Just getting the vibes rollin'...totally stoked for this show...
VIVA LA' PHIL!!!!
Peakin' at the Peak!
Anyone been to this venue previously? Any input or tips?
tips?
be prepared to be blown away.
only seen one show there (Railroad Earth back in December), but it feels like a private party on top of a mountain.
beautiful setting, beautiful venue.
Phil's gonna tear it up!!!
Penn's Peak is the best place to phreek!
Penn's Peak is an awesome venue!! Just follow the no smoking (anything) rule and you'll have a grand time. I've seen people thrown out for lighting up, and when you see all of the beautiful wood inside, you will understand. There's a big deck outside where you can smoke and this will be the first time I've been there during nice weather so will actually be able to appreciate to mountain views.
I am so freaking psyched!!
have a good time peggy o
hope to bump into you on friday
peace out
The low thursday night will be in the 40s. Bring a jacket.
wish i was peakin with you freaks....SEE you at the landing on friday night instead!!!
So is this an indoor venue with an outside patio or is it more like a shed?
This is an indoor venue. Picture a decent sized ski lodge big bar in back of venue, two small bars on the sides and an outdoor patio with a beer stand. The patio has been added to and is huge for all your smoking needs. Dont smoke anything in the venue go outside its a free for all outside. And the parking lot is fantastic everything is paved now and its a blast. Security is great just don't be an ass. The only thing they care about is nitrous anything else is fair game. Spent alittle time on the mountain!
see you there freeks
fantastic arena for phil and co! can't wait for this to happen...will be there, with full-face grin, and friday too!! Dont forget, peeps, afterparty on friday is at a bar called O'Malleys, just over the walt whitman bridge, where splintered sunlight will continue our escape!! woohoo!!
Gratefully yours,
Dashiki Joe
~ 9 mile skid on a 10 mile ride! Woohoo!
What a nice place. The location is on a wooded mountain hilltop in the southeast PA Pocono mountains. The shakedown in the lo was not crowded so we could enjoy the wares.
Venue is like an all wood dancefloor about the size of a basketball court surrounded be an elevate dancefloor on 3 sides. There is a balcony, more like a loge with a row or two of seats and dancespce in the two sides. All in light woods.
Stage looks just right, size wise. Plenty of room.
We are sitting in a taper section claimed at the front of the loge facing the stage. There are chairs and a wood tabletop to work on.
Will check other boards and post updated there or here
Just got a text from a buddy who is reporting an extra mic stand on the stage... We'll see if he is correct!
I think he is right. There are two mics where Larry stands. One is more in front of Molo.
Guess tulis will be place for updates.

And show... Wow!
lost in the rain in juarez, eh...nice set and the venue looked sweet lucky ducks :-)
Amazing set list. All that with Teresa???Can't wait to hear the recordings. Crytpical>TOO>Good Lovin'!!!! Did Molo have a nice drum solo hidden in that Good Lovin'? Please tell me he pulled the old Billy tribal in there.
amazing how much light a woman can bring to such a dull scene. teresa killed it.....
Phil lesh is the coolest motherfucker i've ever seen. He never ceases to amazing me, his passion his love for goin for it, his love for this music. Teresa was fantastic shes adds a lovely voice to the harmonies. The dancin' was total surprise she nailed it brought great energy to it. The acoustic set was the tits. I seen phil do acoustic before but this was just sweet and soothing. Then a little more electric Samson, High Time, Hard Rain and end on a Thumb. Thank You Mr. Lesh.
dull scene meaning the crowd........
not the band......
Teresa is awesome!
It really was Teresa's night.
show was an A. Crowd was a bit wookie-ish, but not too bad, and the acoustics were great throughout, although a noticiable differene being ten rows back from the stage then being on the side. Think Fillmore Denver in a high A-framed ceiling, and a ton more room, especially of the sides that are elevated a few feet above the dancefloor.
The music was tight, very rootsy, and had a full Lesh attacks thrown in for good measure... Other One chugged, molitz added so much texture, but all in all, it was Jackie's night. He owned teh stage.
Psyched for tomorrow!
thanks for the updates rob and sunra!
it's nice to have the zone back in the loop this tour!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gubym - thanks for the youtube link, that's pretty f'ing sweet!
What time did the show end?
started a little after 8 and ended couple minutes after midnite 4 hours of good stuff
Thank you! You guys lucked out, THREE SETS! Thanks too, Mike for the Ripple. It is sweet!
Phil-lite show. Seems like Phil mirrored the easy and cool vibe of the venue with the setlist. The rock and roll had a soft swing (Big RR Blues, Deal). Nice Motown (Theresa’s Dancin’, and an 11:45 Midnight Hour)… Some verse heavy Dylan with a stellar Jackie Hard Rain and an unexpected, but not-so-stellar Phil Tom Thumb. Some psychedelia (Playin’ Cryptical). Some Power (TOO and Sampson)
But mainly this was a folksy acoustic style show with classic tunes performed brilliantly. Theresa adds a vocal ingredient missed from last tour. Harmonies were spot on.
Ripple was (dare I say) the BEST Ripple I have ever heard.
Morning Comes, Easy Wind, High Times and the whole acoustic set were very well
played/sung. Great stuff!
Nice show, well orchestra by our favorite bandleader. I do agree it was Jackie and Theresa’s night….but lest us not forget the backbone of Larry, Molo and Phil…Molitz was tasty, but (as frequently been the case with him) too spotty in the PA mix.
I don’t understand after mangling Alligator every time he sings it, why Phil does not just delegate the tune to Jackie.
I’m expecting some of the bigger/ heavier offerings tonight.
RIP Buzz Hoffman (drifting too far from the shore)
damn damn damn,,,,they played almost everything I wanted to hear tonight at the landing...WELL the time is right for dancin in the streets!!!~
see ya tonight
Three set shows are always special !!!!
Hey Al,
Thanks for the review!
OK....great show...great sound
definitely a wookie crowd though, KC
and now the bummer...the worst security cro-magnons ever....worse than the yellow jackets at the meadowlands and the horseback nazis in nassau...i saw 3 different people -- including 2 middle aged ladies thrown out of the show for simply lighting a tobacco cigarette inside during the show...no warning....no please put it out...they were tossed....definitely fascist goons....get this message to Phil....they phucked with his phans
You are welcome Nick...a few more observations: Phil has a new 5 string acoustic bass that sounds much better than his standup. Phil looked very happy last night. Why did Phil choose Dancin' last night? After all, at midnight tonight in Philadelphia, PA....summer will be here and the time will be right for dancin' in the streets (on that hard concrete pier on Columbus Blvd).
Penns Peak is very conservative with the smoking, always has been, and a the zero tolerance smoking policy is normally made very clear.
No one should ever be surprised for getting tossed from a show for smoking at PP.
Just the way it is.
They also provide a great place for smokers.
Sounds like a fantastic show, certainly not worth getting tossed for a butt or a spleef.
Thanks for the YouTube link. I know that the problem is amplified by having the camcorder in the middle of the crowd, but sad to see that the Bay Area is not the only the place where Phil audiences have no idea how to SHUT THE FUCK UP during quiet parts of the show. Kinda like folks aren't even listening. Sad.
>>>Why did Phil choose Dancin' last night? After all, at midnight tonight in Philadelphia, PA....summer will be here
can you say golden road... and i think the official time summer rolls in is 7:59
See that girl barefooting along
Whistling and singing, she's a-carrying on
Got laughing in her eyes, dancing in her feet
She's a neon light diamond, she can live on the street
Hey, hey, come right away
Come and join the party every day
Hey, hey, come right away
Come and join the party every day
Well, everybody's dancing in a ring around the sun
Nobody's finished, we ain't even begun
So take off your shoes, child, and take off your hat
Try on your wings and find out where it's at
ey, hey, come right away
Come and join the party every day
Hey, hey, come right away
Come and join the party every day
Take a vacation, fall out for a while
Summer's coming in and it's going outa style
Well, lie down smoking, honey, have yourself a ball
'Cause your mother's down in Memphis, won't be back till the fall
best venue ive ever been to, so much room, great sound EVEYWHERE, even in the stairways...great shakedown scene outside too, we got great glass, nugs (not 4 me as i obstained for the first time ever, but i did a litte fungus since that will not stay in my system), and all kinds of illicit things available, and i got a great dye for the first time in 10 years...
i didnt think security were being dicks at all...and NO WAY was the security worse than medowlands or nassau, no f'in way...they were no where to be seen if you werent stupid...they had 2 outside decks to smoke on , so if u were dumb enough to smoke inside, u deserve what comes to you...
the show was also fabulous, i saw 2 nokias, and its so obvious Jackie is more comfortable, and he and larry actually played some sreaming leads...and my God is Teresa a beautiful woman and singer!!!!!! never thought id see a till the morn comes = so cool...best high time iver ever seen, and the good loving was the old school type with that riff they do from the 70's!!!!!!!!! jsut amazing show and time!!!!!!! im burnt toast but im going tonight...it will be hard going to this venue after the gorgous place last night, but thats life...happy phil summer alll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
whadda place tu phreek .. da PEAK!!
http://www.archive.org/details/plf2008-06-19.flyin ggonz.flac16
on the Archive already!!
We had no problem with the security in the venue. If you want to be treated badly, just go to Camden. Not only are the police looking to bust heads in the parking lot; in the venue itself security will tell you where to walk. Dont use this exit door right in front of you, go all the way around and up a ramp and use this exit door.
What did the smokers last night expect standing in a beautiful all wood venue? Sure, light some cigarettes midfloor and flick 'em when your done. And while your at it blow some smoke in my face and my kids' face for good luck! I have no sympathy for the smokers in the venue who got kicked out. Tough lesson for them, but deserved. Even if it weren't such an obvious fire hazard it is a piggish thing to do in a crowd. Most nonsmokers would choose not to have smoke wafting in their faces while they attempt to enjoy some live music. There were two decks in the venue, one on each floor, with the most exquisite view that the responsible smokers took advantage of.
sooooooooooooooo beautiful...Joan who...jasut kdding Joand, still love you!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jennifer I couldn't have said it better
This is my backyard venue and not only that but beautiful and one of a kind. There is no need to smoke inside and I bet most of the bands that play there would agree.
phor da phans..
CK that is sweet! I want one
I'd also like to know what the deal is with Phil shows having the most chatty audiences I've ever heard. In Denver, it was almost as loud as the music. Why do people come to shows to talk to each other, get on cell phones, etc?
> thrown out of the show for simply lighting a tobacco cigarette inside during the show...no warning....no please put it out...they were tossed....definitely fascist goons....get this message to Phil....they phucked with his phans
Good, they deserved to get tossed for lighting up inside the timber box. No smoking means NO SMOKING. um, unless you're Jackie Greene.
Jackie needs to get himself a nicotene patch to wear during the show!
>but i did a litte fungus since that will not stay in my system<
oh it stays in your liver for a really long time you can count on that, ahahahah too funny
Jackie ain't gettin tossed for smokin, evah!
wooka wooka wooka
It's been a long time since I've been at a venue that was so cool. Next to no security in the lot, super cool scene, everyone was pumped. When the band's tour bus pulled in with Molo in Shotgun, the crowd cheered and the cheers were answered by jubiliant honks of the band's bus. Good omen!
Flying high on a Pocono mountain top! Pure super kindefeeling from the band all 3 sets....Teresa was 100% in the game too! Fungulicious!
Random Comments:
The place reminded me very much of Roseland in NYC except it wasn't a squish scene with edgy New Yorkers. It was really just the shape of the room and the wrap around balcony. Very intimate. Smaller than a high school gym. Very idyllic location. Beautiful view from the restaurant and balcony. Didn't have to pay extra to park. Loved the fireworks in the lot after the show. I'd go back to see Phil there in a second.
I really like Theresa's singing. There's just something so girlish about her voice.
The bass Phil played during the acoustic set was a regular electric base but it had a hollow body with an F-hole. Very striking visually. I guess Phil was getting jealous of all Larry Campbell's exotic acoustic-ish instruments and decided to have one built for himself.
The music: Easy Wind was cool to hear though the transitions between time signatures were rough. Agree with previous comments about Alligator and also feel the same about the Other One; Phil just can't seem to wrap his lips around the words while playing his bass. Dancin' (a personal favorite) with Theresa's lead vocal made it sound very much more like the original Motown version of Martha and the Vandella's than anything the Dead ever played. I haven't listened to the recording yet, but I thought it was quite hot and well played.
Drifting Too Far was goose-pimple inducing beautiful. Ripple almost made me cry. Samson was interesting but Larry needs to learn how to really make his guitar wail to make it special. Till the Morning Comes was special to hear. High Time was very pretty. A Hard Rain's-a-Gonna Fall rocked very hard. I liked it much better live than I did on recordings.
During the Good Lovin' Jackie swung his mic towards the audience and instigated some audience participation by saying "what are you, embarrassed or something." Very amusing showmanship.
During the Midnight Hour Jackie switched guitars, but when he got the second guitar he didn't plug it in. Larry was jamming and Jackie just stoon there for over a minute watching him while twirling his guitar plug around and around in the air making a show of it. The message to Larry was "I'm not going to join in with you yet, you just keep jamming and jamming and thinking up more hot licks to play. Again, very amusing showmanship.
Tried posting the other night and failed...here it is..this place is maybe the best secret on the east coast...smoking is VERBOTIN...I tried to light a number on the floor when lights went down and security right there- I dare u to lite that doob...I said I'm not lighting anything and he let me go...gave me that fingers to eyes "i'm watchin u,,,"- but gave me break....
Bigg rr bounced and deal tried real hard and was goo. easy wind was sooo nice to hear...Jackie changes guitars DURING tunes more than anything...aligator was trippy and Dancin was right on.Short set-annoucement we got a real treat for ya tonight-an acoustic set and more electric later...old Heads rejoiced.
Acoustic set was tremendous..incredible harmines w/ Teresa...Campbell killed the Mandolin, Fiddle . Deep Elem was thumpy as all hell. Ripple gave me chills.
@nd Electric with a nice Sampson, Till the Mornin Comes was SUPERB. And High Time may have been the most beatiful bittersweet version I ever witnessed. Struck a major chord in Me....Hard Rain was rocked and big...Playin felt like the never quite got on the same page and was brief...Cryptical was nice and Other One had some violence...yes...Good loving worked very well and Midnite pulled us thru....Tom Thumbs nice and out we went.
Capbell on the Pedal Steel was brillant...Jackie pulled the rock star piece without going over the edge. Phil had a great smile most of the night and said what a great little place we have here..he dug it.
I would say it was incredible w/ the 3 sets, most was played with a lota heart, no huge bombastic moment but maybe the most gratifying show this ol head has seen since PLQ. Acoustic was my highlight and the High Time.
Great Great Great...whata place...
PS I thought sound was good on floor...not loud enough....not alotta "X" factor but good..fairly tight...did I mention hair raising vocals during High Time ???? Still the best 50 bucks for great stuff...Outa 10 gotta go 8-9, even just for the 3 sets and acoustic....been singing Deep Elem now for 3 days...
Just a few photos from the Peak and Jim Thorpe, PA.
May I add, great time...show a bit mellow for my tastes, but perfect for the evening with the wife, wine and brews...
Ok, let's try this again, one at a time...
Rose Road, Jim Thorpe PA
Indoor at the Peak...between Set 1 and 2...
On the balcony outdoors...should have gotten a panoramic shot...didn't figure it out, until inside...
Second set was the show stealer....
Thanks Killowatt!!!!!!!!!
