Hey,
Lets all vote for our favorite PLQ show of 2001 here. Myself or some other phreak will tally the results. Hey, even you too can do the math.
I will put my subjective but educated vote in for Hartford Meadows.
Listening to it now...
The show was almost flawless and boundless at the same time.
2/18 Maritime is awesome, I don't know if it's the best but it's definitely great
I cannot believe I am going to say this, but I think it is 12.30.01. The other very close second may be 11.30.01 or 11.24.01. 12.30.01 may be one of the finest nights ever, not just this year. Someone please get me the discs.....I know it hasn't even been a week, BUT, how can we pick a greatest night if the shows aren't even in circulation yet......I beg, blatantly. For the record, Hartford, PNC, Jones Beach, Asbury and even Roseland run a tie. Do we really have to pick one? So unfair in a year with stellar stellar music.
wow.. of the 23 shows i saw in 2001, its hard to pick just 1. Dewits picks are good enough for me (although i missed Hartford and Boston). i will also add into those, Hershey, Merriweather, Charlotte in the summer, Burlington in the fall, even Washington, DC in the spring..
Hey Dewit, the discs are on the way....
taperrob
11/30/01 Beacon. Honorable Mention: 2/13, 2/18, 4/20, 4/24, 4/29, 7/6, 7/27, 7/28, 11/12, 12/31
7/14 Alpine Valley, 2/18 Maritime
No one defined the rules so while there are none I will shoot the moon. (these are all IMHO and are selected from the shows I attended only)
Best jawdropper= goodtimes badtimes roseland
most emotional=12/03 beacon
Most eyeopening= 2nd Franklins at the beacon (don't ask)
show that the "oh I see" factor took the longest to hit= camden
best lights= Asbury
coolest venue= sunrise (camping and crowd)
Most spirtual personal= Charlotte
Most spiritual group=12/30 and 31
The ones I walked out of totally blown away=asbury, hartford, charlotte, beacon 11-30. new years both.
best sound=this is really hard but ...hershey becuase it was outside with no roof or wall or anything.
best dancing=raliegh
best worst moment that turned to gold=when Dewit stepped on my toe arriving late to the seats further down my row and I introduced myself.
best show I didn't go to: everyone I "heard" in the Live Chat room.
Best 3day run=mansfeild/hartford/spac (dont ask)
so hard to do this becuase it is all so irrelevent to how I look at the event now.

***Hands Down Most Favorite and Greatest show 11/30 Beacon Theater NY. D A R K S T A R!****
most interesting for me to listen to were
4/27/01 esp set 2
7/20/01 esp set 2
in critically listening to multiple versions of shows looking for the best tapes i found myself getting lost in the flow of these nights.
the actual songs don't really matter once you're in the zone
Here are the one's I was at that I think were best
Red Rocks 7/6,the bird song and unbroken chain
Red Rocks 7/7 the whole show,I love this venue, plus it's in my home town.Very spiritual.
Nye,was about the emotional experience, and No more do I,love this song.Seeing the boys together on stage again was overwelling,i'm still floating.
Charlotte,was fun but did'nt hit as hard as red rocks.On cd I really like 7/10 riverport,hartford also.There's soooo many that I love,I pick them all,well I know I can't do that,but 2001 was a great year for us deadheads!!!!!
Chuckle, laugh, how weird. Woke up this morning thinking, damn, Hershey should be on my list, because, yes, best sound, superior vibe and some kick ass music, with, while not the best, one of the most spiritual Unbroken Chains.....Folks, we had 80 shows this year, and some of us were silly enough to go for the full bus tour, how can you pick just ten?
Best jaw-dropper, without question LessThan, Good Times, Bad Times
Best full circle show, Jones Beach. Patchwork Quilt, Good Times Bad Times, Built to Last. Thank you Jerry, Woody and Brent...there is more cryptically (definetely no pun intended) to this show than meets the eye.
4.15.01~orlando~not only because it was my 1st P&F show but also for the sunshine of your love>keep on growin'
12.30.01~amazing
12.31.01~seeing,feeling and being a part of the healing that went on that night.
**thanks to all the zoners that made my NYE trip just that>a trip
Is this a trick thread ?
Wake up Carlin!!! I believe we are deadly serious. And Zen, you are one very cool dude.
I totally agree with Zen as my favorite show I attended in 2001 was 4-15-01 and 12-30 and 12/31 were just too sick to count and honorable mention goes to Maritime hall and to Greek (especially Phil day)
Okay,
So this isn't the most scientific poll ever created. You guys are right. 2001 was amazing and full of such excellent moments. It is too hard to really pin it down to one show. Especially when there were so many good ones to chose from. What a really amazing year for music.
Thank you Phil
Proceed.....
dunno if 4-15-01 is atlanta or not but that gets my honorable mention with scorching versions of shakedown, she said and like a rolling stone. 2nd place goes to 12-30 -a devestating display of musicianship and the natural precursor to the best show of the year: NYE. undoubtedly the band is flexing it's newly grown muscles. during this show i turned to my buddy and said it's as if they had gotten better since last week! (meaning the xmas jam that we had both attended) and without missing a beat he said to me "Since LAST NIGHT!!". and that pretty much says it all about the power of this band. NYE was my fav but the bigger picture of what's going on and what's yet to come is what I'm excited about. ON TOUR has never sounded so good.
Tour? Did someone mention tour?
Need riders for Summer 2002. Uhhh maybe I am jumping the gun.
From the shows I saw this year, my vote goes to 7/6 Red Rocks. That was a monster performance and a hell of a good time.
I did see both nights of that run, but 7/6 was waaaay better in my opinion.
2001 shows I attended:
4/16 Birmingham
7/6 & 7/7 Red Rocks
7/9 Oklahoma City
12/21 Christmas Jam in Asheville
If I were a richer man...
I don't have any tapes except for shows I went to, so I'm just going to rank my own experiences.
1. 12/31-Simply amazing, healing, helped me with my spiritual evolution/progression. Front row for ratdog and some of the best seats in the house throughout. Wish I had seen some Philzoners though...
2. 07/06-My second show and it was magical. First time at red rocks and the natural beauty got me. Les Claypool was a fun opener.
3. 04/20-Charotte. My 1st PLQ show. Took me to a place that I had never thought possible. I remember crying when Jerry died because I had never made it to a show-this-along with NYE changed everything.
4. 12/30 I can't wait to hear the Second Set. That and Bobbie's rendition of Eyes. mmm, Shakedown.
5. 07/07 Red Rocks I never thought a show so wonderful could place 5th on my list-until the Crusader Rabbit incident. Help/Slipknot!/Eleven/Slipknot!/Franklins/Dark Star=unbeatable
6. 08/03 Raleigh. I was late and didn't get into this one. but I still remembr getting down to a sick Franklin's with ABB and some other treats.
7. 08/04 Charlotte. Personal reasons prevented the music from lifting me up...my only Phil disappointment...I think I was expecting too much after 4/20 and Red Rocks.
All in all, a wonderful year of self-exploration and good vibes that I think I might have to write a book about...
peace in the middle east
--->Best Phil Lesh related quote of 2001<---
"Phil Lesh and his band will continue to WARM UP for eternity!"
-Quoted by our dearest friend Robbie Gold in the lot during pre-game beers and cheers @ Hartford, CT. 7-21-01.
12-31 was the most interplanetary spiritually connected beautifully 4th dimensional going home tribal music ritual I've EVER experienced!! Capped off the year in true heartfelt spirit!! Hands down best of year!! It's getting better all the time!! The best is yet to come.........We love you Phil & Co!!!!!!!
HERSHEY PARK but for the life of me, couldnt tell ya the date. Great show for sooo many reasons.
Of those I've heard, I would have to say 4-20-01 was the best.
I'd also say 7-7 & 2-18 were close.
But, 5-27-00 is still king of the hill.
Of those I attended, Hartford 7-21 was the best.
Then Roseland 4-30.
Then 11-26.
Then 12-1, but that took 2 hours to reach full power.
Great picks, everyone. Don't forget the Greek 6/30/01.
7.29.01, Hershey. And the ONLY reason we were there was because Baligirl said she had this feeling it was going to be great back at GreatWoods. Go figure. So we go, and I meet LessThan and GraterThan, after leaving Tapecat in the lot...I owe you bigtime for that show!!!
For clarification, this is shows we went to, or shows we heard? Or does it not matter at all?
After sleeping on it last night, I've decided it's nearly impossible for me to choose.
But, if there was a gun to my head and they needed a date, I'd say 420.
my vote is for 7/29 as well
Well, best. What's that mean? Musical best, your best, most transcendent...I don't get it.
But the show that changed my world this year (and only saw a few) was 11/26.
Thank you Philco.
Warren, please don't leave. We need you. NEED.
Of the four shows I attended I would rank them like this:
#1 8/4/01 Charlotte amazing jams and cohesiveness from start to finish. my only complaint is that it was a short (one set) show (but then again we got to see the ABB too!!)Highlights are the Unbroken Chain, and the St. Stephen through Golden Road segment is perfect! (Terrapin Inspiration was a joyous danceable surprise!) and the Patchwork Quilt encore was the cherry on top.
#2 12/1/01 Beacon a little sleepy at times, but when it hit it hit BIG and it was well played throughout. the UJB through the last note of the bid you goodnight with Dickey was high energy pefection!
#3 8/3/01 Raleigh. Shakedown>Wheel>Scarlet>Rider
e) Doin' that Rag. looks good on paper, sounded even better dancing to it on the lawn. and we got Phil and the Allmans jamming together on Franklins!
#4 8/2/01 VA Beach. my 1st Phil show. a little heavy on the 60s rock covers ("Sunshine of Yr Love" "Watchtower") that are better left to other guitar gods. and it didn't really hit the emotional peaks of the next two nights.
Still fun as all heck though (and we got the ABB too) and these days it seems there ain't no such thing as a bad PLQ show!
besides, I don't have this one on tape so my impressions are just from foggy (yet drugfree) memories of 5 months past.
Also 11/26/01 Beacon sounds hot (Jimmy's amazing synth acoustic guitar) with amazing instrumental passages, but I only have part of it on CD and wasn't there.
and quite honestly, all of these shows were so much better than any Other Ones/ Ratdog/ or Furthur shows I saw in the past and they even hit close and maybe even surpass the one Dead show I saw 9/20/93 (for my 14th birthday, my 1st concert ever!) but that's a totally different band and why compare!? all this music is so great and beautiful and spirtual (GD, PLQ and even Ratdog and the O1s), even the somewhat sloppy GD cover band, Splintered Sunlight, that i see playing at a local bar is a spiritual experience. oh the joy and mystery of this music and never knowing what might come next. I'm revving up for the PLQ (with CRSB?) spring/summer tours!
i'll be the kid with the shaggy hair and sideburns dancing hard and drug-free on the lawn!
I have to say 2/18/01 maritime hall, was one of the greatest and he even said it himself! Now thanx to Waterhill (Wonka) I have it on cd!
My husband would say that 7/1/01 (phil day) at berkeley was the greatest this year! And that was our wedding weekend (the phil show was our pre honeymoon)
They all rocked!!
out of the shows i attended i would go with>.
12-31-01 hjk
7-29-01 hershey
4-24-01 washington
8-3-01 raleigh
7-31-01 merriweather
4-23-01 richmond
8-2-01 va beach
but when i think any further id say all the shows other than 12-31-01 are interchangable
no matter, its been a great year all the way around
pugs
#1. 2/18/01 the most perfect 2nd set of the year, imho, and that first set ain't no joke either
#2. 4/20/01- wasn't there but the cd's give the whole vibe
#3. 7/3/01 - perhaps the most underrated show of the year
Hands down Red Rocks 7/6 and 7/7/01. On 7/7, the music and the elements combined to make this one impressive show, although the thunder and lightning may make it hard for those of you not there to truly enjoy it. :-(
Runners up were the three bonus shows I got:PNC, Camden and Hotlanta
#1 show: 7/10/01 Riverport Amphitheatre. #2 show: 7/14/01 Alpine Valley. #3 show: 11/9/01 Fox Theatre, St. Louis, MO. #4 show: 11/10/01 Louisville Palace Theatre.
Of the 5 shows I saw this year I'd rank 'em like this:
#1: 4/29 - Asbury Park - First Phil show, blew my mind.
#2: 11-30 - Beacon; Get the tapes.
#3: 11-26 - Beacon; raw power.
#4: 7-27 - PNC; Somewhat of a tie between this and 11-26, they were both amazing.
#5: 7-28 - Camden; Saturn Jam -> Mr Fantasy was the highlight.
I feel incredibly lucky that I saw such great shows. Hope to hit atleast 20 shows in 2002.
of the 4 i saw
11/10 louisville
tie summer and spring hotlanta
12/21 ashville
what ive heard
4/20
also trumps the above 4
>>>Well, best. What's that mean? Musical best, your best, most transcendent...I don't get it.
To me, it's musical, Period.
I never went to socialize & if I do, it doesn't affect the musical performance.
Cinderoo:
i think the best part of 2-18-00 is the Dancin > Scarlet > Dancin.....
Bucky, I kinda assumed we were in the realm of musical best, yes. But for me...well, I get a little caught up in the emotion of the moment (like you couldn't tell ;) ) so, not having tapes of the fall, it would be hard for me to tell. For instance, when I go back and read your review of 12/2 written AFTER you listened to the tape, I cant believe that'sa show I attended. I respect yr review, I do, I just need to hear the show again.
So....right. If you can't hear all the tapes to compare, well, it might actually be more likely that you were AT more shows than you have tapes for (tapes, geez, I sound like a real relic, eh?), and then it becomes an issue of did you have a good TIME at that show....yes, it might have been rockin', but you got hassled by security or something and never got to find out. Then it might be appropriate to talk about which was the most FUN show...most mellow Plus good music, most powerful, best execution, most inventive set list, I mean, the superlatives could be endless.
So, I don't know. Yeah, Musical best...but w/o source material after the fact, very hard to judge on those merits. (imho.)
just the facts ma'm
Of the three shows I saw and Five shows I heard:
Best live show: 07-26-01
Best on tape/cd: 07-26-01 and 07-21-01
Best Herring show: 07-21-01 (peakin with the final crescendo of franklin's!!!)
Most underrated: 07-24-01
Best setbeginning jam: Jupiter Jam 07-26-01
Cute little Warren solo: 07-24-01 H2H between the verses
Great vocals: Just a little light (Warren, 07-26-01), Doin that rag (07-21-01 Rob)
Moment to listen to with your heart: 07-24-01 Comes a time
Best Phil Bomb(s): 07-26-01 Midnight hour
DewIt wrote about 07-26-01 Jones Beach: there is more cryptically (definetely no pun intended) to this show than meets the eye.
That must have been why I closed mine for most of the show while dancing.
>>>DewIt wrote about 07-26-01 Jones Beach: there is more cryptically (definetely no pun
intended) to this show than meets the eye.
But Stella was like a knife in the heart.
Shoulda been Dark Star.
I mean, they were THERE, & poof!, there goes the energy. As soon as they get to NFA, back to the peak.
Can't pick one show for the year...
But can pick a tour...Fall tour was one
of the fondest memories in my book.
But honorable mentions..
Asbury
SPAC where pretty nice....
But this fall tour reminded me so much to as to
why I liked going to see the Dead and now Phil...
People! I have met some serious cast of characters in the past and now in the present.
Never had so much as I did this fall..
So my vote all 3 beacon shows and the PA show
are my favorites 2001
Only saw three shows this year. im only 17 and did not get my car till about mid summer
Meadows- all about set #2 slip>11>slip>franklins was pure bliss. Bobby on casssidy was also amazing
Oakdale- Eh alright show, st.stephen>rev was the highlight. very well played scarlet > fire. ramble opener surprised me a bit.
Boston 11/24/01- MY SHOW OF THE YEAR..after a rickin smokestack>cumberland...we get FOTD and casey jones. then set 2...ALLIGATOR!!!!!!!!!!! i oculdent believe it, throw in bird song, golden road, and a nice 25 min viola lee and it makes for one hell of a show. being second row center was pretty cool too!
if only i coulda saw the dead
Mike
only saw four shows this year but the vote goes to 11/12/01 columbus, oh. about three rows back dead center. thought it was cool how they opened set 1 with "comes a time" and set 2 with "wharf rat." needless to say i was pretty moved and the feeling that overcame me during the intro to "dear mr. fantasy" was superb. cheers!
Best I was at: 11/16/01 Burlington
There was plenty of room to dance way up front. They played a mega early 70's sounding jammed out Playin' (I just love them playin' jams!) and King Solomon's (Never thought I'd witness that live). Also, I got to meet a pack of zoners post show!
Best I have on disc: I just love the Dark Star> Blues for Allah>Dark Star and the Help>Slip>Walrus>Franklin's from 4/20/01.
Best Show I wish I was at: Tie - 12/31/01 (I think you know why) and 11/23/01 Boston (That Second set looks too unbelievable! - hope I get the discs for this one soon!)
>>>if only i coulda saw the dead
Your parents aren't even old enough to have seen the Dead when they were as good as P&F.....
You didn't miss a thing (time to duck).
>Cinderoo:
i think the best part of 2-18-00 is the Dancin > Scarlet > Dancin.....
i hear ya buckster. everytime i go to grab the cd's, however, the thrill of hearing that incredible caution jam again, and again, and again always pulls me to putting in cd 3. whew! i sure wish it would become a more regular feature of the song list.
Being way over here & getting to watch you guys have soooo much fun
The dancing scarlet dancin trio is hot ... near the end of dancing part one, in the slowish section, one of the guitarists (Jimmy I think) plays this little run of notes that is perfect. Not fast, not long ... just perfect notes
hey hey, I made you guys a PART II
IMO this was an epic year for great Phil shows.
As far as the shows I’ve attended, my favorite was 11-17-01 Stabler Arena in Bethlehem, PA, which might be my all time favorite Phil and Friends show. The recordings that I’ve heard are great, but they just don’t do it justice. You had to on the floor, feeling it!
I’ll give a joyful honorable mention to some of the others I’ve attended: 4-27 and 4-28 at the e-factory in Philly, 8-3-01 in Raleigh, N (Franklin’s Tower with the ABB) and 7-31 Merriweather Post in Columbia, MD (awesome Terrapin and the summer’s best encore: I am the Walrus)
Best show of the year on CD: 4-20
Other phantastic shows I've heard on CD include: 7-1, 4-30, 2-18, 7-7, 7-26 and 7-27
Summer's best encore?
St Stephen at Red Rocks 7-7
>>>the thrill of hearing that incredible
caution jam again, and again, and again always pulls me to putting in cd 3.
I generally listen from beginning to end as I drive around for hours asome nights.
BTW, Ever heard the Caution Jam from 5-6-81, DP #13 I think. That one is awesome.
>St Stephen at Red Rocks 7-7
Yeah Bucky, you should have seen the looks on peoples' faces when they pulled that out on top of an already incredible, not to mentin soaking wet show!
>You had to on the floor, feeling it!
At the Stabler I wasn't on the floor actually 10 rows
up on rob's side...Still felt that Other One.
Phil's bass felt like a warm fuzzy punch in the chest, if thats possible.
Love to hear the SB of the 2nd set from that show.
second best is always better than the best
I surely had a great show when Bobby busted out
Shakedown, then Phil busted out Shakedown.
It was a battle of the bands moment.
whatever: who cares!!!!!!
Hartford Ct. 7-21-01
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Bethlehem, PA on 11.17.01. Help> Slip> Golden Road with a Franklin's encore. Awesome.
Of the 11 I saw this year, my top four (though the order keeps changing between 1 & 2)were:
1)Beacon 11/30 - For pure musical thrills and chills (the Tears of a Clown break-out, While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Warren's My Sweet Lord slide into Pt. 2 of Dark Star for GH, and the Star itself) this was the one.
2)NYE - Hard to say whether this surpassed 11/30 on musicality because IT was in the house so big time. The Bunny set was an ear to ear grin and the tears flowed during (I never woulda believed it) Celebration.
3) 7/26 - Jones Beach - My birthday show with Phil dropping those bombs at The Midnight Hour, the first set closing Scarlet/Fire and the fully realized Good Times Bad Times out of and into a roaring Stephen.
4) 4/30 - Roseland - This HAD to be a good one to make up for the Hell that we were put through by the venue staff. And it was. From mid first set, this one just kept getting better and better. At the end of the aborted Good Times Bad Times, my pants were wet (I think (certainly hoped) it was because someone had spilled water all over me).
All in all, even the "bad" ones were good this year. And I never thought I'd see it rain inside a building until 12/30 Kaiser. Can't wait to see what '02 brings.
>I'm surprised no one has mentioned Bethlehem, PA on 11.17.01. Help> Slip> Golden Road with a Franklin's encore. Awesome.
one of, if not the best help>slips ive heard
i think the first set knocks this one out of best of consideration, but the eyes deserves mention also no more do i is a great tune
waxing nostaligac with those lyrics
I have mulled this over in my head for a few hours and here's my two cents(From the 35 shows I saw this year)
Best Single set: Aragon Ballroom~1st Set-No Doubt
Best Sounding Show: Warren's X-Mas Jam-Phil in an alternate dimension
Best Spring show:Either 4/21 Free show or 4/24 Washington D.C.(Whiskey River..Yeah Man!)
Best Summer Show:Hartford(Biased due to Philzoners Gathering), But the real Gem had to be Hershy
Best Fall Show:I'm thinking it had to be 11/30
THE SHOW of the Year?!?!?!
It had to be NYE.
I have NEVER in my life reached such an incredibly high emotional state at a show before, I was dizzy to the point of nearly passing out(More on this when I post my review)
Have to give 11/08 some mention, wasn't there, but listening to it daily on my cd walkman. Sheit, Phil solo to start the show >eleven into the best Blues for Allah I've heard, into Watchtower>HelpSlipFranklin's whooha.
and the 2nd set ain't too shabby either with this phantastic Terrapin>Spanish Jam>Stella Blue>Spanish Jam>Terrapin. I love it, I love it, I wanna marry it
Well Hell I would have to vote for the local shows.I can`t vote on the east coast side.I`m with Dewit...12/30/01 at Oakland, man they were on fire. Then I would say the little old SWEETWATER it holds about 150 people or so.That night was with Bobie 6/10/01. There is no place like home.
Time to log in my vote:
1st: 12/1/01 NYC---It would be hard pressed to find better Phil moments than UJB>the Mtn. Jam finale.
2nd: 7/21/01 Hartford---Start to finish, awesome set list, and a sweet St. Stephens>Eyes
Wow, I only saw 2 Phil shows this summer and out of them I'd say -
8/4/01 Charlotte was spectacular and def. #1 !!
Out of what I've heard on disc - Nobody mentions 4/13/01 or 4/14/01 but I find them to be stellar ! Bust outs for Celebration AND Night of 1,000 Stars.
Also have to give props for the 4/20/01 show, never gets too far from the cd player...
Look out ! Redneck plans on doing many more shows for Spring 2002 ! Consider yourself warned - I got lots of Love to give !!!
The Stabler show, especially since it bookmarked Hershey was awesome...but the best Help-Slip-Franklin's to me are Hartford, and with out a doubt 12.2. New Years would count, but by then it was 2002.
Show I wasn't at, Cuthbert, Eugene...pretty awesome first set.
TC...it was the Hard to Handle that put you over, cop to it publicly.
Best show of 2001! 12/30 Kaiser!!
Honorable Mention: 2/18 Maritime, 4/30 Roseland, 6/30 Berkeley, 7/7 Red Rocks, 7/15, 8/4, 11/30!
4-20 in Charlotte was my first show,, and the realization that there really was something
special happening in the family again... (the Further Fests were nice,,, but almost almost felt
like a nostalga trip)
At first I thought it was just because it was my first PLQ show,, but the disks confirm-- Awesome
show (from a very limited perspective)
Kona-- Nice to have your input. All the positive
and healing vibes we can gather are being sent your way... Burnout Blues Band will noodle a few tunes in yr honor this weekend!!!
Looking forward to seeing all of you in 02'
Alger
Hey thanks everybody for keeping this a positive and continuous thread. I tend to agree that it was an amazing year musically.
I really want to hear 12/30 again. The first set coulda been a second set for all I care. 'twas rippin.
I actually have Hartford on my disc drive right now and will offer up the discs b & p style to the first three folks who email me.
Hasta,
David
I would have to say for my $.02,
#1) 4/20/01 Charlotte...** The jams and Music are back** plus I had Five of my close friends thanking me for taking them after the show!

over nine mos later, & ay'm still 'coming down' from his show that has just begun!
MfD
I'm going out on a limb. Out of the 22 shows I saw in 2001....I have to saw SOMERSET, WISCONSIN.
between the tube rides and 100 degree heat, and crappy equipment that let phil have two sets. Not to mention the unbroken chain, and the super dark off the wall help->slip. AND AT A WATER PARK!!!!
I have to agree with Redneck...4/13 and 4/14 have to be near the top of the list. The only thing holding them back would be the 1st set of 4/14 which wasn't my favorite but the rest of it more than made up for it.
i just read all the posts, and i was getting worried that no one had mentioned bethlehem. i must say, i saw phil about 10 times this year, and that show blew my mind away. absolutely.
>one had mentioned bethlehem
there are a couple mentions...A most worthy
show of note though...
I have to go with Hartford from the ones I've seen. Great Woods (old phart rights to call things by their proper names) the night before was sweet but laid back. Got to the place late the next night, can't remember why, got to my seat just in time for the last couple from Ratdog. (KKid, you got to me, dropped in a first day mailorder for the Orpheum as penance) The energy was incredible, by the time we got the proto-bunny Cassidy the hair on my arms was standing up. Then the fine and fancy picking of Kind Solomons/Stronger, and a second set stronger than it's list. Drove the whole way home without any music on, it had all been played for the day.
>>THE SHOW of the Year?!?!?!
>>It had to be NYE.
>>I have NEVER in my life reached such an incredibly high emotional state at a show before, I was dizzy to the point of nearly passing out(More on this when I post my review)
I'll second that!
>>the thrill of hearing that incredible
caution jam again, and again, and again always pulls me to putting in cd 3.
Its not a caution jam, its CAUTION to the max! It wouldnt be right to do the lyrics, but man is it caution. The 2nd set of 2/18/01 is outrageous. Probably the most powerful intro in to Mr. Fantasy I've heard and the Wharf Rat>Rag Jam>HUGE BOMB>Best Phil Viola I've ever seen is enough to reckon with.
>>if only i coulda saw the dead
boy do I feel your pain.....but I can imagine
I don't really like the 2/18 Fantasy ... the Reggae thing that Warren and Molo do during Jimmy's solo I find really annoying ... the rest of the set is amazing though
12/31 Mr. Fantasy blew that one away
Hey Tyler,
I'll agree with you on that one, but as for 2/18 Im in it all for the beginning power of the song, though I really like how they've been going into MR. FANTASY with the bridge, as they did on 12/31 and 7/28.
If your a big fantasy fan like me you gotta check out 6/27/01, it rocks! let me know if you need a copy and I'll hook you up with a B&P.
Hey Kids, I just checked all the posts on this subject and think I have it tallied correctly to this point....
I think this might be the best indicator of how diverse we all are & might be some good fodder for the future.
All we have succeeded in doing is picking the MUST-HAVE list, and hey there's nothing wrong with that!
So enjoy and IF you haven't voted yet DO IT this list is by NO means complete
(This was BEST show only I didn't count second place, also some folks didn't actually choose a first.)

Hey Tapecat, thanks for tallying. I have been spending too much time on the mountain. We've had over four feet of snow in the past week here in the Northwest. So I haven't been checking in.
Now if someone can help me find copies of 12/30.
Hasta Lasagna,
David

You folks are great. Thanks shakergirl. Some interesting but significant categories. :-)
Lucky to have seen so many shows this year. Well, then again, aren't we all lucky we have Phil and Friends?
Keep your favorites comin' around. This is a positive thread.
>Worst Weather: 7/1 Greek Theatre day-show
S-Girl, all I want to know, was what the hell happened weather-wise at this show to make this category?
I'd nominate 7/7 Red Rocks, but I dug the storm too much and packed my Gore-Tex.
MY vote is for 11-17 at Stabler, although 12-31, and the NYE run overall was incredible.
>>Worst Weather: 7/1 Greek Theatre day-show
>>S-Girl, all I want to know, was what the hell happened weather-wise at this show to make this category?
It truly was a beautiful day in Berkeley as it always is, but dang, 90 degrees of blaring sun burning your face isnt to great during the show, esspecailly with all the references to the sun in the 1st set. Phil had to cool us down with the 2nd set blues. Just about everyone was ~~fried~~ at this show, security guards were even handing out free water and sunscreen. Then when the show got out around 6pm a whole lot of burnt Phil heads roamed the streets of Berkeley, overjoyed and exhausted into the setting sun of Northern California.
"God I love berkeley!" -Phil 6/30

Damn I could go on & on....... I think we need a new thread for this stuff?????
I love that this came around. Best moments.
2.10.-Fillmore, when the noisy assholes finally left, and the 10 inches at Copper that am.
11.?.-Oakdale, meeting Shaker and Tucan in the lot for the first time, and equal to, 04.30 at the diner, meeting Bali for the first time.
07.28. -Meeting TC and hanging out, save would have been better if their had been any food left...and that moment when we both looked out of the side of our faces and simultaneously rolled eyeballs....click!!!
07.28. -Meeting the Rev., who I had really wanted to meet all month, badly. I can't mention the honorable mention, that came later. (and to think, this is my least favorite show of all time)
07.29. -Hershey, Phil looking over at the kids...
04.30. -GTBD when we were called assholes as we called it....and not getting pushed down the stairs.
04.29. -Asbury Park besides the whole show, and the 2nd set sandwich, the ToNs of StEeL.
12.2. -Whole show, 11.30, whole show.
?.?. - Orpheum Run, fall, Brian, because you saved me.
Orpheum Run, least favorite-the staff sucks, they ripped SJF and me off hugely, they stole my phone, and ...my second least favorite show.
12.30. Kaiser, best sets of music ever!!!!
Honorable Mentions: LessThan, GraterThan, Aron, Carol, B,J & K, Gregg&Ms.B. Because they are the greatest people in the world, no holds barred, who ask for nothing, and give everything. The honorable mention, you know who you are, thanks, there were some really great moments. TC and Taperrob, we haven't gotten there yet, but you definetely are part of a wonderful year.
Yeah Headlight, like Lord Henry said - it was scorching heat - blazing sun. I usually love the heat, but it was just a bit over the top for me (had a lil sunburn from the day b4). There really aren't too many spaces to escape the direct sun there either...which made it challenging (imagine about 50 folks sitting on top of one another next to the beer garden just to get a spot of shade).
Great show tho....
TC - Nice categories!
Couldn't stop laughing at this one:
>Best Bloodletting: Taper Rob nailing Shaker's toe with his Mikestand.
Ouch. It's a scar I like! teeheee...
Best Boyscout moment: Taper Rob coming through on the spot with the napkins & bandaids.
Dewitt: Who would've guessed that the parking lot would still be a great place to meet friends after all these years?
Best quote I remember hearing...
Some guy got busted for pissing on the lawn at the SPAC. Security rushed over and yelled "HEY! You're pissing in MY YARD!" The pisser turned to security and calmly said, "You're taking this rather personally, aren't you?"
Most Fun Dancing: 6/10 Crusader - dancin at the back on top of rickety chairs
Worst Dancing: 11/28 Beacon - this guy was dancing Elaine-style (Seinfeld) - it was pretty funny except he was tall & it was impossible to see - I kept having to move back & forth out of tempo (making me a bad dancer) just to get a site-line
Most Spiritiual Moment: Greek Theatre 7/1 - me too - it lasted the entire day even after the show - maybe too long ;)
Least Spiritual Moment: 7/20 Great Woods - smelling puke everywhere, then almost getting busted for smoking pot when I wasn't & didn't have anything on me (but the show was killer!)
Favorite Special Guest: 12/21 - Robert Randolph
Favorite Line on Tour: Hando-of-sando
Best Beer on tour: also 7/31 - $10 dollar 22 oz Corona cup - just b/c that's too funny
Favorite Bust-out: 6/10 - Mason's, 6/12- Hard 2 Handle, 7/3 - King Solomon's
Weirdest Tour Moment: 7/7 Red Rocks - Is that Bah?
Best "Am I the only one seeing this?" moment: 7/28 Camden - Ben Franklin Bridge UFO rainbow lights going to the Other One
Most reliable taper: Taperrob - 99.9% uptime & always has xtra tapes, batteries, etc
Most deadicated: Tapecat - I personally saw him at the Kaiser on 12/30 @ 8:15 AM - 1st on line
Weirdest Taper: (also best recording) 2/12 - unknown taper saying "I'm just warning you - I'm on 10 hits of liquid so I'm not sure how good this is gonna turn out
Best Pre-show: 7/22 SPAC, me, Shaker & BaliG visiting Big Uncle Sam, Santa & Friends; 2/13 me, Shaker & Lx seeing Mt. Hood & exploring outer Portland while Lx filmed w/ dance music playing
Best Merch: sick glass inside Maritime Hall
Best view: 4/27 Philly - perfect spot on balcony rail
Best security: Beacon - big thanks to Booker
Worst: Electric Factory
Cutest kid: 7/22 SPAC - 2 yr old squirt in a Jerry batik
Best lot: Red Rocks, SPAC
Worst: Great Woods - man those guys are a pain in the @ss
Best food: Sushi 12/31
Worst: 7/6: BaliG & my grilled cheeze pucks
Best bathroom: 7/21 - Hartford - clean, no lines
Worst: Maritime - by 2/18 it was absolutely disgusting!
Best alternate scene inside a venue: 2/12-3 - the bar downstairs had at least 10 TVs of the show & a whole dance floor w/ the soundboard pumped in
Worst: Beacon basement - so smokey & you can't hear any music, BUT a grAte place to meet up & have a smoke
***BEST IN SHOW:**** Beacon, 11/30 - tough call tho
My Faves are 12/30 and 12/31, with a Very Honorable mention to 11/23 Boston!! New Potato and Low Spark in two non stop sets!!
Best Phil Quote: Something like "Why is playing New York like a good fuck?!"
Answer: ???... APPLAUSE
Best hair-raising moment: 11/26 Beacon opener Comes A Time
Funniest: "Make Jimmy Sing"
->Best Phil Quote: Something like "Why is playing New York like a good fuck?!" Answer: ???...
the NY audience's applause sounds of an affectionate spanking en masse
11-17-01 was the BOMB
4-24-01 was a BLAST
SPAC was really nice after 3 days of bluegrass in upstate New York
camden was GREAT
I GO FOR THE BOMBS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
11-17-01
#1 7-21-01 Hartford
#2 4-21-01 Morgantown,WV(free)
#3 7-18-01 Columbus,OH(3rd row seats)
i was at the 8-4-01 and the set PLQ played was great, just not enough
From the shows I have seen, this is what I have to say:
Favorite spring show:4/24/01
Favorite summer show:7/29/01
Favorite fall show:11/17/01
Best energy show:12/21/01
Favorite show run:4/25-4/29/01
My most intoxicating run:11/30-12/3/01
Most spiritual: 4/14 (besides NYE)
My $.02:
Best set of music: 11-08-01, Chicago, set I: Phil's solo bass jam with other members joining in, followed by Phil's take of 9-11. Didn't think I'd ever see a show where "The Eleven" is the first song out of the gates.
Most fun show: 7-29-01, Hershey: Great little venue, getting rained on but not drenched, jamming w/ Willie, Lovelight and Viola, also hearing the loud train horn from the amusement park during the break and later getting Casey Jones for an encore!
Most meaningful show: 7-15-01, Deer Creek: My fiancee's first show so she can grok what it's all about!
Show I wasn't at but wish like hell I was: 4-15-01, Orlando: Great music in the land of the mouse! Every time I hear the great tape I have of this one, it's as unique and special a feeling as hearing Donald Duck have an orgasm!
just got a copy of 11/17/01- and it was just like i remembered- INSANE!! that watchtower, unbroken, passenger, what a phreakin show.
my top show will be a tie, 11.17 and 11.30....just too tough to decide. especially with "no more do i" in the mix...
God Bless America.
And Phil Lesh
>>Best "Am I the only one seeing this?" moment: 7/28 Camden - Ben Franklin Bridge UFO rainbow lights going to the Other One
Schnee gave me the pic you took of that & yes I think you were the only one...heheheh
I meant Orlando 4/14 or 4/15 i don't know
I have no concept of time
The NYE shows should occupy a category in a different universe. That said, omittimg all BS except for the PLQ sets, my "Best P&F show in 2001" choice is:
7/14/2001 - Alpine Valley Music Theater
Asbury Park, NJ 4-29-01
and
Hartford, CT 7-21-01
and
SPAC 7-22-01
02-02-02 Walter Trout & the Radicals, Debbie Davis Blues Band, E.C. Smith, Kona Blues Fest.....
3 1/2 hours of Walter F%#$@%@King Trout scaling every fish in the audience!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
6/30 Greek -- the best sound (only GREAT Cutler sound I ever heard) and most complex, compelling second set of the year.
7/3 Eugene -- Just check out the okie set list that freakin ROCKED...in a 3,000 seat outdoor venue, next to a river, 75 degrees at midnight, laying in the grass staring at the stars...yes!
7/4 Snoqualmie -- Deadly Viola Lee Blues, just sick, and it made the entire show GREAT!
I won't even mention 12/30 and 11/17 which were absolutely sick, and are must haves for evey collection...
2001 tour kicked my ass. I feel I saw a good chunk. My reply is so late because I just got my net hooked up at college. I'll try to list from 'weakest' to best.
PNC: unbelieveable blue sky, cumberland rocked, what's with the security hawking everyone? big beers. Show was alright. Traffic made me miss Les Claypool.
(I just realized it's impossible to rate the next shows under weaker or better, but I'll try.)
ATLANTA (aug 5th): Made me angry phil played 1st. 3 sickening violas that I called. Sugaree= best ever played by them, lovelight w/ tedeschi was awesome, masons!!!!! help slip franklin's was WAY outta order, but still made due!
JONES BEACH: Scarlet>fire was ON! man, the place shook during fire space. China has a new buzz to it (anyone notice?) Haynes was playing "over the hills and far away" by Zeppelin during testing Soulshine w/ baracco on piano is KEY! galactic rocked. they FINALLY played all of GTBT during St. Stephens! atta boys!
OAKDALE CT: Wow, I didn't think I'd ever like a revolution as much as I did. Sunshine of your love sent chills through my spine, and the prejam rocked! People seem to cheer louder for beatles songs than dead.... hm. I didn't dig soulshine encore, but you can't dig em all. 1st set was slow, but dire wolf was played well, so was ramble on rose.
MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM B'town: Wow, shakedown opener. Playin in the band TWICE!? 1/2 mtn jam, bertha, uncle johns, fire, blue sky liberty midnight hour encore w/ page!? woah. Baracco stayed on stage as well, and they played a storm. baracco showde em up though.
ROSELAND BALLROOM: another last show of the tour, this one was almost unexplainable. GTBT was NOT meant to be teased in the mid of Stephens, phil pointed at each band member when he let it rip, and everyone shrugged, then haynes said "i dont care what the neighbors say!" fotd was great, pride of cucomonga! the 11 was picked so so well as usual. soulshine was a new one to me. help slip eleven slip franklin's really set the mood. terrapin DID HAVE SPACE BEHIND IT! Bird song was started of by freebird - strange. whole show really ruledHARTFORD MEADOWS
MARATIME HALL, SF (2-18-01): This show and the beacon 11-30-01 are tied for my two favorites. Not even the cds can explain what happened. 3 steaming violas, a heartstopping bertha, 17 minute fantasy with a raggae mix in it, 3 dark stars, dancin in the streets played twice in the 1st set! scarlet was awesome. midnight hour was uncomparable. encore went kinda like :Lucy in the sky, there comes a time, something, GDTRFB, we bid u g'night! that night was magic, especially with all the visual effects (ink and lighting and shrooms)
BEACON 11-30-01: wow. evil NFA opener, TEARS OF A CLOWN is the BEST cover phil does besides dead. nothing can be said about fantasy or fire or while my guitar dark star, eyes, cosmic, anything played. it was untouchable. I can't keep writing about this show because it will make me late for my class. I will see ALL of you this tour.

I would have to vote on Alpine Valley since that was the only Phil I saw last year. My ears are still ringing!
Every show i've seen rocked! Asbury,Spac,Jones beach,Stabler.Every beacon show,i missed 12/1 and 12/3 however to put a crown on one it would have to be 11/30/01!!!
i'd have to say hartford and 11/24 at the orpheum in boston. top notch.
I'm sorry, 11-30-01 was the gold, but one could argue maratime hall 2-18-01 to be a tie. GET those shows if you haven't been to em. Meadows was unbelieveable, but think about those and Memorial aud VT, and roseland first. See y'all on tour and at the vibes.
HANDS DOWN SARATOGA SPRINGS WAS TOTALLY INSANE TO BAD I LIVE IN CANADA. THE FUCKING K C JONES WAS RIDICOULS
Better late than never
2/18/....my favorite..from start to finnish.

Hands down Red Rocks 7/6 and 7/7/01. On 7/7, the music and the elements combined to make this one impressive show, although the thunder and lightning may make it hard for those of you not there to truly enjoy it. :-(
Runners up were the three bonus shows I got:PNC, Camden and Hotlanta"

Summer's best encore?
St Stephen at Red Rocks 7-7
>>>the thrill of hearing that incredible
caution jam again, and again, and again always pulls me to putting in cd 3.
I generally listen from beginning to end as I drive around for hours asome nights.
BTW, Ever heard the Caution Jam from 5-6-81, DP #13 I think. That one is awesome."

Yeah Bucky, you should have seen the looks on peoples' faces when they pulled that out on top of an already incredible, not to mentin soaking wet show!"

...I know you loved Red Rocks this summer too!
7/7/01 was epic, not just the show itself but the phreaking thunder storm that rolled right into, over us and then past. Standing on the moon with St. Stephen.
I just wish I had a picture of Jimmy, with the rain pouring down and the lightning striking all around, just blowing a wisp of hair back from his face and never missing a lick!"
