I'm meeting some Phriends before the Sunday Orpheum show around 5:00. Can anyone recommend a good spot to meet that has good beer, is realtively easy to find, has parking nearby (maybe a lot that's safe to party in?), and won't be so packed that we can't find each other?
there is no lot to party in, dont get arrested. Parking around the corner on Washington in a garage for about $4 for the night. Dont try the beantown pub, crowded like a virgin at a rodeo.
Stop on by the New England Organ Bank Donor Awareness table at all the shows, say hello and grab a donor card. See you all there.
The rock bottom brewery is about 8 blocks from the orpheum heading south on tremont st. towards the theatre district and chinatown. Good brews, o.k. atmosphere.

Amazing?? Please Huck!
Great to see you once again. Fun show with lots of Warren.
It's clear he was feeling better. Had more Warren in the frist set than three nigths in Chi-town.
I'm starting to like this town and looks like we will have at least three more years here.
Huck if you want to share some time on Monday call my cell!!
Just back from Boston, on this beautiful Sunday, uh Monday. Great show. Could be the show of the run!! Warren is back out front and sweet cover tune selections. Sunshine, LSD, Low Spark, Mr. Fantasy!!! Everyone played great, Rob got to sing a few times! Nice jammy Eyes with Rob and Phil together doing the vocals. Good jams, including a couple of space jams throughout. Peace and enjoy,
Bobby

well, i'm not sure who owns wharf rat, but Warren was singin' like there was no tomorrow. if he had a cold, we didn't see it in boston.............
mason's blew me out.........

the show is fully uploaded to Zone Radio... had the 1st set playing over night... got the 2nd set up.. will be hearing it thru the next rotation (around 10am est)......
What a show! Best PLQ show I've seen yet! "Mason's Children" was absolutely smoking, the highlight of the first set. And believe me, that is saying something because there were many great moments in the set.
Second set...wow! To hard to pick a highlight but "Bertha" and "Wharf Rat" back-to-back might be it. "The Real Thing" was the best version I have ever heard. Beautiful.
Phil looked more animated than usual last nite. He really was having a great time up there, it showed. I love it! Can't wait for tonite's show...
Bertha took the house down, plain and simple. Warren took the reign all night, Jimmy didnt lead much at all, it was Warren's night.
TaperRob hope that was not you front row mezzanine because that mic was getting rocked from the balcony shaking so damn much.
I had one of those box seats on the side of the stage and being right on the bar I could see everything but the sound was so loud! Will be rockin again tonight, see you all there!
Oh I love work after what was one of the best out of 30+ Phil shows I have seen. I am busy at work so I will give a review a little later. All I know is I spoke with Warren when he was arriving in a van to The Orpheum and I asked him if he was feeling better? He said oh yeah! A little better & better everyday day! And man oh man did it show. More after I get caught up.... What a show!!!!!! Less than 10 hours until the next YAHTZEE
I have to agree with Huck about the Wharf!!!!
MY GAWD! Warren had tears streaming down my face with his true grit and intensity he brings to that song! I was left a weeping mess!!!
The Bertha was stellar and it was amazing to walk outta there having seen songs I've never seen the Q do!

HOLY SHIT! MOLO was full force!!! I love MOLO! Have I ever said that before????!!!!
Had a great time last night and it was sooooo awesome to see the Zoner crew (as always!)

When you've been DEAD 8 years like Jerry, you haven't been doing much singing lately......
Jerry on tape or Warren live?
I'll take Warren live myself.
Time to move on, folks.....
Ok, Mr Bradfest, OKAY
Warfield was AMMMMMAZING but by THIS band I am always amazed.
And re the rat
sorry, disbelievers, I think Mr. Haynes owns it now.
And while I understand that Jerry created it, and I BOW DEEPLY
I do think we have a sitch of the man who improves upon the mastah
ala Hendrix Watchtower vs. Dylan
just saw the setlist. i NEED this show on disc. who's got it and how can i get it?
hmmm. interesting comments on "owning" a song. i wouldn't say that anyone "owns" these songs (ex. Warren "owning" "Wharf Rat"). i just think there are different interpretations of the music. that to me is part of the beauty of music like The Dead's. for instance, Molo is a much more powerful and dynamic drummer than the combo. of Kreutzmann and Hart. that doesn't necessarily make him better, it's just a different artist adding his musical personality to the songs. that's my 2 cents...
My mouth dropped when I looked at the 11/23 set list this morning. From the comments here, sounds like the Q were definitely ON last night.
Warren is the man now. Thank the powers that he is playing in the band. He nails the Jerry tunes. His version of Wharf Rat has serious soul.
I have to feel that Jerry would be very pleased that Phil has stepped up and moved the magick forward into the new millennium, and with such authenticity, energy, and so much of "the unspoken thing."
To rejoice in what we are blessed to have now is no disrespect to Jerry's legacy, or Great Jerry's Ghost. We love you forever Jerry! Unlimited devotion and thanks for a real good time!...
That said, how grand to have Warren up-front and putting his heart and amazing skill fully into the job.
Now, if only he was also playing with the Dead on a regular basis, then we would really be cooking. The interplay between Warren and Jimmy and Phil redefines Guitar Gods.
It would be swell if Warren joined the Dead, on the other hand, I'd rather hear the Q any night of the week.
Setlist shmetlist - some of the best stuff from last night is listed as ">" or "jam>"
I've been lurking here for years and I thought I'd give something back, so...
I've got extras for tonight. Whoever can meet me before the show and pay face.

>>>> MY GAWD! Warren had tears streaming down my face with his true grit and intensity he brings to that song! I was left a weeping mess!!!
Same thing happened to me at the beacon during a wharf rat. Cried my little heart out.
Great, great show last night, the guys are really fluid right now. Will post a three night review when I have time . . . but suffice it to say the Q is back and better than ever.
Did anyone notice the full on Hey Jude Finale(without vocals)during/after the Mr. Fantasy closing jam? When is Warren going to bust that out?! Also there seemed to be a pretty well defined jazzy intro played before Dear Mr. Fantasy that at least hinted at my favorite things. Has the Quintet played one since the Warfield '02? Man,would that be awesome! There also seemed to be a very familiar eastern-sounding jam pre-NFA. Kinda like the pre-Inspiration>Terrapin jam/Blues for Allah jam. What up with that? Is this the tour?
>That said, how grand to have Warren up-front and putting his heart and amazing skill fully into the job.
Uh..didn't he pick the ABB over P&F as his main gig aside from Mule??..I mean, for a guy who is replacing Jerry (for many of you) he picked Dead music as his THIRD choice.
stepping on Jerry in order to chat up Warren is unacceptable
>...for a guy who is replacing Jerry (for many of you)...<
Jerry can never be replaced. The grief of his fans that he grew old so fast that he died young can never be soothed.
The point is that we have a new group of journeymen, led by Phil, who are moving the music forward, and for many of us who feared that the magick had died with Jerry, well these developments make us very happy and very high.
Uh, gentlemen, the show! The f***in show! Awesome, this show was off the map! Great jams, great song selections. Wish I was going to all 3 Boston, but some people gotta work for a livin'! I'll be Oakdale, and I'm betting it won't be like the last show at Oakdale! Can't wait to hear this one, might be the show of the week! Peace all, and ENJOY!!!
>The point is that we have a new group of journeymen, led by Phil, who are moving the music forward<
With FM rock staples and 25+ year old GD songs?
Maybe when they form a true identity with 30-40 original songs...
Anyhoo, glad you cats dig it.
Great time last night at the show. no pat down on the way in, but not one whiff of KB inside the entire night. more blue shirt goons with head sets than i've ever seen at an Orpheum show.
it was nice seeing Fritz and Huck outside and FrankL too.
tonight being my 1st show of this tour was a nice place to start and the band seemed to be healthier than people mentioned in Chicago.
the show felt a little uneven for me, maybe it was the truffle ;)
the cover tunes were done well, Phil's vocals weren't cringe inducing, Warren was on all night.
i have to admit i was unimpressed with the Wharf Rat, the vocals were done well and the playing was fine, but the arrangement is like the Phil Terrapin and i like the original arrangement better.
my favorite part of the Bertha was watching the mic stand hanging from the front of the balcony. the entire balcony seemed to be moving about 5 inches in the middle and the mic stand was hanging out dead center and looked like it was on a pogostick.
the help>slip>11>franklin's was worth the price of admission, i wish they had used some of that energy earlier in the set.
WTF is up with the tour flu, it sounds like a Tuberculosis ward around the theater. people hacking up all sorts of crap and coughing up into the air like they are some sort of viral fountain.
cover your mouths people ;)
Lunch time, thought I'd chime in a few more comments.
Hey Jude vocal is close, the instrumental jam out of DMF was awesome, I was singing it out loud with visions of Brent dancing in my head.
What's with the raised fist in salute? All the band members did it before and after the show, also the crew, seems to be a solidarity gesture to me. Beautiful, the Q, 5 members, 5 fingers make the fist . . . hmmm . . . these guys are operating as one cohesive unit, no doubt about it.
Jimmy needs a tad more volume in the mix, of course it could have been the back row of the downstairs doing that, but Warren was plenty loud (no complaints on that). Can't wait for tonight.
What time did the show start and end last night???
No one here is dissin Jerry. I really enjoy Warren's version of Wharf Rat as well. I actually feared that I would witness the unveiling of a Dead version with either Bob or Joan singing...the Warfield return shows I attended made that all better. Warren's vocals are so soulful, on about every version I've heard of older quintet stuff or post Warfield Sept '03. Check out the Roseland Ballroom spring '01 version. That said, I would still take any Jerry version of Wharf Rat(even with Vince) over even the best Warren Versions. I'm actually hoping for the return of the Warren Standing on the Moon sometime this tour. I saw the Allstate Arena SOTM, and the Somerset one, and was left sighing because I've heard the Warren Warfield '02 version that blew me away it was so good. The Dead/Bobby left me missing Jerry more than ever. It was still good to hear it and Bobby kept it together, but that one might be best left with Warren at this point as well. How about the Phil China Doll, or the Days Between? Does anyone think Phil will ever sing those ones again?
show started about 7:20-7:30 it ended at 11:20
I also heard a small Close Encounters quote just prior to Slipknot!>Franklin's, just after the eleven. Listen closely.
This was a great show, but if you have mezzanine section tickets at the Orpheum, be prepared for the dance police to keep you in your seat. Apparantly they have a rule against standing/dancing in that section (not noted on any signs or on the ticket), and they enforced it all night. Really p!ssed me off at first, but then I got into the show and let it go.
Just sent the message below to the only email address I could dig up for the owner of the venue, corporate megalith Clear Channel. I'm sure it will be about as productive as p!ssing into the wind, but I still had to do it. I also cc'd GDTS since I got the tix through them...

TO: MANAGER, ORPHEUM THEATER IN BOSTON
RE: SEATING IN MEZZ SECTION
I attended a concert at the Orpheum Theater in Boston last night (11/23/03) and had mezz section seats (the mezz basically consists of the 1st three rows of the balcony). I was shocked to learn after the music started that the mezz section had a rule against standing/dancing. This rule was not noted on any signs in the venue, box office, ticketing website, nor on the tickets themselves.
I did not go to the concert expecting to be forced by rude security personnel to stay seated when the rest of the venue (except of course for the three rows of the mezz) are standing and dancing. Had I known that my "best available seats" came with this restriction, I would have opted for another seat location. The whole experience significantly detracted from my enjoyment of the performance.
I asked a couple of non-security venue staff about this policy during the setbreak (security wouldn't talk about it, too busy being tough guys I guess), and was told twice that it was because they were trying to keep the balcony's "bounce" to a minimum. I was shocked to hear this as the reason. Yes, the balcany was really swaying at a few points last night, but I've experienced that in other venues as well (without threat of ejection if I stood up like everyone else in the venue was doing). I too believe in safety first, but if the difference between the balcony collapsing or not depends on whether the people in the first three rows in the mezz are sitting or standing, than what the heck were we doing there in the first place? If the venue is truely that unstable, I would think it would be in Clear Channel's best interest (not to mention the interest of the patrons who are being put at risk) to either not fill those particular seats or correct the problem before a tradegy that could result in injury and/or loss of life (not to mention expensive litigation) occurs.
Sincerely,
OK, this is my FIRST EVER post from WORK (so fire me dammit!) - but HAD to go on and say how freakin' AWESOME last night was! That's saying A LOT coming from me - who was routinely dissin' pretty much every show I've seen since - well, since the last time they played these venues! They were just IN ANOTHER ALTERNATE REALITY last night - the reality of THE ORPHEUM/ TOWER/ BEACON!!!! Don't know what it is, but these venues just RIP IT OUT OF 'EM!!! I was at the Warfield in Sept and just heard 2 or 3 random discs of Denver/Chicago from my buddy who went there - NOTHING EVEN CLOSE to last night!!! The intensity of the jamming, the ferocity of the rockin' tunes, OMFUG!!! As I said before, right up there with the '01 fall tour shows at these venues, and the last time I've seen music this good was back then. Of course being the critic that I am, I will say I thought the 2nd set was a tad weak from the moment the jam out of Mr Fantasy (fantastic version BTW) was heading into Hard 2 Handle (man that woulda been sweet) but then dropped into NFA/Bertha. Those 2 were mere crowd pleasing rockers, while loud and rockin' it felt like they were on auto pilot. The subsequent Wharf Rat was merely OK - the one song that was better at the Warfield - then they got back into it big time w/the jamming following. But the ENTIRE 1st set and the rest of the 2nd set was pretty much TAKE NO PRISONERS!!!! DEATH FROM ABOVE!!!! Not to mention the double encore AFTER the show had ALREADY run past the 3 hours of music mark. I was chuckling to myself about the last time I'd seen a "Real Thing" encore - at that PATHETIC Merriweather show in summer '02 - I can hardly believe this is the SAME BAND!!! What a freakin' difference! WOW WOW WOW!!! The 1st set - that Wheel-Low Spark-Wheel-SICK jamming-Eyes-MORE SICK JAMMING-Masons (with an INCREDIBLE melt-down/build-up) - plus the INCREDIBLE sound from the front row mezz w/gonzo taping - and they don't let anyone stand and dance there 'cause of the rockin' balcony (yeah, I agree w/that - wouldn't want the place to collapse in the middle of the show - even if I'm on top!) - so all you tapers downstairs, COME ON UP!!! There's PLENTY of empty seats to go around! OK, dammit, I gotta go to a meeting - then back to it for 10 more shows! Yowza! OH, and thanx to Chris for the Tix swap - dude, I didn't mean to blow you off - taping was a necessary hassle - I'll em you tomorrow - cd's WILL be on the way! Over & Out!
Oh, and extra dibs to the Phil/Rob dual lead vocals on both Eyes and Franklin's - makes these tunes SO MUCH BETTER!
Show review...... Got in a little early to see if Rob would sign a couple of pictures from San Fran March of 02 with him and a couple of my friends which he kindly did. 2 of my christmas presents are done "Thanks Rob" Had a great seat 2nd row aisle left center right in front of Jimmy and Rob. The Place had some intensity in it. I did notice a few people getting tossed for smoking so I do think they are enforcing that but I didn't get checked going in at all. Anyway onto the show. 7:22 they come out and start into a 8 minute jam with sunshine of your love teases in there and then a nice 14 minute Sunshine of your love and Warren just belting out the vocals he's definately feeling better.> L.S.D this band is tight and you can tell they are enjoying themselves. The Wheel > Low Spark Verse 3 > The Wheel was absolutely amazing the transformation was incredible> Built to Last hard to not have the eyes water up>Nice Jam>Eyes of the world>Mason's Children I turned around and was watching the balcony go up and down.... what a great 1st set closer 8:43 and what an amazing 1st set! From start to finsh not one blemish in my opinion.
Set II
9:30 A healthy set break..... I understand why now
Jam> Dear Mr.Fantasy (with Hey Jude Teases) had the crowd right where it left it.....crazy>Not Fade Away, over and over again great vibe between the band and crowd>Bertha the balcony was really moving on this and barraco just nailed it to a T. Wharf Rat (I know that the Liiiiiiiiiiiife, I'm living's no good) Warren!!!!!!!!!!!!>Jam>Help on the Way>Slipknot>Millenium Jam>The Eleven> Slipknot>Franklin's Tower.........That is some of the hardest dancin I have ever done in my life it was so phucking sweet everynote everyword every everything was just right on the money!!!! 11:08
Encore: The Real Thing >Nice Warren double encore because it was Warren's night!!! Man did he shine! This ain't no no show this ain't no nervous break down and it sure as hell ain't the time to let the fool decide! Into the Mystic Thank you Warren! What an amazing show!!! I have no idea how they are going to match that this evening but I'll take whatever they play even if they decided to play that show all over again every song that would be fine by me....... Thank you to the "Q" for an amazing evening. Looking forward to this evening just 4 more hours of work and off to Beantown....... YAHTZEE
HELLO ITS 1 PM ON 24TH GREAT SEATS JUST RELEASED FROM TICKETMASTER FOR TOWER JUST GOT PIT EEE AND DD ORCH THESE ARE 1 ST AND 4TH ROW THANK ME LATER GET EM NOWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!
Anyone else hear that strong Playin' tease in the first jam or was my head on sideways ??
The Warfield Wharf Rat was better.
After a 5:30 a.m. flight out of Boston I’m back sitting here at work.
This may sound strange, but the jam between the BTL and Eyes was probably my favorite part of the 1 set. This was a very tight and focused jam. If you just looked at the song selection without know which set it could easily be confused with a second set.
I’m not sure if I agree with Fluffhead’s statement “Warren took the reign all night, Jimmy didnt lead much at all, it was Warren's night.” While Warren dominated most of the vocal duties from where I was sitting, Row NN ten rows back on Jimmy’s side, I thought Jimmy was a major contributor to this show. Jimmy has a quiet confidence that I absolutely love. It’s a blast watching the eye contact that he has at times with Rob. There has never really been a lead guitarist in the traditional sense between Jimmy and Warren, but now it seems like there’s more give and take between the two this fall. Jimmy also seems to be playing few notes. I’m glad Jimmy switch to the PRS when he plays with the Dead, but I sort of miss the strat in this line up.
The house lights were still up when the bad returned from the second set, which made for a strange opening. Molo was waving his arms to the crowd for the crowd to cheer.
Some may give this show a more glowing review based on the song selection than it deserves. I’m not sure how this show would match up to some of the Fall 01 or Summer 02 shows. I have to give it another listen over time to tell. Overall the show had a very strong set list and was played confidently.
Huck, thanks for the color on last night. and I already felt that way about wharf rat. folks need to be flexible in their thinking; maybe someday we'll here some other band play wharf rat, and for a time, it will be 'their' wharf rat
can't wait to par-tee next week here in NYC
perhaps that's when the hey jude comes out?
skins, you dare show yourself today? see you on the sports threads...
Fajitas& Ritas will start to fill about 5 to 5:30 as people get out of work.
last night by 6 there was a wait to get a table but just tell them you are meeting someone at the bar and they let you walk in.
>>>Inheritance laws.....
When you've been DEAD 8 years like Jerry, you haven't been doing much singing lately......
Jerry on tape or Warren live?
I'll take Warren live myself.
Time to move on, folks.....
RIGHT ON, Bucky.
This one now has a RIGHTEOUS performer, and I can not think of any other living being out there who performs Jerry tunes so appropriately and so well.
There's an aspect to Warren that harmonizes perfectly with Jerry's soul.
Wharf Rat: 4/4/02; 9/1/02; 11/15/03; 11/23/03?
Stands with the best of em ever.
Have a listen to the 9-27-03 version.
Hate to say it, but...same old same old. C'mon Phil mix some shit up.
So, was I dreaming, or did they tease the Stray Cat Strut? I know I wasn't dreaming that Hey Jude tease. Has PLQ ever played this before? It's going to be amazing when they do. I can't make tonight's show. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Jude on Tuesday.
>>Hate to say it, but...same old same old. C'mon Phil mix some shit up.
Grrrrrrr.... I'm holding back on what I REALLY want to say.....
To each their own.
southern man riff too, I just noticed in the post-wharf rat jam
RIGHT, PAUL!!!! Southern Man. I heard the riff at the show and it was that thing when you're trying to sing the rest of the song in your head to get to the lyrics that will clue you in....I never got there.....better to listen to the show I was at. I knew someone would tell me later.
I do NOT want to start WW3 over Wharf Rat. I think different songs by different performers resonate differently for some folks, of course. I just mean that Warren Haynes has stolen my heart.....musically. I click with him in a really good and strange way. Of course Jerry is THE MASTAH and I am duly reverent....but I MEAN TO MENTION that in my heart Warren has healed frayed ends.....mended the weave. For me it works. But I mean no disrespect. AT ALL.
Kapiche?
AND YES DAWG
THAT WAS THE STRAY CAT STRUT
I HEARD IT TOOOOOOOO!!!!
No one heard Close Encounters? Pre slip>frank, after the eleven
>>STRAY CAT STRUT
I heard that too (thanks to taperRob)
Same old, Same old? Woo Hoo! If that's the same old shit, keep it up boys. That was one of the hottest shows I have ever seen. Just stupendous. And what a treat to have Rob singing w/ Phil on the Jerry tunes - I always thought Phil's solo vocals were the one thing keeping this band from truly taking it over the top. Now if he'll just let Warren sing the Dew...
This was a very, very good show. Up to the lofty standards of previous Orpheum shows, maybe not among the absolute best but damn good. I heard them tease almost every song they would play in the opening jam. Molo's work on Sunshine at the end of each stanza was massive. Although Sunshine and LSD are two of my favorite tunes they didn't really blow me away, seemed a little forced and loud. They settled down easy for Wheel and the Low Spark was a trip, they pretty much just skipped to the meaty part then dropped back into wheel. I missed Built to Last for natures call but Eyes was as good as I've ever heard them play it. They let it build and build over and over around and around. It reached some serious heights, you can tell you're getting a great Eyes when folks who've been doing the mellow standing & grooving thing the whole show spontaneaously thrust their hands up in the air in the joy of the moment. I enjoyed Masons Children more than ever before, it held up just fine in the set closer role which can be tough given the long history of monster GD 1st set closers. Two more songs and the first set could have been a whole show. The crowd really showed it's appreciation and you could tell the band was glad to be back in Boston. The whole show was filled with very well developed space jams with mutiple teases, sometimes flying past before I could put my finger on what they were. Yes Ted, one weird fully developed teaser I remember was "Stray Cat Strut". Dark Star and Cumberland got serious tease play as well. Second set totally cooked. Fantasy had the Hey Jude thing going strong although only the crowd sang it. NFA was pretty standard but the rest of the set soared. Warf Rat was a huge highlight, Warren's vocals were very poignant, almost soft by Warren standards. Musically, Rat was totally over the top. There were times when you could feel the crowd swoon under it's influence. The rest of the set was high energy balls to the wall frenzied playing. Help-slip-millenium-eleven-slip-franklins, oh man what a ride! It was Warren's night but Rob was on fire especially 2cnd set and Jimmy put on a few jam dropping displays. Might have been the first time I've heard Real Thing, seemed like a Warren signature tune. Boston loooves Into the Mystic and lately Warren treats us to it with whatver band he is with. It was a nice way to end the show. To sum it up, I've MISSED PLQ! Great to have em back. "The Dead were fine at Tweeter and Fleet but Q at the Orpheum is oh so SWEET! Taking a rest tonight but I'm back on tuesday.
Huck - During last nights show I thought of a safer alternative to your SPARKLER idea, Take a couple of glow sticks and either cut or break open and shake like crazy. It gives off a fountain of nice glowing goo that's totaly harmless. You know that place looks like a tender box, and they may not take too kindly to the sparkler...
I may do the same at the tower on Saterday Night. Row BBB and i'm siked to say the least!
David C - i was thinking about that last night when those glow sticks were being batted about. I remember breaking them open and shite in my swirly youth....the urban myth was always that the glowy crap warn't SUCH a good thing to be getting on yr skin. But ah well. (THAT THAR SHITE AINT SO GOOD TO BE PUTTIN IN YER BRAIN CHILE - yow!!!)
we will see about the sparkler. It will definitely depend on state of mind. I'd consider it a badge of honor to be escorted out for such a salute of "pyrotechnics", but there are definitely times you DON'T need to have ANY contact with security.
Tonight might be one of those nights.
IF SO

>>>>the urban myth
As opposed to the Urban Legend.....
Keith Urban.
He ROCKS you know.
BTW, PLEASE not another Jerry vs PLQ debate.....
I am a big fan of the low spark theme early on the tour, by the sounds of it, it seemed like Phil wanted to do the 3rd verse the last night at Riveria, but I guess they saved it for Boston. Rock on!
Jim
has warren been playing his SG all tour? the only song he didn;t play it on last night was mystic. never seen him play really only one guitar before.....
grandio
Warren played his gibson firebird a lot in denver.
Played an electric 12 string rickenbacker for a few mule songs in denver, too!
played the epiphone a decent amount too, with both the Mule and the Q.
Hmmm, I love the Q and all, but I gotta say that Monday night was a NOODLE FEST
C'mon Phil, control this beast!
I dunno, I listened to the stream all day and it was no more or less 'noodly' (whatever that really means) than is typical of PLQ
Don't get me wrong, I had fun, but if Sunday night is considered a strong show from these guys, then I am going to question my 40+ dollar tickets next time. "Jam>Sunshine>LSD", not an opener I was too happy about. "Wheel>LowSpark>Wheel" ,Thank God only one verse of the Spark, "Built to Last", I like. Jam before Eyes was great, but the Eyes lacked something..turn Jimmy UP! Was Rob in the first set mix? Mason's they finally found where I wanted them to be. Second Set made first set look like a soundcheck. Bertha freakin ripped, Wharf Rat put me to bed, H>slip>11>slip>frank, good boys. It was fun to see Phil so happy, Although the encore dissappointed me, I know..too mellow. I needed the HEAT after the Real Thing and didn't get it..oh well, over all I had fun at my first WHQ show.
That comment about Warren singing Dew is Blasphemy in my book. I actually liked it better when Phil sang Fire and Eyes solo.I saw the Phil Dew @ Deer creek '01, and the Greek '02 and both versions and every other version of Phil singing Dew is outstanding. The bummer was when Joan sang it instead of Phil this summer at Deer Creek. If anything, I think Phil should finish the song the way Jerry did and how Phil actually did when he first ressurected this tune...like 4-17-99, and 8-22-99...but I guess it doesn't matter anyway
mmm-mmmm----goood show! that wharf was a sweet one and the smiles from the band had me smiling all night, and do my feet hurt from dancin!
The opening jam was fairly disjointed and didn't do much of intrest at all before dropping into Sunshine of your Love. Sunshine was played slowly and fairly low energy ,while I feel this song should stomp. A long jam followed that again felt slightly forced. Lucy following up was well played but very slow and didn't help kickstart the night. The Wheel was nice but I've heard these guys do it better. When they segued into Low Spark I was dissapointed that they were playing another tune that would keep the energy level low so I was grateful they only did a verse and chorus and the transition back into the wheel was nailed. Built to Last is a great song but I didn't feel like Warren was feeling it that much which lead to a boring version imo. Jimmy played a nice solo in it. The set finally started to pick up with a cool thematic jam into Eyes. Eyes was fairly standard with nice playing from Jimmy and Phil. Phil and Rob on lead vocals for this. Mason's Children was easily the first set highlight, rocking hard and even containing a nice flowing meltdown style jam that was less choppy and forced than the earlier jams. Phil was doing a ton leading and announcing changes thru his mic to the other friends, which kind of made the jams sound less than inspired on this set. Phil and Molo had some trouble locking up during this set too.
Second set opened with a really nice jazzy, dark star related jam that had nice moments from all five members and they built it up nicely while keeping momentum. Dear Mr. Fantasy was really well done. Great guitar and keyboard solos. Sweet Hey Jude tease. This faded back into a second dark stary jam that took it farther out than before and almost sounded like Playing would becoming before dropping into Not Fade Away. This was the kind of energy release the crowd needed and the band took off on the jams getting pretty dirty at times. This rocked out and was followed by a hard driving pumped up Phil and Friends Bertha which is always enjoyable. The crowd loved it. Wharf Rat was good but I personally again felt like Warren was disconnected a little from the tune. Not that he didn't play his parts right, he just didn't sound like the song was speaking from his soul as much as other versions I've heard. But if it moved you, beautiful. The bridge gets me everytime no matter what. The Help->Slip->11->Slip->Franklins was well done. Rocking help with sick molo leading into a tight fast nailed slipknot which got stretched and groovy before diving into deep space and emerging into a high energy 11 which was also played spot on with great dynamics before dropping on a dime back into slip and then a high energy bouncy Franklins to close the second set. It was much better than the first set but still had moments of forced playing but hey thats what can happen when taking the chances these guys take. The double Warren mellow encore was not my favorite way to end a show. Overall one of the lesser Phil and Friends shows I've seen but still enjoyable and had some great moments. Oh yeah hot version of Doner Rap performed with Phil's niece.
Hey Dunbar! Your review sounds alot like mine...what were you on?
I was on 3 mydols and 4 immodium ads. It got a little intense during Built to Last.
