Have a great show Brother. You're bus will make it just fine..."One MOre Saturday Night" "Thats Right"
we hear that unbroken chain (opened) passenger and dark star (closed)were all in the 1st set. This is unconfirmed
Just got home. I couldn't get in tonight, so I hung out with the other Heads under the Observatory. There were about a hundred up there. Security was *not* happy. Kind of a chatty crowd, but when Security tried to sweep us out saying the Police were coming, most of the chatty folks left and the rest of us enjoyed the show. I was driving home when it occured to me that I was the oldest person on that hill. I'm 31. Ugh.
Great folks up there. One guy gave me his burrito, saying, "we all have to eat." So kind. Many travelers.
The setlist seemed a little better than last night's. (Not complaining about last night). No repeats from last night.
Before the encore, Phil announed to the crowd, "God, I love Berkeley!" The city has declared tomorrow (Sunday) "Phil Lesh Day." Not sure what it means, but it's got to be nice.
Anyway, great show tonight. It was a new experience for me, hanging around outside the show with the travelers.
*REALLY* looking forward to the Clapyool / Lesh show tomorrow!
Make that *Claypool.*
Back from the show and what a great show it was. The weather was postcard perfect blue skies with whispy cirrus clouds, warm with no humidity. The kind of day that intices people to move to the Bay Area. I arrived early. This time I brought some poster board and went on the search for "leshphan" and "gentleben". I found "leshphan"after about 5 minutes. I was walking around the area in front of the throne chairs, holding this poster board above my head with their names on it (one on each side). Dave (aka leshphan) responded when I was about 10 feet in front of him. We had a laugh about that, chatted a little and I said that after the Disco Biscuits set I would bring the Phil giveaway cds so we could pass them out together. I never found gentleben but I believe everyone in the Greek recognizes his name by now! So Ben if you're out there get in touch.
I sat out in the same area as on Friday - about 10 feet to stage right of the tapers. I also met Charlie Miller (taper for the Crusader Rabbit show). Again, the sound you should hear on the tapes when they are available should be excellent. Everyone was nicely behaved and quiet around the taper section. Disco Biscuits were good - I have never heard them until now.
At the break while setting the stage up for Phil I brought along the 9 cds and handed them out around the area where leshphan was parked (throne chairs on stage right). Again it was amusing. People are really suspicious that there has to be a catch, but eventually they realize that its on the up and up.
On to the Phil show. I'm not a "setlist" keeper but it went something like Jam > Unbroken Chain > Wheel > ... Passenger.. > Bird Song. Only one break in the first set. Passenger more than smoked. The flame throwers and napalm were out on this one. Everyone in the audience was completely jazzed - lots of grins and exchanges of "boy that song was great" looks. Again we had the Mountain Jam for about a minute or 2 and maybe a Lovelight tease thrown in by Warren in the 1st set.
Oh yes, I forgot to say that the singing both nights has been really top notch. Phil sounds very on, not at all tired and he is singing many of the songs.
Second set started with She Said, then I lost track but songs played I believe included Mountains on the Moon, Other One, Night of a 1000 Stars. Encore was Box of Rain with a special comment by Phil thanking Candace for the most superb lights. Set 2 was one long smooth flowing cohesive chunk-o-music. The playing by everyone was as good as it gets. Great ensemble playing. The first set seemed more "danceable" while the 2nd set had some very intriguing psychedelic jams. Not necessarily fast guitar riffs but more into the overall sound of the quintet. I can't come up with the right descriptive words. One thing I noticed is that Warren would do a riff, then Herring, Phil, Rob and John would each repeat it with some slight change so that they developed this unusual echoy sound. Lots of sustained notes so many of the jams had a more sparse sound than usual. I personally enjoy this because they use these sparse bits to start to layer the music gradually until you realize they are into the next song. Very smooth segues with transitions between slower or more mental playing into the faster more danceable playing.
I'm off to sleep. Heopfully when I see the set list I can add a few more comments in the morning.
Thanks for the sweet reviews! Through these in depth descriptions, I can visualize the show. Can hardly wait myself, to see the hottest music of the times!
Man...Wish I was at that show..Love to hear Unbroken Chain...Hope all enjoyed..Peace.
Thank You Matthew Vernon for another *Random Act of Kindness*. Your positive evergy may cause a ripple effect for the rest of the tour! :*)
tonight's historic show at the greek can be summerized as breathtaking as warren stepped up and phil soared with molo driving the stars cosmic.. tears of a clown jams throughout- you can't always get what you want jam and the intrapa jam>luna jam was beyond words.. can it get better than this!!
How was Warren's new song?
first off, Matt, it was a pleasure meeting you, and kirsten and I really enjoyed joining you on your random acts of kindness.. Twas funny to see the looks on people's face's, first was 'whats this guy up to' then,'wow, he's really giving us disc' the suprise and joy were great to see. Matt, the spreader of the joy! The new Warren was very deep and powerful, a keeper for sure. In the second set there was a huge 'Sympathy for the Devil' jam, reggae style. Very long and sweet. I cant belive its not on the list. Cant wait to get Wier'd today!
The "women in the white robes" was dancing on stage right this night only she had a red patterned dress and patterned scarves. Phil's music was so powerfull that when I looked into the handicapped area all of the wheel chairs were vacant - and I'm not kidding. Phil's music moved everyone last night. Its 10AM so I have to jump in the car and off to the 3rd show of the run and the last of the summer tour for me:( Hope to meet some more Philzoner's today.
Matt
I certainly wish that those of you who enjoyed last nights show would have shared the crack pipe with me. After the Disco Biscuits left, it was all downhill from there. I was so excited to see Phil's new band, but c'mon folks, this is tired rock'n'roll with very little if any innovation at all.
Find a new hobby, a new band, go to Thailand. This evening proved to me that The Dead is now most certainly DEAD. R.I.P.
-Bretster
Have fun at the Backstreet Boys bretster! Too bad for you. lol
Hey Bretster, if you don't like it, don't go see it. Novel idea huh? Have fun in Thailand, more tix for me and my phamily....
Kevin,
Fact is, I won't go see it, now that I know what it has become. I have seen many a Dead show, & some brilliant Phil & Friends shows, but I was very disapointed to see this band.
-bretster
Bretster,
Why are you telling us this?? Everyone reads this area of the board to read reviews not you complaining. Sorry but please go somewhere else.
Thanks.
Can someone give me some feedback on mountains of the moon who sings it and what is tne tempo? thanks
Mountains of the Moon:
Phil sings it, nice and slow, thick and intense!
What's up with Bretster?
Well, if he meant what he said, anyone who enjoyed the show was smokin crack. Maybe he ran out of crack, so he couldn't enjoy the show.hehe
That kind of comment makes that a worthless review. Let's hear some intelligence to back that opinion.
If there is any band you need crack to enjoy, it's those Biscuit fools.
I hope you get the clap during your next trip to Thailand.
ouch!
two steps backwards for the Zonians
reasonable minds may differ without suffering a burning sensation upon urination
look at the bright side, the dude said he's not coming back
that should be good enough for all of us
see ya
brick
Ok Gmack, you're right about that..Tried to hold back but couldn't. Crack-n-Phil just don't go together. My defenses got the best o me!
>I was so excited to see Phil's new band, but c'mon folks, this is tired rock'n'roll with very little if any innovation at all.

are you a politician?
they opened with Unbroken Chain & did Mountains of the Moon as I stood atop the peak of the Greek, with our beautiful pale, growing goddess rising above me whilest Phil sang for all of us.
YAY Phil
Hey there Jill! Long time no see, the boards not the same w/o ya! :*)
Did you see all 3 shows? What was your fav?
What do you mean, crack doesn't go well with Phil shows? I'm very surprised to see such a close minded view on the zone. don't let one bad crackhead give us all a bad name!! Don't generalize, "once in a while you can get shown the light in the strangest of places..." I love to smoke rocks and listen to Phil! Theres no better feeling in the world than Phil busting into an eleven with the hubba force flowin' through your veins! So please, keep an open mind and don't discriminate against dead/crackheads, were full of surprises!! ROCK on!!
I enjoy the Dosco Biscuits, personally. In my opinion they are a decent young band.
I mean Disco Biscuits, of course. But Cryptical do you trash any and every young band that comes along? Do you have to be 50+ to rock in your world? If so, that's cool, but you can't blame the kids for trying.
I can imagine that Phil Lesh might be insulted by your eager dismissal of bands that he supposedly hand-picked to share the bill with him this summer.
>But Cryptical do you trash any and every young band that comes along?
Phil, pick Menudo please.
Dude
you insulted Phil?
thats whack
as your pennance, you must tour with Ratdog and try and sell 4 extras ( that you paid face for ) in the lots across small time America
that'll learn ya
Gmack-Pricless responce
btw~did anyone mention the 10 mins of "can't always get whatcha want" instro @ the beginning of the 2nd set!?!?!?
& HOWDY DeadicatedMamma!!!
(:
you sweet chick, you
I was fortunate enough to catch the 6/30 show as I was in the Bay area on business, and lucky me... PHIL'S AT THE GREEK! My first show at this legendary venue, and it gave rise to a lot of reflection on all the lives that have been affected by these types of special occasions over the decades.
In response to Bret, let me tell you that I was straight for this show, yet this band absolutely moved me. I must agree that Phil's singing was very good, and, yes, "Passenger" was a scorcher'! Too many highlights to mention, but it was a nice treat to travel all the way from Colorado and get a "Rider" to close the second set. I can't wait for the Red Rocks shows!
I'm sure Jerry would be proud as hell of Phil and the boys.
Ouch, are you guys kind? Remember we are entitled
to our own stupid opinions. My stupid opinion of the 6/30 show was mixed. I loved the 1st set.
Thought the Wheel, Passenger, Birdsong was smokin.
Hated the 2nd set. It reminded me of one of those
Terrapins from the old days where the music would lose focus, get lost and slow, and the show would
just wither away. I was impressed with the vocals,
the best of any of the Friends that I have heard.
Really enjoyed the harmony. To the taper who gave me a cd from 6/29 1st set, much gratitude.
Did anyone notice that Warren shredded one of his guitar strings sometime during Other One/IKYR jam. He played magnificently with one less string for most of the song. This band is QUINTETESSENTIAL!
I must say I agree with your review Louis (Quindlen). Saturday's first set was great but the second was a snoozer. The jamming seemed totally unfocused and nobody seemed to know which direction they were going. It seemed like noone could get on the same page. Friday night and the first set on Saturday were great, but Saturday's second set was a disappointment.
I live near the Canadian boarder, and that unbroken chain made it all worth the journey to the Peoples Republic of Berkeley. That was one of the Phil songs I only dreamed of hearing.
hey folks....,just gotta say how much i love this line-up.....unfortunately for me, after jerry died i gradually lost interest in looking for "the Magic" we all used to bask in at the shows......im not to impressed with some of the offshoots....but i have to say the magic is back !!I am looking forward to seeing the atlanta show (godwilling) these sbds are giving me new inspiration....as a formerly "washed-up" musician, im finding my groove again....ive been a longtime fan of warren and am so proud to see him tearin it up the way he does and just laying down those vocals, jerry would be proud....and as for the rest.....jimmy is a monster guitar player...rob is ticklin those ivories and laying down those vocals like a pro.....john is freakin melodic genius on the kit and phil is playin as well as ever.....vocals still need somethin....but thats just phil......and as for all you naysayers.....just give these guys a little time......they are already as tight as the dead ever were.....well at least a little more consistent......anywaze you believers out there know the deal.....this is the best thing goin!! take care brothers and sisters and ill see y'all at a show or two....HUGZ and NUGZ for all!!!!!!!
I think Phil is unaware of the needs of a crack smoker, he may have known at one point, but currently it seems that he is for the zone.
Well, My alternator worked well, I showed up a
little late paked the Twotone primer VW on
telegraph. The place was buzzing from
beginning to end, I though I saw Chelsea
Clinton. I was dancing the whole night I yelled
out really loud during the whole show and
during bird song, The music stopped and you
can hear was me! And Phil says "all I know is
like a bird within HIM sang" referring to me
and was looking right at me with a BIG SMILE"
and the crusader rabbit looking soo happy
chillin there on stage, If I had carck I would
have smoked it too... only some happier-ness
KIND to hit rewind on that show... It was the
baddest rider passenger, the wheel, I had a
GREAT time thanks Phil... You are the
jamminest... next stop Rat-DOg in Chula Vista!
Peace to all the cool heads down here doin
