7/11/08 OC Fair
Just thought I'd write a quickie review of this since B.B. was A-mazing! The local Orange Co,. Fair usually has something pretty good every year. (like emmylou/del mc coury coming up!)
Anyways, Mavis was good, band alright. They did "The Weight" and "Freedom Highway" that stood out.
Leon Russell comes out with his cane and his band did a tight 40-ish min set. I'm not that familiar w/ his catalog, but it was some funky boogie.
Now, B.B. Believe it or not, my 1st time seeing him! I've ALWAYS wanted to, but he's usually a spendy ticket. Well my neighbor took me for free! :-) His band was A+ !! Super tight, w/ a horn section. They played for about 10 mins before BB comes out and takes his seat, walking right into his solo, lick time not missing a beat.
His mind, voice and playing were all still VERY impressive. His story telling and command of the audience were amazing. I don't have a setlist, but the standards were played, well..See him while ya can folks, he's still bringing it at 82!! he went passed curfew till almost 11pm. Didn't time it, but it was definitely over an hour....1.5hrs ? Great time man...go!
that's quite a combo of music.
glad you had fun and thanks for sharing.
I'm with you turtle, My first time wuz last year, with my son(he plays guitar and fiddle). It wuz at HOB, BB does COMMAND the audience, it truly is sumthing to see...and the stories are, well ya know, you were there...it's cool how he sits an still get's the energy out...
God Bless Him ..for real
I'm right w/ya on anyone in which the opp arises..would most def...go see him
Glad you had a nice evening...thanks for the view
I saw Leon last year and he was a lot of fun! Bummed to be missing him in SF this week...but Mavis Staples is playing as part of the SF Jazz fest soon, I am hoping to catch that one...
