A very large, rightonfortherighton to Greg! Of course, as always too to taperrob...bummer about snipage on feedage...
Thanks Greg i coulnt make the show but u made my nite
sorry they kicked u out
seems that they didn't take kindly to the live feed... Guy said he was with the band. Guess they saw the videos and were pissed. Fun while it lasted. Hope everyone enjoyed it... Have to grab the flac tonight when i get home.
You would think there is less to loose, from a band prospective, with a live feed... More to actually gain.... Fuck-it, they are old men and don't understand the hand that feeds them anymore..... Kinda why I am hesitant to feed them these days....... Assholes... Go Greg!!
...and being from Seattle, and a part of their MAJOR West coast DISS, I'm even more put off by these guys....
p.s.- the music, unfortunately for my prediction, sounds AMAZING!!!!!!!!
even back in the day they never wanted you to tape from in front of sound boardl i can tell you countless stories of switching out the tape at the last second so security would get a blank. not a new game but thanks for the effort greg.
Yes... Too bad about Greg. The guy was just trying to do something nice for the fans who couldn't be present or those of us across the country.
It's not like anyone's going commercial with his stream.
The worst part of it, is that it sounds like he got tossed from the show entirely.
Too bad someone had to take it upon themselves to ruin his kind deed.
what happened to our updates? Taperrob get thrown tooo?

Can't wait to listen to that foxy jam teases
Good! Many thanks TR. you are our lifeline!
oops sorry for steppin on ur toes rob, my Bad. I got nothing but love for you and your skills!
Sweet thanks Taper Rob!
I feel like that was the first "Minglewood" I caught in a long ass time...
That's what I like about this band, I can see songs like "Alabama" and "Minglewood" and probably countless others from the GD catalog yet to be unveiled yet ... bring 'em on! THANKS!!
First set was about the same as the Hammerstein shows. Had its moments, nothing special.
Then the second set. Wowzaa!!!
I bet this is the best set of the run.
They made a believer out of me. Took the sixth set of this run to do it.
In the best sounding venue of the run too.
I will post a full review later today, time to go to la la land.
Short review The jam and vocal scat, led by John, in Shakedown was KILLER
Second set Best second set I have seen in years, they were like the energizer bunnies tonight, they kept going and going. During the encore, which was smokin, the wives and families were all on the side of the stage dancing their asses off
A very special night indeed.
Other than being a long drive, the Chevrolet Theater was a very pleasant place to see a show – few security hassles and good acoustics. And it was nice to see a mix of old and young on stage. For those who have not seen him, (me included) John Kadlecik was a revelation. There has been some complaining here and elsewhere about him being too similar to Jerry, not original enough, etc. For me it was great to see the songs played with the tonal qualities and melodic signposts that I have missed so much since Jerry died. And while his whole stage persona is reminiscent of Jerry, his playing to me has just enough southern edge to differentiate it from Jerry’s bluegrass fluidity. In other words he is able to speak Jerry’s language, but in his own dialect.
That said this is still a young band that has some work to do before things completely gel. The Shakedown opener was great – funky and fully worked out. The rest of the first set was basically blues rock, and gave Kadlecik a chance to shine. Loose Lucy brought a smile to my face – it’s been a long time for that one. (It don’t take much to get me off the ground). And a fine Music Never Stopped to end the first set – perhaps Bobby’s best vocal turn of the night.
The second set was full of challenging songs, some of which came off better than others. The absolute highlight of the show had to be the Eyes of the World – the band just cliqued on that one – it was long, tight, and powerful and went to some interesting places. Born Cross Eyed was played well, but is an extremely difficult song to pull off vocally, and Bobby no longer has the power or youthful exuberance required to put this song across the way it needs to be sung. Kadlecik, on the other hand, could probably due a good vocal job on many of the songs that Phil and Bobby are still singing.
The only major let down for me was the Dark Star. As with a lot of Post Jerry incarnations, the band seems to have a lot of trouble finding the right groove for this one, and often sounded forced or disorganized. The really great Dark Stars revolved around an Ebb and Flow between Jerry and Phil that just seems to be missing. It takes a certain chemistry to bring off unstructured music in a convincing way – and that chemistry isn’t quite there yet. All was forgiven and forgotten by the St. Stephen->Eleven jam, which was surprisingly tight and energized.
As a warm-up for the major tour next year, this show revealed a band with a lot of potential. It’s incredible that we still get to see these guys on stage playing 3 hours of music with Phil going on 70. A reminder to count life’s blessings.
GREG - -- - EMAIL ME!!!
nice review Andy and nice point to remind us to count our blessings.
I've said it before, say it again. If the Grateful Dead were indeed "guilty" of being on "autopilot" the last few years of their existence, they have more than made up for it since Jerry's death. They have actually worked overtime in making bands, music, and providing both art and entertainment. They've come a long way. I remember Further in 96 and Phil's first few gigs with the broken angels. They've grown as artists. I really appreciate their efforts. That doesn't mean its always worked out. I like the latest efforts. Its fun. It sure beats NFL.
It's easy to take all their efforts for granted. See you in Chicago.
Andy that's the best review of a post Dead incarnation show that I've seen. Thank you.
"The absolute highlight of the show had to be the Eyes of the World –"
It certainly seemed that way from the feed; that song was gelled and smoking hot, great instrumental interplay.
If it really was someone from the band that kicked Greg out they should be ashamed of themselves. What the hell is the harm of having someone do that? The show is already going, you're not losing ticket sales. That's absolute bullshit.
I thought the Dark Star was great. Went into many many interesting places and was nice and loooong, like a Dark Star should be. The whole show was great. This band is the real deal.
Nice review Andy
Drving down we expected a long traffic jam to get into but there was none, so we were out of the car by 6:45pm. It was wicked cold and the wind was bitter. We walked over to a mini Shakedown, you had to give to the handful of folks who had set up, after a couple quick pass throughs were were like, "It is too freakin' cold"
There were a fair amount of folks looking for tickets. Not the night you want to be locked out.
We were in very quickly and the front lobby, which is the old theatre in a round has a high beautiful dome dark wood plank roof, was festive. The Wharf Rats were set up right as you walked in and one voter registration booth. It was so early that they were not even letting folks into the theatre, pushing those F&B sales. We ran ito an old buddy from 25 years prior, so that was cool.
The vibe was quite relaxed and I think for the majority that had no insights into what could happen and were very open.
I ran into Lyn and Bob before hand and bob had high expectations
We had decent seats off to Phil's right in 209. We could not see Jeff, unless he was on the B3.
Nice to see then jump right into Shakedown,John singing lead, and the crowd erupted and were on their feet from the get go. It was clear right out of the gate that the interaction between the three was really starting to gel and Phil really was strong in the mix. His tone seems alittle sharper now than in the spring so there was an added power there.I think it should be also noted that this will be the the show inwhich John really start jumping into the driver seat and driving the jams. He really cranked it up and the end jam was really enthralling. Then he led this cool vocal scat that got Bob, Phil and all of us singing along. It was a great begining.
Alabama, again sung by John, was full on rockin and Jeff wailed on the B3 and the band continued to crank up the intensity. John's first solo was rippping. At the end he did not want to end the song, Jeff and Phil did not see this coming, but it demonstrated that this band can get loose in a the right way. This ending really built up to an unexpected surprise and I thinking everyone knew we were in for a special night.
It was also quite clear to everyone that John is not trying to intiminate Jerry, and so when he went off the audience roared it support. His tone is like Andy described but I will also add hint of Kimock and Pat Matheney too.
Bob breaks out a faster tempo Schoolgirl , that was solid. Pride of Cucuamonga was another set high light. It had that jangley happy go lucky feel, but they hit all the changes perfectly and really played, as muy buddy described, a sexy jam a the end, before bringing it back home to a perfect ending. Very sweet.
Bob sang Loose Lucy and it was fun and very good. Once again they added a nice vocal "yeah" scat at the end, which had John pointing to the audience to encourage them to join in the fray, very nice.
I think by this time the majority of folks were plesantly surprised and won over by this latest incarnation.
I was hoping for a nice Bobby break out, but he put his foot back on the break, and broke out Minglewood. It was good but after School girl I was like bad Bobby.
All was forgiven when they went right into Music. This one really had a much more directness, than the spring versions, to it and the jam at the bridge was perfect, but then Bobby started the " never stop" chorus. Ugh!!
Then they were off again and John really played some sweet licks and his phrasing was quite good. Thye could have gon another for another minute or two but Bobby cut it alittle short, but in a subtle way. He did play the pink strat the entire set.
Set two, even for us old die hards sometimes you just don't know what to expect, but I did call the Eyes and DS.The security was very loose and this place has a wide carpeted floor seperating the two sections and it was full of people so I opted to go down there for more dancin' and better sound. I was not dispointed in either area.
This set begun with a jam, it had a jazzy feel to it, with Phil being very strong and playing some deep powerful notes. John's tone, with just that tinge of distortion was a beautiful compliment.Jeff was on the grand piano and Bobby was really in there too.
I have to say that the drummers really did an amazing job this second set and were very much in synch too.
The tranistion in China Catsunflower was very nice with John and Bobby really gelling. John sang it and Jeff was on the swirling B3, it was really quite inspiring and Phil was a monster!
The bridge was outstanding, and then they were off!
Phil was a total happy camper and it quickly became apparant that Rider was not our destination. John and Phil gave it away twice and after the second tease the jam took on a slight Mediterranean flavor, with John really hitting some nice high notes. The were really gelling quite nice and this jam had a fresh sound and then a perfect slight of hand into a majestic mid tempo Eyes of the World.
Phil vocals were strong and the crowd erupted.
As with most recent versions Jeff takes the first solo on the baby Grand and he really spun a beautiful solo. The rest of the band creating that vibrant sonic back ground and then John started playing more swaying chords as Jeff built up his solo and then and amazing tranisition to his first run. Wow! It was good.
Then the next verse, which was really sweet, and then John was off again and really played some of his best stuff of the night so far. Truely inspired. The other thing that should be noted is that Phil's full attention toward John and his physical proximity, at points he was right next to him, to Bobby was like nothing I have seen before during this set.
It was clear that a awakening was occuring between these guys and it was a joy to witness.
I love Bobby singing Born Crossed Eyed and thought they pulled it off extremely well
Now I differ on Andy's take on Dark Star, this one was much better than the one played in Nassua. It was classic in the sense that it had many parts that were unique and the flow of it was very melodic and repeatedly built up to nice musical peaks and the theme was aways maintain. You never knew it was not Dark Star.
John soloing to the first verse was quite impressive and then a very soft landing, about 4:20+ in, and then Phil sang the first verse, followed by Bobby and then John. I thought this was very cool.
Then they really went off and you have to admit that this band can jam and create some new and fresh sounding.
At around the 10:40 mark it gets a litte weird, but a good weird, and then they bring it down almost to a hush. Jeff is playing some cool winds sounds and it sound like Bobby was thinking something like maybe Watchtower, but then John comes back in and starts playing these fragile notes and they all begin to sway again, ever so softly, and the DS theme comes again. This time with more of a early '74 feel. I am not complaining LOL
They float back into the mirror shatter verse perfectly, again all sharing in the singing.
They end it with this unique chorus of then all singing " diamonds, diamonds, diamonds".
At over 18 minutes they tranistion out.
Then they pick up the pace and Phil start pulling at the Eleven and with a Stephen hint in there too. Musically they are reaching for another peak and reach it quickly. This sequence last for over 4 minutes and then the first OMG moment of the night and maybe the tour.
Strawberry Fields Forever, what a total surprise! Phil must have been on the Zone reading some of your posts It was the first time I ever heard it and Phil delivered a poetic version, the band responds by nailing all the changes and the ending is quite good then the fire works go off again. I have to say this St. Stephen was almost perfect and it raged! Hearing it late in the set was awesome and the end jam lead by John was jar dropping, then we get the Mighty Eleven and this version again was tight and passionate and fully played out. John soared on these two songs, it was incredible! Then the energizer bunnies just keep going and going and directly in a rousing NFA.
This one was easily one of the best I have seen since back in the day it even had some bop bops, and it had the most enduring NFA chant after they ended it from the CT faithful that I have witnessed. It good to be back!
Then to come back with a smokin' GDTRFB was easily one of my all time best encore ever. All the wives and families were now off to stage right dancing and hooting and hollaring.
Clealy a special set for us all.
Well done guys!
from my other thread:
I thought Weir was really good last night...lots of engaged guitar playing (rhythm & lead, signature riff on china cat) and for those who dislike his singing, a good balance between the three vocalists...he looks great, as well, much better shape than recent years...from up top in the dim light, it looked like a late 80s bobby on stage from time to time...pink guitar and the 335
a real solid show and set list...personally, I think the drums are a limiting factor with this band, not much drive and jay lane contributes little, in my opinion...JK seemed to cut loose in the second set
good sound last night
I'd just like to say that phil's "light show" is about a psychedelic as putting a blue light bulb in a lamp, aiming at a wall, and swinging it from side to side occasionally...LOL
looking very forward to RCMH
Wow Ted... What an amazingly beautifully detailed review! Thanks for your thoughts and insights!
A perfect no-punches thrown review, yet you do point at some of the bald spots with that old-school "it is what it is" reality! Great stuff man!
They certainly blew me away during the Fox run in Oakland. Sounds like the jelly is starting to stick and becoming delightfully gooey!
Looking forward to the NYE stand in San Francisco!
Thanks Ted.. That was a beautiful review! I think John, with his sometimes scarily similar Jerry-like tone and musical flow, is possibly awakening old feelings and places that Bobby & Phil haven't felt and visited in a LONG time... It will be very special to see this take place on this tour.... It's kind of emotional for me to listen to... The Shakedown jam(pre vocal scat) is jaw dropping... This may be a bit sac-relig, but at times you could close your eyes & not know what year it is... It put a lump in my throat a few times.... Portland, Oregon show can't come quick enough!!!!!
Ted, perfect review. I was there and agree 100%. A VERY special night, esp after the less than great nyc shows. Last nights show was truly wonderful. Hope they somehow top it in NJ! H>S>F and Terrapin are on deck, and if they can bring it like they did last night, look out!
hey.....I like the NFL !
I have to agree that Ted nailed it! I want to say that Jay and Joe were amazing. I loved that they didn't have to "fill in the blanks" and Jay could jam and sing and be sooooooo happy.
These guys had a great time and although I was REALLY skeptical about John, I LOVED it!!!!!
This band is a keeper!!!!!!! Phil and Bobby have never seemed more connected and Jeff is the monster of all time. His "waterfall" crescendo's during Eyes and beyond brought tears to my eyes.
It doesn't get any better.....HURRY UP and JUMP on the BUS!!!!!!
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and much love to all my brothers and sisters
I'm so glad you and the boys found the groove. The Oakland shows were excellent. I thought and was somewhat surprised at all the complaining for the NYC shows....Can't wait for New Years!
New York was an aberration. Let us never speak of it again. BIG props to Jeff. The guy is unreal. I put him right up there with anyone who played keys in the Dead (bar Brent). Bobby knows how to find em!
Hat tips to Andy and Ted for their outstanding reviews. I agree with Andy that this band is still in the gelling phase.
That said, WOW! I came to this show with measured expectations but high hopes that this band might take themselves and us to places that haven't been accessible since Jerry died. My hopes were met/exceeded. As Johnny 2 times put it, "I think John, with his sometimes scarily similar Jerry-like tone and musical flow, is possibly awakening old feelings and places that Bobby & Phil haven't felt and visited in a LONG time." BINGO Johnny! At least that's what I feel I witnessed last night.
FWIW, I have been a fan of John Kadlicek since 1999 and I like his similarities to Jerry. As long as he contributes to great music being played, that's what counts.
Phil, Bobby, John, Jeff, Jay and Joe, THANK YOU for last night! You brought me to a place I hadn't been in 15 years. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
The boys have been great. Despite Bobbys total brain freeze in NY. Phil seems to be keeping this train on the tracks at times.
But as someone noted earlier we have to be thankful for every show these days. Its the first tour where the boys have put the copy Jerry in place and it definetly brings some smiles.
Jeff Jay and Joe have been off the charts. i think Jeff has even grown so much over the last few years.
this band will jell some more and get better should be some great things to come.
Music is great from great musicians playing the music we love so how bad could it be.
Cant get too picky and cant really get over exuberant. Just live for the moment in time and enjoy it while we can.
looking forward to Viola, Golden Road, Lost Sailor St , H>S>F in Asbury
thanks for all the great reviews and vibes from this thread and show - sounds like what brought us here in the first place, a love for Phil and the music of the Grateful Dead!
Can't wait for New Years, you should have been at the Sunday show at The Fox,it was fucking incredible, sounds like last night was good also. I hear Phil's birthday at The Fox,Bruce!
Were tapers allowed? I was trying to find the show on archive, but didn't see anything...I missed the stream and would love to hear the show...
This show opened with a 10-12 minute Shakedown that was out-freakin-rageous. The show could have stopped right there and it would have been a winner.
I was 5th row, center stage. Quite easily some of the best jamming I've seen in 20 years of shows. The band's playing was telepathic- especially the exchanges between Phil & JK. All six played excellent. Russo is a fantastic fit. Lane is like Animal from the Muppets. JC is the wizard we already know him to be.
Despite the negative critiques (by some) of Mr. Weir's performances as of late, he played his tail off last nite, decorating the sound with some of those classic Bobby riffs from 74-80 (how about when he was bending the neck on his Gibson?) IMHO, he redeemed himself from a long list of lyrical atrocities by ABSOLUTELY NAILING the words in the William Tell Overture, delivering them flawlessly in 11/8 time!! Maybe that teleprompter helps; either way, Bravo Bobby!
And as for Mr. Lesh, his playing was inspired, articulate and powerful. He was clearly enjoying himself- smiling at the audience while he sang Eyes & parts of Dark Star, regularly leaning-in toward Bobby & John and outright giddy during some of the jamming. Taste Grate, Lesh Philling!!!
Many parts of the set list were well-played and most were outstanding. The transition from Chinacat into Eye's was flawless (and totally unexpected- have they done that before?). The Dark Star was a "Dark Star for Dark Star Fanatics"...priceless… several parts touched on the feel & theme of the 74 versions. St. Stephen captured the best of 69 & 77 with pinpoint precision. Born Cross Eyed & The Eleven were powerhouses. The jams inside Pride of Cucamonga and Alabama Getaway took those tunes into very cool space. I think GDTRFB ended a little past midnite.
JK's playing & style really conveys the sonic ambiance of the tunes- Grateful Dead music is part of his musical DNA and it clearly connects… I cant help but think it jogs some memories from Bob & Phil. Is this music nostalgic? Maybe, but they blew each song through the roof and to see Phil smiling, jamming & so transfixed (along w/ the others), I don’t much care if its nostalgia, reminiscing or flat-out GD impersonation... it was electrified, psychedelic mastery. And it rocked.
SIX PROUD WALKERS ON THE JINGLEBELL RAINBOW!!!!
>>Grateful Dead music is part of his musical DNA and it clearly connects… I cant help but think it jogs some memories from Bob & Phil.
I bet John and Phil are getting plenty of time to nerd out together on the intricacies of various versions of songs over the years...the two of them are really complementary actually...
thanks for the review...from the jinglebell rainbow
Does anyone know where to find a copy of this show for download? I've checked archive and etree but no luck, any help would be appreciated!
There were at least 3 mike stands on the main floor, not counting the two I saw in the soundboard area for "official" purposes.
You could purchase the official recording after the show, but I can find no link to downloading it now.
Quite odd that this one hasn't surfaced yet.
There were a lot more than 3 up at the back, under the balc. I pre-ordered the flacs from livedownloads.com. I hope its up today...
why has this show been the only one not on archive? This is riduculous!
On my way into this show I noticed signs all over the entrance saying that recording devices were not allowed. During the show I looked around and only saw one set of mics and I believe that guys was told to shut it down.
are you freaking kidding me? i hope it was the venue decision and not the bands. it sucks because this show fucking stood out man!
J Mckenna said "saw signs all over the place" re: no taping equipment....
This is interesting.. I was in 5th row & remember seeing a few folks w/ taping equipment asked to leave (or stop recording). I also distinctly remember seeing two large video cameras- one at each corner of the stage. Did anybody else see this? I wonder if the band recorded this show for a dvd?
>>> I wonder if the band recorded this show for a dvd?
If they did they struck gold.
Yeah I saw the video cameras too and one taper taking his gear back to his car. Maybe Justin will be doing some web shorts soon.
you would of thought since the lot scene was so cool and that you could smoke pot freely in the venue that we could enjoy some music for posterity. a dvd would be friggin' sweet!
This show just posted on Livedownloads.com
Carl F,
Quick question. First, this show is also up on archive.org. It is an audience recording. I cannot find anything on livedownloads.com to tell me if it is soundboard or not. My assumption is that it's SB but I really do not want to drop $16.50 for a FLAC of an audience recording. Can you confirm the recording at livedownloads.com is SB? Thank you in advance.
The recording is a crispy soundboard. You can listen to a sample of each song from the song menu on the right side.
Thank you Jason. Was there on Friday and this one is a MUST ADD to collection. Thanks again.
>>>I also distinctly remember seeing two large video cameras- one at each corner of the stage. Did anybody else see this? I wonder if the band recorded this show for a dvd?<<<
The cameras were for the 2 screens above either side of the stage, not for a DVD.
