Ok less then a month away! Anyone familiar with the venue? Any ideas how lot scene will be? Order of show and time frame? My guess Hunter for 45 min then Dylan for an hour then Dead for two sets. Think Dylan will agree to him being on the soundboards?
St Pete Times forum in Tampa is in a pretty decent location. There is alot to do in the vacinity Ybor city is about 5-10 minute drive and that is a real cool place. Has alot of similarities to New Orleans but with a Latin Flare fun place to party. Parking in the area looks relatively plenty and be prepared and wear lots of SUNSCREEN because the florida sun will knock you out. Water should be drank throughout the day to ward off any heat related illness and be prepared for afternoon showers because they occur just about everyday aroound here.
My friend that lives in Tampa said that St. Pete Times Forum is bad for sound. He said "it's not very bad but not that great either" He saw 2 concerts there, maybe it was the bands or the sound guy. Who Knows? Does anybody know about St Petes and the sound?
just saw Neil Young there and it was pretty damn good for sound, although if the seats aren't filled, it tends to be boomy in there.
The sound isn't all that good unless you have really good seats, which I don't. Remember that even tho the name of the place is the St Pete Times Arena---it's really in Tampa.
Ybor City is a hopping strip of resturants and bars only a few miles away--and connected by a new trolley service. Have a Cuba Libre (rum and coke) while you're there. There is also a cool aquarium right near the arena.
I have no idea what kind of lot scene there will be, but there is an open container law which seems to be enforced sporatically. Enjoy the show.
There is also a world renouned nudie bar near the football stadium.
The parking is kind of scattered in lots in the surrounding downtown area, although the open lot next to the parking garage might be a good shakedown bet...though since we are back to the summer 4:30 rain cycle, maybe I'd recommend the garage. There are several lots about the size of a quarter city block, a couple bigger ones, the garage, and plenty of free parking for the crafty.
There are a couple of bars across the street, generic sports bars I'd not usually go to but probably aren't too offensive.
Sound was great for Neil Young. I think it is boomy of you are up high. Unfortunately, I don't get the feeling you'll be able to move around much. The ushers seemed to be really nice older folks who very helpfully follow all rules to a T.
BAD NEWS--Florida's new "no indoor smoking law" went into effect July 1, which means that everyone is big on enforcing it right now. And that applies to ALL smoking.
Beers 7$. No search for Neil Young.
E mail from Dead Ticketing tickets were shipped yesterday yeah!
>>>"There are a couple of bars across the street, generic sports bars I'd not usually go to but probably aren't too offensive. "
There is one across the street named "Newk's" that will be open and jamming with local Dead cover band "Uncle John's Band" as well as a killer local band named "Rich Whitely Band"
If you wanna see music pre-show or more music after the show, Rich Whitely Band will not disappoint. I believe they have John Zias on guitar, a great musician, to be sure.
oky dokey got back from all five shows at the rock, and now it is time to get pumped for D&D at the whatever palace. REDROCKS BLEW MY FUCKING MIND, AND MY EXPECTATIONS WERE HIGH.
actually it is hard to get pumped for these fl indoor shows, i may not even go to miami (probably will). we have 13 th row for tampa, and with dylan it should be way cool, but when you look up you aint gonna see huge red boulders, a full moon, and the stars in the cool colorado summer wind (i think i just got chubbed up).
sunday- was the 4th best of the five. great setlist. tommorrow never knows (which i never really got into) was unreal, i almost teared up. it was clearly tribute to jerry nite, hes gone, etc. they sounded almost too tight especially on music and samson.
then monday it was ok "last night we paid homeage", tonight you get to see what we are now. and it was the best of the 5. holy shit till the morning comes! even the ratdog tunes were most listenable to. loser, candyman, deal, sugar mags, ssdd, cold rain and snow SUGAREE,west la fade, all were the best i ever heard live (about 100 shows). i was singing till the morning comes till dawn the next morning.
Tuesday what else can i say but look at the set list. looks like rain was PHAT. the stagger lee mister charlie was INSANE. both of these nights we were sitting 10th row on jimmys side by the screen. the drumz in the 2nd set was the best i ever saw (and that topped monday where mickey jumped up on the stringed instruments and started committing sexual acts on it). the lights and the drumz had me in laughter, and the sounds were fibratting from the center of my body out. and it wasnt just the sidney, i asked people who were sober and they said they same thing. it was friggin amazing. the first four songs in the 2nd set were solid, then REUBEN and CHERISE which was very hot. the lovelight closer was phat as a christmas ham. also joan was obviously moved by the flowers and cake. she is starting to get some balls out there, and it is fun to watch. brokedown was the perfect end telling us to take it easy for a day.
thursday was the only let down but it was still solid. the help slip HCS hard to handle was clean, no mistakes, but the extra blast was sort of not there, immho. dark star bertha was hot!
2nd set seemed to have some rough transitions. minglewood was cool, eyes was mistake free but not crazy. drumz and space were not as good as the previous two nites, but cool anyway. the wheel seemed rough, dissapointing. dark star throwing stones were very good and i enjoyed that alot, especially given all the bs on the geopolitical seen ( and i have not seen it since jerry died). loose lucy was a creat pick, but what the phuck was it? it never really got going and just ended. it looked like someone wanted to do a second encore, but they just gave up. we were 7 rows in that night, but the sidney could have been playing tricks, we were flying (AGAIN)
Friday 2nd best nite in my opinion. SET LIST SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. i just wish they would have done the caution. the viola ripple closer was so good words can not describe. drumz space alright china rider solid terrapin, golden road, ll/s, forget about it, this cant be happening, but it was and it was phat. slip in midnight hr and religious stella blue and everyone walked away very happy.
hats off to RED ROCKS. the security was cool as shit, and i say the play two weeks their next summmer!
a festivus for the rest of us
see you in two weeks. you guys will like this band!
I'm sorry Redneck, but is Uncle John's Band playing? I do NOT want to hear them after the dead. Rich Whitely Band is fine. However, since Rich is in UJB and the drummer for UJB told me they have a gig, I geuss that's what's going on at Newks. No offense to UJB, they are OK, but cheesey to see them after the dead.
OUTPOST is the other bar across the street. I'd favor that one for the reasons above. And then there's always the local's favorite, The Hub.
Also, Jerrod's Door is playing at New World Brewer in Ybor, which is a nice bar with an excellent beer selection.
Oooookay....
Uncle John's Band at Twilight, some club in Ybor
Fuck that.
Rich Whitely Band at Newks, with Kona's 2d favorite guitar player.
I don't really care about seeing music after, but its an outdoor patio stage which may lend a festive air and encourage a general attitude of tolerance by the local constables.
To quote Rich Whitely:
We're gonna raise the roof,
Gonna knock it clean off the house......
what i want to know is what camp ground the party will move to after the show? chief hosa at red tocks was INSANE. i mean it was a walmart for shopping for the good bad and illegal. 3 people died for gods sake. what are these kids thinkin? kids today? man i sound like my mom and im 32.
there will be no tailgate scene right? where would it be Channelside? LOL
i m just pumped we have 13th row. the only other show i have seen their is DMB and we did not have good seats. THE SOUND SUCKED!! and it wasnt the bands fault, that place is not music friendly.
for all the poor drunks on tour the hub is your spot! i blackout just looking at the place, and it is cheap.
anyone know the preferred camp site here in tampa? i would guess it would be north of the city since the next show is in atlanta. if i am spinning my head off, i will likely take a cab out there and hang with the freak show!
If I were staying overnight and needed a cheap place to camp and didn't have to go to ATL--Gandy
If I were going to ATL, I'd hang downtown for a while and then start driving, crash at Paynes Prairie for a couple hours, but its an 8 hour drive, so maybe just switch drivers and keep moving.
Downtown should be fun for a while. Reminds me of the setup in some NE cities, with downtown right there and lots of small lots.
Many many ways to do a show.
I'm glad its inside. It's been pouring rain every day at show time and it's hot and muggy as hell. On the flipside, I can't control the flowers growing in my yard. Porterweed 5 feet tall.
yep that is for sure! my yard needed the rain bigtime. i was really surprised to see these venues but when you at some of the other venues (camden nj?), you can tell its not ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC. when bob and phil got back together in 01, and then it started falling into place i began to speculate of couple of the boyz left their money in the market too long. its just a personal opinion, but after reading that article in denver post that opinion was reinforced.
frankly i dont really care why they are back. all that i know is they are back, and much much better than most of the shows i saw post brent, if not all. if it is all one big act and the really cant stand each other, that is none of my biz. what is my biz, is getting turned on and dancin my ass, and is what happened at red rocks, BIGTIME! the venue had much to do with it, but they sure werent up their wetting the bed.
i hope dlyan plays with em, i wonder?
who knows if fl is as good as the rock, hotlanta might make it on my list of shit to do.
what i think looks real exciting is that phil and friends with bradford and joan in ct. i am very tempted to get plane tixs for that.
MONS VENUS!!!! HELL YEAH!!!!

Wow this is the most interesting set by Bob in months. The Dead seem to be really rejuvenating old Bob, just as I thought they would. Very nice.

Interested to know how SMR worked out...
any word on hunters list?
Tim,
Was Dylan any better last night? Sorry for the "idiotic" comment.
dylan was better
but what the hell was that last nite, was it even the same band as tues?
EVEN only the strange remain was smokin
and i still think that first set is still going on.
someone must have doesd the band last nite, probably these two freaks from new york who were killing me all night up front on phils side.
hunter was UNREAL
the lost/ tenn jed/ saint first set closer was totally uncalled for. it was off the hook over the top
caution was two years long
totally and completely insane
holy shit
did that really happen?
can anyone confirm that the first set is still going on?
"THIS MUST BE HEAVEN last nite they CROSSED THE LINE"
i just looked and there is an double e waterfall over my back right now and jerry is sitting on it with a big azz grin. pig is there to telling me joan rocks on caution

Tampa . . .
Much younger crowd than Sunrise with a lot more energy.
I'll start with Dylan: pretty similar to Sunrise - it didn't really do anything for me. Mostly unintelligible. That being said, before I get flamed like I did in my Sunrise post, I still love the man and appreciate all he has contributed musically to this world. Some of my all-time favorite songs are Dylan songs. In my opinion, if I didn't see him open, I didn't miss very much. This is based upon an aural intake of what happened; not a comment on the man or the legend. So, keep the "Dylan is God" attitude in check.
Set 1 completely kicked ass; very high energy, superb setlist; very tight playing. A lot of smiles on stage.
Help-Slip- we called it- Bobby did a countdown and you just knew it was coming. Jimmy and Phil complemented each other very well in the winding phrasing that starts Slipknot! From seeing setlists and going to PLQ, it was obvious Franklin's wasn't going to start until later. Phil then started the descending scale for FOTD and they jammed it very shortly.
Blackbird emerged for what seemed to me to be Bobby turning on a dime. It certainly wasn't expected given the FOTD jam was very quick-- kind of like what you expect from PLQ before they play FOTD. However, Blackbird was great. Though I happen to be a big fan of the song, I love Bob's acoustic work on this; his voice is suited for the range called for by the song. Pretty much the whole crowd was singing.
Dylan's entree into The Dead-- let me start by saying that I enjoyed Dylan during this part of the show; perhaps because the vocal work required by the 3 song selection involves a chorus in each song-- FOTD was sweet; Bobby, Rob and Phil on the vocals essentially forced Dylan to slow down his typical phrasing. In all, a nice song. Next, Gotta Serve Somebody was nice; the word that creeps into my mind was raunchy-- it had a nice edge. Like A Rolling Stone-- the tune was recognizeable, the background singing by the Dead again slowed Dylan down. It was a nice trio from Dylan/Dead.
Milestones was a nice jam; Why Don't We Do It in the Road-- I really like Joan's voice on this song. It's perfect for her.
Night of a Thousand Stars-- I always liked this PLQ song and Joan's voice is as good as Warren's on this tune. (Of course, I miss Warren's slide work on the song, but I can see this as a song that could be worked into the regular repetoire).
End of First Set: Sailor>Tennessee Jed>Saint
All I could say is WOW! What energy; Bobby getting some vocal freedom on Sailor and Saint; Tennessee Jed unexpectedly appeared in the middle of a melodic sandwich. Nice contrast from the melodic Sailor; bluesy Tennessee; straight-forward rocking of Saint. In all: what a great way to end the First Set.
Missed Hunter tonight, though I heard some of his stuff in the hallway.
2nd Set: The energy from the end of the first set carried into the second set which was the highlight of the show for me. Though the setlist doesn't mention it, there was a small "warm up" intro to the set that led Bobby to start strumming the chords to Jack Straw. This tune fucking rocked and rocked hard. Robby sang Jerry's part (not Joan)-- I agree with everyone that Rob should sing more and this was a treat. After Bobby sang the last line and you hear that Bm-D-A jam, I normally expect to hear it build up and then into the "Jack Straw from Wichita" line. Instead of just reaching a single crescendo and ending the song, Bobby brought it down, nice and slow, and then the whole band revved it up fo a second crescendo before singing the chorus. It went on for a while and, thankfully, Bobby didn't jump in and end the song like he so often did with GD. Of the two Florida shows, this song to me was the best.
Next- Mountains of the Moon- sweet and slow; I loved Phil's voice on this tune (I know that sounds like a strange thing to say). Slow and folksey- brought down the feeling to a mellow appropriateness. Next Mickey: Only the Strange Remain- a song that doesn't need comment for the obvious reason.
Next Caution!-- so obvious from Phil's bass line, but so freakin' long. What a treat to hear Mountains and Caution in one show. Now, I'm going to preface this part with a comment: I like Joan; I like her voice; I like her moves (she's sexy!); I think she fits well into the band. However, as my friend said, "when this show stops being a Vegas revue and becomes a Dead show again, I'll go back in." Joan did this long vocal thing that went on way too long. At one point she was vocally riffing and then said something like, "let's hear it Mr. Bob Weir"-- and then Bobby started jamming like he was "called out." It was this cheesiness that just went on way too long. I would have preferred another song into Drums then what seemed like 15 minutes of Vegas revue! Don't get me wrong, I liked her on the song for a few minutes but then it got old. However, in the end, the jamming was tight; it could have done with less vocals.
Drums/Space- pee break. (Note: Tampa stopped selling food/drink around 11:00 - not cool for when it's needed during this point of the show.)
So Many Roads- my favorite "new" Jerry song-- although Bob butchered the words in the beginning, it's just such a friggin' nice song. I love that line: "wind inside, wind outside, tangled in the window blind. Tell me why you treat me so unkind." Bobby recovered in the second verse and led it to a strong conclusion, "So Many Roads, to ease my soul!" I agree; nice to hear this tune again.
Finally, the band came back to the end of Slipknot! into the obligatory Franklin's (not that I'm complaining). Franklin's did not disappoint! It was fast; smooth and together. There was a point where Jimmy was staring at Phil and smiling. What a great way to end a show! High energy; tight! Nothing left to say.
Donor Rap: Phil was funny; some comment like, "you felt it too, right?"
Encore: For some reason, everyone around me was expecting a slow encore; like a Brokedown (perhaps because the nickname of the arena is the Ice Palace.) Instead, a furious Johnny B. Goode. Fun, fun way to end the show.
Misc: Dead played until midnight; encore over at around 12:10.
Sum and substance: much tighter sound than TOO Fall tour. The switching between Rob and Jeff works well-- sound is not so complicated as can be when they both play.
I had a great time. Brought back some fun memories from college. Go see them if you get the chance; it was so worth it.
Peace.
I agree that after awhile the joan "I'm talkin to the ladies" was a bit much. But when she did call out Bobby, he fuckin RIPPED. You go Bob!
We got to sit above where the performers entered the actual arena....and yes, we got all cheesy and cheered and yelled "thank you" to each one as they left. It was fun.....
I don't know how the sound was up high, but where we were it sounded pretty good.

CAN’T WAIT
florida rocks

ROLLLLLLLL ON
I have a theory that Phil Bobby and The Dead start these tours or legs in Fla. to steal our shrooms for the rest of the tour. My compliments to the chefs at Bertha's Kitchen. First thing about last night was I regret not going in for Dylans full set. I did catch the last four songs and thought that Dylan and his band was on. The only problem was that the place was only half filled and the sound was not turned up enough. Now on to the set that never ended. Unbelievable is all I can say about the energy of the crowd and mostly the band. The band played all out fast paced rockin and they were born to back Dylan. The Dylan portion was some of the best live music I have experienced. Jimmy Herring's playing has changed from Phil and Friends and is the root to the majic and there was majic last night. After the Jack Straw the second set slowed down the pace alot and the energy of the crowd did not peak again until Franklins and Bobby be Good. Phils vocals were the best that I have heard him sing. Two things that I have been waiting for was to see how bad Mickey really sings, and what does joan bring to the mix. Only the strange remain was done very well Mickey really tore it up altough the chorus added a lot this song. Joan was missing from the stage alot and the do it in the road was awsome. This was during the first set when I had to leave my 19th. Row seat to do some marathon dancin at the rear of the floor. Go See This Band you will not be disappointed.
Aye Aye matie. Yo ho ho and a stolen bottle of amstel light.
Sure was good to see my fave yankee and my cool new friend. Tell blondie (yooo hooo I know you're out there) I'll be happy to make that trip to publix we never got around to. You guys are the bestest.
No more Wendy's. Ever. Why do I only stop there on the way to shows??
Y'all come back now, y'hear?
2nd set Tampa RULED! Mountains of the Moon/Caution-YIKES! Drums- Zen Yoga 14 armed hindu satori into mad science atom bomb cataclysm...Franklins Tower untoppable? Wait- JOHNNY B GOODE!!! I'd write more but my brains are toast (Hi Schnee- Lochner & I made it back to Massachusetts unscathed- funny seeing you right after the lights came on...)
Hmmmm- I think I was the only one who went to this one who was not too impressed. Yeah, the set list looked great but the performances were sloppy as hell. Atlanta was LIGHT YEARS better than this show - like a whole different band...
i thought it was interesting to watch the band during the fotd tease, because Dylan was suppose to come out. all of them looking at each other, "where's Bob". Bobby points at Jeff to solo and then Jimmy. then Bobby takes the band into a unplanned blackbird and after back into fotd. here comes Dylan to join the band. when the song is finished, Bob and Bobby get together and laugh about it. it was very interesting to watch the interplay between the band when something unexpected came up and they pulled it off great.
anyone here if Official Concert recording is going to include Dylan with The Dead?
Got my cds and WOW!!!!
better than any of the five shows i saw at red rocks!!
NO JOKE!
i knew it at the show but i was so spun i wanted to hear the CD.
the first set was unreal, and the second was filled with odd choices but it rocked.
JUST LISTEN TO PHIL DURING THE RAP, they were on fire.
they will becoming back here! i hope phil and friends make their way here before the beacon, or soon there after.
I agree. everything was so perfect with this show. Band crowd outside everything just fell into place listened to the audience tapes and it confirmed my hunch I had while I was there it was truly a special moment definately one of the top five of the tour from what my ears tell me
