Q: Why did I drive 3 hours to see the show here?
A: Aside from the obvious, the chance to sit in the venue, connect wirelessly, do work, and listen to the soundcheck, all while on a conference call too!

Jack Hoban: The Boz Scaggs recording was a cover. Fenton Robinson did Somebody Loan Me a Dime. Too many white guys take credit for blues songs from Black musicians. We should not do the same thing.

Somebody Loan Me a Dime..... Good Golly Miss Molly!
great show.
nice to finally teresa with the band, she was on stage quite a bit tonight.
good times had by all.
Minglewood, Minglewood.
Minglewood MINGLEWOOD M-i-n-g-l-e-w-o-o-d.
Think of this as the "John Malcovich" of Minglewoods.
Minglewood Minglewood Minglewood.
I'll tell whoever wants to listen...
When people sit down and objectively rank the shows from this tour, you're gonna see this one in a lot of top five lists...
Did NOT see that comin'! I'll take it though, gladly!
I sure did enjoy it...
Charlottesville '08 was in the top 5 of PnF shows I've seen yet.
The second set alone was for the ages, and that Minglewood was in another dimension entirely!!!!! Larry and Jackie won their Jedi spurs for sure.
Oh yeah, that Minglewood was really, REALLY strong.
I liked the setlist, it pulled a bunch of tunes from the sortawaybackmachine.
And ya gotta love getting faked out by I Know You Rider teases three times in one show...
Anyone know who sang China Doll?
>>>
Teresa, every word..
Jackie just keeps getting better and Larry once again stepped up AGAIN big time..
Delias right, that Minglewood was wild good.
The Tennesse Jed was really nice too.
I know, i wanted the Rider bad.
I disagree with the Innsbrook comparison, i thought the Charlottesville crowd was more real Phil freaks, but not really any less talkative. It dident bother me at all.
I thought both shows were great with Charlottesville getting the edge because of the Teresa factor, A + + + + + !
I was hoping she would show up, very good vocals and good stage vibe about her, i like what she brings.I also liked how they set her up next to Larry, they both looked like they were having a blast...
Sweet venue too.Well worth the 2 hour ride for me.
Phil was looking his usual good self, sounding good.
Jackie kicks ass, it was blues night and he did it really really well, i was impressed, the Kids good.
This lineup keeps getting better, if you have a chance go see them.
I loved the audible gasps in the crowd when Phil lit up the bass. LOL
Maybe I had low expectations from the last CVille show on 10/13/07, but I was taken above and beyond what I thought I'd get.
I don't mind being wrong when that's what I'm wrong about!

looks great
agree w recs to 'to see this band'
I have seen 5 of these shows, and I am headed to Rochester this Sat. A 5-6 hour drive, and well worth it. looking forward to seeing and hearing Phil's new bass!!!!!
OK, I'll give a different point-of-view. I thought it was a pretty boring show. I see this band for the jams, and those were completely MIA last night, which belied the jammy Alligator start. After that, it was start, stop, start, stop the whole night. I'd rank it way below Richmond, and NH, which were the other 2 shows I saw on this tour.
I can see cheaper cover bands if I want. I could go a couple of lifetimes without ever seeing anyone cover Minglewood or Tennessee, and be happier because of it.
I thought the highlights were Alligator > BIODTL, Loan a Dime (smokin') , Truckin, and Good Lovin'.
I'm glad everyone else liked the show so much. Gimmme the jams, please
Going into this band looking for the jams is like listening to Primal Dead waiting for those rich vocal blends...
There were the few stops in the second set but Passenger > Half Step > Tell Me Mama, and China Doll > Midnight Rider > Death Don't doesn't seem like start, stop, start, stop the whole night.
But, I could be wrong.
Sorry you didn't dig it...but this band has been together for a calendar year, at what point did they give us a hint they would be dropping huge jams on us each night?
And for the record, I'm with ya in terms of wanting a more jammy, perhaps even NOODLY approach, but I take what I can get, and know what I'm getting going in.
I don't remember any notable transitions in the entire second set. Yeah, they did go nicely into Half Step, but that was about it. But, I could be wrong, too. Certainly no *interesting* transitions, to my ears.
Well, whether or not the transition was interesting or notable, that's up for debate in a whole other viewpoint. But to say that they came to a full stop after every song after Alligator, is, well, incorrect.
I'm not here to tell ya that the transition from Midnight Rider to Death Don't Have No Mercy rivaled the Dark Star > Sugar Magnolia segue from 4/8/72...
but they didn't exactly step back, fist bump, sip from a solo cup, and towel off after Rider, either....
True, but it'd been nice if they did something other than a dirge in that slot.
For me, the show never took off... and I think that might be the first time I can say that in the 40 or 50 Phil shows I've seen.
Pretty amazing consistency for a band, really. I guess I can't love every show!
Certainly not....and yes that's fantastic consistency! I can count on one hand (less, really) the number of Phil shows that I walked away from actually disappointed.
Pretty nice gig for us, eh?
Bzl, i respect your opinion and all but it seems strange that you come on this thread and slam this show and say you saw two other shows you rated way above Charlottesville, i kinda think its bullshit really that you wrote no review of those shows.
You are wrong. I posted a review about NH (it's there), a show which I liked a lot more that some of the previous posters.
I didn't post about Richmond, which everyone loved (rightly so, imo). I guess I don't see a need to post simply to agree with everyone.
I think if you look back to previous tours, you will see that I often post positive reviews. This might be the first negative review I've given a Phil show, ever, in here. If you don't like that, oh well...
Not everyone loved Richmond, half the people were complaining about the crowd.
You are wrong.
>>
Only half wrong.
I missed the NH post, my bad.
I don't care how you review shows, i was just making an observation.I do think if you come on here and call a show boring and you went to a different show and thought it was great, then its only fair that you should have posted that after that show, whatever.Thats all i'm trying to say, its not a big deal.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
like Foghorn Leghorn?!
I think that it shouldn't be too hard to have a good time at ANY Phil show. Or any live music, for that matter. If you can't get high on the whole live music scene(barring, of course, something or some people who make it miserable) then that is a shame.
IMHO a critique of the performance is best done after listening to the show from a second vantage point. i.e. either moving to where the sound is better or listening to a recording of the show. So many times I have left a show feeling that it was lame and was surprised by what I heard on the recordings. That includes a lot of the Grateful Dead shows I attended over nearly 20 years.
I loved the all 5 of the shows I saw, VA through NH, and I am going to let it flow again at the Rochester show.
This IS Phil and Friends, for whatever that is worth! And I am drawn to it.
Not half the people, no...
it was mostly me! But I complained loud and long enough for it to seem like more :-)
And I liked the show, make no mistake. It was the crowd that pissed me off, not the band.
some video of the encore, shot by my girlfriend
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3sMYnkI4-8
I'm sorry some experienced a bad show at Richmond because of the crowd. That is why we paid $35 for Gold Circle seats. 3rd row for $35 is well worth it IMO.
Here are some pics from last night too

Sorry most didn't come out that great. I'm 5ft tall and was battling bobbing heads and bodies that belong to 6 foot tall giants.
Yes Sunra,Leghorn... Thats pretty much my view also on the whole Phil thing. If you start getting too judgmental it starts making things unenjoyable
Great show in an intimate venue! 5*'s. The only 'lowlight' was Phil's mic in the early stages but Alligator/BIODTL/a non-encore weight,Brown I'd Wmn/PASSENGER!/M-wood/Casey & Truckin in the same show finishing with Good Lovin. How could you not like that. Teresa is fantastic! I was never a China Doll fan until I saw Jerry play it and now hearing Teresa singing it the way she did..Oh yeah! The whole band is smokin'. Very tight. Saw the Dead over 20 years and this was my first P&F show but won't be the last! I left dripping wet from dancing....haven't had such a good time in a while! THANKS DANNY!
>>> Yes Sunra,Leghorn... Thats pretty much my view also on the whole Phil thing. If you start getting too judgmental it starts making things unenjoyable<<<<<<
This is also very true for attending Dead shows in general and after, say, 1981 in particular. Though the crowd/fans at the Dead shows post 1981 got more and more annoying. EXCEPT all of you on the Philzone,
Minglewood---clearly excellent.
But the "Death Don't Have No Mercy" was killer, as were "China Doll" "Passenger" and "Truckin'"
The technical problems really did bog down the first set, and, boy, was it hot under that tent. In the mid 90s....
Overall, fun, but pacing and song selection kept it from being supremo.
I dont post much here, but here are some pix from the C-Ville show!!!
