Wow what a setlist. I have not listened to anything since Oakland but they sounded hot then and this looks so damn tasty.
Just got back from the show. Really uneven. At points it was shit hot and other times it was a bit of a trainwreck. Bobby completely fucked up Memphis Blues and it kind of killed what was a white hot first set. JK's guitar was cranked finally, and he completely shredded Deal, as I have heard him do in DSO. Bobby seemed thoroughly spooked after his massive brain freeze on Memphis Blues, but the second set redeemed him. Jack Straw built to an absurd peak before Bobby slightly killed it (if you can do that slightly) by bringing it down again. Phil saved it by dropping some bombs (well, what pass for bombs now) and JK was pretty heroic in rescuing the vibe. Wheel was a little disjointed but had its moments. Welcome to... was unexpected but not completely awful. Lost the crowd slightly, but UJB brought them back. Great jamming in this one, and that continued in a gorgeous Unbroken Chain that rally was the highlight of the night. Satisfaction was great, even if Bobby didn't know when to end it. JK really shredded this one as well. Let It Grow jammed out very very nicely and SM and JBG both rocked hard. Phil was definitely a star, rescuing the first set with great vocals on Bird Song after Bobby shatnered the first verse. All in all, a very different and somewhat better experience than the first night. The venue still blows, though they did remove the bars form the back area so the crowding wasnt nearly as bad as the first night. Sound was pretty miserable- Phil even asked us if we could even hear him during his donor rap. Definitely excited to see these guys in CT with good sound and seats! Pepe's in New Haven is also a huge plus...
i just turned on the stream, and it sounds like a highschool band playing unbroken chain (horrible lead guitar .. just SLOPPY) . . i'm seriously considering backing out of my plans to travel to chicago now =\
-usually a fluffer
^^TAPER ROB!!!^^
Thanks you got my head in multiple pics tonight!!!!
thank you tapers and folks who put the shows on LMA. I think this band sounds weak, but it is cool to be able to hear it on the other side of the country the same night.
Pretty lackluster performance last night and I'm trying to be kind. Things started off with a nice Stranger but after the Memphis Blues debacle it really went downhill at an amazing speed. Is this really the same band I saw at the Fox? Doesn't seem possible.
I'm going to absolutely, totally, completely disagree with the previous reviewers so far.
Here's how I know it was a kickass show: i was standing toward the back on the floor and for most of the show there was almost zero back and forth of people running out to take piss breaks and grab beers. Everyone was focused on the music.
I felt they were pushing some of the jams into more challenging places, once or twice they didn't work, but they were playing without a net. Yeah Bobby blew the lyrics, you're surprised? He's been doing that for years.
Sounds was excellent - clear and loud. Plenty of room to dance. ZERO security hassles. Great vibe all around.
yeah, i fully agree with T - last night was a very hot show IMO, and i saw 12/8 as well. yes, stuck inside o' mobile was a trainwreck, but half-step erased that memory quickly and overall set 1 was stronger than previous night's. meanwhile, JK was stepping out in guitar in a much bigger way than 12/8, and just shredding, seriously shredding. deal was ridiculously over the top, as was jack straw. what a version. the whole second set was pretty damn strong, and avoided the 'black hole' that kind of marred night before's mid-second set. transition into UJB was subtle and beautiful, outro jam was powerful. let it grow might have been the best version i've ever heard, seriously. i think the song selection in last half of set 2 was obviously too much bobby rocker - think it's hard to justify satisfaction and johnnybgoode in one show, not to mention good lovin as well. but all were played at an absurdly high level, and most of the longer jams had purpose and were pretty damn interesting. four 'peaks' to close satisfaction was a little histrionic but who the hell cares? sound was great up close on the left side, phil was much louder than night beforend playing SO WELL. this band has a lot of upside.
i totally agree with jt....obviously the fire marshal told them to make more room...they put all the vending downstairs...easy to get around up and down in and out beer bathroom coat check everybody was friendly all the pushing shoving assholes were there tuesday not last night...as for the show i was about 10th row for the 2nd set and i thought it absolutely rocked....its not jerry but it sure is close and in my opinion its about as good as its going to get...i dont know what people are expecting...all these bad reviews i dont get...ive been to 350 with jerry 100 after 1995 and this by far is the best ive heard since ..i am soooooooooooooo glad its not another freakin allman brother alumni..in my opionion they finally gave in and got the best cover band jerry for the job .it wouldnt be a dead show if weir forgets some words so what...jon is obviously a little nervous sometimes but what do people expect hes playing with his idols..its going to take some time...even michael jordan lost basketball games there are going to be good nights and bad...obviousy stuck inside of mobile was a train wreckk so what go to the bathroom grab a beer and watch half step which was great even though they fucked up going into rio grande so what...the sound is there...ive played guitar for 30 years...i thought the volume was good you could weir and jon perfectly it was definately louder than tuesday and better...and jon did tear up deal and jack straw..it reminded me alot of 79-80's shows....if your going to kill unbroken chain into satisfaction into let it grow sugar mags then your obviously at the wrong place find something better to do with your time and money...i liked it alot and i have the discs to critique in an hour...im not saying spend all your money get divorced and go on tour but definately if you can get a ticket reasonably and you have the time go and have fun cause thats what its all about and keep your day job..i seriously believe that they definately are trying to play as best as they can...a band is exactly like a basketball team...5 guys trying to get on the same page...some nights its not going to be there and your going to get killed and some nights you play good enough to win and sometimes you blow them away its reality people and again with jt's review...IT HAS ALOT OF UPSIDE... i personally cant wait to go on vacation and go to asheville and charlotte and norfolk and the more people that dont go the better more tickets for people with an open mind to kick back and listen to some good music...if you take a 100 multiple choice test and you get 10 wrong you still get an A....the compass always points to terrapin...if i have 1 gripe its what i didnt hear not what i heard...obviously terrapin wharf rat and morning dew are coming ...enjoy and peace gratefulbill
thanks to the last 3 posts for keeping it real....I swear if i hear one more bad review about this band ..Phil is almnost 70 and he's still the man...
>>>..Phil is almnost 70 and he's still the man...
Exactly.
Can't wait to see him at Hampton. By then they should be cooking with gas.
Thanks again TRob, all the reviews are great. It is nice to see some tye dye on stage again too!!!! I can't wait for NYE...3 sets baby
>>> obviously the fire marshal told them to make more room
funny you say this, at one point last night i looked up and saw some firemen - carrying clipboards - prowling around the balconies.
Jack Straw was out of this world. UJB reminded me of a mid-70s type version that at the time would gave been coupled with a super-jammed out playin
Pretty decent show...But Welcome To The Dance?.. Can we PLEASE bury that tune!
>>>thanks to the last 3 posts for keeping it real....I swear if i hear one more bad review about this band ..Phil is almnost 70 and he's still the man...
Love it. Only the good reviews are "keeping it real" now. C'mon man it's called "Reviews" for a reason- maybe we could have a special forum called "Preaching" and only blinded positive ravings about being "grateful" and "blessed" can go there.
Some of us are truly sick of leaving these shows with a pit in our stomach and look to these reviews to see if it's worth buying a ticket.
Keep the "real" reviews coming y'all. Thanks.
the fire marshall stuff wasnt a joke....on tuesday being in the construction business there was a 5 minute discussion amongst ourselve about how many people would get trampled to death if something had happened and obviously somebody brought it to the attention of the people that own the place
Yep, thanks for keeping it real folks!
Last night was an uneven show at best. Satisfaction was pure cheese, placed in the middle of the second set no less. The rest of the second set wasn't much better. Both Hammerstein shows had their moments but these shows IMO were not as good as the Oakland shows. I also thought the Dead spring tour was better played than these two shows. Hopefully the performances will improve over the next three shows.
Thankfully the sound was much better the second night and the sound should be great in Wallingford.
IMO this band has potential but the performances and jamming have a lot of room for improvement.
here is the 2nd set list from the soundboard
silly spoiled deadheads. first real tour and seems like people can not wait to toss dagers. if phil had not brought the magic back with his band then we would be reviewing another great version of "Black Bird". LOL!! this band will rock when they find the sea legs.
"keeping it real"?????
as said in the chat room, realtime, as the show was happening:
1st set, Stranger: "intro and transistion way off"
Deal: "well, the common folk liked that"
memphis blues: "a TRAINWREAK"
Bird Song: "Phil pissed Bobby took the first verse", "Phil took a 'walk' around his area of the stage showing his unhappiness"
Good Lovin': "band not together coming into the song"
set 2 opener, jackstraw, 6 minutes into the 2nd set: "this is 180 degree turn from the 1st set"
on jack straw: "JK stepping up here"
welcome to the dance: "great jamout with UJB teases thrown in"
UBC: "while not quite a PLF version, it sounds very good"
let it grow: "maybe the highlight of the show"
overall: "take set 1 from 1st night and set 2 from 2nd night and you have a great show"
i can take the vocal flubs from Bobby to a point. but when he cant recover from them then theres a problem. he couldnt get out of Memphis Blues fast enough last night, calling for the end of the song. from there to taking the 1st verse of Bird Song, knowing that Phil was going to sing, it put the 1st set in a bad place. Deal and Crazy Fingers, while played well, were in the middle of what i thought was not a well played and executed 1st set.
(they played 1/2step? i was still recovering from the memphis blues debacle)
by contrast, the 2nd set i thought was a whole different band. tight from the get go. listening to the jam in Dance, it felt like old school jamming from the GD. Satisfaction got the firemen dancing and singing up in the balcony. i felt the LIG placement was weird, but it turned out to be my highlight of the show. JK showed his chops thru out the song; thru out the 2nd set even.
such as it is, would some rate this a "good" or "bad" review?
Good/Bad???
It's a keeping it real review..
a very accurate and objective review from taperrob, IMO.
>>> silly spoiled deadheads. first real tour and seems like people can not wait to toss dagers.
$60 a ticket is not spoiled dude.
As a group "deadheads" already give these guys a ton of slack in regards to performance expectations. There aren't a whole lot of bands out there today (jambands included) that would book an entire tour with full priced ticketing without enough rehearsal time under their feet to play their basic ballads right.
We all get that improvisational music will include some flubs along the road to the good stuff, BUT most of the straight ahead songs that don't even have jams in them sound brutally under practiced so far.
In fact, I would argue they would be better off taking more of an old school P&F approach and scrap most of the "songs" in lieu of more free form jams. I'd much rather hear 30 mins of cool noodling and basslines than another weird reading of good lovin- which incidentally just about any bar band on earth can play without any rehearsal.
I thought the floor was a little to jammed. The fire dept (in full gear) where in the audience from Satisfaction on - think a few heads snuck in? Unbroken Chain was searing. Put my head back and just enjoyed the ride.
I also am enjoying the band playing around with Phils new one - it really has some UJB chords in there, so it wasn't a surprise to see them come together. Look foward to another go round my friends!!
Taper Rob comments were right on, although the highlight of the show was Jack Straw hands down.
Deal was second.
The relationship between Bobby and Phil is a little exposed without the buffer and probably comfort of the other two core members. Bob likes to control things, Phil likes to stretch things and see where they go.
Alot of uneven turns on some songs, missed verses and vocals on others...but, in the end, with some practice and time, this set up has the best shot to have the most powerful lead guitar since Jerry. Jk's vocals were middle of the road. In fact Jay lane took most of the harmonies with either Bobby or Phil.
I'll be back in February.
>>overall: "take set 1 from 1st night and set 2 from 2nd night and you have a great show"
I think that's about right, though I thought the three songs that opened the set last night were all quite good. There was a nice flow going until the Great Memphis Trainwreck of '09. They recovered well enough in the second set. Work in progress. It will improve. Still more fun than most other things you could do on a Tues and Weds night.
http://www.archive.org/details/furthur2009-12-09.m 210.psp3.flac16
was not blown away by anything except a few minutes of Rubin & Cherise, and Scarlet/Fire tuesday...wed. sounds pretty good, check out the jam that starts at about 3 mins into UBChain...fairly smoking...with Jeff and JK ripping it up
oh and can somebody please remind me again...why does Phil bother going out on tour with Weir?!?
I had a great time.
2nd night balco and set list beat 1st night floor for me by a lot
that said, R&C was a real highlight
I love Memphis Blues and was totally psyched when they started riffing it. It started great ...
Obviously disappointed that it didn't get carried out. I felt bad for Bob, and bad for me!
2nd set more than made up for it. Didn't know Welcome to the Dance, but liked it a lot better than the Groaner from Night 1 (Days Between).
Nice touch with Let It Grow at the end.
Time to bury Satisfaction / JBG. those tunes have exhausted their shelf life after 40 years on AOR. Although, many did seem to have a rockin' good time during Satisfaction ...
Blows me away that anyone is surprised/outraged about a few blown verses of Memphis Blues. First of all, it's Bobby! Second of all, the song has like 10 verses. Hearing only 6 or 7 out of 10 certainly didn't ruin my night.
these guys are rockin - flubs be damned!
>>>why does Phil bother going out on tour with Weir?!?
The consensus here on the dip shit zone is either 1. for the money or 2. that Bob is dying.
Millions have wondered for decades why highly skilled musicians like Garcia, Lesh & Kreutzmann would want Weir in their band. To be The Grateful Dead was the understandable answer back in the day. Weir contributed well to THAT band THEN.
Now it is completely disapointing that we don't get a good Phil & Friends lineup because Phil wants to play Furthur and The Dead with Bobby aka The Weakest Link.
SADLY...Bob IS the weakest link nowadays..SADLY! He cant remember the words to his own songs, and he wants to sing the Jerry tunes too? C'mon! And it certainly is not just Memphis Blues.
Bobby blew so many lyrics between these two nights I finally lost count, though Memphis Blues certainly had the most forgotten words of any song. Blowing verses in both Cold Rain & Snow and Touch the night before was pretty bad too. But as has been said, this is nothing new for Bobby. I think his playing though was as good as ever and he certainly lost that pot belly he had.
As to my impressions of the music, I was favorably impressed with the overall sound of this amalgamation. As much as I have liked most of the other guitarists Phil and TD have used (unlike many here that have complained bitterly about many, if not most, as not having any style in common with the fat man), I have to admit that using a fake Jerry with real chops for this version of Dead Cover Band was a pretty damn good move.
I had the center rail both nights and for me, the first night blew away the second one. Both nights had some mediocre moments, as well as some standouts. However, on night one to open NYC with a rousing Truckin' and to have an amazing R&C in that set, as well as a rowdy Ramble On Rose (with my only issue being they came off a huge peak in the song to settle into an all too ordinary Looks Like Rain - thanks Bobby for killing my buzz); at least they ended that set with Cosmic Charlie. Then to open the second with a very solid rendition of KSM with all that followed was like they opened the throttle pretty wide and set it on cruise. And the jam they did in Scarlet Begonias was pretty damn special. Frankly, I don't know where there is even any debate on which night stood out.
In the end there is this. I had not bought either disc beforehand, but after Wednesday I went and bought only the first night's, so that should tell you something. Money talks.
if you listen to the show on December 12 or 13, just a few nights later you will understand why I say "spoiled deadheads" because they are true gems. By the way my friend, I very much respect the hard work you do to afford a 60 buck ticket. it is very steep but standard price these days. listen with your heart and your ears and enjoy the ride. one of my favorite all time shows was Phil and Friends in WI on October 30, 99. Kimock had just left the band and it was a 4 piece. Not the greatest from a music stand point but one of my favorites because it was so unique. Other bands would have cancelled for the night but Phil just dropped more bombs!!! Peace, love and tons more shows.
I don't get it...I saw Rat Dog twice in the past year, and between the two shows my pals and I only caught one lyric goof by Bobby, and it was a minor one during Loser, which Bobby caught himself, smiled, and kept his cool.
It seems when there is more hype and bigger crowds (I know these Futher shows haven't been 'huge' per say), a small flub by Bobby can quickly fluster him, and more screw ups ensue.
I don't mind Bobby 'Shatnering' lyrics, it's his style sometimes, and that is that, as long as it's his song to sing. But it does seem to cause some real problems when the band is harmonizing, or trading lyrics, etc. such as in the end of Deal, Half-Step, etc. When Bobby does support vocals, with his what I'll call 'blues wailing', it also seems to cause trouble, however, when it is well timed, and everything comes together right, I think it can sound great. My hope is that vocally and lyrically the band just needs a little time to gel...if not, they need maybe simplify lyrically, and not try some of these lyrical innovations they've come up with (i.e. Half Step)
I feel bad when I hear Bobby getting bad mouthed, but there is some truth at times. Don't forget why he is there though, the sound that he invented helped to create the GD style we know. Also don't forget that this is a GD spin off, and like the GD, they will be smoking hot when they're on, and maybe a little painful at times when they're off. That's what helps to make those special nights truly memorable.
>>>the sound that he (Bob Weir) invented helped to create the GD style we know...
can you elaborate on the sound that Bobby invented?
The fact that it is difficult for me to place into words , I hope, makes a statement in itself...it's ecclectic to say the least, different to the point that you cannot say he derived his style directly from some other predecessor, and FURTHURmore, he (with phil) lays down everything that sets the stage for Jerry (or JK) to throw down the epicly face melting jams and lead solos that we all love so, so, so much! I saw an interview somewhere with Jerry, and when the interviewer inquired " How do you come up with your improvisional solos on the spot?" Jerry replies something along the lines of "Well, I'm in the dark. Then bobby starts playing, and these musical revelations occur to me, and based off of what bobby is laying down, I follow suit, and what comes out is what comes out....I couldn't do it without him."
^ Nonetheless, Bobby is an old scroungy mutt, like one from the pound. And you know what I've found, if you shower those types of mutts with love and undying patience to see them for who they truely are, you will find GOLD. Love Bobby, love what has done, and most importantly love what he can still do, and may do in the future. Shower him with praise even when he flubs a lyric or two...after all, for what other reason than music and love and love of music are we here for? THat's all! GOD BLESS THIS BAND!
Peace and love, and cosmic prayers for a soul shattering, mind bending, crippled by music NEW YEAR'S EVE in SAN FRANCISCO!!!!!!
I still appreciate Bob's rhythm guitar playing ability, and understand his pivotal role in the GD. If he would shut up and play guitar I would be a big Bob fan. Problem is, I cringe every time he opens his mouth. I don't hate the guy, but can't stand listening to him anymore. It is not just flubbing a lyric. His voice is shot, has been for years. Not even competent. I think he fucks up the music real bad. That is why I prefer Phil & Friends without Bob, and don't have tremendous interest in Furthur.
