Thought I'd kick off the thread here, cos it's nice to read the pre-show stuff and the live-as-it-happens stuff in a folder that's easily found down the line :-)
Phil, bring back Celebration !!

I am quite spent, but believe they played another tune that I believe was a jackie tune I can not recall, with Larry on violin after Deal. I thought Mountains was to open or second tune in 2nd set latest cause I went for a smoke at break.
Mountains, Dark star>Death Don't have no mercy>dark star>eyes>sugar mags...lovelite enc
Did not write anything down and there was more, but I know this is not too far off.

that second set was pretty jammed out- lots of >jam> in that whole second set!!!
show started at 10:40 and ended at 1:40
we built a house in the Hurricane Katrina area!!
NICE!!
thanks for a complete setlist.. looks like they got out there last night... should be a rocker tonight, for sure!
looks like you all might be getting a viola sammy
All Hail Phil and Friends!
They were so far out there last night! Can't imagine what's in store for tonight, but I bet it is going to be wild! Happy Saturday!
OMG!!! OMG!
It is very unfortunate that the price of the tickets kept me away from this show. Had it been at the regular exorbitant price, I could have made it, instead of the extra-exsorbitant price for a benefit. I could have used that second set for Saturday Night. That one I'm going to. It looks like what my younger, hip friends call SICK.
It was pretty sick!!!
P.S. i really hopethey saved something for tonight, the show I could afford to attend.
This band is hot. I am sure you will not be disappointed with whatever they present tonight.
for a what was billed as a "late night set" it was almost a full show and we BUILT A HOUSE!!! Great show last night,it was good for the soul...........it was medicine and it was healing........ I guess I was over due for some MAGIC. that building just brings out the magic, there was a mighty deep well drilled there long ago and Phil and friends tapped into the energy that is realesed from it. It was GOOD.............
Ronald, I doubt that every awesome song this band knows was played last night.
I'm sure the show tonight will wow on paper. But it's not about the paper, anyway.
Yeah we built a house in New Orleans. Somebody has got to do it, and as Phil said last night, we people have got to do it.
The benefit last night was practical, but more than that it was symbolic of we the people rebuilding our communities and our country.
Just overgrow the government.
Yeah the Fillmore last night was overflowing with ancient magick. I saw lots of happy ghosts last night. People I miss.
the show last night was amazing. Super hevy thick jammed out second set..definately like a 1969 classic era old school dead show.
China cat-deal was a nice openeer--nothing to out of ontrol, but played very well..the BIDTL was sung by larry, and was really a nice "bust out" in it own way-Dire Wolf was nice, kind of let everyone breathe for a second as they followed up with a pretty cool jackie song-Gone WANDERING--for me, that was the only "sit down" save some energy moment of the night...cumberland ripped--nice fast and jammy--
I think Larry was on Fiddle, and jackie added in some really really fun and nice harmonica that made this cumberland worth hearing again...the break was only 15 minutes, and the first set was about 45 minutes...
the second set opened with a slow building, interesting jam, into the mountains of the moon which lead into this very melodic, not spacy, but rhythmic jam-into a super Particle style funky meltdown with some amazing inter-play between jackie on organ and Molitz on keys..right into some particle song with Molitz singing...then another really nicely flowing jam which at this point was showing how really tight this band can be. sometimes when we go to Phil shows, and every other song is "jam" its b/c of a disjunct spaced out type of phlow--last night it felt more of a nod to the old school good ole grateful dead jams of the late 1960's...-with a little generation next style funk thrown in with particle dude and jackie..this all lead into darkstar-which was nice, again, jammy like the days of pigpen----the DEATH NO MERCY was really fucking amazing-next level goodness. old school, new school rapped into one-jackie sang this amazingly--highlight of the night for me!.....the vocals were sung great, and they jammed it so heavy--kind of like the beatles "she's so heavy" with that hard guitar line coming over the music--this had some edge and was jammed back into darksatr-only this time it was more like a post-modern fast paced jammed 2nd verse of dark star, with some slightly different musical progressions than a regular dark star--the other one was hard, fast, rocking, off the charts 1970 style crazy-my friend looked at me and was like, "damm this shit is mean! but so so good and happy all at once"...eyes was really sweet and made me feel the fall 1976 eyes of the world vibe--phil was way turned up during eyes..--and of course, sugar mags ended the night like a new years celebraton, which in a way, it was...
the Lovelight encore was another nod to the old school days of the original fillmore and while i wanted it and it felt like it coould go on forever, it ended.....
good night. lots of great interplay between jackie and larry on guitar, and jackie and steve on keys..there were a few moments of phil and jackie kindo of dancing in sunch together while playing that really highlighted how much fun these guys have playing together.
overall, i really really enjoyed the music last night. i felt jacke had been given a bunch of old fillmore tapes, from the pigpen days, adn this show was a nod to those times..with a mid-70's style eyes thrown in...
this one is going to sound great on CD..and would make a cool release..they could add th profits to buying another house in new orleans...
D'oh!! A full show essentially and some of my favorites thrown in. Like the Jackie tune Gone Wanderin as well. You can't hit every show but this will be remembered as the one that got away for me. Stayed home to rest but was up too late & then got a collect call at like 3am... wrong number!! Shoulda listened to my inner child and gone to this.
Thanks Cuc, great description, sounds like the perfect show for me . I've been called old school more than once
.
Great idea about a cd release for another home.
Nice looking setlist and reviews!
Have a blast tonight and we'll see ya in PORTLAND!!
this was a supremely kickass show, my highlights:
the China Cat was hot, hot hot
Larry's vox on BIODTL seemed weird to me, but the jam was phucking awesome... Cumberland really smoked too...
2nd set was just pure psychedelic magic and rip-rocking, great setlist, great playingm great vibes all around. Mts was sublime, Dark Star was so groovy, Other One great, Eyes totally rocked, what a high energy barnburner, Sugar Mag raged...
My only complaint is the stripped down light show - totally bare bones, didn't even turn on the disco ball during Dark Star... if this was cuz they wanted to send every penny to the Big Easy, then ok... but otherwise i'm wondering what was up there... just felt odd after that sick light show moe brought in last week...
but Phil was on top of his game and whole band was tight, tonight should be great
Gotta complain about something.......................Moe NEEDS a light show........... Phils music IS the light show.....................
I had a blast at the Mardi Gras show, but seeing Phil at the Fillmore was just so special to me. It was my first time at that magical vanue and it blew me away. Hearing dark star there was such a treat! t was a perfect night with a perfect sound and atmosphere. Thanks Phil!
WOW this Mountains Of The Moon is spectacular!
wait til you get to the jam out of DS> Death Don't, its fucking gooood!
I'm there now wishing I was there then, this is the stuff of my dreams, just beautiful.
>>>WOW this Mountains Of The Moon is spectacular!
yes, it really was... that was the best part of the night by far (for me at least).
joshua
This was my first time at the Fillmore and I couldn't have asked for a better show or a better crew of friends to share it with. We got a lot more than the single set that was advertised. I was feeling really good at this show. Cumberland was crackling with energy. Great vibe and great tunes. I love you westies. I miss it out there already. I can't wait till next time. Thank you for a real good time.
