anyone have a pair for sale for sunday?
thanx!
Ryan Adams will be in the UK, Warren will be traveling between the West Coast and Idaho, Scofield will be in Spain... Sunday night will be a monster show no matter what, tons of energy, sick setlist, Phil playing it just a little bit longer so he doesn't have to end this amazing run... But I have a good feeling another one of Phil's Phriends will join him on stage. The question: WHO???

>>regarding "my dads taking me to see my first phil concert i'm so exited its gunna be awsome"<<
I took my whole family, including my 85 year old grandpa to P&F w/Herring & Haynes & Barraco and they loved it. My grandpa is 6' 3'' and we had floor seats so his white head was above most others. During the first tune he looked at the pipes lighting up and said "don't they know that stuff is illegal?". During the second tune he had some second hand and was grinning and bopping up & down a little.
Keepin' it the family... and sharing the love.
Looks like a whole bunch of Jerry tunes tonight- my fav!

Phil is working his ass off to make folks happy.
Would it be too harsh of me to wish Trey house arrest in Pakistan. Tonight is about Phil and the intelligent choices he made to please us (both in band members as well as setlists).
im with u that its phils night, but thats to harsh, we need some trey in the near future
who sang morning dew?
Think about the kid earlier tonight who excitedly posted that his dad was taking him. Hope he's having an earth moving time.

wow
Someone posted on chat that tickets were tough last night.
I am glad I went last Fri. since I couldn't make this show....a lot of the same songs, makes me feel better about having to work tonight! Hope everyone there is having a blast
Who sings Dew?
I just hope all this toasting and balloon dropping is not about this being a final Phil eastern tour..since I could not make any of these my last was Asheville last summer.
Thanks for the commentary from the hall and setlist edits guys. It's appreciated.
>>>Who sings Dew?
i think i read somewhere that phil did
i was there last night. it was tough. I couldn't get one for the life of me. I was there thurs., got a miracle used the smoking stamp to get in on friday, then sat i wanted to use the smoking stamp again, but they said they weren't giving out stamps yet. busted bummer... i could imagine tonight was impossible. I feel the love of that place from here.

THANKS FOR THE UPDATES ZWGMAN!!!
zwgman, thanks so much for your reports!! Much appreciated.
Box, great minds think alike.....
...or fools seldom differ
This is not Phil's last tour or Eastern tour for that matter. He said in an interview recently that this band will be together for a year at least. He had been a little frustrated with guests not being able to commit to a fair amount of time, so whoever he put together could only get so cohesive. I'm sure this means more touring. In another interview he was asked about retirement and he said he doesn't know the meaning of the word. That is good for us! Glad some lucky people got to hear the Dew I wanted on Monday or Tuesday. What a nice way to end the tour.
lol robin...i think the latter seems more likely!
Thanks for that reassuring news/views
It makes sense when you see just how much playing for us means to Phil and how much he enjoys it still.
Also thanks to spunge and davec as well...and box for helping a tired gal out and showing her how it's done yet again
To the guy that was worried the balloon drop signified the end of all. If you'll recall at the beginning of the tour, Phil agreed to tour with these guys because they were all willing to make a one year commitment to the band. This is just the beautiful intro...
When did the balloons drop?
May God bless Phil with many more healthy and beautiful days.
I do believe that Phil deeply views every single day as a gift, having survived a liver transplant and prostrate cancer.
Frankly, we should all view every day as a gift as well, but we tend to take them for granted.
I am deeply grateful to Phil for keeping the torch burning and reminding us of the simple, but beautiful truth that it really is great to be alive and even greater to share those feelings with those we love.
See you all down the road.

Wow, I can't believe I'm the first with this.
For the Acoustic Set, Phil wore a suit that had a bunch of large round objects (looked like sew on patches) All I could make out was one that looked like a mushroom, one that looked kind of like a wizard and a crescent moon. In addition, the pants and sleeves of the jacket were sequined. Not overdone like Liberace but he was tastefully glinting in the lights.
The toast was apparently from the Nokia folks. When we entered we were given a little slip of paper that had information about a toast being given by a preselected member of the audience at the beginning of the third set (so they knew ahead of time there would be a third set) and that we should all get drinks and be ready. They further stated that water and sparkling cider would be free at the bar but I didn't go check that our.
What an absolutely wonderful close to an amazing run. I'm sorry that its over but so happy that I got to go to a bunch.
Much Love.
Just got back... Mindbending show tonight. Acoustic was amazing (Attics!!! Till The Morning Comes!!!!), and yes! Phil wore a PSYCHEDELIC NUDIE SUIT during the set, just like Gram Parsons and the Burritos- but the third set blew the roof of off the place. The Cumberland > UJB > Cryptical > Dark Star > DEW!!! > Rider > Other One > Dark Star > Sugar Mag was every bit as nasty, epic and intense as you would want it to be. Jackie Fucking Greene KILLED it tonight. Seriously, that kid went up to a level I didn't know he could reach with his playing and singing. He was so in the moment and the notes were just flying out of his fingers. He KILLED it on the Hammond tonight and sang the fuck out of BEW, Sugaree and Sugar Mag. Phil was in top form as well, and his vocals on the DEW!!! and the Unbroken Chain were out of this solar system. The Rider was simply transcendent and powerful, like a watching a massive avalanche roll down a mountain, but the highlight of the show was the DEW!!! and the Other One. Oh, and I cried real tears during Brokedown. I saw six shows on this run, including both Ryan Adams nights and this was EASILY the best show of the run. I heard two dudes on the way out saying they hadn't seen a show like that since 1978. Dunno about that, but no true Head that was in that room tonight will soon forget that show. It's up there with the greats. Phil was clearly overcome with pride and emotion at the end, and the crowd never stopped cheering from Sugar Mag to Unbroken to Brokedown. A truly amazing end to a truly amazing run. Beyond!
thanks phil jackie john larry steve holy shit
Now I remember why I always see multiple shows on a run...
To catch a show like this one: 11/11/07!
We did get word about the 3 piece set 2 suit
Or was it a 2 piece set 3 suit.??
Congrats all
I had anticipated for the final night a special guest but that ws not in the cards. On vocal for the acoustic set was a lovely woman. Am not sure who she was but I was told it could be Larry cambells wife? Very nice vocals indeed.
This show was the one for the ages from this band. They reached so deep down you could see conviction in there eyes from the moment they set foot on stage. The acoustic set was so inspiring the crowd sang to almost every tune.
Set three cranked. There was this 'take no prisoners' attitude and it reflected in there playing. Each version of each song was perhaps one of the best done of the shows I had seen. Simply put this show left the band and the phans exhausted and fulfilled.
I won't try to review the sets but will mention that there were a couple of bombs towards the end where Phil started getting the bass to feedback big time and then somehow there were two about a minute apart where the sound or not sound exactly but an actual wind came from behind and made by hair blow out/stand on end literally. The back of my head. I thought I was imagining it at first, but I asked the guy behind if he'd felt it too and he had.
Oh and the Morning Dew was amazing and Phil sang it.
These last two shows were incredible. I wouldn't want to have to decide which one was better, last nights or tonights. They both told different stories.
I see upthread this >>>heard two dudes on the way out saying they hadn't seen a show like that since 1978.<<<
I agree. I thought the show last night as well as tonights were the best things I've heard since 1978. Also last night, I was talking to an even older head who thought it was the best stuff he'd heard since 1970.
Yes does anyone really know what was on phil's jacket and any reason for it? it was covered with sparkles and the "patch on the front right pocket looked like a crescent moon with a cat ( sitting- not like "Under the stars" or anything)) and at leas one other patch either on the sleeve or upper chest.
show was great - in fact the last two nights - while certainly not the best shows I have ever seen- had unreal energy levels. don't get me wrong, the playing was fantastic. but like i said the energy from ( i think) both the band and the audience was off the charts- all the band members seemed to really be having a good time.
thanks phil
Absolutely Beautiful Show
Rocked it to the Ground
the suite phil wore is the original suite that dead had done by a designer named nudie around 1970 he only wore it a few times on stage and just got it back.
Damn! There's the Other One I had been hoping for...
...kudos to the band, a great showing here in NYC.
Dr. B
There is a famous shot of Jerry wearing the Nudie Suit from the 70's by Roberto Rabanne - Jimi Hendrix's Photog (He also shot Jimi in the NUDIE Suit & the Old and in the Way jam shot amongst others). Wonder if it was Jerry's...? So many nod's of the head, tip of the hat to the big JG this run... lyrics purposely not sung by anyone, instrumental Stella... THE DEW!! WOW! What a frigg'n tour. Caught a dozen or so shows and something is up with this specific incarnation of P&F for sure. Not just the band but the heads on this tour have indefinably revived the vibe. Very nostalgic feelings along the road this go around. Lots of old school & middle school heads appearing outta the wood work, good times, new adventures, same old favorite tunes just kicked up with Jackie Green & Larry Campbell Magic ! It would be great if Jackie could join "The Boys" when they come back round again!!!!!!!
PS: john (Paperposter) Got anymore info on the Nudie Suit??
This was a huge magnamanous run that could only happen in NYC. Last nite was magic. American Beauty magic.
Thank you Phil. Thank you Jackie. Thank you Larry, Steve and John. Red Rocks, Santa Fe are but distant memories to where this band has come and gone...
No need for Trey, Scofield or anyone else last nite. I mean why bother with the 'circle jerk'???? Let's be "here and now"...this moment. Not, what or who may show up.
It's Phil and his love of the music that is the vortex. Searchin for the Sound is alive and well. He surrounded himself with all that he needed with this current ensemble. This band cooked. Anything else (by the Phish set etc) are nothing more than sophomoric ramblings.
...let their be songs to fill the air.
Thanks again Phil.
>>>Lots of old school & middle school heads appearing outta the wood work<<<
I'm one of them.
Speaking for myself and maybe for some of the others there's a reason for that.
The scene looks to have changed back to the kind of vibe I remember from the 70s and early 80s. The only shades to any large extent of the type of sketchiness I saw in the late 80s and 90s were on the first couple of nights of this NYC run. It seemed to disappear once things went into the meat of the run.
Of course, this is only my personal perception.
I spent quite a bit of time hanging around before and after the shows every night I was there (6 nights) and talked to a lot of people (also during the shows) in forming this impression.
There did seem to be a lot more older heads out for this run than I remember at the Beacon/Hammerstein gigs.
Plus, the music is just On. That brings us older heads out when we catch wind of it.
They played every note & sang every word with the deepest, most heartfelt love & conviction.
It was psychedelic, tender, sweet, mindbendling, heartattack, raging balls to the walls pure fucking MAGIC.
Last night was all about the LOVE.
Unfuckingbelievable.
It was a thing of pure beauty.
Walking out MikeW called it a Masterpiece. It was. THANK YOU PHIL, JACKIE, JOHN, STEVE, & LARRY.
I LOVE YOU MORE THAN WORDS CAN TELL....LISTEN TO THE RIVER SING SWEET SONGS TO ROCK MY SOUL.
*tears*
oh yeah.
Phil sang MORNING DEW. Pretty much says it all.
I can't wait to hear this one!
As for the vibe, etc. I have said it before, and I will say it again. This band has the talent and humbleness to let the music play this band and the phans. No dis to any guests, but Phil wants this band to play together for a bit(thus the one year commitment) so they can grow this sound!!!!!!
I can't believe how great this is! I think we may get a great studio album out of this with songs written by Jackie, Phil et al.
Also, Phil needs to buy a clu and play there regularly!!
I flew in and bought my old friends tickets to these shows because I wanted them to see that Phil is still keeping the music fresh and sounding fantastic. Especially with THIS band, and most definitely because of Jackie, there was an energy that has been there with all of Phil's friends, but at an even higher level. Phil himself seemed to be like a kid again, instead of a musical icon playing with other great musicians.
As of of the old heads also, I agree with NC even though I personally have been seeing all of Phil's shows, but I'm just a freak. I can remember when there was no 'scene', and when you didn't get into a show, you just went home because you had to go work the next day. At least that was my friends and my experience growing up in NYC. And that includes travelling up and down the East Coast - we didn't travel unless we had tickets. IT WAS ALWAYS ABOUT THE MUSIC, and if we couldn't get in, we looked forward to next time. And when the scene started it brought along with it the attendant hangers-on and skels that turned some of us off. It didn't help that the GD themselves were in a funk, although I never went to a show and regretted it.
Someone mentioned the Rainforest Benefit show back in '91? that they hated. Even with Hall and Oates out there,it was still awesome to see the 'boys' doing something different and fresh. And to see one of my musical heroes, Jack Casady, up there with Phil,Jerry and Bob was worth the price of admission itself. So even funky times had some real gems that shone out.
After Tuesday's show, and I had been telling my bud's about this band before I got in, they turned to me during the show and said, "Man, this is what rock and roll is supposed to be", and my friend Amy still goes to tons of shows in the city, most recently the Hendrix tribute at the Beacon. So she knows of where she speaks.
It made me feel SO GOOD to turn them back on to what we first experienced with the GD.
...And I completely agree with you Richard about this band. I liked seeing Ryan Adams on Monday, but I was a little bummed when he came out, because I knew it meant that the focus would change. And while he does bring so much to the table, I also agree with previous posters that the sweet, almost tingly sound of the group, turned into a wall of sound. Not as much nuance and plinking around at times. Anyway, it's all great to see and I look forward to more of it soon!
Rain Forest gig was fall '88. Bizarre gig in a lot of ways, no flow ever got established due to the comings and goings of the various guests, but it was a lot of fun, especially if you went to the after party. Susan Vega was great.
I went to almost 250 shows between 1973 and 1995 and I never went without a ticket.
Don't think anyone above pointed it out, but just before the toast, Phil's cew was passing out cups of Champagne to the audience. Lots of bottles were coming out from backstage.
Great run. Sad day today knowing it's over, but hopefully not for long. Still, nothin' left to do but smile, smile, smile...
interesting to note that both porter wagoner and hank thompson were both major nudie suit collectors and wearers (each had more than 40 suits, I think, and they weren't cheap) and passed away during phil's tour...
i was at the show last night and thursday and just wanted to add that whereas i thought thursday jackie really stepped forward and led with his playing and singing and leadership and was quite excellent and enjoyable while doing it ..last night i felt larry stepped up and was a highlight with his vocals and his playing...he played as good as any lead phil and friends have had..last night he was slamming fast and precise and totally awesome. i think this band as a whole definitely feed off each others energy and all are all excellent musicians...molo is awesome too he wa sinsane during other one pounding the skins.....all in all was two great shows i saw ...and the band never stopped smiling at each other ...definitely in sync
Did anybody else notice that they skipped the verse in cumberland that starts with "lot of poor man make a 5 dollar bill"......or was I just too high to remember it?
The History of "Nudie"
~Jamie Nudie~
He was born in Kiev, Russia in 1902. He decided he would become a tailor, and became a good one at that. He was the first man to put Rhinestones on clothing. It all began in the early 1930's.
While traveling cross country he came upon a boarding house in Mankato, Minnesota. There he not only received room and board but found his future bride Bobbie as well. During their stay in Minnesota they had their only daughter Barbara. They left Mankato to travel in New York where they spent most of their time. That story is one in itself!.
He started off making G-Strings for show girls working his way to become The Rhinestone Cowboy!!
Nudie and Bobbie, came to California in the early 1940's and started making clothes out of their garage. Spade Cooley, Cliffie Stone, Lefty Frizzell, Tex Williams and his band, gave him a chance that set him well on his way. Nudie and Bobbie decided that before they would talk to any others they needed to set up a shop. So off they went, with the help of their friends, to the corner of Victory and Vineland in North Hollywood, CA.
They first approached Roy Rogers and Dale Evans in the early 1950's and eventually became their custom tailors suiting them for every appearance, becoming their personal friends.
In 1957, Nudie made a $10,000 gold lame' suit for Elvis Presley, which became a very famous item.
Colonel Parker, Elvis' manager, became a very close friend of Nudies where they spent many afternoon doing lunch, shooting the breeze.
In 1963, they moved to the location on Lankershim Blvd. There Nudie continued to clothe everybody who was anybody... John Wayne, Gene Autry, Cher, John Lennon, Ronald Reagan, Elton John, Robert Mitchum, Pat Buttram, Tony Curtis, Michael Landon, Glenn Campbell, Hank Snow, Hank Williams Sr.,and groups such as, America, Chicago, ZZ top, and the Flying Burrito Bros where Gram Parsons wore the well known Marijuana leaves suit.
Nudie had a style of his own. He strutted around town in Rhinestone suits and unmatched boots to commemorate his humble beginnings, so as to not forget that at one time, he could not even afford a matching pair of shoes. Quite a man I'd say!
To add to his flashy style Nudie created a fleet of 18, silver studded, gun toting, cattle stampeding automobiles. Distributed throughout the nation, Nudie left one behind, the 1975 Cadillac El Dorado, for his bride Bobbie to ride off into the sunset.
In 1975, Nudie and some of his closest friends, put together his famous album entitled "Nudie and his mandolin".
But in 1984, Nudie died at the age of 81. Dale Evans was there to give the Eulogy. Everyone he had ever clothed was there to pay their respects to his wife Bobbie, Daughter, grandchildren, and family. After Nudies' death, Bobbie was determined to continue the tradition, and succeeded with pride and joy.
In 1989, their one and only daughter Barbara, died of cancer, at the young age of 52. But again, she went on with the help of myself Jamie.
Bobbie and myself have run the store by ourselves for the past ten years. Now at the age of 81, Bobbie has decided to close the doors to spend some time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. I think it's time. We realize the public is sad, but the name Nudie will live forever. Memorabilia of Nudies will always be around for everyone to enjoy. So every time you see a Rhinestones suit with a Nudie label, remember... it's part of history. And whoever is wearing a Nudie original is very fortunate. So hold on to it and pass it down to every generation.
We, the Nudie family, take great pride in having been able to give the world a piece of our artistry, as well as our hearts!!! We thank you, our loyal customers and devoted friends, for making us a part of history.
Best Regards,
~Jamie Nudie~
the band had them all custom made by nudie probaly 1970 wore them on stage i think 2 or 3 times.

they all had nudie suits. i'll never forget that enhanced psychedelia of seeing rays of light emanating from their bodies...
here is a picture of Phil with his Nudie suit. FEB 73.

OK....guess I was having too much fun!

Hey Chris O
regarding your talk about the scene years ago - I totally agree. In the late 70s, it was totally different, with no outdoor scene
I remember going to a show in Providence (May 1978, i think) - we had tickets for upper balcony, but I went up the box office and asked if they had anything better - We got like 10th row off to the side of the band, which were probably guest list tickets or VIP tickets that didnt get used.
But then, I couldn't sell the other tickets - there wasnt anyone who needed tickets - my friends went inside while I stood out there trying to sell four tickets to get inside - nothing - there wasnt anyone around who didnt already have a ticket.
So I peeled a notice off of a lighting pole near the entrance to the show and TAPED FOUR TICKETS to the pole there - and then just walked in. I have always wondered if the karmic hand somehow arranged for someone to see their first show using those tickets.
Might be hard for the younger heads to believe, but that's what the scene was like in the 70s.
wasn't there a sunshine daydream at the end of set 3?
They played every note & sang every word with the deepest, most heartfelt love & conviction.
It was psychedelic, tender, sweet, mindbendling, heartattack, raging balls to the walls pure fucking MAGIC.
Last night was all about the LOVE.

Couldn't have said it better myself Trollett
>>In the late 70s, it was totally different, with no outdoor scene <<
I remember around the same time (78 or maybe 79) in Kansas City a show being sold out but then going there a couple of hours beforehand and buying a second row seat.
The Dead used to do that as standard practice -- release tickets the afternoon of the show, that's the reason I checked that day.
im glad they did dark star instrumentally...i was at 11/5-6 only, loved both shows, but the DS vocals with ryan mon. night were hard to digest, overall he was great, (listen to them)..i kept thinking how much beter it would be if it was done intrumentally...cool move phil
Wow. What can you say about a show that included an acoustic Attics, Ripple, Peggy-O, Cumberland, Morning Dew, The Other One and Unbroken Chain... except -- BRAVO!!
I saw three shows at the Nokia and only got two or three repeats and one of them was Cryptical>Other One so I got very lucky.
It really feels stupid to criticize such a special show. It's hard to think that it could have been better. Yeah, the first set seemed to lose a little steam during Bird Song>Sugaree, the Attics and Til The Morning Comes felt unrehearsed and slightly rough, the Cumberland wasn't as tight as others I've seen and maybe, just maybe there were moments in the second set where they could have used a little guitar from a rumoured special guset to put it over the top. So enough of the negative and on to why we all go to these shows.
First set started early and blazing and crisp with Golden Road. Chest Fever is a good choice for this band. Has some room to jam and sounds fresh almost 40 years later. Then there was a very nice jam into Brown Eyed Women a version that had good energy and was fun to hear Phil sing the "looks like the old man's gettin' on" bit. I loved what jackie added vocally to Sugaree. He brought the song to a climax in his own was without imitating jerry. Very nice.
Acoustic set was just so sweet. So cool to see Attics with Phil singing and playing stand-up. Nice surprise and very cool to 'Til the morning Comes. Hey why not play every song from American Beauty?? (they almost did)...Deep Elum Blues is one of the songs that got me into The Grateful Dead in the first place and I don't think I'd seen a live version since 1982 so this was a big treat and Larry's guitar work was stellar and his singing very strong. The Ripple. Oh man how nice that was. Just played beautifully. That was probably the highlight for me.
Then a nice touch: NA ZDRAVI PHIL!!!!!!!!
I heard the opening notes of Peggy-O and called it early. GREAT CHOICE for that moment. Kind of set the bar for a fairly mellow second set but didn't care (everything from now on was gravy for me) it sounded sweet and Teresa Anderson was a nice touch to a great song. We needed Cumberland and Phil delivered. Different from last tour but great as always. Uncle John's Band? Cool. Wouldn't be a Phil run without hearing at least one so Yay!. I thought dark Star was more teased than played but it was unmistakeable. MORNING DEW!! Keith called it two weeks ago but when it finally came it was just great. THANK YOU PHIL!!! Smoking jam into smoking Rider perhaps the best jamming of the the night. Other One? Wow. Great. Sugar Magnolia. Fuck yeah.
Encores: Stellar. Unbroken Chain. The exact right song to cap it. Brokedown Palace and good night. See you soon Phil I hope. You do indeed make people happy. NA ZDRAVI!!!!
Last night was one of the most memorable experiences I've had in a long, long time. I sucked it up and decided to stand for a show....was 10 feet from the stage in the swirling mass of crazies. It was just beyond awesome. And the music was just so deeply felt by the crowd...I haven't felt this group musical consciousness in over 15 years. A very special night that will never be forgotten.
Thanks to Phil and the band. They have it and they KNOW it.
Now I just pray every night for a Spring Tour.
>>> "Now I just pray every night for a Spring Tour."
Me too, although my prayer starts with good health for Phil.
Long live Phil.
Kudos to you both NC and Grubby as well. Who could have imagined that we would be as ecstatic 30!!! years later going to shows, not only because of the memory of what was, but because of what IS today! I was re-reading the reviews from Halloween, especially TK's which made me laugh my ass off and he's right on the mark. So much skepticism from my fellow jaded New Yorkers. But, as is demanded many times in the city, the band hit a ton of grand slams and silenced the Doubting Thomases (sorry for the Catholic school reference!). So much fun, so much love, so much absolutely incredible f'n music. Wow.
Outrageously beautiful and lush and powerful and emotional. Thanks so much! What a way to celebrate the 22d anniversary of my very first show!
>>>wasn't there a sunshine daydream at the end of set 3?
i believe so (i wasnt there, but it was mentioned). but SSDD isnt a separate song. it ususally is only noted when sugar mag and ssdd are split up, with other songs in between.
cant wait to hear this show!
Great show. I saw the last three of the run, and two prior to that, Its tough to say which was the best cause they all had their moments, but last night was special. Attics, Till the morning, Ripple, Peggy-O, Candyman, Brokedown, all of these were played flawlessly, effortlessly, and with soul wrenching emotion. Just amazing to see. So many other highlights too, Cumberland was off the charts but when Phil dropped into the other one after the peak of rider I lost it, really sealed the deal on an incredible night of music. Thanks for the run, just wish it was still going on
>>>I was re-reading the reviews from Halloween, especially TK's which made me laugh my ass off and he's right on the mark.<<<
I'd missed that post and just went and took a look at it & I'm laughing my ass off at this moment.
I'm usually a bit more polite than that myself, but I can't say I disagree with it one bit. Someone had to say it.
>>>> "Who could have imagined that we would be as ecstatic 30!!! years later going to shows, not only because of the memory of what was, but because of what IS today! "
Hey Chris, that sums it up exactly. Last Saturday, my buddy Steve was with me and he saw the dead in 1969 at a show where they did the complete Live/Dead suite - DS/Stephen/11/Lovelight - before the album had come out.
And when he saw that saturday show (11/3) with the Stephen/11/Lovelight run, that's what he said - it wasnt a nostalga trip, it was fresh and new, but because it connected him all the way back with his first show, it was powerfully emotional.
I like the description "..not only because of the memory of what is was, but because of what it IS today!"
might be a good inscription for a T-shirt
grubby
Hey Grubby,
When you just described your friend Steve in made me think of two guys I met the other night at the friday show - first row of seatson the Jackie side - they were both named Steve - one looked just like Jerry - he walked with a cane and was just the nicest guy and his friend was named Steve too - he had a gray pony tail and was wearing a tie with guitars on it - I think he had seen the whole run - I chatted with them a bit - they were the nicest guys and had such a good vibe. I was just wondering if they happened to be your buddy you were referring to.
Neil
Hey now - I was at the last night's show - I scanned the flyer from the Nokia Theater telling people about the surprise toast before the third set.
Check out the flyer here (scroll down):

hi neil
no, that wasnt my friend steve, but my buddy is a super nice guy with a good vibe, so there's some kind of overlap there
grubby
Me too, although my prayer starts with good health for Phil.
Long live Phil.>>>>>>>>
That's a given......always sending good health vibes to Phil.
Nice chatting with you all during this tour. I'm new to it, so it's been fun sharing old memories and new shows with a great group of fellow PHANS. See you next tour!
A special thanks out to John Molo. Thanks for slappin our faces and kickin our blues away....love ya!
right on, Spring Tour. i don't care who plays with Phil, as long he's healthy and thumping that bass. God bless ya, Phil! Thank you.
I'm 38 years old and I started seeing the Dead in 1987- about 15 shows altogether- then Ratdog, Weir/Wasserman,Further Festivals,Other Ones,Mickey Hart, The Dead- altogether maybe 50 shows-the number is not that important- also DSO, Illuminati Big Band (Joe Gallant- he's amazing and strangely enough a pornographer as you all may know.) I've seen P&F maybe 6-7 times and i must say that every show I have attended has been exceptional- you walk out in another fucking world on the best nights-and you feel different, renewed, more alive, more alert- even though you're high as a kite on the music and all the weed you've smoked and inhaled from the crowd>
Anyway, as many other Heads probably are also- I am a HUGE music fan and I listen to ALOT of jazz Mingus,Miles,Eric Dolphy,Coltrane,Max Roach,Duke Ellington all the fusion stuff- Jaco,Mclaughlin-etc. etc but also all modern "alternative" stuff- I have a subscription to Spin for God's sake- and I'm a huge jungle/drumnbass head. Also Steve Reich, Terry Riley,- all and any avant-garde music- I could just keep listing musicians- I listen to music all the time.
The show on Sun. was fantastic- These guys are such high level musicians and they live to play music- I truly believe that if you really love music you can't really not enjoy ANY of these shows at least on some level. Its good that people listen with a critical ear and have intelligent things to say but ultimately alot of what people write in these posts seems really trivial and to me, besides the point of what a great thing this music is. It really is an inspiration and we are blessed to have this type of thing that we do feel is our own. You do feel so much a part of it as with any community- It is a cliche with Heads about this idea and it gets a little corny at times and I think its also quite disengenuous at other times. I must say, I got so much hostility from so many people in the crowd at this show that it really made me angry. I was pushed, cursed at, cutoff in line and responded to with such negativity from people that i was just like WOW>
On the other hand- and this is the point- Dig this. I was sitting to the side of the stage- I had been talking to the securityy guard before the show and he had asked me to purchase him some drinks because he was working and we were talking throughout and with all the people around. Wonderful, kind people- LOVING every minute. Joy. I friggin smoked with the security guard cat. It was so cool. He loved the music and was pretty unfamiliar with the Dead. So in the end, the negativity and hostility was really just a minor annoyance because it was balanced out by so much positivity. Also, to be truly understanding and compassionate I think its important to get past being personally insulted by negative people, But getting pushed and cursed at and shit- Come on.
Anyway, I would love to see Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth sit in on a 2nd set- Lee's quoted in the Garcia book as going to alot of Dead and Jerry shows- I wonder if they could work their tuning system with the band. If they could get some of the guys from the Mingus Big Band to sit in that would be extremely hip too. I know Phil is a huge Mingus fan- Anyone who has not seen the Mingus Big Band- You must go-they will blow your mind- I've seen them countless times and they never fail to.
Sufjan Stevens might have an interesting time playing with this band too- and pretty much any of the freak-folk cats (Devendra Banhart, Espers,et. al)
Anyway, this is a great forum and really- Imagine- Phil is fucking 67 years old. So yeah, he's gonna have some bad nights- but goddamn- They ripped the roof off last night- It was a great experience and I look forward to more. Thanks Phil, Larry, Jackie
John and Steve for a wonderful experience. Your music is a great gift to the people
holy shit
I missed this???????????????????????
*tears*
i am 32 years old and was never a dead head. i do own one cd though . .infrared roses. a friend of mine who is 20 years my senior and a devout fan of "the boys" went to last friday and last saturday nights' shows and told me how electric and great the music was. the smile he had while telling me about his experience filled me with curiosity and when he told me he had an extra ticket to sunday night's show and offered it to me i instantly said yes. not knowing what to expect i entered the nokia theater with an open mind full of excitement and wonder. i listened to the fans around me talking about past shows and certainly picked up on the buzz that was quickily filling up the room. and then they came on stage.
the first set absolutely blew me away. the energy was great and the sound system was fantastic. during the show, my friend would tell me how lucky i was to be present for the songs they played. i was amazed at the talents of green and campbell and molo on the drums, and of course, phil. while watching him pound on the bass and listening to the amazing music coming from the stage, i definitely knew i was somewhere special watching a living legend. being naive, i was just simply enjoying this new sound entering my system.
the acoustic set that followed was a nice break from the pounding of electic guitars and thumping drums and loud riffs but in no way was less entertaining. the crowd helped me in their excitement as each song blended to the next. again, my friend would tell me that i was listening to some really precious gems and as the crowd swayed and spun and sang each word i was really glad that i said yes to the ticket. when the second set ended phil warned us about what was to come next and that "we won't regret it." he certainly lived up to his promise.
the third set was even more amazing than the previous two. knowing that the show and the tour were coming to a close, the band dug down deep and just let loose an energy i have never felt before. morning dew seemed to last forever and having never heard it before i didn't want it to stop. they also played the one song i did know from the dead, sugar magnolia. it took my breath away (as well as the lingering aroma which i also enjoyed). i was upset when they came back out for the encore because i was coming to the realization that the show was about to end. four hours seemed to just disappear in a stew of sounds that tasted so sweet that i wanted more of something that i couldn't have.
all in all, i thought the show was fantastic. my friend even said it was one of the finest shows he has ever seen and said if i was to ever see a show, this was the one. i couldn't stop thanking him and i thank all of you who took the time to read my account of this show. god bless phil and friends and hopefully they will be back.
good for you. you did pick quite a show to be your first. hopefully not your last.
welcome aboard!
Setlist updaters and reviewers...
Thanks again for your efforts ...
Yes, thanks to all who were there and reported back on this one!
I assume it was taped, will someone post a link here if it gets put up (in pieces) at archive.org?
I can't do bitorrent, have to download song by song, and I was downloading the 11/5 first set from there and discovered it was not tracked for cd length and comes in at 82 minutes. So I have not burned it as yet.
I hope Phil comes East again this spring and again includes Asheville on his tour, as he did last summer and seemed to really like the town.
They played six of the ten songs off of American Beauty on Sunday (almost all of side 2).
They played all of the songs from the album except Truckin' on this tour.
They'll probably break that out at the Warfield
Yeah, the cool thing about Sunday's show is that the setlist all had songs that could have been played at a 1970/71/72 show.
Only Unbroken Chain doesnt fit that mold, but as phil's signature tune, it makes for a great encore.
Yeah, if that's the "newest" tune they play, I'll take it everytime!
Hey New York and East Coast.
I am glad you liked this format of P&F. Songs mixed with Jams. The all jam format was fun,but this has better balance and more flavor.
No more skpectics. The band, like the crowds, has been very happy. Great to hear you a wonderful times. Campbell/Greene combo to be remembered.
Next stop. Another good olde Warfield show.

Yupper, Mountain Jim. I know that the McCue aud will eventually be upped on the Archive, though I'm really interested in the guy from Reading PA who recorded with the Sensheiser 441's right next to us. That's the 'bad boy' I'm looking for.

MOUNTAIN JIM. Hang in there my friend. I CAN ONLY PRESUME THAT YOUR CURRENT 82 minute DILEMMA AND WRESTLING WITH REALITY IS A REFERENCE TO THE MC CUE RECORDING OF 11/5? Check out any of the etree uploads to see where the disc splits are. There's no getting around the Nokia being a 3 disc show with one going 4 (I believe)
By the way, that 11/5 up on Archives is off of an 'analog' source (McCue) and none too shabby either. ;^ )
Patience my friend. If you care to email me (with addy), I'll make it a point to get you a copy off of his 11/11 master.
See, I've got a real warm spot for the Ashville area. Would love to reloc down there for retirement. Just grow native American Azaleas, smoke de best Northern Calli Humboldt, and
dance in the garden with the band playing on.......
Not asking for too much....
does ANYONE have any good pictures of the balloon drop? (especially any ones from the balcony area looking down on the drop would be key?!)my camera really assed out on me during that whole part and i really feel that my picture collage of all the nights would NOT be complete without any pics of that awesome moment!.. if you do.. please get back to me!
anyone know why they arent selling sbd's from the nokia run? i found a torrent off of etree but I was suprised they had the rest of the fall tour shows available... except for the nokia run.
Re. the mysterious missing Nokia SBDs......
I was wondering the same thing.....Where the f*ck are they?....especially given how phenomenal these shows were, and how thirsty we all are to hear the ones we couldn't attend or relive the ones we did.
A good friend of mine is friends with someone involved in the handling & processing of files for Phil's downloads. Apparently Nokia management is holding up the release of the board recordings for this run, and demanding that Phil's organization play big fees before they'll turn 'em over. Dunno much about the legalities of ownership on live concert recording, but I'm told that Phil's team is actively negotiating w/ Nokia to get the files so they can post 'em. I guess we're just gonna have to wait. (Patience is a virtue, so we are told!!!)
it's a union thing... in order to record and release a NYC performance you have to pay large union fees..
same thing for NYC Ratdog shows..
Still cant believe I saw Phil in his Nudie suit!!!How cool is that!
it was outrageously cool that Phil still has his boyish figure too
yeah it was a night to behold for sure, one I will never forget.
I definetely dont have a problem with waiting for them... leave it to NYC to charge for something like that... $8 can of bud, overcharging Phil to get the music he made.
And hell yes it was cool to see him in his Nudie suit... any ideas on what prompted him to whip that out of the closet?

Thanks Eephour. The source I partially downloaded was (seen from a link at phishhook) from here:
http://www.archive.org/details/paf2007-11-05.paf20 07-11-05aud.flac16
adam crandall was the name..
The first set is 82 minutes which I don't think will fit, yet the etree info:
http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=510830
also says all of the first set is on cd1.
This does not sound like the source you are referring to, and I am willing to punt this effort and download the best sounding source (assuming it's available in pieces at archive.org).
I appreciate your offer to make me a copy of 11/11 but I am happy just to save you the trouble and download and burn from flacs if it gets put up at archive.org. I would like your help in determining the best sounding source - I am good friends with Doug and Jim Oade for over 35 years so I always got plenty of instruction about sound quality and recording quality from listening to their recordings on Doug's system over the Dead years from 84-95. The 441's made some great sounding GD recordings in 83 and 84 as folks were first going pcm digi, as I recall.

both who wore Nudie suits died within the past two weeks.
That might have had something to do with it.
Ok who's got a GOOD pic of Phil in his Nudie Suit
donny it was $6 for a can a bud. REd stripes and henikens were 8.....but hey its new york city....thats pretty cheap compared to what u wil spend out at bars on a night on the town in NYC.
oh... my bad... i couldnt bring myself to buy a bud... I just figured everything in cans was $8!
Mountain Jim. Get the McCue aud which is now "UP" and you can d/l piecemeal via Internet Archives. Further, you can 'sample' it as well before even d'l it.
It's the best recording (of 11/5) that I've tasted. Rich, warm in your face recording.
11/10 & 11/11 I'm picking up from the taper tomorrow nite.
I will give a listen to the McCue aud today. Just looking at it's source: Master Audience Cassettes; (FOB) 2 Sennheiser e835s > Sony TC-DM5
Lineage: MAC (Maxell XLII's)> Nakamich Dragon
leads me to some questions... Is the uploaded source from a 2nd gen cassette copy, not the master? That's distortion right there, if so. I owned that very deck (Sony TC-D5M) and plugged into Doug Oade's same deck in 83 and 84, and while I did like it's warm sound, back then we used Maxell or TDK metal tapes because XLII's oversaturated and distorted at average signal levels, whereas the metal cassettes could handle rich high-frequency content without distorting.
I did like the analog sound better than early PCM digi, and the Oade Augusta Maine 10/12/84 Grateful Dead, at archive.org, is a great example of this analog source signal path's fine sound. I was at this show and plugged into Doug so I have this on a master cassette also.
I don't anything about these mics so I can't comment on that.
Thank god you cant comment on the mics, my head is spinning from that other shit you wrote? Such as: "FOB) 2 Sennheiser e835s > Sony TC-DM5
Lineage: MAC (Maxell XLII's)> Nakamich Dragon arly PCM digi, and the Oade Augusta Maine" WTF. Please spare the comments. Thx
petdan? Why are you being a you-know-what?
eephour was touting this (McCue) source, I posted part of it's lineage and asked if it really was a 2nd gen cassette then that adds hiss and distortion (which I could hear by the way, though I did think its position in the hall was much better than the other source I compared it to).
I only added that about the Oade 1984 and the deck to indicate I was quite familiar with the sound from that (ancient history now) casettte deck.
Again I ask, why is your head spinning because I question an apparent 2nd gen cassette source being touted as really good just because it's analog?
If you don't understand my post or can't comment intelligently without pejoratives, maybe you should be the one sparing your comments. What I wrote: "FOB) 2 Sennheiser e835s > Sony TC-DM5
Lineage: MAC (Maxell XLII's)> Nakamich Dragon" was merely a partial quote from the archive.org McCue source info to point out that's a 2nd gen cassette source. wtf is your problem?
If you plant ice, you are going to harvest wind.
will you guys please speak English??? lol
My commentary concerned a discussion in this thread about getting archive.org audience downloads from this Phil run and trying to get the best sounding of the options available, specifically 11/5 was the show that (the nice and helpfull) eephour recommended the McCue source as the one to get:
http://www.archive.org/details/paf2007-11-05.fob.s enn_e835.mccue-ford.sbeok.flac16
So I went there, found out it's source equipment linage, and asked a question about it. For that I was told by petdan to 'spare the comments' concerning 'that other shit you wrote' (without indicating clearly what his specific issue with my post was, just shut-up basically)
That just seemed pretty unkind and unnecessary to me, someone who came to this forum to read reviews of these shows and find out where the best aud recordings to download them from were.
I will keep coming here looking for opinions and links to sources from the final night's show, as they become available. I appreciate all the tapers and archivers efforts.
i've got TONS of pictures..putting them up in like..30 seconds.
gonna put them up here, kaylie? hope so - would love to see some photos
http://picasaweb.google.com/KrazyRose/PhilleshNyc
great pics Kaylie, thanks for sharing. I think I was standing right by your friend holding up the birthday sign by the box office when my friends were looking for tix.
I'm a 44-year-old dead head who had been to many shows (70, 80?) and who plays intermittently in a dead band. But I have not seen a whole lot of the post-Dead music. The last time was Jones Beach with "The Dead" back in 2001. I mention this to say I speak from a combination of experience and inexperience.
All I can say is Sunday was an absolutley incredible show. The most obvious and remarkable aspect was the energy from Phil, the drummer and the entire band. Put it this way, Phil, 20 years-plus my senior, outplayed me.
But the most overwhelming feeling I had was of the eternity of the Dead's music. This band interpreted the songs in new and very fresh ways, staying true to the essential core of the songs, but giving them new life. I thought Jackie Greene's vocals were superb, at times sounding like the lead singer from Wallflowers, or even a Counting Crows style.
For me, the Golden Road opener set the stage that this would be a take-no-prisoners night. I didn't care much for Chest Fever, but Jackie's vocals on Brown-Eyed Woman let me very specifically know that these guys were their own band, not an attempt at a knock off.
Larry Campbell was energetic, interesting and creative throughout. I could listen to the drummer play solo for an entire evening. (There were times I just wanted the rest of the band to go away so I could just hear Phil and the drummer jam. No offense meant to other band members.)
The acoustic set was wonderful but it was the Cumberland jam that put the show absolutely over the top. Everything after that was uphill!!!
The Dew seemed to me like an ode to Jerry and it was beautifully done.
My best friend who I grew up with going to shows and listening to the Dead recently died and I approached the evening with a bit of scepticism and fear. Scepticism because I didn't love the last incarnation I saw and fear because I wasn't sure what emotions would come over me.
I walked away comforted by the eternity of the music, sure that my late friend would have been as overwhelmed as I was.
Thanks Phil and the band.
FYI, "The Dead" only played Jones Beach in 2003 and 2004.
then it wasn't that long ago.. still, it's been a while since i've seen any of the boys
what years did the other ones tour?
1998, 2000 (without Phil; Alphonso Johnson on bass), and 2002.
LoL at Mountain Jim, boy you love reading your own words! Please spare us !! I prefer when you said you can't comment; the post was so yawn inducing !
^^^^
WTF?
Speaking of yawn inducing and preferring that someone wouldn't comment -- why don't you crawl back under whatever rock you crawled out from under?
Some people are actually interested in the finer aspects of taping, obviously not you though.
Whatever.
>>>I appreciate all the tapers and archivers efforts.
Tapers are righteous. Tapers rock.
Ha ha, lol at NC as well, is this a technical (aka geek) thread or the review of 11-11-07 Nokia show. Take this boring crap to the "Techie Talk" thread under "Discussion", and while your at it, get a life !
LoL at Mountain Jim, boy you love reading your own words! Please spare us !! I prefer when you said you can't comment; the post was so yawn inducing !
Hey Dannyboy. A quick question. Is your stupidity innate or is it all learned behavior?
Without folks like McCue 'taping', there's no way that one can 'relive' these shows. They were great to see "live" and it'll be great to relive em (I've got 11/10 & 11/11 in my car as I write) in the years to come jackA$$.
Now. Sit and chew on that for a bit.
What a bunch of poumous asses here. Tapers perform a service, but they are a strange bunch of males who probably get more action from their hands then from members of the opposite sex ! With a name like TK (Eeephour)--- what is this Harry Potter land?
Jonsing can throw insults (well if he could spell them he could) but shows his lack of GD arcania knowledge as well as class in the above post - Eeephour (the tune) being a very cool instrumental (along with spidergawd if I recall) from Jerry's original solo album release - Garcia.
Thanks again eeephour for your earlier helpfulness in this thread.
I come around here for phil reviews and info about the available recordings of these shows, apparently this forum is a favorite for immature/insecure insult-spewing trolls who either did not experience or did not understand what the GD was about...... ice meet wind.
...
I found one version of this show (11/11) up now on archive.org, but it is missing the encore so I thought I would wait for more choices.
Do not worry about spelling , you get the point well enough being the pompous (or poumous) ass you are. Just speak english wizard and try to get out a little.
please quit polluting this thread.
and then there was Phil....
Lol, this is all TOO FUNNY >>> Chew on that --- love the harry potter and wizard references, ties into the geek reference. Just take this boring technical geek taper crap to the Techie Board, thats where it belongs. My head is still spinning from the original post: "FOB) 2 Sennheiser e835s > Sony TC-DM5
Lineage: MAC (Maxell XLII's)> Nakamich Dragon arly PCM digi, and the Oade Augusta Maine" . Please now.
Mountain Jim. The 10th and 11th will be up (via the same source) shortly. I know the 11th has both encores Unbroken and Brokedown.
all the shows are for sale as digital downloads - some are on hold and will be available early december. I got my 11/11 preordered!
I only see the 11/11 show available for pre-order, what about the rest of the run at the Nokia?

>>I will give a listen to the McCue aud today. Just looking at it's source: Master Audience Cassettes; (FOB) 2 Sennheiser e835s > Sony TC-DM5

leads me to some questions... Is the uploaded source from a 2nd gen cassette copy,
no. the nak dragon was used to transfer the master - at least that would be my guess.
archive.org now not serving the one recording posted for this show - says errors with metadata or some such - I was a few songs short of the 2nd set.
Did the show get pulled for some reason?
get the torrent off etree.....MUCH better recording.
I can't do torrents with my satellite bandwidth- limited connection. (no dsl or cable available where I live) Which recording are you referring to as much better? Hopefully it will be posted in song parts to archive.org eventually. Thanks.
Milab VM44>Lunatec V2>Korg MR1000 (whatever that means.....)
Keith I've heard the other versions off of etree.
While some may opine that we're splitting K hunt hairs here, the up of the McCue aud (they're being worked on by Albix) will be the proof in the pudding.
I'm talking bout the 10 & the 11th.
A world of difference in this writer's view.
to each his own.....
it'd be hard to do better than the 11/11 milab pull
i had an amazing time as did all i hope. i went the last two nights, great setlists, jackie green is a great singer. molo and phil one of top five best drum and bass in all music probably, completely underrated. however, larry campbell plays well but as a guitarist and musician i cant help but state that he plays a lot of blues scales and minor blues scale mostly at that, basically bb king or eric clapton over everything, including darkstar, terrapin, eyes (doesnt really fit) also his tone is distorted(ie metallish), almost always. im not saying he has to play jerry or anything at all in particular but he should be able to play more than bob dylan, allman bros, or the band, or skynyrd, etc type of solos. we can all admit grateful dead music takes it further than those other bands, thats one of the reasons why this music is so damn good! either way the show was a really good time. great tunes, brokedown palace, til the morning comes, ripple and some other rarities. jimmy or scofield would probably be better lead guitar than larry campbell but jackie and molitz definitely work. even so, i will still travel to ny or california to see phil no matter who he plays with. also helluva setlist saturday and sunday night. long live phil!
had a great time at the shows. jackie green is a great singer and it was great to be with all of my old friends from yesteryear on tour. its gonna be great to reconnect with everyone again in the future.... it would be great to hear from any old friends of course... the sound in the Nokia was great and Larry Campbell or course was amazing.. and my old friend John Molo. Phil on the standup bass was fantastic and gettin Phils wristband on the last night was awesome. Sayin goodbye to Phil getting into his taxi was the ultimate too. I hope to see you all on tour in the future...
LOvE RoCknRoLL please get in touch ... we wish you a wonderful holiday season..
