thanks to the caller who is unidentified at this time.... sorry
On paper, that looks like the SHIT!!! Can't wait to hear what people have to say!
Not that the REAL setlist doesn't look good, but I was responding to the FAKE one! Still am looking forward to reviews!
just got back from the show at the riviera and it was fantastic. high energy, focused jamming, excellant song choices, and a good crowd. Aside from being felt up on the way in, I've got no complaints. I've got to hear the tape, but I think this one is going to rank up there pretty high!!! This band rules!!!
what happened that caused the first setlist to be 100% wrong? just curious as to what kind of communication breakdown would lead to that...
Fake setlist..
Nothing like Scarlet > Fire and China > Rider in the same set!
they're funnin' with you! The show was un-f-in-believable!!!!
and the Zoner gathering was superior!
Very good show- it's too bad Warren is ill, he didn't sing much. The first verse of Blue Sky and some harmonies, and that was it. His guitar playing wasn't as forceful as usual either, but he gave his best effort.
The one addition I'd made to the setlist is that after Goin' Down the Road, the band did a one verse instrumental tease version of ...And We Bid You Goodnight. And I thought I caught a Mountain Jam quote from Warren during Fire.
yes, not as many Warren vocals, but he was kicking out some fine licks, IV fluids all day or not!!!!!
Mrs P, that show looks dynamite. Did you get experienced for or by it? Nice pairings all in one fat set, although both are looking fine. Thanks for posting the real deal, Trob. All you Boston, CT attendees (and Chitown tomorrow) have a blast and hope to see a few of you's in Philly.
Riveria CHOPHOUSE.
sure looks better than last night. I may actually get off the couch tonite and give it another try.
"I've got mixed up confusion, man it's a killing me".
I guess hearing warren isn't feeling good, explains it all. sure glad I made the warfield, those were the magic I crave !
Warren had to get shots at the Doctors Yesterday.
Man that first show was a STINKER!
Last Night?.......Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh Barn Burning Bliss! Relentlessly in your face, containing some of the best Playing from Phil I have ever seen!
With Warren being under the weather Phil Really picked it up last night. So did Rob Daaaaaaaaaaaaayum that Doin' that Rag was KILLER!
Again I say WTF didn't that other band let Rob sing.......STUPID!
trying to get a setlist for this show was hell, but was able to listen to most of the second set over a cell phone connection.... was wondering why the lack of Warren.... but i know Jimmy was up there in the mix.. and Robs vocals were nice to hear...
hey TC, had a phone number for you, trying to contact someone... but was the home number.. just hope i didnt bother the person at home who answered........
btw.. if anyone is going tonight and would like to call in the list to me, email me...
taperrob@philzone.com
Warren put on his best Michael Jordan face....and despite Flu, cold...whatever...came out and offered up an awesome performance Q proved once again....that all others pale in comparison. There was energy, spirit, FUN on that stage that I did not see all summer.
Thanks Phil...and don't let this magic ever slip away.
Peace
Steve
>>>>>The one addition I'd made to the setlist is that after Goin' Down the Road, the band did a one verse instrumental tease version of ...And We Bid You Goodnight
That would be & has been 'officially' considered the end of GDTRFB since 1971 I guess, so it's not listed seperately.
wow! what a jerry show! must of been feeling the big guy's presence
"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh Barn Burning Bliss! Relentlessly in your face, containing some of the best Playing from Phil I have ever seen! "
- ..waiting for these NY shows is like quiting smoking or something. thanks dude.
Warren had a ponytail!
Marley, that "tease" of And We bid u is part of GDTRFB, it is always there and not a tease, sometimes they will do things up right like the old days and sing And we bid u at the end of GDTRFB. Thats how Jerry wouldve wanted it...
"Goin down the road feelin bad"
poor warren - he was not looking to good last night. he had to wipe his nose after practically every one of his solos. He was coughing a bunch and he looked really out of it and conjested. i'll bet the stage was the last place he wanted to be but he still played with all he had.
"A box of rain will ease the pain"
Hopefully everyone will be feelin better tonight and will leave chicago with good health and spirits.
Can someone say Phantastic?
GREAT SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Quite the Jerry-o-centric set list -- all Jerry songs except Blues Skies, Box, and Know U Rider (which is only partially a Jerry song).
Sounds like Warren has the exact same thing I have. I'm feeling better today, so hopefully he is too. He will be ready to kick it by Boston.
Lots of themes being thrown around last night.
Sometime durin a jam early in the show, FOTD perhaps, phil is distinctly playin the low spark bass line.
during the end jam of half step phil started laying down the crazy fingers teases - and lovin it.
I felt the other one comin out during a jam in/after dire wolf. The whole band fell into it really quickly. These guys have some big ears.
Cryptical was floating around through the air most of the night.
Some smokestack lightin teases were thrown in at some point by phil with some mean licks being exchanged by jimmy and warren.
they fell into the terrapin theme just like Wed. night before playing the song.
Scarlet could be heard a mile away from the opening notes of the jam (which was real nice) everyone around me was smilin and exchangin nods before the band plopped into the opening chords.
>>The one addition I'd made to the setlist is that after Goin' Down the Road, the band did a one verse instrumental tease version of ...And We Bid You Goodnight.
Marley, that's an old GD trick. Go back and listen to any GD version and you'll hear Bid You Goodnight in the mix.

How was the Scarlet>Fire!?!?!
Been ahile since the last Real Scarlet>Fire..
(7-4-01 to my knowledge)
Scarlet had an interesting jam as it "took off" from the coda riff. It stayed pretty close to the beat and path and then made a turn for the unknown (key change) than back to the normal beat and path. Once they changed keys they played around with it for a while before playing the coda riff to scarlet one more time and then BOOM Phil just lays down that trademark baseline and all fall in line - crowd goes nuts - for what would be a scorchin fire on the mountain. It really had a great flow to it and when warren stepped up for his solo after jimmy the energy hit a new peak. Both guitar players were throwin down and phil was orchestrating the entire thing. His bass lines were so rich and fluid. It was beautifull
Right on, Uncle.
They haven't gone back to the standard 4/4 time for Fire, have they? Back in 2000-01 they had some funky rhythm going.
>>>7-4-01 to my knowledge
johnny, are you referring to just phil&friends scarlet>fire? if so, there was one on 7/18/01 and i'de guess they did it at least once in '02. the dead also did it this summer (7/6/03 to open show)
Uh Johnny, the last "real" Scarlet>>Fire was back in '95,7-2-95,I do believe, don't think Jerry was around in 2001.
>>>>>Sounds like Warren has the exact same thing I have. I'm feeling better today, so hopefully he is too. He will be ready to kick it by Boston.
Been going 'round here too.
They told Mrs B it's a 'virus'.....
Me, I broke out my trusty stash of antibiotics when I felt it turn into an ear infection....
So, after 10 days, my wife's 'virus' turned into pnuemonia.
Dr. looks in my ear when I took her in Monday, says "Yup, you got an ear infection, good thing you started those anti-biotics" instead of scolding me like most of them do....
I hope Mrs. B's better by next week's shows.
(((mrs. b)))
this time of year its good to take some zink supplements. if a cold is starting to hit you, try some cold-eez. especially if you're going to shows and are around lots of folks.
It's not a cold. Flu season is early this year. 4 day flu. Also of note the variety of flu that is taking hold in North America is not covered by this years Flu vacination so there is no way to keep it away except keeping healthy and eating well and 'supplimenting' whatever works for you.
BTW: Taking antibiotics for a virus is idiotic. There are two kinds of infections; bacterial and viral. Antibiotics work for bacterial infections not viral infections. I am glad it worked out for you though Bucky as it seems you had a bacterial ear infection.
As for the show last night, I would like to point out that there were no 'new tunes' (i.e. currently referring to songs that were written since Jerry died). All Grateful Dead songs, except 'Blue Sky', which can hardly be refferred to as a 'new song'. Anyway I just thought I would point that out. I am not sure when the last time that happenned (Anyone?????)
Tonight is show # 3 for me here in Chicago. Does anyone else out there love the Riviera as much as I do? The best damn balcony in show business! The front rows are like midair seats that hover just a few feet above the stage...and the sound! it's warm and clean. Saw an interesting thing while up there. I guy with band credentials was moving about the balcony with a computer tablet that had what looked like an equlalizer like graphic on it. The colors on the tablet were clearly pulsing to the sound of the music (I know what your thinking and the answer is NO) He moved from place to place, apparently making fine adjustments to the balcony's PA cluster (any other theories?) Very cool!.....remote wireless PA control for the bacony, during the set! Thank you Phil for making a good thing better!
And speaking of better, I have some observations on how this band is today compared to a year ago when they began their hiatus. In short BETTER. More specifically they are moving into a more complex understanding and treatment of the music. A year ago, they had reached a level where shows were awesome because the songs as we know them had been developed to a point where they simply could not be played any better (IMO). Then: enter the Dead tour and Jimmy's trial by fire last summer. Phil then contemplates the PLQ for this fall and says: "...hmmm, where do we go from here?..." PLQ is clearly distinguishes itself from The Dead, in that PLQ is a real musical think tank. I now see them engaging in a new exploration of tunes old and new; in a sense deconstructing many things familiar and exploring the root of the music and then reconstructing it in some unusual and unexpected ways. Take Cumberland Blues for instance. It sounded more like something from a Frank Zappa album than from Workingman's Dead. The beautiful verses and choruses were all still there in a traditional way but the instrumentals really turned the whole thing on it's head. Phil's playing, now consistently loud and clear in the mix, is often a fascinating "shell game" of notes, especially during the jams. You think a note is going to be here....and it ends up being there. It's making for some interesting directions. It's this kind of thinking that is going to make this band even greater and more free to travel through the music. It seems Phil is using his "red" pedal just to cue the band for song intros or re-intros out of jams. The rest is encoded in the playing. I think this band may be moving toward a day when written setlists are no longer required(??)...just play and listen...listen and play. Enjoy tonight, everyone!
ditto . hot show . good stuff all around . thank you Warren for coming out and playing last night when you were feeling under the weather. get well soon.we love you.
the whole Q was on fire , pure honest energy.last night was one of THOSE shows . weird shit goin down.i think tonight that mamas gonna lay a rose on us
ok, so the guy who has our tickets for tonight just called to say HE LOST THEM! and the show is sold out. i might just head up and scalp, but if anybody on here at this late hour has an extra and wants to meet me at the door, please call me at 773-276-3763.
thanks!
Great analysis Chamatzoo! PLQ is reaching new heights that are far more sophisticated and evolutionary than anything we saw last summer. Don't get me wrong, the summer Dead shows at Red Rocks (saw all 5) were loads of fun, great party. But PLQ is pushing the improvisational creativity far beyond anything that the Dead are capable of. I keep hoping and imagining that Phil sees that and wants to keep pushing that with the Q - his face at the end of any long jam with the Q looks like he can't believe how incredible it was what they just created on stage - at least that's what it looks like to me.
Too bad to hear about the illnesses in Chicago - during the Sunday show at the Philmore, it looked like Jimmy didn't feel too well, and that he told Warren during the Mule set that he didn't want to come on to jam with Mule because of that (Jimmy's amp was set up onstage for Mule just like Friday and Saturday).
Whatever this is--I got a virus, says the doc-- it really sucks ass. Warren is a SOLDIER for going out and playing.
Ugh...I've had one nostril since Monday, crud flying out of my lungs...it SUCKS, man...
Tell everyone within the first few rows to keep their smoking to a minimum. I'm sure the band members who are sick could use as much clean air as possible...
Please wash yer hands and face often. that really prevents alot of illness. specially durring flu season. um which is now. =)

God that sounds horrible. Leave the Zappa crappa for Phish.

The set list for this show is unreal. ***I was not at the show.*** If you look at the first set it seems to have a very shit-kickin' countrified tunes (and I mean that in the most loving way) My question is: For those who were at the show and; Chametzoo was your interpretation of the first set, say like 'country' or was it more like country on meth? In other words were the tunes/jams through out the first set more upbeat/technical sounding/ with different changes etc.?
If this were true it would be a most refreshing change.
Chametzoo: If you have anything to add or expand on about this show. I would be most interested in hearing about it.
>>God that sounds horrible. Leave the Zappa crappa for Phish.
So Olo you are staying home for the upcoming PLQ shows. Right?
>>: For those who were at the show and; Chametzoo was your interpretation of the first set, say like 'country' or was it more like country on meth? In other words were the tunes/jams through out the first set more upbeat/technical sounding/ with different changes etc.? <<
more like a country cousin who got spun out in the big city and ended up learning how to make his own dmt :P i'll leave the more technical descriptions to those who are better equipped to dish em out . thursday night found me about 17 shows shy of being in the triple digit attendance zone for Phil and Friends, and i'd have to rate it in my top 5 .i just may hang up my adidas after this one(#1, 10-27-99 , it was very personal).
still early in the fall tour , you east coasters treat em swell okay? and yes , i washed my hands first

I am interested that none of you trivia buffs have picked up on this. I am not sure how to research this other than with database software and a query of all shows since 7-9-95 with parameters; not 'Celebration' and not 'Patchwork Quilt' etc.) Otherwise its checking back one show at a time. Anyone know where this database could be found? Does Etree allow this kind of query?
'Blue Sky' - WOW
My eyes watered up and gentle teardrops rolled down my cheeks.
Warren Haynes solo is so happy...you can hear him laughing.
