Have a good show everybody! One more day before I get to go Furthur!
ahh yeah.. finally get to see this incarnation.

They shouldn't always feel the need to play truckin everytime they are near buffalo? How about a pocky way!
I have to say that Furthur is Philling my expectations! :-)
Many nice tunes being played. I like that JK is on guitar! He brings alot of energy to this band. He also lives and breathes the Grateful Dead music. High Five to him!

yea. i remember in akron desolation row jerry walked off stage at the statrt of the song and the rest just played it out. really hot that day.
Trying to sing-along/harmonize with Dylan was futile, also, in Akron.
Hey great show thus far but I smell a minor wiff of a hold out...looking forward to amherst. I love the fact that after 23 years of shows I am still as pumped as I was when I was 16! Puting money on a US blues encore...or a casey jones...see you in amherst!...oh yeah baby ballsy enough to use my real name after 6 years off the board...all the old names still around? be well and have fun!@

Truckin' encore... ???
How was that Hurricane? Phil and Friends did that with Chris Robinson and it wasn't bad. Just wondering how it sounded and who sang it.

JK sings "Hurricane", as on 1/3:

wow shakedown
iko encore would be sick...lol
The duck story the other night got me thinking about the dogs nose joke in Saratoga. pouring rain. felt bad for the reserved seats. I was at the general admission fence on the edge of the reserved seats and was pushed up to at least the 5th row. A giant of a head scooped me up and let me hang with him and his girl for the rest of the show 5 rows back on center.
I think the band was banned from there for a few years after that. Kids hanging off the rafters etc.
IKO>Truckin' would be sweet to shut it all down.
Attics Encore would be amazing
how did they transition from death dont to shakedown?
terrapin encore in SF - anything possible
The band never played SSPAC again after thousands of morons crashed the place in '88.

Back in the day we had the "Touch of Greyer" which was basically the same concept.

One of the funniest querries of the tour!! I wondered the same thing though..whats next, a Help>slip>black peter>franklins, that would be hot actually and within the range of tuning.
Re: 83-85, 88 SPAC Shows; 7/4/86 Rich Stadium; 87 & 88 Silver Stadium, Rochester shows.
I was at ALL these shows (and then some)...'86 was on 4th of July at Rich Stadium (a Friday--I had just graduated exactly one week prior---you don't forget this prime of life stuff ever) Dylan & TP & the Heartbreakers.. Dead came on first at 2pm...one of the absolute worst traffic jams I've ever been in (and that includes driving in NYC, DC, Chicago, Atlanta and LA!) took over 3 hours to travel 2 miles--actually shut the car down several times to sit and wait to drive 100 feet then repeat...girlfriend and I made friends with three gooney birds in the line to the gate..."sun so hot, clouds so low" (no clouds at all that day)..."Brother Esau" in 1st Set which was only like 6 songs...2nd Set was broadcast for Live Aid-(they used to do it on July 4th before moving it to Labor Day and then even later in susbsequent years)...US Blues encore (Bobby says something like "now we're gonna play 'America's tune'"...) mass exodus after the Dead, which ended about 5pm...thereafter Dylan/Petty opened the remaining few shows because literally half the stadium was gone...last show (as scheduled) of the tour was 7/7 or 7/9 RFK in which the boys played a "sick" "Satisfaction" along with band intros by Bob Weir followed by Jerry introducing Bobby by saying "...one of my favorite people in the whole wide world, Bob Weir!". As everyone knows, they never did intros of themselves (Bill Graham of course doing it on special occasions), and how curious this circumstance would turn out to be as it would be Jerry's last show pre-coma (#1)...don't confuse the following '87 Dylan/Dead Summer Tour (sans TP&HBs)....
'85 SPAC (Saratoga Performing Arts Center, my hometown venue):
Weir: "I say, Phil, my dog has no nose."
Lesh: "No nose?!? How does he smell?"
Weir: "Quite awful!"
For a venue built in '66 with no intent nor idea of holding more than 15,000 as a summer residency home for the NYC ballet and Philadelphia Orchestra, respectively an a few "special events" as the pop/rock shows were referred to, 58,000+ bursting from the seams, including many who just tore down the perimeter fences...was outrageous, off the hook and literally over the top...we were in the balcony (yes we bought our tix months in advance and back in those days did the mail order when you had to have everything "just exactly perfect" with the right size SASE #10 size envelope, index card, post-mark, etc. we were also at 83 and 84) which was swaying to/fro 2-3 feet during the whole show---guys were hanging off the catwalks and finally Bobby said "management has asked us for you to get down from there..." Phil had to call the guy out: "Hey man we're talking about YOU!!! after that the venue implemented a 30,000 capacity for all shows...and the GD weren't invited back til '88, which sucked--negative energy from stage to lawn and vice versa...dirty faux heads/gate crashers anti-establishment mules with some distorted sense of self-entitlement--I always remember seeing about 100 of these scumbags rush and overtake an usher just trying to do his job and then security guards swingin their Mag-Lites on their heads...real peaceful, loving and cool...THAT'S when it was ruined for sure and never really the same again...I remember thinking we (the collective) don't deserve to be invited back and hope the Dead NEVER come back to SPAC (I was born and raised in Saratoga Springs, BTW). It wasn't uncommon to see Bob Weir riding the trails around the park when they were (there)...my friend met uo with him and he said the park reminded him of back home in Cali...someone mentioned Phil & Friends yeah, they played there several times in early 2000's, too....so did Ratdog (8/6/95) three days before Jerry death (a very different Ratdog in those days, btw), the first Further Festival was there in '96 and then the Other Ones on 7/4/98..."the Dead" in 2003 and 2004 (8/1/04: Jerry's Birthday tribute show)...yeah, I was at all those shows....and made it for the first time to "Mothership Hampton" just last Friday (2/12/10) to go "further" once again...don't even get me going on Silver Stadium '87 (and also there in '88) and the emergence of the nitrous tanks (i.e. "hippie crack"), when the foundation first started to crack (no pun intended, but then again...)
Thanks for letting me ramble and triggering the "flashbacks"...
"We used to play for Silver, now we play for life..."
"Without Love in the Dream it'll never come true..."
Just back home- driving in a blizzard to get there slowed folks down- show started late. Beautiful old theater holding 3,000. Sold out. Very friendly crowd and well-behaved. All the ushers were 70+ and had no idea what they were in for. They were very nice.
Was 6th row left with great view of the entire band. Nice plush seats to enjoy, but not for long.
Show started firing on all cylinders right out of the gate- First 2 tunes smoked and the band was super tight. MNS was 100% better than my last show at the Gorge last summer. Alligator was a treat and John channeled pigpen mightily.
Queen Jane had a funny groove to start but held the high energy throughout. The long night of exuberant sing-a-longs began in earnest.
Duprees smoked- great playing from John. He was using some midi tones throughout the first set for a late '80's feel.
On the road again was fun and fun. The band was having a blast and spent about 2 minutes telling private jokes through the ear monitors before starting.
Hurricane took let some air out of the balloon- unfamiliar tune and John's vox level was low- and a lot of words to not hear very well.
Corrina was sluggish but got a nice groove going near the end. I always find that tune boring.
Don't ease sent me to the bathroom ahead of the crowd.
Second set started hot again with another Pigpen special, this time Bobby doing the honors and doing it well. When he forgot lyrics the crowd filled in with vigor.
Segue to Mississippi was smooth and this tune was the high point of the entire evening- the crowd singing along was almost louder than the band at times. Nice lead work by John and great interplay all evening with Phil & Bobby- they are definitely enjoying having John in the band and let him lead things several times.
I knew Get back was coming as my friendly usher told me they sound checked it earlier. Average bar-band version. Nothing special, except for the initial transition and groove out of Mississippi.
He's gone was a treat and well done with great sing-a-long peaks and valleys in the typical places. So nice to hear all the licks in just the right places with the perfect tone.
Throwing stones was well played but average, and then John surprised Phil & Bobby who both had raised eyebrows and clearly had no idea what was about to happen- a fast, tight, rockin' After midnight in the Clapton style. Searing leads and the sound really came together.
Overall the mix was off until this point and finally gelled. death don't was very well done. Jeff really played well and treated us to a nice B3 solo. Great dynamics.
Shakedown was a complete surprise and was well done but not amazing- or maybe I was getting tired. Figured this would close the set.
Another surprise- Bucket rocked the place and thought plaster would come down from the ceiling at the end.
Ripple was Ripple- very sweet with great harmonies from the girls.
Overall I came home happy, although my wife is upset that I'm staying up late typing this. Oh well
JK hit the grand slam homerun tonight! Thanks Phil Bobby & the rest of the band for serving up the pitch so JK could swing away baBy....swing away! IT'S ALL OF US BABY ALL OF US!!!!
pure arena rock
Wait until you hear this show. I tell you as I stand here JK didnt go off like this at any shows yet...absolutely unbelievable...and I sincerely thank Phil Bobby and the re
st of the band for letting him finally wail like he can and needs to for ALL OF US!!!
Just got back from the show. Music opener was very strong with Bob doing a straightforward rocking version (albeit slwoer paced than GD did it). He didn't do any weird phrasing and sang it well. Alligator, to me, is just one of those tunes that is better left with Pig Pen and the late 60's. This band has 8 people in it and is way too busy to pull it off effectively. Queen Jane was..well...Queen Jane...played and sand well but not exactly what you (or I should say I) wanted to hear. Dupree's was one of the highlights for me...with John singing it great and both John and especially Jeff doing great jams. On The Road Again was also stellar. Weir seemed really into it tonight (more on that later). Hurricane sounded familiar but it took me a while to figure out what they were playing because John's vocals were super low. Corrina I have really liked since I bitched about it at Giants Stadium in '92 and some pretty blonde said I love this song and wound up boogieing with me to it. It's got a special place in my heart and is a different sounding jam for them which in its best versions is almost industrial. Weir totally enjoying himself and singing with gusto. A much better Don't Ease Me In than I ever saw Jerry do...he always seemed to rush through it....they took their time jamming it and Jeff's super piano work is worth checking out. The set break was 45 minutes (the band came on at 7:50 and 1st set was over before 9). Hard to Handle was fun with Bob messing up the most obvious line twice saying on a tleast one occasion "Pretty little thing let me light your head"...weird but it was the first time I have seen Bobby sing this (never saw the Dead do it though did see P&F). 1/2 Step was good with Bobby and John trading verses...hey progress, not perfection...the vocal crowd singing along seemd to limit Bobn's weird phrasing a bit. Tons of kids were sneaking in through the side door (at least 20 that I saw). Parking lot scene was small but crazy...I don't remember that much drugs for a while...white kids offering me coke, X, all kinds of weed, shrooms, acid, shots, nitrous,etc...but hey its a Dead show and there not much to do in Buffalo besides eat wings, party, and watch crappy sports teams...Get Back was a lot of fun...with John taking the majority of the vocals. He's Gone was good with John and Bobby splitting vocal duties...great vocal jam at the end. Bobby actually put his fingers and pulled his mouth up during the nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile....what a cheeseball...he's like a crazy uncle...he's so weird but I love him. Phil's like a quiet but reassuring grandfather. The girls are great and added a long missing dimension to Music Never Stopped and other tunes throughout the evening. After midnight was excellent with some very strong guitar work from John (he sang it). Throwing Stones was a very strong version. Death Don't Have No Mercy was sung by Bob who did a serviceable job but certainly couldn't deliver Jerry's gravitas..still, totally unexpected for me...as were the last couple of songs of the set. Shakedown was good and unexpected at this time in the set. It's also one of those show stopper tunes you don't always expect to see in Buffalo. It seems like I catch it all the time in NYC. and then out of left field Hell in a Bucket. Bobby was totally into it and though a bit disjointed Weir's vocals were very strong....he gave a great effort throughout the night and had me wondering if he's sold his soul to still be able to be doing this at this level. Ripple was a great choice for a closer. Extremely well played and Bobby did a good job on the vocals (with the help of the others). I heard the 2nd set of Barton on the XM...though that was probably a little better played...this show seemed to have a lot more energy. This band is great and I think the youngblood is keeping Bobby and Phil fresh. They truly seemed happy...which was nice. A good show!
I disagree, the Alligator was old school and awesome, a definate highlight of the set, only wish they would have let john sing the caution too...i thought I heard phil trying to begin caution,
On the other hand I thought Bob nailed the Death Don't, and I didn't think he would as it began and I realized it wasn't John singing like in Atlanta. This one actually might benefit if Bob, Phil and John split verses, like in 89
Thanks for the reviews from way up North!
"That ain't nothin' but ten-cent lovin." Missed it by that much! (Apologies to Maxwell Smart.)
See y'all tonight at the Verizon Wireless Arena and tomorrow night at the Mullins Center. Goooooooo Furthur!
this is why I love Dead shows, one guy says Alligator didn't work and the next guy says Alligator totally worked! LOL
That IS my dream set list
Wish I was freezing there.
Nice reviews drive safe to Manchester. Which I think is gonna be big. See you all there tonight.
Thank you Jim and Pinman for the reviews. They are helping me look forward to this evening!
Ted and Jen, maybe we'll run into each other tonight. Hope each of you has a good show.
I am sitting in 104 and will be wearing my SYF swooping owl tye dye in honor of the White Mountains If the back of the floor is open I will jump into that fray for sure.
This show is currently being streamed at gdradio.net enjoy!

couple of these shows really stand out, with this one of them
Just sat here and listened to it on gdradio. I have not been this excited in a long long time. This summer could be HUGE

thanks for the reviews!
best one yet I think
the jam was leading into Dark Star after the 'after midnight', melting nicely, until someone yelled loudly, during the quiet part, he yelled "st stephen"!...my guess is that Darkstar was on the original set list, and they audibled out into Death dont after whomever it was that jinxed the darkstar. We will never know.
