Sorry, couldn't wait, too damned excited .
Streaming Miami now, kicking myself for only doing Charlotte.
Asheville is in for a real treat I expect.
Please let us know how on time they start. Looking like right on time from the early reviews.
Wishing I could have also gone on to Charlotte.
I saw the GD in this very building, on the 1984 fall tour, when show tourbooks were sold....
Mountain Jim-

"10-5-1984 was my first show and GDTS rewarded me with a front row center ticket for tomorrow."
The infamous "guy on his knees masterbating under the scoreboard at halftime" show! If you need a great board of your first show drop me a line at tmel@udel.edu
He was about twenty feet to my left.
The bus came by and I am so glad I got on....
See everyone tomorrow night!
Thanks for the offer Tom, emotw.
10.4.84 A million years ago and a million miles away... What a sweet memory. I was dancing in the hall, so I didn't see the masterbeater, but
I do remember the UFO pulsating under the stage as they segued from China Cat> Rider.
Charlotte will be my one and only show. Hoping that we're getting setup for a TLEO, maybe Let it Grow. Probably see some songs from the Fla shows, Miami anyway. Love to see The Other One. They haven't done Help on the Way yet either (of couse I haven't seen the complete Set II list from Asheville yet so it's possible they finish with Help-slip-Franklins tonight).
The last and only time I was at this venue was when the quintet played on 4/20, what year was that '03? It's three kids later for me so hard to recall. But it was a great show. Great Help-Slip-Frankins that night.
Looks like it's wide open for a monster set list tonight. By my calculations the boys could grace us with some or all of the following.
Dark Star
St. Stephen
The Eleven
Playing In The Band
Uncle John's Band
Help On the Way ->
Slipknot ->
Franklin's Tower
Morning Dew
But I'm not picky..play anything...but make it HOT!!!
Can't wait to get to my 8th center seats tonight.
Peace to all.
Yes, my anticipation is at a fever pitch for tonight.
Some nugs I would like: Candyman, Peggy O, Let it Grow
Repeats: China>Rider, Terrapin
>>>But I'm not picky..play anything...but make it HOT!!!
What he said.
I wonder if my medulla oblangatta is still somewhere on the floor. I lost a sizable chunk of it on 10-5-84. They probably tossed it when they were cleaning up the naked guy's spooge.
FURTHUR!!
I'm feeling some real old school tonight.
Alligator
Caution
New Potato
Cold Rain and Snow
Mountains of the Moon
Maybe also some Cassidy or Let it Grow.
But like y'all I don't care what the setlist is as long as they play with passion, energy and inspiration, of which there seems to be more than ample supply this tour.
@JD: how's this venue for security? On the totally cool to real tight scale . . .
Well after further review, we just got a Cassidy and MOTM in ATL, so those are likely out.
Sticking to Alligator, Caution, New Potato.
Playin'? Uncle John's?
HERE IS A TREAT FOR ALL GOING TONIGHT
Take a look at these.
Hope you get all this and more tonight.

Two very interesting sequences in the Throckmorton rehearsal run:
I: Alligator, Next Time You See Me, Pride of Cucamonga, Money for Gasoline, Hurricane, Death Don't Have No Mercy, Silvio, Magnolia Mountain, Uncle John's Band, Good Lovin
II: Dark Star > Jam > Let it Grow > Dark Star, Attics of My Life
1/10/2010 142 Throckmorton Theatre, Mill Valley, CA
I: Here Comes Sunshine, Jack Straw, Till the Morning Comes, The Wheel > Althea, Throwing Stones
II: St. Stephen > The Eleven > Drums, King Solomon's Marbles, Unbroken Chain, Wharf Rat, Touch of Grey
I could see either II sequence happening, up to UBC which they just played . . . either would be mind melting.

Regarding security (and this is 25 years ago). The cops were facing the coliseum on the top of the hill, looking down and directing busts. Always best to be careful.
thanks Dave, this is Charlotte, NC after all. It's no Asheville . . .
Y'all have a great show tonight!
I was hoping for the Playing > Uncle John's last night, maybe you get that tonight. I kinda think they may save the Star for Hampton. (where I attended my first one at the 10/9/89 Warlocks run.)
I was thrilled with the jamming quality and emotional content last night.
Shit!
Portland Can't come quick enuf!
about to leave the blizzard of boone headed that way. wish me luck
I'm hoping for Brokedown Palace, Terrapin, Wang Dang Doodle, Shakedown Street. Just a few.
Can't wait!!! Only 3 more hours.
Anyone know if there have been shakedown streets going on before the show? This is my wife's first one, and wanted to break her in.
"Shakedown Streets?" Man, I hope you get a killer Tweezer, maybe a YEM...

Just wanted to voice my concern for the boy’s safety on the winter tour. Any reason the tour was booked in the middle of winter.
Who is taking care of them? I went to the rehearsal shows in Mill Valley, and not one time did I see anyone give any band member a bottle of water even playing for two hours without a brake.

Bob did the Donor Rap
Listened to the 2nd set on the stream. GRATE sound quality, started strong but seemed to be kind of a sleepy ending, although did seem very thoughtful and delicate, just not a barn burner....interested to hear the viewpoint of anyone who was there...
SWEET!!!!!!!!!!Cold Rain and Snow! Crazy Fingers!
fantastic show! lots of highlights - box of rain, cold rain and snow, here comes sunshine, come together, caboose. it was high energy all night, and everyone sounded great. we had excellent floor seats with plenty of dancing room. our little section was grooving out all night.
just drove home two hours tripping in a blizzard. surreal. it's good to be here.
3.800 feet?
LALZ
glad u had a grate time and go home safely~
OK, coffee check. Oatmeal, check. Trying to get my head wrapped around that show last night.
Let me offer my random thoughts about the show.
COLD in Charlotte, lot pre show was unbearable almost with the biting wind, but everybody dealt as best they could. Had a litte fun pre-show, thank God for the growler of Winter Ale from the Hunter Gatherer down in COLA. If you're ever down that way check them out, superb beer.
Headed in on time because they've been starting on time. Bojangles formerly known as Cricket arena formerly whatever is a big bowl of a hockey rink. The boys came on late as it was a long time filling and never filled to capacity. Lots of interesting pre show vibes flittering around the crowd. Mostly 'where is everybody at?!?' type stuff. Defintely NOT a sell out, I'd estimate the place 2/3 full. The rear floor didn't have any seats at all so only the forward orchestra section, and lots of room around the bowl.
First set was a smoker. Jam-HCS out of the gate superb with some beautiful playing all around. These guys are super tight, well rehearsed and mixed well. First time seeing John and I am VERY impressed. John feels the Garcia-Hunter ballads. He's not got the strongest voice but he sings with passion and love and the playing is out of this world. I think he was holding back a bit, he's got way more depth and range than he showed last night in glimpses.
Other impressions: Definitely a Bobby show, heavy on the Bob, but, I enjoyed it very much. He's still got his mojo and it shows. He is looking very svelte, hope it's just age and good living and not something of a health problem.
Sailor-Saint, what to say? 1984 flashback driftin' and dreamin. Bobby looks like a lost sailor. Yeah, there's a price for being free alright.
1st set I think was more intense, second set was sleepy a bit and contemplative, but oh so well played.
Overall impression: superb. Well rehearsed, tight, together, no fubars at all, heard none, good chemistry, young guys are stoked to be in there, love the percussionist he is clearly in the groove and STOKED to be up there feeling it.
I LOVE THIS BAND.
THats the thing about three show runs with driving inbetween (the old guys get tired near end of show). then best thing is that they will be well rested to play the best sounding venue in the world . HAMPTON COLISEUM.
Couple more thoughts. Harmonies were great- Cosmic Charlie, Doin' that Rag, New Potato, and especially China Doll. China Doll brought me to the brink of tears. So very well done, thank you boys for another real good time. Every one is precious now.
Appreciate the review. Sounds similar to the Asheville show in a lot of ways. It seems to me that they are saving the monster show for Hampton, probably brake out the Playing > Uncle Johns > Playing > Dark Star > Saint Stephen > 11 or something to that effect there.
the show started exactly the right way. what a beautiful little groove to get everybody moving, and then into sunshine...Bobby looked like he was in great condition...and sounded like it. Jeff on keys was a master. i'm a relative newbie, but the experience of this music and these guys is amazing and rewarding every time!
Hampton Coliseum was built in 1968 and 69 to open in 1970 .built for 9 million ,concert holds 13,800 (plus more with stupid ass gate crashers)The Greatful Dead played there 21 times 2 times as the warlocks and two times as bruse hornsby and friends .There first time there was may 4 1979 . they played as other names cause the city wanted a way for locals to get tickets instead of the traveling world not because the crowd was out of control like everybody thought. They also sold tickets the same day it was announced at venue only so the locals get em first .(my friend skiped school that day and drove 3 hrs to get tix for us .thankS Chad I'll never b able to repay you for my darkstar). I didnt have the first nights purple ticket so i tryed to finger one outside all day (hardest tick ever). two minuts befor show time i saw a car flashing a ticket toward me i ran in front of 40 or so people and got a ticket price - face and a ride to the show cause i was a mile down the roaD (I HAD GIVEN UP LOOKING .It was worth it , the played help slip frank wow .
any way Elvis played here twice , the stones recorded i cant get no satisfaction , and Phish preety much own this place.
oh ya you can rent the coliseum for only 5000 a day. Do i hear PARTY .
also the nickname for this place is the "Cosmic Cupcake" and the " Mothership" I like Cosmis Cupcake .
a neat thing about the design of this place is the seats dont touch the outer wall , they built the seats first then the outer wall . From the top rows you can see down into the hallways . thats why it sounds so good. no bouncing sound .
if youve never been here and your a avid concert attender thes place is a must . Hear that California. Make the trip.
ok 32 hrs till showtime .(first time for JK) cant wait .
SEE ya there
Yeah MJ I would say so, should be a barn burner up there. Crowd will be amped up too which always bodes well. Charlotte crowd was spread out and pretty mellow, well behaved. You get what you give . . .
Setlist indicating this was the worst show of the tour by a pretty wide margin...
...I'm surprised. My friends that were at Asheville thought they'd get a barn burner in Charlotte -- the pot of gold is probably in Hampton!!
2nd time I've seen "worst" mentioned with Charlotte.
OK, I'll go worst but in the sense of 'worst filet mignon out of the last five we've had'
Mellow, shoe-gazer type show from time to time. Mellow crowd plus 5th in a row pre day off = mellow show. Not bad, different.
Listen to it and get back to us . . .
Saw the show last night and listened to it on the drive back to Raleigh. Don't know anything about this worse show talk. This will be my one and only Furthur show this tour and I was deeply satisfied. Sound was great, the CD sounds good too. The first set was outstanding, highlight was the opening sequence - just amazing. For once I really enjoyed hearing Crazy Fingers post Garcia. I think that's because Bob doesn't confidently deliver on the lyrics but JK did the song much justice. Me and My Uncle was a total romp. Just listen to it, I'm telling you the first set is excellent.
True the second set was not super high energy. Lost Sailor maybe sets the low energy bar for an set II opener but it sounds great, the jam out of St of Circumstance is great and Doin' That Rag is awesome. Caution is also really good, much better than Greensboro last spring. I think that cold wind sucked a lot of energy out of the crowd. Everyone has a different opinion, but I know what I saw and heard. I had my once/twice a year GD vacation, now back to reality. I'm grateful for the show I saw.
Thanks JDH, for lending some good insight and perspective.
This definitely seems like a "driftin' and dreamin'" kind of show. Very well played, though, it feels more like '73 than '93, if you know what I mean.
Don't misunderstand me, I'm not saying the show was no good...maybe "least popular" or something along those lines would be a better choice of words. Ranked in the context of the current tour this show appears to be slotting in at the bottom, so far.
One of my friends who was there has the exact same opinion as JD. Another was a little less enthused...
I appreciate the optimism, my take has always been that "the very worst Grateful Dead show I ever saw was a damn good time"!
Where was this optimism during the Spring tour?
I'd like to chime in and say that the show didn't strike me as a barn burner like mentioned earlier but was well played. I especially liked the opening pair. I wasn't quite sure why they did the acapella Sunshine opening when John still picked out the original Garcia intro also but I suppose there's a reason they're on stage and not me. However you got wind of what it was, it was smoking. While I like the funky new twist on Maggie's Farm I'm not sold on the extended pace they set. Lyrics come too slowly delivered (like Lucy) to make it the rager that I like it to be. I lost a little momentum then. The end of the set was all nicely played and well received too. I gotta admit that it sounds funny to me to see Bob all grayed out and shit talking about what the "little girls" know what to do. Isn't he on Social Security now? I think that was also the fist taking on Foolish Heart that I've heard post Jerry. Pretty sure about that anyway. I really like the way John fits that spot and I think he does good justice to most of the material that I've heard him do. I'm with Judge on his voice not being the most powerful thing around but he does deliver with lots of feeling. I was on the railing of the stage on Tuesday and watching him was a treat.
This was my third show, ATL>AVL>CLT, and I suspect I had run a little low on steam at this point too. Mentally a little drained from chocolates the night before. I think I had drawn the conclusion somewhat earlier that I got my fill in Asheville, which I did, so anything that that I got last night was just going to be gravy. The second set was not the most rocking or high energy, except for the Rag and Caution and Cold Rain. I was not familiar with Nobody Girl but did enjoy it and the China Doll was out of sight. I was relieved to see that Cold Rain was just an ending blow-out and not an actual description of the outdoors. It was nice to haul back to Asheville and not be totally against Mother Nature as had been predicted.
Really liked the harmonies tonight too. The ladies especially added some nice stuff on Sunshine and Rag, but even when Phil and Bob did Charlie more or less alone it sounded nice, despite the fact we were in a giant concrete bowl.
They apperently ran short of time which is why Bob and Phil did the donor rap. They did not break for very long after Cold Rain before regrouping. My watch said 10:56. While Phil was still getting his axe on and twisting knobs Bob just looked at him and then us and said "hey, everybody be an organ donor because if somebody else hadn't we wouldn't be here tonight" or something to that affect. I thought it was kind of cute. I'm a sucker for the Phil stuff and Box was about the nicest way for me to end my 3 days with them. Love that shit every time.
I think we'll continue to see positive reviews from this. These guys really look to be having some fun together and obviously know how to get down for us. I'm eager to see who does get the brain-fuck Playing > Uncle Johns > Playing > Dark Star > Saint Stephen > 11 that MtnJim was talking about. Whoever gets it is in for a real treat too.
Liquidmike - really nice review, thanks!
I only wish I was able to do some more :-)
hey
I though the HC Sunshine was somewhat disjointed but the Crazy Fingers is perfect, really strong ending. As for this new arrangement of Maggie's Farm. OMG!! Bad, bad , bad... no fun at all they got to trash this blues version, plus no switching off vocals either. This would be a great opportunity to give the girls some shine time.
Will listen to the rest later today.
Then Bobby play Minglewood? Some thing never change LMAO
Putting the routine aside for a day, I skipped work, kissed the wife and boy goodbye, and stole the wife’s car for the ride to Charlotte. I’m busy and broke, so this will be my only show on this tour. Made one last attempt to drag some friends along, but their respective kid/work obligations meant that I was flying solo on this trip. Climbing out of the car in Charlotte, this southern-transplanted Yankee was greeted with probably my coldest taste of winter for the year. While Shakedown Court was open for business, the wind prevented me from hanging out too long. Earlier in the day I connected with an anonymous person who was kind enough to put his ticket in my name for pick up at will call. I made my way inside and within minutes had my free ticket in hand.
Entry into the venue was quick, uneventful and relaxed; there was lots of space at this place. No cattle-herds here. The Bojangles arena looks like a mini Houston Astrodome. Its old, but clean with no frills and strong bones. You could easily find yourself your own row somewhere, spreadout and take in the scenery while the smooth quiet sounds of the PA begin to get your attention.
As 7pm came and went, the crowd continued to make its way into the building, eventually reaching about 60% capacity. I parked myself on the extreme edge of Phils side in the seats half way up.
Around 740 the band took the stage and began to noodle into a soothing space for a few minutes before that space became Here Comes Sunshine. This was my first experience with JK and from the start, I could feel his enthusiasm and see his infectious smile. His voice was clear. The jammy parts of this song in between the lyrics had me floating away to my personal comfortable mental space in no time. The slowly moving lights splashed on the top of the dome helped with this process. Ahhhhh. Just like the old days. The hours driving in the car were well worth the opportunity to experience this peace of mind only found listening to this music live, in the presence of these people. The show could end now and I’d be satisfied.
The jam continued into Crazy Fingers and the energy of the crowd picked up a notch as I started to really enjoy JK’s efforts. While I maybe have only seen about a dozen shows post-Jerry, I knew right away that this combo, thanks to JK, was my favorite. The bouncing energy of Russo was also adding to the spirit.
The jam swung around and now the country western vibe moved in! The place was shuffling, Saguaro cactuses sprouted up in the aisles. I saw a tumbleweed go by. The song built into Me and My Uncle. From my spot, I thought Bob’s vocals were a bit muted, so I started on my mission around the arena to find the sweet sounding spot. Weaving in and out of the smiling faces in the aisles, I quickly noticed that the sound picked up depth once I was parallel to the soundboard. I stopped by the back of the arena for the rest of the song and then moved to the back, staked out my own row to shake a bit and then moved on to JK’s side even with the soundboard. I really loved all the space to roam around in the arena. The lack of commotion, the lack of a sellout, makes it feel as if this wonderful world we know as a dead show is now under the radar in America. Only the strange remain. Just as I like it! Next was Maggies Farm, much like the versions I’ve heard ratdog play. Not overwhelmed, but it grew on me.
Candyman was awesome! I though JK played this so strongly. That man definitely has some candy to share. When we reached the “hand me my old-guitar” lyric it made me think of Jerry and then it dawned on me that the old guitar does not solely belong to Jerry. It’s OUR guitar. More and more I’m starting to see how this music and community we love is not owned by anyone in particular. It satisfies me to fantasize that this music, this vibe, this scene could continue ad-infinitum. The thought that generations to come, the unborn even, could experience this wilderness makes me feel content. This is still one of the best adventures from reality in on the planet. It was cool to see teenagers in the crowd wigging out on the wide-open floor behind the soundboard.
Minglewood. To be honest, I have a love-hate relationship with Minglewood dating back to my first days with the Dead. Not that its bad, I just was always ready to hear something else. Funny thing for me is that while Im not a minglewood lover, I realize everytime it appeared for me at a show, the show was always great. Maybe the Minglewood wasn’t so hot, but the show was. But, halfway through this Bobby song, it hit me- Phil was tearing it up. I slipped into the zone and could see Phils fingers make this building hum. You can only get this sound in a big cavernous building. The sound board people got it right. The rest of the night Phils vibrations soothed my feet. So awesome, I miss it just typing this.
I always loved Foolish Heart. To this day I’m still trying to figure out who the foolish hearts are in my life. Or am I the foolish heart? Either way, deep in my mind I made a decision about some fools I know and how they cause me pain and often make me hurt. Thanks Foolish Heart-for reaffirming my mission in life and to do my part to search the headwaters and the estuaries of my rivers.
Cosmic Charlie was the first taste of some flavor that would continue to build through the night. These older songs, (Charlie, Doin that Rag, New Potato) much of which I didn’t hear so much during my late 80’s and early 90’s experience (except for recordings) are not ones that I would say are at the top of my personal dead favorites list. However, after tonight I’ve evolved quite a bit. They were so entertaining. And JK’s guitar work had that 60’s Jerry surf-guitar feel. And it was so loud and clear and played with such force. I’ve got a bunch of new favorites.
During the set break, I made the switch from beer to lemonade as I started to think responsibly about my late night 3.5 hour ride home by myself. Beck’s Sea Change album played quietly over the PA in the background. How did they know that’s one of my favorites?
On the way back to my seat with lemonade in hand, the quiet breezes of Lost Sailor began to fill the air. The contemplative mood was served up for our second set. Launching out of the drifting dreams of Sailor, Saint of Circumstance emerged with light and direction. This was one of my favorites of the night. Several times they approached that spot where the jam would start to swirl, they would tease you with that feeling of floating to oblivion. It was just right there, but it seemed Bobby would pull JK and all of us back onto the ground. Perfect contrast!
Doin that Rag was sweet. Come together was nice and easy. Those pulsating dots on the screen behind the band put me in an even deeper mellow as I hunkered down comfortably in my seat for most of the Caution and Potato. Next, Nobody Girl is a song I am not familiar with. Another good effort by JK even though it brought the energy way down. Not a bad thing, because it set us up nicely for the delicate and placid China Doll. I soaked up every harpsichordy hurdy gurdy type sound. Just as I was drifting off to sleep, the driving pulse of Cold Rain and Snow emerged. Of course! I overheard several conversations during the night from people describing how they just made it out of the path of the blizzard to make it to Charlotte. CRandS had everyone back up and singing…this a-waaaayyyyyaaaaaayyyyyyaaaayyyayayyy… Oh yeah, sometime during the set I noticed that people (including the cops) began to take interest in the rafters. I started to see what the fuss was about- there were people up there! Someone found the right door!
Lastly, there came the Box of Rain to complete a solid soft sleepy second set. No, not a high energy night. But perfect for all the lost sailors in an old outdated building on a cold Wednesday night in February. It couldn’t have been better.
I bundled up in preparation for the tundra outside but pleasantly found that the wind had died down. Shakedown was much more enjoyable. I got a slice of pizza from the guy with the full size kitchen oven out the back of his beat up van. Topped that off with the Morning Dew shirt that I’ve been meaning to buy since my last show at Portland Meadows in 95. Hopped in the car and turned on Sirius 32. Notice how dead recordings sound even better right after you come out of a show? Jammed all the way down the road until I reached home at 4am. I even sat in the car in the driveway for a while to hear the last notes of a beautiful Jerry balad that I now cant remember.
Here I am back to work (hardly). Its nice to know that the circus lives and is moving down the road to a city near you. Attending these events with such great music and adventurous people is one of the greatest pleasures of my life and I feel blessed that I still have the opportunity to have the experience. I hope they keep going with this line-up. So full of energy and fun. Get away from it all and be your “cool” self as my friend says. The opportunity is there for the taking.
Thanks Uncle Fester I really enjoyed your take on the Charlotte festivities. Appreciate the effort to tell us how it was for you. I really wish I could telaport into the mothership for tonight!
{{clapping}}
Wonderful review Uncle Fester. You captured the mood and essence of that show perfectly IMHO.
damn Uncle Fester, I second that emotion...
Well, I just have to say, this was the first time seeing the boys since 89. When I found out they were coming to Charlotte, I convinced my wife that we NEEDED to go (tried to drag my brother and his wife, but he didn't have as much luck). She is not a fan. She tolerates them. That is all.
I had a list in my head, I wanted that barn burner show (damn near the one Hampton got), but it was around Maggies Farm, that I realized that this was my wife's show. Not mine. She fell in love that evening. She looked at me and said, now I understand why this is all you listen to. She even got puked on during Here Comes Sunshine, LOL. For me, them pulling out all of those Pig-Pen songs, is amazing. I fell in love with Caution that night. I had never seen it, or heard it like that. Hell when they started playing it, I couldn't figure out what it was, someone told me it was alligator. But from Come Together till Cold Rain and Snow. That was what I came for.
That was the magic of the night. The Nobody's Girl, was fabulous. I've listened to the show 4 or 5 times since, and that Caution. WOW. I was sitting on JK's side the entire night, and I couldn't see anybody's faces, but it looked like they were having fun. After Cosmic Charlie, Bob looked just giddy telling us not to go home to mom.
The whole night was just so nice and mellow.
Just what I needed, and I had no idea.
I can't wait till the next tour. I need to go MORE. That's the only show I get for this tour. But my wife and I are planning on at least two for the next tour. I have to shut down my damn business and run away from town to see them, but it's worth it.
It was nice not being packed into there too. There was plenty of room to breathe.
I just pulled in home from an errand and was listening to the Caution, it's excellent.
