im here , my last show of the tour, sad but happy, never been there before ....im psyched

snow shot was sunday with trey no?
yes, the 2-12-06 snow show, threw it in for memories sake...one of the best nights of my life, 2 feet snow, 3 hours to get 70 miles in a blizzard, ground zero in the snow... hotel suite 1 block away, great pizza, champagne, kynd nugs, fresh dose and a 1/2 full beacon (to start)...priceless.
that whole P&F run was great. miss joan's vocals and smile.
Cant wait for RCMH !!!!!
Any chance they treat us to a little acoustic set ?
Was hoping they saved the Comes a Time for NYC....
Guess we'll have to settle for Attics ;)
Lets give them a warm NYC welcome
will do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my first time here, it only holds 6k, i thought it was more, excellent (in Mr. Burns voice)
Do they serve beer inside here?
>>Do they serve beer inside here?
Yes and booze. There are multiple bars on all levels. Really expensive and long slow lines.
Psyched. Flying up tomorrow. Weather looks shite, but that just means we should get a blazing Cold Rain & Snow .
Best place near RCMH to get really good (and local?) beer pre show?
that just means we should get a blazing Cold Rain & Snow . >>>>>>
i thought that at Stabler 2-15 as it snowed before we went in, and after the show, and no CR&S....best tease ever was 2-12-06 as above, p&f played the jam and song without the vocals, what a night...hoping 4 some same energy 2/23/10
the only real bar i can think of around there is jimmy's corner 44th between 6th and 7th. everything else around there is real touristy.
i never go in early that show i go in an hour early and am treated to trey and sless{on pedal steel}jaming for about 45 min anybody else catch that?
They are all similarly priced for the Broadway crowd and tourists in the immediate area. Have to walk over to 8th Ave / 9th ave if you want to find a local-type bar.
Playwrights on 49th (north end of times square) has always done wonders for me. Just don't eat there ;)
Yeahhh McD - that was a spooky pedal steel thing he did pre-show. Pretty neat stuff. And we're all in for a treat after that pure-gold at Utica!
am treated to trey and sless{on pedal steel}jaming for about 45 min anybody else catch that?>>>>
yeah we were spent and just getting off an went in early ...walked by and thought, cool jam with a roadie and sless, then it hit me , its Trey, great way to start a show
Jimmy's corner is great and cheap.
preshow at jimmy's?
Not sure I'll have time but if I do will stop in at Jimmy's corner for one (or three).
Maybe we'll get a looks like rain tonight
Scarlet>Fire to warm us up tonight...I think it is Dew as well?
Black throated wind would be grate as well
It's Stack Time! You know who you are!!
Can't wait for tonight!!

Usually done at midnight. Only saying cause I'm from there. Smok'n gets you Kicked the f..k out unless you are backstage. My experience. 40 years of shows so I think I know, maybe not. Great accoustics. WISH I was THERE. Enjoy:-)
get in the groove and let the good times roll, were gonna stay here till we soothe our soul, if it takes all night long
1200 is good show time
*tick tock*
save althea and samson for tomorrow!

Here we go
"Maybe we'll get a looks like rain tonight"
"Black throated wind would be grate as well"
Geez, you guys got guts to say it on Philzone, but I would almost die to hear those two songs. Best of Bob for sure. Good luck. Hope they play it for you.

>Does anyone doubt this band now...?
There will always be sad, creepy folks that are unable to admit seeing magic (even when it happens right in front of their own eyes), but for the most part, this band has been a huge success.
If anything, Bob and Phil have set the proverbial bar pretty damn high for their future projects. Hopefully they just ride out the rest of their careers with this outfit and they don't regress to other - less fulfilling - lineups.
For me, this is the best music Deadland has witnessed since 1993 or so.

"Hopefully they just ride out the rest of their careers with this outfit and they don't regress to other - less fulfilling - lineups." - Jeff H,
“Well, Furthur’s going to be around for a while, I expect. It’s working well. And so all those other configurations [Ratdog, PAF, The Dead] are going to be fighting for time, ‘cause right now, this is our hot hand.......so this is where my interests and intent are.” - Bob Weir Feb. 2010
>I like both the last incarnation of The Dead AND Furthur. Two great variations on a marvelous old theme. As long as they keep delivering the goods, I'll keep getting back in line for more!
Of course I would attend any local show with any band with Bob and/or Phil, but for me Furthur is just so much better than TD. I love vintage Billy as much as any other red-blooded American, but he simply cannot do what Joe Russo is doing these days. Was BK "better" than Russo 1970-1995? Of course. Even in 2000, 2003 and 2004, BK was top notch. That said, something has really happened to his playing in the past few years. He was a shell of his former self with TD09. That said, feel free to disagree.
I'll take what I can get. Love it!
I'll take Molo, thank you very much.

Lots of covers, good use of venue, good show.
I arrived in the middle of Midnight Hour and was a little perplexed that you could hardly hear it in the lobby. What I heard of it inside sounded good and bouncy at first but the jam before the last verse kinda faded and the song petered out but had its moments.
The rest of the set was choppy at times though Race Is On, Masterpiece, and especially Dear Mr. Fantasy were welcome by me since I had seen them in a while.
Dear Mr. Fantasy had a couple of decent jams and at the end it slowed down to a spacey jam that sounded like it might be Mountains or a Weir ballad but it got stymied by Phil who just kinda let go of it. Then Phil egged Jeff into a solo that was really cool and it looked like Phil was going to take into something interesting (maybe Gimme Some Lovin?) but than Bob took over and it was Two Djinn which meandered a lot but ended in a nice again bouncy Phil jam which was nice to hear and rare for this somewhat creaky set.
Was surprised that it kept going with Sampson which was as well played as any I heard in the first set. Really sweet.
Second set to me was almost all engaged full throttle -- Good Bob song selection for the most part all night and he did a really good job on Viola (full version). A couple of really long out there jams by JK, Bravo on Viola all around. Shakedown I thought I heard coming to open the set (also heard ChinaCat) so it wasn't a surprise to hear and it was well done all around with JK again shining.
Speaking of JK, he pretty much saved Hard To Handle which really should be covered by a soulful madman like Pig Pen or Toots Hibbert but in the hands of a vitamin popping Marin county dude a la Bobby it sounds a tad cheesy and forced.
Placement of Deal was questionable but was an upbeat version like a good old Deal should be.
Mason's Children is a risk and when they are not firing on all cylinders can be a little rough but they almost pulled it out perfectly and was nice to hear Phil sing for a change (he didn't sing much up til then).
I like Days Between but it was slow and just didn't work for me at that moment but who's to complain, they came though in the clutch with a soaring Let It Grow (this is why you hire John K). Help>Slip>Franklin's was a perfect end to a show that kept getting stronger as they went on. I had my doubts during the first set but left wanting more. (though not enough to stick it out for JBG on a school night -- had it been Box or Brokedown I woulda stayed).
Good job by the crew at the venue. Kept the freaks in check and kept the beer lines moving. They made a fortune at $4.50 for a bottle of Dasani.
Just a decent show, imho, compared to Manchester and esp Amherst. Looks great on paper, but it didn't seem like the band was as hooked up as they usually are. Don't get me wrong- it was a ton of fun, obviously. Hard to go wrong with this band and this room, but I think tomorrow is going to be the real gem.
As an aside, the sewer pipe vids during viola lee and the barbed wire vids during let it grow were pretty harsh.

I can't compare to the other shows since this was my first of the tour but I thought tonight was a really, really good show with the highlights being the opening sequences of both the first and second set and let it grow, h>s>f to close it down. Some of the song placement was a bit strange but the whole point with this music is to expect the unexpected, i kinda dig how they shuffle up the songs as opposed to 80s/90s dead where everything was pretty much iron clad in terms of position in the set.
Chimenti can freakin play, man is a beast.
As mentioned above, there were more than a handful of points where the band (particularly Bobby and Phil) seemed a bit hesitant and confused onstage, with one or the other giving a shrug of the shoulders but nothing came close to derailing the train completely off the tracks.
Can't wait for tomorrow so they can complete TOO.
Drew it is rcmh in manhattan how coul you say "just a decent show" remember that it is only as good as your personal space, you had to be tired or something. I was not even there and can feel that this show was hot. They don't play 11 second set songs just to make it look good. Sorry but "decent show" I saw the Manchester list it was academic as was my last show in amhrst. In fairness I live in NYC and am bitter because my workade me go to Pittsburgh pa and I was in NFL all fm day! Home for the show manana. Stephen and scarlet fire then.
I was there. Viola Lee & Let it Grow Rocked!!!
JK was on!
The lights & video screen were the best hey have had all tour.
Drew - this show blew away Amherst & Manchester!
I was at those also.
Definitely agree. This was miles beyond Manchester, which was shaky at best. This had one or two shaky moments early in the first set, but this was played so well with such high energy that they had to give us a break with days between and let it grow.
Anyone know why they didn't take a bow tonight? Had to get off-stage at exactly 11:30?
I really hope we get a full-blown TOO and We Bid You Goodnight tomorrow!
the show was fine
the light show was excellent
the band is very tight and they are playing well together.
most people seemed to be having a good time
just got back set two totally rocked face, the days between> let it grow was awesome
Videos?
Now THAT'S cheesy.
has no one else noticed that phil went back to his old bass?????????????
when did this happen?
this was my first show since asbury.....
I thought the show was great.
Just got home. I thought it was a terrific show.
Remember the old days when the band would gel and the crowd would get into sync with them and start dancing in a frenzy and whootin' and hollerin' and then the band would take it to the next level as a result of the crowd energy and everyone really got off and we called it "it" or "The X Factor" or "magic?" Well, that just doesn't happen any more. If the GD played a show like this it would have ripped the roof off the place.
In my area, a little in front of the SBD on the John side, about 40% of the people were sitting during the Deal. Masons starts...not Uncle John's Band...a little unfamiliar to some, so another 20% of the people plotz down. (I was tired too). So it kind of saddens me because I remember how it used to be and how the audience used to inspire the band to greater hights. But, that being said, the music was GREAT! The band already sounds very together to me. In set I I enjoyed John's playing but I found myself wanting him to really cut loose and take some out front leads (a la Jerry). But I really digged him cutting it up in the 2nd set.
I'm loving the setlists as of late but the repertoire seems a little more limited than during the Dead tour. I understand the rationale of trying to "teach the new guys" and all that, but I would rather see them stretch more and fail miserably than to play it safe. I guess I'm just trying to invent something to complain about here. With a show like tonight, who can complain about set lists and song choices?
some random comments:
Jam >
The Other One Jam > What a way to open!
Playin' In The Band > (silky smooth transition into AM) I didn't even notice it until the vocals and then there they were.
After Midnight
They Love Each Other sweet. Hey, break out the 73 version!
When I Paint My Masterpiece very nicely done, but it seemed like there was work the backup vocalists should have been doing but didn't know that they should be singing something.
The Race Is On
Dear Mr. Fantasy with a very clear Hey Jude quote from John.
> Jeff solo (very jazzy and very amusing to Phil) GIVE ME MORE OF THIS. UNEXPECTED, UNSCRIPTED, IMPROVISED, YES!
Two Djinn seemed a little long and repetetive but it went into some interesting places. There was a section towards the end where they seemed to be really emphasising the rhythm with unison lines. This might really develop into a hot tune with some work.
Samson & Delilah very unexpected. great place for it in the set. Bobby started with the wrong verse and then corrected himself. I thought it was a strong version.
I really dug the lights/visuals by the way. The three ball effect especially was really neat and as they changed size it almost looked like a Mickey Mouse head a couple times for just a split second.
Set 2 fuckin'wow. Especially the Shakedown
Viola Lee Blues Yeah, John played a little China Cat quite by accident. It didn't seem like that's where he wanted to take it or anything, it's just what his fingers happened to play.
Shakedown Street Hot. Anyone know the origin of that "shakeitdownshakeitdownshakeitdownnow" quote? I think it's from some 70's funk tune, but I would like to know.
Hard To Handle Bobby sung this really well I thought, but I think he's just paraphrasing some of the lines. I don't think Otis Redding or Pigpen or Chris Robinson sung some of those words. I'm not talking about improvising or scat singing. I'm talking about he just doesn't know how some of the lines are supposed to go.
Deal I thought it was going to be Truckin' but was very happy it was Deal. Were there any NY songs sung tonight?
Mason's Children Phil was really into singing it.
Days Between What can I say, it should have been a Morning Dew. Other than that it was strong. Bobby's singing was fine. He made 1-2 minor vocal flubs
Let It Grow Yeah, I thought it could end the set too. Was this set really long or was it just my perception? Phil was mildly miffed that Bobby & John brought it down during the jam when he wanted it to go on longer. He took one of his patented "well this is a good time for a drink until these losers are ready to jam some more" breaks.
Help On The Way > I thought the closer was very strong and very tight. Crisp transitions. Not very spacy but very rockin'
Slipknot! > Again, tight, tight, tight.
Franklin's Tower I think Phil came in earlier than expected on one of the verses and that kind of dented the energy a little, but it recovered nicely.
And again, not to beat a sleepy, aging, half-dead horse (get it?), but it's not like the hot Franklins' lit the place up with energy. Sure people were standing and swaying and you could see some people actually lifting their feet off the ground while dancing (very few), but...it's just not like it used to be. And please spare me the inevitable "you don't have to make noise and jump around for there to be energy" comments. When the sex is so good that you have to scream and when the music is so good that it makes you scream and when everyone is getting off and everyone is screaming because the band it magically pulling it out of them...those were special moments that transcended "watching a bunch of guys on a stage playing instruments and singing." I know what it used to be and what it could be and what it's not and I feel the need to comment on it because that "X Factor" was one of the things that was so special about the GD experience. But life is good and I am blessed and I can thoroughly enjoy the music this band is cranking out both live as well as on CD. Don't want to give the wrong impression. I loved tonight and can't wait for my next 3 shows.
Donor Rap
Enc: Johnny B. Goode I had to leave to catch my train so I didn't see. Glad it wasn't Eleanor Rigby or some other monster breakout that I missed.
See you tomorrow for the Ramble on Rose and Truckin' and all the New York songs.
plush cushy theater seats on a tues night make for a mellow scene which is ok to me, not that I was there but will be next tues with plush velvety seats. if they would only recline.
it can be the way it used to be as it was at Rothbury last year.
set 2 cued up to play now, finally

^^^ nice, dig the WOS image behind the band. Have they been doing that the whole tour ? I don't recall that image in Asbury ...
Nice pics Rob. Love the Wall of Sound projection behind Furthur. Very cool! I would love to hear your impression of the show.
Wewantphil: Thanks for the detailed review. Sounds like a great show, as they have all been on this tour, for the most part. Wish I could have been there, but unfortunately I could only catch one show this time, which was early on in Atlanta (where there was dancing everywhere, since the floor was SRO).
The "shakeitdownshakeitdownshakeitdown" line they are using in the current version of Shakedown Street is pretty similar to the phrasing in the North Mississippi Allstars song "Shake Em On Down" and it reminded me of that when I heard it, fwiw.
I was not able to listen to the 365 stream last night and am looking forward to listining to this show soon. Great setlist.
The stacks are wayyyyy up high. I mean way up high. Never seen nothing like it.
highlight? O One>>After Midnight
>>but it's not like the hot Franklins' lit the place up with energy. Sure people were standing and swaying and you could see some people actually lifting their feet off the ground while dancing (very few), but...it's just not like it used to be.
---------------------------------------------
NYC and radio city aren't exactly inexpensive so that means an audience with a lot of older folks there who are probably burnt on the song. I guarantee if they played help slip franklins at Coney Island it will be a whole different animal.
I see a lack of energy at a lot of dead shows, but don't care because it comes from within. The people who buy the seats up front from scalpers aren't exactly young whippersnappers anymore.
i had a great time but lets all be honest...it was good...it wasnt bad and it wasnt great...it was good....definately tonight is going to rock and i will be there...total trainwreck during transition on masterpiece....best part was definately 2nd set...weakest link was hard to handle...i personally loved masons children ...let it grow and help slip franks....jb goode ? should have been pride of cucomonga or box.....im begging please dont play us blues encore tonight...we all want st.stephen>the 11> dew.....brokedown encore....again...had a great time...8 $ for a beer but we are in nyc...i thought i got a great deal to park the car for 25$...
show was ok. If anybody thinks this was amazing or great im not sure what you were on. A lot of shaky parts and a lot of the jams lack some kind of powerful energy.
Jeff Chiemnti stole the first set and the john k played really well in the 2nd. those 2 guys have a nice chemistry going. It was nice to hear john k singing a majority of the jerry tunes.
Looking forward to tonight.
forgot to mention...phil was bombing away all night. he really sounded great. I like the tone on that older bass...i was happy not to see that glowstick one.
franklins tower was amazing last night!
the light show was the best i've seen so far
Amazing show. Terrible, terrible crowd. Perfect sound. Unlike Barton or Utica, there were not many young people there to bring the energy. I don't think half the crowd knew most of the songs. The jamming was SO locked in last night. If anyone does NOT think this show was sick, I don't know what you were on.
Last night's show was easily one of the best shows I've ever seen. Period. I've seen over 150 with Jerry and over 100 without Jerry. If you weren't able to wrap your arms around and love last night's show, I'm afraid you never will. Unless perhaps you change your psychoactive recipe. The first 5 songs of the second set were ridiculous.
"Last night's show was easily one of the best shows I've ever seen."
I can't help but think how much better it would be if Phil just joined DSO.
Just wanna say thx to TRob...listening to the second set now, u r the man.
Some random thoughts.
Love RCMH. My first trip there, incredible building, the place is one giant speaker.
Crowd in our section was nuts. Old heads, young heads, in between. Mezzanine 2 in the 300's was smokin'.
One major impression I came away with was we do NOT have tempo problems anymore. I thought Bob did an awesome job on Hard to Handle, Samson, and even Days. He does that tune justice now, JMHO before you flame on.
After Midnight was smokin' fast a la Clapton's original.
TLEO awesome. What more do you people want? Phenom. Go John.
mr Fantasy had a strong Jude tease coming out, thought they would pull it out, it 'felt' more right than it did listening to the Barton stream when they audibled away from it.
1st set had some nice pee break/bar trip songs ;^) Thank you Bob.
2nd set highlights, Masons (rocked, though I get why people would be unfamiliar with this one), everything from Days on was IT. Tight, fast, in synch with some serious reaching jams. Not sure why the crowd in some sections didn't rise up to meet Franklins, our section was gettin' down, everybody on their feet groovin.
Take away: agree about odd song placement, throws you off. I think this is a good thing however as the place this band takes me is Grateful Dead space, which calls up the old expectations of the 'formula'.
Tempo: more than enough, fast fast fast in a lot of places.
Jams: still got plenty of room to stretch, not sure what they are waiting for, perhaps the appropriate crowd feedback to go there?
Tonight should be a barn burner.
where's the audio at from last night?
oh yeah, forgot about the light system. Definitely saw some new stuff, looks like they have a killer system that they've barely scratched the surface with so far.
Between Bob's comments in the interview, the playing quality, got to expect more touring out of these guys. By summer I think we'll see full melt down space jamming with some nice psychedelia.
>>Unlike Barton or Utica, there were not many young people there to bring the energy.
the one flaw to the small, intimate venues of this tour...
that W.O.S. visual is freaking awesome!!!! please bust that out in chitown!!!!
excellent well played show. these guys are infinitely tighter than last year at hammerstein, they're really coming together into a single organism. i agree with the review saying chimenti owned the first set and JK the set.
But to me, the real break out was..... Phil. The sound system, the new bass, Radio CIty's perfect accoustics? Why i don't know. BUt you could hear and feel his playing like, frankly, I don't when it was last like that. Fantastic.
Big plus to the RCMH staff which was super chill. Smelled like an old school rock concert in there!
>small hall no energy?. phil never nad that problem wonder why?
"Shakeitdownshakeitdownshakeitdownshakeitdown-now"
Originally from The Commodores - "Brick House" 1977
From what I have listened to before last night, I was little disappointed. I thought the setlist was fun but as a band - they really didn't com together at all in the first set. The Viola Lee >Shakedown was tremendous and I thought the 2nd set was about to go up in smoke. Bobby actually delivered Hard to Handle quite nicely, but I really needed a Jerry ballad after that. Dont get me wrong - I love Deal - but was really looking for a Ship of Fools, Crazy Fingers to give the set some character.
I can now understand the complaints I have read about Bobby's take on Days Between. Very nicely delivered but can definitely see how some people can be taken back by it.
Very low energy and strange night. The H>Slip>Franklins was just a bonus at that point.
Hoping they CRUSH IT tonight. I know from the tapes that they can. Hope all the NYC jitters are gone.
This was a KILLER, I repeat, KILLER show...We were in the nosebleeds and WE thought it was KILLER! Most everyone we spoke to in our crowd(of about 90 people) thought this was KILLER. Don't know what the talk was of energy but there was plenty of brilliant jazz/funk/rock stuff going down(and I am a working musician so I DO know music like this). Tons of energy...loose spaces to dance in...THIS was KILLER.
I think a lot of the problem with the lack of energy is the result of the hesitation of older fans to 'buy in' to this incarnation. JK is excellent, but the fact is that he does sound a lot like Jerry in his singing and playing. While that is a nice thing to see, hear and celbrate, it give me an uneasy feeling that is hard to articulate. I feel that I want to let go and fly with the music. However, I repeatedly find myself thinking that this band sounds good, but there is a cover band feel because everything IS being played so close to the original arrangements.
With Phil and Friends and Ratdog and even TOO and The Dead there was enough distinclty different sound and, in some cases, arrangement of the music to keep it old and familiar yet refreshingly new. Those bands left me feeling as if the music was being kept alive and explored furthur.
With this band I find that it seems kind of tired and old because it sounds too much like the GD.I know, that sounds crazy to complain about, but I think that is it.
I think Phil is playing better than ever, Bob is doing as well as can be hoped and the rest of the band members are all(even JL) excellent and capable musicians.
Still, looking forward to any chance to see Phil and Bob together, and I am psyched for Saturday at the Taj.
The lack of energy was all in the crowd. The music on stage was killer. Old, casual NYC crowd = fat drunk Wall Street bozos sitting down and talking during the jamming then bitching about how much it sucked. Thankfully, the acoustics in that hall are such that you dont hear them in your ear all night and can space out and enjoy the show.
I had a blast at this show - went in to the city late w/o tickets, and scored a pair of aisle seats in row WW for face right at show time. I thought the band was way tight throughout, with great interactions within the band and with the audience. no lack of energy on the floor; folks were up and dancing the entire show (yes, even for Days Between). LOVED the light show; the spinning three orbs, the flaming rocks into molten lava (end of Let it Grow?) and ending with the wall of sound pic (with Jerry in the corner) was a fine way to end it. Many ripping moments, with one of my highlights being the end of Dear Mr. Fantasy - JK tore it up! Good song selection.
funny, i had fat drunk hillbillies from who knows where with the worst southern accent slobbering all over the place with his bowling ball shaped wife falling all over the place. still the best show i've been to, favorite crowd so far was at stabler i think.
Thanks, misingfinger (Misingfinger)! Brick House. Now that you mention it...of course.
The Zen Tricksters and P&F w/Barraco would sometimes take the Shakedown into a little Miles Davis Jeanne Pierre jam (JP is from one of MD's 1980's albums-Live Miles I think). That would be cool to hear again.
I guess I'm in the minority here. I didn't
get that show...and I don't get this band.
I've seen just about every post-Jerry project
involving Phil and/or Bob...and this has gotta
be the closest I've seen them come to a glorified
cover band.
The name 'Furthur' is a silly, silly, ironic
misnomer which I'm sure does not go over
Phil's head.
I feel like I can read Phil's body language
when he's excited on stage...and he looked
bored to me last night.
I don't blame JK for what he does. He's clearly
very good and studied at what he does. I blame
Phil and Bob for inviting JK to mix what he does
with what they do. What's the point...really?
Often times, when I've seen post-Jerry projects,
I've thought...boy, I bet Jerry would LOVE this
stuff! I don't think this is the case here.
I think he would be fairly confused and
weirded out by it.
This concert would be great for people that want
to hear their favorite good ol' songs played
in a very similar same style that they remember
their good ol' Grateful Dead...without too much
new-fangled re-working or adjusting. But...don't
we already have the DSO orchestra for that?
After so many riveting Phil & Friends shows...
and the recent Dead tour...how can anyone see
this band as anything but pure (and almost
cynical) nostalgia?
Ok...that's just my opinion. Did I like anything?
I haven't heard Bob's voice sound so good...
maybe...ever? His delivery on Masterpiece
was stunning. And...he NAILED Days Between
in a very powerful way last night. He got
inside of that song. He flubbed the lyrics
on a peak part...but he still killed on
the song overall.
Russo and Lane sounded fantastic...as did
Chimenti. He really did steal the show at times.
Ok...everybody back to your respective solo
projects!
Love that Phil played his old bass last night.
I agree that his old bass has a much better tone
and it has a little more Umph than the new bass.
I hope he plays it again tonite.
I wonder if he switched if for the Radio City room or maybe Robbie Taylor just sent the new ones out for a tune-up?
"I think a lot of the problem with the lack of energy is the result of the hesitation of older fans to 'buy in' to this incarnation"
Or could it be that some feel that Bobby Weir is a weak link in the equation causing the "lack of energy?" Or the drummers don't hold up compared with either Billy or Mickey or John Molo? Don't get me started on those girls. What do they do again? Phil, Jeff, and John are being weighed down by these other factor. Don't believe it? Listen.
I will say this though....the lights are a million times better.
Todd - you are a minority! Get a clue! Phil's body language?
He was not bored, he was comfortable. And Weir as well.
JK gives Phil & Booby that opportunity to just sit back and play now, like when they played with Jerry.
This is the best post-jerry incarnation yet!
I hope Phil keeps playing the modulus bass - more better bombs IMO. He seemed to have the two new ones ready in back of the stacks - you could see the heads over the top of his monitor. I was not missing the blue light distraction. And I agree with spike (and others) that JK allows Bob to do what he does best - killer rhythm with occasional leads. I tend to under-appreciate Bobby, but last night he was great. Phil was outstanding, of course.
Are you guys for real?
many of these arrangements are completely different the grateful dead...
the reason John is in the band is because he can bring the light out from Phil and Bob!
there playing has been better than ever because of John... because they can feel that space as they once did. John is John... that's how his playing sounds even if he was playing something very far from Grateful Dead music...
I think Furthur is a great name as well... an ode to Neal and the whole 60's Renaissance..
>>>I can't help but think how much better it would be if Phil just joined DSO.
Won't happen.
Phil hates DSO and now John does too.
Some great reviews here and you can see that for many of the faithful the jury is still out. I sensed this in Ithaca but honestly these are Jerry's songs and this band is playing them the way they were written and should be played IMHO.
That is not a cover band, I mean the majority of "cover bands" ,including DSO, are in the rear view mirror big time.
This band knows how to create and propel the "X" factor which is timeless.
I mean honestly you can't even compare this band to the Dead last spring. This band is so much more all over it and so much better.
I mean if you have not heard the Morning Dew from Ithaca it smokes any of the ones Warren or Bobby sang last year.I mean those were cover versions.
The 365 feed Taperrob provided, thanks, had some amazing stuff the entire 1st set. I mean the After Midnight was ripping. Bobby's covers were perfect as well.
I am sure many,of the hometown faithful, compared last night to the MSG show of last year, which was one of the best of that tour, but also featured alot of sloppy playing as well.
If you can't get into now then that is ok, your loss. I hope the band delivers a even better show tonight for you all tonight, which they WILL.
Honestly when they get to Mohegan on Friday the energy will be through the roof, since many of us going there have seen some of the previous gems of this tour and will be very well rested.
Plus there are plenty who have not seen this band and who have heard of the "buzz" and are going be open and ready, especially after that killer show in Wallingford, and that will be quite exciting.
As Jack Nicholson once said
Maybe this is as good as it gets?
If that is the case we are still surely blessed
so now its the crowds fault? yeah nyc crouds are so laid back.if the music was on the place would be rockin .again i didnt see many people sittin down at phil at the beacon or any other ny venue.it couldnt be bobby sucking the life out of the place could it?
Good afternoon, friends and lovers! Here is my review of last night's show: http://ferdmania.blogspot.com/
Based on what I'm seeing here, I don't think I'm gonna be stalked by one of you this time around, but I can only hope that will happen again because it was such fun!
Enjoyed your review hopefully they will not " play it safe " for you tonight
>>so now its the crowds fault? yeah nyc crouds are so laid back.if the music was on the place would be rockin .again i didnt see many people sittin down at phil at the beacon or any other ny venue.it couldnt be bobby sucking the life out of the place could it?
No, it wasn't Bobby's fault at all. The show was really well played with great energy, but the older crowd was not interested. I have seen Three shows on this tour and this was by far the most apathetic crowd of the lot. Hell, it was the most apathetic crowd I've seen at a show in years. Lots of rich people over 40 in button down shirts hoping to hear "hits". It was a drag. Bobby did not "suck the life out of the room". That's just absurd vilification. The crowd blew. End of story.
Pretty funny how people complain that this band sounds too much like the grateful dead having complained when phil brought in people who don't sound like the grateful dead or brought new songs (Ryan, Jackie) to the mix.
Those guys were playing some amazing, amazing music last night. Phil's bass sounded incredible. I'm enjoying this ride! Cant wait for tonite!!!!
Pretty funny how people complain that this band sounds too much like the grateful dead having complained when phil brought in people who don't sound like the grateful dead or brought new songs (Ryan, Jackie) to the mix.
I would imagine that these are not the same people. There seem to be two camps in the post-Dead world: the people who want a new adventure, and the nostalgia-lovers who want a trip through the Grateful Dead Museum. The latter won last night, but the fight is far from over.
Lots of rich people over 40 in button down shirts hoping to hear "hits".
It’s been proven that it’s stupidly stereotypical to assume that Deadheads are an open-minded, accepting, non-judgmental group, especially when they readily judge others by their clothing.
Sorry, brah, but some of us have to come to the show straight from work, especially when the show begins before 8:00.
I’m neither rich, nor over 40, but I would like to formally apologize for wearing a shirt with a button-down collar last night. I will not apologize for dancing my ass off through Shakedown, nor will I apologize for remaining standing and blocking the view of people who were not wearing collared shirts during Days Between.
I'm with you, Brian. This 'what you wear' or 'what you look like' stuff is a bunch of crap. Since when did that matter??? Saw a guy last night, dancing around, happily crush a lit cigarette into the carpet of RCMH. 600 section, row PP. I wouldn't think of lumping other people that were dancing with that A-hole. You should all know BY NOW - it's what's inside that counts.
Apologies. That was poorly worded and written in spite. I still think the crowd was unenergetic due to the high ticket prices self selecting a less energetic group, but I could have found a better way to phrase it. Apologies again.
again that is the same crowd more or less thats been going to phil shows. what do you think it a diffrent audience ? and again you gonna tell me the nokia or beacon wasent jumpin? bobbys killed to many shows for me post dead.its all about the music.
Yes I will tell you that. I have seen Phil and Friends and Furthur in many different venues with many different crowds. The crowd a the Hammerstein was all over those shows. It was rowdy and fun, even though Bobby wasn't on his game. It has nothing to do with him.
Hey everyone ,at 51 years (some harder than others) Iam just glad to get my ass to a few shows, and do my pokey version of the "Dance". No longer propelled by artifical means this shuffle works fine for me...it does not reflect my enjoyment of the music. Physical movement is not the barometer satifaction should be measured by

This whole RCMH energy/age/clothing discussion is very funny - What makes me want to sit down is every other "full of energy" smart phone recording / distracting, texting 20 something Pseudo DeadHeads being judgemental in what should be a Real good time. Have fun tonight youngsters!
Well that was judgemental>>>Enjoy the moment...be the moment...experience it. Memories are the source of interesting stories. NYC rocked last night...just enough confused people
I thought it was energetic, well played, some questionable song placement, but good feel. Even though it is obviously Phil's band, he seems happy to have JK carry more of the load. Weir is playing as well as he ever has (save the vocal stylings, which were pretty limited last night). Some nice interplay, not quite 72-74 era between-song jamming, but not too shabby. The thing that I find so amazing is where you are sitting/standing and who you are sitting/standing near can have such an effect on your experience.
i remember when we used to complain about ol' jerr? (he wasnt there, to high, not loud enough, forgot this, left out that blah, blah)..... ha,ha, ha... "the complaining never stops" ...
I had a BLAST! Cant really complain about anything!... Maybe, "The Days Between"...but no matter who sang that (including Jerry) I wouldnt have been too enthusiastic to hear it anyways.(not exactly one of my favorite songs) P.S. I totally agree that Bob's vocal "styling's" were very limited..He sounded pretty good
"I see a lack of energy at a lot of dead shows, but don't care because it comes from within. The people who buy the seats up front from scalpers aren't exactly young whippersnappers anymore."
I noticed it at Hampton, we are all getting older plus alot of us dont ingest things anymore that give us those hours and hours of limitless energy, its still fun going to the shows though.
"JK gives Phil & Booby that opportunity to just sit back and play now, like when they played with Jerry."
I have no problems with this band, but this statement doesn't sound like a virtue to me; more like a vice. I love Phil leading.
>>And...he NAILED Days Between
in a very powerful way last night. He got
inside of that song.
Glad at least one other person heard it this way. I couldn't believe people found this song--the only time all night I felt Jerry in the building--was a downer. Maybe it helps that I moved way up front during this one, so as not to be distracted by all the chatty Cathys
>>And...he NAILED Days Between

inside of that song.
i agree, i was at both RCMH show and like 2-23 better, the 'days' was a huge highlight to me, always one of my favs,,,,nostalgia yes, but only some, its new enough to me on many levels....great tune done very well
+1 to Bobby's Days Between. First time I heard a Bob version of this was waiting to pick up the wife at the airport in the cell phone lot. Came on Sirius, and it hit me like 900,000 tons o' steel coming down the tracks.
I admit it dusted me up. Bob gets the song, and it comes through in his emotional delivery of it. What an incredible song too. So perfectly encapsulates the Grateful Dead experience and especially Jerry's place as the reluctant prince and King of the Dead Heads.
Lots of people just want to rock and roll party. So Days is a downer for them that don't listen.
"forgot to mention...phil was bombing away all night. he really sounded great. I like the tone on that older bass...i was happy not to see that glowstick one."
I miss that bass. I just like how classy/classic it looks. I like the tones a bit more as well. It's not that I don't like the way the lighty piece of abstract art sounds, but I can't deny I miss seeing the old wood on stage.

Better late than never.RCMH second night was epic. If you where there Be grateful these nights dont happen often.
