E: Box Of Rain
A final Thank You to GDad and Posthead for their continuous LA Greek updates!!!
True zoners at their finest!!
Thanks to all for keeping us stay-at-homes informed!
My take: On paper, a solid but unspectacular setlist. Will be interesting to hear from show-goers about it.
Warfield, here they (and I) come!!!
>>Warfield, here they (and I) come!!!
I second that. Hope to see you on Sunday Garyfish.
It was a fun night! The Warfield is going to smoke for sure.
Will write more in the morning!
Can't go wrong with a Shakedown opener.
The China Cat Sunflower was a highlight!
The jam in Unbroken was cool.
Phil enjoyed the journey.
A great time was had at a solid show.
"On paper"
...it don't work like that.
What would a 'spectacular' show look like on paper?
Like this?:
Set One
Jerry, Jimmy and Warren walk onstage...! ;)
>>Can't go wrong with a Shakedown opener.
phil's opened with shakedown all three times that he's played the greek.
Looks stellar!
Any photos?
>>Can't go wrong with a Shakedown opener.
except when you see it 2/3 of the time. although i guess it does have to be played in LA. But WHAT ABOUT WEST LA FADEAWAY. Box of Rain encore instead? Lame.
For me, the setlist was very unspectacular, but the musicality of the whole affair was top notch. Called the shakedown opener, the cumberland, the sugaree, the box of rain as jokes because Ive seen phil play them about one thousand times each. However, all were great versions. The China Rider was exceptional, great jamming, a bit of telstar weirdness going on which the crowd seemed to like. As well in the Unbroken Chain. No significant bustouts. Some repeats from denver. Setlists are getting a bit stale! But all in all a really good show and a really good time at the LA Greek. It was great to finally see phil in LA after having to travel all over to see some shows. Really good vibe in the show and in the lot. Still, the people wanted some Althea and some West LA fadeaway!
Thanks Phil for coming out and throwing down! Another great time.
Absolutely awesome show...I missed Shakedown and FOTD, walked in during Bertha and the place was rockin....never let down after that...highlights were the HUGE China>Rider....biggest I've EVER heard, I mean they took it way, way out there, love the tentative title of atmospheric transition. Then of course the Unbroken Chain and the Wheel, which I called both, to my buddies, both were absolutely spot on......They played a part in the whell, where everyone hits the chord and it's like a subatomic bomb and you just ride they wave right!!?? they played this part in the whell and it was a like a big star burst, it was soooo amazing, actually really dont think i've heard heard that chord combo, bass bomb and cresendo like that before EVER. The tranistion at the end of Unbroken was a bit botched, but again, they took the jam part so out there, really let molitz shred on the release part...LC was brilliant all night, really great at building up froma particular first note he takes in a solo and then WHAM, they would bounce off what Larry builds up and just catapult inot another dimension it felt.
jackie actually did one thing during Jack Straw that absolutely made the 2nd set, he went right into the 2nd verse after the first jam, it created more space for what was to follow which was an epic chin>rider, Unbroken, Wheel and Frankilns. Such a good 2nd set....blew me away,...the sound was crisp and really really tight, the Box was perfect and Jackie played acoustic. Thank you Phil once again for a real good time, hope to see you at the Warfield. this band makes you think and they send a message, from the opening 2nd set Speedway, it was a complete trip through time and space....MOLO is freakin amazing...
agree with andrewB... phils setlist are getting a bit stale, shakedown opener, bertha, cumberland, speedway, sugaree, boxofrain closer, were all played exceptional, but i seen phil play these songs everytime i see him...
SECOND SET WAS MASSIVE!!!!!! CHINA RIDER WAS EPIC!!!! jack straw was a blast, and im not afraid to say it those two jackie songs were legit, i like how they keep em short though...
in all, so much fun to see phil in my hometown, great vibe all around, PHIL BOMBS!
btw, i really wanted west l.a. closer, but we got a semi-boring box of rain....
i havent got a sugaree or miss 1/2 step yet out of this band, really dont want china>rider to get played out
the shakedown was so lame im sorry but ive seen this band 12 times and theyve opened with shakedown at least 6 of those shows. WHERE WAS THE WEST LA FADEAWAY
Anyway, It was a terrific show with some wonderful interplay between jackie and Larry, as well as a meeting although brief with some Zoners.
A wonderful time was had by all and my oh my that new speedway was hot
West LA Fadeaway was not part of the journey last night... could have fit in with the themes of the 2nd set, but Don't Let the Devil Take Your Mind was in the slot WLAF could have fit in.
don't you understand what Phil was doing with the setlist last night?
You might have heard the Shakedown too many times in So Cal but this one last night was fat not ho hum at all..
I dig how even those that weren't pleased with setlist gave props to the playing of the tunes
Hard to deny that what the band did out there matched and or exceeded the energy the attendees put into getting to the show..
Security was extra cool felt no harsh vibes whatsoever
All the talk about The Greek being not so good a venue well last night would be an exception to that
"dont you understand what phil was doing with the setlist last night?"
enlighten us !
i understand shakedowns lyrics are perfect for l.a., but come on, my friends and i were joking about it...

Once again Phil was the vehicle, and as his passenger,I couldn`t have been more happy...er,until next time.
I drove 500 miles, for the all or nothing event and it was all I hoped it would be!!
Of course it would be nice on the pocketbook if Phil would come to Phoenix,or dare I say Tucson?!?!
The Greek!!! IS by far L.A.`s best venue! The video screens were tasty as ever! The background lighting in the woods made it as surreal as Telluride!I personally like a little more full blown Candace Eye-candy though,to really accent the psychedelics, but every part of the presentation was artful, musical and just masterful!!Jackie is dynamite!!Molo interacts with the ensemble more like another guitar,or keyboard,as an integral piece, rather than a subordnant!Molitz also "gets it" when it comes to the percussive/rythmic role of a great "rock" keyboardist.L.C.has an excellent ability to work and build an extended solo into an ecstatic celebration,as well as providing the sizzlin` hootanany on anything fueling that locomotive stuff!
This band DELIVERS!! Thanks guys!!
..
Late arriving crowd it went for 1/3 full at start of Set 1 to 75% when things got rolling
Wow, is that a pic of the L.A. Greek? From reading comments here-and-there on this site, I was imagining a converted warehouse on the outskirts of a crack infested neighborhood.
Such a great time!
Thanks for showing us the ropes Gdaddy!
Geez what a beautiful venue. Hard to believe it's in LA...It looks like its in the Sierras or something...
Thanks for the photos...
Geez what a beautiful venue. Hard to believe it's in LA...It looks like its in the Sierras or something...
Thanks for the photos...
FYI the venue is fucking awesome and LA is fucking awesome.....as for WEST LA Fadeaway ....why the fuck would they play it in LA people ........what are you talking about? Play it during the summer tour when you are in the Mid-west....COME ON! As for dont let the devil take your mind, cool jam, but lame song....the rest of Jackie's tunes are very kewl....Have a great time at Warfield tonight ya'll!
"my friends i were joking about it"
we were joking before the show that there would be a shakedown opener....
not joking about donor rap....
have fun tonight everyone, ill be here
Whoever said DIDNT YOU KNOW WHAT PHIL WAS DOING WITH THE SETLIST..... of course man i had a fatty ready to go when they hit those first notes of New speedway, And i did understand and also very much enjoy how they played dont let the devil take your mind right after. Very fitting indeed. That said, how many times has this band played West La Fadeaway and furthermore how many times have they played in LA.
PEace
>>>I personally like a little more full blown Candace Eye-candy though
There were no moving lights for this show.
There was 2 elderly middle eastern looking couples sitting 2 rows behind us on the side rail in upper level
They were dressed up women nice dresses men sports coats..as if they had gone out to dinner and were attending say an Opera or legit play
Straight as an arrow sitting in their seats the entire time taking it all in..
The women covered their mouths and noses with their silk scarves when smoke drifted their way
Danita spoke to them asked them what brought them to the concert
"We wanted to attend a public event"
They were Persian they told Danita
Lesh could poss be a shortened Americanized Iranian name..
Phil Leshmani..??..
Nice old school Los Angeles homes around Griffith Park going up Vermont Ave into venue flashback to LA in earlier times
My first trip to So Cal from Chicago was 1960 flew on a propeller plane
It's nice to see the Greek get some props here.
Don't believe the hype, folks, LA is not nearly as bad as people want to make it out to be. There are little gems like the Greek all over town. As they say, you just gotta poke around.
The venue really is fantastic. And it does seem like you're in the middle of the woods sometimes. And in a way, being in Griffith Park, you are.
The show was a blast and I had the fortune of tickets down in the pit. Talk about an intimate experience. I could nitpick, but I won't. I had a great time.
Been a while since I posted, but just wanted to say I had a great time at the greek. Haven't seen Phil since the Q, so it's been a while, but I really quite enjoyed the new lineup.
The playing was really excellent and I enjoyed the jamming. These guys aren't as tight as the Q, I don't think anyone can be, much more soloing but it was quite fun to see the "kids" tear into some of the classics.
Highlights: I called the Shakedown opener and was singing Cumberland all week. Cumberland was very different from the Q's version. Actually, it was almost more chaotic, with constant and nearly independent soloing by everyone. The "Atmospheric Jam" in the > between China & Rider was well-titled and a very nice piece of jamming. I also really liked what Molitz did with the jam during Unbroken Chain.
Maybe it was during Franklin's, but there was a great groove where Jackie was trying to get a hard jam rolling but the band didn't seem to respond. He just stepped into the middle of the stage, turned around toward the band, and shredded the holy hell out of his guitar. The power he unleashed in that solo was pretty damn incredible.
Over all, it was a great show and a great night out. Had great seats right in the middle behind the pit. I also got to go backstage for my first time ever during the setbreak and saw Molitz passing by.
Wow…marvelous…off the hook…spectacular… ecstatic…. stunningly good vibes… awesome… out of this world..
Just as Phil says he has run out of adjectives to describe John Molo, it is hard to describe the amazing sounds coming out of this band. What a musical journey! What a treat it was to see them, anywhere at all, but this spectacular venue is just right up the street from me. I saw this band debut in Santa Barbara back in September, then Mardi Gras and Portland, this show was overwhelmingly the best! The band is tight -- The first set in Santa Barbara last September was dubbed by some “The Jackie Green Review” as it was dominated by Phil’s new kid and songs, the hair gel and skinny black jeans were not exactly what us old deadheads came to see. Although I thought “old Dixie Down” was beautiful… You have to believe that Phil knows what he is doing -- By now Jackie and his short, sweet, sexy little songs, his clear, strong voice and harmonica have really grown on me. This guy has a lot of talent of his own, and brings new life to the old songs. “This darkness got to give…” Perhaps Phil has found his legacy to keep the music playing through the next generation??...!!??
Everyone says they called the Shakedown opener. Not surprisingly, it isn’t too often they come to LA, I have seen many a show open this way. It lets you know you are in for the old Grateful dead like magic…
One thing that I do miss from the old days is the parking lot scene. Driving into the Greek and their “stack parking” where you have 2 inches of space between you and the next car is always fun. There was plenty of LAPD around, on their bikes, poised to pounce on any unsuspecting person who dared to light a cigarette or drink a beer. Although there was really no pavement to pound, just the grassy hillsides of Griffith Park, spent over an hour, searching for something psychedelic. There certainly is a dearth of it these days; did not encounter even one grilled cheese or one Humboldt county ganga treat vendor. What happened to the veggie burritos??
As luck would have it, my beau had the magic bestowed upon him at the last minute, just in time to make it inside before Phil.. Inside, there were good vibes coming from the stage and Jackie’s brief warm up as he let loose a few chords of Bertha made me excited to feel that old “anticipation” you get waiting for the show to start. I have always thought the genius of Phil’s band, in whatever form, was taking the old dead songs we love and either completely changing the melody or the rhythm, and breathing a whole new light into the music.
Sugaree-- was Sensational! Jackie’s silky voice You’ve got to Shake it! Shake it! Sugaree! Was as good as I have ever heard the song. The keyboards were smoking! When I close my eyes and dance, going to that place in my head, riding high and floating on each note, seeing the notes intertwine perfectly in a psychedelic harmony, my body being carried by the music, I feel just like I did when I was 18 in college, dancing in some pavilion in Charlottesville or the Fox Theatre, although that was some 30 years ago….
If you weren’t in Deadhead Heaven, where were you?
Thank you Phil. Thanks for keeping it going. If you love something, let it be this music. Anyone you love is going to break your heart, sooner or later…
nice freakin pic man, that show was INCREDIBLE
Listening to this show for first time..http://www.archive.org/details/paf2008-05-11.neuma nn.91892.flac16
Its actually as good as I thought it was at the time
Not all that exploratory but a solid rock and roll fiesta..
G.Dad - thanks for posting this!
This is my favorite show of all of the May shows.
Superb second set.
Glad you got to see it live!
