FURTHUR!
Miracle> GetBack > Greatest Story
Get Back? Meh... they should do Dear Prudence. Jerry's version of that is the only Beatles cover by a Grateful Dead-related band that I've liked.
Mason's >

comes a time
Hello Zoners! Long time lurker/reader, my 1st post. Beatles? Come on now... The Q... She Said; Lucy in the Sky. These were huge huge songs during those shows. I can't wait to hear what Furthur will get into this week! Thank You so much everybody over the years for the reviews, comments, set lists and points of views, i've spent more time on this site than I care to admit, it's all been the best!

JK was the star tonight with great ballads.

The Comes a Time was the best of the ballads. Perfectly quiet when it needed to be, great soaring leads at the end from JK. Bobby's subtle chording reminded me of the Richmond 85 version. Superb!!!
Another highlight was the Unbroken Chain. Totally different from the pristine smooth version I saw at Hammerstein. This version rocked hard. John took the final jam to an even higher level. Phil looked psyched! Great to see John taking the lead a bit.
Review of the Furthur Rehearsal Performance

Tonight's Throckmorton (Tuesday, January 5) "rehearsal," was doing its best to act like a bona fide concert despite a shaky, "I Need a Miracle," opener, featuring a giant sized Bob Weir Vocal flub right in the first verse. "I Need a Miracle," was however, an appropriate selection for these difficult to access small club shows.
John Kadlecik picked burning leads and the song morphed toward the different, but still propulsive groove of the Beatle's "Get Back." From my perspective, this tune never really got on the tracks. The disjointedness of this was amplified by the reality that it was delivered in a difficult to sing key. Also, John’s delivery was hampered by his reading of the lyrics from a music stand which didn't help to "sell" the song. It was still fun, but it’s the rare cover of this song that can surpass the original recorded track.
Up next, Weir led the band through a pounding, "Greatest Story Ever Told," with barn burning ferocity. Lesh and JK played off each other with Jeff Chimenti ably following. JK then took on a Ryan Adam's song called, "Magnolia Mountain," which was familiar to just a few in the crowd. John played some gorgeous syrupy, flowing, steel guitar licks to conclude this Hunter-esque composition and really wound the song down beautifully to its conclusion.
"Comes A Time," was easily one of the night's high points, delivered beautifully by JK. John seems to have mastered the art of injecting more than the requisite and appropriate emotional content to this song as both a singer and instrumentalist. Both the singing and the jams were inspirational here.
Then Phil steered the crew through an exploratory and jam-filled "Unbroken Chain," that came close to, but didn't quite surpass the depths of spaciness that occurred during the 12/30/09 Civic show, but this rendition was made more intense by the intimacy of the space in which it was delivered.
Weir followed with "When I Paint My Masterpiece," but this one got off the line with a false start. Phil took the mic to explain that due to this being a rehearsal, the band would take time to allow Weir to change the battery in his guitar (the pink strat). Masterpiece kicked into gear again and managed to reach requisite excitement levels and featured Weir and Kadlecik duetting on vocals with JK handling the Garcia harmony parts with a notable lack of vocal participation by Zoe and Sunshine.
The JGB nugget "Reuben & Cherise," was a great departure from more typical GD material and was terrifically rendered to the great pleasure of the audience.
The final song was oddly reconstructionist in nature. "Ship of Fools," was pitched as a shuffle rather than the classic, slow, almost Sinatra like ballad of old and this took a bit of getting used to, but ultimately had the room swaying happily to this altered gem.
With the final notes of "Ship of Fools," Weir fled the stage; Lesh pontificated on organ donation and for a few brief moments things were left in limbo. Much to the crowd's delight, the band returned and kicked into "Turn On Your Lovelight," with its familiar and infectious groove.
This song was also somewhat rearranged as it remained a mellow lilt for longer than normal length of timeuntil the band's intensity grew to the point where JK and Phil just unleashed energy as in the old days. This was a powerful encore that left the house in a state of pleasant, but bewildered awe.
From my perspective, this was one fine Tuesday night in the Bay Area experience and showcased one of the best set lists in this extended rehearsal run of stealth performances thus far.
It smoked both on paper and in person....

Reviewer’s note:
I have been fairly unlucky with obtaining tix for any other nights so I won't be able to continue to post my post-show thoughts...
If anyone can assist be emailing me if more are released I'd be more than grateful....
Otherwise - get your ass down to Mill Valley and go Furthur.... They are definitely a band I’ve come to believe in.

We were honored to have Ruby ride the rail tonight right in front of Bobby.
Nice to see the Ryan Adams tune Magnolia Mountain back and John’s vocals were heartfelt, yet then – Comes A Time, by far the highlight of the night. It was almost shocking how quiet the theater got when he started to sing. Early in the song, Phil was looking up with his eyes closed and just playing quietly and it was like you knew exactly what he was thinking. John’s face was so expressive as he was singing this song, I have never seen him look that animated before, it was deeply moving. After this whole 12 night extravaganza is complete, folks will be talking about this Comes A Time! They really took off from there. Bobby nailed the Masterpiece, sung the heck out of it, changing it up some, sweating, spitting, it was awesome! Reuben & Cherise was outrageous with a nice long jam after. After the Ship of Fools, Phil comes to the mic and says, “well that is all we had planned tonight, but we will stick around and see if we can come up with one more…” Classic… Once again more than anything, sharing this experience with a large amount of really special people makes it so much better.
After the show, a bunch of folks frolicked on down to the corner Italian Restaurant “Vasco’s” who stayed open late and gave all the Furthur folk 20% off. Great food and lots of Zoners. It was quite the after party…
I am so excited they are adding Jerry Band material to the setlist. It takes you Furthur indeed. Hope to see them very soon.
Psyched to see Magnolia Mountain in the setlist and equally excited to hear John take a crack at it. This actually looks like one of the more appealing/interesting Furthur shows to date in terms of song selection. I don't know if they're selling SBDs of these rehearsal gigs or if they're even allowing taping, but I hope something emerges at some point.
No taping allowed and so far nothing released, but it would be great to hear much of this again.
last night was awesome!
100000 times better, tighter more fun then 19th and broadway or the last 2 nights, better then anything at the ofx in oakland.
i've seen this line-up 7 times now (oakland, fairfax, last 3 mill valley) this was easily the best most smokin' eockin, cleanest most fun show of these guys i have seen.
if they were all like this....wow, that would be ridiculous.
Great reviews everyone. Good luck on scoring more tickets to the up coming shows
goodlooking set list
I love how you get soundchecks, mini donor raps, and encores at "rehearsals..." Life is good!

Nice. Where's the Comes A Time video?
Thanks all above. Great vids. Hard being locked out of MV when I live right here. How are you all getting in???????
TKS for the reviews.
Drea, put this link on your computer where it's easily accessable and check it every five damn minutes. When there's a red "purchace tickets" icon under the Ticket Information icon HIT IT and have your CC info ready. If you get bumped KEEP hitting it until the red icon is gone.

They release a few at all times of the day, and last night during the show. I missed out by about five minutes last night but kept checking back and about an hour later tix for tonight were up for about three minutes. I got one of those, so you gotta' keep trying and believe in luck!
Those Flip vids are great. Ted do you have the HD one? I got one myself from my sister so I might have to bring it out on tour in February
Thank you so much "Fake Lance" - kindness is SO appreciated.
It's great watching Phil count to 4 a couple of times during the Unbroken Chain, his face is classic...
"Tonight's Throckmorton (Tuesday, January 5) "rehearsal," was doing its best to act like a bona fide concert "
But its a rehearsal not a show..and too bad you didn't go to NYE Teddy because you missed the show. A real good bona fide concert.
I was there... At NYE.
I suppose you retired from ABC News Peter Jennings - or you would know I was there...
I had been feeling a little like my cup was half empty, but Tuesday filled my heart until it was overflowing. The show started out choppy, but started rocking with Greatest Story. Probably my favorite part of the ENTIRE RUN: seeing Phil sing along with the part in Magnolia Mountain "We burned the cotton fields down in the valley and ended up with nothing but scars. The scars became the lessons that we gave to our children after the war." If you don't like this song in the Dead context, I don't know what is wrong with you... Comes a Time was breathtaking. This band has really been nailing the ballads. The entire room was silent. Unbroken Chain drove it home for me (always always does), and when Bob false started Masterpiece and started fiddling with his guitar, Phil said "Since this is a rehearsal, we're going to let Bob change his battery. ::short pause:: The battery on his guitar, that is..." Love it!! To finish off, they somehow turned Ship of Fools into a rocker - not slow and building, but rocking from note one - very very fast tempo. And the Lovelight brought the house down, which was already very high due to the second half of the show.
