Money,money ?
WHERE'S THE STREAMING VIDEO?
thirty two teeth in a jawbone...
alabama trien fuh none....
beyfo i hafta hittem, i hopeys got the sens ta run...
iclips.net
hasn't started yet. i don't think.
they had a little q&a with Phil (in obama/dead shirt) Mickey and Bobby.
I caught just the very end.
Now waiting on the show.
I lost streaming video after the interview, now nothing
I don'y know from nothing, but I know it come out right
probably clearing the stage, setting the stage, and phil's probably giving a pep talk back stage.
can't even get to iclips webpage at the moment...
try this...
http://iclips-live-1.wm.llnwd.net/iclips_live_1
should work.
right now it's just the ICLIPS screen saver deal.
neither can i
Anybody getting on iClips?
This is iKilling ME!
Thanks matthew... that opened a Windows Media Player window, displaying an iclips logo with no sound
Can Anyone See anything yet?
Has the show started is anyone getting any iclips love?
no iclips for me... any word from the show?
that's where i'm at BONGO, i think the actual show hasn't started, the preshow press conference ended about 7:25. or so.
I would imagine if setlist reports start coming in and we still have the stupid iclips logo, we should figure something else, until then, Smile, smile, smile...
no love from iClips here
thanks matt - i couldn't enter iclips also !
your portal worked !
They should make the soundboard available since we can't see the iclips link!!!
No luck at this end... the above link just gives me an error "invalid movie" message and the iclips entry attempts just times out, no access. Overloaded perhaps?
U think Jackie will get to sing, or will Bobby hog the stage?
I think they make it available for free download
This sucks! I hate ICLIPS! Why couldn't they at least just simulcast the show on their Dead Channel on Sirius? At least then we could hear it...
I hope Jackie sings a few
i think it's funny that people are antsy about a show starting at the warf when its not yet 8pm
neither music nor political events run on time, folks ... be patient
and if you can't wait any longer, ask for yer money back ;)
I agree JW
Yeah, no kidding...a dead show on time? hahahahahhahaa
Who's playing lead guitar tonight, Jackie?
Sooooo....does EVERYONE just have WMP w/ the iClips logo?
John, I heard it is being broadcast there.
did anyone see the pre-show news conference ?
any reviews of what happened and who was on ?
Yep Pappy
I asked the GDTSTOO crew about Campbell, they said he headed back to NYC...
Lets hope for warren
Hahah....GD starting on time...good one
Overload fo sho! Great publicity though, right?
No! NO WARREN!!! I really wanna hear a show sans Warren...I mean, I LOVE Warren, but I was really looking forward to something different this time.
Yea, I bet Iclips love this press. "Iclips - the site that doesn't load. Try all night, see if we care."
I know, its not their fault, I guess. But why does everyone always underestimate our numbers?
You'd think they'd at least show the inside of the arena, so we'd know if we were really connected properly, or not.
So let's assume (pray) that the show hasn't started as Philsisson is right I've never been to the Warfield for a show that started this early.
What's everyone's call for an opener? I say a sweet Playin'
I have heard some Ryan Adams rumors... he has come a long way since the 2005 shows. 11/02 and 11/05 with P&F were incredible.
iclips is a no go. Sounds like we are all looking at a logo. Lame
Still nothing right? Not to be a nudge...but it DID say 7:30 PST...hehe
My call for the opener is PROMISED LAND
iClips buffers to about 25% then craps out...
is anyone at the show going to be updating songs/setlist?
would be nice if they at least came on and said something at iclips
yes it said 7:30 but in their FAQ they even state that there may be delays that are beyond their control for example weather, band not coming onstage - on time......etc.
Yes, this is very lame and non-professional. Perhaps this is the boys way of telling us to vote for Hillary!
that is iclips FAQ
Any other suggestions???
US Blues as the opener is what I would guess.
I'm not sure about Ryan. He's on tour. I just saw him in Berkeley last Monday night.
lol bullbrick
No thanks to Ryan...Lets hope for a Chris Robinson appearance.
Oh, my iClips on Windows Media Player is all buffered up to 100%, but it's still the logo. I'm SURE I'll be hearing that ringing of the twanging A chord that opens Promised Land, any minute!!
I might just wait to review the set list tomorrow. My eyes keep seeing swirly iclips logo. If this isn't great marketing I don't know what is. Are we being Played?
Steve R- Sirius Dead Channel just playing GD music and there is no mention of the show on Sirius' site, so I don't believe so.
RA's tour ended in LA on 1/31, I believe...
Something is happening....
I suspect that the site is overloaded... I can't even get to iclips.net - the site times out altogether as if it doesn't even exist.
Thanks John and Harlow.
Shows what I know LOL
No disrespect to you allen woody, but please NOOOOOOOOOO Chris R.
I like him a lot, but not with PnF
The logo is off, and now I have a black screen with a small logo off to the right. For those not able to get into the iclips.net site, please try the link posted above- it is good. I think...
screen lost iclips logo and went black
logos back
Got some weird thingy at the bottom of the screen there for a minute...now, it's back to the iClips logo...phooey
It sure is....damn...
Something is happening here
But you don't know what it is.
Do you, Mr. Jones?
we have gone black again
Sheeesh...maybe I've got time to go outside & burn....hahahah....I'm sure the lights'll go down when I do.
Still have the white logo here

Got voice-mail...
Hey Bongo, did you leave them a message?
Does anyone know if they started? Anyone from the inside.
back to the iclips logo here, no reports from anyone actually at the show? In the meantime dead.net is offering streams of the new road trips series...
Sword-swallower walks up to you
And then he kneels
He crosses himself and then
He clicks his high-heels
Without further notice
He asks you how it feels and
Says, "Here's your throat back,
Thanks for the loan."
My favorite Dylan song ever.
Bobby singing it in Hampton 88...sickness
Maybe they're waiting on Barack, himself...NOT.
Yes I did leave iClips a message telling them that there were many disappointed people trying to connect to this webcast.
i just sent an e-mail to a pr firm that did a big writeup on how great iclips is... i told her NOT REALLY !! probaly server overload.. but what the freak did they expect !!!!!!! i am a little pissed and a lot dissapointed.. was looking forward to seeeing the boys together !! hopefully iclips will archive the show and have it up for a few weeks !! lets all send them a nice reminder !!
peace out
< (Scratching head)
They wouls have strted by now.....
Barack is on C-span talking live right now, in Boston...
I must say, I DO feel like a moron just sitting here staring at the iClips logo.
It appears, that they were not ready for this. Failed attempt. It will show up as soon as it is over.
in the pre-show press conference, phil said it would be streaming all day tomorrow...
John, I know...I was jes kiddin'....
On the philzone homepage it says show started on the "Time till next show" counter, but I do not :know if it said it right from the beginning AT 7:30pm
I'm really bummed but still holding onto a glimmer of hope that this will kick in any minute now
What's the latest they would possibly start?
The only thing iClips is missing is a nice fancy Super bowl commercial to brag about spending their investor's money on...
they will show that before the show..........
hillary hacked in and there will soon be donkeyporn streaming
I GOT BARACK!!!!
there we are........all you naysayers
fINALLY !~!!
Hey its on!
It's on! Barack!!!!
WE'RE IN, BABY!!!
It's working!!!!
BARACK is all we get???
WTF?
come on, Promised Land!
talking head Barack... now back to logo blah
That didn't last long
did he say everyone SIT DOWN and enjoy the music?! ROTFLMAO
Playin - nice call...
PLAYING!!! I knew it!
PLAYIN... static, skips, but it's OK
Choppy
Mark Karan playin' lead....
MK not too shabby! Sless would have been cool and I'm not even goin' to mention SK....
who's the THIRD guitarist??? I see Jackie, Bob and someone else
I am getting choopy sinal as well
KARAN?!! I didn't think he was back yet...cut his hair a bit shorter...did NOT recognize him!
3 drummers?
The lead slot may rotate tonight... Sless might also be making an appearance.
Karan played a few songs at the Rex benefit in December at the Warfield. Good to see him back on stage!
Haven't seen a shot of Mickey yet
Karan lost his hair from Chemo but is growing back as he is in much better health now...
Pedal steel (w/blanket on top) set up right at stage center... for Sless I guess.
FYI- The show is being simulcast on Sirius- Grateful Dead Channel. Wow. Not one time did they announce that. But it sounds great on there!!
sounds like the real GD........finally,,,,,,,, they got to get back together.............maybe they can put thier issues aside
SLESS ON PEDAL STEEL!!
And here's Barry! I was wondering what that was covered in blanket by Phil..hello pedal stee!
I was at that show when Karan made an appearance. His hair has gotten longer and he looks better.
Hope he's well on his way to full recovery.
Mickey doing the stand-up drumming thing (no sit down kit), never saw that before...
Karan looks great....they DO sound great....here comes SOMETHING....I'm smellin' a Cassidy, maybe?
audio still is choppy, maybe get sirius going..
Unfortunately, sound remains incredibly choppy...
BE Woman
Playin' > Brown Eyed
the soundboard will be fine.......at least we can kind of be there
Jackie sure has come a long way since July
BOBBY with the solo! Pretty good...go Barry
Guys, if you don't have sirius- or the Dish Network- you can still get the show on Sirius website- just sign up for a trial membership. Its free, I think, for three days. It sounds GREAT on Sirius.
i cant get on iclips to save my life. please phil give us more.
OK... that's twice so far, Phil directing the band. Bobby's the side man tonight.
stickymcnuggets try this link:
http://iclips-live-1.wm.llnwd.net/iclips_live_1
If you have Sirius the Sound is clearer !
thank you so much brother!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!11111
the sound delay is larger though
1/2-Step in that lowered key to match Phil's voice...heeh
1/2 step. nice phil. Like the post-GD arrangement of this...
half step
MK already off-stage??
Sless sounds great - as usual.
Actually, Sirius is a bit faster for me. Which is good, I have delayed it, and now the simulcast is perfect!
John Wilson....... how do you delay?
I want one of those tee-shirts Phil and Mickey are wearing.
Now he's comin' back (Karan)
Mickey and Phil with the Big-O shirts. Now we know why they're backing Barack -- because the logos match! It's all in the marketing doncha know...
Ditto: John Wilson how do you delay the Sirius signal?
Minglewood....
this is the song where Jerry said "we've played it more than is fair"
yeah John W, the signal from Sirius is faster
the stream sounds terrible on iclips!!!
Karan sounds great on New Minglewood
What was that Bobby verse in Minglewood?
nebulous significance. nice
Come Together...you KNEW they were doin' THIS tonite!!
I would disagree that ol' Bob is a sideman tonight....Phil is definitely directing traffic, to a point...this is pretty good Grateful Dead stuff, right here...GOD, I miss Jerry
I guess you can't delay if you are using the computer stream. I am delaying it with my Sirius radio- it lets me "TIVO" the radio. If you have one of the replay radios, you can do it. Sorry if you can't delay the computer stream.
Come together is an obvious pick for the show but it sounds great in the fist set
JW.... yeah I am listning through the internet !
This makes me wish I had a home docking station for my Sirius
short first set = 3 sets ???
middle set being @
I just went to sirius.com and signed up for a free 3 day trial, then dialed in the GD channel.
Sound is VASTLY superior to iclips!!!! (You will then need to mute the iclips audio or the two streams will blend in with each other.)
I would highly recommend this move.
5 song first set? what is this 1995??? hahahah.. j/k....VERY NICE - even on my choppy iClips...it's not so bad. Wish I had Sirius to make it perfect, but my Comcast cable was cheaper than Dish this year...hehe.
SUGGESTIONS FOR SET 2????
They better have a long second set, or Obama done lost my vote.
Sounds great so far. Might be a short two sets, if they didn't rehearse a lot. Here come some interviews on iClips, at least the audio part...
Phil speech....nice....let's hear it!
wat just happend
http://iclips-live-1.wm.llw.net/iclips_live_1

Well at least the sound choppiness makes every song sound like The Eleven to me.
Set 1:
Playin>
Brown Eyed Woman>

Come Together
Keith- Sorry...
That was a short set, no?
Good stuff....I'm thinkin' THIS for SET TWO:
Shakedown Street > The Other One > Estimated Prophet > Uncle John's Band > Playin' Reprise > Promised Land (I'm still stickin' with it!).
ENCORE: Liberty.
Liberty would be be a great closer but my money is on the ole US Blues
they got to have an u.s. blues tonight !
Hey, if anyone wants to try Sirius out on the computer, with the free trial- here is a link-
http://www.sirius.com/gratefuldead
Eyes 2nd set opener.....
Does anyone know if there is a way to delay the Sirius Internet Radio stream, so it synchs with the iclips video stream?
Great speeches! I'm fired up!!!
Wish I lived in Chicago so I could vote 4 or 5 times tomorrow.
LOL Steve...
Phil for President!!!
I'd think Throwing Stones would show up somewhere in the 2nd set.
acoustic here we come...
Probably a NFA...can't rule out Touch Of Grey...
We Will Survive!!!
any other set 2 thoughts??
thanks for the link bongo!!

ACOUSTIC!
Phil on STAND UP!
Blackbird
He was a friend of mine> Glendale train

E:US Blues
Jackie's due to sing one of his tunes, right?
I will ask again:
Does anyone know if there is a way to delay the Sirius Internet Radio stream, so it syncs with the iclips video stream?
harlow:
JW said you can do it if you have an in-home console, if you are listning to it over the internet there is not a way
the sirius stream is much more clear! thanks!
harlow, if you have an in-home Sirius console of some sort you can pause it for a seconds than hit play
FOTD...I did NOT think we'd see this tonight.... thought it'd be too much like a link to BUSH!! Bwwahahahhah!!
Acoustic set
Deep Elam!
Friend of The Devil
I would doubt HIGHLY that you'll see a Jackie tune tonight....this is a GD reunion (of sorts).
Mr. Weir has taken about 4 solos tonight, by my calculations (and I may be one short). He's playing VERY nicely, IMO.
Big Mon in the acoustic set?!?!?!

Jackie singing Deal...killer.
Jackie 's singing. !
Nice
any chance of Hunter being there?
I would guess no .....ant man bee
Jackie's voice and attitude is soooooo much better than C. Robinson !
Seems like Jackie keeps throwing Bobby solos... he sure wasn't ready to take one in Deal...hehe. 80% is still good, Bob!
the Jack(ie) man rocks!
I went from PA > SF, CA in 2005 to see the Mardi Gras show when Chris Robison sang, and I went to the one approx 1 week ago, and what a differenc !!!
Jackie tore it up !
IMO

RIPPLE
Keith-- I completely agree with you re: Jackie.
It's great to see the "under 30" generation represented in this line-up.
OK, let me be the first to ask.
Any chance they're having such a good time that this could be the start of something big?
Jackie on mando....this kid is great
Steve...it'd be nice to see, but I'm a doubter. I just think they like doing their own things at this point. But this is sure one helluva treat. THANK YOU FELLAS!!
yep, I think Jackie rocked at Mardis Gras show 2008.01.26.
Speaking of those shows anybody see the Fillmore 2008.01.25 show floating around for download or vine?
Steve- they do seem to be enjoying one another.
1/25/08 went up to bt.etree today I think...
Quick sets!
(But no complaints...they sound great!)
I sure didn't think it'd be a 3-setter...I'm on the East Coast...MAN am I gonna be bushed for work tomorrow (sorry for that horrible expression). Set 3 should be some good old jammy stuff...Estimated....Viola Lee....Other 1...
thank AF
Help on the Way to open Set III
Work will be easy with a PHAT simle on our face!
They also opened with Help On The Way when they played in Boston during the Democratic National Convention in July 2004.
Looks like Jackie's a kid at a GD fantasy camp. Man the kid is living a dream tonight. This is some treat.
set 3 pix??
me too Eric. East coast riser at 5am and expect set III to be a bit longer. Who needs sleep. We never needed it on tour.
Oh yeah! HELP ON THE WAY!!! Duh...sorry, it's late here.
Help and Franklins a good bet. US Blues maybe...
Damn skippy, Dave - I ain't goin' to bed! Okay, I'm picking THIS for the set that will follow these messages from Phil, Bobby & Mickey....
Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Estimated Prophet > Throwing Stones > Morning Dew > Promised Land.
Encore: U.S. Blues > Liberty....haha!!!
Pappygh that looks right but may not have time for all...
They've got to do a Dark Star or St. Stephen for old times sake.

AC...I hear ya....just dreaming..heeeheee....
Would like to hear a BUNCH more, but wasn't that ALWAYS the case? This show is a lot more enjoyable for me than almost every Rat Dog or P&F show I've ever seen. Best post-Jerry performance yet, IMO. Tight and it really looks like they're having fun. Great observation w/ Jackie @ GD fantasy camp, Dave. Dig it. I'D LOVE to play guitar w/ these guys - definitely would be a dream come true...
Maybe they'll just come out & do a 45 minute Dark Star and call it a night!!!
new speedway
Homebrew and Eric - back in the day I once went to work still tripping from a Dead show at the Manhattan Center.
Enough with the logo! I'd rather see that Obama SYF and listen to the freaks!
pretty weird this iclips thing.
Cool and weird to have it.
How about those go and vote adds..........
Steve....that's classic! I'm a manager at a new car dealership in Pittsburgh...don't think I could swing THAT! Hahah....that is great.
Help-Slip-Franklin's....I can't believe they won't lead this set off with Help....it just seems to fit.
Eric It wasn't so great that day LOL
Barack....sit down & enjoy the music....classic. Although I AM sitting at my cp... ;)
Steve, I imagine not!! Hahah....good thing you can laugh now! I'm not hearing tuning for Help On The Way. UJB???
Eric, its damn sweet for sure but the last Nokia shows were the best post Jer that I have seen
it on
china
"sit down & enjoy the music" ? does barack know his audience? MOre like "get up and shake it sugaree!"
China Cat Sunflower! AC...didn't see Nokia... haven't seen too terribly much. Best stuff other than this I saw was P&F w/ Robben Ford, Billy Payne, Paul Barrere & Molo....sick. This just has more sentimental value to it, PLUS they're playing great.
Cool. Bobby with the 335, Mark with the SG.
Bobby playin' one of his old Ibanez geetars
NICE!! Great shot of a lady tokin' on a number in the front row!
Thanks AF again for the info on the shows being posted on etree.
I went out for the 2 shows in SF but left and missed the Portland shows.
AC, That's a Gibson ES335.
The archive source of Mardi Gras sounds damn fine. Phil keeping the bar high... Hope they come back east soon.
I wish fill made the Mardi Gras show available for free

no doubt Steve but sometimes you have to take what you can get, and I know I said this already but I'd rather it be Jackie Green than Chris Robinson...
I'm still sweating over that Other One, lol.
They get a lot of mileage out of this tune. Warren hit it perfect, and so did Joan. Then again, just take me back to 4-19-83...
TAke me to 2-4-08 ......live for today, the moment!
sweet
Keith,
I totally agree. You can keep Chris. Jackie is so good with Phil.
This show is hot!!! coming togehter much bettter than I thought w/ so many musicians. Other1? could that be for Al Gore (possible nominee on a second ballot at a split convention). I really wanted a "Caution", but it looks a little late for that.
They played till after 2 last Saturday at Mardi Gras. You never know.
molitz sounds cool... I saw him in LA Friday night.
Go Jackie!!!
I may not make it...dozin' a bit. Same song, tho!
SICK JAM!
Take it home boys !
great interplay btw Jackie and Mark! Jackie does give us the goods on this one!
Nobody did any Jerry song beter than Jerry. BUT this is better than Joan or Warren. Great energy from Jackie....very fun! I'll take the Sugaree from 10/17/83 Olympic Arena in Lake Placid to open the show for 17 minutes, too!!! But this is just fantastic....great vocals, Jackie! GO BOY!!!

GREAT SHOW LAST NIGHT!!!!!! WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Get out & vote today all you SuperTuesdayers!! I assume Mickey sang Iko?
One thing I've always loved about The Grateful Dead, they never told us what to do, or how to think politically. For Decades they were able to "Learn To Duck" from this position.
As Heads aren't we intelligent enough to make our own decisions about who to vote for?
I do support Obama, but not this way.
If you want to vote great, please do!! It's our process and the country depends on it. But PLEASE don't vote for a candidate beacuse Phil, Mikey and Bob think you should.
Vote because of how YOU THINK!!
How do you know, Bob might be for opening the borders for more illegal immigrants, maybe Mikey thinks more taxes to increase welfare, maybe Jackie Greene feels we shouldn't waste money on alternative energy sources, who knows??
Point being: making voting decision because a public figure endorses someone could have you being mislead.. make up your own mind..
Don't blindly be followers, I think the position these guys have taken tarnishes the music. Grateful Dead music and politics don't mix, it's like drinking and driving. VERY BAD IDEA!
Of course for centuries music has been made to get points across, IE: Protest singers of the 60's..They have their place. BUT THE GRATEFUL DEAD WERE NEVER REAL PROTEST SINGERS, AND I LOVED THAT ABOUT THEM! In the day, instead of having shows about how to stop the war, The Dead had shows where you could FORGET about the war for a little while and experince some real joy.. That was such a vital element of getting through those tough times...
Jerry said, "A fight is a fight, if you are fighting to end war, you are still fighting."
Phil, you are about MUSIC, don't be about POLITICS, at least in public!
When I'm at a show, there's part of me that is there to escape from some of the worlds realities and slip into the magic these musicians are able to create.
Just having Phil and Friends around makes the world a better place. But using the power of his popularity to feed the political machine is sad, it pains me.
Do we really need to have PHIL give public support for a candidte? C'mon Phil!
This is Obama USING your musical gift and talent as a tool for his political betterment.
Rise above it, I thought for sure you were way above all that. It's dissapointing!!!
Stick to the amazing music you have been making for all your life. Being part of the political process is very important as individuals, but being able to choose without influence is equally important.
I think it stinks!! As much as I love your music and as much time and money I spend enjoying your music, I would NEVER SUPPORT this kind of show!! It's BULLSHIT!
UGH!!!
Phil Lesh, Meet Don Henley! Oh, Where's Bono? He's wasn't at the show? UGH>>>>
....It's all over now.
YES WE CAN!
I am so glad the boys have decided to become involved in the future of our country and endorse a candidate like OBAMA. It's about time. OR maybe the TIME IS RIGHT.
THANK YOU.
give us some credit, wild bill. we can think for ourselves even if phi & bobby support obama. i don't understand why you're so upset -- people saw what many think was a great show last night. you'd rather have had no show at all?? and remember this: the dead played a black panther rally in the 60s -- there's a long tradition of liberal and radical left-leaning tendencies in the dead scene. you might not like it, but it's always been there.
Just as anyone has the right to vote for whoever they choose. Any individual or band has the right to throw a fund raiser for who they choose - just as you have the right to believe that is bullsh*t just as I have the right to say your statement is hypocritical and bullsh*t. I guess it just goes on and on. It is funny that you tell Phil what he is all about - hmmm maybe Phil would like his $0.02 on what he is all about?? You compare the 60's to 2008? Change happens dude! Sorry - came looking for a show review and got sidetracked.
"If you don't like the news, go out and make some of your own"
Oh, and a quick review of the show:
SUGAREE ROCKED!!!!
I give tons of credit to the heads, as I am one myslef. My guess would be that a large majority of Heads are of very high intelligence. Lots of college grads, lots of hard working, excellent and kind people..certainly not the Motley Crew types..haha
Supporting The Panthers in the 60's and supporting a presidential candidate are two different fields, vastly different.
I don't mind the left radical positions of the Dead scene. I encourage it, it promotes growth, always has, always will. If anything it keeps us thinking.
I just prefer to keep music and politics seperate.
Let Obama find someone else to be the oband leader for his campaign.
Not Phil and the boys.
Maybe I feel they have this sacred space in my mind where they are clean of getting in the dirty political game. Maybe I just held them in a higher standard than I should have.
I don't know, I just find it dissapointing.
And yes the music was great last night, I am not addressing the music at all. I am merely addressing the point of mixing politics with music. I just think it's a bad idea.
Like at any social gathering the golden rule for smiles all night is, don't discuss politics or religion. I think the same applies with Music and politics, don't mix them.
I think that notion of music and politics has the tendancy to more likely alienate, than it does to bring together.
I don't know, just my feeble opinon.
Just thought I'd add the greeting by Barack to the setlist as it is what began the evening. Kudos to everyone who put this together in so little time. We live in different times and I, for one, am very happy that Phil and the guys chose not to sit on the sidelines any longer. The music was beautiful. Of course it was rough around the edges at times but that wasn't the point, it was the hearts of these guys that really shined through last night. It appeared that everyone who wanted to get in did get in and I saw nothing but smiling faces. The time is now to show what side of the fence that you're on and Barack Obama is the best candidate from the ones that are being offered to bring about that change. There is nothing dirty in supporting this man and it's about time they put their music where their hearts are and how can anyone be disspointed in that? The time for action is now so go out and vote.

Nick, that may be your most possitve post ever!
Big fun last night. Thank you Phil, your friends and all the zoners, cyber and actual. Phil is FIRED UP and doing something about it. I may not agree with his position but I admire him even more for taking a stand, even if you tremble its still important to speak your mind.
I really enjoyed of the show, first set seemed a bit short, but 2 and 3 were real nice, A guitar circus for sure, swirling and beautiful, It sure is fun to watch Bobby play. Very unique style that I never tire of.
The Sugaree was huge and the screams from the crowd were great.
Mark Karen really impressed me as well, I hope this band can find some time for a few more shows.
this is how my angle looked
I'm beginning to get caught up in the groundswell. It feels like 1968 all over again.
Love the flag waving during U.S. Blues. Looks like you had nice seats. Wish I was there!
>>Any reviews from the people who were actually at the show?..thanks<<
I was there..
I walked in not knowing what to expect at all. I have to say that my expectations were exceeded.
Phil had a HUGE smile on his face the whole time, and seemed to focus most of his attention towards gelling with Bobby.
I thought having both Mark & Barry worked well, and even when they were both on the stage the sound didn't sound too crowded.
The third set was pure beauty.. great setlist, well played, and energy to spare. Personally I thought the Wheel was a highlight as well as the over-the-top Sugaree. I thought the Iko was going to be a Not Fade, but I guess the Iko was appropriate for the eve of Fat Tuesday.
In the middle of the Sugaree I turned to my buddy and said "I smell Summer Tour...!"
The politics vibe was weird. I had this feeling of Phil "playing with fire" mixing Grateful Dead magick with partisan politics. I just can't get too excited about politics, especially when all of the candidates who appeal with me are treated as a joke and dismissed long before we ever vote. The US political system is rotten to the core.
The floor on the Warfield was oversold last night :-)
The music last night was great. I frankly didn't expect to see the members of the Dead play together again. It was a nice treat. Great to hear Weir do those old tunes. And I really dug seeing him up there with our young hero JGe.
If the Dead should decide to do future gigs, i hope to be there. They still have it!
Now... I have to go exercise my franchise and vote. How to vote...
From my view at the top of the Warfield...
There were so many things to like about this show--the energy among the band members was tremendous. Considering how quickly they put this show together, it was exceptionally clean--the changes worked so well. A lot of credit to Jackie, Karan, and Sless, who didn't shy away from doing their thing while Phil and Bobby took them through the night.
Somebody asked whether Phil was doing most of the leading. I would characterize it as a very "Democratic" night. Phil didn't need to assert himself by throwing down any bombs. They took turns and mostly just enjoyed themselves.
The star of the night? John Molo. He is such a strong backbone that it freed up Mickey to do whatever he wanted, and Mickey just seemed to thrive with the freedom. They were both exceptionally solid.
Also - five band members sharing vocals created some of those stellar rock moments. We were commenting up at the top that it was some of the best vocals we'd heard at any show in the post-Jerry era.
I can't even pick a high point of the night--there were simply no low points. All in all, an incredible night.
I took a few photo's. Posted at:
www.littlebeast.com/obamafeb4
Enjoy.
I was happy to see it was a full show with no politicians' present. I watched it on the live stream. I did some late night paper work, and cranked up my PC stereo with a sub-woofer.
I could have done without Playin', and the Other, but these are easy no practice(or discussion) songs for Phil and Bob to put on a setlist.
Sless was outstanding as usual. I wish they let him play lead instead of pedal only. Jackie fit right in as well.
Mark Karan had some pop compared to the Other Ones gigs. He was solid. (He's been at it for 10 years). His biggest gig ever.
Bobby, was a bit of a space cowboy as usual. Nobody can copy his real sound. He is a lot better when he is not singing. He had some strange timing on Minglewood, FOTD,and Come Together. He smoked Sugaree, but the camera was not on him. Bob and Phil with the kids makes it sound authentic. Throwing Stones was the rarest song of the night. Green & Karan had some problems on transitions and scales, but it was still a good version.
Mickey finally picked a song he could sing. Aiko was pretty fun. Acoustic set was sweet, especially The Deal with Jackie on lead vocal. Nice ragtime feel.
Happy hangover after a Superbowl Sunday. Overall pretty damn good for a Monday. Not as good as Mardi Gras.

I thought it was an awesome event for an awesome cause...but I support Obama. I guess if they were playing for someone else I might not have liked it as much, but I'd still give the Dead credit for standing up for what they believe. These guys are the core (what's left) of what started this whole wonderful scene and I think they have the right to decide what to do with their music. If that alienated a few Heads along the way...I guess they are willing to pay that price. I think in the long run we will all keep coming back for the wonderful music even if we don't all agree all the time. Hope for a summer tour!
It was all good. I thought "Throwing Stones" was an interesting choice for a political fundraiser. "The politicians throwing stones, while the kids they dance, they shake their bones, 'cause it's all too clear we're on our own, singin' Ashes, Ashes, all fall down." Nice counterpoint to the "Obama will save us" vibe.
I thought Obama's little film was funny. I don't recall his exact words, but what I heard was something like this:
"I want to thank Phil, Bob and Mickey, and all the rest of you young people... Sit down and enjoy the show."
My sweetie said what she got out of the speech was "Young people sit down!"
I think Obama had no clue what kind of event he was doing this film for.
>>> The floor on the Warfield was oversold last night :-)
It wasn't on the third section back (right under the loge section of the balcony) -- plenty of room to move further back on the floor. What can you expect near the very front? However, there was the inevitable obnoxious dude who shows up out of the blue and just couldn't shut up for 5 seconds during the 2nd electric set (and some of the acoustic) -- can't these types just stay home and watch the simulcast?
As for the music itself, I thought the show was pretty good - probably a notch better than I had expected. I thought it was great they had both Karan and Sless. It's great to see Karan looking good and playing again (almost thought he looked a bit like Kimock out there with the thick head of curly hair). Jackie probably had the best solo of the evening (Sugaree was it?) - a real bluesy thing -- he's got a good feel for the blues, even if it wasn't anything I haven't heard before. He has his impressive moments. Karan, on the other hand, never really blows me away, but he knows the music and certainly doesn't step on anyone's toes. Phil was huge, as always, and Bobby sounded pretty good, for the most part. Certainly sings Other One way better than Phil.
Got a good laugh about the fact that Phil forgot to mention Mickey at the end during the band intros. Who would've thunk it??
I watched as much as I could, on the webcast. Being in Pittsburgh, PA and having to work at 9am (until 9pm) today made it tough to make it past "Eyes Of The World."
But from what I saw & heard...I was LOVING every minute of it! Jackie Greene was superb. Mark Karan played the best I've ever heard him play. Molo was Molo - simply amazing. And Barry Sless? What can you say? Sickness from note one. I've not yet seen anyone comment on Steve Molitz, whom I thought was GREAT. He had nice touch and good choice of sounds! I wish he'd had a B-3, too rather than that VK unit (or whatever it was he was playing to get an organ sound), but he was great nonetheless.
Phil was definitely all smiles and having fun directing traffic when it was his turn. Definitely agree with the "democracy" that was going on onstage.
Jackie seemed to throw Bobby quite a few solos last night and did ol' Weir shy away?! HECKSNO!! He punched 'em all out!! Great job playing by Bobstar!
Mickey looked SO at home with this group. Really seemed to enjoy the whole thing, although I will say I would've liked to see him on the kit a bit more.
I'm psyched for the re-broadcast so I can see it all again and ALL of it, this time!!!
TOUR!!!
>>Mickey looked SO at home with this group<<
Mickey looked like an old fuddy duddy banging away with his mallets......he added NOTHING to the overall sound imho.
Holy shit. Wow. They brought it.
I had medium-low expectations for this show, having seen some ho-hum TOO/TD shows in recent years and doing some simple math to determine how much time the band could have possibly rehearsed. I've been stoked on Phil's band of late though, so I assumed that whatever trainwrecks would occur, Phil's band would pretty much keep it going. I was Dead wrong.
NO TRAINWRECKS! Maybe some close calls, but they were HOT HOT! Bobby was possibly a little shakey on Minglewood, and Mickey doesn't seem to know that many verses of Iko, but the whole thing "clicked" and there was serious energy.
First of all, the crowd was relatively mellow, with most of the yahoos and "kids" excluded by the exclusive ticket dealio and attendant limit. Not to mention it was Monday night. Wasn't too much old family either... I didn't even see any of Mickey's Hell's Angel's buddies... Relatively straight crowd, only reefer mostly. Drinking policy at the Warf keeps anybody from having too much fun and seeing the show at the same time... But the crowd came to play just like the band, and very few seats were used all night up in the balcony.
The taped Obama intro was a nice touch; it's clear that unlike most Democratic senators, Obama is not particularly familiar with the Dead, but oh well. He's also a very tired, busy man these days.
The entire show was a Phil bomb. He was obviously Fired Up(!) and had amazing energy. I was surprised he sang Half-Step, but he sang as well all night as he ever, ever has...
Holy shit they played an acoustic (mini) set!!! At the Warfield!
Holy shit it even sounded good! I hate Deal, but Jackie ripped it up. He was mostly a second-fiddle on organ most of the night (with a few cool riffs in there), but he silenced the critics with his mandolin playing- he's no virtuoso, I'd imagine, but Ripple was beautiful.
The Other One was a total face melt, with the band on all cylinders. When Phil dropped the bomb to start the song proper, the lights lit up, the place lit up, and shit got really heavy for a few minutes. Molitz on fire, Bobby doing what only he can, and the Molo/Hart thing really clicking.
Throwing stones is the song most likely to go astray, but it seems Bobby kept the train on the tracks for this one, and it was a powerful version, very new, very Ratdog not Dead, very Bobby. It was solid.
If there has to be a Mickey song, at least it's Iko! Maybe nobody told Mickey about the 17-minute Iko we had last week at the Mardi Gras show, but what the hell. It was good, and everybody got to take some easy solos.
U.S. Blues. How creative... Actually done quite well though, kept the place rockin'. The old dude with the peace flag added a little weird to a fantastic fanale.
Anyway, show finished 12:15 on the dot. Probably the best show I've seen in years, including with any of these guys! Phil's band is hot, but I can actually say that the "Core 3" totally blew me away, and I'm often critical of their collaborations/antics. They obviously rehearsed a bit and totally met the challenge they had set out for themselves. It was always a great thing when GD shows were on radio or TV because they stepped up; this high-publicity event brought out the best in each member, and I've never seen 'em like that, not in a long, long time.
As a note, MK was hot, and kept Bobby on track all night. Sless was superlative, but you knew that. It actually didn't get guitared-out like I thought it would; Larry might have been too much here, but Barry and MK were a perfect tag-team.
I actually hope they don't tour as the core 3 or 4 again soon, and I doubt they will. A tour would sap their energy and make it a job and they hate that part of each other. This is what's needed. Play the Warf a few runs a year, keep the chops up, and tour with your other outfits the rest of the year.
God Bless the Grateful Dead!
From the center of the balcony- this was THE SHIT people!!! Sold my extra to the first person I saw with an upraised finger and stoked someone in. Great scene inside- lots of people seeing each other for the first time in ages- many hugs and shrieks from the reunited. Walked in to see the T-shirts with the line-up including Karan and Sless! So knew the guitar team was here! Yes the Obabma video was hilarious! When he told the crowd to sit down and enjoy the music the whole place just fell out! Hadn't heard a group guffaw like that since Bob used to pull some classic lyrical gaffes! When the curtain rose and the Playin' started we were home! I've gone home and not felt as at Home as I do at a show! Playin was sweet and tasty- Barry showed up (from Hawaii?) mid-way through the jam. Phil stepped up to direct the shift to Brown Eyed big fat shift and we're off and running again. Phil showcased the slightly re-arranged Half Step and I thought his voice was great- he is singing better than ever I think these days. And having fun?!??!! Oh man he is grinning from ear to ear bouncing and bopping having a ball! Bob seemed to take the challenge "Oh you re-arranged that? Well I've got a New- New Minglewood (again! lol). Not the smoothest seemed to take everyone a bit of time to figure out his timings- I split for a P-break and when I returned they had found the groove or abandoned the new changes and it was good ol' Minglewood again "T right here in San Fransisco!" Come together was also pretty good and made sense for the night. Shocked when the curtain came down. A short break curtain up and OH MY GOD! It's Phil on standup bass! 250+ shows and I never thought I'd see that! Acoustic mini-set was sweetness! Deep Elem was fat and slinky, Friend conjured up images of Jerry. The Deal was sweet if not too jammy and then Ripple. Ripple! Can't speak for anyone else but that was the tearjerker moment for me. Here I was in The Warfield Theater in 2008, 13 years after Jerrry's passing hearing Ripple and just blissing hard! Another break and some fun chats with the gang around me and then- I love even saying this- The 3rd Set!- Yeah Baby! First of all let me state that under the influence of nothing stonger than kind bud- China Cat thru Eyes was effing epic!! The guy behind me kept checking in with me- "It's not just me right? I know I'm high but this is awesome right?" LOL The jam into Wheel was sweet and slow Barry's pedal steel playing was just amazing all night long- complex but comforting and just drew me in. Other One jam started but could've been Truckin- Guy behind leans in and asks "Do you think Bobby's got the balls to throw down an Other One? As soon as the words left his mouth- Phil bombs the place and we're off! As good as it gets theses days! Big fat Phil runs skating around, ducking and weaving through the twin Karan and Sless leads. When we wound down into Sugaree I was all set to take it easy but it was not to be so. Jackie has really stepped it up I think. Wasn't so sold at the Greek last September but last week at the Phillmore and Mardis Gras shows I thought he has really gelled. His vocals on Sugaree were expressive and shining! I know Jerry was smiling down (or up! LOL ) at the goings on. Mark and Jackie really seemed to enjoy the interplay on the jams Bob looked a little left out on the far side of the stage. And they just hit peak after peak after peak! Settling down for the verses only to crank it back up over and over again! Stunning! Eyes just made sense- Phil on vocals and again a fine job. Everyone was up and dancing and most people seemed to have their PermaGrins installed when I would turn around to look at everyone. Throwing Stones was an odd moment for me. Not a huge Ratdog fan particularly so haven't seen the song in many moons- on one hand stoked to hear it on the other hand it signaled being near the end of the show- Boohoo!- But I figure as much as I griped about the combo back in the day- a Stones>Not Fade would be a fine way to cap things off and about as familiar as it gets but no! We start clapping the beats, Mickey points at us to keep it up and suddenly its Iko Iko with Mickey on vocals! You go Mick!! Fun, Phat and Rollicking! The Playin reprise was a given- only way to end and tie it up neatly. You'd think it was an easy piece but no!! They struggled to drift into it smoothly finally latching on a twisted version in another key or something before they started towards the lyrics- almost pulled it off then Bobby signals to go back to the odd phrasing again before hitting the right notes and nailing the dive back into Playing. Woof! Interestingly enough Bobby seemed a bit grumpy or gruff all evening- seemed to be the one having the least amount of fun up there- yes I know I could well be wrong but thats how it seemed to me. When they came back Phil did his Obabma/Organ donor rap and intro'd the band. He intro'd everyone but Mickey. Bob starts his little Headcount get out and vote rap. Sless leans up and tells Phil he forgot Mick and so while Bobby's still taliking about Headcount Phil says "and of course Mickey Hart!" Bob actually looked pissed at being interrupted and went into US Blues w/o finishing his schtick! Lighten up Weir-d one! lol Everyone came out frontstage for an arm in arm bow. Again everybody looked so happy Mickey and Phil grinning away, Jackie and Mark congratulating each other- everyone looking like they just had a ball and Bob looking like he was just ready to go home. Anybody else get that impression or was it just me? Lastly as I re-read this I realize I left out Steve Molitz on keys. He really did a great job too. Not always prominent in the mix but his solos were very kind- esp in Sugaree where he drove the initial peaks. On the Other One he busted out a great funky synth sound that was like the Dead meet the Crystal Method! All in all- what a night. I'll go back and do it again given the chance any time or any place. Phil is just on fire these days- best playing from him- or at least as good as I'd ever seen and I saw 95% of all Bay Area shows from 82-95. Thanks to the boys and to the family for making this night special. Don't know when I'll have the chance to feel like that again so I savored it. 26 years after the bus first picked me up- the music is still relevant, it still speaks to me and is still capable of transportation. Do you realize how lucky we are???? An aside- my gal was at home checking out the webcast and she thought it was cool- a bit choppy but she had no trouble acessing it and the stream worked great! If you hear someone yelling "Hey Monkey" between the 1st and second sets that was me! She asked if I could holler out to her to see if she could hear it at home and she did! A fine time indeed. If you were there it was good to see you- if not- I missed you even if I don't know you. Webcast again twice today and sure to be available soon- if ya didn't hear it- GET IT! Love to all! Oh, and a quick review of the show:
SUGAREE ROCKED!!!!
She's right you know.
Looked like Jackie got a recent hair cut and used less product.
I think Mardi Gras Phil was a better show, but it was great seeing Phil, Mickey and Booby smiling and playing together last night. Jackie didn't sing much but when he did ... chills.
Forget Obama, Barry Sless for President!
I love it when people say the GD were never politically minded. We 'Heads CAN think for ourselves. It's nice to see them show support for someone. If you think for a minute Obama went out & HIRED these guys, you're insane. This was the brainchild of Phil and/or Bobby and/or Mickey. 3 very intelligent men who happen to find that they have something in common again and it helped them find the other things. I think it's great.
>>Mickey looked like an old fuddy duddy banging away with his mallets......he added NOTHING to the overall sound imho.
You're a tool. What do you want? Do you want Mickey from 1989? Do you want Phil from 1977? How about Bobby from 1973? While we're at it, how's about digging up ol' Jer from 1990! Maybe you can even revive all of the keyboardists!! There's an idea!
You have these 3 magicians who were never the best musicians at each of their instruments - no one ever staked that claim for them. You have 3 magicians at making the Grateful Dead what it was. Go listen to Cornell 77 for the remainder of your days and enjoy the next 50 or so years of your life being a crotchitty grump.
These guys sounded great - all 3 of them. Would have been nice to see Mickey on the kit more, but if you think he added nothing, you're both deaf AND - blind.
Sorry to bring harshness around here, but that crap just doesn't fly w/ me, Fitzman.
lighten up Francis.......where did you come from, ratdog.org?
Thanks for the reviews! Many of the same feelings I had after Mardis Gras. Phil is on Fire!!!! The stream sucks so I am only getting a taste! Deep Elem and Ripple on stand up bass? You are some lucky heads!
Phil is channeling some amazing musical energy with his new apprentice Jackie Green. For Jackie to step on stage with these musical giants and perform top notch night after night is really impressive. For someone like Warren or Herring you would expect that. But Jackie was playing bar gigs in Sacramento two years ago.
Thanks for bringing it Phil. We want more!
OMG! I still cant believe i was there. what a night. it was wonderful to see you all again.
great pics Mike.
I thought the show last night was amazing. I think you really needed to be there to be at one with the crowd to really feel the vibe that was in the Warfield last night. I would say this is my favorite show to date this year. The streaming footage I am watching right now does not do the show justice. The sound to the right side of the stage was fantastic. My highlights were the Other One, Throwing Stones, and Brown Eyed Women. Oh and the Wheel and Eyes of the World were pretty fun as well. Great seeing so many Zoners out last night including Doogles, Emily, Jessica & Scott, Canyon, Michelle, and many many others. I am sure once the recordings are released you can listen to this the way it was heard by us at the show instead of the skipping audio from iclips.
PS - For as old as these guys are, this show really blew off the roof. I wanna see them as much as possible before we never have the chance to do so ever again.
thanks canyon nice pics dude, and sinatra, looks like a great show,
nice reviews keep em coming,
even though rev's review looks like
one of them funky old computer print out things
its still great, he he :}
and just look at those groovy westie gals
digging the groovy vibes , woo hoo
Wow....great Photos there. Looks like an incredible party.
So did Captain Kirk show up?
lol
GREAT PICS FRANK !!!!! You Rule !
I had an amazing trip this past weekend. The super bowl might have been the best I've ever seen. Go Giants! Thanks for having us over Doogs. Monday was a beautiful day and we spent the afternoon in Haight Ashbury and Golden Gate Park. The weather and company were perfecto. Not a cloud in the sky. From there we headed to the Warfield where we were about to see Phil, Bobby and Mickey play together for the first time in almost four years. I must say that I am not an Obama supporter (Ron Paul baby) and I agree with sentiments that the Dead should't be mixing music and politics. Even though I don't share the band's support of Obama, I still loved the show last night. The band sounded excellent. It was so great seeing Barry tear it up on the pedal steel with the boys. I've been hoping to see that for the last couple of years. It would have been nice to see him play some guitar too. Mark Karan looked and sounded great as well. I haven't seen him play in a while. He had some great interplay with Barry and Bobby. All the guitars blended perfectly. Jackie put on a great performance and his vocals were excellent. Everyone in the band seemed pretty happy to be there. This was one of the most enjoyable shows I've been to in a long time. It was great seeing everyone again and I certainly wasn't expecting to get back out there so soon. Phil was running the show last night and the show was killer. Everyone was locked in. Let's hope there are more shows with this lineup in the future. For all you naysayers who thought it would never happen again, guess what, it happened and it was awesome. Now we just need to get Billy back in the fold and take the show on the road. Summer tour with a nice festival at the end. Liberty Tour 2008. Thanks for a real good time.

We were most fortunate to be able to get 2 floor seats for the show on Friday evening when they went on sale here and much to our delight, our “peeps” all got tickets as well. We lined up at the Warfield at 4:00pm and it was a media circus with a big truck full of broadcasting equipment for the simulcast, a bunch of the band’s gear cases on Taylor Street around the corner, and all 3 major TV networks with vans & cameras covering this event. There was a brief press conference with the “core 3” and at around 6:30pm we finally got in. The crowd was real slow to get in, with all 2,000 tickets at will call.
The atmosphere was charged and electric and the Warf was decorated and donned with red, white, & blue streamers, flags, and small patriotic banners. Everyone was given the Deadheads for Obama poster as they came in. Showtime was supposed to be at 7:30pm, but the video screen dropped at 8:30pm. That was after it kept getting stuck, much to delight of the crowd, who continued to cheer on the dropping of the video screen, which got stuck a quarter to a third of the way down 6 or 7 times before finally dropping and the crowd went wild. This was the kind of enthusiasm I don’t think I recall hearing in the last few years. It was THAT kind of excitement. A video screen came on with a message from Barack Obama thanking Phil, Bob, & Mickey, and expressing appreciation for this event, etc… Towards the end, Barack said, “sit down and enjoy the music,” and the audience booed loudly and many laughed hysterically… Sit down? Are you kidding? It’s ok Barack… It was classic.
The curtain rose, to those liltingly familiar notes of “Playing In The Band,” a perfect opener, with the stage packed out with Steve Molitz, Bob Weir, John Molo, Phil Lesh, Mark Karan, Mickey Hart, & Jackie Greene. Barry Sless would soon join on Pedal Steel Guitar. Phil was beaming all night and grinning from ear to ear, Mickey too showed a lot of joy and fervor in his playing all night, and Bobby was Bobby, with strong guitar playing all night, surrounded with a sometimes distant and lost look about him. It would be easy to pick apart the occasional vocal flubs (mostly Weir), the looking around during many jams and transitions with the “so who is going to solo next,” look, or the play it close to the vest song choices, but forget all that! This was a ginormous event, and the thrill of the night could have taken your last breathe away throughout the night. Why? Well, they were INTO IT… It was as if the boys were waiting for a “reason” or a “purpose” to play together again and many of us always knew this day would come, we were just hoping it wasn’t at someone’s funeral!
Music highlights IMHO: Without question, the energy high point of the night was the 3rd set The Wheel > The Other One > SUGAREE, followed by a short but sweet Eyes of the World. Jackie & Mark Karan absolutely shredded on the Sugaree and Jackie continues to own this tune, and that is saying a lot following numerous solid versions from Warren Haynes & Joan Osborne over the years. The pedal steel work of Barry Sless was a welcome enhancement and I thought elevated every tune he was on. Having a post-chemo Mark Karan looking young and spirited was so sweet, and when he was off stage for some songs, he could be easily seen sitting backstage and singing the words to every song. Great interplay from Bobby & Mark, and Mark & Jackie throughout the night. Molo & Mickey were pounding all night, keeping the backbeat. The “Come Together,” was slow and snaky and the crowd was really into that. Seeing Phil come out and then Bobby & Mickey in front of the curtain after the 1st set was a bit odd, but I appreciate their passion. They were fired up and ready to go! The acoustic set was stellar, with Phil on the upright. Jackie shined vocally all night, especially on Deal, and what can you say about Phil & Bob handling the “Ripple” together, it was beyond nostalgia. Hearing “Throwing Stones” was a real treat too, despite Weir-dness on the vocal phrasings and a couple of botched lines. It still had teeth, thanks to Phil and the drummers. Mickey’s “Iko Iko” was surprisingly enjoyable. A final highlight, the happy faces and group bow at the end of the night, with the “core 3 hugged in tight at center stage. Hopefully, Garcia is not rolling in his grave over the political connection. Heck, so what if it took an election to put the 4 year drought aside, this was one helluva evening and it was like a happy ending to the reunion of one of America’s most dysfunctional families! I am so glad I was alive and well to see this and share it with my wife, and so many great friends. You were there in spirit!
Yeah - great pics, Frank!
From the first minutes of the concert, it was evident to me that there was an unmistakable quality to the music present: a refinement and delicacy (even at the thundering heights of Sugaree) in the weavings of the independent musicians around their common axis. And this even with the mix sounding muddy, hollow and tinny where I was on the middle level of the Floor a pace in front of the balcony edge. Happily, the sound improved for the 3rd set, which was deeply satisfying to say the least.
I think there are a number of factors as to why this phenomenon (of refinement) occurred. The presence, of course, of 3 of the masters of this art form. Well, 4 really at this point, if you include Molo - and I do. Also, the performance quality of Mark Karan, Steve Molitz and Barry Sless who all play as they serve the song and not a pre-conceived concept of musician-identity, which I think is an achilles heel for the otherwise incredibly talented Jackie Green.** Steve and Mark both use a wide range of tones throughout a show, really bringing distinction to each song and cadence to the whole night; they also don't overpower the other musicians. I'd like to hear Molitz brought up in the mix in general.
**I like Jackie Green, but find him largely limited to a rock/blues realm - which is not a bad realm, but there are other realms than these. To his credit, his strength as a blues/rock musician in the recent Phil and Friends lineup has made that the finest rock/blues band I would venture to say on the face of the planet. These last shows at the Philmore and Civic were fantastic, raucous events of joy and power. And who knows? The man is a young man at the beginning of his career - wheresoever shall his path lead (especially what with his apprenticeship with the psychedelic masters)? New realms indeed may be on the horizon here. Sometimes I feel him falling prey to an idea that a strong performance is a loud, fast, over-the-top one. Again, there are other kinds of strong performances than that kind. I do have to say he held his own in the beautiful Mountains of the Moon at the Philmore and the deeply psychedelic Other One last night. So, the young jedi is advancing in his mastery. So anyway, in this scenario, the young rock star vibe was tempered very well by the other musicians' craft and again to his credit, Jackie's deference to them.
It was a great show last night; I kept thinking I was missing wonderful things in the 1st and 2nd sets due to the sound issues in my area. I'd hear glints and shimmers of Molitz' and Sless' playing like will-o'-the-wisps in a twilit forest. So when the sound improved (though still did not perfect) in the 3rd set, it got to a point where I could fill in the gaps in my head/heart to really hear what they were playing/intending to play, and it was largely excellent - especially considering the impromptu nature of the band situation.
There was also the Warfield factor. Power of place/history can be considerable....love the Warfield!
Another factor...
This band accomplished on the bulk of the songs (especially the 3rd set string from China Cat through Eyes) a rendering of them that revealed the essence of their song-identities. There are a set and quality of punctuations in addition to the basic chord structure and lyrics that make a certain song that certain song. While you can interpret this in may interesting and successful ways, you still can't stray too far from it or it won't be that song anymore. I think when you play the song true to it's essence is when the realm of magic is accessed. There was no mistaking that Sugaree - the vital Archetype that is it's own being (the Sugaree God or the Sugaree Spirit) - was in the house - was, essentially invoked by the players.
With this in mind, I think Days Between would have been perfect for this show. For me (and for others I've talked to - though maybe not for everyone) it is a haunting reminder of the interconnectedness of life (esp. human life) on the planet and a call to compassionate, courageous, steady living in the face of uncertainty and darkness. I think it would have been a very deep inspiration to action (in this case voting, or at least dialoging about relevant current events)/reminder of why people are caring about this election.

Well the last one was Jackie belting out "Shake it, shake it, sugaree..."
After that I put the camera away just danced for the rest of the night.
Nice Pics.............and a real good time
One of the things that made last night special for me was the opportunity to sit in the exact same KILLER front row balcony seat I had for one of my all time favorite Grateful Dead shows almost exactly 26 years ago (2/17/82). It's so funny how much Bob & Mickey have aged since that amazing night in 1982, and Phil and I haven't!!!
Having just watched the show again on my computer there is just no way to describe how different, and BETTER, it was to be in the room. This is not something that most who will read this need to be told, but since so many watched the show on a computer feed I think it does need to be said..... YOU HAD TO BE THERE!
The energy and vibe in our beloved old theater last night was just the best. Everyone was fired up to be there, but probably because of the late notice of the event the crowd was almost devoid of rowdy younger fans and "wookies", which gave things a great, relaxed old school feel before the show; festive anticipation yet laid back in classic Bay Area fashion.
As was mentioned in another review, from the strong humorous reactions to the video screen struggling to get down and Obama's klutzy remark about sitting down it was clear this was a happy, focused crowd.
Even from my seat 10 feet from the mixer the sound was muddy at the start and the vocals were almost non-existent through-out the first set, which I thought was just like the old days as well!
Despite this I thought every song in the first set had it's moments and I was able to really enjoy each one (probably because I could still hear Phil well from my seat!)
I was really surprised at how good the sound of the BAND was; I really have no complaints to make about ANYONE’S playing, I thought each musician on stage was working together for the good of the band, and considering they couldn't have rehearsed much at all this was WAY more than I expected.
As usual I thought Barry was excellent, but I was very pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed Mark Karan's playing as well. I like him but in the past I've been bored quickly with him, but I thought last night he was right on with everything, and I also thought he and Jackie complimented each other VERY well.
Mickey is Mickey, with his mallets endlessly pounding on an array of drums. He is a hero of mine, but IMO this mallets thing really limits what he can add to a band; but he still CAN and DID add to this band. Sometimes it was just a low grumbling thunder and sometimes that thunder got into Phil and Molo, and then the music, the theater, and probably Market Street would LIFT UP and rock! It was great to hear that added dimension again; Mickey can REALLY change the dynamic of the sound.
And what can you say about Phil Lesh? He is simply a legend and he backs that up every time he takes the stage. His playing was classic and he pushed, stroked, danced and thundered with the band, leading them all night. Damn he's good.
As for the political stuff, I thought it was strange, but strange is ALWAYS OK with me at a show with this cast of characters, and it was short and harmless. If you were into it great and if you weren't it was easy enough to avoid.
I really enjoyed the acoustic set, but ultimately it was a bit of a throw-away to me. I would have much preferred no acoustic set and longer 1st and 2nd electric sets because the band needed the time to gel, but that is picking nits; everything was fun last night, and I do enjoy two set breaks allowing for more mingling and stretching the party, which it most definitely was.
For the third set the sound was much more dialed in, as was the band, and it was excellent from the get-go. I loved everything they played, but I was really amazed at the groovy and smooth transitions from China Cat to The Wheel to The Other One; all seamless from a group that has not played together.
The entire third set was a highlight for me, but what stands out in my mind is the rousing secondary ovation for Jackie after his solo in the excellent Sugaree, where the crowd cheered, it began to die down and then it just rose again; a very cool and well deserved tip of the cap from us picky old fans. WELL DONE, JACKIE!
I also loved the way they floated into the Playin' reprise; teasing it, falling back, teasing it again in odd ways, backing off again and then sloooowly coming back into the tune, using that classic Grateful Dead way of being amazingly patient with the music, allowing it to breath. I thought it was great.
Understandably it was much like a Phil & Friends show, but it WASN'T a P&F show; beyond the obvious fact that Bob & Mickey were playing, there was something subtly different in the air and in the music. These reunions are filled with potential disasters of all kinds, but last night everything just worked, which made it the only place in the world I wanted to be. Doesn't that sound familiar?
So almost 28 years after first seeing those guys in that room, and 26 years after seeing them from the exact same spot I was there with them once again. It felt like home.
(from 26 years ago - somehow they look a bit younger!)
awesome man, thanks so much for sharing

Didn't you call me from home as you were sick that day. It sure looked like you though....you must have a twin!!!
Pretty good review of the whole Deadheads for Obama event on Relix at
http://www.relix.com/Features/Daily_News/Lesh_Unit es_with_Weir_and_Hart_for_Deadheads_for_Obama_2008 02052732.html
Yeah, I heard Sylvia had to call in sick to work that day. I dunno, I'm just sayin'.
GREAT shots, Chris! I love the way your pics tend to have the exact same perspective of where I'm checking out the shows.
I especially love that photo of Molo. Look at his eye contact!
Tore_up, yours are really good, too!
my boss is away today and the first thing he said to me when he called this morning was: "wow, you dont sound good."
lol
Good review for the most part, but I take issue with the section concerning the Ron Paul wookie who caused a ruckus.
Somehow I doubt that Richard B. Simon, the reviewer, was down on the floor when the Ron Paul supporter PUSHED and SHOVED his way in front of us, elbowing anyone in his way to unfurl his banner. He came down shouting and acting like a lunatic. Ironically, the first time he tried to get his banner up was during Throwing Stones. We politely asked him to move before he hoisted his freshly painted RON PAUL sign. He was not cool, and started shouting about "FREE SPPECH" and expressed his anger at the concept of DEADHEADS FOR OBAMA.
I had NO problem jumping up and pulling the dang thing down. He was free to display the thing on the sidewalk if he wanted people to see it, but his intention was to disrupt the show and try and put himself in the spotlight. Comparing the incident to something seen at a George Bush rally? Thanks for the laugh ~
>>And while the band sang of political stone-throwing in a time with a disaffected youth and an apathetic electorate, the Ron Paul supporters tried to unfurl a banner in support of their candidate. It didn't last long - the banner was pulled down.
It was a bizarre moment, and one that spoke to the tension between naturally subversive rock and roll and political advocacy, especially of a particular candidate. Pulling down the sign was something you might have seen at a George Bush rally - perhaps it seemed appropriate in the spirit of supporting Obama, but it was a disturbing violation of the Paul supporters' right to be seen, and heard. And so it was oddly antithetical to what is supposed to be the Obama vibe.
I was watching the banner stuff from the rail but never had any idea it was for Ron Paul, all we saw from the front was Tyvek, I actually thought it was an Obama banner that the operators couldn't figure out how to display properly, we were cracking jokes about it.
Sorry, but I couldn't go to anything that was sponsored by a political candidate that i did not support. Its not as if he needed my money. When I tried to stream the show, I couldn't get into the site until the acoustic set. The sound was awful. I lost the stream before the third set. Then I was going to check out the stream Tuesday and couldn't get online due to computer malfunction with the cable. Guess I wasn't supposed to see it. I will tempt fate and download it from etree and hope for the best.
Thanks for the reviews and photos!
When we were asked to hold up our "Deadheads for Obama" signs, I couldn't get behind holding up a sign for a political candidate. I could, though, hold up a sign for a concept that I support! So I held up two fingers in a peace sign. When I looked around, a lot of other people were doing the same thing. Not many were actually holding up their Obama signs.
I saw the guy unfurl the Ron Paul banner down in front, which was a nice subversive gesture, but I didn't mind when other people pulled it down. After all, it was a banner and blocked people's views. If it was the size of the other signs (and maybe if the guy was nice about it), I'm guessing it wouldn't have been pulled down.
>>concerning the Ron Paul wookie who caused a ruckus<<
thanks for clarifying this incident....I came back upfront in the middle of the scuffle and I didn't know what to think. It was disturbing. Thank you for informing me and others on what went down.
thanks for the pics. I even saw my own ugly mug in a few. cool.

Thanks - duly updated
David Gans on KPFA's "Dead to the World" last night played some of the show and called it the best Grateful Dead music he's seen live since 1993.
Interesting to think what '93 date he was talking about, but wow, that's as heavy a statement about Monday as a fella could make... And he's probably right.
let's not get carried away.........
What can I say which has not already been said?
- Seeing the boys smiling and laughing and having a great time together was awesome.
- Having Barry and Jackie throw their excellent vibe into the mix was awesome.
- The energy of hope for change, regardless of whether it comes through Obama or not was awesome. Political activism/involvement is a good thing!
- A 3 set show with an acoustic set - awesome!
- Helpful heads who jump started our car after the show was awesome
- Being home before 2am was really awesome
Not so awesome:
Obama telling us to "sit down and enjoy the music, " that boy needs to go to a real show!
The "heads" who beat on the Ron Paul activists, show some love people.
My girls getting shut out on a setlist.
Dead car battery after the show
The show not being a 3 night run!!!
Here's to hoping for a summer tour! Come on boys, let's shake this nation up! Bring back the magic.
>>The "heads" who beat on the Ron Paul activists, show some love people.
Nobody beat up the Ron Paul wookie. He was welcome to enjoy the show and parade around in his Ron Paul t-shirt, and say whatever he wanted, up until the point when his "rights' impinged on the rights of the other paying concert goers. I don't care if his 30 foot banner said MICKEY MOUSE for President, he had no business pushing and shoving his way onto the floor, and obstructing the view of the people behind him.
Never got around to a review, and probably nobody is looking at this thread anymore anyway, but, a few observations anyway...
Was in the third section of the floor -- not the way-back where the tables are, in front of that -- and there was plenty of room. Looked pretty damned crushed ahead of us though. Naturally, at some point, a large drunken idiot, of a look and age to have been a frat boy deadhead during the final tailspin in '95, with his pristine white dead t-shirt and backwards cap with a GD logo, blonde hair and unshaven -- yes, I'm hoping somebody recognizes themselves here -- stationed himself nearby and chattered for much of the acoustic set (actually had to yell out "shut up already", when by the time the first chorus of Ripple came around, he literally had not stopped talking since the very beginning of the song -- ie. all the way through Barry's opening steel solo and all the way through both halves of the first verse) and much of the second set. Finally moved away from him late in the second set; shoulda done that much sooner, but I hate being forced to give up my space by a drunken idiot who sings along and does faux rap gestures to Throwing Stones.
Oh, yeah, the music: sorry 'bout that rant.
The first set, though short, dispelled my worries of a repeat of the good vibes of the last dead tour: everyone was all smiles. Mickey was more or less a non-entity, in part because Molo didn't really hold back enough to leave much space for him, but, like Phil and Bob and the rest of the band, seemed to really be having a good time. Jackie sang a wonderful Brown-Eyed Women, with plenty of instrumental verses sandwiched in between. Minglewood, which I'd grown tired of twenty years ago or more, was actually reasonably fresh, with jams that got further out than the usual boring blues crapola that used to accompany that one.
Acoustic set was sweet, much better than the one at Jackie's birthday, largely because of the presence of Barry on pedal steel (not an acoustic instrument, but who cares). Best tune there, to my surprise, was Deal, another one that had played itself out for me several decades ago -- they found a great groove, and the acoustic instrumentation, plus Barry, gave it a new feel. Nicely done.
Third set had plenty of great jams, highlighted, again oddly fo me, by Sugaree, particularly the solo by Jackie, which elicited a major crowd scream and which the other musicians on stage clearly dug. Eyes was better than it often is in Phil's bands, largely because it was not as down-tempo as Phil usually plays it. By the time Aiko came around, I didn't even mind that Mickey was going to sing, there had been such great music. And then the lead-in to the Playin reprise kind of knocked my socks off: somehow, during the standard noodling that precedes the launch back into it (you know: duh-duh-DUH, dud-dud-DUH, DUH-duh-Duh-duh-duh-duh; repeated over and over) Phil, Mark, and Bob found themselves in different keys that sort of cancelled each other out in the strangest of ways, creating this marvelously simultaneously full and empty space -- Mark and Phil were hugely smiling at each other during this part.
U.S. Blues was kind of perfunctory, but didn't care at that point. But they should have let Mark Karan sing at least the first verse:
Give me five, I'm still alive!
Still checking this thread, very nice review!
There is no escape from the "drunken party boy/girl"; they are eternal. To me they're a constant reminder that no matter how great a moment or place may be, the world is always an imperfect place; and they also represent a cautionary reminder that I too can sometimes be that person (talking during music, not young & blond with my hat tuned backward).
>>>creating this marvelously simultaneously full and empty space<<<
Well said, and for me that excellent passage was the best music of the night, and was also better than any single thing I heard at either of the very good Phil shows the week before (or at ANY P&F show I've seen in a long time). It was great stuff; ALMOST perfect for a moment!
I only watched the webcast I was not there...but I thought Bobby looked curmudgeonly as if he was put out by the whole thing. At least Mickey looked like he was having fun. Phil was a joy. But, I think after Jerry, Phil is the true deadhead's player. He has the right perspective, he wants to have fun want everyone else to have fun. He is merry and wise and groovy and humble and even fatherly when you look at his pride with Jackie.
And, I caucused yesterday and my precinct had 8 delegates 6 for Obama 2 for Clinton.
What went down with the Ron Paul Banner?
I was the one who attempted to bring out the Ron Paul Banner, and here is what happened. The truth, not some distortion by the fascistic opposition.
I have been attending Dead shows since 1987, and attended over 150 and another few dozen Jerry solo shows, so i'm no newbie to the scene.
I worked for Greenpeace for 2 years when I got out of High School and spent a few years working for Hemp Legalization in California. I ran a political booth on the boardwalk in Venice for almost 8 years daily. My whole life has been about raising awareness and political consciousness and I consider myself a hardcore activist with a website whi gets tens of thousands of hits per day, relating subjects of interest to people who want to know what being kept from them. I expose Secrets and Secret Societies and all kinds of political subversion. I think it's important for people to realize that the person who did this, was not some "wookie" whatever that implies, and sounds derogative by nature, but actually the Wookie was a very intelligent species of life. He was the technician on the Millenium Falcoln, and was Han Solo's right hand "Man". I don't know how many deadheads could repair the Millenium falcom or get it to go from broken to Hyperspace with the flick of switch, but I'm not here to judge anyone.
What happened that night with the Banner?
Me and my friend who volunteered to help me during the show, attempted to get the banner undone and shown to the crowd, and to the cameras, since we knew it was being filmed. We walked the banner through the people (after I had been dancing down on the floor the whole time), and we needed to bring it across the center.
As we started to unfold the banner the people behind us, a couple, (goingbonkers) and her boyfriend, both asked us what we were doing. Figuring it would be better to just act instead of explain ourselves, we started to hoist the banner up in the air. Goingbonkers said to her boyfriend it's a Ron Paul banner, and told us it was innappropriate and tried to take it down. I hadto grab the baner from her, and I explained to her politely, that it was political free speech and we were only going to be there for a brief moment.
(My idea was originally about 5 to 10 seconds, since we had no intention of being rude or getting in people's way, although we realized it would be an inconvenience. That's why I was polite, and tried to explain this to her.
Upon raising it a second time goingbonkers had clearly lost her mind, and tried to grab it down again. This time I explained after grabbing the banner back from her boyfriend and her, who tried desperately to hold onto it, but must have seen it in my eyes, that I was about to deck him right there. I calmy explained to them they were acting like fascists in front of the whole world and the whole thing was being filmed on camera, and they were representing fascism, and I was trying to uphold free speech.
The third time, bonkers jumped up again and tried to pull it down, and this time my help bailed out as the security was coming toward us.
So, I would like to say here and now.....how it saddens me to see political freedom of speech stifled and derailed by "deadheads" who aren't deadheads at all.
I'm personally friends with some people within the Grateful Dead. The night before the concert I had a conversion with Mountain Girl. We spoke about Obama and the campaign, and I asked her why the band was supporting Obama. Her reply was that she didn;t know why, but she stated she supported someone else, who had already dropped out of the race. Then she stated, "or Ron Paul"...to which I added that I was going to be wearing a Ron Paul shirt and I had a plan to smuggle in a banner and undo it almost at the end of the show, in support of Ron Paul.
What did Mountain Girl say in response to me?
That's a good idea.
That's what she said, and her words were inspiration for me to fulfil my idea and dream.
This is who I am.
Who are the fascists who tore down my banner? I hope your not afraid to hide yourselves from the world from now on. We all make mistakes. Turn off the Television, stop drinking the Fluoridated Tap Water, stop pigging out on supermarket food, and tell yourselves you will no longer allow the mass media to mind control you both, and that you can and will make a pledge to think for yourselves from now on, and not buy into the herd propaganda and mob mentality. I believe you both can do it. I wish you the best of luck.
At least I will always be able to show my face and know that I fight for freedom.
What does Obama stand for?
War in Pakistan, right around the corner. He is already preaching it.
Who is he surrounding himself with?
Members of the Trilateral Commision, Skull and Bones and the Wall Street Banking Establishment. The same people who financed and started all the other wars. Look into it. Type Webster Tarpley into Google and read about Obama's backers and advisors and support team. 6 Months ago, Lynne Cheney, Dick Cheney's wife admitted Obama was their cousin. He is related by blood to Wall Street, and the War Cartel.
The whole thing was a mistake, and the Dead should have never lent their support to Obama, and there are many others who agree with me. All I was trying to do was to make sure their message was heard as well.
Google Ron Paul, and listen to his speeches. He against the war and for bringing all troops home NOW!. He is for relaxing the drug laws and freeing prisoners incarcerated for victimless crimes. He is for abolishing the IRS and Federal Reserve. He is for LIMITED government and no intervention in foreign countries, promoting statesmanship instead. He has never voted to raise taxes. Never voted to raise congressional pay. Never voted to increase the power of the executive, and is for getting rid of the Patriot Act and is against the Real I.D. program. Ron represents Freedom, not Fascism.
Ron Paul is not perfect, but he is REAL.
Wake Up fellow deadheads.....don't follow the lemmings.
>>>"deadheads" who aren't deadheads at all<<<
According to YOU, that is. But of course you don't get to define what a "deadhead" is, because there is no one definition of a deadhead; Ann Coulter is a deadhead for Gods sake. Your image of a Deadhead is just that..... YOUR image, not the "truth".
>>>people within the Grateful Dead<<<
Where exactly is that? There IS no Grateful Dead, and there never really was; what you're talking about is all just an idea in each of our minds, very different depending on who you talk to. Jerry himself said, "In my world there is no Grateful Dead, it's just a band I play in". So who cares what someone connected to a defunct rock band would think about anything?
You're one of those who think you know what's REALLY going on and you're damn proud of it, and those are the people I trust the least.
You think you are "in the know" while the rest of us are just poor mindless lemmings (I'd say that you and George Bush are very similar in that way) but of course NO ONE you could ever talk to would agree that they are a lemming, including you and your friends; but how do you know that you're not a type of "lemming" as well, intoxicated by the self absorbed idea that YOU know what's really happening? One way or another we're ALL lemmings, bub; THAT'S the "truth"!
Whatever, I personally couldn't care less if you brought a Ron Paul or an Adolf Hitler banner to the show as long as you weren't purposely putting your interests ABOVE anyone elses, which IMO would include pushing through the front of a packed crowd in the middle of a concert just so YOU could be on TV.
I didn't see any of it so I don't know what really happened, but it's hard to imagine that there was room for you to just walk through the crowd in front of the stage without pushing into other peoples space, which will ALWAYS rightfully piss people off, lemmings or not.
I do not think a non-Obama voice was wrong at the show; IMO free speach is OFTEN inappropriate, but I do think that people who believe they really know the "truth" and use that opinion to hold themselves above others is wrong.
So good for you speaking your mind, but too bad for you that you seem think it puts you above the lemmings who "don't understand".
Either way, you should put your post in Other Stuff where it will get a much more comprehensive response, possibly including Goingbonkers herself!
Lance Newberry suggested to me to post this here. Isn't he a nice (sellout) fellow?

BTW, there was no pushing or shoving anyone. It sounds to me like Lance is likely goingbonkers boyfriend. Otherwise, why even bother to write what he wrote?
You know, I have been to so many shows I can't count. And I can't remember one time, I decided to take it upon myself to stop someone's else's free speech regardless of what they believed in. Deadheads that do that, aren't deadheads, they are unwitting dupes and fascists. Fascism uses the youth of the country to enage the opponent by claiming to be for "change". But what kind of change? The fascists don't bother to find out, they just believe in enforcing the common ideas.
Hey folks, friends and fellow heads....in case you have not read it recently, here is the definition of fascism.
Fascism is an authoritarian political ideology (generally tied to a mass movement) that considers the individual subordinate to the interests of the state, party or society as a whole. Fascists seek to forge a type of national unity, usually based on (but not limited to) ethnic, cultural, racial, religious attributes.
Now ask yourself why you support Obama. Is it because he's Black, because he's young, because he sounds appealing by calling for "change"? Or is it because you actually know all about him, have known about him for years, and support everything he has to say? Do you even know what he has to say?
Here is the speech where he reveals his plans to attack Pakistan. Obama is a warmonger.

Lance is caught with his pants down......
Here is a quote from Lance in another post using the term "Wookies". It appears Lance is more connected to this situation than he admits. It appears to me that Lance is IN FACT goinbonkers boyfriend, and tried to pretend that he wasn't.
Try messing with a researcher and political hardball player like me, and this is what happens. Poor Lance!
This is what happens when you try to play the players. You get played like this!!!
Polyphonic Spree - Great American Music Hall
../287255/402566. html?1185213350
The thing that surprised me the most was that there were no hippies or wookies or even stoners in the frenzied, blissful crowd. No one was smoking, and this is some of the most stoner-friendly music I've seen in a while. They weren't drinking much either; no lines at the bar! They were just REALLY into the band. I can't believe that hippies aren't more into this group, because it was a TRULY psychedelic show.
You call this "research?" Seriously!
Have a look at who you're attacking before you start. There's not a soul on this board who's going to choose your side over Lance's. Lance is one of the good ones who's been around for a long, long time.
If you have been to as many shows as you say you have, then you must not be looking around at the others beside you. 'Cause if you did, you'd see Lance.
Perhaps Josh has been to one too many shows.
>>>Lance is caught with his pants down......
Did he also exit on a gurney?
>>>You call this "research?" Seriously!<<<
what else would you expect from a paultard?!
So, Nancy calls the Ron Paul guy, who turns out to be Josh, a wookie. Lance posts a message disagreeing with Josh's take on the Banner Incident, which will surely be remembered as one of the great injustices of our time. In an act of breathtakingly complex research, Josh finds that Lance used the word "wookie" in a posting about a polyphonic spree show. Therefore, Lance is goingbonkers' boyfriend.
Huh?

HERE NANCY IN THE SKY PROFESSES HER LOVE FOR OBAMA.

YES WE CAN!
I am so glad the boys have decided to become involved in the future of our country and endorse a candidate like OBAMA. It's about time. OR maybe the
TIME IS RIGHT.
THANK YOU.
NEXT, DEVILGIRL, AKA NANCYINTHESKY (READ MULTIPLE PERSONALITIES HERE) THEN GOES ON TO SAY THIS, AS IF SHE HAD NO INVOLVEMENT. AND NOTICE HOW SHE SAYS SHE DIDN'T CARE WHAT BANNER I HAD. LIES!!! SHE HAS CLEARLY SHOWN A BIAS TOWARD OBAMA ALREADY, UNDER HER OTHER HANDLE. hERE, SHE FIRST USES THE TERM "WOOKIE".

NEXT, GOINGBONKERS, AKA NANCYINTHESKY, ATTACKS ME CALLS ME A WOOKIE, WHATEVER THAT IS. CLAIMING I WAS "NOT COOL" AND SHOUTED ABOUT FREE SPEECH. I ALREADY STATED THAT WHAT HAPPENED WAS EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE. I WAS POLITE AND GOINGBONKERS WAS THE RUDE ONE. HERE SHE ADMITS SHE IS THE ONE WHO PULLED THE BANNER DOWN.

THEN LANCE COMES ON SAYING SOMETHING ABOUT "WOOKIES", A TERM WHICH I AM COMPLETELY UNFAMILAR WITH AND HAVE NEVER HEARD ANYONE USE IN MY LIFE TOWARD ANYONE ELSE, SO I FIND IT ODD.

THEN LATER ON AFTER MY POST LANCE NEWBERRY POSTS THIS, AND CLAIMS TO NOT HAVE BEEN THERE WHEN IT HAPPENED, YET THE ONLY TWO PEOPLE I HAVE EVER HEARD USING THE TERM "WOOKIE" CLAIM TO NOT KNOW EACH OTHER, AND COMPLETELY SUPPORT EACH OTHER. VERY STRANGE???

THE PROBLEM IS THE REAL INFILTRATORS OF THE HEADS (THE FASICIST PIGS AND FEDS) ARE HIDING THEMSELVES DISGUISED AS FANS.
Morons for Ron Paul!
The only issue I have with you Josh is that you seem so proud of yourself. Humility is a beautiful thing, especially for the teachers of the world, which you seem to feel you are - spreading the "truth" and all.
I think if you're dedicating your life to making the world a better place that's very admirable, but at least to me you come across in your posts as if you feel you're BETTER than others because of what you "know", so what would you say your true motives are for what you do? Is it really to help people and improve the world, or is it to satisfy a deep-rooted "I'm BETTER than you" insecurity Jones? (Either choice is possible, only you can answer it)
>>>Try messing with a researcher and political hardball player like me, and this is what happens. Poor Lance<<<
Sounds a bit arrogant and self-centered to me, not really attributes I look for in teachers (but unfortunately are often found) - why is it so important to you that we know what a "hardball player" you are?
(And while I'm happy to know that people are reading my old reviews, I don't see how my use of the term "wookie" has anything to do with any of this.)
I was in the balcony that night, but believe me Josh, I wouldn't have had a problem with your banner, it WAS a political event after all. There was also an Obama poster on the edge of the balcony near me where someone had written Obama Bin Ladin and I had no problem with leaving that up as well, but if someone had put it directly in front of my face I would have moved it.
I believe in free speech, but I don't like bullies or oppression. If you feel you were bullied or oppressed that night you have a right to be upset and defend yourself, but not to feel you're better than anyone who may have felt YOU were the bully/oppressor.
As I said, if there was room that night for you to move through the crowd without shoving and you were really being polite than IMO you should have been left alone to make your point and move on, but there are two different versions to this story. You say no pushing/shoving happened, but you have to admit that's hard to imagine where the scene went down.
I have no problem with what you were trying to do Josh, my issue is why you need to imply that you are smarter and better than others just because we don't dig exactly what you dig. I would have been much more impressed with your defense of your actions and what happened that night if you hadn't of added all the "you lemmings/unwitting dupes and fascists" stuff.
BTW, you're welcome. Inspiration is also a beautiful thing, but you do know that it never comes to those who already believe they know it all.
If that wasn't you Lance, then my apologies for coming at you like that. No problem. I do have a problem with the fascists who grabbed my banner.
If you feel like I was coming off all high and mighty, you likely misread my intentions for stating what I did. I just wanted to set the record straight, that I was not a political amateur or neophyte in my views or history at shows, that's all.
<<edited by admin>>
That's my attitude. If people want to work on themselves, that is what they need to do. I have worked on myself, And we all need to try just a little bit harder, and just a little bit more. But there are some stereotypes I just dont buy into, and i'm not sitting back and taking it, for the betterment of peace. If peace is possible, then we should work toward it. When you are being attacked, personally, it's different. I decided right there to make peace and not attack the guy, but it was a close call. It's a good thing I have self control and compassion, or I would have let loose. I just don't believe in it. I would rather work towards peace, but if someone crosses me, and declares themselves my enemy, I don't mind leaving a bloody mess behind.
My whole point was never to interfere with anyone's show. If anyone knows how to get along and dance and groove with everyone, it's me. I hardly ever have any problems, but sometimes, there are people who don't fit in. I just happened to try to unfold my banner in front of the (two) of them. Pushing and shoving is not my style. It may have seemed like it to anyone who is "holding space" by standing in one place and can't move for anyone, and that's probably what happened, initially. The wookie name calling so called deadhead fascists in disguise, just happened to be in the center and are likely the kind of people who can't move for anyone, for a moment because they are too afraid of losing their
"precious space"
Have you ever encountered those people before? What are they called? "Wookies"?
The next time you see me at a show, i'll be asking everyone to move for a moment, to see if there is anything under their precious floor blankets used for keeping their precious space. That is me. I like to cause a ruckus, but I try to make it fun.
Josh, you are clearly mistaken if you think unfurling a huge banner in the middle of a crowded floor wouldn't interfere with anyone's show.
Hey 1st One,
That's why I wasn't going to keep it up for more than a couple seconds.
A Minor inconvenience, Yes, I admit.
An interference into anyone's show, was not my intention, but that's a small casualty of the Dead taking on politics. I have been to many shows where someone or something, interfered with the show in some way.
Personally, I think it's more of an interference with my show, and mind state, when someone jumps off a balcony and has to be taken out in a stretcher. Yet, I don't blame the guy or girl. Shit happens. I am only stating it was not my intention to interfere with anyone's show. It was on my mind, to try to avoid that as much as possible, while still getting the message across.
No excuses, just the facts. I personally apologize to all those who's show it interfered with, if it did interfere with anyone's show, in their opinion. i think there is a difference between an "Interference" and an "Inconvenience". But some may not agree, and that is allright, I apologize to all of those.
Of course I understand the need to balance the freedom of expression with the freedom to enjoy the show. But, please remember, I paid for my ticket because I love the band member sand their music, and I DID NOT want to support Obama, and I resent the band using their music to take my money and give it to someone I don't support. So I believed it was my right. My Vote, and the ones who support Ron Paul.
Actually the biggest point people should realize about all this is this :
In a Brave New World, (Huxley), the Power Structure No longer controls the people. The People Police themselves. People who do not fall in line, get singled out by the ones too afraid to get out of line, and turned in, to the fascist state. People put their own surveillance cameras up, and everyone watches everyone. Everyone's paranoid and nobody thinks for themselves. Survival tells you, if you want to get along, you better go along with things. This is the sad state of affairs we are in today. In a room full of supposed "freedom loving beings", people will tear down a banner and suppress speech in order to "control" what happens in their atmosphere.
In my world, people do whatever they want around me, as long as it doesn't hurt or injure me or my loved ones personally, in the immediate present, or in the long run. If someone wants to fly a kite in a concert next to me, i'll either move or make do with it, or ask them to try to keep the line out of my face. But I would not tear down their kite. That's my point.
I would say the problem was that you tried to hold up your banner in front of other people. If you had hung it on the wall or from the front of the balcony and it had been taken down it would have been clear what was happening and I would be right there with you on the free speech issue (NEVER violence for me though).
But before you call people fascists, are you SURE they pulled your banner down because it was a Ron Paul banner, or just because they didn't want it in their face?
Either way, apology accepted. Good luck with your quest and keep an open mind.
>>I personally apologize to all those who's show it interfered with, if it did interfere with anyone's show,
accepted. and I'm waiting for you to apologize for your remarks about KILLING. a bit over the top, even for a Ron Paul activist. not so sure free speech covers death threats ~
I won't respond to immature stuff and all the other trappings of message boards, but I will make clear to you Bouncy, that I was talking about a completely removed and hypothetical situation, not the one that happened. So, no there will be no aplogies for that.
Josh,
You interfered with my show experience. Like most of the crowd, I was there for the music and the chance to see Bobby, Phil, and Mickey perform together. I was right in the midst of your disruption and did not know it was a Ron Paul banner until I read this board the day after. I was disturbed by your actions and the chaos you created.
I think you made a poor decision on where to unfurl your banner. I agree that you should of hung your banner on the wall or from the front of the balcony. If you wanted to be up front you could have danced around with a RP sign the size of the Deadheads for Obama posters and had no problems.
Perhaps your passion for RP blinded you to the possible outcomes of unfurling a large banner in the pit of a rock concert.
Josh:
you are a F'N TOOL
Josh,
>>I have worked on myself.
Bullshit. Not sufficiently to avoid making wild accusations based on the flimsiest of evidence--ie. use of the word wookie (which btw one would think your super-duper research skills would have led you to search on on this site, where you would discover literally dozens of uses of that term outside of this thread).
Apologizing after the fact does not cut it. If you were truly politically skilled, and motivated by anything other than your own self-aggrandizement, you would attempt a civil dialog, and you certainly would not throw accusations around without even asking the person in question if they were true.
All of which, I realize now, is just a much longer way of saying what the previous post said:
you are an F'N TOOL.
>Pushing and shoving is not my style. It may have seemed like it to anyone who is "holding space" by standing in one place and can't move for anyone, and that's probably what happened, initially.
that is classic. "get out of my way so i can hold a giant banner in front of your face. your not moving means you're the jerk." talk about a fascist.
tool.
I would have done almost anything in the world, to get the message across that Ron Paul is an option. I have no regrets, even for the people who's show I interfered with. I have NO regrets.
And if all the Obama deadheads in the world want to cry about it, that's fine, let them cry.
Cry, cry, cry, and get it all out now, before Obama makes a fool out of you all, and shows you he's no different than Bush, and then they'll pick you up and take you to the local concentration camp, and you can cry some more.
Then they'll inject you with their tracking chip, and track you everywhere you go, and you can cry some more.
Then they'll take more money and use it to fund all the wars, against your choice, and you can cry some more.
They'll come with no knocks in the middle of the night, and take away your children, screaming and crying, and you can cry some more.
And they'll take your Crippled Folks and throw them out of the wheelchairs and arrest them when they can't even raise their arms, and they'll take them and break them, and you can cry some more.
And they'll devalue your currency, and take your jobs and ship them overseas and you won't be able to find work, and you can cry some more.
But if you want to cry about a Ron Paul Banner, save your tears....you'll have plenty of reasons to cry if Obama get's elected.
Sounds like you're already on the trail of tears..........
I'm laughing at all the whining babies. If tears are streaming down my eyes, those are Tears of laughter, Keith. If you knew what I knew, you would be laughing too.
The only thing sad here, is how immature people are, and how out of touch with politics most people are. The country will get what it deserves. A mindless country gets a mindless leader and takes mindless actions. That's sad. But after 20 years of political involvement, I cried all my tears out long ago.
Josh, you ignorant slut........
Josh
when you almost knocked me over- catching my head with the banner, and running another 5 feet snapping my neck - as you were running away from Flouncy - I could see the crazed look in your eyes, and it was very unsettling, you almost knocked me over, had no regard for my health and well being, and your eyes were blazing - you appeared to be on some strange stuff, - bad drugs, adrenalin, maybe a dose of self obsessed narcissism (clear after reading this thread)

Flashing back to Brookdale DNF...I was treated the same way in order to make room for some wheel chair folks that bouncy insisted on getting to the front. Not that anyone cared about the hit in the mouth I took. Nancy was doing good, fuck the rest of the crowd.
That's terrible Kelly. Who hit you?
The disabled folks who were trying to make their way to a viewing area were most grateful for any assistance they received. I'm sure they appreciated your help.
Greedy , YOURE FULL OF SHIT.
I never knocked you down, but I would be happy to if you asked me politely.
I never caught your head with the banner, and I never snapped your neck, although it sounds tempting.
I was not drug crazed, and I was not calmed down by any security. The guy took my sign and walked away.
Greedy, you're pathetic.
^^
Josh, you're Josh
enjoy your private special reality
there is no point introducing real reality, and any simple small truth to you - I am so glad you can speak for my neck on my behalf
private Idaho - that just about sums it up
>> The disabled folks who were trying to make their way to a viewing area were most grateful for any assistance they received. I'm sure they appreciated your help. <<
So they are happy I got a bloody lip? Maybe next time you should approach management before the show and ask about handicap seating instead of disrupting the show for the rest of the folks.
>>there is no point introducing real reality, and any simple small truth to you -
What LLTD said.
((((peace and peace of mind for all))))
Hey Greedy. Can you describe the banner, and how it could have possibly wrapped around your neck?
I didn't think so.
Because it never happened.
Talk about Private Idaho.
Pistols at dawn gentlemen?
With a TU vs Nancy mudwrestling opener.

GO RON PAUL!
THE ONLY CHOICE.
I HAVE SEEN THE GD 110 TIMES and I am A Proud RON PAUL Supporter and "THE DEAD" were LUCKY i WAS NOT THERE!
GOOD JOB! LIVE FREE!
Josh you are my IDOL! Good Work My Friend. The Deadhead world is the same as mainstream america. They are just as stupid!
I just checked out Ron Paul's website. Typical Libertarian, some good points, some bad. Two points that stuck out for me;
Social Security: He lays partial blame to the alleged solvency problem with Social Security on illegal aliens. There's a cheap shot.
Health Care: He's against universal health care and dismisses Canada's successful health care policy with the tired old story of Canadians rushing across the border for better care.
Like I said, I like some of his views, but look a bit further into what effect his policies would have on the underclass in our society. You want lower taxes, fine. How do roads get built? How do we take care of the poor? The free market system doesn't always work.
someone should add a politics section or somethin.....looks like a PhullPhiled summer comin up...Mas Phil por favor!
