to see this song for sooooooooo long so it was a real treat and put me in a great mood.

Second set though, wow I didn’t know what to expect but I was amazed by the end. Great opener with Jackie singing Brown Sugar, he really just killed this. Shakedown though, meh. I heard this on Halloween and I just don’t like this bands take on it, neither Jackie nor Larry have the funk guitar sound to play it imo. Phil, Molo, and Molitz are playing well and these guys just continue with blues chords, which they do well, but Shakedown needs to be funky not so much bluesy. The jam into revolution was awesome, very new speedway esque, and solid blues hooks throughout. It really picked up momentum and when they dropped into Revolution the place erupted. But after Halloween I wasn’t looking for covers again, I wanted some Dead and I was unsure where the set was going.

But the show took off. There was a brief little break after Revolution Jackie playing drums with Molo, little guitar thing and then Phil comes back out and they lay down some space, thick space, great space. After about 5 minutes of this they dropped into a beautifully played Cryptical, and then took off into The Other One. This was light-years beyond Halloweens attempts at the same combo, if you were at that and unimpressed. The Other One just powered and Phil must have been at the mic a half dozen times about to enter into it lyrically but just backed off and continued to build the energy. Jackie and Larry were just going off, with Phil and Molo driving them forward. It really had the rawness of a late 60’s Other One, really, really well played. But to get a Death Don Have No Mercy was just the tops. I couldn’t believe they broke it out and Jackie nailed it on guitar and vocally. It was incredible and I was so happy to make it in to hear that song. There was a little too much chatter behind me but it could not take away from this, absolutely beautiful. Then they launched back into the Other One and ended again with a heartfelt Brokedown. Another one of those moments when I was just so pleased I made my way in for it. Incredible. The Not Fade Away was a great way to end, and when Phil dropped that heavy shake the room base lines I knew I had to get in for the rest of these shows. I thought this second-second set was incredible seems like others did too, cant wait to see them again, hopefully tomorrow. Thank you phil seems like your having as much fun as we are out there.

Excellent reviews from both James and Matty and TOM, I like all three takes on the show from youse.

I too heard a little of Speedway just before Revolution, thanks for reminding me James.

i am so satisfied after i saw the last 2 nights...i always try to hit 2 shows back to back...you get no repeats usually, you are bombarded with the city, the bars, the great food, the amazing lights, ads in times square...and the music, after you realize it you saw like 10 hours of phil, songs such as viola, scarlet, shake, the other one etc, you are blown away...like one big show...shows in the city are so different than any other city, just so much energy...

this band is certainly more song blues oriented than any other (ive seen every line up),and overall maybe the weakest...by that i mean the youngest, most unfamiliar with gd music, not masters of their instruments yet, not as confident as older guys (jackies like 13 years old, particle dude is young), but as phil says he wants it this way...always new and different takes...but i always love it, the new takes, the new chords etc...larry is so unusual as a musician, never really takes off but keeps the ship steady the whole trip, and jackie is fun and like a young dylan, really cool phrasings...its jsut that when yove seen what other members have done in the past (trey, headband, joan, the Q etc) you want it that way again...but all things change, and thats life and p&f, always changing...anyway, i usually focus on molo and phil anyway, they should jsut tour alone...great 2 days overal...great sound if you were closer, great bars, clean bathrooms etc...

highlights lst night were the brown sugar>shakedown>jam>revolution, so much energy and power, i was dancing hard...first set was ok, dixie was the best, but needed more jammimng
,,,and the first bomb when they hit the other one was WOW!!!!! and JG did a great job on death dont...really slow and meaningful

some additional comments on last night

Phil was not the bandleader - he was at times, of course, but so was Jackie, and Molo, and perhaps especially Larry

to me, last night was Larry's coming out party

I've known him for many years, for his great work with Bob Dylan - when he joined up with Phil for that great late 2005 tour, he was a bit tentative at times, even up to last night, I haven't heard him drive a show like this.

Whoever said he doesn't have a psychedelic bone in his body wasn't there last night to witness those great X factor jams, largely led by Larry, especially after Shakedown, all through the Cryptical/Other One sequence - pretty much the whole show

During intros, he got an appropriately rousing reception and the usually stoic Larry Campbell seemed very pleased indeed, as he should have been

well done

and a question

as Jackie & Friends was to do Conan tonight, and that's cancelled on account of the writer's strike, where's the stealth show? ;-)

Let's all please refrain from shortening Jackie Greene to "JG": <<(>>

Don't get me wrong. I was impressed with Jackie's performance on 11/1 and I am looking forward to seeing the 11/8 show. Greene's a talented guy.

But in the context of this site and in the larger context of the Grateful Dead, there's only one JG.

(Again, this is not a knock against Jackie.)

Last night was my second show of the NY run. I was there on Friday night and am certainly grateful I did not let the mixed vibe of that show keep me from going back for more.
During the entire first set on Friday night I felt as if I was watching Jackie Green with a fantastic backing band who felt bored backing a “green” kid who was in something way over his head. Everything in that first set felt forced and uneasy and Jackie’s vocals seemed scripted and uninspired. That same dull energy found it’s way into the middle acoustic set making for one of the most forgettable F.O.D.’s one will ever hear. The excitement from the crowd for “Dead Flowers” came across like a giant exhale from an audience that was carrying the weight of a dreadfully plodding show for more than an hour. I was able to work my way down to the front edge of the stage near Jackie for the beginning of the third set. I noticed that Jackie has really taken to the rock star prima donna lifestyle as he has an assistant shadowing him who I watched hold his cigarette between puffs – seemed very odd. Ryan Adams’ arrival turned the show around and did more to highlight the weakness of the earlier set. RA has a natural way to belt out these songs without aping Jerry. His guitar interplay with Larry is much more of a partnership that Jackie & Larry who seemed to just have their solos planned out – not really listening to the other and reacting. I can really “feel” Stella Blue when it is presented with a vocal that comes from the soul. When Wharf Rat is laid out and sung as a story – not a piece of sheet music it takes on that human feel that can so easily be lost. RA brings that to the table. When a band can really find the pocket and groove in it – well there’s the magic – it was tough to find that magic on Friday night…especially when Molitz screws up the words on Eclipse and goes as far as to throw a lost look of desperation out to the rest of the band as if to say, “HELP!” - -that move was amateurish.
I left on Friday buying into a lot of what I’ve read on this board and feeling that maybe the horse Phil has backed this year is nothing more than a tired nag.
Last night my mind was changed.
As the first chords of Bertha laid down the beat for the night, I turned to my friend and said jokingly, “Watch all the posters praise this opener and talk about how it was the intro into one of the best shows of all time!!” Well, I would never go that far as to say this was a “classic” “unforgettable” show – but as far as energy, song choices, solos, vocals – this was a gem.
A Bertha/Deal/Big River powerhouse to open up a show would have to be out of tune and played in cut time for it not juice up any crowd. Treated to an entirely different Jackie who seemed more at ease (and seemed to be enjoying himself more) with this trio of dance songs than he did with the more intricate stylings of Birdsong, DireWolf , Passenger from Friday’s 1st set. Throw in Tom Thumb’s & Night They Drove Old Dixie Down – well that’s just a rocking good time of a first set. One that would be tough to follow… but follow it they did – and big. The unmistakable Keith Richards Brown Sugar riff was the signal that the 2nd set was picking up where the first set ended. Larry is money on this. Solid rock & roll solos, great crowd sing along - strong segue into a serviceable Shakedown. The disappointment here was the lack of young ladies to groove with…..Phil is drawing more and more of a male age 35+ demographic every tour.
Move on to a Revolution 1 and Beat it On Down the Line – just a real good rock and roll show. There was so much energy expounded at that point that you NEEDED a Cryptical Envelopment – it was the right fit at the right time and it was spot on. And to hear Brokedown Palace is always a treat -- great Hunter lyrics -- always gets me, that song -- can always hear Jerry whispering in my mind. This was as great choice at served as a big hug and a thank you for keeping up with us on a night when we really worked it out. The NFA encore – to me – was a mistake as I do not like NFA as a stand alone. Love it married to something else – but to start and end a finale with it – just seemed disjointed.

Looking forward to Friday night hoping this same vibe will carry on throughout the week.

KK, It looks like it was a good show. I'm glad you enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to seeing the Thursday night show with you. It will be our first show together in a number of years, not since the Phil & Friends NYPD-FDNY benefit featuring Bob Weir at the Beacon in December 2001.

All the best,

As well, I have seen all P&F line up's over the years and LOVE this one the best. While some of the other PHRIENDS have been smoking but... the improve and the chemistry here is more then entertaining and they have dropped enough old school tunes in just the right way to keep a 20yr tour vet extremely happy until the next incarnation of "THE DEAD" come round again!!

JGe is the BOMB! He can play & sing Jerry AND bobby tunes with mad style!! Got to chill with him for a few last week and he is so humbled by the experience and stated "They WILL be back AGAIN"!!!

Hold onto your hats folks... Last 4 to go!!!!

What show is that? I have over 22 yrs with the FDNY and in December of 2001 we were all still working at ground zero, never heard of this "benefit" show for us ! Any insight would be appreciated since I would like to know what headquarters did with the tickets !

Katdan,

The December 5, 2005 Phil & Friends featuring Bob Weir was for the "Unbroken Chain Foundation Benefit For New York Relief Efforts". This was not part of the NYPD-FDNY "official" benefit.

Thanks Andrew, that sheds a little more light on it, I remember being offerred tickets for "The concert for New York" at MSG, but turned them down since I was working at the site that night, but I dont remember the Phil and Bob show tickets at all. The fact that it was an unbroken chain benefit makes more sense.

I have several pictures of Phil wearing an NYPD hat that night. It was definitely a post 9/11 NYPD-FDNY benefit show. I didn't see any of my friends who are FDNY-NYPD at the show, but I wasn't really looking either. I don't know how they distributed the tickets to the depts. Some were sold to the general public. I was only able to buy a single SRO ticket from TM. I'm sure some tickets probably went to the brass. H2

It was 12/3/2001; there was a meet and greet before the show. What a zoo that one was, but I managed to get all of the Q to sign the event poster (Bob was NOT at the meet and greet). I recall seeing a bunch of FDNY on the wings of the stage (maybe even gave the donor rap too), but I thought most attendees purchased their tickets. I think the meet and greet got you a great seat, the event poster (which says it was a "UBCF benefit for NYC relief efforts"), some fairly shitty appetizers, and cost like $250 a ticket.

My thanks to the New York crowd last night, who boogied all show long, and gave the band a well-deserved and extended round of applause at the end. Great energy. Good friends. Phil and Friends with Jackie Greene. An awesome combination. And the sound in the Nokia is the bomb. Those sub-sonic notes Phil was continually hitting in the second set and shaking our bones had us laughing our asses off. A shorter show than Monday, but a great two show gig for me coming in from Colorado, and a nice spacey/rockin' breakup of nights. I can't wait until the spring tour!

why did phil sing "going back to San Antonio" instead of new york city in the tom thumb's blues?

<<why>>

Phil did not sing "San Antonio." As he has done with this great Dylan song since he started covering it back in 1985, Phil crooned, "I'm going back to San Anselmo..." (a beautiful town in Marin County not too far north of the Golden Gate Bridge)

yeah, jgr on vocals...great 'death dont',nice and slow, crowd mellowed a little, but too loud of a crowd as always in nyc...but i kept thinking this guy is too young to really pull it off, he is weird looking too, but i was high... but the song itself was great, phil droped mini bombs and really animatedly directed all...but as said earlier, no real guitar solos...say what u want about trey, he really solos well. or sless for that matter, larry and jgr seem to laid back...great purple lights too...

oh man, where to begin???

This was my last of 4 shows this tour-I made it to Atlanta, Saturday night, and Monday night as well. The show was amazing, and they've come a long way since Atlanta. Tuesday night just wasn't as spectacular as the other two NYC shows I saw. Sure, they played great....I just would have liked one or two more songs. Both sets were extremely short, and they started the encore at 11:31 by the stage clock....I was expecting a monster....Terrapin or H>S>F or SOMETHING with some meat. The NFA was ok, but I'm a greedy bastard and wanted more.

Anyway, I got in line at 4pm to get down front for this one. Set up next to Blackie and his son right in front of Larry Campbell. Very nice meeting Blackie-he's a good guy and he's raised one hell of a young man. Show starts off with a Bertha. I knew that one of the three shows I saw was going to have a Bertha opener. After bumping into an ex-girlfriend after Monday night's monster, I was convinced Bertha would get things started-and she did. RAGING version that had us all bouncing and beaming. Jackie singing ith sould and everyone on their knees....(which is how we would end the show with NFA, but I digress) The Deal that followed was rockin. The jam that erupted out of it was intense. Big River continued the theme started with Bertha and had some scorching guitar work from Larry, of course. Gone Wanderin was catchy and a nice way to calm things down a little bit. The tom thumb was nice, but I really felt this was where the 1st set started to lose its steam. Dixie dragged, but it reminded me of my time in the south, so I enjoyed it. Cosmic Charlie was an alright way to end the set, but it wasn't too powerful. It did get a good response with Phil's silly ways of singing the lyrics.

Second set was nice....everyone liked the Brown Sugar even though I found it somewhat lacking. ooops, gotta go pick someone up. second set review later....
