I managed to park my old bones in a chair for much of last night, so now I'm refreshed and ready for more dancing tonight! I'm feeling a Scarlet->Fire coming up soon.
They were clearly toying with Scarlet as the second set opener last night before launching into St. Stephen
> They were clearly toying with Scarlet as the second set opener last night before launching into St. Stephen
swore I heard "Dancin'" right before I swore I heard "Scarlet" right before they busted out Stephen.
:-P
Probably they will drop the Mr. Charlie on us tonight as well.
I heard that Scarlet tease, too! And Mr Charlie would be freaking awesome. I'd love to hear them bring back Hard to Handle as well.
Mr. Charlie was on Fri. night's set list but didn't make it into the show.
Just scored a ticket online for tonight!!! So f*&%ing sweet.
My first show of the rehearsal run tonight - I'm so stoked. I want to leave work now and go stand in line
See you all there!
what's the web address for tix? is it still:
http://furthur.tickets.musictoday.com/Furthur/cale ndar.aspx
> what's the web address for tix? is it still:
Yes indeedy
best wishes to all on scoring tix - hope to see you inside!
I am waiting to hear the "unable to attend due to painful refresh-related injury" story.
;-)
I've been staring at the tickets screen refreshing so long I have the further logo burned into my retinas ;)
Only took a weeks worth of hope and getting refresh induced carpal tunnel syndrome but so worth it!
>>>They were clearly toying with Scarlet as the second set opener last night before launching into St. Stephen
Well, it wasn't my imagination then. I first heard (was hoping for) Stephen, but then thought they changed it up. Glad my original perception was correct, though there ain't nothing wrong with a Scarlet>Fire. Enjoy it tonight!
Pete - good for you, man! Yeah, it's one up and down ride trying to score these tickets, huh?! However, the payoff seems extra sweet, don't it?
My husband wrote me a "refresh" program, so I keep getting to the buy now and then told "no tickets". What the +#@k is the #@@kn secret on that? Thanks for all the reviews anyway. Keeps us up to date................
"All good things in all good time..."
See you all there!
I scored one for tonight yesterday afternoon and couldn't believe it. I must have jumped around screaming for at least five minutes.
Honestly, I'll be glad when this is done. What sadistic person came up with such a system? It's sick when you think about it.
On another note, think of all the tunes that haven't been played yet: Estimated, music never stopped, black peter, help/slip/franklins, ramble on rose, black throated wind, NFA, eyes...so much could happen tonight.
"so much could happen tonight"
and so much WILL happen tonight!
B-)>
red button red button red button red button red button red button come on red button help me i can not stop....
heres to breaking out the Gomorrah folks!
Come on John K
Nice Fitz...Because she looked behiiiiiind her
I can't take the suspense of refreshing over and over...carpal tunnel setting in. Must find red button...
you can do it jahk2 Here's a vibe for ya *********************************
On my way down in 30... I hear there are Bacon Rice Krispie treats.
Thanks Fitz!!! 3 shows, no complaints... one more would be sweet!
how many does T-morton hold? Must be sweet -wish I could be there. Was at the Filmore for DSO back in Dec. Fun being in Chicago
The Throckmorton part of the rehearsal run finished last night. That venue held approx 250 per night. Tonight and tmw the rehearsals will be held at the Masonic, which I understand is closer to 200-225.
masonic...maybe even less 160 or so
Thanks The lucky few for sure. Enjoy!
The Throckmorton actually holds 425, but the balcony was held for friends & family so they sold 300 a night, and it got fairly tight; not quite like a full show gets on the floor, but still tight.
The Masonic is a meeting hall, and they sell 200 for that, but 200 doesn't fill up the room like 300 did at the Throck so it's much more comfortable. Smaller room, more room.
I'M HITTING THE ROAD SOON!!!
Still at the office - physically. Mentally I left for the show a couple of hours ago...
Theater was small and full, but I never felt it was too crowded. I could move and had room to dance anywhere I stood. Not a lot of spinning, freakout room, but I don't care about that. Not many wooks in the place anyway, so no need for that kind of room.
Watching Hatari, making dinner before walking down to the show.
I used to live in Mill Valley up the hill from these venues. MV is among the country's nicest spots. It's accessible to everything great. These shows are a treat for those that are fortunate enough to attend. Thanks for all the updates. Looking fwd to Atlanta & Asheville!
OK lucky people who got in again.....what`s going on !!
Bob & Phil just left for a brake.
Just spoke to my friend who's already inside. She's planted right in front of John. I'm leaving now to join her. Later on, you wonderful freaks.

JK2, thanks for posting it. Haven't made a show yet. Keeps me connected at least. TY
Drea...keep refreshing...bay area shows coming in March too. Cheers.
I have an autorefresh program, but can't get past the buy it page = no tickets available. Cheers, see you in March
and a fine show it was. not a barn burner like the last two nights but better than last Wed or Fri, IMHO.
I thought they played well, if occasionally a bit unevenly, during the first four songs. Mtns was good, but a little shaky, too. Then things started to gel during Just a Little Light. By the time they launched into Caution, which was awesome, the band was in full-tilt boogie mode.
my lovelight was turned on tonight. thanks boys
Phil's stagelist
let's try this again
'I' -is the Walrus' (not actually played tonite) - after that show!
What a great small venue and another AmAzing nite in Mill Valley.
'Caution' rocketed - towards what I thought would be the finish, Bobby said something like "let's do that again, were rehearsing" and shook it furthur - one more time. At the end I think he said "And that's just the first one".
gotta eat and look for a red button.
Caution was INSANE, I need to sleep with the hall light on.
thast pretty wild man...
we were talking about mtns of the moons earlier and he fuckin did it...crazy. and i really hope the band eventually releases SBDs because this was a special run indeed.
I thought I saw all the recording equipment behind the sound board. JK was standing next to the cd burners. it had several burners and the guy was making discs as everyone was leaving......hmmmmm.
I thought the show really picked up during the jam in Mtns. of the Moon......but that Caution? Whew!
Can't wait for tomorrow night.
There is no way to know what this show was like from looking at that set list.
This was a psychedelic meltdown. Absolute mind-bending, knee-buckling, ear-twisting INTENSE jamming throughout; far more intense, bizarre and well played than anything I've heard yet.
This was a private party that started IN Mill Valley, but ended up a mile ABOVE Mill Valley. If you looked up about 9:30 you might have seen a tiny pulsing Masonic meeting hall high above you!
This was not music for children or the timid. This was grown up music tonight, and I believe that anyone who likes adventurous, rocking, SEARING improvisation would have enjoyed this.
El Paso was beautifully played, very soft and smooth. A friend said it sounded like an acoustic version, very gentle, very nice.
That Two Djinn song was good. I'd never heard it before but it was very good.
No More Do I... need to hear that song again. Good jam out though. Pretty much everything tonight had some fine "outside" play, even where you wouldn't expect it.
Peaceful Valley sounded great, except that JK is still learning the tune, but they're hitting the groove on this very well...
And then, OUT WE WENT.........
Meltdown.
They spaaaaaacccccced out of Peaceful Valley & took a great, trippy ride and really took their time sloooowwly melting into Mountains Of The Moon.
(It should be said that there were more speakers set up this time and the sound was SIGNIFICANTLY better than two weeks ago, and Phil was BOMBING US! He dropped one HUGE one in Slipknot that I felt it in my feet, my knees, my chest and my eyes. Wow.
Also hard to imagine that there were 200 people in that room. Half to two thirds full at best, with room for everyone. The shows here are private parties; there's really no other way to describe what it's like here. And like any good party the hard booze was flowing, unlike at the Throckmorton, and people toward the back were jabbering pretty good.)
There was a great, slow lead-in to MOTM that really took its time. It was beautiful, quiet and they didn't rush it, and it dropped us softly into the song just right.
MOTM was brilliant, and I'm not a huge fan, but the band was so in sync that they could have played I Can't Drive 55 and it would have been great at this point. Simply a top-drawer performance.
Spaccceee out of that in to Just A Little Light, which I don't even remember except that they jammed their way right out of that (all these jams were extended and beautifully & powerfully played) and then...
That damn Caution just blew the roof off the place.
Unreal version, unreal jamming, Russo is FUCKING GREAT all through this, Bob reeling back the years sounding great all through this stretch, and there is no Fake Jerry is this band, his name is John and he can PLAY!
Oh, and Phil Lesh was digging DEEP into that blob of goo-looking thing he plays. Just an amazing player and he showed us again tonight why we love him.
HOTW just continued this super sound, and then the Slipknot hit the turbo jets and once again we BLASTED OFF!!! Incredible jamming in here. This is what every one of us wants from this music. Nothing like this or the Caution jamming has been heard from this band yet.
Cassidy was a twist, was played extremely well with yet another extended solo/jam in the main song, and then the real jam went deeeeeeeeep outside again.
None of the jamming was rushed, everything was sharp and confident and there was real exploration happening from some guys who really know how to look into the odd, dark corners that others always miss.
Franklin's was a great way to close it, JK played it so well, and they did a "fake" ending that seemed impromptu, and went back for one more ripping time rolling away the dew.
Again, to me Russo was brilliant the whole 2nd half of this amazing set of music.
I know I'm gushing here a bit, but I was not tripping and I'm not a newbie to this whole thing, and I say again this was a truly heavy psychedelic performance and was one of those nights where the story is simply not told by looking at the list.
Many many highlights, but the Caution & Slipknot were unreal. They just blew the roof off that little place. Almost literally, as one of the beautiful giant paintings that hang on the walls fell a couple of minutes after the lights came up. BOOM! No one hurt but it was close. Phil was RATTLING the building tonight!
For me this was the best of the 10 rehearsals I've seen overall. As always there will be differing opinions on that, but there's no doubt this one had the most serious improvisational playing, and that's what I'm looking for.
One more.
It's not enough.
Well, seems it's time to "Dust off those 'trusty' strings just one more time...gonna make em' shine....Shine!"
Wow. Sounds like a great one, Lance. Thanks for reporting, and making us drool..
Great review Lance,I totally agree! Great to see you again last night! The girls were great in Help On The Way! I couldn't see them at Throckmorton, but last night I was in front of John, and I could have reached out and touched his guitar if I wanted to,enjoy the lower stage here compared to Throckmorton. My feet are killing me,and I was on large amounts of caffeine,so maybe that kept me standing all night! Just had my right ankle fused in September, that sucker is holding up well,it got a good test last night! Seeing them play Just A Little Light with Jeff playing Brent's keyboard was a little spooky to say the least, and I had killer goose bumps all night long! So although I was tired from the night before, the music was so damn great,it didn't matter! See you all tonight, love Bruce! Ps Thanks to Frank Sinatra for his kindness to me,it means so much Frank, and it was also good to see you Ro,have fun in Maui!
>>>Caution was INSANE, I need to sleep with the hall light on.<<<
LMAO! Can't wait for the east coast tour!
What Lance said. Amen, brother!
Real good review Lance...real good review...one mo sho....red button be good to me.
>>>think of all the tunes that haven't been played yet: Estimated, music never stopped, black peter, help/slip/franklins, ramble on rose, black throated wind, NFA, eyes<<<
Has furthur played a Row Jimmy yet? Rehearsals or otherwise? I have heard many an awesome Row Jimmy out of JK over the years.
Also...I'm all for Gomorrah, but while we are at it, have you heard what JK can do with Catfish John?, jus' sayin.
they have played estimated, music never stopped, black peter, help/slip/frank black throated wind/ NFA, and eyes....
not sure bout row jimmy, pretty sure they did that in oakland. but yeah, they're bringing on these ratdog songs so more JGB is fair game im sure
how's about -> passenger, cold rain (when I got home last nite) & snow, hard to handle?
I has those 3 on my 'songs they might play' list- back at first Throck show on sun 1/3.
they are stil available!
Caution stats:
Last three GD:
10/22/78 Winterland
10/27/79 - Cape Cod
5/6/81 - Nassau
P&F - 27 times (some just jams)
The Dead - 8 times (4 in 2003, and 4 on the spring tour 2009)
Last night was the first Furthur Caution (and it was HOT!)
they have played passenger and cold rain. but no hard to handle...
were you at the first three throck shows???
without any risk of overstating the obvious - Caution was insane! Though I never saw him live, I'm sure Pigpen would have been proud of the jam the boys dropped on us last night.
now, where's that red button. Must....refresh....
got my fingers crossed for ya darren. The Caution was my high lite of all high lites the past couple of weeks. including new years. Bobby nailed the vox. and Phil dropped the bombs on us. saweeeeet!
{{ were you at the first three throck shows??? }}
I was @ sun 1/3 and thur 1/7 throck; and last nite's masonic.
{{ they have played passenger and cold rain. but no hard to handle... }}
I saw Passenger at Fox 9/20. Haven't looked at all East Coast lists (now I see they did Cold Rain in NYC).
But I see no passenger , cold rain, or hard to handle, from the NYE run, nor the mill valley runs.
Great review Lance, you did it justice. My mind is still bent from last night!
nicee. yea, i caught the first three throck shows, truly amazing. its amazing to think that they'll be breaking out some of these songs on the tour (Get Back, No more do I, Magnolia Mtn, On the road again , etc)... more exciting than anythng the dog has done in years!!
anyway, thought you were referring to all of furthur, not just the left coast..
how is the masonic compared to the throck??
kind of quick review:
El Paso was a soft and sweet death of the cowboy. TWo Djinn def has lots of jamming potential. It fElt like the band is newer to this song than others, but i loved hearing Phil add his sound to the dog tune (thought i was dreaming). No MOre do I and Peaceful Valley are both songs I like more and more each time i hear them, like cousins you get know better as you have more family functions. Tonight's No More do I sounded tighter than before.
I left my body around Mts of the Moon. Had just watched the Playboy after Dark version earlier in the day (thanks to the Philzone) and was super stoked to hear it live. The jams up to this point had already been pumping the audience, but there is something strange and eerie in the sound of this song. Space travel was on !!
Then we landed with Just a Little light, which was tighter and more fluid than Fri at the Throck. The band is really getting this song down and it's great to hear Jeff turned up in the mix. By this time, the crowd was moving and grooving. IMO, Furthur could also do a killer BLow Away.
As has been mentioned before, Caution melted down the house. The energy and musicianship going on was fantastic. Everyone came along for the groovin ride. Not much settling time, because Help Slip came next. Lots of crunchy jams in both turning into a nice surprise of Cassidy. The transition felt like walking into a sunny meadow after cruising through the forest all morning, a welcomed ray of light. Cassidy was solid and inspired the crowd's energy once again.
After a nice donor rap... in which Phil hoped we have as much fun bringing the energy to shows as they have playing the energy in the music... we were off to Franklin's Tower. I've always thought Franklin's is a great song to end or start with. A classic moment was to see Bobby and Phil's reaction when the crowd went crazy for the 'Franklin's reprise'. They looked at each other with a 'guess the song's not over yet and man, the energy is through the roof ' kind of look. Smiles all around
What's great is the band members seems to be having as much fun as us =]
the masonic is like the throck sans balcony.
Picture a medium sized room that holds about 200 folks with a low stage in the front
.. yea, thats what ive ben told. WIsh i caught aty least one there, but i'mlucky i caught 3 being from VT. I really enjoyed the artwork and the entire atmosphere of teh throck though... and the fact that it was across from the ol' sweetwater.
*RIP Sweetwater*
Where the Throck is wider than it is deep, the Masonic is the opposite, with the stage at one end of the long rectangle. The stage at the Masonic is perhaps two feet high, less than half that of the Throck, so it's harder to see the band if you're standing toward the back. There seem to be a few more speakers at the Masonic, which helps because people are literally right in front of the main speakers, muddying up the sound a bit but not outrageously so. I was amused to observe one blissed out 'head practically hugging the speaker in front of John K. I can only wonder how much his ears must be ringing today.
As weary as my legs are, I am going to miss having this extraordinary phun every night in my backyard. This has been a HUGE gift from the band and this is one 'head who will never forget this truly special experience. From the bottom of my heart, thanks fellas (and of course the lovely ladies, too)!
Darren, did you get a ticket? Has anyone gotten one today? Re-living last night now and wishing I had tried to do the refresh thing all day...oh well...I got seven killer shows, on top of the Fox shows. Last night sorta sealed the deal for me with that Caution. Feeling pretty blessed. Love ya'll. Have fun tonight! Think of me (at home grading papers) during your final toast at Vascos~!
Best Monday Ever. Had a feeling something strange would bubble up since the date was 01-11-10. Awesome night with some heavy psychedelic jams, (made all the more so by some leftover treats I had from NYE). MOTM and Caution...brain still smoldering...
Friendly crowd with lots o' good vibes, met a bunch of happy people, lots of solo travelers.
I was standing right in front of the painting that fell off the wall when its wire snapped. Some other people ran over and caught it before it fell forward on me. Put my jacket on to leave and a piece of the cable and hooks from the painting somehow fell into my coat pocket. So weird to be attacked by a painting especially since I am a painter. Wandered around MV to chill for awhile, headed back to Vascos and they hooked me up with a free coffee, thank You Vascos! Their pizza was darn good before the show as well.
And to top it all off I scored another ticket just now for tonight!!!
Feels like somebody is suddenly watching over me and smiling.
..and the masonic ceiling is like 10 feet (as compared to throck's much higher )...
from a mostly left-coaster-only zoner:
This has been icing on the cake for me: after the Sept Fox run (which, when announced had me more 'enthused' then when the DEAD spring-summer run was announced after NYE '09); Furthur NYE shows, 2 great throcks (sun 1/3, thu 1/7) and add last nite's roof-raising @ masonic - I'm ecstatic about this band!
..and the energy it's giving Bobby *especially*!
I may just have to get on a plane and book the Broomfield,CO shows. College buddy nearby, Boulder. He has condo @ keystone {{40+ yrs a skier, am I}}. Let's seee - Ski mid-week, catch 2 weekend GA shows. Then home to SF for Phil's b-day. YOW!
thanks boyz!
Enjoy All - that are in for tonite!
wild story about painting and the hooks coincidence, peter!
I heard it crash; and am glad to hear someone 'caught' it, and no one (like yourself)- were injured! Amazing it fell ...after show...
...Caution and Help-Slip probably loosened it. ;-}
Reminds me of that story about the final days of the Winterland, when a chunk of ceiling fell after a soundcheck - right on the spot where David Crsoby had been standing only moments earlier. Gonna tear this whole building down!
B-)>
that painting was HUGE and heavy- so glad nobody was hurt!! I definitely predict a Samson for tonight, based on that!!!! haha!!!
this show, to me, had some really high highs!!! but it was a rollercoaster night- it also had some pretty low lows for me.
first of all- El Paso was a nice surprise to hear... but I also thought it was pretty rough, Bobby was forgetting verses that he was reading right off the teleprompter... and then on into 2Djinn... I'm not a Ratdog fan. it was solid, and weird... John was playing all kinds of dischordant solo stuff. At this point- I wanted PHIL!! so we got Phil.... but No More Do I was the 4th time through on this run!! John sang it with emotion, and it was still cool to hear the 3rd time (for me.) And then Peaceful Valley. I'm not a Ryan Adams fan either. While this version was better than fridays.... that isn't saying too much. Crowd was pretty lethargic durign the whole tune. But things picked up in the jam afterwards, which eventually pretty much fell apart and then came back together quickly (thanks to John's lead) into what morphed into Mountains. A very upbeat Mountains- probably the fastest I've ever heard it! It was great to see this gem once again... but I was left missing PLF's great slow versions of this tune.... but it still delivered. In giving the play by play of reviews, it begs mentioning, as a whole- this band really goes there, and gets deep into "it"- and they do it effortlessly. Bobby isn't flashing hand signals, Phil isn't barking into the mic... nobody fights for the lead- and John does most of the musical leading, really. And that leaves everyone to do their job as best as they can, and it really shows, especially in the deep stuff like Mountains. great jamming in this one.
And then Just a Little Light. a repeat from Friday... but it was better than Friday's version, definitely more solid and hard hitting. And thanks Jeff for playing Brent's organ, instead of just playing piano!!!
Caution!!!! this one went deep.... way deep!! Man these guys take it *there*!! By the time Bobby stepped up to growl the lyrics, they were at full steam. I thought Bobby's vocals were really low in this section, and after going through it once- he brought things back through another time for good measure, to better crowd response. The band kicked into an awesome psychedelic jam after this which brought us into a tight Help. Well executed (but this song always makes me feel a bit sad when its played later in the show, I always think that the band has turned a corner and that the end of the show is in sight.) Slip was EXCEPTIONAL! dark twisty jamming, so fun!! deep! and then, right when you're really ready for the major chords of Franklins...we got Cassidy. which they do well... but at the same time- another Bobby tune? alright, alright.
and then they leave the stage without saying a word... are they gonna play another set, like the last two nights? I'm ready for it!!! fired up and ready to go, Phil!! And then he gives us the donor rap and tells us they have time for one more. Knowing its Franklins, I kick on the dancing shows and rock out with the band right up until the magic hour of 10pm.... and that's the end of that one!!
can't wait for Tuesday night, the last one of this run- I think its gonna be a gooey Phil treat for us, oh yes!!!
