Elvis will be back tonight...
For those going, make sure you are there early tonight. They were telling everyone exiting last night to expect another early start for Sat.

Attics of My Life
R U fucking kidding me?
no one is kidding.
well, damn. i thought thursday had taken the cake until i saw this setlist. how was the playing overall? must. keep. refreshing. ticket. page. and. see. one. more. show!
WTF?
The Attics was outstanding -
Tonight was another barn-burner. There were mis-steps and hiccups to be sure, but tonight like Thursday felt more like a show and less like a rehearsal (e.g, like Wed and Fri). And what a finish! Excellent jams in Dark Star and Let It Grow. And Attics was as good as I've ever heard them do it. Sunshine and Zoe really sweeten up the vocal blend.
This is a tie with 12/27
(((10 minute set break)))
what.....no encore? LMAO
looks like it was a great show!
The Throck seemed more crowded than the Masonic Hall. Still room to dance..and juggle. Very pretty Theater, I got a kick out of seeing the mural of the jester sitting on atop the balcony about to jump. Well, that's how it looked to me.
Seemed like it was the geriatric crowd tonight, many with special needs. The blind person with seeing eye dog, dude in the wheel chair, woman who brought her own stool to stand on (no, she wasn't a "little person", just around 4'11"), the guy with a detached retina who said bright lights hurt his eyes, the man who was allergic to marijuana smoke (Cannabis arteritis), a few folks with flu symptoms, one carrying around his own vaporizer. Bobby looked gaunt. Aging hippies and their health problems, all we need, all we really need is GOOD LOVE...and some great music, which the band delivered tonight. My favorite moments were the Next Time You See Me, and the Attics - which was gorgeous. The one time I actually heard some emotion in John's (aka fake jerry) voice. The jamming was very good, and Bobby and Phil sounded crazy good. John can play, but it's weird hearing him having trouble with some of the lyrics - often missing the emotion and FEELING of the song and instead reciting the words.
The Hurricane, Death and Magnolia Mountain just didn't have much soul. Solid playing, but something just missing in John's delivery tonight. More rehearsals needed? Postpone the East Coast tour and just give us some more shows in Mill Valley, please ;)
From what I witnessed and heard others say, we would have to disagree with you about John's emoting. I find it difficult to believe that you didn't feel it on Death Don't. Your other 2 examples are songs he is just learning.
We? Let them speak for themselves. And like I said, TONIGHT anyway it seemed to me that John was reciting the words and not singing the songs with much emotion. He was reading the words more than singing them. Maybe he's having a hard time finding his OWN voice with Furthur after all these years with DSO "recreating" Jerry on stage. It was a "rehearsal" afterall, but just surprised to see him struggling. And surprised at how much more I enjoyed hearing Bobby and even Phil singing. I wish him all the best in developing his own voice. His guitar work was great.
Agree with John being "flat", especially on Hurricane. No emotion at all, and that's a song that needs to be done with feeling. The Magnolia Mountain was better, but you can't blame "fake jerry" from not being excited to cover a "fake dead" song...
But no complaining, the evening was wonderful.
Thanks everyone.
Okay, I'll speak for myself. I don't disagree with TightRope - John is clearly still learning some new tunes here - but IMHO it's not a lack of emotion so much as it is that he's busy concentrating on getting the words out and not so much on vocally 'working' the song.
That said, "Hurricane" is a bitch to sing and John's sweet vocal style lacks the snarl that Dylan and other vocalists have brought to the song. I was delighted to hear it and am curious to hear it again after he's had some time to make it his own.
And I thought he did a fine job with "Death Don't", giving the song's lyrics plenty of emotion. He does well with ballads and I look forward to hearing him sing more.
There is enormous potential in this line-up and they just keep getting better and better. I listened to some of the Fox Thr sbds yesterday and the band is sooo much more creative working the "in between" part of the songs.
Lastly, I'm not quite 50 yet but will proudly include myself as one of those geriatrics in attendance. Hell, if I was younger, I wouldn't have had the chance to listen to this wonderful stuff for as long as I have - and I've been listening to this music since I was 11 yrs old when my step-father introduced me to American Beauty and Workingmans Dead.
Keep on keepin on!
A few thoughts on "Magnolia Mountain". If that isn't a natural Dead song, I do't know what else would be. Not only does it have a musical style that just reeks of Jerry, just look at the lyrics and all the references to other GD songs:
I want to go to Magnolia Mountain
And lay my weary head down
Down on the rocks
On the mountain my savior made
Steady my soul and ease my worry
Hold me when I rattle like a hummingbird hummin'
Tie me to the rocks on the mountain my savior made
Lie to me
Sing me a song
Sing me a song until the morning comes
If the morning comes, will you lie to me
Will you take me to your bed
Will you lay me down
Till I'm heavy like the rocks on the riverbed
That my savior made
I want to be the bluebird singing
Singing to the roses in her yard
The roses in her yard her father grew for her
It's been raining that Tennessee honey
So long I got too heavy to fly
Ain't no bluebird ever gets too heavy to sing
Lie to me
Sing me a song
Sing me a song until the morning comes
And if the morning don't come, will you lie to me
Will you take me to your bed
Will you lay me down
Till I'm heavy like the rocks in the riverbed
That my savior made
We burned the cotton fields down in the valley
And ended up with nothing but scars
The scars became the lessons that we gave to our children after the war
But there ain't nothing but the truth up on the Magnolia Mountain
Where nobody ever dies
Steady your soul and ease your worry
They got a room for you
Lie to me like I lie to you
Calm me down until the morning comes
And if the morning don't come
Lie to me
Will you take me to your bed
Will you lay me down
All heavy like the rocks in the riverbed
That my savior made
For us
Man, this band seem to be developing the largest active catalogue of tunes of any Dead-related band in quite some time. I'm going to the Colorado shows, and it looks like there's a VERY good chance of hearing some tunes that I've NEVER heard live before. Yippee!!
This was better and longer than the 4th and 5th,although those were both good rehearsals, especially the second set! I just wanted to say after they played Magnolia Mountain,I couldn't get it out of my head. Is this a good thing?Nice to see you Ro and Frank and Doogels, and nice meeting you and hanging with you Lance, see you all tonight, love Bruce!
The moving earth show?
sick!
Bobby tossin in the MfG too, crazy....
Hey Deacon,
For a guy who's obviously a well-spoken, long-time, knowledgeable Head, why have you not been here on the Philzone for years?? There's been a huge influx of new folks for this whole Further run, and you're definitely one of the interesting ones. Stick around, brotha!!
>>>For a guy who's obviously a well-spoken, long-time, knowledgeable Head, why have you not been here on the Philzone for years<<<
Because he's a well-spoken, long-time, knowledgeable Head?
Well shucks, thank ya brother!
I am wondering how the tambourine factor has been at these rehearsal shows. Has Jay Lane been playing the tambourine constantly like he did at the New Years shows?
no, he hasn't, I've been watching
the room is too small for that whereas BGCC can handle the tamborines better
sweet
I remember hearing Magnolia Mountain for the first time in 2006, when Joan Osborne sang it with Phil & Friends, at the Beacon Theater. I also, could not get this song out of my head. Both lyrics and music are stunning. Lots of emotion, observation and other things, going on here. It's nice 2 c this song (hopefully) back in the rotation.
Back in 2006, some people in this room gave the writer of this song a hard time. It's a shame, because the author is a dead head that was heavily influenced by Jerry. He also is a song writer who has something to say. Not to mention that he can also pick a mean guitar. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
