Took the kids for their b-day as one is a big Petty fan. Had decent seats...but every seat at the bowl is...only my second time there. Come to find out though, that the long time policy of b.y.o. alcohol and glass is not allowed at "leased" events. So for the big rock shows, no picnic, (which is 1/2 the reasson i chose that venue...so i bought my $11 Dos Equis... :-(
anyhoo...was looking forward to both. Winwood was great, although they did the "opening band is 40% more turned down volume-wise"....however he did "I'm a Man, along w/ re-worked aka better, higher love and high life...ending with Dr. Mr. Fantasy...thank you...pretty nice set, but venue less than 1/2 full at that point, ,low volume....
1st time seeing Petty...and he was on his game. I'm not a huge fan or anything, but he's fine...I "like" him...but what really stood out was the band, Campbell's no slouch and neither is that Benmont cat...both stood out. Petty was a good front man...and told the audience that all their friends and fam. where there so they had to play well...
they did most of the hits of course, w/ a Sweet William?, petty said its only on a live Euro album or something....but after about 4 songs, they brought Winwood back out for a terrific and (highlight of the show,)....Blind Faith's "Can't Find My way Home"..then a pretty good "Gimme Some Lovin'"........
Kids had a blast and was a fun rock and roll show...being outdoors at the amazing Bowl added to the nice time, nice weather and plenty of eye candy....chicks dig Tom.
I've seen Petty and Winwood a number of times. I'll be catching them again in Omaha. Peace.
Petty and Winwood at The Gorge.. 8th row in August. I am stoked. Camping, of course. It will be a long, strange day to be sure.
