Home of the return of Box of Rain and Dark Star. A very special place indeed.

Hampton is in for a SERIOUS treat. First five in the bag, a day off to rest, warmed up, finely tuned, like a swiss watch indeed!

Stupid life getting in the way of touring :-(.

I waited 15 years for that Dark Star.... Felt like I had bagged the Holy Grail at the end of that Formerly The Warlocks 89 run.

Also the home of my one GD birthday show, 03/06/92, when Bruce played full Happy Birthday (for some one, I don't know who) during set 1 tuning.

I wish I could be there for this one - expecting a Playing > Uncle John's band > Playing Reprise and/or a Dark Star > Saint Stephen > 11 > Morning Dew - none of which have been played yet this tour.

The sound in the exact center of this room is magical. Sacred ground for me for so many GD, JGB, and Phish shows.

Hampton Coliseum - "COSMIC CUPCAKE"
what a nickname I wonder if some deadhead coined that after a cosmic night themselves at the wonderful Hampton Coliseum .

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By mike zoidatrap (Mstrapasso) on Thursday, February 11, 2010 - 02:12 pm: Edit Post

The Dead plyed their 21 times including the warlock 2 shows and 2 shows billed" Bruse Hornsby and Friends" . also two JGB shows . Ive been blessed with nine times . id have to say the best show was the warlock second night (The green ticket). When they played Darkstar wow The Cosmic Cupcake was sure flying high that night .If you ever heard the aud. tape some guy screams like a girl so loud for so long thats all you hear .But I must say every time i here the dude girl scream i get the chills so big it remindes me of that moment . Thanks dudegirl.
Then if that wasnt enough they played an attics of my life which had as much energy as the darkstar even more (hadent layed that one in over 1000 shows) .
Cant wait to walk the path through shakedown passed the fountian then KABOOOOOOOOOOM
IEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Saw Wallingford in Dec and had a great time. Listened to Miami, Orlando, and Charlotte and this band has been practicing. I like it! Can't wait for Manchester and Amherst next week.

Wish I could be there tonight. March 27, 1988, is the best GD show I ever saw and HR Coliseum the top indoor venue. I want to say to my sisters and my brothers in Hampton tonight, have a great time. Morning Dew is on me.

My one Hampton experience was the first show on tour again after Jerry's coma vacation when he started dancing during the 2nd set opener combo of Sugar Mag>Scarlet. Have fun there. I'm out here waiting for the snowball to roll into Buffalo :-)

I wonder how moving the stage like that will affect the (usually) magical sound in that room?

Envious.

here we go!
Just a song of Gomorrah, I wonder what they did there
Must've been a bad thing to get shot down for
I wonder how they blew it up or if they burned it down
Get out, get out Mr. Lot and don't you turn around.

Who gave you your orders, someone from the sky
I heard a voice inside my head in the desert wind so dry
I heard a voice tellin' me to flee the very same voice I always believe
Say alot of trouble comin', but it don't have to come to you
I'm telling you so you can tell the rest what you've been through.

But don't you turn around, no, don't look after you
It's not your business how it's done, you're lucky to get through
You're a good upstanding man, a credit to the flock
But if you don't face straight ahead you could not take the shock
Blew the city off the man, left nothing there but fire
The wife of Lot got turned to salt, because she looked behind her.

Come on john.................

OK, just drove home from the show and it was great! The setlist was as superb as everyone has already commented. Yes, Bobby blew the lyrics in Memphis, but the rest of the show was great. There was a point in either Shakedown or Miracle where John just had a solo poised to rip and he kept looking to Bob for the nod to "GO" - and when he finally got it the solo came out like a wave from a dam - Damn!

Great crowd and a very small parking lot scene, but pretty intense considering it was dark and about 35 degrees. The local police were very cool and almost non-existent. I don't think I saw any outside, and maybe only a few inside.

Lots of friendly folks. Met some guys who had been to every Hampton show. A very fun night and I wish I could be in Fairfax tomorrow.

The line for the CDs moved pretty quickly and they also had several other shows for sale from earlier in the tour.

Going to bed to dream of this great show ...

.... and we bid you goodnight!

Wow really neat to be back in Hampton after 20 years . The parking lot lost half of itself in those twenty years. and it looked kind of old .I guess thats what happens to us .There is now a hotel in the space where the parking lot was . It kinda dwarfed the colliseum .
Anyway inside was just as it was 20 years ago .
same old everything .
The big difference with the setup was the stage was almost 40 yardline ish .I was sitting 12 row up on side (with a big groupe so I didnt move around )
The show started 717 SHAKEDOWN---- BOOM!! 17 minutes long rocken unh.
Then MIRACLE kind a slow but still wow!! 6 min
Till the morning comes 5 min rocked unh!!!Then
uh .. Memphis tele prom blues . ya..11 minuts
(youll read about it) is all good
Then Direwolf !!!5 min. Man I love Hampton
Ill stop it was great Really Great
man when more people find out !!!
Oh I do think they did the colliseum a injustice by moving stage foward . I do believe it hurt the quality of sound the building provides for free . (probly sounded great on floor though).
Goodnight see ya tommarow
oh ya i heard parking is going to b fun cause big snow .
no more ohs Goodbye

Interesting about the stage being pushed up.
I've been expecting the same for Portland, but can not get any confirmation from the promoter or box office. They did it that way for Panic and are advertising it that way for an upcoming nickleback show. Hampton regularly seats what, 10,000? Portland regularly seats 12K (Largest venue on the tour) but I don't see how they'd sell enough tix to do that (thank God we're back under the radar!)

Pushing up the stage would make sense as it brings these larger venues into line with the average size on the tour.

Anyway, Thanks for posting that observation!
It's helpful.

John "blew" the lyrics twice last night:

1) singing "Lady in velvet" when it should have been "glass hand dissolving" in Dark Star

2) repeating "going where the climate suits my clothes" instead of "going where the water tastes like wine"

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Chuck Reed Superstar (Chuckster) on Saturday, February 13, 2010 - 04:32 pm: Edit Post

he repeated the "climate" verse after Bob had just sung it instead of either "water" or "going where the chilly winds don't blow"; regardless of how you want to order them, he sang "climate" verse instead of either of the other two

so,in other words...he's a "perfect fit" for the "just exactly perfect brothers band" or "I can't think of a place that's more perfect, for a person as perfect as (you)"...

The band has always flubbed lyrics..we all know that...But Bob is at a historical low point for flubbing. Ive never heard him flub so many songs in my life. Plus he's been dyslectic his entire career, its nothing new. Maybe he should concentrate on singing his own songs and leave the Jerry songs alone.

IT is still happening....

Tomorrow when I hit the turnstyle at Barton Hall, I will say to me..."Dam, IT is still happening...

Well, I had never been to the Hampton b4 so I was eager to see what all the fuss was about. I got there with really no traffic delays to speak of so that was a relief. The little space ship is fit snuggly right off the freeway and was quite easy to get to. It was a chilly night and The lot scene was fairly mellow with people doing a little drinking and hangin out, In fact I heard a drunken jackass exclaim that it was the weakest Hampton lot he'd ever seen a couple times. It looked like the main Shakedown was taking place in the convention center parking lot across the street, So I filled a big gulp cup with 220z of Terrapin IPA and set out to see the madness. Quite the market place, not very much party favor vending but you could get what you were looking for. Tons of great Tye dyes, glass pieces, beer, and the best lot food I'd ever seen. I had a great philly sausage cheese-steak sandwich after the show when they were shootin off fireworks, but I'm gettin ahead of myself.

So after going back to the car for a bowl and downing my beer, I figured I'd go and try and get a good spot on the floor, which was easy cause no one was in rush. The whole scene was very chill: the crowd, the lot, the venue staff.

Man what a cozy coliseum, not very big and very comfortable. Like a big padded room for trippers to bounce off the walls. Truly an ideal indoor venue for an 80's GD or 90's Phish. I found a spot about 10ft from the rail, directly in front of Phil, where I chatted with some folks and watched it slowly fill in. The band started about 7:20, nice Shakedown opener. Man, did it feel good to see Phil again. I'm sorry to say it's been a few years since I've seen him in person but I was reminded instantly of how much he rules. He is in a whole other class musicianship wise than the rest of the band: Subtle, powerful, intricate, just great! No the Ritter's and the 4X10's aren't as cool as the Modulus and the 15's but whatever, Jerry's gone and a Q reunion is unlikely so we can either live in the past or embrace the future.

On to the show, jams in shakedown got pretty out there. Jay lane bounced up and down like he was on E the entire performance, Russo looked like he was having a great time. The Miracle intro was extended, all eyes on Bob. I don't know why Bob delays and pauses so much, whether it's mistakes, senility, or it's just his thang but it's weird and pretty old hat at this point. Phil and the rest of Band seem to have grown accustomed to it and shake it off consistently throughout the show. Till the morning comes, nice gesture but a far cry from when the Q first broke it out at the Warfield in 02' but whadda ya gonna do. I had to urinate pretty much from the beginning of the show, remember the 22oz? I didn't want to lose my spot on the floor but listening to Bob do this version of Memphis on an empty bladder would have been trying enough, off to the restroom.

Interesting thing about the Hampton, or at least tonight, after the show started ushers stopped checking tickets so 2/3 of the crowd ended up on the floor. Not wanting be stuck in Bob's Mobile meant I'd have quite a time getting back close to where I was so I spent most of Dire Wolf, Picasso, and Big Railroad making my way slowly through the crowd. They were all played pretty well, even Picasso which I barely recognized but new the Zone would be having a field day balking at. People was having fun dancing, puffin and carryn' on. Best version of 2 Djinn I'd ever heard, not like I've heard it more than a couple times, I don't see Rat Dog but Furthur gave it a good go and the jamming was pretty decent. By the time the long set break was over I had made it back to my original place and it was packed. Scarlet was a good vibe opener but it didn't look like Phil was puttin too much effort into it. West L.A started kind of slow, but Bob signaled for it to go even slower, and while Phil looked a bit perplexed at this he tried to gel with the drummers who adapted well to the crawling tempo, lots of long Bob pauses, good Keys solo. Mason's got the tempo up again and the jammin was alright but once again far cry from the Q versions.

Then things got weird, John K. started some pretty abstract dissonant noodling and all members of the band start answering slowly and obscurely, very without a net, the tension was palpable and the mood dark. A few folks left the floor, the free formness a little too much to take, even more thought about it, this was no longer a dance party, this was Dark Star. By the time the song and groove hit the release was powerful and sublime, probably the most substantial version of the song I'd ever seen in person. Verses were shared in the order of Phil, John, Bob and sang fairly well. The Fantasy was ok, nice JK guitar work.

Then came the surprise of King Solomon's. Transitions within the song were occasionally ruff but it pressed on spurred by the compositions sheer energy, Phil trying lead and kicking some pretty good ass, Bob doing a good job looked to be following the progressions carefully on a teleprompter. Slowin down again really hard for a long intro into Day's, Bob performed it with as much class and dignity as he could muster and the band performed it very well, the dynamic swells and crescendos were quite stirring, but much of the crowd seemed relatively indifferent to the quieter moments.

Holy shit it's Viola, stompin and ragin, building and breaking it was the real deal. Then more creepy slow dissonant jamming, during which Lane played some type of spool of spokes with a violin bow making a trippy shinnging sound: Time to finish Dark Star, John and Bob sang the same verse. Followed by a Poor transition and semi false start into GDTRFB "led" by Phil but once they got into it, sounded ok and the crowd was happy to dance again and hear them sweet Jerry lyics. After a respectfully received donor rap came a near perfectly performed acapella Bid you Goodnight, the harmonies were very rich, it was beautiful and the night was done.

In conclusion this is a pretty interesting band. There were mistakes by every member throughout the night, it's a very loose environment on stage and there are frequent ups and downs. I felt bad for the female vocalists, it was great to have them but they hardly sang at all the whole night and just had to sit there or stand sway during all the spacey jammin. My favorite parts were the jamming within the songs, tight transitions and firm song structure executions are rare, but to me one thing's for sure: Bob and Phil are still the weirdest guys at this level of popularity in business and there is nothing like a Grateful Dead concert.

ok here we go...i was probably the guy drinking in the parking lot and saying things....but they werent derogatory at all....i was glad it wasnt mass confusion and pushing and shoving...i for one have always loved hampton and always went having gone to college in virginia...i was shocked at how few people were actually there...very late arriving crowd and i agree with review above best food in the lot and tie dyes...some guy made the best french bread pizza i ever had...i was on the phone to a friend in nj and he asked to describe the scene and i said theres more cars in the employee lot than at shakedown street and it was cold...so cold in fact i bought hat and gloves in the lot...my only complaint was there was nowhere to piss and the cold had you going every other beer...and i totally agree again with above...i didnt even see a cop anywhere...complete contrast to asheville and charlotte....asheville cops made their presence known but kept cool...charlotte on the other hand security got snippy quite a few times ....in my opinion and i went to all 3 it went by far and away ashevile number 1...just the setting of a high school gym made it the best let alone the music then charlotte 2 and hampton...but hampton definately had parking lot #1 hands down.....see you all at radio city

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Tony Jordan (Tonyj42) on Friday, February 19, 2010 - 02:31 pm: Edit Post

I am a veteran of about 100 Grateful Dead (60 - 70 shows) and post-Jerry Dead shows (not saying that to impress, but just so you know where I'm coming from) and I'm usually the one in the group who will always try to put a silver lining on a show, even if it wasn't the greatest. But it was hard to find a lot positive in this show. The show was plagued by bad sound in the first set, poor song selection that seemed to bring the energy down every time things got going, a lack of decisivness among band members, and poor flow and segues between songs.

The early reviews for this lineup had been good to great so I was looking forward to a good show. The stage setup had the stage just beyond center ice, cutting the Coliseum in half and promising an intimate show. The floor was full and the seats were maybe 2/3 full, which was good because everyone had room to spread out. We were about a section away from the stage and right on the rail overlooking the floor.

The show opened with "Shakedown Street" and though well-played, the sound was lacking low-end and volume and this would continue through most of the first set. The band segued into "I Need a Miracle" and while the tempo was a tad slower than normal, this still was a pretty good start, though the crowd didn't seem quite into the sing-along parts of the song as I thought they could have been. The band then chugged along into the rarely played "Till The Morning Comes" and this was going well, with good energy and some good playing from John Kadlecik until they missed the vocal cue to come back in after the instrumental mid-section of the song. This seemed to throw things off for the rest of the song.

Weir then took us into Dylan's "Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again", which I thought was a good choice as this is fairly straight forward musically and would allow the band to get its footing back. But the lyrics, oh the lyrics. Bob flubbed the lyrics worse than I'd ever seen, first one verse, then a second, then a third. It went the usual kind of funny (ha, ha, Bob messed up, just like ol' times) to painful. At one point I was thinking they should just end the song prematurely and move on. Add to this that Bob was thrown by the whole thing and didn't put his usual rocking emphasis on the ends of the verses and the energy was pretty much out of the room at this point.

The band went into "Dire Wolf" , then "Picasso Moon" and "Big Railroad Blues". All were well-played but unremarkable and never seemed to ignite. During "Picasso", I went out to the concourse to fill my water bottle and ran into a woman I had met in the parking lot prior to the show. She said that she and her husband had been moving around to different spots on the floor and in the stands looking for some crowd energy but it was hard to find.

The set closed with "Two Djinn". The sound finally got right during this song and this was the highlight of the first set with the band locking in to a nice groove. With the sound back and things seemingly right again with the band, I entered the set break enthusiastic that the band would come back with a nice second set and leave us forgetting the miscues of the first.

And that seemed to be as they started the second set with a very nice "Scarlet Begonias" that got the refreshed crowd moving. The band then moved into "West LA Fadeaway". I found this a little surprising. While I usually like to see some shakeups to song pairings that have been around for a long time, I thought that after the shaky first set, the band probably should have played it straight and stuck with the tried and true. But I like "West LA" so I figured "let's see where this goes".

As they were meandering into the song, Weir motioned to the band to watch him and I wondered what he was up to. Turns out he was calling an audible with the lyrics and decided to insert an extra bar in between lyrics and between verse and chorus. I'm all for some improvisation and actually hope for it, but more in the instrumental sections. If you are going to change up the basic arrangement of the song, couldn't you have practiced it once or twice in soundcheck? The audible threw the band off for the first 2/3 of the song, threw the audience off who tried to sing along with the chorus the first time it came around and combined with the world-weary delivery Bob gave the chorus (I don't know if this an intentional reading of the song or if Bob was just weary), robbed the song of its tension (verse) / release (chorus) dynamic and took the energy out the room again.

Next the band went into "Mason's Children", that again was well-played but unremarkable but started to bring the energy level up again. The band pretty much stopped almost cold after that and languidly went into "Dark Star". While a big fan of "Dark Star", I thought this was poorly placed and the segue into "Dark Star" was less of a jam and more of a plunk the strings and stare at each other wondering who will start the song, again losing the energy in the room.

Phil finally stepped up with bass line opening and once they did get the "Dark Star" going, it was very well done and the jam really was developing into something nice and funky. I thought they might run this right into a "Going Down the Road Feeling Bad" or something else that would take the energy they had just developed and channel it into something danceable. But the jam seemed to almost stop dead again and they went into Traffic's "Dear Mr. Fantasy". At this point, it seemed they were abandoning all sense of flow and just trying to get to the songs that were on their set list. I believe I turned to my friend, Angie, at this point and said, "Its like they keep putting men on base and then grounding weakly out to the pitcher to end the inning."

After "Fantasy", there was a brief Drums segment that segued right into the highlight of the night, "King Solomon's Marbles". This rhythmically intricate instrumental was tight, the band was crackling with energy with the drummers leading the way. I turned to my friend, Phil, and said, "Where the hell has this band been all night?" At this point, hopes rose again that they would pull off a turnaround and really end the show strong.

KSM ends and Bob and Phil have a conversation that went: Bob says something. Phil shakes his head "no". Bob says something. Phil throws his arms up and turns his back to Bob to get a drink and play with his bass cabinet. I don't know who "won" the argument, but the audience lost as the band goes into the slowest of all Dead ballads, "Days Between". "Days" was always iffy when the Dead played it depending on how much energy Jerry had that night. This version seemed even more stripped down and slow than usual and that hissing sound you heard was the energy escaping from the room once again like air out of a balloon. At this point I had to go outside for a smoke break even though I don't smoke but just to get some fresh air on the balcony and wonder what the hell was happening.

After "Days", they went into the blues stomp "Viola Lee Blues" which was highlighted by keys work from Jeff Chimenti, who was on for the whole second set especially "Mr. Fantasy" and "Mason's Children". This was good, but again never completely ignited, and again, just when some energy seemed to be coming back, they pulled the plug, slowed it down and went back to "Dark Star". The "Going Down the Road Feelin' Bad" (which pretty much summed up the show nicely) was too little, too late and I was out the door before the a cappella (again, can't seem to rock two songs in a row tonight) encore, "And We Bid You Goodnight".

tough bobby night. listening to the boards,Bobby was painful on the mic this night, crapping on memphis blues and taking West LA from JK. Also, Two Dijjn is junk: shelve it. that being said, BW played well and the second set was massive, even as BW brought it down twice (West LA and Days Btwn) by singing JG tunes much better left for JK

Still listening to the soundboards. The Shakedown opening was (and is) great. This was the first show I had been to in ages and I booked the two Chicago shows after finding out again just how good the music is.
