Anticipation was in the air in Mill Valley tonight. A small crowd of privileged dead heads gathered in front of the 142 Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley. As the band sound checked these lucky few, who first caught wind of these extended, Furthur “rehearsal,” sessions convened to mull over the recent New Year’s Run. With the passing of the year and decade this has all of a sudden become a uniquely interesting time to witness the continuation and evolution of the Grateful Dead Legacy.
The addition of John Kadlecik has energized most of the Bay Area Deadicated and the evening’s music showcased a lot of bang for the buck with a well played 90+ minutes of music constituting a near perfect gem of a condensed Furthur show.
After a longer than expected delay, the band finally hit the stage around 8:30. The crew tweaked a lot gear and changed written set lists at least three times before the full band finally appeared. Phil stepped up and vaguely explained this was an anything can happen event and to not be surprised if they perform some songs more than once….
Finally this 10 night run of scaled down rehearsal shows was getting going. John Kadlecik kicked things off with the familiar riff to the Memphis Jug Band classic, “On the Road Again,” a relatively rare song from the deepest part of the Dead’s Cover tune catalog, rare here mostly cause it’s not often played in an electric setting. With Furthur it seems anything is fair game.
Kadlecik provided tasty licks throughout as Weir used hand signals to guide the band through the arranged IV-V & I parts of the song. John stepped up next with a very fat rendering of Stagger Lee that was aided greatly by Zoe and Sunshine on backing vocals. Weir did his best slide work of the night here and this was a very well played gem of a tune that sparkled.
JK then donned his own slide and Weir reached way back for the Slim Harpo classic, “I’m a King Bee,” a tune covered by the Dead in the late 60’s and a bit by Phil & Friends with Joan Osbourne (as Queen Bee). There wasn’t much special about this particular rendition other than that it is a relative rarity of the catalog and was fresh to many ears.
Hurricane – the epic Dylan biographic of the legendary New Jersey boxer, who was framed for a murder he didn’t commit wound up with a raging Garcia Band like jam toward the end and was well delivered by John, though he read the lyrics from a music stand and clearly will need a few more spins through it to truly own this ripping number.
Weir stepped up to deliver “Man Smart, Woman Smarter,” and had no trouble getting the room rocking again with this calypso’d Bo Diddleyesque standard. This version rocked and rolled but upon its conclusion seemed to lack the same bang that had come from the previous number.
JK then offered “They Love Each Other,” in a very ’77-’78 Dead Era style that came close to nailing it down accurately and with a lot of the requisite emotional content.
The band pulled a slight alteration in the arrangement of Dylan’s, “Maggie’s Farm,” in terms of how the riff was delivered, but there were a few entertaining lead exchanges between Jeff Chimenti on keys and Kadlecik on guitar that really fattened up the jam. Toward the end of the song Phil let loose with a profound bomb of a bass note that really pounded this one home.
JK really nailed Stella Blue both vocally and instrumentally and towards the tail end of the jam he did a convincing evocation of a high-intensity Garcia-esque crescendo with his chordal fanning on the guitar which really revved up the crowd.
A motivating, “Throwing Stones,” followed complete with a huge Samson like conclusion jam and it seemed as if the show would end on that riff but Weir gently nudged the tempo down and performed “Brokedown Palace.” This was one of Furthur’s occasional miscalculations. Weir has every right to deliver this beautiful and classic song, it would have been more emotionally rewarding to have heard John render vocally it in the Jerry way. For his part, JK really sweetened up Brokedown by playing gorgeous steel guitar derived bent licks and volume swells that helped to soften the blow of Weir’s vocal ramblings.
Brokedown lacked the mmmmph to conclude even a rehearsal show so the band nudged toward a loose "Loser"which regrettably contained significant vocals flubs by JK, but this is what rehearsals are for….isn’t it?
Phil then did the requisite and time honored tradition of reminding the crowd to remind their loved ones that they want to donate their organs in the event of an untimely demise and the show concluded.
For Furthur it’s one down, nine more to go, then a 23 show Winter Tour throughout the US and who knows what will come next?
Personally I thought this mini show rocked hard and satisfied....

great review ~ thanks! concur, that it rocked. i loved hearing the stella blue in that room...seemed well-suited. and i danced hard during throwing stones. gorgeous space to hear music...espesh' THAT music! the next 9 are going to be REALLY fun.
x-posted from another part of the 'zone:
tleo and stella blue were the high points, short show over by 10PM, didn't start until about 8:30.
swear there was a stranger on the original set list about 3rd from the bottom.
loser could have been great....
not exactly sure why robbie was measuring the space between phil's effects rack and the wall while furthur was playing....
im trying to be positive,
but that was 150 dollars?
must be nice to have disposable cash..strippers are cheaper for an hour and a half..
that being said..
FURTHUR rocks musically.
One nice details I neglected to mention in my review - though it's a minor point - but JK snuck in the Sweet Suzie line in the last Loser Chorus which made it kinda cool...

$150? what are you talking about? these shows are $25 each...
my bad theres 150 throckmorton show booked...must have my dates messed up..
as long as its for charity, i guess 150 is cool
Throckmorton is selling (or probably have already sold) tickets for Sunday night at $150 per ticket...

This show flat out rocked and it was just amazing to be in such a small place with this band.
There will be folks who never have a good thing to say about Weir doing Jerry tunes but I thought Brokedown was much better than I was expecting. JK's Stella Blue was off the hook.
I was really blown away with how rocking these guys were and, since all of us were so close to the band, it was quite obvious that they were having a great time.
Very cool review Ted, thanks!
It's a dream come true to see them in such a small place and to be so close - I'll be there every night if I can :-)
Spot on review by Ted...just add that the vibe inside was very mellow....nice small theatre with pretty good acoustics. JK was hanging in the lobby after the show chatting with folks. I saw Jeff outside before the gig as well...so its a good chance you'll run into these guys if you come to a show. One note about tix...the staff is sticking to guns on the no name changes rule. My gf had a signed note and photo copy of the ID from the person who purchased the ticket...no dice, only the person who bought the ticket gets in. I even asked if my gf could go in my place and was denied....she sat outside, not cool.
I bought tickets for each night from the 6th though the 12th and paid only $25 per ticket. I guess the $150 ticket must have been only for last night.
150 dollar ticket is for next Sunday at the Throckmorton if you bought on their site- today as they advertised. Promoted as benefit for their theater- non-tax deductible as mentioned and not
VIP- just the same old ticket for a higher price.
"Not exactly sure why robbie was measuring the space between phil's effects rack and the wall while furthur was playing...."
Probably to stock the rack with some more Bass Bombs. He only has a few in there, that's why he uses them sparingly.
so...after being shut out on every attempt to buy tickets to one of these shows, i randomly hit the calendar page today and voila! lucky me got one for thursday.
questions for those who were there last night: is it standing or seated? easy to move around in the venue or sold to sardine level? full bar?
thanks in advance for any info. i was fortunate enough to catch the 9/19 fox show and both civic shows over new year's. i haven't been this excited about this music post-garcia since 'discovering' DSO a couple of years ago and seeing phil rejuvenated by jackie greene. just goes to show you don't ever know...
finally, i'm a prime lurker, but have been enjoying the riches of this site for years. so a huge thank you to bret and all of the fine folks who contribute so much in terms of information, opinions, optimism and honesty.
hope to see and meet some of you on thursday.
Great review Ted,look forward to more from you.
that WAS totally cute, how JK slid the "sweet suzy" line in on loser...i smiled.
sunday show was super mellow. not sardine tight at all. dunno about full bar...def beer...by thurs it all may be diff anyways. happy you got one!
John,
It's all standing, except for about 8 or 10 folding chairs along the wall, and a couple of benches against the back walls. You'll need to be right in the front of the line to get the chairs, or if you're disabled they'll probably let you in first.
Not packed but full to the back, with more room right at the back exits where those benches are. But this is a SMALL place, so even the back 'ain't bad at all.
Bottled beer & wine. Choices look decent.
wonder and fake lance:
thanks for the info. as long as there's a beer to be had, i'm happy. i'm guessing it's a 'no smoking' venue inside? or are they being accommodating in that way too? ;-)
If you're still checking this, there has been zero issue with smoking. It has been a BLUE CLOUD inside. Billowing clouds of gloriously scented smoke were wafting onto Bob & Phil all last night. They didn't seem to mind at all.
Now if you're smoking cigarettes, well please take that outside.
yes, still reading, and very much talking about the blue cloud. agree on taking the other stuff outside!
Grate show to star the new decade.
