Cali - Last time I was there, folks were split between the boardwalk (no vending, just loitering), Hard Rock Cafe, and some local bars. My plan was to get some gambling in, but would love hand with some like minded folks. Where's everyone hangin'?

OK this is my (short) take on the whole deal. By the way I love what I'm hearing and I think even most of the die-hard, old timers like me agree that it's good stuff. BUT... It's merely mimicking the Grateful Dead that we used to know. I mean the Dead was defining an era, mostly the '60's and '70's where they were writing and living most of their lives and telling the story (as they saw it) through their music. We must also remember that Robert Hunter had a big part in this as well. I mean look at songs like Truckin, The Other One, Ripple, Uncle Johns etc etc and you can relive what they were experiencing. The trip through psychodlic times and then the mellowing out with their acoustic music. I remember shows when they were starting to get mellow and everyone in the audience was tripping their brains out and all they wanted to hear was St. Stephen and Dark Star and all the Dead wanted to play was camp fire music like Uncle Johns Band, High Time etc.
Then in the late '70's and '80's they wanted to refine their music and get technically tight as a band and by the late '80's and 90's they were great, (some of my favorite shows were in the '90's), but in the latter days they were really mimicking their own past. Ironically enough, Don Henley hit the nail on the head when he said in Boys of Summer-"out on the road today, I saw a dead head sticker on a cadillac, a little voice inside my head said don't look back you can never look back". And that's really it, It is, what it was and we can only try to recapitulate those days the best we can AND enjoy it for god's sake!!
Think about it, do you really think the band now wants to do 4 days in a row to end up in beautiful Utica!! (I'm not knocking Utica as I'm from upstate New York too). I just think they are in a small way recapitulating their past by playing colleges like they started out doing in the late '60's and early '70's. In doing so they are reaching a very young crowd again and leaving it up to them to "further" their legacy as time goes on. So enjoy it as long as they can play as well as they are. I was listening to that epic show from 1970 in the Capitol Theater in New Jersey yesterday on Archive and I mean, they played like 35 tunes HARD and Jerry played with the Riders to boot on pedal steel. No, I was born a couple years too late for that one and was only 13 so I couldn't make those shows so my take on all this may not even be as informative as those who were priviledged to see those early shows. But this is how I see it and I'm still enjoying the "long strange trip" of my own life in relation to all this. Can you Imagine me explaining this stuff to my Dominican wife who wasn't even in this country back in those days!! Now, that's a trip!!
See ya in Chicago!! Happy Birthday Phil!!
Richard I enjoyed reading your perspective but maybe life in general is the act of mimicking?
I think for many of us who got on the bus back in the 80's, we would agree up to a point. I think what the GD/Furthur is still about is something broader and deeper than just the 60's American experience, they tap into a timelessness that clearly vaults them into arena of the "greatest things that have occurred in history" IMHO.
The other thing to add to that is that with out "us" all that would not have happen.
We all have a symbiotic relationship together and the last year shows it is still just as vital and is thriving.
To be present in that right now has always been the fuel, and mantra, for this adventure no matter where its origins are from or where we care to celebrate it.
As for Utica it made for an awful nice concrete and steel church last weekend
Enjoy Chicago.
If I had done it right Ted I would have overnighted in Amherst and hit Utica as well. I knew the show(s) in NYC would be killer but middle of the week coming from Boston at my day job would have been tough. I believe I read your blog from the other day, about your life, going to Humboldt and then coming back. It was sort of similar to my deal, being in Buffalo 1st and hitting shows in the early '70's, then going to Boston for school, hitting the Music Hall shows for the revival of St. Stephen and then taking some time off for grad school between 79 and 83 although I did catch a couple of runs then as well. Then came life's reality check and the day job. Still caught shows between the east coast and let's say, Alpine Valley until of course '95. I guess I experienced what you did but let's say 10 years earlier and like both of us wish we could have been there for the beginning especially for Hendrix etc. But, as I said, you can never look back...only further!! Enjoy the shows you catch!
PS Most of my best friends are in the city, work(ed) at the commodity exchange. You may know some from the shows.
Best to all!! RR
Sorry Ted, I just checked and that was crazyfingers blog around yours yesterday. Maybe he'll chime in today and give another perspective.
Stay well,
RR
Reasy for tonight! stoked
Let's see, easy possibilities to call for A.C. -
"Deal"
"Loser"
"Truckin'"
"Ramble On Rose"
no chance for Truckin or Loser, just played last few. Deal might even be a stretch. Lucky if they get a Death don't though. Hasn't been played since Buffalo. Maybe a Jack Straw opener!
Silvio tonight
Again I smell a Wharf Rat
And they do smell bad in Atlantic City
I'm thinking a One More Saturday Night opener tonight.
Get it the fuck out of the way like in Orlando
yes, out of the way is good. It's like last week when they knew they would do it in Utica. At least they should have closed the set with it and done we bid you as the encore with maybe another tune as well. Instead they closed the set with we bid you and then encored with Saturday night. A slight letdown to a great show!
women r played last night...
opener?
stranger or midnight hour
started yet?
This is a late start on the ticket 8pm so the opener won't be out until @8:20. Stranger could be a good pick.
scheduled to start @ 8 est, so it might be a few more minutes...
depending on jill, of course... ;}
OMG! LOL Where is Reaper?
Are they gonna close it in grand style on the boardwalk again?
Haven't heard Aiko in awhile either. Hmmmm
either a Wharf Rat, Stella Blue, So Many Roads, or China Doll will be played tonight..
Ted, good to have ya back. Are you in the building?? I think we are gettin a Stella tonite!!
No I am home on the couch You all have a ball. This band loves to play by the sea
Maybe another China> Jerry gem> INYR tonight? In the first set would be sweet. Think you are gonna get another Rueben & Cherise tonight, maybe Estimated as well.

Maybe everyone is best served with shorter tours? Are they running out of steam?
wouldnt you if you were in your 60s?
tell them mike
They're saving it for chitown!
Nothing seems wrong to me with this set so far, plenty of upbeat tunes and a couple nice ballads
I too am hoping for a Chicago explosion back into the fold. $75 a pop ain't pocket change. A setlist like that wouldn't exactly make me excited to hit night #2.
Big fan of these guys and this particular band. Just weird to see how these sets have been playing out.
I don't know guys... They've been playing everything pretty damn thorough and ultra-tight.. Sometimes that set on paper doesn't do the music justice - either way.
A good example is Promised Land from 12.30. Um, not normally a tune that I would be overjoyed with. But they f'ing slayed it quick and easy that night. In fact, that was kind of the chatter of the break... "wow - that Promised land was the shit!"
I would imagine that Crazy>Cumberland had some hair for sure.
Set II:

I agree. It doesn't really matter what they play ...its how it is played.
My band from the 60's can beat up any band from the 70;s

I was at Barton, Utica and the two RCMH shows. The last night at RCMH was by FAR the best, and they were ALL good shows. That second set was beyond good. Listening to the show now on LMA and it sounds so sweet!

let's hope we're treated to something a bit nicer than either of these, though the 17-minute, elongated Dear Mr.Fantasy from earlier in the tour was nice. I want to see a couple of Bona Fide Grateful Dead shows, circa '67-'77. Got ZERO interest in hearing these fellas do Beatles or Dylan. The 80s and 90s were just fine, but I definitely don't have any desire to hear that type stuff again. I'd honestly rather hear Adams and Ratdog tunes. At least they can do something creatively worthwhile with them.
Amazing looking 2nd set they got there.
You boys are right...the new york shows sounds real good. New york always gets good shows. I remember seeing the ABB at the beacon w/Betts in 1999...great time. They don't sound right without him, but I digress.
Thank for the setlists updates and picture!!

Dude....Alpine Valley would be sweeeeeeeet! 3 Day Event, now I'm getting greedy.
chicago blues for allah. HSF, wang dang, rooster
Smokin' ending I am sure everyone was howlin' for more.
I've read that the summer tour might involve two nights at Charter One Pavilion at Northerly Island. Phil smoked that place the last time he played there.
charter one would rock. phil loves that place. Alpine would be great... dont think that will happen though.
Oh Zeno...that is by far one of my favorite venues....no doubt! A beautiful view of the city and the Last place Jerry played (which looks like a spaceship). Good choice!
yes. grate venue. right on the lake, skyline in the background.
zeno, that is an actual rumor about chicago this summer? where did you read? p.s. you are cool with your opinion, mine is a little different, and of all the shows I saw, including AP, new years run, atlanta, ashville, barton hall, buffalo...the strawberry fields ashville might be my favorite moment of all the shows, ive seen furthur play so far

nice graphic!!!!!
Just got in from AC. I can't say enough about that second set. The "rockin" bridge into the second verse of Dark Star sort of Dancin' In The Strets like) was simply an unusal, unforeseeable, savory, and downright amazing highlight. As much as the opening of the first set worried me, (4 Bobby songs in a row), the set did take off during I Need A Miracle. This band is more often worth the price of admission several times over, than not. No doubt some rouygh spots every so often, or acceptable, but almost throw-away renditions, but other times just as good as about anything they've (Phil and Bobby, with a new guitar player who can truly do justice to that missing man's spot) ever done. Photos soon to follow.
I listened to the entire second RCMH show and the first set of tonight on the drive there and back. Music so good it made the time pass easily. And for those who have been trying to hold up Tuesday to Wednesday (or, shudder the thought, said Tuesday was better), it seems the consensus of several I spoke with tonight who saw every show on this tour, they all said Wednesday was one of the two or three best shows of this tour. Atlanta got mention as did Buffalo. I have yet to hear either of those, but I'd have to put tonight's second set right up there as a contender too with any other set of music they've done. I'd say the one song that held back the first set more than any other was King Bee; Bobby just shouldn't do it the way he tried it and I thought he had some many fine moments on other songs (though of course he forgot a line in one of his own - Miracle, as I recall).
Just a few to hold things over until I can really dig into what I shot in AC....
Miracle wasn't even played and was a highlight? Jesus, that's scary.
Excuse me; a drive home ending at almost 6AM will turn Hell In A Bucket into MIrcale pretty quickly!
Besides you know all those songs Bobby wrote sound the same!
Check the blog Ted at 10:47 I almost called it right on! I went to bed so I didn't see it until now. Dark Star Stella (I didn't figure Unbroken Chain but then they did it right by ending the set with OMSN. I called attics encore but I'd take GLORIA too! Nice Set.
Sounds like they did a syncopated Dark Star last night, which is how they bridged into and wrapped up the second verse in Amherst. Definitely catches you off guard when they do it but I think it works, and works nicely.
^^^^^^^^^^^
Synchopated is the word! It sounded like they were doing Dancing In The Streets on their way into the second verse. Offguard? How about amazed? Respect!
I hope to get a YouTube link into this thread for a video of IKYR......
Richard I see, well done I am looking forward to more first line reports, folks should start floating in soon
Look for Portland to get Dew #3
And for those who have been trying to hold up Tuesday to Wednesday (or, shudder the thought, said Tuesday was better),>>>>
tues was better than wed, i was at both...imo of course, so back off....
its about songs you want to hear.....never saw a after mid, or 2 djiin, and was craving for a days>let it grow>H>S>F...hadnet seen let it grow in over 10 years, jsut never caught it....
^^^^^^^^
I can understand all that though. I also wanted to hear some of those songs, in particular Hard To Handle and After Midnight. I also love Mason's and I am always excited to have them play that one too. Viola Leee too? Shakedown?
Come on, that setlist had the makings of something really great. It was the execution that made all the difference.
Don't just take my take (and you don't have to take this next one either - to each his own - as the saying goes), but I spoke at length with a band member right after Wednesday night's show. We had drinks at a local bar for a few hours and even he said there was no compariosn in what they brought out of the music on Wednesday vs. Tuesday. He went so far as to say Tuesday was probably one of the 3 weakest shows they had played.
I'm not saying you're not entitled to a different opinion, but I'll give you mine. Tuesday was a professional performance, but it lacked a lot of fire by comparison. Without nights like Wednesday I couldn't even utter a complaint about Tuesday, but when they blow out the tunes they way they did on Wednesday it makes you realize just how high these guys can fly now. They have almost no boundaries.
For an "experiment" (I call it that and wonder what went on between Phil and Bob leading up to trying to see if this would work with John), which could have had the makings of a real train-wreck, this is turning out as well as anyone could have dared hoped. I am more excited to go to shows now than at anytime in the last 15 years. Your turn to agree to disagree.
Ted, this show is streaming on 365 live. I got right in. Check it out. I thought the DS< Stella was nice. There is a link to this site further up in the blog.
I won't go into a long diatribe; I enjoyed both shows (The Sun and TM). Seeing Bob and Phil enjoying playing together makes it worth it for me. Having discussed the shows with a few people I realize now that there were always different views as to what made a """""epic""" show. For some folks it was a searing , romping rock and roll fest while others came for the heart wrenching ballads and still others love the intricate interplay of the jams.
Can you get it all? Sometimes you can. Most time not though. Even the Grateful Dead in their heyday could not deliver it all to everyone every night. There were some Grateful Dead shows that I left wondering if the magic was gone. I am not ashamed to admit that.
It might not always be perfect but I still get that feeling in my heart when the house lights go down and the players on the stage open their hearts and minds and first waves of sound drift out over the crowd.
Pure magic.
Bring an open mind and a open heart, It doesn’t matter if its Ratdog, Phil and Friends, The Other ones, BK3, The Dead or Furthur and that magic just might touch you one more time.
Aren’t they all in the Heart of Gold Band?
Please we need a good diatribe. It has been at least 10 minutes since the last good one. We need to keep things fresh here!
was phil playing his older bass and not the new lightsaber? if so, anyone know why?
Yes, he's been using the prior bass every night I've seen him.
now for some photos....in order taken...when you get to the two gals enjoying the party, you're at set break....DArk Star is the RED lighted backdrop....here they come and there is a bunch....
OK, cut the files sizes a little close and need to reduce...hold on...

Hey ccb, I think you are pretty right on. Even in the old days you might get the "dud" show. That's why we had to hit ten in a row!! But really, I'm sure that you have noticed that ever since Jerry died that all the incarnations have basically brought out EVERYTHING we always wanted with much more frequency. The Alligators. hard to Handle St. Stephen more Dews, Viola Lee etc etc. Jerry was sort of stingy with these tunes but there is no denying that some of '70 shows with 35 or more tunes brought it all. I think Phil/Bobby knew that to keep our attention really strong that they would have to pull out more stuff from the old cedar closet. Hey, I'm all for it!! I wrote a blog yesterday on the taj thread at @ 11am that I would like your take on. Check it out. RR
last night was a free for all ticket wise. casino security unprepared for all the little tricks. met JK on casino floor after the show and chatted for 5 mins. amazing how many people from the show were walking around and just walked right by us as we sat in front of a slot machine talking!
First show this tour, though I did listen to the whole show they did over Sirius.
Passenger started things off nicely. Got the crowd goin.
Next Time You See Me - did not overwhelm me, but a solid version. Liked the song shoice.
King Bee - thought it was Red rooster at 1st, and was pleasntly surpised it was Bee. Like this song, and they did it justice. Sweet version, really got into it.
Hell in a Bucket - got the crowd moving a bit more. Good version.
was thinking at this point, wow, 4 Bobs in a row, but it was good.
Crazy Fingers - finally get JK singing. this version didn't fo it for me, Fingers are hit or miss for me. it was OK.
Cumberland Blues!!!!! they killed it; awesome rollickin take.
Magnolia Mountain - this brought it down after Cumberland. Actually like this Ryan Adams song, but they dont do it well - at least this time they didnt.
Sugaree - brought up back up! another sweet tune; left me hungry for the 2nd set.
Overall a good first set; some real nuggest (Bee, Cumberland, Passenger) and a couple so-so
2nd set
Lost Sailor, into Saint. This combo is hit or miss for me usually. This pairing here was decent, but nothing great. But then...
China > Rider - great, luved it , superb! some awesome playing.
Things starting to get goin'
The wheel - nice selection, above avg version
Jam >
Dark star - some great interplay, nice jamming.
I wasnt expectin to get DS so was lovin it.
Stella Blue - a delight. beautifu playing
Unbroken Chain!!!! this version is what it is all about. They were on fire; pure bliss.....they could have gone on forever, i sure wish they did
Saturday Night - a rollicking version, def a better then usual one.
Great encore. was expecting a ballad, to get Gloria was delicious. I luv that song & they jammed it out hard.
To sum; a great show!!! this band kicks ass. Anyone that bashes JK i just dont get it. He is anincredible player. Chimenti is phenomenal too, he really brings it. Phil was there bringin' it as usual, doesnt he always? Bob was in there in nis niche in his unique style. They def are playin well together.
One thing - i couldnt hear the back-up singers a all, the 2 lovly ladies. Would have liked to, i think, LOL. They looked good swaying in unison & such anway, LOL. Anyone got pics of the ladies? just curious.
Im def seeing this band this summer, mail-order on the way. you should too.... ;-)
peace
OK, hopefully this shit works now...I think there are a few gems...
Starting off with Bob doing a little soft sandal....
Take two...
finally...

This was my first Furthur show and first time seeing Phil since "the Dead" at the Spectrum last year.
I went in with few expectations and was rewarded with tight, consistently energetic playing, a sound that seemed like a cross between '74 and '89 Dead, plus a couple surprising arrangements/segues that could've never happened in the Jerry era. This group was a lot more inspired than "the Dead" though nowhere near as adventurous as peak P&F.
The show was sold out and there was a surprising amount of raised fingers in the casino halls and on the gaming floor. I didn't see many tickets being exchanged and people seemed to be willing to pay above face. There was a bizarre mix of dreadheads, guidos and old ladies with poofy hair in the building.
The Taj Mahal arena itself was a completely characterless black room that looked as if would be more suited to housing commercial jetliners or a mega job fair than a rock concert. Capacity was 5000 though it looked as if it could hold twice that. The side stands were WAAAY off the the side of the wide floor and I doubt sightlines were good from there. But we had 11th row floor seats between Jeff and Phil and could see fine. The seats themselves were unattached armless padded chairs of the sort you might find in a restaurant. They were squeezed way too close together, affording zero leg, arm or dance room. The sound was pretty good, volume-wise though the balance of the instruments was off from time to time.
Joe Russo was spot-on throughout the show, playing agressively, though he seemed a tad too low in the mix. Jay Lane seemed superfluous, playing "percussion" and not a full kit. He added little cymbal accents and turned around a rainstick from time to time. He often got really into the music, jumping up and down in time with the music. But I couldn't really hear what he was doing in the PA. There was never the two-kit fire of Mickey/Billy in their prime.
The two back up singers didn't really do much except fill out the sustain of choruses
where maybe old men Weir and Lesh are unable to give it adequate air anymore. But they never got in the way, on stage and in the PA mix they were always half-hidden off in the back.
Passenger was a good showopener, energetic with nothing too distinct about it. The momentum was then killed for me by back to back Weir-led bluesy tunes. Next Time You See Me featured a pretty grating slide solo by Weir, and then King Bee had a pretty good slide solo by JK. Neither in the Dead-era nor now am I psyched about Bobby doing songs originally associated with Pigpen.
Hell in a Bucket brought things back up, and while Weir has been honing more of a Lou Reedish "talk-singing" style these days, he still did the rock star falsetto ending.
Crazy Fingers was enjoyable but nothing special. JK's voice here and elsewhere had a grating whiny edge to it that reminded me of the worst aspects of Dinosaur Jr's J Mascis. Bobby's angular "rhythm" guitar was way too loud here as well as elsewhere later in the show. He was playing some interesting figures but he should never be louder than the lead guitar. Towards the end of the tune everyone in the crowd was swaying pleasantly amidst the shimmery post "but I try" meandering when all of a sudden Weir (I think) starts into the hoedown rhythm of "Cumberland." It was a "WTF?" moment for me but it worked perfectly. Everyone in the band caught on (I dunno if this was on the pre-made setlist or not) making the segue seamless. "Cumberland" is one of the tunes that seems to sound even BETTER in the post GD performances than with Jerry. Every time I've heard a Phil-band play it, it's a setlist highlight. This one included. It was ragged and raging in all the right ways.
Ryan Adam's "Magnolia Mountain" was next and with JK singing it really sounded like an outtake from "Wake of the Flood." Very GD-like in an enjoyable way.
Weir spoke-sung "Sugaree" to close the set, but he spoke-sung with PASSION and there was a moment during the beginning of the big instrumental wind-up where the band seemed PERFECT, all the instruments were at the right volumes and everyone was locked in. Near the end JK did some pure-Jerry guitar fanning that easily got him the biggest cheer of the evening.
Set 2 opened with my personal highlight of the evening, a well-played Sailor>Saint.
Very GD-like and probably pretty "standard" but I'd never heard this combo live previously and I've really gotten into it in the past year. "Lost Sailor" seemed to compliment the atmosphere of the gritty desolate half-closed AC boardwalk with a full moon above the ocean waves. I danced my hardest during "St of Circumstance."
We then gotta another two-fer with a good China>Rider that seemed straight-up 1972 . I noticed Phil doing his first bit of "conducting" as he gestured to get the transition between the songs to his liking. Phil seemed to stay in the driver's seat for most of the rest of the set, making gestures to band members and using the monitor/mike system.
"Wheel" was well-played with beams of white light shooting off into the crowd during "...then the lightning will."
The short jam after it had a tropical/reggae-ish feel. I almost thought they were heading into UJB but we got a good "Dark Star" instead with the stage bathed in blue, and red rose-like lights on the screen. JK blew half a line but it was no biggie.
The middle jam was driving and not really spacey at all. At first I thought I heard Other One coming and then Dancin in the Streets, but surprising to me they kept the syncopated danceable energy and feel and plowed into the 2nd verse of Dark Star. Like the Crazy Finger>Cumberland segue in set 1, it was a total "WTF?" moment that worked beautifully.
This came down gently into a sweet "Stella Blue." JK's mike was up way too loud in the mix, but he sounded very good otherwise.
"Unbroken Chain" was very welcome with Jeff Chimenti really shining during the tense middle jam. Throughout it was good to hear him loud and clear in the mix. Unlike with Molitz in P&F you could always hear what Jeff was playing, regardless of what keyboard he was using at the moment.
On a side note, Jeff seemed to down about 10 beers over the course of the set, with an attendant continually bringing him more brown bottles.
"Saturday Night" to close the set was what you'd expect, all energy fist-in-the-air fun, but nothing remarkable.
The "Gloria" encore hit me totally unexpectedly and had a great party atmosphore. Everyone on stage and in the crowd seemed to being having a great time during it. JK did great soloing, though I couldn't understand a word of Bobby's spoken improv bits between the repeated exclamation of those 6 letters.
I left the show happy and satisfied. My mind wasn't blown but I was certainly surprised and entertained.
JK blew half a line but it was no biggie.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
This is what i saw. He didn't blow it in that he didn't know the line, but he didn't realize it was his line to take. Weir looked over to him to make sure John knew it was his turn and it seemed as if John was transfixed and didn't see Bobby's facial gesture/head nod over in his direction.
nowhere near as adventurous as peak P&
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Well, we will just have to disagree on this one point, at least. The adventurousness you feel P&F had may simply be the various guitarists' lack of deep understanding/familiarity of the music, at least not to the same degree John has of it. To me, this is by far and away the most satisfying conglomeration of any post-Jerry attempt at playing the music with respect and inventiveness, as well as - most importantly - freshness and excitement.
I heard Other One coming and then Dancin in the Streets
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
No question it was Dancing. I said something about this to Bobby backstage after the show and he just sort of nodded and smiled. I didn't want to press the point, as I'd never met him before one on one and I was there to see someone else, so that is where I left it, other than to say it was the most interesting and unconventional Dark Star I had ever heard in 40 years. That is a mouthful. I can't wait to listen to it again.
Zone Deaf-- I would've LOVED the mindfuck of a Dark Star->Dancin'! maybe they'll try that later in the year
Your observations about JK during the Dark Star verse are spot on. That's exactly how I saw it happen too
And yeah what I perceive as "adventurous" is subjective. the rewards of Furthur vs. P&F are different and I will say that from what I've heard Furthur is more consistently focused than P&F and P&F can belly flop from time to time during transitions. but often I like the places that fuzzy lack of focus (and maybe lack of guitarists' "understanding") can lead
Thank you for sharing all the great photos.
Really enjoyed this show. Of the three I saw on this leg, AC was the most enjoyable, music-wise. Plenty of highs and very very few, if any, lows.
Listening to the stream now. The break/transition from UBC into OMSN is SWEET!!
Silence is music, too! Listen in the spaces between the music....
Great reviews and those photos are cherry. Glad you guys sent the band off in style, combining these last four shows we got it all.
Viva Furthur!
Glad you dig the photos. I was pretty pleased with many of them. You should check the YT video too of IKYR. I think you'll dig that too (apart from the jittery camera, at times - hard to dance and shoot at the same time).
Just watched the vid, it was sweet. I would highly recommend listening to both versions of IKYR from Barton, maybe the best, and Utica which smokes the AC one in IMHO
Sebastian: Don't quote me on this cause I haven't listened to the sbd yet, but I think some of Bobby's rap during Gloria went " I see something I like, and I'm willin to pay, I've got a little cash, so let's do it...and her name was G-L-O-R-I-I-I-I-I-I-A!" What a hoot!
Surprisingly great show last night! May I’ll write a review tomorrow.
…but for now, I’d like to know if anyone has noticed / mentioned the fact that last night Phil was back to playing his old bass (Modulus 6-string). A couple of weeks back at Stabler, Phil was still with the Light Saber (Ritter Jupitor).
Great move, Phil! IMO his change back to the Modulus helped make the second set at the Taj my favorite Futhur set to date.
Anyone know if last night was the first night he ditched the Ritter?
UncAl
He was using the Modulus last week at RCMH too.

Sounds like what I heard too....
...but I will know for sure when I finish listening to the discs tomorrow...
Nice reviews and photos too!
Way to go here. . .
Looking forward to Portland.
Does JK have back problems or have a metal rode in his spine? He has a strange posture.
wow
Some nice shots of the great Joe Russo.
Personally, I like the Dark Star photos, as I liked what they did with the lights to create the dark red star effect on the screen behind the band. That very nicely set the background mood. This one song has infinite possibilities, as was showed on this tour; the song continuously can be and is being reivented.
^yes! Zone Deaf I agree. i loved the lighting for DS too

I am wondering about this move as well. Personally, I think I like his Modulus bass sound better than the Jupitor bass, although the Jupitor looks badass. I think the bombs and sound is just much nicer, bigger and fuller on the Modulus. Anyone have any other comments on this switch?
Phil has been on big time this tour whatever the hell he is playing!
"The adventurousness you feel P&F had may simply be the various guitarists' lack of deep understanding/familiarity of the music, at least not to the same degree John has of it."
Polite disagreement with this take. I haven't seen or heard this band take the lengthy exploratory jams that P&F (and especially The Q) would do on a regular basis, at times opening a show with a 10-15 minute jam before even touching a song. Many sets seemed like the songs were simply islands in the middle of a sea of jams, approaching the late 60's sensibility more then anything that I've heard since. I have to say that I never took this as a sign that there was a "lack of deep understanding/familiarity of the music", but rather a desire to stretch the jams as far as possible in the context of the moment, usually successfully. I can understand why Phil might not want to go there as much anymore, and Bobby hasn't wanted to go there for many years (he isn't called the jam killer for nothing), but the one thing that I miss with this band from the older Phil lineups is the deliberate stretching of the material, especially in the first sets where basic songs are predominating for the most part. It's a pity because this band has a better overall tonal quality then the Q (no one could complain about the Southern Rock edge with these guys) and could take this lineup to '73 or '74 spaces if they so choose, but they're not extending the improvisation out as much (which was actually to be expected, but speaking for myself not desired).
This sounds like stuff I expect to to find in Music Talk, but I have a couple of things to say about what is lacking.
First, I agree that Phil is just plain on fire this tour. Best I've ever seen, dating back to 1978. he is able to sit back a bit and jam as JK, JC and BW more or less know the material. He has ben playing an awful lot of lead on that bass and THAT bass. This plays in to my next comment.
Now, back to the issue of the lead guitar player in all things GD. There is no doubt in my mind that an ESSENTIAL part of the GD sound and feel was the strong instrumental contributions of each Jerry, Phil and Bob as Pigpen faded from the band. Bob played a interesting sweet rhythm guitar and Phil brought an interesting style of bass playing, very melodic perhaps in part because of his background in trumpet. He grew musically from simple bass lines to all out jamming leads.
Jerry brought something unique and wonderful, we all know. A love of all types of music and experience playing many styles. He took all this with him in his playing. Many interesting melodies and arpeggios and tone intervals.
Jerry would often let the music flow and what would come out were strange/'wrong' notes that led to creation and exploration of new melodies and rhythms. This challenged and stimulated creativity in the playing of everyone in the band.
What I see 'missing' now is that challenge and leadership from the lead guitar. JK is wonderful, but he is not sending the band in any new direction. I thought that Warren does this a little better, but he is not enough of a risk taker. On and on with each of the guitarists in the various PhilBob bands. I would say that Karan is good, and I love Barry Sless. But guys like Trey, Warren, Jimmy though all great do not tend to take MELODIC chances while improvising. It is all very good, but predicatble. Jerry was NOT predictable. He was always, even in those heavy times post 1980ish, keeping the band off balance musically(and medically).
Thus, I see Phil as trying to fill that role more than ever, playing a lot of leads, even switching up basses. Perhaps to get something fresh and new to happen.
Don't get me wrong, I love this band and I wish I were going to a show every night. Just one of my takes on what is 'missing'.
and for that matter, Joe Russo is definitely 'dumming it down', and that is a shame. His strength is strongly percussive improvised music. That would be a huge addition to this band's sound and spontaneity. C'mon Joe and Phil and?Jill(jk) LET JOE PLAY!
Set 1:
Passenger
Next Time You See Me
King Bee I was thinking the show was going to be a clunker through this one. I didn't feel much energy. Nothing particularly adventurous in terms of song selection or jams or linkages between songs.
Hell in a Bucket decent version.
Crazy Fingers > Yipee. One of my faves. Thought it transitioned into Cumberland a little prematurely without a well developed guitar solo. Not sure. But I'l take a premature transition into a hot Cumberland over no Cumberland every time.
Cumberland Blues
Magnolia Mountain I like it a lot but there's no need for 16 on a tour. If Phil is enchanted by the Ryan Adams song book there's so much more there to choose from. In particular, where's my Let It Ride?!?!?
Sugaree was fine. Not a "set closer" in my book though. Not that I'm against closing with a Broken Arrow or opening with a Tennessee Jed or anything else. I like the song placements to be unpredictable, etc, but Sugaree is not Promised Land if that is what they want to use it for.
Set 2:
Lost Sailor >
Saint of Circumstance
China Cat Sunflower >
I know You Rider >
Wheel > I thought the start of the set was pretty strong
Jam > What's it gonna be? New Speedway??? Nope...
Dark Star > The AC police should have arrested them for stealing that Dancin' In The Streets from me! Putting on my psychic, mind-reading hat, I think it's doubly bad that the reason they didn't do it is that it wasn't on the set list and "they're stickin' to the setlists for the new guys." It was right there. All they had to do was start singing it. Of course, just theory and conjecture on my part. Still...we was robbed.
Stella Blue purty. hello old friend.
Unbroken Chain... Always nice. If you're going to have a fair amount of repeats during the tour this is a good one to do. I would have been disappointed if I didn't get it at one of my 4 shows between RCMH & AC.
One More Saturday Night
Encore: Donor Rap
Gloria Good rockers to close out the Sat Nite.
listening now...liked King Bee with nice slide guitar by jk. also, nice jam between CC and IKYR with again nice improvisation by jk
Just goes to show I am never too old to learn the same lesson over and over again. Sometimes I forget how many times in the past after a subpar Grateful Dead or Phil and Friends show, I had decided that it was it was no longer for me. Each time I told myself the same story...that the band had lost it and/or I had outgrown the music. Each time I decided to get off the bus, something would pull me back to a show and invariably that show would bring enough magic to put me back on the bus. The Taj show was another one of those “get-your-butt-back-on-the-bus” moments.
Having attended a pretty good Hammerstein show in December and a lack luster Stabler showing a couple of weeks back, a bunch of us were down on this band. It seemed like the evil Shatnerlike forces of Bobby had taken the band over and I told myself there was no way I could bear hearing Bobby suck the life out of another Jerry song (like the half dead Black Peter or the slow Jimmy Row we suffered at Stabler).
But Sunday was LG’s 54th birthday and despite our lack of excitement for this band, we decided since we had already purchased tickets, we would take the opportunity to enjoy a guys’ B-day celebration weekend down the shore. We even considered selling our Furthur tix and buying into the Harrah’s Levon Helm show, but based on past Deadhead experiences, we decided to give this band one more chance
With subzero expectations LG, Ed, Berky and myself showed up for the show and as it turned out, we were quite glad we did. Although we heard 5 repeats from Stabler, the shows could not have been more different.
Here’s why IMO:
The band seemed more alive
The pace of the music was faster and sharper
Phil was playing his old Modulus – more power, better tone and bigger bombs
The drummers were peppier. Russo was sharper and faster and instead of Jay Lane using all his energy to jump up and down, he apparently listened to Phil and kept up with him and Joe.
The sound quality and mix were far better.
Better setlist – better placed songs.
Bobby sung the Bobby (and Pig) tunes and with the exception of Sugaree, John was allowed to sing the Jerry tunes. Not only did it sound better when John sung Jerry songs, those songs were paced better when not Shatnerized by Bobby. Sugaree started off dragging, but JK’s guitar shredded the build-up and crescendo and left us smiling at the break.
Highlights of the first set were a driving Bucket, a beautifully performed Crazy Fingers and a kickass Cumberland.
The second set flowed like honey
Can’t say enough good things about the second set. The band clicked on all cylinders from start to finish including a tremendous Sailor/ Saint (as good as any GD versions I’ve heard), a China better then any Phil and Friends version I’ve heard (and I’ve heard 100’s), a Rider more energetic than I thought possible from this Furthur band (almost as good as some of the more killer P&F versions), the best Stella I’ve heard post GD (In this song, John showed me he truly belonged until he surpassed that with an even better played Unbroken Chain that compared with some of the countless top P&F versions I’ve heard (which is very high praise coming from me). The Wheel built up well and wound into a nice jam that took us into a very tightly jammed Dark Star (which totally overturned my perception that this band had no ability to be original and surprising). Saturday Night and Gloria were energetic and fun and placed perfectly at the end.
Before the show, I really had no idea why I was sitting at another Furthur show. I had noticed a lot of Ratdog shirt wearers in the crowd and thought these people were most certainly at the right place.
But when it was all over, I knew we were ALL exactly where we belonged.
Happy Birthday LG.!
Looks like we’re buying summer tickets!
Was hanging around the SB before the show and one of the guys dropped the setlist right in front of me, knew I shouldn't have looked, but did and saw the whole first set, kinda ruined the vibe....like knowing what is in the box before opening a present...made sure to stay away from the board for the 2nd set and had a great time!
2nd verse of Dark Star has a very interesting theme going on - a melding of Dancin, On Broadway, another early '70's pre-disco Motown song called Killer Joe I think, and, strangely enough and maybe just in my imagination, but Stop-Go (Widespread Panic), which itself has many of the same tunes jammed in it (and Fire on the Mountain).
This was truly the WORST VENUE EVER!!!!!!! Good god I hope to never have to step inside a Trump establishment ever again. The vibe of that entire casino was so bad I actually got sick to my stomach twice during the show and had to leave, wandering the casino in search of an uncrowded bathroom to shart in (fortunately there was plenty of Bobby filler for that). When we walked post-show thru the ped bridge connecting to the Showboat I swear it was like some heavy black veil was lifted, like when the Wicked Witch is killed in Wizard of Oz. Totally different overall freindlier vibe there.
I find that whole city is 'Eraserhead' !
Except White House Sub Shop, of course.
i liked the show alot....i went to 6 wednesday rcmh #1 asheville#2 ac#3 rcmh tuesday#4 then charlotte and hampton....but do agree all the people who work at the taj were just complete assholes every step of the way..im glad they are going bankrupt...the only funny part was when i was playng craps afer the show the whole casino floor smelled like pot
Richard,
I believe we all sometimes over think the action and reaction of the heart of gold band and its members. When Jerry Garcia passed by I am sure I felt the same pain remorse and resentment that early fans felt when Rom Mckerman's final curtain fell. The Music never stopped. Though I am most fond of the years that I witnessed, Years that Garcia sometimes overshadowed other members of the band. I now find myself listenig to these new shows as well as some of the classic runs with an ear towards Phils Lesh's Bass and Bob Weir,s guitar. Enjoying some of the interplay that I missed while focusing on Jerry's playing. Great stuff in there. I remember going to a show in the early eighties that my friends and I dubbed the cowboy show or maybe it was a run of shows I forget now. Me and my uncle, el paso, cumberland blues, mexicalli blues, mama tried at the time we were disapointed we all wanted a heavy dose of Jerry.
Whats weird is I find myself enjoying those tunes even anticipating them.... Oh well I am rambling even overthinking it again!
The music never stopped
CCB - Word!
Some of my friends have called me on my “rave” review above. Now that the glow of the show has worn and sanity has set in, I must admit that some of my comments were a bit overzealous.
This band is what it is and certainly lacking some of the more exploratory creative elements discussed in SunRa and Tom’s post (probably due to Bobby’s influence and the lack of 2 guitar gods flanking Phil). And undoubtedly Further lacks the power brought forth from the absence of the best drummer on the planet, John Molo. With that said, Sat night showed me this band has the ability to deliver a solid show and the potential to take the music into new and interesting directions. We shall see.
