Midnight on a carousel ride
Reaching for the gold ring
Down inside
Never could reach it, just slips away
But I try

From what I was told Phil announced that the festival had rescheduled his performance to accomodate Kanye West. This was a high energy, balls to the wall show that ended at 3:15. Full show just no set break.

Pete, thanks for that setlist and info. Were you there? Or was that relayed?

I'm not quite sure how I feel about Phil getting pushed around for Kanye West. Best that he agreed to do as he was told though, so Kanye didn't label him as someone who hated black people. lol

Relayed from a buddy who was there...He said that Kanye ended up starting way late like over an hour after Phil and that he sucked.

Very nice of your friend to help us out. Thanks to you as well. Sucks about the whole rescheduling thing, especially since it wasn't needed in the first place. Oh well... at least no music was cut. That we know of! :-)

And we should be worried about what Kanye West thinks? Why?

I have a tiny amount of confidence that one artist wouldn't begrudge another over issues of time, as opposed to making a heartfelt (though imo misguided) statement about the bystander-in-chief in the wake of the worst natural disaster in this country's history.

When I say misguided, I'm echoing someone else here's recent sentiment that W doesn't care about anyone, not just african-americans.

Just one more brain picking question and then I'll let ya be... :-)

Stella, instrumental again?

FWIW, that Kanye comment was made in jest.

It's too early still to be so serious. :-)

i do hate kanye west and it has NOTHING to do with the color of his skin...he feeds on hate, specializes in agressive derogatory themes and tears down bridges rather than building them...i really hate him and that whole genre...

Who is Kanye West?

Wow, way to pigeon hole Kanye and 'that whole genre'. I mean c'mon... how much do you really know about Kanye West? The stories you see and hear through the media have been enough for you to decide to Hate him?

because 'he feeds on hate' you 'really hate him'? wow. that really makes you seem like a positive, loving person in contrast to big bad kanye and the whole genre of rap and hiphop.

I saw the folks from yonder mountian string bad rip west also. WTF is hip hop doin at a hippie festival?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By The Dude (Trichrome) on Sunday, June 15, 2008 - 09:02 pm: Edit Post

hip hop can work at a presumed 'hippie' festival it just has to be conscious stuff like KRS-ONE or live band hip hop; its all about the vibe so if the vibe is conscious it will work; not ego weirdness like KW, i can see why Bonnaroo made the choice but look at the aftermath and the consequences; pearl jam and then Phil on the main stage wouldve have been epic; hey even the cooloest fest in the land can make mistakes here and there; guarenteed it wont happen like that next year

I think based on the set list without hearing the show it seems like it was high energy with good flow and I don't believe that Kayne West hurt Phil's set in any way. If Phil need to go piss he would of ran off during a jam and took a piss I have seen him do it before. I am surprised that no one else is complaining about the at&t choice of music to web cast. Pearl Jam the headliner of the festival was not even web casted. I say if you want a good hippie fest don't go to the one with pearl jam and metallica as headliners. If your going to see just Phil than enjoy the the time you get to spend witnessing this magical music being made.

I agree totally....I was at the ROO 2 years ago when Tom Petty was there on FRI and P and F closed the show on the MAIN STAGE Sun with an easy going thank god less than drenching rain storm with no thunder( for us tapers that is good).....Pearl Jam and Phil on the main stage this year would have made major sense......as I wondered when I saw the lineup on the stage set ups and I wondered why Phil did not get the main stage.....Have a great day.....10K here I come.....Thanks

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Wallace Stegner (Backonthebus) on Monday, June 16, 2008 - 09:50 am: Edit Post

the delay was simply a matter of unloading the Pearl Jam stage (the band went an hour past its scheduled end time, playing until about 1:15 a.m.) and loading the West stage.

http://www.wtop.com/?nid=114&sid=1422537

Sounds like the Kanye staging was really elaborate, with an intergalactic theme, which may explain why the Bonnaroo organizers thought this would be a good late night show. Not sure that I would want to have to put something like that together real fast for a fest set, recipe for trouble.

I couldn't have been more excited to see Phil and the boys do a four late night set. Pearl Jam even gave them props during their set for having a four time slot. "The set" was unreal, great setlist, high energy, but it was one set. They started late and finished an hour early. The crowd stood there in disbelief. I don't want to have a bad taste in my mouth after such a great show, but I do. I still love you Phil but I be lying if I said we weren't let down. Cant wait to see you on my birthday June 17.

Besides the Kanye factor this was a awsome show. I remember the walk from Pearl Jam to Phil & Friends was the biggest highlight of Bonnaroo 08. Phil was getting down late night. Walked right up to the Phil Zone. Couldn't get enough of the sound pouring out of the speakers. Had some weird telepathic thing happen during fire on the mountain. Didn't leave til daybreak.
