THANK U Taper Rob!! You ROCK!!!
An actual review would be nice. Anybody actually do that anymore?
This will be short but it was really an enjoyable show from my perspective. Reuben & Cherise was a nice surprise. I called out Looks Like rain so I was happy to see it.
The jam into Truckin' had a Spoonful vibe, nice way to start. Dire Wolf was clean, nice vocals.
Was majorly stoked for King Solomon's Marbles, a first for me. Stayed fairly true to the recorded version.
Was never really blown away by any of the jams (they never really got out there last night which was more than fine by me) but they held it together and most of the show had a crisp, fresh feel. I was impressed with JK's vocals -- obviously they made a conscious decision to let him handle the lion's share of vocals and their sound I think is better for it. The New Potato Caboose thing was really slinky and nice.
This is it for me until February but the show left me wanting more. I think most will enjoy the band if you haven't seen them already.
As post-GD Phil/Bob bands go, I would rank this below Crusader Rabbit, TOO 98 and TD 08, but it was pretty fine.
The bottom is a bit thin. I know it's a different drumming pair, but this band doesn't have that really full sound as a foundation. Phil and Bob are clearly having fun. Highlights for me were the jam out of Reuben (very nice), Looks Like Rain, Cosmic Charlie and Scarlet > Fire. After all the Mickey Fire raps and super-speedy Q versions I've sat through, it was nice to hear a Scarlet > Fire the way it should sound!
If you see this band, you'll have a fun night.
a few random thoughts.....
I had fun last night. there's no doubt about it.
the music was better than I expected, but there are still many areas that can easily be nit-picked.
mainly (and this is certainly personal preference), but what's up with phil. I guess it can be attributed to his new bass, but the lack of bombs, and overall low end, and the ability to FEEL his bass, is sorely, sorely missing, imho...
also in terms of the overall bass and low-end in the overall mix of the show, i spent a lot of time focusing on the drummers last night.
jay lane, whatever i mean, whatever
in terms of russo, he was fine, competent enough, more than enough even, but his drumming came off very "treble-ie" to me..
and I think to my musical ears and memory, the lack of molo , and specifically is heavier drumming (he plays a double bass drum, right?), so you factor in the void of Molo, COMPOUNDED by Phil's higher end playing/new bass, and then throw in the new drummers not playing with the arrogance (for lack of a better term) that i like to hear... it just overall leads to a really thin, light sound, which in my personal music preference, do not prefer (how's that for a run-on sentence.. )
a good thing though, and I am a bit surprised with people getting on FJ for his vocals (I mean thats one of the reasons they chose him, right?), but having FJ sing songs like he's accustomed to (like Jerry), makes Bobby decrease his Shatnerization of songs..
yes it was evident during Ramble on Rose, but imo, less so then it would have been if Bobby sang it alone.
I just think that b/c FJ sings in the timing and pacing that we know and love, and he splits singing with Bobby, if just forces Bobby to also attempt at least to sing more with the music than he has done in recent years...
another positive Bobby thing is that I actually enjoyed his playing on Pinkie during Doin That Rag and Ramble on Rose..
on the same point though, he unfortunately (well at least from where i was), he was the most clear in the mix at times, so it was cool to actually listen to Bobby play.. and I thought Pinkie didn't sound too shabby last night
(shit loads better than that big blue clunky thing he plays, imho)
in terms of the show specifically.... ummmm what did they do again last night???
like I said I had fun.. nothing outrageous, Cosmic Charlie, Dire Wolf, and I got my Cold Rain and Snow (albeit being the closer as opposed to the opener :-))
I was VERY lucky to find a way upstairs last night, and I hope to god I can do that again tonight b/c man, that floor looks like a cluster fuck and a half... but it should be fun, this I know!
also, check out the setlist from one of my all time favorites shows.... swap out the Jerry tunes and its nearly a match!! lol ( i know not really, but its interesting to see the similar songs, somewhat....)
hoping for a Terrapin tonight (as long as Bobby doesn't sing the "inspiration" part!) lol... oh man...

Other One was hot... they broke it down to a whisper and then brought it back...
Ruben was tight, nice jam at the end...
New Potato sounded like vintage Dead...
King Solomon was super tight, started with drumz for 5 minutes...
Charlie was fast and high energy...
the band was very relaxed and super chill...
Nice to hear them play again...
I thought Phil was playing a lot of moving guitar lines which were not in a low register. I did hear a few small bombs. I though Phil looked and sounded good.
Bob was sounding great on vocals and guitar. He clearly was prepared. Though he did mess up lyrics at end of show. at least he had the sense of humor to stop singing and gesture to the audience to give him some slack, lol.
Liked the drummers. Plenty of heavy driving beat when needed.
The DSO guy was a pleasant surprise for me. Didn't bother me that he sounds a bit like Jerry.
Chimenti was great, as always.
I heard Borracco was supposed to be there, but he had a family commitment out west.
Wish I could do another show. Maybe this winter.
Floor to side of soundboard was bearable.
show was decent at best.
please someone upload a sbd of the show for me. i lost my job and had to give up my tickets. actually had to take a train into nyc, sell the tix (for face) and take train home. and they played R+C, Dire Wolf, and King Solomon's-- I am in tears. Please send me links to downloads.

Thank you
"(he plays a double bass drum, right?)"
Wrong. Never seen John play a double bass in 22 years of watching him. He just knows how to sound BIG (like Ron Tutt) without extra drums.
another random cool, non-musical moment was after Ramble on Rose, where Phil went behind his stack, changed out of his long sleeved shirt into a t-shirt, turned around, and his lights were on and he started doing his little Phil two-step dance he does right before they kick into a song, and BAM, right into the unexpected R&C..
brought a smile to my face.
thanks Tom, I honestly didn't know (that's why I asked )
>>mainly (and this is certainly personal preference), but what's up with phil. I guess it can be attributed to his new bass, but the lack of bombs, and overall low end, and the ability to FEEL his bass, is sorely, sorely missing, imho...
Yep Ive noticed that too
>>jay lane, whatever i mean, whatever
He cracks me up if I watch him sometimes. He is always bouncing and jumping around like a goofy kid.
jay lane, whatever i mean, whatever
heres your 2nd set list from the soundboard
Tom beat me to it. Molo is a professional touring drummer. He could hang with any band. No knock on Russo or Lane but they just dont have CLOSE to the chops that Molo has. Molo plays the drums like they are an equal instrument in the mix -- not just backround 4 on the floor monoteny.
I was not there and didnt hear the whole show so my opinion really means shit but my take is that they need to work some shit out --- do some more planning...if it need be plan were the jams are gonna go in advance. Im not a big fan of Phils need to try and take the music in a whole other direction when things are working just fine. Im all for making the jams purposeful but im not for Phil just busting out something until he forces everyone to follow him -- and really does not turn into anything interesting.

"Molo plays the drums like they are an equal instrument in the mix -- not just backround 4 on the floor monoteny."
That's exactly right and describes his playing perfectly. He really is one of the few drummers I've ever seen (outside of a jazz context) that makes his instrument as important to the dynamics of each and every song as anyone else on stage.

hey - long distance runner here - check out the Furthur article on my music blog. I am following it up with a second article - and a possible Weir interview - for the East Coast shows this week - hope to have it posted/published shortly.
in any event, ill have show reviews before the end of the week, whole lot of material here.
Great show last night!
listened to the show on gdradio and it was very average. nothing to great. Bobby stop singing the Jerry songs please!!!!! you don't need to sing ramble on, hes gone and especially days between, thats why John is there. come on Bob give it a break i know your a control freak but its time you give it a rest!!!!! besides i love when you sing your own songs.
Can't wait to see the boys in Wallingford!! Put on the good vibe, gig-down and be grateful for the music!! Remember, the band feeds off the crowd so let's hear some positive vibrations!!
^^^^^^
right on brother. Thats what its all about. The music plays the band.
I like to think that this music is eternal, and to some extent it is, but the simple fact is that these gentlemen who have changed all of our lives, will not be around forever.
Enjoy it while its here, and keep those good vibes rockin out.
Ill be right there with you at wallingford....Ill be the dude smiling ear to ear
peace
Wonderful time indeed !
It is OUR SACRED MUSIC and COMMUNITY!
Party On!!
Listen to John K. choke on the days between. Opportunity left wide open fizzles to crap.
Just like I thought, one guitar tone from the seventies, cant play modern jerry licks...
I like Butch Sochorow much better for GD cover band stuff.
Never heard John K. siii-iiinnn-gggg so much with DSO.
He needs to stop stretching out one syllable words.
>>>lack of bombs, and overall low end, and the ability to FEEL his bass, is sorely, sorely missing, imho...<<<
Depends on the room and where you are in it. Phil rattled every cell in my body with the opening note of Viola on 12/31.
