Sunshine Kesey, the daughter of Ken Kesey and Mountain Girl. She was still quite young when MG and Jerry hooked up, and was raised with Trixie and Annabelle, the two gals MG and Jerry brought into the world together.

Jambands recanted the part about her being MG daughter and that was probably the source for the Examiner.

Wait I am wrong! according to Wiki and Ken Keasy bio.....Kesey had another child, Sunshine, in 1966 with fellow Merry Prankster Carolyn Adams.[5]

But her myspace says she was born in 72? I believeWiki. So MG's daughter with Keasy

Sunshine Kesey & Sunshine Garcia Becker are separate individuals.

Born on the west coast in the 1960s, Sunshine Kesey was raised in a very artistic and experimental environment. She was always encouraged to make art by her mother Carolyn and her step-father Jerry Garcia. Following the footsteps of her father Ken Kesey, Sunshine went to the University of Oregon, where she studied art and creative writing.... from: http://www.eugeneglassschool.org/InstructorBios/s_ kesey.cfm

Furthur indeed!
The party just keeps getting better and better.

More than forty years ago, we waited impatiently for months for the first album to find its way from the Bay Area before it was available in record stores on the east coast.

And tonight, we were able to gather together from all points of the globe to join together in a unique and almost real time celebration welcoming in the New Year, 2010.

With special thanks to all those whose generous dedication has made it possible – and for each one who added their own special contribution along the way to this marvelous journey.

Thank you one and all.

Another thing which is great is how JK doesn't just seem like a hired hand. He seems like a lead guitarist in every sense of the word. I.e. many times last night i noticed it was HIM leading the band, gesturing to the drummers and basicaly calling the shots with where the energy/volume should go. Don't get me wrong, phil and bobby did their share of swirling their arm in the air and calling everyone's attention to break out into a new jam/song, but was great to see JK getting to do the same.
this is a BAND. this isn't the dead with whichever cool guitar player is free at the moment. This is a group that one gets wants to really do something and go somewhere. And its GREAT to see phil and bobby laughing and patting each other on the back again.
and one other thing about JK. Obviously it is a big difference having a guitarist who has spent the past several years constantly playing/rehearsing the same song catalog that phil and bobby have been doing their whole lives. i get the sense that when JK is playing he is bringing in ideas that he's perfected and experimented with over the years. these songs are in his blood as much as anyones. if ever there was a guy with more passion for this music outside of the GD immediate family it's this guy. and I think it helps tremendously!

happy new year! cannot wait for radio city and boulder! and spring/summer?!?!

I have been going to New Years shows since 1985-86 Oakland Coliseum, and this was my favorite of all time. There was a unity of fans and band last night, a unique on the same plane mode of thinking, and the band delivered big time! Thanks for the wonderful midnight celebration,I was front row wheel chair ramp dead center, and the gal on the skul was literally 20 feet in front of me! Got some great pictures,go see this band! Got tickets to 1/4,5,9,10,11,12 rehearseles, see you all there, thanks Canyon, love BruceEdwardWeber!

So... what a mixed experience. It was at once wonderful and terrible. Please allow me to explain...

During shakedown (the first song), I immediately knew that the band was ready to throw down some serious music. It was sublime, it was stupendous, it was inspired, it was graced with beautiful guitar tone... it would have ben all I could have wanted from the music... except that Jay Lane insisted on playing a tambourine through the entire song and jam. It just did not fit, and acted as a block to being fully immersed in the wonder that was this jam.

Now here is the sad part... he played that damn tambourine throughout every song and every jam through the whole fucking show. Someone seriously needs to take the tambourine away from him. As a matter of fact, I think he does not belong on that stage at all. As far as i could tell, he added nothing to the music. He literally had two tambourines in his hands that he was using to hit cymbals with for most of the show. As a musician, I can tell you that this is not the kind of thing a musician recovers from. Being clueless on that level is a sign of insanity. He clearly was not connecting his body movements to the sounds he was producing, and also not assessing how those sounds fit in with the overall musical movement.

Russo was also problematic for a lot of the show, but his were in ways that I could see improving. He needs to project more low end register percussion. There was way too much reliance on the metaly drum sounds. That combined with the tambourine insanity from Jay Lane made for a challenging night on the percussion front. Aside from tonal issues, Russo often had issues with finding a comfortable tempo and rhythmic feel for a lot of the songs and jams.

Now... that being said, some very fine music still managed to happen.

The first set featured inspired work in many songs. John absolutely played beautifully on shakedown, Jack straw, candy man, and Viola. Now that viola was something special. Hands down the best viola I have ever heard. They made especially good use of the fifth dimension during Viola.

The real good news about this band is that Phil, Bob, John K., and, and Jeff are poised to make absolutely sublime music together. jeff falls of the rails sometimes, but I have confidence he will just get better and better. Those four with Mickey and Billy or Molo would be fucking amazing. I suspect that we will be seeing this happen after the winter tour. I do not think the current drummers will suffice, and it seems obvious that the potential with the rest of the band is great... that potential needs to be fulfilled.

Set two started real strong. Help>Slip was amazing. Franklins is where the real problems began. The band just could not get in sync for Franklins. The drummers and Jeff did not seem to know how to support the song (though I think that Jeff was just being thrown by the drummers). From this point forward, the rest of the band. seemed to become more resigned to the fact that this night would have it's potential held back by the drummers. Earlier in the show it seemed like they were able to overcome the shortcomings of the rhythm section by sheer force of will and determination. As a musician, i can tell you haw fatiguing it is to play with people who are constantly missing the obvious (ie... that you do not play a tambourine constantly).

Cassidy felt pushed tempo wise, though John managed to get some nice leads in any way. The wheel was a travesty. Dark star was limited by the percussionists not listening to the rest of the band. It ended up sounding like a typical post Jerry dark star... long and rambling, and uninspired. I have seen John K play so much better Dark Star's than that one.... there is only so much you can do if your drummers are insane though.

The Pink Floyd part was actually pretty good, though again it was due to sheer force of will and concentration on the part of the nondrummers.

The rest of the show was much the same. Some nice moments during after midnight and let it grow (again, no thanks to the drummers).

So many roads was beautiful. It just so happened that the tambourine worked in this song... a happy coincidence.

The jam in sugar mags was fun too.

So... yes... it was wonderful and terrible. I am very excited to see the positive aspects of what happened last night find fruition. I feel confident that Phil and Bob are determined to see that happen.

One other note... the guitar tone of john k is unbelievably good. He really has something special going on with his sound. The playing is amazing too.

Phil and Bob are both at the top of their game. They sound amazing.

Also of note... the dark star did not feature the whole 'nightfall of diamonds' thing. I was pleasantly surprised to see that. I never liked it, and the fact that they left it out means they are probably honestly assessing what does and does not work. That bodes well for the music.

No, they did the traditional lyrics. They just left out the whole 'nightfall of diamonds... diamonds... diamonds.. diamonds' part that has been used since Jerry's passing. I never thought that was a good addition.

Great review Gentle Jack. You put into words my thoughts but more clearly and succintly than I could. Any ideas why Billy and Mickey were not included? Would that make it "The Dead" again and bring it to a more unmanageable level? I as well think they should retire Dark Star for the reasons you stated. I thought the Dark Star at the Warfield, when they played Live Dead, was the best post Jerry that I heard.

>>>>Any ideas why Billy and Mickey were not included?

I am not really sure. I have heard many theories, but who knows. I feel in my gut that Phil and Bob are determined to do this right though. I remember two new years eaves ago when Bob and Phil played the mini acoustic set that it seemed like they were announcing a renewed dedication to figuring out how to make great Grateful Dead music again. It seems to be happening.

I think that the most important thing I see happening is that John K. seems to be confronted with the central question... 'what is the point of playing this music?'. I have always liked his playing with DSO, but what seemed to be lacking was the fundamental wisdom that runs as an undercurrent in Grateful Dead music. Aside from playing the notes, the musicians need to have something to say. I can already see great strides in this department with John K. since the Fox run.

I think that was a part of the problem with the percussionists from a couple of nights ago. There did not seem to be any point to their playing. It was sort of like... 'what is the punch line?'. With Mickey Hart's drumming, there always seemed to be a pointer signaling connection back to the earth... a reverence for creation. Billy seems to exude an aura of the importance of fundamental patterning and adaptive stability. Russo and Lane just seem to be flailing.

The comments about the drumming are interesting. It is hard to comment by only listening to downloads however, after listening to the last NJ show I have to agree that the drumming is the weakest link. IMHO it has left a bit of a "hollow" sound and lacks the fullness that was produced even in the spring tour. Would a Molo/Russo combo work? Personally, even Billy by himself would fill the void. I will be more prepared to comment after seeing them live. I would have to say though, the potential here is tremendous.

I've also been listening to the drummers carefully because after so seeing so many Phil shows the Molo-less sound seems very odd to my ear. It seems that Russo is highly proficient in a technical sense, but he's lacking a knowledge of how to make his sound powerful in the music. Imho, the song that illustrates this most clearly is Viola. Percussion is the driving force behind Viola, and this current Furthur band gets nothing out of Viola.

Molo plays as if the role of his sound is to drive the entire band forward; it was impossible for any PLF band to lose momentum or power because Molo simply wouldn't allow it. I've seen only one DNB show, and Molo's approach was obvious to the ear with this band as well.

Russo's contibution blends into the rest of the music. Molo's sound was the FOUNDATION of the music.

This is why Phil called Molo "The Unstoppable Force" and "Mount Molo." I used to use Molo as a pacing guide while I was dancing; I can't do that with Russo.

Russo is a fine drummer - perhaps too fine - but I really, really miss my Molo.

Tapper Rob thanks for the pics....you must have more? Any of all the twirlers backstage?

Gentle Jack good reporting.

Another fun memory of what this is all about....still..."while we can"!

Here's my comment from yesterday:
Just in and here's my assessment. First night was in the groove, on the target, terrific 2nd set.

NYE? Tremendous efforts. Inspirational to see the old guys like me carrying it further. Truly, Weir played his frickin' ass off last night for over 5 hours. Phil is going to prove that if you love what you do and keep working at it it'll keep your life meaningful and vibrant.
My only qualm is that JK needs a bit better equipment to drive tonal differentials in the jams. Too often the jams reached too much same gear. Too much redundancy but that will fade with the regular format 2 set shows. Give Jay Lane his own thrown. He was with so much energy last night it helped keep it driving. Joey must be exhausted today. Same with Jeff.

NYE was a huge effort. They turned it up on the sound third set big time. The visuals were all cool. The dancers were great in and around the stage...having such a grate time...the flower children...a really fun time indeed. The Pink Floyd stuff was intense. Being from JJ's hometown, the After Midnight was a most pleasant surprise. The All You Need love parade to countdown crazy. But for the level of overwhelming smoke NYE, and the over abundant jams it would really hit the chord. Unfortunately, the song list does not include 6 minute rock and roll tunes.

And the third floor had a bunch of kids in the lobby....kinda surreal. In the old days you never saw that element so much.

The sets were poetically justified and laid down to make a point. As the grate Bob Weir said as he left the stage for his NYE final bow, "everyone have a good decade". Dear Phil sent forth his wisdom with "love" as his final message of the evening. Puts it all in perspective. The whole show....Time.

We ain't here long. That's a take.

This show blew the night before out of the water. I was afraid that they might drop the ball after the energetic opening but they didn't. They kept the energy and intensity up ALL NIGHT. It was so much fun to see how much they were enjoying themselves up there. Phil particularly was in good spirits, dropping bombs all over. The one at the start of Viola really took me and some others off guard. I don't know if it was where I was but it just about knowcked me on my ass. It felt like an earthquake.

Dont get me wrong, I had a great time and I do not go to ANY come lately (DEAD) shows with expectations of what was....That being said musically speaking, it just wasn't..I have seen literally 100s of shows over the years and consider myself to be pretty level headed when it comes to the music.. It really lacked any magic moments and the percussion was far from a help as noted above. I honestly left the show thinking it may be time to move along. I will always hold what was close to my heart, but for now, I am moving along.

As I predicted in my review of the very first show this band played in Oakland, many Phil fans would have an issue with the drumming/would miss Molo.

I have seen the band seven times now, and other than not being able to hear them particularly well in SF I am loving the drums in this band and have no real complaints.

It's a different style that's not being handed to us on a HEAVY silver platter, but I love Russo and his very subtle, crafty playing, and I love that he's NOT a heavy handed rock drummer playing lots of really impressive and crowd pleasing fills, but is playing a groovy beat and putting in short, snappy fills, but can also ATTACK the more odd or bizzare places with subtle complexity.

For me Lane is not getting in the way, and is actually playing off Russo pretty well and for the first time ever I'm not having any issue with him (as for the jumping, I just try to look away) and again, I'd rather have too much tambourine than Mickey Mallets slamming himself onto and over every single space, these days showing much more interest in being a rock star than being an augmentive player in an ensemble.

"Molo's sound was the FOUNDATION of the music" is an accurate description of his very good playing, but is also a good description of the minor issue I have always had with him in this music.

For me personally what I have always loved about the Grateful Dead was that at their best they had no "foundation"; they were not connected to the earth at all, but floated above, below, around, and sometimes straight through it, but never ON it.

Molo is a hard-hitting rock drummer and he's really good, but he comes straight at you all the time, and he strikes his drums as hard during Friend Of The Devil as he does on the Other One. Russo has a more spare, swinging style that he can ramp up for the harder songs but that he can bring down for some space and air when that's what is called for, while still providing some great rhythmic color.

Every single show I've seen with Russo I've had a hard time taking my eyes off him, and he's gotten me dancing more with a cool, creative little swipe of the bell on his ride than many of the bombastic fills Molo has thrown my way.

If just Billy was in there I'd be happy with that too, and Billy & Russo would kill IMO, but I'm a bit tired of Molo's hard driving, in-your-face sound, and as much as I love Mickey, and I love him allot, I can not stand watching or listening to anything he does anymore. These days Mickey Mallets is definitely "bowling balls in a dryer".

This is all subjective and I don't think anyone is saying Russo isn't a good player, and I'm certainly not saying Molo isn't, but I'm really happy with the drumming in this band. I like the different approach and lighter touch the very talented new guy brings, and I'm happy with much of what Lane has done, and NOT done; both of them bringing a groovy double drum sound while leaving a little open space (open space, remember that?) which is how I like my GD music.

Fake Lance I think you really nailed it there and I agree with you.

Alot of us are used to a "certain" drum sound and these guys are not that. I was really impressed with the complexity and subtle nature of their playing on Wed. night. It's not typical, straight ahead "rock" drumming and that's pretty cool. It did add a really airy, space feel to the music, especially the longer jams.

As these guys play more and more, I'm sure the strength of the drumming will show. It's not like both of these guys aren't seasoned pros.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Zone Deaf (2hard2handle) on Sunday, January 03, 2010 - 12:02 am: Edit Post

The problem isn't Russo; he's terrific, but still finding his space, one that Molo had a lot of help with the first time he went out there with Billy at his side. After that he had it down and has been as good or better than even the original two. But I won't dicker with the comments on Lane; he uses so many things that are distracting and add nothing most of the time. Maybe he needs more cowbell. So, put another fine skins man in there and you'll have something. I'm really looking forward to February.

Ok a review, not much changed in my opinion of them from the Fox, Phil & Bob sound great, Jeff is solid and I love the drums/percussion combo, although Lane was much more subdued on this night and I did miss the energy he was bringing just a few nights ago in Mill Valley.

I enjoy the singers and I really hope they are in the band now. The Time was fun but Phil had some problems with the tempo and/or lyrics it seemed. I hope it doesn't discourage them from trying new interesting covers.

The BGCA was packed and stayed that way 'til the end, a pretty good feat considering all the other options in town.

>>>>>>but these two guys are playing and keeping a beat. Is it that bad?

My point is that I do not think they are keeping a beat that works for the music much of the time. Believe me when I say that I do not need to the drums to sound like the Grateful dead drums did in order for me to find them acceptable. I would be more than happy to hear a new approach that worked... but it has to work. If the issue was only a creative issue, that would be one thing, but it is a structural issue as well. They were off time or off tempo quite a lot. I thought it was interesting that Lance described the drumming as leaving space, because I found it to bee way too busy. I really wanted to hear the drummers pulling/playing less and listening/responding more.

In any case, I do not think it is fair to get on peoples case for stating an opinion about music on a review thread. I also think it is pompous to presume that people do not like what you like because they can not let go of the past.

Trying to melt with the music with that constant cowbell was like trying to fall asleep when someone keeps flicking your ear.

i wanted a drummer to play less on the 1 & 2, and have greater range in terms of velocity and sensitivity. i find russo/lane more "dead-sounding" than molo who could sound almost hard rock at times (mostly with the Q).

I agree with Skullcap that especially on a review page leveling critiques at WHATEVER you thought of the performance is not a bad thing, as long as you try to back up your opinion with some reasoning, and not just have it be, "THEY SUCK! And if you don't think so YOU SUCK!!".

If you think it sucks fine, but tell me WHY you think it sucks. Isn't that the point of this page in particular?

Clearly Skullcap & I have very different opinions of the drumming so far in this band, but we're not calling each other names or disparaging each other; we're stating our opinions, respectfully IMO, and defending them with some detailed thoughts.

Isn't that what discussion is all about?

Anyway, for better or worse I get to see them again tonight, and if I get to chat with Jay I'll tell him to BACK OFF on the damn tambourine, just for you Joshua!

John Molo made a decision to sign on with Roger McNamee and I heard it was a fantastic deal financially. However, he will no longer play arenas with Phil or any gigs at all with him because he is no longer available to take them.

Molo's choice.

Funny, the posts after the Asbury shows (went Sunday night the 13th) were predominantly, Weir negative these are percussion negative. Personally, I like the rhythm section, and believe it takes more then a dozen or so performances to come to a consensus of sorts. All-in-all the direction is betters then the Herring or Haynes direction (which I do not necessarily have a bad feeling about). Although I concede Bill and Mickey would be the default choice: from my perspective - at the PHILly shows in May - Mickey seemed to rely on electronics more then I would like, Bill was good and still providing the essentials, (I always have enjoy a unique element that Drums provides in the art of a live performance) But, perhaps personally they have desires and dreams that don't correspond with the masses or Bob & Phil or the "corporate machine" or whatever. For that reason alone I'm willing to suspend a final judgment until a more complete body of work can be provided................and that my friends is part of the fun, the unknown & the uncertainty that originally is what this is all about.

There is much more of a jazz approach with Joe, which is a function of the way I feel Phil's approach may lye. If Phil & Bob are willing to experiment together GREAT, WE all win and get a chance to experience IT.

I'll be in AC and hope: the girlz will be there, the Muppet will be bouncin' round the room, Joe will be swinging, Bob will be figuring IT out, Jeff will continue to be the MOST underrated, essential player, John builds and develops his space and PHIL drops some thunder.

I attended this show, and personally thought it was fantastic. the energy during Shakedown, Jack Straw, Viola, and Truckin' was amazing. Uncle John's Band was spectacular, with bobby and john playing beautifully together. Time, So Many Roads, and After Midnight were really great as well as unexpected. I thought the backup singers were a very nice touch as well.

Anybody know where I can get an audience recording? I've looked on Archive.org, but can't find one...I saw a streaming one available on sugarmegs, but I want one I can listen to while I make the long drive back to Utah.

Just getting my head back together from NYE... wow. I thought the show was A-grade stuff, the best NYE show I've heard in MANY years. Just totally well played, great setlist, awesome NYE treats including the Terminator skull... From Shakedown to Sugar Mags, they brought it heavy and never had that "hollow" TD sound... in JK and the drummers, this band has firepower.

Time was the big debut/breakout of the night, and while it had a few warts, it was a great tune and they just about nailed it. Past that, a few vocal flubs, and a slightly "off" 11, this show was mighty. I was pleasantly surprised by the band, who I've never been excited about and whose mini-tour didn't get me jazzed. This show was great though- worth every penny before the 3rd set even started.

I liked Dark Star and its attendant jams most of all... Really had me in another place. Viola was also as tight as they come (almost approaching April 99). Let's keep it coming!

Whoa ... just read the note on Archive.org that Bill Walton jammed on drumz during "Golden Road"??? Sweet!

Any photos?

PZrob, saw that also. Not the first time he's drummed on NYE. Could he have been Father Time as well?

this was a fabulous show from start to finish, any jaded Deadheads who skipped this one because they thought it wouldn't be up to par sure missed the boat (cough cough Hedspace).

The Golden Road opener at midnight was especially triumphant. Thank you Phil & Bobby!

Bill Walton was "Father Time" and on the stage during the countdown and of course during Golden Road, which, if I was hearing right, was the longest Golden Road I've ever heard. It was great to hear something different at midnight for once ! Happy New Year !

doh, I was too far away in the balcony to even recognize Bill (whereas at 12/31/03 I was close and recognized him easily playing drums during Sugar Mag @ midnight.) It was great to hear Golden Road open the new year/decade, specially with 2012 coming up and also flashing back to its same placement at the 12/31/00 Q show...

If that's the longest Golden Road you've heard, I highly recommend the 6-minute version w/ Chris Robinson that ended the 1st set 11/26/05 Chitown and the 5/13/08 Warfield show opener heralding the epic spectacle of that evening and week, 14-minute plus!!!

Ive really like Golden Road since Phil dusted it off for the Q. Gave an almost forgotten tune new life! Party ON!
