How can we describe this show??? I run out of words... EPIC, Monumental, Magical, Sheer Lunacy... What a night!
Phil has a new sound!
PHIL has a NEW Q!
two nights of major wow factor!
i have posted a few 1/26/08 video clips on you tube ... quality is about what you'd expect for a compact camera smuggled in ... but it's something that lets things be relived!
this q has a smokey room r&b-heavy feel to it ... which works because the room usually is smokey ;)
- shakedown #1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OcKIiFnVWI
- shakedown #2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clJvH1pCkU0
- iko #1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mx6x-67ouGk
- iko #2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Lbo8_XkKKs
a few more to come ...
what can I say best Phil show in years and the Filmore was right up there toooooooooo
2 more video clips:
- jack straw: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNiOXo5Nc78
- dew: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=na50tyaUbPw
All that I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome!
great clips! the place looks rocking during the iko iko, im super-jealous
great!
huge parade eh, wow what a good time!
Thanks for showing us.
Thank for the vids sitting in airport waiting on a plane for Portland
That costume was a dancing bear? I thought for sure that I was clapping for a dog! For a bear, it was a great-looking dog.
What an effing show this was! Phriday Phillmore was great but last night was off the proverbial heezy! Phil was absolutely on fire! Haven't been thoroughly sold on Larry in the past- he seems to lose the melody sometimes when he's soloing but the last two nights swung my opinion- and great pedal-steel playing too. Phil intro'd Molo as The God John Molo and rightly so! Molitz was cooking and Jackie is fantastic! Saw them last at the Greek but they have gelled since then. The band knew how to rock and knew how to stretch it out aaalllll loose and rubbery too! Viola>Caution>Viola, Stephen>11>Unbroken Chain>Fire>Rider>Dew>UJB Holy Moley! Phil's voice was sweeter than usual too, I thought. Morning Dew and Unbroken Chain were both very well sung. The parade was great- thanks for the clips- hope someone has a video to post at tradersden or losslesslegs soon. Three different stilt walkers went down during the parade! It was chaos- I hope they were ok. The floats were cool-Thanks to everyone involved. Honestly, I have always loved Phil shows but haven't really taken me "there" the last couple of times but the last 2 shows have charged my batteries again! Fine fine time indeed!
the big blue dancing bear was great..looked like a giant dancing bear from the balcony...
there was another new orleans style-same chords as aiko song song by ivan neville at the end of aiko, before truckin--it was all melted together into the parade jam..
this show was GREAT!
the one more sat. night opener was perfect, and made me wish the grateful dead would have opened and not closed with that song--its a way btter opener than closer! brown eyed women was nice--pride of cucamunga..well, heyy, that me--and was FUN FUN FUN! bring out the rare stuff!
the jackie song of the set was good, something different, but it fit in well...the more i hear the jackie originals the more i like them..
then its time to go back to the old days, the days of the fillmore and the acid trips--the 60's psychedelic rock era:
old school first with the golden road-midnight hour-viola lee-caution -with some feedback-back into viola..good stuff!--a true nod to pigpen--and a great compliment to the fillmore show from the night before..
jackie really broke down the caution jam--asking Phil if phil had all he needs, phil responding with some serious phil bomb jamming...
both nights made me feel that someone gave jackie some serious old pigpen shows -from 68-69 era grateful dead, and jackie really channeled the old school pigpen energy. the harmonica was great when he used it, the improve during caution was nice..similar to the way jackie nailed death no mercy at the fillmore--this caution was definately a nod to the days of the good ole grateful dead -when they were just gettin started..a thank you to pigpen, in a way--jackie really channelled pigpen these 2 nights..
longest set break ever!..up there with the balcony jumper night at the warfield a couple years ago--endless endless way toooo long set break....
but the wait was worth it..as we got our groove on with the funk out new orleans part down break it down melt you face...shakedown...
shakedown was super funky lots of particle dude funk, and ivan neville on aiko was GREAT--he and paeticle dude really funkified the parade..the vibe on the place can be summed up easily during the parade:
every single person was having fun, smiling, grooving, and enjoying being together in that exact moment...good stuff!
truckin was ripping,-jackie and larry shredded it together...then, jack straw took the universe by surprise-and was nice. from nowhere to everywhere in just 5 minutes..
st stephen>the 11 was HUGE ad well played rock and roll--again back to the 69 era.....unbroken was good--not quite as good as the warfield in novemeber, to my ears, phils vocals started shaky but ended nicely, and the ending part after the whole break it down jam was nice and melodic. Fire on the mountain was good, not epic but solid..i know you rider seemed like a great way to end the show..
but NO they kept going.
morning dew was actually not the best. it was played well, and sung well, sounded good..BUT at 130 in the AM when everyone is really drained and tired, a sllllllllllllooooooooooooowwwww phil singing ballad like Dew really really really dampened the crowd energy-had they playd it earlier it would have been better for everyone...(or they could have just skipped it for th esake of the phlow) uncle johns was nice-but it was hard for most people to get back up and really let it all out after the dew slow down. dont get me wrong, i liked the music--but this was a lesson in song placement and time/place in a setlist..
box of rain was nice, bringing out jeff setzkorns wife to add to the organ donate vibe was nice and touching--though she did go a bit long for 152 a.m..-but, she deserved her moment--the box of rain was a nice short quick way to get us out of there ending at 204 am..nice work phil! (pride of cucamunga, unbroken and box of rain in one show..if oyu like phil--thats wa good thing)
2 great shows with lots of nods to the old school pigpen era..
one missed opportunity was having the "Uncle Sam I am" guy--who was runner up to the dancing bear in the costume contest--they really could have played US Blues and had that guy come back out to dance around the stage during it--would have been a great moment-straight out of the grateful dead movie..
the parade was lots of fun--really well done floats--very fun to look at, and obviously made with lots of good vibes.....the staff at the civic center was amazingly nice, and both nights were total open everything, no rules, no security vibe, no agro security dudes anywhere--good vibes, good times..
the east coasters would be amazed at how free we can be with our shows out here in cali, its a nice thing!
thanks to the band, and to well, everybody, what a fun weekend!
HAD A FUCKING BLAST. Wow.
1st set was ON, with most songs having party/liquor themes. The jams were tight but short, and the place kept going crazy with each tune. The energy was wild and the band stepped up.
Long set break...
The parade was insane. Wavy Gravy hanging off the front float; He's looking his age these days for sure, but it wouldn't be a party without him. Ivan Neville led the band for Iko, which to correct the setlist, was actually an Iko > They All Asked for You > Iko, but with all the visual stimulation of the parade nobody seemed to be paying attention. Ivan did the family proud and brought some New Orleans to this Carnival by the Bay.
From there, I thought the second set hit a funk between Truckin all the way until IKYR started up; it didn't match the energy or cohesion of the monster 1st set. Perhaps the parade knocked the band off-kilter. They had a hard time getting through Truckin', St. Stephen had a new fun arrangement but needed polish, and Larry miffed the clutch point of the Eleven, remeniscent of some "Dead" 03-04 trainwrecks of the tune. Fire on the Mountain was solid but there were no faces melting... It was all fun and high-energy, and the band is working together enough at this point that there were no real trainwrecks, but there were loose ends here and there during most of the second set. Unbroken Chain was beautiful, though. I thought the solid but otherwise uninspiring IKYR was going to end it for us, but apparently Phil had other ideas...
Dew was unbelievable. It was slow and deliberate, but absolute album quality shit. Seeing this was (almost) worth the price of the ticket alone. I thought THAT was gonna be the closer, and a fine one it would have been, but then... UJB... It was fun, though by that time many folks had already hit the exits, as it was very late. Great big long cathartic wild set. The band had it together by the end.
Box encore was well-played, but it was late and everybody was tired, including the band. A good positive note to go home on though...
All in all, the finest party I've seen in years, one that would have made Bill Graham proud. Leagues better than the MG party of a few years ago, and on par with the best of what Phil's done with this band or any other...
Long Live Phil!
details , details , details.
I second that emotion...

STELLAR FUCKING SHOW!
Any show that gifts you a Golden Road and a Viola in the first fucking set is a beautiful thing!
That said, I'm still weeping over missing Friday's second set...go, Phil, go!
It was a far out weekend.....thanks all.
^^^That's all you can tell us about tonight's show!!^^
No, no, no; if you don't regale us Easties with tales right now, that means we all gotta wait until you guys wake up, buck up, smoke up and perk up. Which puts us at 3:30-4 a.m. Eastern time...if we're lucky. Toss me a bone, Scott, toss me a bone
Wow......Looks like a Great Show from afar.
Wish we could have made it, sadly we were both a bit under the weather during Daisy's visit to pick up Maggie. a lil better now but sure sad to have missed the show, still with the weather between and not feeling well we decided to stay in at last call.
Hope everyone had a great time tho 4 sure.
Still waiting to hear Daisy made it to Olympia okay last night, send positive vibes that she did and will make it onward safely to Bellingham today, she has to move some stuff to her new pad tonight as well.
Bright Blessings All - You All Make it Home Safely As Well - Wherever Home May Be (or at least Portland anyway ;),

Oh and yeah, thanks for the updates as well, sounds like one hec of a good time 4 sure.

Well that didnt suck
Please keep your personal woes to yourself Mr Long/shorthair

and my guess for a spoken word Jackie song would be Tell Me Mama, Tell Me Right, or maybe Down in the Valey Woe
hold up.
in the reviews folder, they have it down as viola>caution>viola, PLEASE don't tell me that someone did not mistake a caution for a jackie song....
sorta make sense with the lovelight comparision with Jackie's "can you hear me?!?" rap in Caution..
INCREDIBLE SHOW. The UNBROKEN CHAIN BLEW MY MIND. Actually, the entire show was HOT HOT HOT. Crazy psychedelic, passionate, energized and gorgeous. And you could dance to it
>>>>>> "can you hear me?!?" rap in Caution..
"do you understand me?!?", sorry.
I think it was a Jackie song. Sorry, wish I could be of more help.
People were melting all around me, the MUSIC was crazy good I tell you.
And the most YOUNG people at a show I've ever seen. The "Touch Heads" seem to have done a good job at indoctrinating their young
sounds like shit loads of fun, really happy for you all
>>>in the reviews folder, they have it down as viola>caution>viola, PLEASE don't tell me that someone did not mistake a caution for a jackie song....
Damn Deadheads, so picky, so anal...
*grins*
Funny story, actually, the whole night was SILLY for me. The young man who asked the people in front of me for the name of the strain they were smoking cracked me up. The old heads had no clue. I asked the kid why he wanted to know. Told me he SELLS the stuff and just likes to identify the strains. I did a double take and asked him if he was a High School student - he looked about 15. Yes, he replied. Any other questions "MOM"
And the guy tripping balls by the garbage was very happy when I gave him a job to do. I deputized him and gave him a bag to collect garbage during intermission. he was really, really into it...until he got side tracked and started stripping off his clothes...
^^^was it poz?^^^
poz was at the show???
lol robin
^5
Jinx ya, toots
I was really glad that the kid told me how young he was, I was afraid that I was getting really old and all the other concerts goers were just LOOKING really young. Turns out they actually were as young as they looked...about the same as as most of us I think when we got on the bus ~
(((seat belts)))
can we get some pictures
a Nancy edit in its best form..
I saw Sueshi there at the end of the night, with her camera. Patience Kate!
Oh, and if anyone finds a purple fleece it belongs to HER. Most of you who know her know the jacket. If you see it on someone, you have her permission to kick their ass...and try and retrieve it for her
Hey LH and Robin! How you guys been??? LH you still in Boston??? Im there all the time for work and could easily squeeeze a lunch w you into the day!!! So nice to be back here. Missed this place and everyone in it!!!
Right on Dan! Good to see you here. Yeah I'm still in Boston, hot damn a little bit o snow this morn. I'll email you my number, we should definitely get together for some food etc. when your around. I'm still in back bay.

eric just laughed.
Sounds good LH!! Good to see Phils still bringing the goods! Been WAY outta the loop for too long!
Plenty of tapers there last night. I think it takes a while cause they (at least the ones I know) want to get it right. last time they were rushed, the tracking got all whacked...that and they're stoners
Looks great, can't wait to hear it!

that about says it all.
Doing great, Dan-o! Glad to hear the same for you. I smiled when I saw your posts in Philphreak; it's as if you never left. And, I love your celebratory way of returning: freebies galore. Have a great day!
Seriously.......the show ended at 2:00 am. We should still be sleeping cause I don't want to wake up.....everytime I thought it was going to end Phil and the band cranked it even higher.
The jam in Pride of Cucamonga was the best....Jackie was ripping it up
dan=o
long tiime no hear we still need to get the boys together , ethan just turned 7
2 AM that sounds like a fun smokin show,
is that the old sanfrancisco civic center ?
hey dano!
long time no see brother!
sick. totally sick!
Phil sure knows how to throw a party!
Cold Black Devil/14 Miles is the Jackie tune.
Hey Rasta! Nice to see you checking in. After that party, it might not be a bad idea to have a post show roll call ;)
Good morning EMILY!
that was a good jam in pride.
molitz really shined last night. did some really cool stuff in UBC
Yes, the Pride was insane. A few times during the show they'd start JAMMING and I'd totally forget what song we were in.. and somebody was making cool laser sounds during Unbroken Chain, think that was coming from Molitz.
Sorry we missed you and your crew BOTB! Where were you hanging?
And Bret and Kelly, where were YOU???
Nice seeing Schnee having fun on the PZ float with her crew. They were all looking fine. Thanks for the beads!!!
Ahhh, good times in S.F.!
Looks like some awesome music was played this weekend.
>>>>is that the old sanfrancisco civic center ?
Yeah, same place!! Hey Matty, this was a good one. Phil is having so much fun....I swear he is enjoying it more than we are. He's totally full of energy on stage.
My only complaint is there wasn't 3 sets!
thanks Scott, sounds like da bomb,
phil's current band is hot hot hot
Have a safe trip to Hawaii Emily.
Oh that's right, now Em goes to HI for her DNB tropical adventure.

The laser sounds were molitz. We scored a great spot 3d row loge. Sound was awesome.
THREE SETS? Half the people had already left by the time they finished the second!
Yeah, phil was definitely dancing all around, he looked spry as hell. Awesome.
>>>>Half the people had already left by the time they finished the second!
ACK!
>>>>>>>Half the people had already left by the time they finished the second!
You've GOT to be kidding me!
<<<THREE SETS? Half the people had already left by the time they finished the second!
does not compute
No way. I think they just went up stairs to to the seats, it did look more full up there as night wore on...as did the halls. It was an exhausting night for some ;)
People were leaving from the seats around us all during the second set. It may have looked fuller because there was this huge VIP section that was roped off and empty for most of the show. The entire section of loge that is square facing the stage. 220-219 on this chart, bigger than it looks, maybe 15 rows. Finally in the second set they let people sit there. It was still maybe half full, but I'm sure some bushed folks from the floor were happy to have them.
http://www.barrystickets.com/images/san-francisco- seatingchart/billgraham-civicaud.jpg
It seemed emptier upstairs at the end than the beginning--no lines anywhere, which was awesome. We were in the third row and the first two were emptied soon after UBC, lots of room.
It's an aging population and with a GA show, people who wanted seats got there early. I'm sure a lot of people didn't really expect it to go as late as it did.
I liked the venue, by the way. It sounded great and it made me nostlgic for all the similar style venues where I saw so many of me best dead shows.
Thanks for all of the info. It makes not being there a little better.
wow, sounds like a great night! i'm stoked to see this line-up again some time soon. *****PHIL, PLEASE BRING YOUR BAND TO NC!!*************
The show smoked One of the best Phil shows I have seen in years . now sitting in the airport delayed trying to get to Portland
Some pics
BTW, I thought the floats were particularly good.
...
Thanks Phil.
So real.
Kudos for bring out our good friend Jen Stezekorn on stage. Unbelievable.
Not a dry eye on Box of Rain in our group.
Fare The Well Jeff from the East Bay Pro Music Fans and Partiers
...
One of those shows (like Glens Falls) where you know you've witnessed a historical event. People were bursting into flames. As usual Nancy has her finger on the pulse... a post roll call is appropriate under these circumstances.
>>It's an aging population and with a GA show, people who wanted seats got there early.
Yeah, I was on my feet on the floor for 8 hours straight, only sat my *fat ass* down for a few minutes during one of the breaks. Like I said earlier, there were loads of YOUNG kids on the floor, happy to fill in when the the old ones started leaving, I assumed they were headed up stairs to rest their bones, the thought did occur to me...It was packed down there most of the evening, except for that nice little corner in the back next to the tapers, which made for a wonderful place to dance.
Did seem like they managed to reuse many of the decorations from the previous Mardi Gras.
Loved the Parade! And the confetti cannon on the PZ float blasted us good
*sounds like Lizard's ass. ;)
Some people are forced to leave early because of the "great" Bay Area Rapid Transit system, known as BART shuts down around midnight. So if a late show is on the wrong side of the bay, you have a choice of either leaving early, or paying a fortune for a cab (if you can find one to make the trip), or paying a fortune for a motel for the night, or wandering the streets. They should have our sympathy and understanding. Public Transit here is a bitch from midnight to 6:00a.m.

>>on-street parking around civic center from 2AM-6AM everyday prohibited.
we parked on the street right across from the Civic Center, signs there said Sat and Sun excepted. and the Civic Center garage has always stayed open till the end of the show when we've parked in there.
But if people didn't know it would stay open, they might think they had to leave. I thought it closed at 1 so I didn't park there.
i wrote up a review for each night in the reviews thread if anyone is curious...
>>But if people didn't know it would stay open...
hmm, I thought we cleared that up a couple of years ago here when Phil played New Years and Mardi Gras there. a couple of us even called the Civic Center garage to inquire about the policy and were informed that as long as the show is on, the garage is open. guess it's been too long ~
I'm talking about peeps in general who left, not zoners. They may not have known and some may have left for that reason.
yeah, I don't follow the zone THAT closely to remember parking instructions from 2 years ago.
No biggie, I paid $10 and parked three blocks away.
wow what a night! Thanks to Phil and all the zoners. It was a beautiful night and a great Dew. plus we got to hear a OMSN on an actual Saturday nite
>>. It may have looked fuller because there was this huge VIP section that was roped off and empty for most of the show. The entire section of loge that is square facing the stage. 220-219 on this chart, bigger than it looks, maybe 15 rows
it was 218-219-220..i had front row in 218 for the whole show...it was roped off..i was talking to a security lady right before the show started, and i asked if she had a good suggestion for a good seat that may not get to crowded since i have a bad leg, and was afraid of getting knocked into..she escorted me to the front of the vip section and said--here, have the hole row, and make sure you keep the energy up over here since you'll be the only one in this section until the float people come up ..which, coincidentally, the peeps i came with were on one of the floats, so that worked out to get us all togther during the show...
anyway--thanks to that security lady--she hooked me up, just to be nice--with fron row on the balcony and plenty of space--that ruled!!!
Still Flying.
Reaffirmed (yet again) what I've known for years -- Phil is the best. Nobody puts on "a show" that's even in the same universe as does Phil Lesh.
This particular band has been great since they started. Six months later, there's no better band out there -- any band, no matter how big the name.
Long Live The Q2!
Great seeing you at pre-game Roarshock! And thanks for checking in here
>>I'm talking about peeps in general who left, not zoners.
Oh, nevermind then.
Funny thing is, I got the impression that everybody at the show was a "zoner" - can't tell you how many people I met for the first time who said they were "lurkers" here.
Come out, come out where ever you are ~
I met a ton of new zoners this weekend...they all claimed less lurking and more posting was in order.
Our section upstairs definitely cleared out as it got later and I talked to a few people who were leaving because of the early close on the parking garage...
Oh well...that's why I leave the car at home...
I think I need to go back to bed now
I was real glad to make it to pre-game yesterday. Usually, it's all I can do to get to the show on time!
There were sure a lot of us there. I didn't get many of your names, but you are a good looking crew, and you party like champions!
See you when next it's coming around... in a circle!
wow
that was pretty much a perfect-sized crowd for the venue. there was room on the floor, room in the seats, but it certainly never felt empty. and the beer and bathroom lines weren't bad.
the only real bottle-up was trying to get in from and especially out to the smoking section on the sidewalk, where they insisted on only using one pair of doors, when they could easily have opened up 4 or 6 pairs of doors. that was a real pain in the ass, being squeezed and pushed around by throngs of people.
I felt the show was very good, but not great. there were plenty of great jams, but plenty of trainwrecks. Pride of Cuke was a prime example of that. and I agree with the comments in the review thread about the Dew and John's kind of sucking the energy out of the crowd. I think last year's placement was better with the Fire on the Mountain/Brown Sugar closer. Box was kind of a snoozer for an encore, too; I would have much preferred Cold Rain and Snow or, even better, both.
but I had a great time, caught many beads, and was very happy to have a long show. didn't run into too many zoners, but it sounds like everybody found their comfort zone (and I didn't see anybody jump off the balcony this time).
I'm at a loss for words as I sip my coffee and try to focus on what went down over the last 2 nights. Good times in San Francisco. Great to see so many smiling faces. Friends both old and new. I really don't know what to say except thanks to all those involved in making this an incredible weekend. BIG thanks to Phil for putting on an over the top show from start to finish. I'm gonna work on this cup of coffee, here's something for you folks to look at... ENJOY!!!

Good to see that they still have the old Jester back drop, first saw that at the Kaiser in 1988.
How come Larry only plays a Les Paul on the west coast?

OMG that looks like a ridiculous amt of fun!!!
WOW......looks like an incredible time. So glad for y'all!
Very nice Hedspace. I am all fired up for the Crystal!!
cool I think they also had the Jester backdrop at the 05 mardi gras celebration, thanks for sharing...
Beautiful photos thanks for sharing!
WOW!
Thanks for the pictures. They are great.
What? No pictures of the Chinese Dragon? It led the parade. I still maintain that the big bear looks more like a big dog than a bear. I know I voted for the dog as best costume. Not meaning to gloat, or throw in an I-told-you-so, but the kvetchers about jackie Greene seem to have disappeared, fortunately. They should have known; In Phil We Trust. A fun time was had by all. A great show from the Saturday Night to the Box of Rain.
>>>What? No pictures of the Chinese Dragon?
mine came out a bit blurry, hopefully someone else got a few pictures of it
definitely the same jester backdrop
Whoo-hoo!
Looking good...
I love that dancing bear! And the Wheel in the audience! It looks just like NYE!
Glad you all had fun!
wowza!!! phun phun phun!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Hedspace, what a night! I am still recovering...
Looks like a great time....
Damn...you Westies get all the shows!!!
ISO... Parade pics from the balconies! More parade picks in general!

Finally, after posting regularly on this site for almost two years I actually SEE a Phil & Friends show as a "Zoner"!
I really enjoyed parts of the Fillmore show, especially the the 2nd set, and I enjoyed the night as a party completely.
But I thought they really sounded excellent last night. For me the highlights were Golden Road through the end of the 1st set; there were some really cool jams in there and Phil was simply amazing. What a talent, what a player, what a legend who's going STRONG at 67!
The 2nd set was such a marathon that it all blends; but the music, the visuals from the stage, the crowd and the room itself were all fabulous. It was so great to back "there" once again, where anywhere you look people are flying, tripping, spinning, grooving..... TOTALLY into the music.
As for the band, for those who still have issues I think that, as has been said MANY times already, if you're looking for a really spacey, trippy "outside" type of group you might find a complaint to make, but if you understand that this is a roots/blues based ROCK 'N ROLL band they are outstanding and it's hard to find fault. Jackie brings youth and an ability to sing the rockers (and his guitar playing was surprisingly good), Campbell is a total pro, Molo is rock solid, the keys were really good and damn the bass player kicks ASS!!!
And an added prop must go to Jackie for bringing out so many great Bob Weir tunes. Not being into Ratdog it has been years since I've heard Sugar Mag, Truckin', Jack Straw, etc. Each one was great and I hope he continues to dig into that deep well.
I also must say that it was really good meeting so many Zoners who I have known only as words on a screen; what a true community of cool people this wacky scene is.
Thanks to Doogels and hedspace for introducing me around, and it was a BLAST partying with you folks at the top of the building!
I'm also glad to see some props for the good old Civic, a place I've had MANY amazing times in, and last night was yet another. It's an old-school rock hall in the heart of the city and I'm always happy to go there.
BTW, how cool was it for Phil to bring out Jen Setzekorn for the donor rap. I don't believe that was planned ahead of time, it just got done. Way to go Phil! (and Jen!)
Man, that was a ripping show!! Seriously fun party!!
As others mentioned, any show with Golden Road and a Viola -> Caution sandwich in the first set is going to be epic. At that point, I had already enjoyed it more than Friday's show (which was good in its own way, but seem to be lacking the psychedelic feel of last night - probably because I knew what would be coming the next evening).
2nd set was one of those off-the-hook, did-they-really-just-do-that? sets. Shakedown got the set off to a seriously rocking start. I actually thought they'd start the parade during the first song (Iko, of course), but I liked the way they worked it (it may have been similar in 2005, but I can't recall). I went upstairs to see (read: take pics) of the parade from above, so I sort of missed some of the intimacy of the floor and didn't really notice Ivan's presence all that much (it's sometimes hard to concentrate on the music with all those visuals going down). The Stephen -> Eleven was the bomb for me, as usual. I probably couldn't be critical if I wanted to be, as I just love those songs too much.
I was certain they'd be wrapping it up after the Fire, or certainly after the Rider. Then Phil and Co. just stood on the stage with their instruments - Shit!! They're playing even more this set??!! Isn't Phil bushed?!! Then, they proceed to run through a Morning Dew AND an UJB!! SICK!! As someone else mentioned, maybe song placement was a bit strange at this point, but when Phil is up for playing for that long, I'll live with questionable song placement (the Dew did seem to come in a weird spot). Still, I love Morning Dew (even with Phil singing) and I enjoyed it immensely. The UJB was pretty smokin', too.
The playing was excellent (a few little hiccups, here and there, but nothing too severe), the parade and floats were great, and the vibes were generally pretty awesome.
Altogether, an incredibly fun night of music, and an awesome weekend of Phil!
>>>both nights were total open everything, no rules, no security vibe, no agro security dudes anywhere--good vibes, good times<<<
From top to bottom the shows were produced by virtually the same people that were doing it 20 years ago.
Don't let ANYbody tell you that BGP is dead and gone; it's the PEOPLE that make the show, not the owner of the company.
LONG LIVE ROCK 'N ROLL!!!
I agree with the one statement above that this lineup is better than any band right now. This shit blew me away. My god it brought me back to where it all started. There is nothing like a Dead Show. I have been to quite a few post GD shows with various lineups over the last few years. Warren is one of my heros, but this band was stunningly better than any of the others. Larry and Jackie have it going on! By far the best concert I have seen by anybody since Jerry. Tight and rocking for hours.
Thanks Phil for bringing me home again! It was pure bliss!!! I might have to hit the road for this band.
here
Hey Lance,
Totally agree with you on the scene and the vibe. This was my first SF show in 10 years! (Im an NYC'er) and it brought me back to my days at the Kaiser! no rules, no security, just an all around great vibe! I kept saying to myself that they would never let this go down in NYC. Thanks to all my old BGP'er friends i got to dance on the stage in front of Ivan and Phil during Aiko!!! (I was in the psuedo Kid Rock costume) A night I wont forget!!!!
When phil started singing on dew, I thought Oh Jackie should sing, but then as he blended with phil it really sounded good.
Agreed that it was really nice hearing those bobby tunes.
Great show last night, definitely got my $50 worth. First band was great, and thank you for lettin be myself again really got everyone in the balcony in a good mood and up and dancing! First Phil set was killer, and Pride of Cucamonga was hot with Larry on steel guitar. Next song Golden Road really loosened things up, and we were off to nevernever land with Viola/Cautionfeedback/jam/Viola! Met up with many old friends last night, all shows are like good old reunions these days, that is what makes it so fun for me. I see people I met 20 years ago, very cool. Went to floor for parade, and got way too many beads! Went back up to balcony for Jack Straw, and it was a great ride from there until the end. Great jam in St. Stephen, Larry shredded on that Les Paul Sunburst! Nice jam out of that, and really dug Unbroken Chain, with Jackie on piano. Heard Fire coming, and Jackie sang with Phil on this song and also Morning Dew, and although I don't like change, I thought this improved the sound with both of them singing. This show really had me enjoying this venue, and I can't wait to see another show here again! Security was loose and cool, and it was just a very positive energy all night. My friend took BART, so he missed last two hours of show. Glad I stayed until the very end, and although I am very tired today, but this show really cleansed my soul! I came to SF to get my psychedelic fix, and the boys delivered! Thanks fellas, keep truckin', and I will be there to support you and see you live, love always, BruceEdwardWeber(eddieboy)!
here are a few
I went to both SF shows and thought they were good. I enjoyed them, but I am hoping that Phil changes the line up soon. I think that this lineup is great for party style shows and a solid blues/rock/country thang, but they have a limited ability to deliver the psychedelic goods.
One thing I was noticing throughout both shows is that the guitar tones are seriously lacking in diversity and creativity. Both Jackie and Larry had distortion on throughout almost every song (except when playing acoustic instruments). I just get bored of hearing that all the time, and for some songs it feels forced. Ultimately, these two guitarists do not have the creative spark necessary to take the music to the level that I find most satisfying.
All in all, these shows wer light years better than the Greek.
If Phil is currently having a fun time being 'Rockin Phil Lesh', that is cool. I just hope that he starts pining for a more diverse palette of musical experience... It has been too long since I have seen him chase the stars or dance with the faeries. I know that many of you will scoff at this, but I am hoping that once Trey Anastasio is free to tour again, that we will see him and Phil join up once more.
take care... Joshua
When Phil plays these long shows, the people on that side of the Bay have an unfair advantage. (Except for New Years) In an ideal world, we would have places on both sides of the Bay and close to where the night owl service is available.
Congrats to Joshua, having to get in one more dig at Jackie, Larry, and Phil. Phil embraces changes in terms longer than you would prefer. And you might like the next group even less. Either relax and go with the flow, or surround yourself with only CD's of the combinations you approve of. You might even consider taking a closer look at the criterion that Phil uses for picking his current line-up of friends. Lay back, light up, and go with the flow. All we are saying is, give Phil a chance.
Josh,
Definitely not scoffing at your comments - I know exactly what you are saying. The guitar tones do tend to melt together and become a bit repetitive after a while. However, being that I'm still adapting to Jackie, and Larry's playing, as skilled as it is, is not totally suited to my preferences, I do find that the ensemble sound of the band does a remarkably good job of making me forget the individuals (other than Phil).
While I think some of the individual musicians (guitarists) with whom Phil has played with (Kimock, Herring, Sless) are more suited to the psychedelic music and jams, I really think this group has achieved a really tight sound in its fairly short time together.
I think I was having the same thoughts you express after Friday's Fillmore show, and then last night made me pretty much forget them (for the time being at least). Hell, a setlist and a partly like last night certainly helps, doesn't it?
>>Jackie brings youth
Is that a quality for a guitar player?
I hear he brings a hat and shades too
Just got home and listening to Phil playing with the DN Trio at Iron Springs.
I Love Phil!!!! If anyone can deliver a beter time then transport me there..........to Jerry in Heaven maybe...... after I'm an organ donor!!
Now THAT's THE SPIRIT, Phil and Friends!!!!
I can feel the love and the spirit of the Dead all the way here in PHILly!!!
Boy, I wish I had been there, but I am ecstatic about the show and for everyone who was able to be there. Especially Phil. And for those who could not be there in body, especially Jerry and all the other hip, good loving souls who have left us.
All that was missing was the Bill Graham post show breakfast, lol.
Long live our Grateful Community!!!!!
Until we meet again, and I hope it ain't long....
What can I say.....thank you Phil- we love this stuff
Larry looked truly stoked - and was the finest as a phriend I have ever seen
jackie is one lucky guy, and continues to bring his guitar slingin up a notch
molitz up and twinkling
molo - holdin it down
phil being phil
heads being heads
nice arrangements w tightness at times Q like
stephen and dew done new
props to the community and to the zone {{{{{jen & jeff}}}}}
when is the next bay area show? - i am jonsein - my old legs are indeed tired - 10-11 hours of standin and dancin- what great venues
what is a touch head??
my daughter rode the rail dead center - 15 feet away unbeknownst to me - unfortunately not knowing how to work the ropes - she left a 1am to rescue her car from the garage - and yes they really dug the show
^^ and she request and immediately received the saint - -- that was a good thing
>>>Jackie brings youth
Is that a quality for a guitar player?<<<
It can be, but that wasn't my point. It is a good quality in general for a band that's lead by a 67 year old and plays songs that are 30-40 years old.
Besides, he's not in the band for his guitar playing, which really isn't bad and fits in style well with Larry.
Jackie's youthful exuberance is fresh and it comes through in his singing; he sings the 40+ year old song The Golden Road like he wrote it himself last week and the band just SMOKES it, and the bit during Caution last night when he was turned and facing Phil while singing was really, really good, and that freshness rubs off on the entire band.
They keep it tight and they create a good rockin' sound. Yes, the longer guitar jams get repetitive and I heard the same licks in the third hour that I heard in the second and the first, but I've had that problem with most every P&F incarnation I've seen (which is most every one) but there were also many moments that were truly inspired, and the vibe in the house was "there"; people were into it and it was a fun, moving show.
If I could pick MY perfect band for Phil it would have many different members, but this ain't about wishing or dreaming; at this point I think we're very lucky to have this group playing, especially considering that Ratdog is the alternative.
Jackie's guitar playing has certainly improved, and the emotion coming from his guitar is what counts, not the number of notes he's playing. Jackie is doing a fine job as lead guitarist. Sounded just PERFECT ~
Keep on trucking on...
)))cancer sticks(((
you who complain and whine about such little things when the whole is so much greater than any one player you are just ungrateful and I feel sorry for you. Phil will not change a thing for you............ he changes for him, the players and the whole not a bunch of wish I could be a critics. Find another band that is better at what P&F do and go there. It's so sad you can't enjoy it for what it is, music that you can't hear anywhere else but at a phil show. Stop WHINING. Phil does not choose band members for you he chooses them for all of us and if you don't like it to fuckin bad. There were way more happy heads than whiners at both shows. acccept it or don't he won't change just for you ingrates...........If all you do is look for problems in the ebb and flow of a show you miss all the HIGHLIGHTS.....When the Grateful Dead ended a Show with Morning dew it was SPECIAL now it's out of place and ruined the energy of the whole night ...............yea right................
what he said. ^^^
and I wasn't even there...
but I agree based on the Fall shows I saw.
I think Jackie is a great overall fit for many reasons, mostly b/c Phil seems to be REALLY enjoying himself and having so much FUN!!! He looks like a damn teenager on that stage.
after all these yrs, THAT's what it's all about!!
ROCK ON PHIL!!!
HOLY CRAP! WOW...WOW...WOW!!!
Two fantastic shows in a wonderful city. Met some of the nicest old school dead heads ever. This one guy in particular in the VIP section showed me these pics of Jerry, Pigpen, Phil from the late 60's that he took of the band. Had a slew of backstage passes from back in the day and I could tell that he has been on the bus for a long time. So cool and wicked nice. Such a good vibe and the show was outta this world.
San Fran knows how to thow a good party with virtually no security. Coming from the East Coast it was a sigh of relief. Most shows back east you could never get away puffin front row in front of a security gard (Friday at the Fillmore).
Thank You PHIL!!!!!!!!!!
http://generalfuzz.blogspot.com/2008/01/phil-and-f riends-mardi-gras-edition.html
Absolutely loved this show. Any time I feel like my ears are going to explode from the boys rocking out, I'm a happy woman. Phil has given us the psychedelic bands for years now, so I'm perfectly happy with the switch to this rock-n-roll outfit. One of the best builds in The Eleven I've heard, which is really saying something considering the Q versions.
You only say one thing about a show like this…………MORE,MORE,MORE!!!!!!
In past the 33 years of seeing every series of shows in northern Cal (some out of state too) This one ranks.
When the show starts off with Saturday Night, your in for it.
This line up is so fun. They play fun songs and jams. Not a bunch of late Dead or early P&F live rehearsal noodling jams. They show up with a purpose. They have something to prove to new and old fans. The Grateful Dead is experience not only about jamming, but musical diversity and audience participation.
This show had all of that.
The Show:
Saturday Night – Why save this for last. Great Opener.
Brown Eye Women –Never played enough. One of greatest Garcia complicated chord progressions ever.
Cucamonga – Phil’s best country song – Played as sweet as can be, with a nice jam
Cold Black Devil – Only Jackie song of the night. He delivered
Golden Road To Unlimited Devotion-This one rocked. Previous P&F versions to me were so wrong. This worked.
Midnight Hour – It can not be an epic show without this one. This song basically started it all in 66’
Viola – As heavy as it gets, but not over played to a mush. The people on the street could here this one.
Caution – Phil showed folks what the bass guitar is all about. Great scales, that he does not usually get.
Custom Contest w Phil – Funny as hell. This never happens. Phil was chatting for 10 minutes.
Shakedown Street - Of Course. Classic start to a second set for an epic show. Solid. Excellent vocals.
Iko – This must have been the longest version ever. They tried to play the whole float progression.
Truckin’ – Kinda sounded like the studio version for the verses. Required at Epic shows.
Jack Straw – What a treat. Vocal Duet was correct. Mix with key fill and guitar volume right.
St. Stephen - Required for Epic. Larry was on top of the mix which is important. He loves this tune.
The Eleven Jam. – Had to play a piece of this for this one. Not enough time. 12pm.+ No Vocals.
Unbroken Chain – Deep and sensual with a pro jam.
Fire – Required for an upbeat show. Energy and fun. You hear could the whole crowd singing for blocks.
I Know You Rider- Epic required. First song ever played by Phil with the boys in 1965.
Morning Dew – Full of Drama. Pin drop silence to an explosion. Phil was feeling Jerry. Epic required
Uncle John – Sweet cool down. Jackie played acoustic to avoid the mush version. Outstanding clean sound.
Donor Rap. (Our friend Jen Setzekorn was on stage. We had 40 people at this show. Unbelievable)
Box of Rain - Best choice for a cool down. Not too slow/sophisticated chords and heart felt vocals.
Get this download. This is what the whole 2007 fall tour has produced with this new band. The mix was better than the Warfield. Molitz was clean, but not forgotten. Larry was up when he needed too (sorry know one will ever top Jerry), Phil was clean and had power when he wanted it. Jackie clean on vocal, well mixed on rhythm parts, and his lead fill riffs were inventive. No big solos, but that’s not his gig. Molo just kicks ass every time.
The scene was perfect. No rain when in line and warm all day. You could buy a ticket at the door like in the Winterland days. I played guitar for 4 hours in line, eating and drinking with all. The Mardi Gras theme and floats were fun. The floor was easy to move around and fun. We had a whole balcony section in God’s country. Good sound from their and no security BS or fans fighting for seats. They could have had better beer and faster service. No lines for the bathrooms. The crowd out side was huge all night. It seemed like another party. Much bigger than Warfield or Fillmore outside crowds since there is a park.
We had some 2 first timers and several folk who have not been for years. They were shocked and excited about this gig. That usually tells this gig was a classic. Something for everyone. Had 2 beers afterwards in the pay parking lot on Polk(only$6for all day) and got the hotel at 3 pm. MORE,MORE,MORE…………!!!!!!!!!!

Both nights were X-cellent you can debate which one was better but that's splitting hairs. I can say that Phil played until 1+AM, and 2+AM repsective nights. Phil appears to love playing with Jackie and it sure appears theres a communicative thing going on between Larry and Jackie, no sense of competition.
If you haven't seen this line up, you need to, this is one of the better P&F groups from all time. There were moments of magic both nights, when the band was so tight you couldn't have gotten a cigarette paper in between them. Not since the Dead them selves have I seen this level of tight! And that would absolutely be pre 85 Dead at that!
The rain suxed as did flying home at 8:00 Sunday AM but such is life.
I'm headed to Langerado just because Phil will be there. See ya'll there.
The REX VIP thing was fun but as always over rated, but hey the money goes for great causes as is usual. I suggest if you can afford it, go for it. We were treated as royalty.
I didn't get up on the stage, but Russ & Julie did, as did members of the Ratdog board:

I occasionally lurk here, and realized I should probably link my blog post about Sat night - so here: http://generalfuzz.blogspot.com/2008/01/phil-and-f riends-mardi-gras-edition.html
I hope y'all had a stellar time . . . .
Not only was it an awesome show, but it was my birthday! Best birthday party ever!

Woo Hoo!
For the life of me, I don't grok you folks who say the band is not "psychedelic enough." I was tripping my brains out all weekend (still haven't come down) on nothing stronger than coffee, a couple shots of whisky, and a little bit of pot. Set II at Fillmore was not psychedlic? The Eleven didn't channel Other Worlds?
It works for me big time. Real sorry for those of you who don't dig it and/or need to pick nits. I do notice that you keep coming back, and posting to the Zone.
Speaking of a couple shots of whisky... I hope they break out Minglewood sometime soon. I just know Jackie could nail that one too.
The LMA link above 1.26.08 show was recorded and uploaded by Zoner Pete aka Monkey Tunes..
It was ready to listen to and download early this morning
Thanks Pete for the quality recording and diligency in getting the show out there for us
And to Phil and the band for playing ..
Yep Roarshock gotta agree. If you can go to a show like that and then complain you might as well give up on live music. To say Larry can't play trippy music is obsurd. Larry kills it out there. I loved the agressive tightness he brings. I'd take it over noodly sloppy jams and artificial sustain anyday.
I met a guy at the show that was unhappy because Jerry was not playing. ??????? What can you say to someone like that? Get over it already and have good time or stay home.
>>I hope they break out Minglewood sometime soon. I just know Jackie could nail that one too.
Excellent call, Roarshock, I'd love to see that myself!!
>>>>Set II at Fillmore was not psychedlic?
just finished listening to that this second, and it is fucking sick! incredible performance for without having played in the past 2 months... amazing set!
The whole weekend was great!
The Filmore was not very crowded. Nothing like the year he played it before The Warfield, then the Civic, for New Year's. The Filmore is just a fantastic place. Hopefully, all you 1st timers, poked all around the various rooms and upstairs.
I really want to hear the soundboard of that show.
I'm sure all the music was fantastic. But after being in a work schedule, up at 5:30, work hard, bed by 10:00, then flying after work, for a show that drives long and hard, starting at 10:45!?!
My friend says after the show: "The China Cat opener was spectacular, then they just lost more and more energy." I said: "That was us dude, not the music." For much of the 2nd set, he was reclined on the benches, upstairs, half asleep.
I sat for much of it, but tried not to get too comfortable, for fear of falling asleep.
I did get up to dance to Eyes and Sugar Mag. But with frustratingly little energy. That was really frustrating, not having the energy to fully enjoy this outlandishly great night.
The Civic was a back in the day, Grateful Dead, lot party. And lots of energy, after sleeping 'till 11:30 and eating up Tommy's Joint. When we get in, Rod says 1st thing, "you say you can pick out where the fun dancing will be, so where will that be?" I look around for a moment, and tell him, at the far back, in the middle, right behind the sound board. And that was indeed, the magic dancing area. All the place was a giant dance fest. So we spent both sets, having a hella time dancing behind the soundboard. The floats stopped for a nice long time there. Such great energy!
So yes, a fun weekend indeed!
I sure wish I would have got to hang with Tiffany from N.C. more than just a brief moment.
Hi Tiff.
Phil, Steve, Larry, Jackie and John - thank you for a life changing experience Saturday night on 1/26/2008 at the Bill Graham Civic. Infinitely amazing. Thank you and God bless. Regards, Mark
P.S. Thank you who posted the parade video...talk about instant goose bumps. P.S.S. To the cool couple from Chicago - who found out about the show one hour before it started - Peace and Love.
WOW! I just kept saying it, couldn't really say much else after that show.
It's the New Q! The first version of the PLQ was amazing. Greek Theater, May 2002 was my high water mark for that lineup, and everything since then has felt good, but nothing near the stellar greatness that was Jimmy and Warren. Finally, 5 years after, Phil & his new friends brought me home again. Thank you!
Like those Greeks, the other night at the BG Civic was wave after wave of amazing musical highs. Phil and the band started out powerful, tight, expressive, the kind of music that goes deep for this Head, and just didn't quit for 3 1/2 hours. From start to end, it was dramatic, forceful music. By Morning Dew, I was running out of steam, and then then that guitar line started up and it was high fives in our section. I've got to say, every time he breaks out Unbroken Chain, it turns out to be an amazing show. Again, Greek '02 was the last one for me, and this rivalled or surpassed that one.
I have to repeat what's been said already, this band has definitely gelled, and Phil is one lucky 67-year old (almost 68).
From left to right:
Molitz is tasteful, knows where to add an appropriate harmony in tunes like Unbroken Chain & Jack Straw, but can also rock it with Viola Lee and get funky with Midnight Hour. He's also what Phil calls the "resident weirdo" (and that's coming from one of the great professional weirdos).
Larry Campbell comes from a more "conventional" rock background, from the Dylan/Emmylou roots-Americana side of rock, and his ideas are more concise and to-the-point than, say, a Herring or a Sless, but he's been playing this Dead music with Phil for long enough now that he gets fully inside the music, and goes as deep into it as anyone, 'cept maybe for Jerry who wrote most of it. He can be ballsy rocker or tasteful twanger, and his pedal steel work is sweet.
Jackie Green looks like he's 15, but he sings with conviction and great strength. He's a belter, something this band has needed since Warren left, and his guitar sound is gutsy. Largely a rhythm player in this band, he also plays strong leads.
And then there's Molo. Like a machine. With heart. You can set your watch to his drumming.
We sat in the balcony with the older heads, I think we were the only ones under 50 in our section. Lots of these old skool heads were taking naps during intermission. Let's face it, the first wave is aging. Wait til the baby boomers find out the government is giving away free drugs, that will really sink Medicare!
We sat right on the center line, with the PA like a pair of Texas headphones. The mix was perfect! They're using a Meyer Milo line array speaker system, supplied by Promedia/Ultrasound, and FINALLY Derek Featherstone is mixing them. It was the best mix for Phil since John Cutler mixed them in 99-'01. Derek is a total pro, excellent chops, been touring for a long time. He used to be, maybe still is, the PA System tech for Dave Matthews.
He's using a new mixing board, a Digidesign Venue. It's all digital, and it replaces most of the racks n' racks of gear we used to see at the mix position. Most of that gear is virtual, "in the box" now. It also allows them to record every night to multitrack, in addition to the nightly stereo soundboard mix. I'd love to see some live material "officially" released, but it seems Phil has little interest in studio projects.
Funniest moment: Phil was finalizing the costume contest, and introduced the giant blue Dancing Bear as "absolutley incomprehensible" He looked at this thing, couldn't quite wrap his mind around what he was seeing, and finally noticed that two of its eyes looked like noses. "Three noses, what ever do you use those for!" he exclaimed! Me and my friend doubled over with laughter. Phil could have probably used a few extra noses back in the day......
Listen to this show. It's one of Phil's best.
I agree with Walker, I was dead center on Phil's stacks at bottom of balcony, and the sound was great, and you could hear everyone really well. The sound was really great that last hour of the show, and thank God I was sitting, because it really helped me get into the music more. The show started at 7pm, so by 2am I was awee bit tired, thanks for taking to me to a new level in music Phil! My best friend was with me, and he had only seen one dead show, so this was akileer experince fro him, so glad you made it John, love Bruce(eddieboy)!

As I said above, I thought both shows were good, but not the types of shows I hope to see. If this was all there was to the GD related music, I probably would never have gotten into the music on such a deep level. Honestly though, I am very happy for all of you who loved the shows. I cherish musical experiences that touch me deeply, if these shows were for you like some shows have been for me, then that is fantastic for you.
My experience of the second set at the Filmore was that the jam coming out of Mountains Of The Moon was very psychedelic and cool. after that, there was a lot of good music and jamming with a few inspired parts, but though I could tell they were trying to reach that break through point of psychedellia... it just was not happening. As mentioned above, I think a lot of it for me was the lack of diversity in the guitar tones. I just do not like the sound of distorted guitar that much..... it just aint my bag. I just do not like the blues so much either... there was a heavy blues influence blanketing everything.
Any way... I consider coffee and whiskey to be very potent drugs, and ones that I do not like the effect of in my own body. It makes sense that if these things feel good to you, that you and I would have very different taste in music also. Gotta say, that this line up sounds like a coffee and whiskey kinda lineup. Kinda makes sense.
Any how.. I believe that Phil will explore spaces with music that are more interesting to me in the future. I was just posting my opinion seeing how this is a review thread.
Joshua
I think it's a mistake to dog people for making negative comments as long as they are respectfully given, especially on a review page.
Nothing would be less interesting that reading endless variations of "EPIC!!!" from EVERYONE for EVERY show.
All opinions are valid and I think it broadens one's perspective to hear ALL opinions, and I always find it interesting to hear that different people have different experiences and preferences, so I say KEEP THOSE OPINIONS COMING, positive AND negative!!
"that this line up sounds like a coffee and whiskey kinda lineup. Kinda makes sense"
Get over yourself! I'd be willing to guess that roarshack has dabbled in pychadellia as much as you have and probably more.
Never thought I would hear someone complain becuase the show rocked too much!!!!! Holy Crap Man!!!
I hope Trey goes back on tour too or Phish so that guys like you can stick to Trey and Phish shows. Then you will never have to worry about the show rocking too much.
HaHa!! (only snark not trying to start a flame war, I really like Trey)
Thank you freinds for a real good time.
great band, great community, fun rockin saturday night mardis gras. I got my ya-yas out, danced jumping dead aerobics for hours and revelled with the thousands of freaks, including many long time deadheads like myself. We are the only ones who do what we do! I am grateful for Phil for keeping the music going, for the community, and thanks to KPFA for free tickets I won, yee ha!
Everyone has a right to post their opinion and I am not hating but I must share some laughers I got from reading this thread:
Someone is complaining about Phil playing Morning Dew, Uncle John's Band, and Box of Rain. That's absurd, (as if those songs suck?). I wonder if that person was around for Keep Your Day Job encores with the good ol' Grateful Dead.
Others keep saying silly shit that this line up isn't psycedelic enough, Larry isn't Jerry enough or they don't like the blues, too rocking, not rocking enough etc. blah blah blah. Silly Shit! This band is doing exactly what they should do and doesn't have to be anything else.
Me, I still have the jamming from Unbroken Chain in my head. Mind left body on the dance floor. X factor. Awesome. Believe it if you need it, if you don't just pass it on!
I loved it !!!
Last time I saw Phil he was just OK but this time was wayyyyyyyy better.
"Any way... I consider coffee and whiskey to be very potent drugs, and ones that I do not like the effect of in my own body."
Well... I'm about certain I would have felt the same about the music, even if I hadn't had anything stronger than San Pellegrino for dinner.
Joshua -- no hard feelings. Keep expressing your opinions, and posting them to the Zone!
>>Well... I'm about certain I would have felt the same about the music, even if I hadn't had anything stronger than San Pellegrino for dinner
I do not doubt it. What I meant was that we clearly have different preferences for what consciousness states we find ourselves in. Based on that, it makes sense that we might like different musical vibes. No one is wrong, no one is right. It is all perspective.
>>>Never thought I would hear someone complain becuase the show rocked too much!!!!! Holy Crap Man!!!
I once read an interview with Jerry where he was talking about how if it were up to him, he would be playing slow songs and ballads most of the time. I really connect with that idea. That is where my heart center with the music is, and it is where I feel the most powerful Grateful Dead happened. Any way... no one is righ t no one is wrong. i am glad a lot of you loved the shows...
>>>>>>I hope they break out Minglewood sometime soon. I just know Jackie could nail that one too.
Excellent call, Roarshock, I'd love to see that myself!! >>>>>>>>
WOW, amazing call!!! they busted it out last night!! good call, indeed.....
"Q2" - hmmm, yes that might just work ;-)
Minglewood SUCKS! They need to get it out of the repetoire IMMEDIATELY! TOTAL DREK!!
LOL!!!!!
Some of my best memories of 35 years with this scene are the Mardi Gras shows I saw at the Kaiser. Great to know that the tradition continues.
As far as people leaving, I was one of them and it sucked. I parked in the Parking Lot across the street and it clearly had special signs out as you went in that said the lot closes at 1AM. I asked the guy if he knew that the show would be over by then and he said yes, it should be and never mentioned that they would stay open until the show was over.
The only reason I parked there was because I went to the Civic Center website earlier in the day and that's where they suggest you park. As 1AM approached I started asking people around me if they knew if the lot would stay open and was told that people have had it close on them and not been able to get their cars out before so I left during Unbroken Chain, which I actually though was going to be the closer. How fucking wrong was that???
The two hours of breaks between bands and songs didn't help my situation either.
I have never parked there before and never will again!
Does anyone know for sure if they stayed open until after 2AM?
The did Minglewood in Portland this week and it, uh, was nowhere close to the realm of "sucks"... In fact, as good or better than many older dead versions. Jackie tore it up.
Those Mardi Gras shows at The Kaiser were hot, and I sure had a great time at this one! I am going in for hip replacement surgery on Valentines Day, so this show was very special to me. I just got a new CD rack that holds 1500 CD's, and I got all my Phil CD's together. Man, that guy has played a lot of shows since 1998! I have seen just about everyone in Northern California since then, and unfortunately I had to miss the 11/27/07 show at The Warfield. It was the first Phil show I had missed since 1999 in Northern California, so I am sure glad they played as long and loud as they did! Long live Phil and the deadheads! Love BruceEdwardWeber(eddieboy)!
>>Gotta say, that this line up sounds like a coffee and whiskey kinda lineup.
Hey Joshua, thanks for sharing your thoughts, and keep them coming. If there were ever a day that a Phil show or lineup made 100% of the fans happy all ga-ga, -then- we can start to worry.
While I wouldn't go so far as to say a "coffee and whiskey" lineup, I'd certainly concur at least that the SF shows were not of a highly refined "wine and cheese" variety (though the Fillmore 2nd set was certainly more cerebral and intellectually meaty than the rest of the weekend) that one came to expect from, for example, the Q. Then again, this band exhibits far greater depth, consistency and refinement than, say, any of the last fifty Grateful Dead shows I saw. YMMV.
Though I'd also assess -- after seeing half of the shows on the recent Nokia run in NYC -- that one shouldn't be so quick to judge the lineup as a whole as one that can't appeal to a variety of Deadhead sensibilities and preferences. The civic center show was in large part more broadly "crowd pleasing" and reliant on energy / exuberance / party vibe, but it was just one (very fun) night. The NYC shows by contrast had significant space to explore and meander and experiment and they had already been on the road for 6 weeks, there were as one might expect many more moods and styles revealed. I mean, yeah, it's odd not to have a genuine/traditional lead guitarist and Jackie certainly brings an edge that isn't for everyone. If you can't get past that, well, there it is. In case it isn't obvious to everyone -- like him or not -- Jackie Greene is a f-ing rock star, folks need to start to deal. Just my 2 bits.
While I'm here, a quick note or two on the crowd and venues. I live in Manhattan currently but was a left-coaster for much of the 80s and so I'm not at all unfamiliar with the west coast vibe, but I don't get over much these days. Not at all a diss on the dialed-in well behaved adult tightly-packed head-nodding dudefest crowds one gets here on the east coast, but the far more open family-like friendliness and expressiveness was just so overwhelmingly refreshing, tons of dancing fun! I had never been to the Fillmore, what a great venue... I had never experienced waitress service among the spinners, I could get used to that. :-) I had last been to the civic center on, gulp, 12/31/84, a point which caused no end of amusement to a young lady I was chatting up before the show who of course had to share that "OMG I wasn't even BORN -then-". The place hasn't changed one bit, not even the carpet upstairs (lol); I know it is a little big for Phil except for special events, but I hope to be back.
I found it curious that they turned down the sound from NY, pretty drastically. The sound was fine, but at the NY shows they had it -really- cranked up, like almost TOO loud but at the same time just quite right, crystal clear with excellent instrument/vocal separation but sufficiently loud that Phil's lower registers were so visceral and quite literally -felt- from head to toe. At SF, not so much, and the comparison was apples and apples from my standard spot 15 - 20 feet back directly in front of one of the main side stacks. Go figure.
Anyways, great super-fun shows... Phil continues to push in new directions while keeping it fundamentally old-school. Not for everyone, but I like, very much. I don't know that I'll be curling up with these tapes on a cold winter night in five years, but certainly top-quality adult entertainment in the moment.
Sorry to ramble. Back to lurk mode, see y'all next time.
-Phillip
Wow... This show was a six headed fire breathing monster right out of the gates. The band played like they were possesed. I had one of the most amazing, scary and insightful times ever at this show. I can't get into too much more detail about it because much of it is a mumbled jumbled memory. I will say that the setbreak took what seemed like an eternity, especially in the state of mind I was in and I think that was the point where I lost it and ran for cover. The music was incredibly and unexpectadly powerful as was the catalyst that put me in that frame of mind. I probably wouldn't have made it through in one piece if it wasn't for my friends. Thanks for talking me out of leaving. You folks are awesome. It was great seeing everybody again, and I really hope I didn't scare any of you. The spectacle that was the Mardi Gras show is almost indescribable. People dressed as egyptian pharoahs and dancing dead bears to name but a few. People grooving on floats. Everybody was in a festive mood and there was an awesome vibe in the place. When the show was over, I felt like the band had left a smoking crater of my mind. There was a stretch of the show where I felt like Phil was a sorceror conjuring up the ancient spirits of music from his bass and the rest of the band and the audience were like puppets on a string controlled by his every whim. I was at a loss for words throughout the second half of the show. My only regrets were being unable to communicate with the two lovely ladies who came and sat next to me in the nosebleads during the setbreak, and not being capable of staying up for any of the after parties. You west coast zoners epitomize hospitality. It was great seeing everybody and I can't wait till next time. Thank you all for being there when I was losing it. You all helped me make the transition back to reality a pleasant one. This show was the goods foks. Phil did it again. When will I see you again?
I was just cleaning out my iphone pictures and thought this one of Wavy blowing bubbles was hysterical:
Parking Tip: Shhhhhhhhh!
Corner of Polk & Ivy, 1.5 blocks up from Market, NEXT DOOR to the BG Civic Aud on the right hand side.
Never closes, self serve. $6 until 6:00 AM. Went back and got my car at 11:00 AM Sunday, no problems.
You can't park any closer or any cheaper.
Well as far as my Mardi Gras experience I feel we got quantity over quality. Great energy and lots of fun but I definitely think the playing was a little sloppy. Highlight of the first set for me was the Pride Of Cucamonga. Golden Road was awesome too. I thought Jakies rap during Caution was kinda lame “Steve Molitz can ya feel me?”
Steve played really well the whole night and I think he gets my vote for MVP of the night.
The parade was fun and Ivan sang a great Iko with a verse or two of They All Asked For You in the middle. Truckin > Jack Straw was good as was the Stephen but they had a problem with a time change during the Eleven but recovered quickly.
Unbroken Chain was great lots of good energy during that. I do have a memory of someone in the band hitting a real clunker of a note during it but once again a nice recovery by the band.
IKYR and Morning Dew, what to say about that. I love both songs, however it’s pretty much the same chords and I really did’nt dig em right next to each other but that’s just this mans opinion. Molo had a little slip up at the end of Rider when it gets acapela and syncopated.
Uncle Johns was great and so was the Box encore.
It was a lot of music and a lot of fun partying with all my zoner family.
Fun rating for show: A+
Musical rating for the show: B-
Left San Francisco happy but excited for the band to turn it up a couple of notches in Portland…….
Phil has a fire breathing monster of a band again people
catch a fire
Timmy,
Thanks for an honest opinion. I'm not going to slam you for expressing what you honestly felt. Sorry that you didn't grooove on the music just a bit more. I do think Steve was playing really well that evening, also. I do think I noticed a few of the small glitches you mentioned, but these were basically lost in a swirl of the party and the good headspace I was in. Usually, that makes a world of difference for me.
Philip - like your review/assessment of the East/West Coast differences. Having been born and raised (and seen many shows years ago) in NYC, I know what you're talking about. Glad you digged the Fillmore - hate to say it, but it's become almost second nature to me at this point, and I always should remember to really appreciate what we've got out here in the Bay Area.
As for the volume issue - you should've been at the Warfield show in November. We were down front on the floor and I remember really wishing I'd brought my musician earplugs with me, as my ears were taking a beating. Not only was Larry's guitar REALLY LOUD, but Phil's bombs were pretty damned impressive too. Personally, I'd rather not have my ears damaged, but that's just me (I do like it loud up to a point).
Hope you enjoyed your trip out West.
re:BART hrs, BOTH ACTRANSIT (east bay),& SAMTRANS (south bay) run 'owl service' all nighht long from SF.
