***Thanks Phil, Jackie, Larry, Molo, Steve Berlin and Steve Molitz ****
I REALLY needed this SHOW!
wait, you forgot jackie blows out the #2 and #7 candles on his cake (not the one the girl came out of) and #2 got tricky....
oh and the show started about 7:45PM and finished up about 12:40AM....
holy crap this show was amazing.
my feet are gonna hurt for days, but it was worth it.
i can't get over that version of sugaree! it was hot.
wow, thats a freakin good amount of music..alright phil, and alright westies!!
Awesome show! And I agree on the Sugaree.
I though this was an EPIC show.
Just completely blew my mind
Awesome, sounds much like last night at the Nokia. Good for you guys.
((((Long live Phil Lesh!!!)))
Wasn't the first verse of Dark Star instrumental?
both verses were sung no caution feedback with big brown this show was other worldly. thank you phil and friends.epic is right this band brings it.jackies vocals were rite on .great jams by all china cat was phunkee!!!!!!!!
CA gets all the good shows.
the girl in th ecake was not in a reed sequin bikini-i dont know what that guy smoked..she was wearing a traditional mexican catilian dress, and had a rose in her mouth...
Massive show. It started at 7:45pm and we walked out at 1:30 am. They were still selling spirits at midnight.
Very loud PA.
No holds barred show. Jamtastic on every song. San Francisco at it's best.
Mardi Gras on sale today.
How long were the setbreaks? That adds up to 4 hours and 15 minutes of music if both breaks were 45 minutes each, which would be pretty long for a three set show.
YOWZA!
it was ALOT of show! The set breaks didn't seem like they were 45 minutes, the time really flew by...
Mexican Girl in the cake... neato.
Steve Berlin rocks!
(((((hoping for a sbd that dial-uppers are allowed to hear)))))
Holy shit! This band has really gelled since the Greek show. For those of you who were asking "Why Larry?" the guy put on an incredible display of guitar pyrotechnics all night. I knew that they had been doing The Band classic "Chest Fever" but nowhere on the setlists does it mention that they do "The Genetic Method" which is the Garth Hudson organ extravaganza that Larry Campbell ripped on last night. Have they done this all along? Because if so, then completists need to note it. Campbell was also playing a Les Paul all night though a Marshall stack which really sounded arena crunchy all night. And the acoustc set! It was incedible seeing and hearing Phil play that standup bass and again, Larry Campbell...was that some fantastic sawing during Bill Monroe's "Big Mon" or what?
Why Larry? You got your 23 reasons last night.
On the other hand Steve Berlin did nothing for me. I guess it was that he was playing a baritone sax and he was playing in the same sonic frequency as Phil and Larry. I just couldn't hear him as he couldn't cut through the mix at all playing in that low end...but he sure looked good. And Phil playing Big Brown ~ the Warfield floor rumbled and the foundation shook.
This was simply an epic three set show by a band that is clearly at the top of their game.
ALOT!
Great comments Nick, agreed on all fronts! The Master Larry Campbell was in the pocket all night.
<<<<Mexican Girl in the cake... neato.
HAHAHAHA that Phil...
Where to even begin with this one? What a night, an affair to remember no doubt!
The birthday spirit was in the air, party hats and noise makers were the norm on Market Street. Everything aligned just right as the zoners all gathered at the end of the line...special thanks to Roo's friend Nancy, for being clear headed and quick to respond when it was needed...hopefully, our friend from the sidewalk is recovering comfortably.
Inside I made a beeline for the rail and that's where I stayed! Not a chance I was leaving once things got started! What a view--I've got a fish-eye sort of image of phil and his upright in front of his stack burned into my retina at the moment! WOW!!! Larger than life, indeed!
The entire setlist is amazing, it's impossible to single any one thing out as over the top, it was a package deal...we got it all! Seeing Phil surprise Jackie with the big cake and the mexican girl was priceless!! Even with the balloons, the noise makers and all the other obvious makings of a party...Jackie had no idea there was a woman in a cake waiting! The cake was staged behind a black curtain just off to the side of the stage, right in front of Jackie the whole time, he still didn't see it coming! Jackie had his back turned to the Cake, as it was wheeled out to center stage, he turned and saw it, his hands completely dropped--stopped playing dead in his tracks! What a look of surprise!! He put his hands back on the guitar and tried to keep playing, as the band played on but it didn't happen.
Phil was absolutely giddy, beside himself that the surprise went off without a hitch. The Mexican Girl, followed by an actual cake with candles...a big moment staged for us, the balloons and the spectacle, next to a sweet, genuine moment between Phil and Jackie, the grins were priceless. Jackie's wow-you-got-me look, followed up by Phil's yeah-I-did look back! That is how a birthday is done!!
An aside, We had a chill security guy in front of us, we kept him in the loop, and that kept us all happy. No big shock there, we're all there to have fun...but what did shock me was the teaspoon of blow that came from over my shoulder, not shocking when the security guy made short work of it though. Watching him try to deal with the balloon flood after that was a hoot though...he really did not want those balloons around him, he got a little twitchy with them...ha ha ha ha.
You wanna hear Phil dropped a bomb here, Larry smoked it there, I'll leave that to someone else, I'm wrapping my brain around it all but words can't explain it...without all the flowery verbage, I'll just say, that was one helluva show!!
Happy Birthday Jackie! Hope the scarf finds it's way to you eventually. Dennis chucked it right to him as the band was taking the stage before set one, he picked up it and put it right on top of his organ where it sat all night, untouched and lost in the commotion. The stage hands were very careful to clean around it, leaving it right on top of the organ, I finally lost sight of it when they shooed me off the floor at the very end.
I kinda still wanna hear Maggie's Farm though...Mardi Gras?
I think that we can all agree that last night was one heck of a show. i thought that the Nokia shows were smokin. I would have taken last night for my birthday show! I wish we could all come to an agreement on the title of the acoustic instrumental songs that are being played. I have a feeling that there are more than one.
last night was big mon
A Time for Healing...
I crossed the bridge into the city,
my mind again amazed at how pretty...
Those oddly flavored downtown streets,
walkin along, the same old Vans on my feet...
I scan the faces, for red curls, above the shoulders of the crowd,
then I realized, to do this, I'm not allowed...
Then I see my old friend,
and he says,"Hey NOW! come right in..."
Ahhh, the familiar history in my face,
the kind aura of this treasured place....
The house that Bay Art created,
a place where our feelings are truly inflated...
I stood inside the warm halls just gazing,
at these walls of artist that are so amazing...
My heart cried tears of joy,
I was so lucky to be here now to enjoy...
I soon got this relieving feeling,
as the music started, I was already healing...
With only love flowing through my veins,
the past was smudging away, as quickly as it came...
I no longer looked around for you,
for me, to be whole,
remembering,
only MY heart,
and love for myself,
can soothe MY soul...
I flowed like the ocean winds along the North Coast,
thanks to the sounds of our definitive and persistent host...
Oh, Thank you, Thank you Father Time,
for teaching my soul,
how to forgive,
and again how to live,
and Thank you again,
Gracious Mr. Phil,
for helping us,
to love, to grow,
and mostly,
for helping,
us all,
to Heal...

thank you again Phil and Friends for touching my soul with your art...

too awesome!
What a difference a couple of months and 25 + shows will do.
P & F was much tighter than Greek. The difference in the “Cumberlands” made it evident things had gelled very well. Everyone in the band seemed really comfortable with the material and arrangements.
My only suggestion for the night would have been to hear Larry a little bit more in the mix. I had row H balcony seats right in the middle with a great view of the stage but, perhaps, the sound isn’t as good up there. I was glad to hear Molitz more prominent in the mix since Greek. I would have liked to check out the sound from the floor, but the ability to wander about the W has changed since the last time I was there and I was unable to check out the sound from other parts of the house, other than the balcony. Also, what happened to speakers in the balcony bar? I used to love that because the mix was coming straight from the board.
Side note: one of the Warfield staff told us that the owners will change hands in April. He said last night may possibly be Phil’s “last show at the Warfield”. I hope he is wrong about that.
I took my daughter last night and we got in line and were able to hang with Emily, Canyon (briefly – where did Canyon go? Oh, he’s up in front now. {{{Canyon}}}), the Chico contingent, (Roo, Nancy – nice work aiding the fallen fellow in line!, and Buncombe), Hall, Doogs, Nancy and Ripplein, Todd, and Garyfish (great talking with a fellow Crown nipper). Frankie – emotw soon. Inside saw Shag and Joel. Always great to see you guys. I thought I saw Wizard there, but in passing. I’m sure I saw some others and forgive me if I forgot anyone.
The music was really quite fantastic. This P& F arrangement may be the best one I’ve seen and heard so far. I will qualify that by saying I am a bit prejudiced since I’ve always been in Jackie’s corner and am impressed with his contribution to the band and his interpretation of Dead material. I don’t think I need to “guarantee” his shows around here anymore (but, I will) and I am glad that more people are getting him. I had heard Jackie planned to move his home base from Sacramento to a bigger city. It was nice to hear Phil introduce Jackie with, “from San Francisco”. Couldn’t have picked a better place.
The highlights for me were in the 2nd set, namely China, Slipknot>Franklin’s and one of my all time favorite’s, Box of Rain. It was also nice to hear Unbroken Chain, which I haven’t heard live for a long time.
Daughter enjoyed her first Phil sans Grateful Dead show, but would like to sit closer next time. Next time? Cool.
A few zoner shout outs...to all the kids with their parents, it's a beautiful thing when Phamily is family! It was a delight to meet Hailey and her parents, a recent philzone convert from the JGe board, along with vanessaluvsjackie! Also nice to meet the younger Mylar and a brief encounter with a daughter2K!
Great to see all the UBC Building buddies again, especially the one who grew a beard, I'll always approve of that!
It was such a treat to be HOME again, the NY shows were great but there's nothing like a nice hometown Phil and Friends group hug at the Warfield.
So, with a full tour the band has gelled, we're in agreement on that one...although, Santa Barbara, first show of the tour, is still near and dear to me. Cold Rain and Snow>Gotta Serve Somebody is a tour highlight for me.
The thing that strikes me most about this Phil and Friends incarnation is how close to going over the edge most of the third set was. Warren and The Q did a lot of amazing things, but I never ever even came close to feeling like the train could derail, Warren always has a very firm grip on what's going down...Not so much with the current lineup. The third set last night really toed the line, I definitely felt moments of uncertainty, where was it all going? but I loved it, it's so true to the Grateful Dead ideals, the seat of the pants, anything can happen excitement...
Specifics to last night's sound, didn't hear much Molitz, he sounded nice and clear in NY, not sure why he's been so inaudible otherwise, it really seems if it's as simple as he's too low in the mix, they'd turn him up?
Steve Berlin--to echo Nick--he looked good doing it but I didn't hear him much at all.
And Larry, I dunno what to say about Larry. He's another one who looks good doing it, perfectly poised at all times and I know he's got skills on the strings, but his playing just doesn't ignite me the way others do...I've been waiting for a GREAT Larry show for a long time, but I dunno that I'll ever get from him. My favorite Larry moments were definitely during the acoustic set, and the encore on fiddle was great but still, I'm wanting more from Larry, he's all foreplay and no follow through. Oh well, I'll chalk it up to the overall band experience vs the featured soloist kinda thing...
Sounds like Jackies birthday will be one to remember for a long time!
<<< The third set last night really toed the line,I definitely felt moments of uncertainty, where was it all going? but I loved it, it's so true to the Grateful Dead ideals, the seat of the pants, anything can happen excitement...
<<<
Yes Emily.. i felt the same thing, too. There were a few moments i noticed Phil and Larry appeared baffled during the 3rd set. While the show was epic I can't help but to think the kids got a taste of something last night. Jackie appeared to be lost in space during is brief time on the keys. Phil is just stoned immaculate...amazing man of bass. Molo keeps time like a fine Swiss watch & Campbell has so much talent and still more to give. Playing on the edge is what makes the music exciting and keep thing interesting. Bravely go where no jam band has gone before...that final frontier thing...
Thanks Phil!!
>>>It was a delight to meet Hailey and her parents, a recent philzone convert from the JGe board, along with vanessaluvsjackie!
Thanks Emily! We were very happy to have met you as well. The scarf turned out amazing! Hopefully I'll catch ya again at some shows ... next ones will be a couple of Jackie's shows
too tired to type much but my 2 favorite moments were:
the jam out of half step and the absolute shreading during althea
WOW. What a great trip!!
Just back in Chico, picked up the kids and chillin' at home.
Loved putting faces to zoner names. Enjoyed meeting you all.
The show rocked.
IN PHIL WE TRUST.
...more to come when I can think clearly.
I wasn't at the show, but I did see 11/5 with Steve Berlin coming out for the first set. I totally agree with the people who said they couldn't hear him for the most part. He was pretty inaudible at the Nokia show, except when everyone stepped back and let him solo.
Guess who wins this battle: a baritone sax or Phil's bass bombs?
Here's a little note Jackie posted on his website...
NOVEMBER 28, 5:45PM
Thank you everyone for making my birthday very special.
I had a great time and was touched by all the love. Best birthday I've ever had. Much thanks to Phil and Jill for such a special experience.
Jackie
>>>Chest Fever/'Genetic Method'
would love to hear Mookie get back with the Friends for this one - he can really sound like Garth when he wants to. DNB is the best Band cover band ever imo (tho havent heard Last Waltz Ensemble yet - did i see somewhere that Mookie was playing with them?)
always thought "Genetic Method" was a lame title that some record exec (or maybe Robbie) came up with. to me it was always just garth>chest fever
i gotta say on the steve berlin sax that where i was standing, i could hear that thing growling something wonderful. i think those on stage could hear him too, because it took the jams to new and exciting places. hotness
what Roo said
What a fun show! My first time to see Phil at the Warfield and it was one to remember (even if we made a mistake and took the BART, missing the Help>Slip>Fanklin's and encores ...Grrrrr...lesson learned for this Bay area noob).
This show felt to me, like a surprise NYE show. Does that make sense?
This band is pretty well-suited for acoustic music and it was a real treat to get that 2nd set (7 sisters killed it after a beautiful FOTD).
My highlight (besides the aforementioned 7 sisters and a great sugaree) was the absolutely gut shaking, thumpin Shakedown > a very exploratory, very fun Althea. Wowzers.
Its been such a treat to move to the Bay area and get to see Phil at the Greek (the band is MUCH better now), the Warf and soon the Philmore!!!! See you there phans..
i was at 11/5-6, not last night...but i had to go near the stage to hear steve's sax on 11/5...i know he band could hear him, but it always amazes me they cant get the house sound down, its 2007 for god sake...its always why i try to get near...sound was good in the nokia, but best when closer, not rail close but 25 feet back.
Berlin comes in pretty loud & clear on the aud recording i have of 11/5. He's not an in-your-face type player like Osby say, but he adds a lot of color to the sound. Always been my favorite horn player for rock music
Wow, the show was amazing. It was my first time seeing Phil Lesh. I am very proud of Jackie; he is doing well with them. He's come so very far.
Emily: It was great fun meeting you. I loved the scarf as I'm sure Jackie did, too. That was nice of you!
>>>It was my first time seeing Phil Lesh<<<
Hang on tight; it can be a WILD ride!
http://phillesh.shop.musictoday.com/Product.aspx?c p=205_12240&pc=PLDD071127
thanks tony..that was really nice
what a great show...lots of polarity and familaraity (own word)
the 3rd set set me on wings of gold
i forgot myself ande was emersed in the church of music...
wut a beautiful feeling
to not know urself or anyone else
just the music
Nice show. Larry had volume and tone issues that kind of bothered me the whole night, Jackie was much louder and Larry's Les Paul/Marshall combo just wasn't given any love through the PA. I was in different parts of the audience and it was the same everywhere.
This band is hot and tight but has little subtlety; everything is raging all the time, which is fine, but I just kind of laughed during the slipknot; turning the G.D.'s mystical foreboding creep into something like an all star blues jam was pretty funny. Sorry, I never listen to Phil shows but see him from time to time.
That said, the Half-Step>Jam, Althea, Sugaree, Unbroken Chain, China Cat and the feedback jam in Dark Star were all totally great.
i loved the sorta hard rock power cords we got with chest fever...that wuz way kewl...it brought a whole nother vibe to the show...very unexpected
What a wonderful night!
For the record the "piano" on stage left was a
Hammond B-3 organ. Steve Berlin played it on the Bertha opener, & Jackie played it too.
Mr. Berlin then finished the first set on baritone sax. I have to agree he was buried in the house mix, but Jackie said they heard him
fine onstage...
That's interesting...I was on Larry's side on the first level off the dance floor and he was bleeding my ears all night. Like I said earlier...I couldn't hear a note from Steve Berlin's baritone sax. He was lost in the bottom end of Phil, Larry and Molo. Had he been blowing an alto or tenor sax he would have cut through the sound much better because he wouldn't be competing in the same sonic frequency.
Still it was a very compelling musical evening.
Alto sax still leaves him in the same range as the guitars. But, yeah, he was pretty much buried.
For the first set, I was maybe fifth "row" dead center on the floor, and the sound there was pretty awful -- Phil's bass a bit *too* dominant, and a horrendous echo from the back of the hall. Moved to the middle of the first section above the floor, just past the overhang from the balcony, and the sound was much better. Had no trouble hearing or distinguishing any of the musicians.
>>This band is hot and tight but has little subtlety; everything is raging all the time, which is fine, but I just kind of laughed during the slipknot; turning the G.D.'s mystical foreboding creep into something like an all star blues jam was pretty funny.
Couldn't have said that any better. They do show some dynamics in the acoustic set, but everything else is all out all the time. I was awfully tired before the start of the show, so it was all a bit much for me.
I'm trying my best to get into Larry, but he still doesn't totally click for me. Technically great, never misses a note, etc., but too much of a blues sensibility for my taste-- thought he was at his best on China Cat, which is especially hard to blues-ify, and for once he didn't try. He can play the spacey and/or jazzy stuff, but too often, for me, does not. Also, his stage manner makes him seem pretty distant a lot of the time; hard to get much of a read on his personality, so his music comes off a bit impersonal, to me.
Still, a very good show overall. Very well-played, Jackie brings a good energy to the stage, and, hey, four or five hours of Phil playing remains a most amazing gift.
so how were the Q Slipknots for you, Mike ?
Is there any photo's from the show, perhaps? I know I seen photographers!!!
check some of the other threads on here, VO, there are a handful with several photos of the show, including some of the crowd in front of the stage that might include you.
hint: go to the section that says "Other Stuff," rather than "show reviews." that's where everybody blabs incessantly about whatever, and there are threads titled "a few photos from last night," and "warfield updates" and "warfield rollcall," for starters, that should include photos. also check page of philzone.COM (not .org) where there often are links to photos.
I think I remember seeing the back of your head in some of the pics

^^some great shots here too^^
>>I'm trying my best to get into Larry, but he still doesn't totally click for me.
Try harder! ;)
Really wished I liked the guy's style, problem is that I don't hear a style at all. Still, overall I thought the show was very good, and have to admit that Larry does try hard and I enjoy hearing him on fiddle. With Phil and Molo driving the bus, it's hard to go wrong. Wonderful song arrangements, no complaints at all about Jackie Greene, that kid is great. Looking forward to MORE.
And I'll try harder next time too ~
Thanks a bunch.. No, I didn't have a feather one. Hailey and I had the, "Happy Birthday" one's...v
Nancy have you listened to larry's performance on the ps during Stella Blue from 11/10 , and his straight out interpretation of Garth Hudsons Genetic Method before Chest Fever at the Warfield. Both show his style and ability to blow just about any other guitar player out there away.imo only I am sure. Like Phil says he is THE MASTER. Another really good example of his style would be his performance in Camden just check out from Mountains of the Moon on....... he played the cittern during the into and out of Jams and it is just incredible. He is just so much more than just a guitarist.
Oh I had a great time at the show. I thought the Shakedown> Althea was off the hook with top honors going to an extreamly hot Althea. The acoustic Peggy'o was a really nice treat. Not to mention the great version of unbroken Chain and the really hot franklins....Like I said had a GREAT Time.
This band is very good at what they do. I really don't see them playing a BAD night they are to good for that. So now we get really good to great shows as a regular diet from these guys. What's to complain.
They need more material Rainbow!
So Hard to Fnd My Way HAS NO PLACE in a P&F set. Bubblegum CRAP
>>>So Hard to Fnd My Way HAS NO PLACE in a P&F set. Bubblegum CRAP
Agreed--sounds like the opening to welcome back kotter.
I'm so gone is a great fit for P&F though
I believe all JG songs fit well into the PandF set list..Own opinion, any way. They should do more. However, it is a Phil Lesh and Friend show..Not a Jackie Greene band show, right...
>>Both show his style and ability to blow just about any other guitar player out there away.imo only I am sure.
I agree that Larry has amazing talent and ability, but, again, his style hasn't quite clicked for me, at least with Phil. Thought he was great with Dylan, and his acoustic stuff is amazing on Levon Helm's latest recording. I thought the fiddle tune before ripple was the highlight of the acoustic mini-set. But his tendency to lean on blues-y scales on what are usually more spacey, jazzy gd numbers has yet to really float my boat.
I agree that Jackie is a great talent. I especially like it that this combination can field a Band-like lineup -- two keyboards, one guitar. But I also agree that Can't Find My Way sorta blows -- kinda Billy Joel-ish. Yeesh. All of the other Jackie tunes I've heard them do are great though; and I do recall there were more than one Jerry song, let alone Bobby songs, that I coulda lived without back in the day...
This was a great show! Just curious, has anyone seen this posted online anywhere? I have checked various sites (bt.etree, archive, tradersden, etc) and don't see it up yet. Is it just me or has it not been posted for sharing?
Great show, a night to remember. Band was tight with a killer setlist. I havent seen it for download...I think we have to pay for this one
I dont mind paying but its always nice to have that AUD to hear the crowd and bring back the memories! :D
I dont mind paying either, its supporting the music we love
i don't mind paying either, but those of us w/o a high-speed connexion don't have that option, nor any legitimate way to get a copy. I wish they'd offer lossless and/or audio on disc for mail-order
http://phillesh.shop.musictoday.com/Product.aspx?c p=205_12240&pc=PLDD071127
I bought the DSBD from Phil and downloaded the juicy FLAC's and it was absolutely worth the $15.99. The recording is incredible as is the performance. You can even hear Molo yell "all the bitches in the house say yeah," after he fires off that last run in "Help on The Way." You will need the DSBD to really enjoy the stellar acoustic set, great stuff!
Monkey Tunes has surfaced, thanks for taping!

And thanks to the Philzone, where there is newbie life after 40! I felt like a youngin' at this show!
My sympathies to the East Bay Heads who had to leave after Unbroken Chain or swim across the Bay to get home that night.
While NYC got 10 nights, (I got 3 of them) this was an epic one for the Westies. This show had all the energy of the Nokia run with the hometown vibe that only comes in SF. Surprise Acoustic Set was perfect in every way, as we were treated to Phil on the upright and the Master Larry Campbell on MORE than guitar. Listing Larry Campbell as just guitar is a bit light! How about Pedal Steel, Mandolin, Violin, Dobro, and honky vocals on Deep Elem Blues? And, that Chest Fever in the 1st set was screaming. Jackie held is own all night, as he has all year. This boy has earned his stripes, and what a way to spend your Golden Birthday! They no doubt surprised him with the cake, he is still wondering if they are going to go back into “Mexican Girl!”
Other highlights: Energetic and bouncy Bertha opener, smoldering guitar and vocals from Jackie on Sugaree, solid Shakedown, BALOON DROP, loved Molitz’s keyboard wizardry on Unbroken Chain, Phil’s growl after singing the Help On The Way line “without love in a dream it will never come true,” & then Molo’s fireworks on the last solo during Help; on the soundboard after he rifles off that last run, you can hear him yell “all the bitches in the house say YEAH,” and we top it all off with the tender Brokedown as the back end of a sweet double encore.
This performance will stand up to anything on this entire tour and with this lineup thus far, and is most worthy of the 4 CD's to stock it. Get it, learn it, live it, love it...
A buddy just sent me this show. Love that "Chest Fever"!!
