Night two. Just getting started. Right Phil?
If it's anything like the album(s) set last night live and in person then this band is just winding up to set the place or maybe the city on fire......enjoy the show as I will be back in person on Fri, Sat, Sun SMILE SMILE SMILE and stay in touch

Doin that rag
Thanks to hedspace and pt
no rosemary?
Rosemary
rosemary sung from some girl onbalcony? no idea but a friend just texted m that
Donna this weekend for the shakedown and terrapin albums
lol
Cool...My guess is that they'll play this album and then Workingman's later in the evening....That should be very cool, especially if you get an Easy Wind.
Rosemary before doing that rag. Phils now singing mts.
Hate to be negative, but anyone think that maybe Phil is doing the albums "right" before he hangs it up? Not that some of them weren't right to begin with, but as a whole we all know the magic is in the live interpretations
nah this is a farewell to the warfield
Ht---I doubt it...But these are the last Warfield shows ever...So I think it is more about that
He's just making sure Jackie knows all of this stuff when they hit the road in the summer.
wonder if they'll get a Barbed-Wire Whipping Party bonus track
Fire tease before chinacat
>>>Barbed-Wire Whipping Party
lol
my bud sold bootleg pressed discs of that on tour for years a long time ago
What's become of the baby, cosmic
The whole album in its entirty
UJB, set 2 opener?
some of these could be pretty interesting if they rehearsed enough, or they could be painful trainwrecks once the novelty wears off
I hope Bobby doesn't take the cue and perform the entire "Where The Beat Meets The Street" ouch
so Bobby is there tonight as well?...I was there last night will be there all weekend...
american beauty and wake of the flood - FRiday
mars hotel and blues for allah - saturday
terrapin and shakedown - sunday
WOW !!!!
what about live/dead and europe '72
i bet they only do studio albums
that would be awesome, seems as if studio only unless we get some 3 set bombers this weekend
from what i'm hearing, sunday may go until 4 a.m. but thats just a rumor. the rumor is though that the staff at the warfield was told to expect to stay until 5 a.m. sunday/monday
Reckoning was recorded (partially) at the Warfield in 1980 . . . what about some acoustic material?
ahhhhhhhhhh
^^^^^^^ ummm dont get it???
Side one
1. "Dark Star"
Side two
1. "St. Stephen"
2. "The Eleven"
Side three
1. "Turn On Your Love Light"
Side four
1. "Death Don't Have No Mercy"
2. "Feedback"
3. "And We Bid You Goodnight"
Thats Live/Dead....I was thinking workingmans
I would guess: UJB, High Time, Dire Wolf, etc
is it still setbreak???
it would be weird to do an acoustic 2nd set, so my $$ is on the star
wow, thats a long setbreak
I think thats why it's taking so long
either its a long set break or everyone's having too much fun to pick up a phone
They're probably setting up for an accoustic set
they are rehearsing We bid you Goodnight
rehearsing? now?
thats what dressing rooms are for
Is that where you are?
nope, just guessing like everybody else, just seems weird to close a show with an acoustic set, when the GD always did the acoustic stuff first, is a long break though
The Bid You Goodnight fan encore outside the Fillmore was pretty sweet....
this boy's got to head to bed, thanks for the updates and enjoy!
dark star
star it is!
They're not gonna play Live/Dead....seems like they are doing studio albums....In order....That would make this set Workingman's
so jealous now! damnit!!!! wish i was there!!! aaaarrggghhh
Well, I',m wrong.....as usual
does that mean you have to through in the following albums
Skullfuck
Bears Choice
Europe '72
so 2 st steven's then?
Stephen
quicker to spell with a v
did it matter?
does it now?
i would answer if i only knew how
gotta check out the end of the Laker game, be back for side 4
>>>terrapin and shakedown - sunday
Ugh, I hope not!! Other than the Terrapin Suite (which would be cool), Estimated and Shakedown, not a ton of great material in those two albums (especially Shakedown) is there? You'd definitely need Bobby for most of that material. I'd hope Phil would add some good psychedelic filler (or is that gone after tonight's show??). That would seem like kind of a weak way to end such an interesting run.
Hell, Mars and Blues for Allah will be a blast, though! I could see a special guitarist (Barry, Trey??) sit in for that one (could probably use it for the Blues for Allah stuff).
Why dont ya all chat in chat room or in other stuff..??..
Chat room address is http://www.philzone.com/portal/
Pick a Portal Skin no password needed..
Other stuff ../439459/498106. html?1210828805#MT
Got to go back to work..
See ya about 1AM Pacifc Time
>>>gotta check out the end of the Laker game, be back for side 4
Lakers up by 5 with 20 secs. left.
I think the only reason that theyre playing Live Dead is so that they can play W-man's and Amer. Beauty on the same night....They probably will stick to studio material after this one.....I also heard that Sun night's show may be a late one....4-5 am. end time.
where is the set list for the second set...if in fact it has started...speculation is not real time
Did they play the entire St Stephen twice, or did they play part of it in set 1 and then finish it in set 2?
>>>where is the set list for the second set...if in fact it has started...speculation is not real time
I dunno maybe you should check out the Ratdog board. LOL.
haha speculation schmeculation. how bout truf?
I tried the RATDOG BOARD.....But Bobby is asleep....and Phil is throwing out the tunes tonight
my friend texted me dark star, then 30 minutes later he texted "still ds"
if they play the 2 acoustic albums on friday
then saturday will be Skull & Roses and Europe '72 on which One More Saturday Night is a track
I hope they abandon this album stuf and do more covers and Jackie stuff to be honest, but I do wish I was at these two shows
here is a complete discography
http://home.frognet.net/~scott/albums.html
he also said theres a rumor floating around warren haynes is in the building
Warren would make sense for the rest of the album.
I was in the building last night and will be there on Fri Sat Sun as well....Bring on Warren and everybody else to make it a party....because all we have to do is SMILE SMILE SMILE
UPDATE PLEASE?
st stephen
30+ minute dark star now st stephen
this is one of my favorite albums put out by the dead if indeed they follow thru with the whole live/dead. so much feeling in the whole thing
nice
is this like the 12th Stephen 2 night?
So, did they play the full St Steph. twice or did they just go back into an unfinished version?
St. Stephen back in to St. Steven back in to St. Stephen?
i asked my buddy what he thinks of the double stuff and he says, "I don't know what to think."
hhhmmm i hope this carries through ok.
Couldn't get a Stephen for years and Phil plays two in one night. LOL.
That one in Charlotte was great a few years back
might not be so cool if you're there, but i'm looking forward to listening to the recordings of these shows...
Are the DANCERS back tonight? Thanks!
Can we get a complete setlist of this show up to this point?
there could be worse things than 2 Stephens in one night.
>>Can we get a complete setlist of this show up to this point?
Apparently:
Set I:
Aoxomoxoa
Set II (In Progress):
(30-Minute?) Dark Star
St. Stephen
Set 1:
St Stephen
Duprees
Rosemary
Doin That Rag
Mountains of the Moon
China Cat
What's Become of the Baby
Cosmic Charlie
Set 2:
Dark Star
St Stephen
Any guests or update?
I guess we already know the rest of the setlist huh?
The GD were always about spontaneity. In da moment.
Feedback, according to a text update
I'm guessing they went through The Eleven, Lovelight and Death Dont have No Mercy before that
cool Live Dead...
does that mean Friday will be Workingmen's and American Beauty?
>>>The GD were always about spontaneity. In da moment.
This aint the GD.
....................................
>>>>>>>>>This aint the GD.
Hell no it ain't.
this band fires on way more cylinders even the studebaker at 68 years old.
Once again, in the door before midnight.
Tonight I don't even need to shower before I give you my review.
Taupe and Vermillion!
That's it! Taupe and Vermillion!
PS Mark Karan rocks!
full list?
Run that by me again
Also, the girl on the balcony, I think it was Larry's wife.
and two st. stephens doesn't suck.
>>PS Mark Karan rocks!<<
Amen to that!
So MK was out there tonight? Whole show or...?
bobby?
and the Doin' that Rag was much better in person than the denver tape lead me to believe.
Doin that rag was okay in denver, but letting that dude Molitz sing it is a bad move...That guy is an average keys player, but far below average as a singer
No bobby.
Doin that Rag was really good in person, it surprised me. Molitz singing is a shock, but I liked it tonight.
So just one example of why Mark Karan rocks...Larry and Jackie have been wearing those fancy $100 embroidered shirts. Turns out all of Mark's shirts have those fancy pearl buttons...and he's not even dressed up!
And Death Don't was a shining example of Jackie vocals! Much better than the Caution from last night.
By the way, It's "Sweet Anne Marie" not "Emily"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLC3sQB2aeU
Sweeeet Emily
1:08
I don't know who that video is of...But I know that Jerry sings "Sweet Anne Marie"
It's Ministry from the Bridge School Benefit in 1994. They sing Sweet Emily. Really it's all about perspective, Anne Marie and Emily aren't that different. Much like Bob Weir and Mark Karan. It's just a matter of how you perceive them...like taupe and vermillion.
What did Karan play on Emily?
what was the encore
Nearly everything...although, I can't say exactly when he showed up, there was no note taking tonight.
Karan played the entire 2nd set. That was the sickest Dark Star I've ever heard from PLF followed by perhaps the most thunderous Stephen this band has ever thrown down. Wow!
Well, the actual lyrics are "Anne Marie". This is how Robert Hunter wrote it on paper. It's not something that's up for debate. I'm not one to think in black and white terms, but this is an instance where the answer is definitive and very much black and white.
>>>what was the encore
And We Bid You Goodnight I would assume.
There was no encore, they bid us goodnight a la the end of live dead and that was it.
wow. i love the emotion that can be put into Death Don't. I wish i heard Jackie sing it. I've never been able to catch one of Phil's versions. Recordings will have to do, i guess.
King Bee encore .. Jackie singing that, too
Kign Bee! No shit!
Jesus christ my head is going to explode before the weekend is done!
Aoxomoxoa for the 1st set, no special guests
Live Dead for the 2nd set, with Mark Karan on lead guitar
I'll give the 1st set a 7. It could easily have been an 8, maybe even an 8.5 if they'd only turned up the volume. As it was, from where I stood near the back of the orchestra pit (40 feet back from dead center), the beginning of Rosemary and most of Baby was nearly drowned out by the crowd murmur. It was muddy and maddening.
Other than that (significant) problem, however, the set was nicely rendered by the band. Except where noted, the songs were played w/o any long breaks or jams, so it went by quick.
St. Stephen - vox by Phil
Dupree's - vox by Jackie
Rosemary - vox by Teresa Williams from the side balcony
Rag - vox by Molitz
Mtns - vox by Phil and w/ a nice jam in the middle
Jam
Chinacat - vox by Jackie and w/ a nice call and response jam between Larry and Jackie
Baby - vox by Phil and Teresa, alternating verses
Cosmic - vox by band
As for the 2nd set, from the very first notes out of Karan's guitar, I could tell this set was going to be much louder and very electric. I have to give the first half of the set an 11 and the second half a 10. The Dark Star was sick, long and varied, and wild, with segments that boogied and stomped alternating with trickly space segments. They went out into space and back into dance mode so many times that I began to wonder if they were going to skip the second Stephen and go straight into The Eleven. The Dark Star felt like it must have been 40 minutes long! What followed was one of the most thunderous, monstrous, pounding Stephens I have ever heard. Zoiks!
Dark Star, v1-> - vox by Phil
Skipping on the Atmosphere Jam-> (my title - in and out of space, get it?)
Dark Star, v2-> - vox by Phil
St. Stephen - vox by Karan (and holy shit was this hugely different than the first set version)
Jam->
The Eleven - vox by Molitz
Lovelight - vox by Karan
Death Don't - vox by Jackie
Feedback
Goodnite - vox by band
enc: King Bee - vox by Jackie
How bout donor rap? The lights were on when I left but the crowd was cheering...didn't even occur to me they hadn't done the donor rap when I high tailed it.
That's cool that Karan got to sing. He's a pretty good singer.
I assume there was a donor rap, but I was taking a break in the lobby and didn't hear one. Some of the losers working at the venue were telling folks the show was over before the band came back for the encore. A lot of folks left early w/o getting their special poster (a different one very night this run).
The lights went on before the encore for a minute. I think the crowd was digesting but the boys were still waiting in the wings and someone (Molitz?) motioned for some more love. We gave it, they got it, the lights went back down and then the Encore was Donor Rap, King Bee.
Deacon Bruce - great review!
I will be uploading some pix shortly, including tonite's poster - {with Uncle Bobo in the clouds}
tomorrow the off-nite - it will seem like a relaxing hot tuna show at GAMH ! Never!
( probaly get 2 'death don't have no mercys' and 'sittin on top of the worlds' in these six nights with Tuna in the mix on off nite)
we'll invite jack+jorma for saturday Phil ;-}
more in a bit ...another newcastle first
THANK you R Levy for swapping me.
Ashley has your poster!~
John JB 420
Sorry folks but this show had it's novelty Set I of Aoxoxoma and I only stayed past the set break just to see if Workingmans Dead was the 2nd set but instead we were treated with a Phake cover of a classic Live Grateful Dead 2 LP Set Record including 2 Phreaking St. Stephens of which the 2nd was definitely better.
So I find myself on the floor at the Warfield listenig to new interpretations of a live 2 LP Set...is it Live is it Dead is it Phil what the frick are they trying too hard or am I thinking too much about it?
Good effort anyway so happy trails Phil but this was just a little too cute even for your weirdness.
I have been so pro P&F with this band incarnation to so many of my friends that tonights show was just a letdown and perhaps I just didn't have the right drugs to pretend it was 1969 again on a Wednesday night in SF.
A little warning would have gone a long way for set and setting planning Phil so we all could have dosed in unison.
Cheers.
2nd set wasn't a letdown
iirc, there was a slight TOO tease in dark star
sound slike you packed your samsonites steveO... been there myself. we all have.
I definitely think we're all thinking too much about it; I don't think Phil is trying to "re-interpret" anything, I think he's just having fun.
That was one longass, trippy, varied, twisting, BIZARRE Dark Star, and was about 45 minutes long to my hazy recollections.
The whole show was really fun again, and a tough nut for the band as those two particular sets of songs are about as strange as anyone could try to play in order; but they did it well, considering how dark and odd most of those "songs" are.
What's Become Of The Baby was just plain WEIRD, and it was great to see Phil doing a bit of either A) acting, or B) channeling the psychedelic mind he was in when they wrote that piece of brain twist as he gazed into the the haze while the excellent woman vocalist sang down from the heavens.
Those little theatrics and the whole show was again something really different from the norm. It was another really good show and a REALLY fun night; I'm just glad I was there.
Now everyone is thinking about what will happen next, and I love that Phil has so easily pranked all of us by simply setting a clear pattern into the run. Now EVERYONE is pontificating about WHAT WILL THEY DO NEXT??? "Now they HAVE to do this; No, they're definitely going to do THAT; Now we KNOW they're going to this; NO, we don't KNOW, they may just do THAT; Oh, they SHOULDN'T do that, they SHOULD do THIS, because I hate it when they do THAT!" Classic Grateful Dead..... setting and then confounding expectations, and laughing all the way.
I do have to say that while I really find myself enjoying Jackie and what he brings (he was doing some really cool, trippy slide stuff during MOTM I believe, when Larry was on the big mandolin thing) but Death Don't Have No Mercy is a dark, heavy, mournful song of deep despair, and Jackie just didn't sell it to me at all. I just don't hear weary despair in his very youthful voice. I honestly would have rather Phil sang it (and I'm not a big Phil vocal fan) because he knows a thing or two about Death and Mercy. And little Jackie ain't no King Bee either, no matter what he said to his baby tonight; the one song that felt like a throw-away so far.
I'm really looking forward to Friday. I'm really enjoying this run so far, and I'm going to continue to just kick back, close my eyes and listen to the music play, and try not to think about it all too much.
ATTA' BOY, PHIL!!!
BTW, the heat wave is officially IN. It was H O T in the building tonight, and it's going to get hotter and stuffier for the weekend, so be prepared, especially if you have upper balcony seats.
THE HEAT IS ON!!
there ya go lance
Someone's asking if there was a donor rap in the setlist tonight? Does it freaking matter if Phil made his usual plea? (Note: I applaud him for doing this.) Why anyone even puts that in setlists is completely ridiculous.
yeah it matters since it is a vow he has made... i'd raise an eyebrow if there was no rap... wouldn't be an accident, that's for sure. so worth askin, imo
yes it freakin matters friend.
nothing else ....does
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASuxILEGCyA
was there a feedback bomb at the begining of the Live Dead Stephen
I only ask due to the fact that particalr moment of cross current intensity reminds me of some of the best late night partying moments there could ever be...T it up and boooom
a tribute for the ages
another sick idea from the maestro!!!!
>>>Well, the actual lyrics are "Anne Marie". This is how Robert Hunter wrote it on paper. It's not something that's up for debate. I'm not one to think in black and white terms, but this is an instance where the answer is definitive and very much black and white.
Robert Hunter, preface to Box of Rain:
"My versions of these songs are no more 'the real ones' than those that may have spoken to some of you through the music darkly twenty years ago. I hope that seeing the intended words will provide you with an interesting, if not always convincing variant on the words some of you _actually_ heard.
Damn I can't wait for Sunday night...
The show was vast, smoking, and trippy. The issue of predictability was put to bed tonight, because it made no difference that we all knew the setlist before-hand; the music was crisp and full of passion and surprise.
The Aoxomoxoa set was big, almost second set like. The St. Stephen opener was strong, and the show was off to a flying start. Molo was pounding it hard. The centerpiece of the first set was Mountains of the Moon > China Cat, with Larry in full control. The MotM jam was scintillating, with great pace-changes thrown in. Despite knowing that ChinaCat was next, I found the jam to be interesting and exciting. The Cat purred and growled and played with its prey, sometimes lazy and languid, sometimes scary quick.
The Dark Star was enormous; I think it clocked in at over 40 minutes. Extremely psychedelic, with no less then seven distinct movements. Mark Karan has some beautiful tone. Does he play like this for Ratdog? He led the band through a lengthy not-quite Sugar Magnolia jam which ended up quivering in pieces on the Warfield floor. A spacey segment followed, eventually leading into a Throwing Stones jam that saw Jackie offering some blistering commentary (do you understand me?). Molitz stepped up, reminding us that Dark Star is about space, deep dark vast. Somehow Larry missed the cue after the second nightfall of diamonds, and the band was forced to demonstrate what a major league save sounds like. Mission Accomplished!
The Second St. Stephen was better than the first, and was truly welcome. I recall a grateful dead show that opened with a full version of Saturday Night, and closed with same song, and yet the two versions were not the same at all: the first was solid and resembled a recital, the second was freewheeling and loose. The same was true of tonights Stephen's. The first version was as good and opener as one good ask for, a rocking intro to the night, the second one had a drippy psychedelia appropriate for the second set. Same lyrics, different song.
Jackie started the Lovelight, but handed the ball of to Mark, and man did he ever run with it. Jammy jam jam, with a tip of the cap rap to Pigpen which brought a heartful response from the audience.
Jackie took over for a soulful Death Don't Have no Mercy. I have seen Jackie Green play with Phil about a half dozen times, and I have watched as he has grown. He leads the band with confidence, and he plays his leads consumately. After a while he left the stage to grab his acoustic while the rest of the band delivered some feedback. He returned to gently ease the band into We Bid You Good Night. Jackie also had the honors on the King Bee encore.
I flew out from Delaware to see this show, and its the only one I will catch of this run, but I can say absolutely and without equivocation that this show was THE SHOW THAT I CAME TO SEE. My expectations were blown away.
See you guys in Philly next month. Be safe.
Yeah, what a difference 24 hours makes. I love Mark Karan, he looked great, he sounded great, I was very happy to see him! Lovelight and 2 St. Stephens! ha!
I could have done without the theatrics of the Baby, sorta reminded me of the Codetalkers all bass player and his trance schtick. But I'm sure there's plenty of people who will say they had out of body experiences and they saw god and they weren't even on drugs.
I do hope we get to see more of Teresa though. I'd like to see her singing (on the stage) in a more 'typical' sort of appearance.
>>close my eyes and listen to the music play, and try not to think about it all too much.<<
good words to remember...
>>Does he play like this for Ratdog? <<
nope...
>> I flew out from Delaware to see this show, and its the only one I will catch of this run, but I can say absolutely and without equivocation that this show was THE SHOW THAT I CAME TO SEE. My expectations were blown away.
Congrats! I know that feeling!
Nice review Steve.
Looks mighty fine!
This show smoked right from the opening notes. The mood and vibe at the theater was a lot mellower than the evening before due to everyone being kinda exhausted. How could anyone complain when you get two St. Stephen's in the same show? Teresa Williams' vocals were simply astonishing although I'm not sure anyone on the lower level floor could see her ~ I could only see the top of her head. But hear her we did and Phil should use her more often. I ran into Henry Kaiser in the crowd and he was amazed with how good they did Rosemary and What's Become of the Baby? which sounded very opratic with Phil on the stage singing to Miss Williams who was up in the stage right Lincoln booth. When you read a setlist very often it doesn't reflect on the performance but in this case it surpased all expectations. By the time Mark Karen came out for the Live Dead set the sparks were just flying off the guitars.
Where are the soundboard downloads??????????????
Patience, Nick.
Usually takes a couple of weeks to get them up. . .
Nice Henry Kaiser sighting too btw.
Here are some hallway pictures and the Wednesday poster.

Smoking Show To me this is like an opera of the Grateful Dead I love it and can't wait for more .Hot Tuna Electric tonight
>>Someone's asking if there was a donor rap in the setlist tonight? Does it freaking matter if Phil made his usual plea?<<
I asked about the donor rap and it does matter, when the lights came up I headed for the door. If I had stopped to think about it, I would have realized there was an encore on the way because we hadn't heard a donor rap. But that was an after thought and I missed the encore, although, they had started handing out posters, I didn't see anyone leave without one.
Maybe I just missed them on Tuesday but it seemed like there were way more wooks outside on Wednesday. Lots of fingers in the air.
has there been a different "giveaway" poster each night?
or just one for the run?
very cool thing happening here.
bummed to have missed these shows, but anticipation for saturday/sunday has been built beyond belief.
Different poster each night, when you put the full set in order it will line up to match the ceiling of the theatre.
>>there were way more wooks outside on Wednesday. Lots of fingers in the air.>>
Wait til the weekend. . .
Actually, I predicted this yesterday in other stuff:
By North Beach (Northbeach) (66.92.223.162) on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 - 01:49 pm: Edit Post
prediction for 5/14
Aoxomoxoa - 1st set
Live Dead - 2nd set
St. Stephen twice!
FYI -- last two days have blown my mind!!!!!
For those of you who aren't aware, there's a thing going on the last couple of years where artists perform classic albums live in their entirety. The DON'T LOOK BACK concert series seems to be driving most of this:
http://www.dontlookbackconcerts.com/
I saw Sonic Youth do their masterpiece DAYDREAM NATION from start to end last year in Chicago and it was most excellent.
I suspect that someone hipped Phil to this and he's doing his own version of the concept, which I personally think is cool as hell.
I'm utterly amazed how few reviews there are on these 2 shows compared to the amount of bandwidth expended... Such a shame really for those of us stuck out here... So, many thanks to those of you who actually *are* posting reviews.
I noticed more wooks too. They should be swarming by tomorrow night.
Stealth Show Tonite.....
Vintage Dead > Historic Dead
I didn't believe that Phil was gonna do all the albums, I thought it maybe a one off thing and the rest of the shows would be "regular".
Well the first notes of St.Stephan made me a believer and I knew we'd be in for a another treat. AND what a treat it was, great show!!
Everything was played very well, The Highlights for me were the incredible Dark Star, it really was a thing of beauty long and dark in just the right places. I also really enjoyed the 2nd St. Stephan, Duprees, Mts Of The Moon, Whats Become of Baby, Rosemary and Death Don't Have>Feedback. There was a big end jam on the Chinacat that was very nice.
Unlike the night before I didn't hear anything I'd consider a clunker. It's so cool to know the order of the tunes(if I can remember them in the moment) and still be surprized by the playing, the titles maybe the same but the playing is all new.
I can't wait for the next three nights I hope the premise holds, the terrapin should be massive, see ya there!!
Nice review Canyon!
I'm listening to last night right now and I can't believe I missed it!
I have to get some sleep because my flight is EARLY, but I have a feeling I'll be up all night listening to the last 2 nights recordings!!
I'm giddy with anticipation!!!
Tuesday night, after a great show, i was thinking - two points make a line. Phil is going to play AX and Live/Dead. I was just sure of it. To start out Workingman's Dead after AX is nuts - it's a totally different direction for GD - wouldn't fit. Wouldn't be a cohesive show, which this one oh my god was. Out of this world. And the 60's fit well into two nights...
First SS was kinda overwhelmed by how cool it felt knowing the ride we were in for. Song was good enough to make me really look forward to what was coming next.
Wasn't Jackie on acoustic for SS, and maybe more of the first set??? That's what I remember - and it lent the music a really nice feel, and helped make the distinction between this one electric/one acoustic version vs. the later three electric version...
It's such a novelty to know what they were going to play. Glad I couldn't remember the order - a little microsurprise with each song, each a gem...
Dupree's! Perfect? How could it be perfect? Well, I liked it. A lot. I like how Jackie sings, and he nailed it. A bit of carnival sound made merriment of poor dupree...
Then Rosemary - wow. otherworldly. This took us to another plane, and one I don't recall the GD going. This is when the whole thing took on a religious tone to me - after the blasphemy of Dupree's, this odd gem, performed with haunting beauty. Yep, liked that one, too.
Rag. Another great one. I'm glad Molitz sings it - no complaints.
MoTM - absolute favorite of mine. gorgeously done. This is when I picked up on the religious tone again. That buzouki or whatever it is larry plays was great. This was heavy psychedelic rock played with restraint, respect and reverence. Peak experience.
One moment stuck with me, not sure when. i look up and there's larry with the buzouki and his wife is singing, and I can see that he's stealing glances at her on the balcony, full of pride, but doesn't want to stare at her - but he can't help but steal glances. Gorgeous. Pretty hard to blame him. She sounds so nice..
Another great moment - I'm watching phil and he gives larry a pointed look. larry saw it, and instantly launched into a scorching lead that took the energy way up. Got to catch the master at work - such excellent ensemble playing. wow.
Another thought throughout all two nights - fuck, these people have been rehearsing. Hard. This was tight, beyond what I thought might be reasonable to expect from this band. Inspired.
Albert Hoffman - the spirit lives on...
China Cat. Check. Only remember liking it. A lot.
What's become - all I recall was carefully-crafted and executed weirdness that worked well.
Cosmic Charley. like the other CC above..
end o' set. Fun talking to many folks during break.
Set two. So, is it UJB, or Dark Star? And how well can those two be teased?? Took me a good while to get convinced that Phil wasn't going to prank some of us...
Then off they go. Others have described this DS well elsewhere. Unless electrified, the ups and downs are too long and wide for me - wander song - enjoy the fast parts, which were fantastic.
Then #2 SS, and we were off. Dancin' fools. Fun to experience phil bombs one the stage left stacks - especially with earplugs - flowing bodies all around for the rest of the nite.
The eleven blew me away - excellent. Then Lovelight turned awesome.
I like Death Don't, and I thought Jackie did it real justice - others appear less impressed, but i really dug it. Again, a gem.
The feedback. Gawd. Right at the end of song I figured to go plaster myself against the speaker cabinet - I had 30 seconds of outrageous sound massage - I'd do that again...
We bid - then the King Bee - novel, fun, well-played as far as I'm concerned...
Wow. Ideal show for me - one I've been looking to experience for nearly 40 years.
Thanks Phil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yanno... I don't know what I can add to what's been said already. I *really* like the current lineup; they're finding lots of new stuff in all of these songs.
But after the past three nights, GOOD GOD, just what we in for in the next three?
I'm trying not to think about it too much, 'cause I get a bit too hyped if I do.
WOW this is great......there is fire on the mtn in SF.....JERRY says all I have left to do is SMILE SMILE SMILE.....THIS RUN IS FOR YOU....SEE YA TOMORROW ON MARKET
nice one muffy!
>>>>>>But after the past three nights, GOOD GOD, just what we in for in the next three?<<<<
I know it seems like the past three nights to me too!!
Thanks for all the reviews so i can remember what I heard!
Europe '72'd be awesome....
Let's really freak with them....
First Set....Free Your Mind
Second Set....Maggot Brain
Encore....."cosmic slop"
"Then Rosemary - wow. otherworldly. This took us to another plane, and one I don't recall the GD going. This is when the whole thing took on a religious tone to me - after the blasphemy of Dupree's, this odd gem, performed with haunting beauty. Yep, liked that one, too."
haha nice!
you know a review is really really spirited when a "blasphemy" is thrown in there
I liked the part when the lady in white was singing from the side balcony with phil. kind of reminded me of the dead can dance show I saw a few years ago. steve molitz singing doin' that rag worked out great. dark star had some nice moments. king bee rocked. It's always nice to see something you have never seen before and this album theme is special.
The Dark Star > St. Stephen > 11 was pretty epic
Not sure what other triumvirate during the run will top this, but then again………
I give the 1st set a very solid 9/10 with mountains and china cat at the top
Aoxomoxoa live – yeah baby.
Some folks were pretty adamant at set break that we were going to get workingman’s, but after the jam went to dark star and not UJB, "live dead" was launched.
Hot as a pistol.
Thanks for these reviews. One thing strikes me hard...this run may be an example one of the 'ultimate differences' between GD shows seen live or heard on tape.
That is, we've been at great shows that made the transition to tape well, which then helped evoke being at them. And shows we've loved on tapes that we were not at.
But one of the hardest things to remember, especially given that we play tapes over and over, is that feeling of 'wowness', minor or major, that comes from that first experience on the night, specifically, that this or that song was then followed by X or Y, juxtaposed with, whether segued or not. It is so easy to lose touch with that. But in fact this is key to the whole GD experience [as well for some other artists] - this building of juxtapositions.
Which is why I am finding these setlists so mindblowing. Most of these songs were never played next to each other live anyway ! Some almost never played anyway, let alone in a 'suite' !
Just trying to imagine what the FUCK the Aoxomoxoa would feel like, having *those* strange songs unfolded in *that* order...I mean, jeez, they followed the album order - so fucking what...! They still had to try and make each one work in relation to the other.
This all adds up to more 'First time ever juxtaposed songs' than in the entire history of the GD !
And as for the Live Dead - well double joke for a start to play material they already cover live, and where an actual GD setlist exists [but think Bethel...!]
But to be able to experience how it feels to juxtapose them ALL in one set...that's also an overdose of 'first times'.
I can barely imagine how it felt to witness Feedback next to We Bid, for example !
To be honest, if they devoted a tour to just this concept, I would be in full support. (In fact, I would take these 2nites over anything they might do in the next 3, but thats my preferred era of the GD)
Of course they won't do that, but the point is, in their having to constantly reinterpret and hone such setlists in rotation each night, things would just get better.
They wouldnt be anywhere near the *wowness* of these first 2 nights. But then you only get one first time in life, so.... [shrugs]
And these songs and setlists couldnt get much classier for me. I'd tour to see them try Whats Become of the Baby and Rosemary etc etc etc several times over. In fact I'd prefer that to anything I saw last Fall, good as it was.
-------------------------------------------------
But really I'm just screaming silently at the fact that nobody - including Phil - seems to be filming
them !!!
gotta mention how good Karan was - or - better said - how damn good all those guitars sounded - Larry and Jackie are fun together (witness the tradeoff jam on Tuesday), but it's like there's something between them that's missing? At least for dripping psychedelia?
Karan filled the gap, and we rocked.
Bobby did something similarly wonderful the night before.
people were yammering about lack of "lead" guitarist. At that moment I realized that I'm kinda tired of lead guitar - rather have a swirling ensemble mass of sound, at least when it's done well. Which is what we've been gittin'...
otherwise known as it take two GOOD guitarist to do something approximating what JerWeir did...
They need to turn Campbell UP in the mix. In Denver, not only was Phil directing the band, but every other song, he was signaling to the folks on the controls when to turn Campbell up and down. I kept thinking, "Doesn't this crew know the music?" It's obvious most of the time. A good example was when Campbell was FAR too low in the strumming parts of Franklin's Tower. You could barely hear him, and Phil is emphatically motioning "UP! UP!" while he quickly points to Campbell and motions strumming. I like his playing...when I can hear him. I'd love to hear what Healy could do with Phil's band.
I was pretty burnt after the first night, but I thought tonight was better. Liked second set better than first, but the dancers from the night before and Teresa Williams singing tonight made things interesting and gives the show a nice variety, which I love! Mark Karan was great, and his guitar playing really fit the music being played in the second set. Just think in 1969 they used to play the Live Dead sequence almost every night! Never in my life did I think I would see the Live Dead sequence played, but we got it Wednesday night! Granted it wasn't the Grateful Dead with Jerry Garcia, but it was the next closest thing! Larry and Jackie were just shredding, and are playing together with each other better than I have ever seen! Thanks for putting this great band together Phil, and for continuing to carry The Grateful Dead torch, YOU DO IT WELL!!!!!! I am lucky I have been off work on disability after having hip surgery, and I am able to go to all five shows! I always read about people doing it on the east coast when they play say The Nokia Theater, and now I am getting to do it at my favorite venue in the whole world, The Warfield in SF! Can't wait for Friday, should be taking Thursday off, but can't miss electric Hot Tuna! Love BruceEdwardWeber(eddieboy)!!!!!!!!
bump cause this show is flawless all around
