I believe it will be a Sunday Samson.Maybe a They Love Each Other for Valentine's Day.I really don't care what they play as long as it's played well.I know i'm gonna have a great time!!!
Hey, Bob Hoffman. Have a good time tonight! Here's to you and your fellow Hall attendees feeling the goosebumps, chills up the spine, etc. A silent prayer has been made for your benefactor. How nice of her to give the ticket to you.
Manchester & Amherst less than a week away! Very psyched to go Furthur soon!
All I can say is, I was at last nights Va show..AWESOME!! If you can go ...GO...A lineup you have to see and hear...
Hello LB. I see that you are posting again. You can't wait to go to the show? Or you can't wait to listen to the live Sirius feed (sign up for free 7 day trial folks)? I know that you will enjoy the show either way. I hope to see you at Radio City and/or AC.

Maybe OMSN opener since they skipped it last night. Encore of Sampson. Praying for a Dew.
Bobby's probably gonna pull out "My Funny Valentine" again
Barton Hall, Ithaca, NY 2/14/10 Set 1:
.....
If the crowd started clapping the Not Fade Away beat at the open, maybe there'd be a spontaneous improvised set opener and they could get it out of the way early....great way to start with a rocker.
Just a suggestion....
Let's get IT up!
Are they doing the 2/14/70 setlist tonight?
samson,TLEO,UJB,DEW,RAT, WHO KNOWS SHOULD BE A GREAT SHOW

they haven't hit the stage yet, I don't believe...
Still listening?
they just finished a killer mason's> caution. the broadcast is beginning now.
Ahhh. Here it is.
Last Barton Hall concert for the Grateful Dead was 1981. Phil and Friends played there 11/15/99.

midnight hour!
"The police plan to increase patrols and take other security measures around campus in response to the expected crowds this weekend, CUPD Chief Kathy Zoner said."
“Generally, it’s a pretty large crowd that follows the band around,” Zoner said. “We had a big problem with trespass and illegal activities the last time [Grateful Dead band members] came to campus.”
The CU Police Chief's last name is ZONER. How poetic is that?
Chinese New Year?
SWEET!

What could be better than live Dead/Furthur cranking on my home system while I sit in my easy chair drinking a brew and reminiscing about that dynamite 77 tour and enjoying the present sound that is the soundtrack of my life! I've gone to heaven!
Phil brings the love. If you don't feel his Peggies, you ain't got a heart.
Looks Like Rain
I love Bob Weir.
"run me 'round, make me hurt again and again..."
i was watching those pics of Peggy-O as the song was played live. unreal.
snowing?
LL Rain.......nice love-lost song for V-day....
tonights gonna be a good night ;)
loving the songs and jams so far. Even the singing is on spot.
Cough it up, Bobby!
One really would have to be a curmudgeon to not be celebrating Mr. Weir at this point...
"rain, rain, go away..."
Looks like rain for those of you not listening to sirius
Looks Like Rain
Bobby freakout!

sugaree
one of my all-time fav's.
Only song i fell asleep standing up listening to em play it live. Put me such in a calm, serene zone.
The boys are meshing up beautifully on this one!
Sugaree
Nice ALL the way around

Chimenti is on fire! He's perfect for this band.

Finally - they let John sing Sugaree on his own!!
audio, pictures, chatting, FREE....what more can you want ?
This is SICK.
Go, Johnny, go!!!!!!!
El Paso is the saddest (and stupidest) love song they got. a tight eP would make a great closer. with this band as they're playing now
stereo getting louder
nice to hear JK play
I think they did the JBG last night just for JK...
EPIC!
This Sugaree is on fire!

I'd love to see a high resolution, full-size shot of that last photo with all the mics. NICE.
yeah capn, saw them in hampton , they really sound good
Joe turn up the volume knob

Bobby havin fun with the Good Lovin...I love how there are echoes in these songs from the 70s, 80s, AND 90s!
@capnslappy - one of them is Garcia's daughter...
No idea, Joe... I piped in during Tenn. Jed and it's been working flawlessly on my end.
*knock on wood*
Good Lovin'!
Who needs it?
I need it!!!
Holy fuck it looks like the clam diggers Bobby wore in 77
>>>@capnslappy - one of them is Garcia's daughter...
Incorrect. Completely false. She is not related to Jerry. Stop spreading this BS.
LOGL!
rob these are phenomenal!
Love to you TRob...from Baltimore!!
sirius sucks dick the shit wont play
Who ever they are, can't wait to hear 'em tomorrow in Bethlehem. Thanks!

Folks with Sirius (and maybe serious) problems, what browser are u using?
>>> anyone know how to get the sream to work on the computer >>>
Not tonight, but if you want to hook your computer to any set of speakers cheap and easily, Google "Logitech xmod wireless" and buy the friggin' thing. It's just amazing, such a life changer. You plug one end into the computer w/ USB, plug another box into any set of powered speakers in the house - up to 4 sets can be run as zones! - and presto, anything on your computer is on those speakers. It's friggin' incredible, I got it from Amazon for 40 bucks w/ free shipping. Can't believe it's that easy, just plug it in and go.
don't go away..we'll be back in a few minutes...
safari
Sweet first seet. well put together & played. so whats the predictions for second set?

I'm using Firefox 3.5.7 on Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic release) it's it sounds great.
@Jeff H (Jeffh)
Sure looks like him.. ;)
Works fine on Firefox. Try that USstream proxy if you can't get it going. URL above in one of my other posts.
Singers are NOT related to JG.
Amazing how the rumors spread. That's all I've heard for 2 days. Point taken.
get her going for later T
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/destination-unknown
Fine first set....splendid.
Grate gift!
Love IT!
samson duprees 1/2step deal
>>> Sunshine Garcia Baker..Ken Kesey And MTN girl's daughter
Not true. Sunshine Garcia Becker is not related to Kesey, Mountain Girl or Jerry. She's a wonderful singer on her own.
The lads sound chipper, don't they though?
I think thy will play The Other One
It is a true love song
sirius won't work unless you click on the temp/blocked pop up banner
And I'm thinking about the guy still chasin' the bus - upset last night because as he put it "tomorrow is gonna be weak!"
Did I mention he's still chasin' the bus? All in good time my pretty, all in good time.
Be in and out cooking for the family - But I would be remiss if I didn't say to Fitz...
"because she looked behind her..."
>>>Sunshine Garcia Baker..Ken Kesey And MTN girl's daughter
Wrong again. Sunshine Baker is not related to neither Jerry nor Ken Kesey. Completely different person.
yea, gotta get that Sunday Samson in there....
"To Lay Me Down" with JK singin' ? that'd be the shit.
"Two Souls in Communion"
- that would be INCREDIBLE to rip out for V-day, LOL. could this band pull it off?
wishful thinking, can alwayz hope!!
Man - I'd pay a dollar to see these guys on Marvin's Mountaintop.
Ok TWO dollars...
come on ed they could do it
>Wrong again. Sunshine Baker is not related to neither Jerry nor Ken Kesey. Completely different person.<
Ok if you say so...and who are you?
T ya there
how'd the shower go
?
This beats the figure skating
Hot shower with some new soap called dancing fool
Patculia and Sadlewood
smells great
Sunshine Becker - not Baker
LOL - thats for sure Jim! wife & daughter were watchin that.....
yeah I bet it does
menagitrois
Yeah Sampson and Man Smart Women Smarter in the next set wouldn't shock me.
Up here in Buffalo...looking forward to Wed night
If I had my way!!
(((the emotional authenticity of JK)))
Be well, LC!
>>>Sunshine Becker - not Baker
You are correct.
(((the emotional authenticity of JK)))
Yeah, but the band IS reacting. So are the fans. If it's not authentic, what is?
on mozilla the Sirius pop up didnt come up. I switched to internet explorer and it popped right up, clicked thereon, and music to my ears! Try that
that emotional authenticity comment did sum it up well....
Totally, Ed.
your 1st set setlist:

Startin to warm up a bit
John K is da man, case closed !!
not a wolf but surley a tiger
Worst Peaceful Valley by Ryan Adams. Ick.
ick? yuck!
what?!
JK sings it better than Ryan!
That said, great to see Pinkie out there where it should be (prominent in the mix). God, I really love Bob Weir's playing.
NIce Ryan choice!

it is a great call. i don't get the wining. this is excellent.
You had to know it was coming - they played it twice in Mill Valley...here comes the segue...
as I said in other folder..I so could see Jer singing this..gives me chills

Ashes and Glass
throwin up?
I kind of liked that messy transition. Wish I could've seen their faces.
Ashes & Glass???
For those having trouble with Sirius stream...I had the same problem with it in Chrome but firefox it works wonderful.
This is a GREAT evening.
hmmmmmm??????!
A song my sister used to play all the time
Cuts like a knife
If I hear that song again I would get goosebumps
But not in a good way
Dude, if Dew isn't played next...
Has an interviewer ever asked Bobby about inserting the extra measures between verses on some songs...is it to keep it interesting for him?
Ashes sounds better the normal way (which they are doing now)

Bobby traded his old nutters for Boy George pants???
I likee Evening Moods and would recommend it for anyone that doesn't have it
Half the crowd goes to take piss or get a drink now
the crowd goes wild.........actually yet ANOTHER weir led head to the bathrooms song
The other half of the crowd are telling each other Bobby should sing more
I'm digging this- will dance 'till I piss my pants...
I detect an Eyes coming up... hmmmmmmmm...
The best thing is that Bob's wife isn't on this tour with him. He, much like Bill Clinton on Hillary's campaign for president was hanging around "a lot of women" from city to city. I celebrate Bob and everything he is about. If he wants to sing Ashes and Glass, I will conform. Love the Weir. Absolutely love the Weir. In music, he really has no equal.
Ashes & Glass
I actually think it sounds good after weird start Although my fave off that album is Welcome To The World which he says he doesn't play any more...though I saw a great one at Janus LAnding in St Pete when Ellis was still in RD
Althea next
This place is gettin hot
I wouldn't necessarily want to pay to see the last couple of songs, but they ARE doing a nice job with both of them.
What if all tomorrow brings is glasses and hash...now that I could deal with
>>>I wouldn't necessarily want to pay to see the last couple of songs, but they ARE doing a nice job with both of them.
Ditto.

Now all the Bobby fans storm to the bathroom because Phil is singing causin a huge bottleneck at the cossession area
unbroken chain
Jeff H is right on- Weir is hands down the best rythmn guitar player out there. And when the man gets into it and growls a bit he's a great singer too- should've done Tennessee Jed all by himself tonight!
MuleVan just pulled up to the stage door.....
...Warren's gonna take the outro jam into Soulshine.....
....He told me he knows Lites is in there.
hmmm... Why not want to hear different music played by Bobby and Phil?
I think it's a beautiful thing Phil plays the music of someone from this generation at shows... how many other famous musicians can you say that for?
lets all get ready for a mounsterous
OTHER ONE
a true true love song
Interesting jam
The drums sound like oatmeal boxes...
yeah Bobby is great...so cute also...
thats it, thats it, get it !!
>>>Now all the Bobby fans storm to the bathroom because Phil is singing causin a huge bottleneck at the cossession area<<<
Yeah, well, they think sax in rock music sounds good. I don't think I'll go to them for any musical guidance.
i agree with others previous posts
wouldnt write these songs down on my wish list
but they are doing them justice....
Depends on whose playing the sax.
Starting to warm up reeeel good now
here we go
this jam is great!
pinman - Gee maybe Weir should have sang Sugaree as well?
Puh- leaze!!!
Get on the the Ratdog board if you love Booby so much!
Jerry Garcia said in many interviews that Bobby was the best rhythm guitar player ever to pick-up the instrument. He also said he could never figure out where his style came from because it was so bizarre.
I know this news bums the Bobby-bashers out there ~ but life does have its surprises I suppose.
JK shredding...nice jam...nice love those Jerryesque...wobbly jello tones and squiggles
this stream is steady and sounds great, rocking UBC (just got home!):
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/destination-unknown
finally locked into the pocket- first jam was sloppy, now beginning to get the "Q" tightness factor
I think bobby sounds the best he has in many years (vocally and musically). He is an amazing rhythm guitarist and when he stays in his place (not trying to be the band leader) contributes allot to the music.
At the risk of being blasphenous on this board...I have never been a huge UBC fan...but this is the best version I have ever heard in any incarnation
sounds great from sirius as well
(((((Bobby)))))
Nice transition and nice Phil vocals there
Hey- I'm all into fake Jerry but listen to Tennessee Jed from tonight and tell me bobby's vocal sections didn't have more appropriate "attitude" for that particular tune. I also don't think Phil should be doing Peggy-O- John would've been better on that one...
TOO->NFA->DEW
pleasssseeee
wow
this is so pretty. jeff's electric piano rules.
It was also well-played on the New Year's run.
Give me the Dew or give me death.
dew here!
I recommend starting your second set cd with this song... because the second set just started.
I was first row center for the first Chain, it was heaven on earth. Always been a HUGE fan.
>>> bobby's vocal sections didn't have more appropriate "attitude" for that particular tune. >>>
Ok, here goes. Bobby's vocal sections didn't have more appropriate attitude for that particular tune. Why the fuck he insists on trading verses and fucking up half of so many songs is beyond me. Just sing your songs dude, you have someone standing right beside you who can do the others justice, whereas you can't.
thanks
i think jeff may be the best 'boarder' in any incarnation.
I love the extended coda jam of UBC, and this one is a doozy
But really it's like yelling at the TV telling the quarterback to throw it to the other slant route... amazing technology we are enjoying here- Go John Go!
This sounds beautiful. They've definitely got to play something to make the crowd boogoe next
Phil lights up the room when he sings. May he keep shining and shining and shining. He should have sang more with the GD. He should keep singing now.
{{I also don't think Phil should be doing Peggy-O- John would've been better on that one...}}
no way....
i disagree redtide, bobby does a good job, dont have to be so harsh, wheres the love man
DEW!!!!!!
Amen Zeno
TRob?
poz-
what up?
long time no read-
long lapse for scooter.
i couldnt agree more though
why F up a song if you got competent vocals....
There's the Dew...

poz you asskiss it's hard to appreciate subtlety I guess when you're blinded by fake Jerry's cheeks- that said- I'm more than happy to listen to him do this one
beautiful
robby????????!
Jeff is great I have to agree. I think Hornsby was a great baby grand player. Never got to see Brent live...I am from the Vince era
Firing on all cylinders now
is jerry on stage?
jim
i agree
the bruce days were fun- and it was a blast to have him adding to the mix
Brent could WAIL the blues. Many never thought he fit in even after 10+ years, but I was and am a huge fan of his contributions.
the vince era...wow..a sad thought
Hey man...there was some good shit in the Vince era. I remeember a Spring 94 Dew at Nassau where Jerry was just screaming....and besides...it's a long, long, long, long....way to go home
do not hate on Bob
without Bob
this would not be
I will take you home. B. Mydland
Tremendous Unbroken Chain but unfortunately a SIRIUS breakdown during DEW....
Brent in the only Hampton show I ever saw was fuckin INCREDEBLE on Little Red Rooster
2nd night in 89
love bruce, he lives not 15 minutes from our home here in williamsburg virginia, had friends that were actually his caretakers for 3 years
JK has the Dew all to himself! Yes!!!!
DEW...
Bruce is/was a dick
in an interview a few years back he said he gets pissed off when he is playing a concert and fans want to hear some Dead
yeah Nassau 94 greatest shows ever...c'mon
sorry to ruffle any feathers-
brent indeed had his moments and had his tasks to do
he just always seemed to have internal issues that prohibited him from really taking off-
he def had some wonderful times!
If it wasn't for the Dead I dought he could fill a small county fair gig
I was one of those who really hoped Bruce was going to be in on some of the dead reunions...particularly liked the way he sang Jerry tunes with The Other Ones and on those Furthur Festivals back in the day...but I do really like Jeff now...and now that they got the Jerry vocals covered not missing him as much
we all had our fun in the 90s
but lets try and keep it real
F---ing awesome!!!!
If it wasn't for the Dead I dought he could fill a small county fair gig
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
'thats just the way it is'
dude not saying it was greatest show ever..but that Dew was hot...don't make me break out my Deadbase...it was the technical difficulties show after Samson opened the 2nd set. Don't knock 90's Dead when they were on it was great and a unique era...here's the other 1
I saw some real crappy 90's shows
here comes an Other One.....
Tampa in 93 or 94 I can't remember
and I don't think I realy want to
MY love song
O1 called it
I did too...but did you see Copps Coliseum 1st night in '92...a great show to name but one that pops to mind
>>>Bruce is/was a dick
in an interview a few years back he said he gets pissed off when he is playing a concert and fans want to hear some Dead<<<
Not that difficult to understand. Some incredibly abrasive, disrespectful demeanor in this crowd.
I saw some real crappy 90's shows
>>>>>>>>>>>>.
dont feel special
I recommend starting your second set cd with this song... because the second set just started.
Frank's comment looks dead on!
they started O1 in D (for Dew) and then slammed it up to E, nice.
This is one of the best written/sung/played songs of ALL time
The Dew
Listening to the Sirius feed; got turned down by GDTSTOO; first time EVER. Just as well, since my wife is still recovering from the flu, and I've got it! (thanks dear, what a thoughtful Valentine's Day gift!). Under the circumstances, I'd much rather be in my den, though in any other circumstances, I'd much rather be on the floor at Barton Hall. I've been a bit on the fence ever since Furthur popped its head into this world; many reasons, not the least of which being that we're HUGE Warren fans. However, I've been listening to the shows on LMA as the week's gone by, and now this one live and in real time, and I have to say: I'm on this bus! Whatever X factor it is that gives a band real chemistry, this one has it, on a level I haven't heard since the Q. With Phil and Bob feeding him, JK can really channel -- not imitate, channel -- Jerry in a way would not have thought possible. Looking forward to catching 4 shows starting next Friday, by which time, hopefully, the chest crud will be history!
Joe, I went to school in the burg, met Hornsby at an offcampus halloween party in 82 or 83 (he was P Pan if I remember correctly). he disavowed all knowlege of said party when I ran into him at a fund raiser years later, and he was kind of a dick but I thought it was understandable he gets pestered by dead fans more than his own fans. and when he was playing some Ahole (ok it was me) shouted out Sugaree and he played it. BTW Jerry loved Hornsby.
Not only are my kids telling us to turn it down
now the neighbors are askin
Brent was thre shit and wailed. My years were '87-95. Vince was a pussy on keys but the band had many many hot shows during his time. Vince wailed on baba orielly>tomorrow never knows. Remember those encore days? fun stuff...
TRob what we would we do withouy you
I did like when Bruce played with the boys
Just a dick in a few interviews I heard him in.
You can be a great musician and still be a dick in real life.
bill-
you are right on-
many variations-

and john is the X factor-
no doubt about it- i have been screaming for this for years now....
me too crazy 82-95
I'm sure he has hi smoments like everyone...just the fact that you requested his song at his show and he played it speaks more about him that some heresay slander

The Furthur Fest is going to every major metro area and podunk town except for LA. Pisses me off, always overlooked
i love warren haynes but this guy sounds just like jerry
lyrics mishap! ahh Bobby never change
yeah joe he is
Robert Goulet in the house
and he should be singing this
With Bob's terrible idea of phrasing (my only complaint, and it is a recent one...big Bob fan here), I'd much rather Phil take SotM.
Why not let JK sing this? even the "slower" tunes he puts fuckin life into it.
Bobby singing haha
dont get me wrong-
i love bobby!
but john should be singing
amen
re: Sunshine...
I don't know anything about her but she is not Sunshine Kesey. You can find pictures of both of them online. People just see the unusual name of Sunshine and the name GARCIA and their pattern recognition tells them "I've calculated the odds and it's just too much of a coincidence so she must be related to so and so...."
This is a travesty I want a fuckin refund Damn it!
Standing on the Moon!!! Thank you Bobby!
I really need to get to bed, you just made it so much easier.
That Dew was beautiful though...
Weir's Willam Shatner staccato delivery actually works on this tune pretty well.
easy T
take a shower with your wife
replying to someones post earlier...
how can you seriously call John "fake-jerry" open your ears and your mind even if you're joking saying that is just embarrassing.
Also, lol at the person who said after last night today would be a "bad show"
you gotta get to bed?!
5am!
I don't care much about notes. TONES...TONES! Warren had the tones for songs like Mason's and maybe a couple others, but this guy has the right tones for these songs. More serene and copacetic, less rocky rock.
>>> With Bob's terrible idea of phrasing (my only complaint, and it is a recent one...big Bob fan here), I'd much rather Phil take SotM. >>>
I'd rather jab pencils into my eyes than hear either one of them get near it.
'nite folks, hope to catch some of you at RCMH!
seen many shows post jerry and jk does the vocals justice as well as the lead gtr. I do enjoy the jam and bluesey touch of warren but jk lays down the original sound that many of us are custom to.
Sorry I missed the 1st set...from the comments that seemed stronger. This was a well played (if occasionally poorly sung) second set. Nevertheless I'm glad this wasn't the show we got up in Buffalo. I like to boogie to my Dead and this wasn't exactly rockin'...still you can hear the great tones and potential in this band. Hoping I catch a magic night on Wednesday.
poz-
agreed!
fare thee well
Was going to go to bed but wife laying there with you know that look in her eyeys so I ran back in here Bobby is not sounding so bad to me now.
I guess that's my complaint about JK. I greatly appreciate the contribution of every artist who's taken a turn in the hot seat, they find ways to make it their own to varying degrees of success but always fun. JK just tries to be Jerry, and no one can be.... that said, I've only seen him once (Asbury Park), three coming up in the next couple weeks beginning tomorrow in Bethlehem PA. And I wasnt a huge fan of Jackie the first time I saw him, then my brain exploded the 2nd time and I've been a huge fan ever since.
welcome to the bus Rtmcdo
ENJOY!
Alright Bobby hitting them high notes.
Well done
jk rules
Bob's singing this one to Jer
miss-
i dont think john i 'tryin to be jer'
he is just doing what he loves doing-
and it really seems to work
why the heck didnt he sing sotm?
Rider
See that's the thing though... The DSO folk have known this for a while John is much more than just someone trying to sound like Jerry Garcia.. if you've only seen him once with Furthur then I can see how you may see it that way.
but trust me! in time the more you see him the more you'll realize this. It's a beautiful thing.
A little twist tonight

Definitely a weird twist to bring China Cat to a dead stop....it wasn't like it was really jammed or musically connected into SOTM...
I greatly appreciate the perspective. and to correct my earlier post, I've seen DSO a few times, only seen him once with the best cover band. I'm sure he will grow on me.
there tight and sirius has great sound
...some thiongs you just don't mess with...like peanut butter and jelly...and a Help>Slip>Odessa
wondering about the encore ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ????????????????????????
Hmm..I'm sure they intended to do Rider. Not so sure they wanted this feel and slower tempo for it. This might be a Russo fuckup that they had no choice but to go with.

E; Donar Rap
that was weird, I typed a different post, and my old one popped up.... what I meant to say was what happened to the explosive WISH I WAS A HEADLIGHT?
E: Run To You...this Rider jam is swweeettt
Samson Encore
Phil----He's not a rookie You gotta let JK sing "wish I was a headlight"
definately NIck
E: Cuts Like A Knife
They've done Ryan, why not Bryan Adams next?
PL&F split China and IKYR in all kind of ways. This isn't THAT unusual for Phil. Reminds me of how much I enjoyed his chess-like maneuvers with songs in his band. Fuck predictable structure...back to Bruce H, it's why he was such a breath of fresh air. Keep us all wondering. Keep us attentive.
nice, yes I believe he will, thanks understanding I had good intentions in what I said...
just got to remember John Kadlecik is just like us... a deadhead... as well as the rest of DSO.
Phil knows how to fix tempo problems... (whisper in his stage mike "pick up the speeed damnit" then drop a few phil bombs!)
or brokedown

your 2nd set setlist:
SO GLAD THEY DID NOT PLAY HEY JUDE
Gues what,I made it home alive tonight, I was a whining boy this mormimg and here is what I posted.
" this site is too funny..those that have been on the bus for a long while are clearly evident; those that have been chasing the bus are very clearly evident... It's sometimes makes me laugh and at times saddens me (for those that still don't get IT.) Maybe someday, yea, like by Phil's 75th birthday... I still like to giggle inside.
I'm going to Barton Hall tonight, thanks to a very cool Dead Head having some hard times; lets say a collective prayer for her, hoping for her situation to resolve.
Anyway, I'm 49 (been doing this a while, a mere 30 years), I'm sure this incarnation will play music tonight, that's good, right? I gots some positive vibes and energy left in these old bones, I'm bringing all of it I got. Why not bring your positve energy and vibes along? I've witnessed that collective energy turn show on a dime. You can feel it when its there. Both feet still move so I'll dance, I'm pretty sure I got a chance at feeling IT, even if IT's momentary. Its all good so far as I'm concerned. I am fortunate enough to have been born in a time that privliged me to see all these guys, all this music. Its a blessing as far as I'm concerned. Makes me Grateful....
And as I've said before, when I pass through that turnstyle, I'll stop and say to myself, and anyone else that wants to listen; "Dam, Thank God, ITS still happening."
Thats my prediction for this show ad the rest of the tour. See ya tonight.
I was right regarding what I perdictided prior....I think I was anyway, as I did 'check in' for the 1st time in like. 18 years.(Wow I forgot what tat was like. What ablast. And I can still keep it together) I"ll try to get more specific later song by song regarding a review if I cam. I just got in from the show.....
But The show was prety much over the top. Jeff, Phil, and the drumberers were dead on all knight; just unrel. This JK dude is there, here and everywhee. Jusy a talent beyon compare. I've got the set list and I want to reminice. The show was very good. I was present. I was 25ft in fornt of the SB and smiling ear to ear. What a good and happy show with Epic moments in TLEO, BIODTL, Ten Jed(anyone can challenge me on that; best TJ ever played at moments, just hard unreal playing from most on stage), and Sugaree....Very nice despite.... ya know..bw... Read my lips EPIC stuff Epic MOMENTS...2nd set forget it UJB (0K) mostly very good, the 2 that followd ahhhhhh....ok??....Unbroken, Epic and I think the best I've everevrever did I say ever seen. Phil nailed ir ans wa on fire. The Dew, please,? when will we give this kat JK his due. He is good... real good, the deal, those that don;t like him must be afraid of him. He is great and plays dufferent from JG if you listen you'll hear the differencec; but its all very good, alolng with his singing.
Other One, China, Standing on the Moon, Rider, Samapson E - C'mon folks, I got my fill tonight and I hope you did too. I'll whine about Bobby another time, although he managded to step up. I thinks he needs to see the Doc though; those in the know know. All in all they don't get much better. cya in Utica and tear me up if ypu will. I'm big sweaty biker; I can take it.
Peace
Give me a fucking break..Bobby is a FAR more accomplished vocalist than what his face (guy who thinks hes Jerry) and should sing every JG song -please shut your face and be thankful Bob is putting up with this money grubbing band
They have some real pontential, they just have to get rid of mr UNoriginality...bring on Murawski, and let him show whats really up...
Anybody know where the SBD feed is posted?
>>>Give me a fucking break..Bobby is a FAR more accomplished vocalist than what his face (guy who thinks hes Jerry) and should sing every JG song<<<
BWA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Now, if that isn't the most absurd statement made this year.
Bob should've sang "Morning Dew" instead of Kadlecik?!
Whose dick did you suck to get in here?
I nominate this yutz for President of the Moron Section, of the Knucklehead Club.
Great review Bob and Taperrob you hot some awesome shots from taper alley, it was night it was to the side of the sb. What kind of camera do you use?
Anyway after a show like that I was awoke at 7:15 am by some tour heads warmly greeting each other in the hall .
That post show electricity was running through my head so I tried to go back to sleep but could not, so I will share an extended review and some pics.
I hope you enjoy.
To begin with if there are ANY doubter of JK left read Bob's review and I will chime, after seeing Wallingford and both Asbury Park shows that this band is really climbing the ladder and this is real. The chemistry between the main three is getting better and stronger each show.
What I will add as a side bar and I would be curious of other's observations, is the blatant indifference of many who attended this show. I was every where and ended up spending the entire second set 15 ft in front of the sb and I could count on ONE hand the people who were dancing within a 10 ft radius. I was shocked!
I mean what will it take. FOLKS this is it!! So be here now and love it cause this is a good as it gets and that being said we are blessed that the magic can still occur on the level.Years from now many of these shows will become the feast of lore.
When I got back to the hotel, these two youngin's where happily observing the four large adult deer that were living on median in the middle of suburban sprawl. Anyways I asked how they enjoyed the show and their reactions was "it was ok" I burst out laughing I said what are you crazy? The dude says that this band is just a "glorified ratdog" and said Jeff was the man in this band.He also said he hated Phil's voice so I was almost gonna give him a zoner slap down for that quip LOL . He said he loved Jeff but I was like. " Just listen to the show again"
Finally the lack of post show glowing i the sb line was also indicative of this as well.
Ok I will jump off the soap box and just give you the meat. This is from last night but expanded.
Hi reporting live from the Ramada Inn on top of the big hill outside town, the with the resident deer living on the median in the parking lot What can I say? The first set was really good, opening with a rock solid Midnight Hour that showcased Bob and it was clearly evident that he was in great spirits and his vocal raps were appropriate and tasteful. This version was like one from the spring of '87 with out missing a beat they jump into a sweet Valentine TLEO and JK and the band deliver an tight version. Then we get some rare Bob commentary of how the mike stands were shocking him and Phil, thought of Woodstock when he said this, and that since JK does not care the same "weight" as he and Phil do, he does not have the same set up LOL. Next two songs are very tight and with plenty of fun, Bobby delivers another great BIODTL. JK extends the solo and they follow up with Tennessee Jed, which was great they were grooving but the end of the set was exceptional.
Yes it was lots of love songs but man they were awesome. The Peggi-O was much better than the one in Asbury Park and JK had a nice extended solo compliments of Phil. On second listen it really is quite special.
So far nothing is totally off the track but it is perfectly played and then LL Rain.
I think in some ways Bobby still grieves the loss of his brother in ways we will never clearly understand and I thought this version was a acknowledgement of that. I mean Bobby was so passionate on this one and just built up the ending so sweetly and then he trined on the power and the ending just exploded. " Feel it comin now" it was the first WOW moment of the set and JK was amazing.
Oh yeah so was PHIL!!!
Then I believe we got JK's first Sugaree ,and I think looking at the set list you can see this was a lovin' Valentine to Jerry as the entire show was.
I loved the groove in this one and it was exceptional and very warmly received and then to play one more song after this?
LMAO!!! A raved up Good Lovin' let you know it was a special night.
The second started off with a very nice UJB, slight vocal miscue, but it was really well done and then Peaceful Valley, yes Ryan's song, and it was really good and then they jammed out of it into what I thought first was T- Stones, opps I messed up that call and apologized to the guys from Toronto I was talking too, but then it became Ashes & Glass. It was a peel the onion song, so many lyrics that don't make sense LOL, but they ended it well.
All the doggies loved it ;)
Then the vault doors burst wide open. I mean I was 15 ft in front of the SB and I was freakin' BLOWN AWAY It sounded perfect there and there was plenty of room to dance.
The Unbroken chain, like in Asheville, was HUGE. They are nailing this song like you would not believe and Phil sounded amazing. The ending is become its own song the way they are doing.
Then to dropping into Morning Dew was ectasy.
This was easily the best version I have seen since Nassua '94. They just soared on it and I was in tears.
Kuduos to JK for really making this night so extra special, his first solo alone will bring you to tears and Bobby and Phil where just right there the entire journey.
The ending was a sight to behold and was quite moving.
Thank you guys!!
The to go into an Other One jam was like fasten your seat belts kids were are breaking the atmosphere. I am listening to the board right now, only bummer is they separate the Dew and the O1 ,
They raged on this version. I LOVED IT!!!!!!
Then to go into China Cat? LMAO I guess that was for Keys. It was much better than Wallingford and I was there. This one was so thick and bouncy and the band was in total sync, then they go in SOTM. Wow two monster Jerry ballads in one set? Which again was hit out of the park Bobby really shined and I was happy he sang it.
To book end with INYR was inspiring and this version was smokin' I mean the intro to the first verse alone was incredible and then it just got better.
We called the Samson and it was a blast. A couple of notes Bobby was very talkative during the forest set and said some classic BW dead pan humor. That was cool
Finally the new lightning rig is much better, I still would like more but they did some neat stuff with it.
I also took plenty of pictures and many came out not bad so I will include some in this review.
Peace out zoners us lucky enough to make the trek are still riding that post show glow.
Sweet dreams this morning for sure
Midnight hour
TLEO Happy Valentine Day Jerry
BIODTL
Peggi-O Go Phil!!!
Looks Like Rain
Awesome moments listening to the crystal clear stream last night- the one weak link is the drumming IMO- but even with Billy & Mickey nowadays it ain't the same since Mickey won't sit behind a kit anymore. I think if this current lineup included Mt. Molo it would erupt with that powerful, driving drumming we used to know and love. Even When Billy was the solo drummer for a couple years he was a busy shiva on the stool- not sure what the stand up drummer was doing just by listening, but there were many moments I yearned for the extra tom fills and kick beats that really drive some of the tunes- listen to Rider for example.
That said, I ain't complaining- just critiquing. And I can't hardly wait to get my fill in person Weds in BFLO.
High points for my ears last night- John and Bobby in many moments, but my biggest source of bliss was the way the entire band locked into the pocket and channeled the group mind during the second and end jams on UBC, and of course Dew. It's those nugget moments that are worth mining for.
Opps BIODTL
One of the better pics
SUGAREE!!!
" Don't tell them that you knoooow meeeee"
LOL.....
>>>Then to go into China Cat? LMAO I guess that was for Keys. It was much better than Wallingford<<<
Brilliant?
Amazing?
No!
Just adequate!.............describes the "China Cat" from Oakdale, as opposed to last night.
Not to mention the jam and "Rider" out of "Standing On The Moon".
Sounded great on the Sirius feed, Ted.
Comfortably ensconced on the couch, with a bottle of Irish Whiskey...Tullamore DEW.
For me, not being there, the only downsides were "Peaceful Valley", which really wasn't that bad...and "Ashes and Glass", which JK saved from being an abominable mess.
And, "Unbroken Chain" seemed to start out a little shaky, but gelled together nicely as they went along.
Other than that...aces back to back, man.
Very nice reviews Bob and Ted.
Ted, China Cat better than Wallingford? I have another "must hear" added to my list!
I still can't believe IT is still happening.
<<<"Ashes and Glass
I was like wtf, is this REALLY a song??!!!
great time, great music with great friends. Just what the doctor ordered.
I love you all. XOXO
from the bottom of my heartt, thank you.
yes this show was super-cosmic with almost TOO many messages.
clarity and empowerment is was my take-away.
I second the motion for the Holtan/Lovehaight post as an early contender for "Post of the Year." an instant classic.
hope he comes back with more where that came from. the fact that he only has 4 posts seems quite a shame, when he has such wondrous resources upon which to draw.
>>> Give me a fucking break..Bobby is a FAR more accomplished vocalist than (insert most any name here except Phil's)>>>
lol. That's some funny shit.
Great review Ted...
I've mentioned this once already but another post popped up...
the hatred for JK from some of you people (only two in this thread) makes me sick.. are you that self-righteous to go around saying "guy who thinks he's jerry"..
you guys clearly don't get it... it's as simple as that. I feel sorry that you can't open your ears enough to hear and experience what most people are. Might as well not post at all..
Listened to the whole show via Sirius.
Thoroughly impressed with the show & this line-up. Bobby was good, Phil is always solid, but the interplay of Jeff & JK is where its at.
Real nice 1st set. Peggy-O followed by LL Rain was the highlight of 1st for me. Great playing by JK.
2nd set - started off with a really nice UJB. I like Ryan Adams personally - so Peaceful valley was fine by me, and they did a good version of it. Wasnt thrilled with Ashes & Glasl selection, but again they pulled it off nicely.
Unbroked Chain was incredible. Once they toof off they really took it. Followed by a gret Dew. and then an real incredible Other One.
Chain & Other 1 highlighted this set for me, with Dew right behind.
SOTM is a sweet song, woulda been better if JK sang it. But still solid. An abover - average Rider to close it. Then an above-average Samson too - was ahsame they had to go!! coulda used another song or two, lol..........
Again - Jk very solid. This band seemns to have that IT factor. Jeff is a big factor too.
sweet feed from sirius last night until weather probs (mpls snow) cut mine @ the end of UBC, cut about 3min of the segue betw UBC and Dew, both of which were just epic!!! JK and JC shine togetha, and both let Phil and Bobby find their old slots to shower GD sound upon us once again!
That being said, got to stop with the Dog and Adams tunes in Set2. I could deal some first set Adams (or not), but 20min portions of second sets that are only Adams or Dog is not acceptible from the talent pool on that stage. The Dog tunes need to get the ax entirely. That Two Dijjn set close a few nights ago was a joke, and that Asses and Gas in Cornell was wretched: they actually teased Throwin out of Peaceful Valley and then played A&G that instead! If BW wants to sing new tunes, he should dig up Pig tunes: he was great on Caution and obviously took over Lovelight, Schoolgirl, Good Lovin, etc. with great results.
First set was really solid, large Sugaree and Good Lovin action, and sweet Mdnt Hr>TLEO opener "Got to try and see a little furthur!"
GREAT SECOND SET FROM UBC on! Unreal UBC jams, segue from Dew>TOO, and Samson encore were all massive. Even though I'd prefer JK vox on the SOTM, BW did a tolerable job on the suprise sandwich in the closing China>Rider.
Still looking for all GD second sets from these guys, but they are really jelling. hope they keep that energy goin tonight for their fourth in a row!?

Please, I saw enough of those to last more than a lifetime. Last night's 2nd Set was something the GD would have NEVER attempted.
While I enjoyed the show, I am glad that I only paid $25 for the tix. I enjoyed the 1st set a great deal, it was much more rockin' than the 2nd set. Tennesse Jed was great.
The 2nd set seemed like everytime they would get some energy going they would pull the plug out.
Uncle John's was nice, then they play the ryan song. I was trying to figure out what the song was. Out of all the covers they could play, this is what they come up with. Is Phil getting residuals for playing these songs?
The ratdog song wasn't my fav either, but who cares. I enjoyed the other one, always have always will, the china cat was tremendous, but why the slow song before the the know rider. I like standing on the moon, but in between those 2 songs that have always gone together it didn't fit. I was scatching my head wondering what the heck. It was about this time during morning dew that the DSO guy was doing another Jerry run and I thought to myself--does he a have a different set of petals for each era of the dead music he has played over the years.
Never saw DSO and was skeptical of this arrangement from the get go, but is he an original guitar player or just copying all Jerry's licks. Phil has had a lot of other players over the years and they mostly all had their own original styles, which added to the mix.
I guess after 32 years seeing the different incarnations of this band, this was not my cup tea. I had fun, nice dinner, visited with my buds, glad it was $25.
I gotta say here in the armchair qb role, I love the Ryan Adams tunes sung by JK. It's a masterstroke from Phil to find the guy writing new Dead songs and matching them with the guy who can channel Jerry...it's an odd orbit to creating new GD material, but it sure sounds better to these ears than anything new in the Weir or Lesh catalog.
Also after 32 years of seeing the different incarnations, this is the first one that does IT (again, post-Jer)for me - the feeling and emotion in the jams that GD music should have, and for me was lacking, in every previous version. Most of which had players that barely learned the material, and the one so many here think the best, the PLQ, I found too southern-fried in the guitars to return to the former GD levels this new band takes me too.
And after about 91 or 92, the GD was not getting there for me much anymore, what with Jer's decline, Cutler's awful sound-mixing, and Vince's terrible wheezing fake organ synth sound which I tended to really want to just go away.
"It's a puzzlement." (Teri Garr - Young Frankenstein).
That's the phrase that comes to mind when reading the widely varied comments above. How did this band, of all bands, manage to attract so many grumpy, finicky, and divisive individuals? C'mon people, I thought we were all about love and music and community. Why quibble over which songs are played and who sings what? We all have different tastes and perspectives but that's makes it all so good! One man gathers what another man spills!
Remember the words of John Lennon:
And in the end
The love you take
is equal to the love you make
And those from Jackson browne:
People you've got the power over what we do
You can sit there and wait
Or you can pull us through
Come along, sing the song
You know you can't go wrong
I'm so grateful to be able to hear this music continue - let us not forget that while the music will live on, it looks like the old men are gettin' on. I just want to keep riding the bus as long as I can and there ain't no time to hate.
I am guided by the words of Mr Stephen Stills:
If you can't be with the one you love
Love the one you're with!
Peace!
it isn't hating to say you'd rather hear lovelight than two dijjn. it's an opinion. just like my opinion that jackson browne is a pussy
The only opinions that are wanted are glowing positive, lovey-dovey ones.
I saw the band and gave an opinion, didn't go to shows for some kind of love fest in he past.
I always went to dance, have a good time, and listen to a band. If they play music you can't dance to, that makes me think.
Hey now Jones
You'll pardon me, I hope, if I don't rise to the bait as regards your opinion of Jackson Browne.
As to the rest, I have no objection to any expression of opinion, so long as comments are reasonably civil and generally respectful of others in the community. We are a vast and varied bunch of misfits and naturally we're not always going to agree. Vive la différence!
As regards the music, I long ago gave up wishing for this song or that one and simply let it all wash over me. Some nights I have more fun than others and I readily admit I have favorite songs. There's a difference, however, between wishing for a song you like and deriding another person's preferences. Let us not forget that *the band* wants to play these songs and I believe we should respect the band's choices. That or stay home.
P.S. I'd rather hear Lovelight than Two Djinn, too.
Peace!
I agree with Deacon on this. Why is everyone so critical?
If one is looking for total perfection - the best thing to do is follow U2 or something. They play the same basic show every night - rehearse that same basic show for a few months so it is absolutely right and wha-la. A close-to-perfect cookie cutter show. (I'm not picking on U2 - just the first band that came to mind).
However, this band doesn't do it that way and they never have. They're always good for a solid train wreck or two (I personally like to see how they get out of those). Bobby's going to blow some lyrics, (been happening since day one). Time signatures will find themselves a little too slow or a little too fast. A blown lead here or there... Phil will never drop enough bombs to make everyone happy. There will always be a song whom many feel had the wrong vocalist or a song that's not played just the way you want it from Europe 72.
Yet there will always be some very beautiful moments, some of those moments lasting longer than others. There are moments of joy, moments of remembrance, moments of sadness, moments of tranquility and moments that just plain make you wanna jump up &down and shout along with many moments of needing to dance.
I can't think of another band that spins this web so well night after night after night... And the moments mentioned are really just the tip of the iceberg for the whole experience that is this band and their live performance.
There is always at least five or six great stories per show that has to do with people you've met, old friends you run into, spilling the beer you just paid $10. for only minutes after you purchased it. The trip getting to the show, the trip home.
There is simply nothing quite like this. Having seen this band (and incarnations of) for 33 years now - I won't claim to be the expert. But to be honest, it really hasn't changed one bit.
Now honestly, it was always somewhat enjoyable to poke fun at this or that which made up the zaniness of this one-of-a-kind-band and the overall total experience, but we never got overly critical about it to the point of bitchiness. Every single aspect of it was all just the sum of the parts for the main ingredient of the long strange trip. We were (and many still are) still enjoying the ride - warts and all.
I'll spare you all my song by song crtique. Ted handled it fine, very fine indeed, I couldn't have touted it any better.
There is a gererational thing going on between us uh ummm aa "Dead Heads"? - I know I'm one. You? I agree with Ted, I'll be 50 in May. Last night kids, and I do mean kids were looking at me like I had 2 heads, or perhaps 12 feet and 4 hands. All were very respectful of my 6'1" 235#'s of old dead head biker space. Many eyebrows were rasied at my dancing and cunducting antics. It's what I've always done when ITS going down and as stated IT was happening last night. Most around me stood staring at the stage or me and the other dancers, with the occasional head bob. Everyone has their own deal; but I COULD NOT stop dancing and conducting and clapping and smiling and laughing and calling the ocassional song. Most could have been my kids. We 40, 50, 60 somethings came from a different era. We really know what IT is, some of the younger folks? I'm not so sure. How can ya compare JK to Jerry when you never even seen Jerry. What is my point? I don't really know; only that by the end of what I consider an Epic show...Thats right, for me, Epic. For these guys to take a song that at one point was an apparent train wreck and turn it into total gem is unreal. Looks Like Rain is an example. Bobby leaving out words "i only want to hold you, I don't.....or fence you...." if he sang that verse it was barley audible. To then within moments have me jumping for joy is IT for me. But I digress. By the end of the show I was soaked with sweat and most around me barley had lifted a foot, nor held a bead on their brow. I saw you other smiling dancers, I know we're still there, but it seems the daze of every foot in the place shakin it may be over. I could care. I'm gonna go til I can't or IT stops...and IT has not stopped, so I'll see you all in Utica. I'll be the fairly big bearded dead head that can't stop dancing, or conducting for that matter. I'll be around the front of the sound board and I'll have my 16 and 18 year old boys with me. If history serves me my kids will be dancing too....Must be in the genes.
And the dude up the page that made that outrageous Bobby comment....huh? No comment. IT has eluded you.
As Always Peace!
Well stated Bob... I think it was you who coined the phrase "bus-chasers." A keeper.
Hoff
From one big, ol' bearded, 49 yr old Deadhead biker to another, keep on dancing brother! I remember being 25 and looking curiously at the old folks leaping about. Now *I'm* the old guy (6'3" 290#)and I find myself laughing when I catch the kids eye-balling me with that same "wtf" expression I used to have.
and they kept on dancin'...
Deacon
hey hoff you were dancing in the wrong place, next time come hang with us, ALL ages from 20's to 60's we are one big dance PARTY ALL NIGHT LONG, the sweatier the better!!!
glad you had fun.
last night felt like one of those shows that were written for just for me.
Hey Hoff... I was stood next to you at some point last night before the show and we chatted for a bit.
This was a really emotional show for me. Two weeks ago my brother turned 40 and was diagnosed with cancer, and it doesn't look good at this point. I went to Barton solo from NYC after canceling plans for Hampton and Fairfax. My brother and I went to my first show at RFK in 86, and while he never got on the bus like I did, he definitely loved the Dead, especially Sugaree. I haven't even started to wrap my head around what's happening with him, but from LLR to the end of the show I kept breaking into tears. I was there alone, but felt so much love from that stage last night. LLR, Sugaree, DEW, SOTM and Rider all hit me in the gut and the tears came. My thoughts were with my brother and his family all night. I'm kind of a mess now, but that was a show I will never forget. We are so lucky to still have Bobby and Phil around to show us thatlife is all about seeing what happens when you go further...
Loving kindness to all sentient beings. Namaste.
>>>>>By the end of the show I was soaked with sweat and most around me barley had lifted a foot, nor held a bead on their brow
Sounds like an awesome show, and I am glad you had a great time. I just want to put it out there that not all who do not dance are not getting 'IT'. I often just like to stand and listen to the music.. I do not feel that doing so means I am any less into what is going on than a person who moves a lot. We are just taking in the music in different ways. That is not to say that I am not sometimes moved to dance.. sure I am, but wether or not I dance is not my measure of how good the music is. And yes, i did see Jerry several times.
Some like to shake it, and some like to bathe in it lake a ray of sun (like a tree)... it is a yin yang thing, and all should be encouraged to groove with the music in the most real way they can.
I like to channel the energy through me and spit it back out lending my will to the process of what is happening on stage.
Keep the rocking for another time. I love the '76 tones with the '69 and '74 improv sensibilities. (Man, I wish JK could find those Playing in the Band dynamic jam tones of '74). I want long jamming and interstellar space for three hours. I can go to any number of rock concerts and listen to structured songs and rock out, but there are very, VERY few bands that can actually improvise and take us to new places every night. Same goes for the canned set lists...like wanting IKYR to ALWAYS follow China Cat, or Fire to ALWAYS follow Scarlet? Have you folks been paying any attention to the incredibly thoughtful and free-form setlists Phil has been giving us for years? Are those not some of the greatest gifts since the 70s? You really want to waste this talent on predictability and established structures? WHY???
As I said last night somewhere above in this thread, I don't necessarily want to pay to see songs like Ashes and Peaceful, but they did a very nice job with them last night. Honestly, I'd rather see those songs played at this skill level than another Dylan or Beatles song (I like Dylan and The Beatles, but not Dead versions). My goodness, may we please forget the 80s and 90s happened as we journey with this band.
I was about to say the same thing Skullcap just spoke on; not everyone who is wrapped into the music is dancing.
You can't judge how a person is grooving by how much they're moving. Just because they're not overtly dancing or physically gyrating doesn't mean they're not locked in. When I'm hearing the proverbial "IT" I usually pull the brim of my hat down over my eyes and stand still or sway, yet I am still most definitely grooving.
And I can groove with my "meat in my seat" just as well as standing, and at my advancing age I often prefer to sit. That is NOT a bad thing.
Now TALKERS on the other hand, they will talk, bounce their heads for a second, talk some more and then HOWL & clap at the end of the song like they were actually listening, and the next day they're usually the ones saying, "EPIC show last night!!!". THAT I can not stand.
And a tough tale about your brother Dude. That is the type of story that has followed the band since their early days; how the music & these players will take each of us to a different place, yet we're all riding on the same bus.
But it's not just ANY bus, and THAT is what makes it all so great.
Carry on.
dear boys and the band, thank you for an epic time. best rider I ever hear. God bless us all - and keep Taper Rob happy & healthy as well.
deacon im with ya: just want the boys to fulfill their promise on this better than expected last go-round, and bobby's interview posted today seems to indicate that we will get a few years of this perhaps! he also rather hilariously admitted to being fat in the recent past. the more sweet shows they play the more Bobby and Phil's egos will subside and the fewer Dog/P&F tunes will get played. cant compare the UBC>on part of set2 to anything post 94 other than prior furthur sets this tour!!!!
Dude Guy, I recall our chat last night, your eyes and I picked up on a touch of your pain. Prayer is a powerful tool, I'll be using it for you and your bro. Peace to you him and your family; please know that you're all in my thoughts and my prayers.
To the non dancers, I get IT, I've sat for many shows and walked away just as happay as I could be. I was merley taking note of the mellow nature of the crowd around me given the shows very intense grooves, backbeats, soaring leads, changes, and well timed jams....Perhaps I should reconsider my use of the word Epic as I must admit I did use it rather freely above. But the fact of the matter is, last night did have some Epic moments for me. The jams in (and I can't believe this happened for me) but the jam in, of all songs Tenn Jed, I was scraping my jaw off the floor. The other two major "epic" moments were during and throughout both Unbroken Chain and also Morning Dew. Each were as well done as I've ever seen them done or heard them done. Again, Dude Guy, I rember our chat and connection and my thoughts and prayers are with you and you bro.
Peace and Kind Happy Regards to all. Wheather your the Cowboy Neal at the wheel or the bus-chaser at the begining of the road. Ther is room on this bus for all of us. Let's send a collective positive vibe to Dude Guy, his brother and his family. Peace.
Bluelighttrain sorry to hear about your brother, that is awful news. I wish you and your family the best dealing with this.
Last night was another gift and you made the journey and it sounds like your heart was wide open from it, that is something quite special, and I for one believe that may help the situation. You were there helping to ground this energy in our plane.May it bless you and your brother.
Hoff you nailed it brother!! I mean honestly it is almost like us dancers/crazy be in the moment DH are facing cultural extinction.Granted that may be an over statement but this is a example that is so unique and part of late 20th century, the irony is that the music was the teacher then and that teacher is still with us, so why these kids don't get it? I am stumped and I am trying to be the best example every show I see.
Huff I will be in Utica as well. I have a feeling it will be a dance fest
Finally one more bit to add to the review, the two ladies are amazing. I mean compared to December the harmonies are on a new level and they really sound sweet. I say they should get some verses in Maggie's Farm
On a different note I took the " scenic" route from my house in western CT, and thought it would be a good idea to cut through the Catskills. It was pretty but it took 6 hours and thus I arrived so late I did not meet many of you at the show. The irony was that many of you zoners were literally 20 ft behind me next to the sb during the second set.
I hope to meet many of you during the rest of the tour.
Happy Trails
Guys that is very true point and there has been plenty of shows that I was glued to the chair, but you think clapping, cheering, screamingMe or a killer whistle would occur. Many of these folks did none of that either.
Ok I have to start planning next weekend
Thanks to everyone for the vibes and prayers. It's a heavy time, and this music is what I need to ground and heal. I draw so much strength from it. It's hard to explain that to my friends who don't get the Dead, but I know people here on the Zone understand it.
I am also a sweaty dancer and was getting some eyes from some kids during set 2, flailing about and crying. It's all about being present in the moment, feeling the joy and pain and letting it pass through you in whatever way it can. I love shows because I feel like it's a safe space to express yourself in whatever way the music moves you. In my case, it literally moves me. For many, it moves the inside more than the outside. It's all good, as long as you are present.
bluelightrain
may the music bring you peace in the days ahead. keep love in your heart and your brother will always be with you.
without love in the dream it will never come true
-Deac
Bluelight, like everyone above said, you, your brother and your family are all in my thoughts and prayers. Never lose hope and miracles do happen. Everyday. (not that your bro will need one but it's always a nice thing to hold onto.)

I can not find the interview. Can anyone supply a link?
eek.

The garage definitely had its bummer moments.
Just a quick note to encourage you to sell everything you own and go on Furthur tour with Phil and Bobby.
Or not.
In classic fashion I saw the show at Cornell's Barton Hall (site of the legendary 5/8/77 show.) and the next night at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA.
The Barton Hall show was hands-down my favorite show since 1982. Better than any post-'82 Grateful Dead shows I saw, better than any Phil and Phriends or Other Ones or Ratdog or The Dead show.
And the show the next night at Lehigh was... OK. More like a Ratdog show with some fine playing in the second half of the second set.
All part of my brilliant theory:
I've seen good shows two nights in a row.
And I've even seen great shows two nights in a row.
But In 34 years of seeing shows I've NEVER seen the amazing mind-melt show two nights in a row. To date I think I've seen six shows in my life that fit the jaw-dropping category. (Or as we once heard a Deadhead tell an usher at the Uptown Theater in Chicago, "I've seen the Grateful Dead 53 times. And 52 times they've let me down. But ONCE they were GREAT!")
ANYWAY... everyone has their favorite style, but this is why I think the show I saw at Barton was my favorite in years and encourage you to go -- you'll have to decide for yourself if the stuff I like fits your personal tastes. In no particular order:
o The band has the best tone I've heard in years and years. The keyboard player uses mostly an ACOUSTIC piano, doesn't have a synthesizer at all, and I couldn't be happier. I've missed this sound for more than 20 years. When he plays he's great, but he knows when it's time to NOT play. The piano is back as more as a percussion instrument instead of a constant background fill. Hallelujah!
o Similarly, many rave about the sound of Jerry's Wolf guitar, but I am clearly in the minority -- I much prefer the sound of Jerry's Fender or Travis Bean shows (think Skull and Roses or Europe '72). I prefer the guitars to have as few effects boxes as possible. One of the things that originally attracted me to the Grateful Dead is the same thing that attracted me to The Beatles -- a really clean sound -- the complexity comes from intelligent song craft, not electronics boxes.
o The new lead guitar player. I wouldn't call his work brilliant, but to his credit, he can certainly keep up with Bobby and Phil. Of great relief to Deadheads -- he doesn't seem to me to be trying to copy Jerry like your local Dead cover band might. He remembers all the words to the songs, knows when it's time to sing, and knows what he can't sing.
o It is clear that the band has REHEARSED, and that's good. Yeah, it sounds cool to me too to never rehearse, but this is much better.
o New jams in new portions of the songs. New vocal treatments. Some are fantastic, some miss the mark, but they are TRYING and that's a relief.
o No more crappy saxophone players.
(I'm all in favor of GOOD saxophone players in your band, but it helps if your name is James Brown).
o The old structure of the set lists is mostly gone. So instead of thinking, "OK, we'll get drums/space, a fast Bobby song, followed by a slow Jerry song," it's all wide open. One of the interesting mysteries of last night's show was Black Peter in the first set. Too many nights in the past when we heard Black Peter rolling around late in the second set it was always a great song but I couldn't help thinking, "Again? This is the slot that could be used for Stella Blue, Wharf Rat, Morning Dew..."
o Smaller halls. The past two nights were great reminders of the '79 college tour -- smaller halls instead of arenas. Tickets on sale for both shows at show time.
o Phil. The first night I was second row. Last night I was off the floor on the side, close to the stage. Both nights I could hear Phil loud and clear and he's in great form. The best playing I've heard from him in years, in part because I can hear him (compared to the big halls where the bass just turns in to a big hum...) and in part because it sounds to me that there's more interaction between the individual musicians -- to me too many Phil and Phriends shows had a standard jam sound that didn't vary enough for me.
o The two female back-up singers are, thank goodness, 99 percent invisible. For better or worse they seem to step in mostly in situations where the boys can no longer hit the high/loud notes. ("A rare and different tune, TERRAPIN STATION.") This makes the vocals a lot smoother. My only regret is that we are all getting older and there are some songs they just can't hit. On the flip side, the end of Looks Like Rain had a different vocal style from Bob. I'm attributing it to his inability to hit those big loud high notes, but this was still swell.
o Side note -- at Lehigh they did Gloria as the second song, and Bob went off on a bizarre rant worthy of Pigpen -- I've never seen Bobby so far off the rails so early in a show. Not sure it was my cup of tea, but he gets an "A" for effort.
OK? OK. Quit your job. Go. Pray for the right night.
