A phenomenal late afternoon and evening with Nelson and Friends and freaks at Da Kine 99. The air was crackling with energy and anticipation and the band did not disappoint. Billy settled into his groove right away and he was having a blast mixing it up with the boys, conjuring up comments like "Molo who?" from several people. All of the band members were obviously totally psyched and brought their A-game from the get-go, but IMO the driver's seat belonged to Pete for most of the evening. Pete REALLY stepped it up and drove the beat especially hard for pretty much the duration. David was psychedelic twangy and didn't break any strings, Barry's playing was fiery and inspired, Mookie laid down some especially tasty licks and vocals, and Billy was surprisingly animated and kept a solid chugging backbeat throughout.
A sweet venue, with a gently sloping grass field (no dust!!) and only a few chunks of lava to trip over. An estimated 300 peeps in attendance, pretty much all perma-grinned once DNF hit the stage. A very modest and down-home vending scene, which was refreshing in a way.
Round 2 this afternoon, a slightly earlier show than yesterday, with DNF scheduled to start at 4 pm, which probably means closer to 4:20
No worries, GF. You totally caught it - Pete was incredible! At one point I caught his eye and he had this BIG sh-e grin. I think it was at the end of the first set when David said "Well that was weird", I meant to ask him to elaborate but never got the chance.
Can't wait to see what they pull out for today.

Alrighty!
Yo Garyfish - so glad you are there for the shows man.
Keep the setlists/photos and reviews comin', please.
And a big thank you to Admin for re-orienting the "Non P&F Reviews Folder" - way to go! That whole Bizarro World Reviews folder gave me an eye cramp while it lasted. . .
Exactly what Dave said!
thanks for the setlists, reviews, and fixed folder, lol!
Well, BudBoy's obviously slackin' on his setlist-posting duties -- so I'll offer this little commentary in the meantime... (Disclaimer: My setlist notes are more skeletal and cryptic than usual, so my comments here are necessarily brief and the song list probably incomplete)
Another day in paradise at Da Kine 99. After Billy's fashionably late arrival, Mark Keys briefly took the mic with some touching and tearful comments about his partner Shiela, who was unable to make the Hawaii tour at the last minute. Then the boys were off and running with a kickass Fable, a solid Freight Train Boogie, then an extended run with Barry on pedal steel: Free Mexican Airforce (Mookie accordion), Garden of Eden > Last Time > Garden (I like the new uptempo Garden a LOT!). Set 1 ended with a resounding run of Because > Sun King jam > Eyes jam (Barry switches to guitar), then a thunderous Rag Mama Rag into setbreak. (Nelson: "Ladies and gentlemen, that was weird!").
Second set was blistering right out of the gate: Willie and the Hand Jive > jam > Fire on the Mtn jam (!!) > Cut and Run (monster muscular jamming) > Long Gone Sam > jam > Wicked Messenger > Stella Blue (a soaring and powerful solo by Barry on steel ~ WOW!!). Double encore of Ripple and Mookie's slow swingin' version of BIODTL. It doesn't get much better than this, folks -- but wait, there's a boat cruise today with snorkeling and whale watching and DNF on board. Ahoy mateys!!

Big fun today on the Ship of Fools!! A 3-hour cruise... er, make that a 5-hour cruise on the 51-foot Body Glove with 100+ Nelson freaks aboard. This craft is almost brand new and has a full bar downstairs, 2 stairways off the stern for easy access into and out of the water, a diving platform and a water slide! Very cool.
Whale watching was unfortunately a bust, the snorkeling was pretty good, the food so-so, and the drinks limited in selection and modestly overpriced. Even so, most everybody seemed to be having a real good time -- except for a few unfortunate souls who succumbed to seasickness , among them Mrs. Canyon, Froggy, Bethy, and a few others I know of. But the wave motion didn't slow down the band, who played an inspired set of acoustic music beginning near sunset and lasting probably over an hour and a half.
By the time the band started there was a pretty fair swell going, making it challenging to stand, walk or dance in a coordinated fashion. David, Barry and Billy sat for the duration, but Pete stood like a rock nearly the whole time, his mane streaming in the breeze as he walked that bass to Davy Jones' Locker and back. Billy was a madman on conga and was thoroughly enjoying himself. Lots of singalongs, esp. on FOTD, Wind & Rain, Oh Babe, and of course, the show-closing NFA. When the last notes were played I finally realized we were already tied up at the dock! A real special time, one for the ol' memory banks for sure.
Tomorrow we're off to the rainy side of the island, going by way of South Point and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Can't wait for tomorrow night's show in Pahoa at the Akebono Theatre, I've heard so many good things about it!!

Just for the record, Billy is playing a djembe, not a conga. Much more versatile drum.
Thanks for all this!

Just back from Casanova's!!
More than one of us is still singing Aiko, better than phil's mardi gras version for sure! Mookie was on all night!!! Yeah Mooooook!
Got a great Into the Mystic!!
The food was delish! The staff was a bit befuddled by the hippies though, no booze on the dance floor and no dancing on the booze floor, needless to say I was corrected by the staff several times. The place was packed!! The locals turned out in force, the norcal gang was the best part of the night, the locals were a bit pushy.
I'll let Budboy do full setlist duties but some highlights were the Cold Rain and Snow encore! Minglewood and Fable of a Chosen One, Nice looooooong Any Naked Eye Second set had a killer Sitting in Limbo and nice jammy Wizards Son. Set ended with a Rocky Road Blues, the house boogied down all night but that was a meeting of the whirling dervishs for sure.
Can't wait to do it again tomorrow!
Got a fun boogie down Going Down the Road, Barry was sounding very Garcia-esque, and that's a good thing!
The band actually started early tonight, seems just moments after Billy K walked in the door, I thought the first three songs were sound check, ha ha ha ha. Billy K sounded good, real laid back, the aloha groove definitely found this band, nice mellow groove.

Guy named Davino has posted rough video clips of several songs from DNF Pauwela Cannery 2-2-08.
http://youtube.com/profile_videos?user=DAVINOENTER PRISES
Camera work is erratic and audio is so-so, but it sure brought back a flood of great memories when I watched 'em. The giant psychedelic display on the wall was awesome, a fitting accompaniment to the INCREDIBLE music going down. Songs posted include Cumberland Blues, Hand Jive (in 3 parts -- part 2 has Billy's drum solo and Pete's bass solo!!), Attics, jam > Long Gone Sam (bad audio, unfortunately), Stella Blue, Box of Rain (preceded by farewell and thank-you speeches), and Ripple.
Still feelin' the LOVE!!!
OK, it took me a while, but I finally got around to uploading a bunch of my video clips from the DNF Hawaii '08 tour.
http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=garyfis h
Over a dozen clips uploaded so far, with a few more yet to go. There's at least one clip from each of the 6 shows. Most are pretty short, less than 2 or 3 minutes, although a handful are in the 4 to 7-minute range. Thus, nearly all are brief segments of songs, not entire tunes. Video quality is variable (camera in motion -- I just HAD to dance!), but the audio is better than I expected. Lots of familiar faces in the crowd (and hands, and backs-of-heads), especially the up-front crew. Lotsa great memories here, folks. Enjoy!!
Has anybody seen these shows up for download yet?
Thanks, Ted
I doubt they'll become available for download, they don't usually allow it.
Steve's EXCELLENT photos from DNF Hawaii tour -- 5 shows, all except the very first
http://www.pbase.com/invertedaircraft
Also included in Steve's gallery are other Hawaii pics -- dolphins, humpback whales, Big Island travel photos, misc. Maui pics
Still tryin' to hang on to those phenomenal feelings, emotions, sights and sounds experienced during NelsonTour -- although it's all getting more distant day by day...
Greetings to all DNB Hawaii travelors. I want to thank all of you for making my adventure so memorable. First vacation in over 2 years and you all met me with open arms. Both friends new and old. XOXO so much, can't wait for the next adventure. I'm not much of a poster, but hope you all reach my message of thanks. KYLE
Let me know if you drop out CO way.
Aloha all -
I'm the Steve that took the photos in the above links which GaryFish posted above. Thanks for the positive comments since figured you all would like to see the photos so I put them up on my photo gallery web site throughout that wonderful week in Hawaii for the DNF shows.
Anyway, I still can't find any of these shows for Download online and was wondering if someone here can provide me a link or email me to start a Vine? There were several tapers at these shows so they must be out there somewhere? If you have copies of any or all of these shows please let me know?
GaryFish? Anyone?
Maholo in advance,
Steve (websb@sbcglobal.net)

yeah, I did post some vids, check 'em out and understand that my feet were off the groung while filming! Funny story, the guy at the door didn't want to let Billy in because he was focked up, I said "hey, man, that's the Grateful Dead's drummer, let him in"!
