My friends and I are getting pretty stoked for the lone NW show. Phil loves Portland, so we're confident the band will continue to cook. Any Portlanders have a pre-func establishment to recommend?
See you there!

well, I called a revolution encore night 2 in chicago, and they did it at the next show. I also was calling for st stephen>newpotatoe night 2 chicago, but they played it backwards..I also wore my box of rain tshirt that night. So my picks are pretty close, and obscure, but last night I called phil to sing Time again in the second set, during the live stream online chat, and they played it. Wow!
so I'll do everyone a favor and pick portlands setlist, it follows...

Remember friends- it's not what they play, it's how they play it.
I love the west coast: lived in Santa Cruz and arcata throughout the early 90s and saw lots of GD out west and always felt the band Jamed like they were home at a backyard kegger. With that in mind let's call the hot backyard set list; and just a caveat that I sense a 3 setter with accoustics!

see it really does matter what they play. The band is tight I saw a few shows in NYC and new England. what they play is crucial how they play is up to how capable the listener is of cutting some ole timers some slack and being grateful for the music. Don't mean to be harsh but this is it folks we have maybe 5 years left of this magic let's enjoy it for what the artists are now!

That's the Mt. St. Helens "fire on the mountain" eruption show right?
That is the legend. But wasn't the eruption in May, 1980?
It means the concert starts at 7:30PM. I thought it meant doors open at 7:30PM but Orlando show started at 7:30 and I was still making my way inside and missed the first two songs. I would get there by 730 if you can make it.
Thanks. Yeah, I just got through to the venue and they said doors at 6:30, show at 7:30.
6-12-80 was my first show and yes Mt St Helens had it's 3rd major eruption shortly after 9PM that night DURING FOTM.
Anyone setup for live ustream?

I love this music, I love these people, and I love that the scene continues to bring us all together. Everybody's playing in the heart of gold band!
ummm maybe a HC Sunshine tonight to ease back into the Great NW? I loved doing that mini tour back in '94, lost the shirt since then though.
And none of have turned to salt because we haven't looked behind! :^D

how long has it taken for furthur to put their lives up for sale on their site lately? would like to hear the last couple nights
yes, next is the Peaceful Valley from Barton Hall. I saw a version during the rehearsal run in Mill Valley (where I live). I think Magnolia Mtn is a better fit for this band, but I also think they're improving as the tour progresses
first time tunes? let me check. I have most of the tour, but not all.

Thanks for keeping it real Rob..
This one really should be John's.
Full credit to Mr. Weir for singing a great Days Between
Days = Ouch. What a crappy song, especially sung by Weir. Glad I won't be hearing this Friday. Kind of lame they played it at the Gorge and again in Portland. I know there are a lot of people who were/or at both. The rest of the 2nd set looks pretty great. I am sure they'll get a few more choice tunes.
china cat
i know you rider
Day Between is a great song and sums up the whole long strange trip of the Grateful Dead.
you wouldn't think days was a crappy song if you knew the story behind it and why jerry wrote it. Its also one of Jers most beautiful ballads and one of his works he was most pleased with. although the vocals are abit off, I was at 12/19/93 which deadbase has listed as the best days between ever. Check it out. The nscarlet fire jaming is insane as well.
^^^^ I agree, Days Between a great Hunter/Garcia ballad that helps them hit the hit points in other songs
I was hopin for china rider on friday.. I hope it is rippin and can't wait to hear it.
Day's Between......crappy song? That's a joke,right? How old are you?
I seem to remember an epic Days Between at an Autzen Stadium show back in 93? The flags were blowing and Jerry let that song build to the biggest peak before tearing it down. This show looks good...a bit disjointed but interesting set list. I am still smiling from the 3/3 Chicago show. Can't wait for summer.

best one I ever saw was 12/11/94 in Oakland-religious. Everyone should check that one out.

C'mon gang... Shouldn't really matter who sings the tune.
It all comes from the same place...
Enjoy this while you can people! It's not going to be around in this setting forever.
One day, ALL we'll have is recorded history. And we'll remember how cool it was to watch a setlist come alive on our screens for just that one night.
Bobby sings this and Phil sings that and JK sings this and that... All just part of the continuing experiment.
BUT, having stated that... So glad we made it! You know you love being a part of this show!!!!
SO ENJOY AND REALLY CELEBRATE IT!!!! As for the rest... "they ain't gonna learn what they don't wanna know..."
bobby's gotta belt out one more! great way to pick it up at the end of the show...

Find me a version of Days with anyone singing it where the lyrics and solos are nailed and I'll listen to it and maybe reconsider. I've never heard a nailed version and saw too many fumbled versions to think it is a good song. It is slow, plodding and boring and makes me cringe when I hear it.
Also, notice no Phil songs tonight. He saved his "voice" for Friday.
seriously disappointed. if you have nothing to do and want to waste your time listening to a couple warm-up sets for phil's birthday, give it a listen.
The boys were strong tonight even if the set list was not as sexy as Chicago or Denver night two. The good news is that they are improving their overall consistency. Very few weak moments which is a big improvement over Hammerstein night two and other fall shows I saw that were uneven at best.
Listen to the Duprees, Mama Tried and Passenger from set 1 - all were special with the Passenger being especially smoking.
Set 2 Scarlet>Fire, Reuben, Days between and China>Rider were ripping. It was so cool to see big Bill Walton in the "house that Walton built" up front grooving to a killer Scarlet/Fire jam. Bob nailed days between which is truly a special garcia/hunter collaboration. The Rider was euphoric, the best I've seen Furthur do so far.
Big hugs all around celebrating the end of tour.
Looks like Phil's birthday on Friday is well set up to be a great show. I can't wait.
thanks everyone for the setlist updates and comments in general.
this is dang exciting.
can you feel it?
question: will they be able apparently to stream phil's bday on friday or no? what am i saying, i'll be at work for a decent part of it, but, reason I ask, i haven't been able to get the live show to stream yet, only some preloaded thing that starts from the philzone.com homepage. is that the stream or do i need to load the chi...whatever stream link or?
help a streaming noob out if you know what i did wrong would you? thx
i will see you this summer in CO. i know already they're coming back. question is where. better be big or multi night run somewhere smaller like red rocks run in 04. better book it now. hee hee. can't wait regardless to listen to these shows. God bless and thanks be to phil, bob, and everyone else, who put in serious effort and thoughtfulness to make this latest adventure just a thrill a minute! for real!
giddyup, let's ride.
Thx for all the updates..Got my Philly summer tix already..seeya there :-)
Maybe Bill Walton will post on the zone now?
We would be a much more grateful audience than his the tv audience for his NBA commentator gig lol
Friday's gonna be HUGE I think. What a homecoming you folks are gonna get.
Drink it up
Cheers Ted!
In response to Rcknrndwu:
take a listen to Days Between from Redrocks '03. I know that band was rough at times and took some time to gel, but by the time they got to Redrocks they grooved very well. Joan is possibly the best vocalist the band has ever had for certain songs and this version of Days Between is by far the best I've ever seen live. I do think it comes across pretty well on the recordings also. All 5 nights at Redrocks 2003 really cooked and the DAYS was my personaal highlight from the whole run.
"Joan is possibly the best vocalist the band has ever had for certain songs "

Thanks Michael. I'll listen to the Red Rox version. Joan is a great singer and I just might like hearing a good singer on Days. Appreciate it!
I agree about that Days Michael..........was a stellar moment.........
What looks not to be on everyone's "dream set list" last night is so misrepresentative of the quality of music and arrangement this band is doing.
Let's just say if the Dead had done this setlist in the 90's, folks would have been predicting the band's demise (and would probably have been right) Furthur is reinventing, re-energizing many of the songs and there is no doubt that John K's musical DNA and hard work is a BIG part of that. Anytime I hear folks denigrate him, I always want to say, "and you were thinking of WHO as a better fit for this band?" Yikes.
Last night I heard quite a few songs I had little compelling interest in hearing--until Furthur played them, that is. And so tightly played. Very striking and impressive. Huge energy when needed. Only complaint was the placement of Bob's REALLY subdued West LA and Days Between. But both really well played, mind you. However, I am not crazy about this "third party" setlist building by non band-members, if true. Hopefully as they get furthur down the road, the band will make the call, even to the point of NO concrete setlist.
All in all, I was massively impressed with last night. Great crowd, big energy, tight, tight, tight and Phil looks as if he is going to do this until he drops, he is having a ball.
A C- setlist, a strong B+ show.
So, did they play Bucket last night after the Fire?
As far as Days goes, Autzen 1993. It rained sunshine.
I thought the show was pretty good overall...of the seven shows I've seen on this tour last nights first set was perhaps my least favorite...Picasso is not my fav tune and sound was not dialed in at all as they got going but improved quickly. Nice job by JK on Dupree's...first BTW last night? not sure but well played and sung by Bobby. They tore it up on Passenger....this is no doubt one of their strongest tunes....
set two: volume came up...sound now dialed in.. .Scarlet>Fire, crisp and clean...crowd approved. West LA sung be Weir and I thought he did a great job...funky groove. Rueben gets the crowd hopping & bopping again...then Days....surprise to me as The Dead played this tune during their appearance at the Gorge last May....another well played haunting version from Weir....some folks seem to think this tune can take the wind from the sails but I disagree...last night it was powerful and built up to where it needs to go...jam into a familiar groove...yeah China! My personal Furthur fav...I think JK nails this dynamic duo so please don't split it up and he didn't driving the band into a blistering Rider..perhaps the hottest of the tour...major crowd pleaser....during the Donor rap I whispered to a friend a Touch encore who send this group home happy...but instead its a ballad...Knockin, pretty good but not a good tune for Bobby to sing imho...might think about trading verses on this with JK...then surprise...the Touch encore...funny how this stuff happens
They drew a good crowd for a Monday night...perhaps 7500 give or take a few...
So the tour is over...and now were bringing it home to celebrate with Phil on home turf "we ain't finished...we ain't even begun"
Thanks for a great tour guys...see in SF!
oh yeah, and who's got my extra?
>>>So, did they play Bucket last night after the Fire?>>>
sheeesh...forgot about the Bucket..who made that setlist, lol. Bucket was great, Bobby stretching out the "least I'm enjoying the ride"...very nice.
I'm from Philadelphia and I was out in the NW visiting friends and family so this was my first GD-related Oregon show. I had a great time but the show was kinda middling musically. maybe a 2.5-3/5. It had its moments but lacked flow and had a few good tunes dragged down by slow slow Weir tempos and his talk-singing.
Also, the sound could've been better. I was on the center floor, just in front of the board and there was significant bounce-back of the PA sound from the back wall. This was a bit distracting.
I enjoyed a lot of the 80s/90s tunes because they came unexpectdly for me. Picasso was a strong opener. Everyone was energetic and tight musically though Bobby's vocals seemed low and indistinct.
I liked hearing JK sing Built to Last and loved his midi solo.
BT Wind was well played but the tempo REALLY seeemed to sag after a few minutes.
The best moment of the first set was the JK-led jam out of "Peaceful Valley." Peaceful Valley itself sounds (like most of the RA tunes) like a lost Wake of the Flood era GD song. I really thought the band was gonna go somewhere dark and intense after it, like "the Other One" but instead after a few minutes the jam dissipated into a strong Passenger.
Throughout the show, Russo seemed welcomely louder in the mix than in Atlantic City. Jay and the back up singers still seemed superfluous to me.
The crowd seemed most enthused during the 2nd set Scarlet>Fire opener. The transition to Fire and Fire itself seemed a bit muddled. Lots of danceable fun, but not peak. And JK seemed to struggle with the phrasing of Fire. Still, my favorite moment of the show was the absolute JOY of hearing JK rip into the Fire intro riff as the crowd let up a gigantic cheer.
A short spacey intro led to a well-played Hell in a Bucket (yes, they did play it) and then a slow slow slow West LA Fadeaway (Weir spoken word remix version) that still had some nice funky licks. I remember Jeff taking a good solo too
I didn't expect Reuben, and really enjoyed it and the shimmery jam that came after it as well as the spacey-ness that went into Days Between. I really enjoyed this. Yes, it's a very slow tune. It's always been but even the Jerry-versions had a sort-of talk-sing feel to it and Weir's performance here really hit it for me. It was my favorite vocal performance of his of the evening.
And the lights were great: blue and yellow spiralling forms on the screen.
The jam into China>Rider caught be off guard. I liked how he band kept the China rhythm going in the jam for a couple minutes before falling into the actual song. And the combo was strong.
The Knockin' encore had pretty bad vocals. Weir messed up a couple entrances and did his talk-singing. Touch to close it out was energetic and I was glad that JK shared vocal duties.
Memorial Coliseum is a DEATH pit for sound. Worst venue, oh god, of anywhere I have ever seen a show. Last night's sound was easily the best one could have expected from that piece of crap venue. Portlanders have been debated razing the place for the last year. "If I had my way", indeed..........
Wow, just awake after last night's show.....
It's very interesting to read folks comments, I've got to say before you read this, I may have had a better time than most folks and this review will reflect this. Albeit this was my first furthur show and I was very excited to see it.
Picasso->I have been a Weir hater forever, but finally began to see the light recently...this blew me out of the water, great opening, the best Picasso I've seen.
Dupree's->Big midi electro space shuffle, very very psychedelic in that first set space carnival sort of way.
FOTD->Very delicately delivered, not my favorite, but artfully done and dynamically sound.
Now the transition from FOTD to Mama Tried was seamless and quite clever, I was impressed by the cornering and enjoyed the MT sing a long, very fun.
Built To Last, this completely tore at the heartstrings, big arena sob down moment, lots of love for the old old friends in our BTL posse. Lots of hugs big emotion...and here we are with Furthur, built to last, bringing the GD into the future once again.
Black Throated Wind was a psychedelic mind bender, the tempo was slowed to near bending...last time I heard it played was in Portland at the 1995 shows, this version was sublime with a huge finish...kudos Bobby, fine fine form.
PEACEFUL VALLEY....wow wow wow wow. In the bathroom after the set, an old bravado filled head said, "Old timers, what was the song between Black Throated and Passenger. That had to be some sweet old Jerry nugget from back in the day?" I turned (I'm 38) and said, "It's a Ryan Adams song.", he said, "Bryan Adams, wtf?" I corrected him and tried to give him some background (in a noisy spun out Wookfest Restroom) he decided he didn't like the answer or the cut of my jib and then called out "All right, name your first show to all in the bathroom" and a chorus of venues and years were bleated out"...it was a funny interaction, but spoke to the power of JK's treatments of these Ryan Adams songs, to the less informed they come across as "unearthed" Jerry gems. The jam out of Peaceful Valley was killer and unleashed the Passenger. I thought I'd done my share of Q and other PnF passengers, but here I was on board again, dancing my ass off and loving every second, hot hot hot. Great Set Closer.
Set 2
Scarlet->Fire impeccable, huge, liquid, the epitome of what we do as a family band...sick dance out love waves rolling over the entire place...just living in an idealized version of Dead music...the intro to Hell in A Bucket was so subtle and pyschedelic...and I have to stop and comment about the jammy tripped out level of this band. They are definitely at that point of playing the notes in between the spaces...there is that deep GD weirdness in the juicy corners of all of these songs. This setlist looks fairly mediocre on paper, but these guys used these songs to deliver the full package, quite artfully done. The Bucket raged, DANCE PARTY and then had the most amazing little reggae breakdown in the middle, that was so trippy and very fun...now some might say that Bobby shatnerized West LA, but talk about working the volume dynamics,,that tune slinked out and Weir whispered the lyrics giving it a very very dark haunting pyschedelic groove...I was floored floored. Ruben was the perfect antidote to the darkness and bounced electric....the jam post Ruben went deep, almost to the point where it should be labeled ->space->Days Between, not the place where one would normally expect a complete out of body spaceship landing, but there it was. Days Between was a monster. I'll admit I was at the Gorge last May and had the initial oh really Days again in the PNW, but they have really retooled this into a powerhouse electric monster. This Days didn't lilt wistfully, it was fire and electricity with some amazing amazing guitar work on JK's part....it was the hugest interpretation of this song I've ever heard...truly a treat, extremely over the top. Then the jam out of Days was sweet and the transition into China was soooo clever and quirky dirty and electric...a true pinnacle and the same treatment was given to the transition into Rider...amazing amazing.
Knocking->Touch so appropriate hot, wonderful, I can't wait for the tapes. Thanks furthur, please come back to the PNW this summer. Let's keep this engine charging.
Back @ my Desk....
Agree w/ above, Strong Show if not a sexy setlist. Not the best show of the tour but the boys delivered the goods on a number of instances, most notably was the end jam of passenger....it began with a Weir Misqued lyric and quick recovery, then they hit the launch pad and laid down a jam better than any I had seen of Furthur thusfar...everyone was on board at this point, having had to do a bit of work to sift through the rest of the opening set for some nuggets, passenger Hit the motherload.
Scarlet Fire was a Given, with the History of those songs in this building, and they played it top notch, really extending the inbetween jam...teasing the fire then backing away then hittin it hard! Great Version, Smiles all around!
Then Bucket..Nice Hard Rockin version (my first post Jer Bucket) big crescendo at the end, Solid.
WLAFade, Super Funky & Fun.
Reuben was good, solid.
Days, for me was epiphanal (that's a word, right?)
Not my fav choice goin in, knew Bob was going to sing it, had some concern from reading previous posts of previous versions form tour, but man He and the band DELIVERED! HUGE vocal lead Cresceno, with the immediate pin drop following... The "rise and fall" factor in that song is amazing...
I encourage whoever asked for a Days that was delivered Vocally and instrumentally, this version might just be what the dr. ordered
China Rider - GREAT! Best Post Jer Rider ever for me - Headlight verse is gaining momentum these days.. Then on the jam, right when JK is supposed to take it out, his guitar rig unxepectedly goes totally dead...no sound at all...he switched guitars to no avail, had a tech or two scramblin to fix while the rest of the band vamped fro what seemed like an eternity... Finally came back to life and he turned around and SLAYED us for 3 or 4 more times through the progression! Over the top! Very Solid Ending... no disappointment anywhere in that room at that point from what I could tell.
Knockin encore - Fine
Touch - Very Fun, Happy Smiles and Hugs all around.
All in all, great time, Very Solid, not Stellar, but VERY Solid Show with just enough of those go out of your head moments we all come for to make it worth every effort.
Nice to be able to sleep in my own bed after a show for once too!
FURTHUR ain't no joke. It's real.
Ooooh, yeah I forgot to mention that JK technical difficulties moment...that was so dramatic....they were firing on full and then his equipment melted, he turned (I had a great view) worked with his tech, they rest of the band was rocketing down the tunnel, but the stablizers were off line and they were about to veer out of control, but then JK got the green light, turned around and unleashed the warp drive that pushed the whole thing over the top...so damn fun.
Yeah, the guitar/amp breakdown was riveting. They were JUST getting ready to cut to John for his big solo and something crapped out in his rig...mayhem...Jeff holds the fort on keys for a few more measures...In about 15 seconds, John swaps guitars...still nothing...John waving wildly for help.. two crew JUMPED on it, fixed whatever had crapped out or become unplugged in about 10 seconds and JK just tore into this part, over and over and upward. What a great "pit crew" moment. I was impressed.
My hometown show and the one (1) and only of the tour. I have to say the set list was such a let down after listening to the band marching around the east coast and making strong statements in many venues and even Denver was huge.
As noted by others when Phil and bob visited the Nortwest last year we got both a Bucket and and Daze Between from Bob and I hated to have to note that fact.
But what this band did offer last night was nothing short of amazing music. Even on what I would say were interesting choices of song selection the playing itself was mostly exceptional most of the time. This band's energy level is higher than what I remember the GD to have been in their last five or six years. It can't be just the youth-ful energy of the newest members because them two trailblazers were both on top of their game too (Happy B-day to Phil! G-d Bless You!) -----and a nod to that other trailblazer Bill Walton- happy trails to you big guy!
I would always come out to see Phil play anywhere anytime if i could. So last night was a treat to get another chance to do just that here in P-Town. Living in the moment which I did hanging on Phil's bass lines last night was worth the price of admission without a doubt. Precious moments..........
The Fire on the MOuntain was probably Phil's best showcase song last night, and the light show, and the band's interplay during the song was one for the ages. That was the magic that keeps us coming back after more years than I want to admit. Whatever else happened that night around the S>F didn't matter. That was the money.
I will chime in with the some of the sentiments expressed that at the beginning of Days Between I too felt a vaccum sucking the energy out of the coliseum--but by the end of the song I and others I could see were standing there with our jaws dropped. Truly it was a phenomenal reading.
Special call out to JK. That ain't easy man. I appreciate his being a learned student of the Phat Man. Geez he rocks! This band --all of the cast-- deserved nothing short of the standing ovation they got. And I -- of course, am Furthur converted.
I was sitting right behind the soundboard, and it sounded fantastic to me. I have really grown to love Bob's reading if days between. The vocals are sounding great all around.
My friend was on the floor telling someone about my finding my dad on the Philzone...a dude nearby overheard it and interjected "I read about that, that's just a hoax" my friend was like "no really, he's sitting right over there..."
Joan is absolutely the best vocalist to ever cover GD songs. Imagine, GD tunes being covered by someone who can actually sing.
Now to stir thing up, some more. Jerry brought tremendous emotion to what he sang. His ability to convey emotion given his vocal range is (or was) beyond impressive. This will probably be considered heresy, but to compare Jerry's natural vocal skills to Joan's? I believe that even Jerry (if he was able to) would defer.
Given Garcia only hoped to be remembered as a "competent" guitarist; I'm sure he'd agree with your assessment.
Jerry is heart and soul.
Now where did I put that black licorice?
Asked about peoples luv of the GD, Jerry once responded that the dead were like licorice. If you like licorice, you REALLY like it. Or something like that.
"we're like black licorice. not everyone likes black licorice, but those people who like it, REALLY like it"
Right Before the JK Equipment breakdown, I turned to my buddy and remarked about how JK doesn't sing on IKYR, and my take on it was that Phil & Bob had him sit out on the vocals on this one to remind US who's Boss.....then with JK's rig crapping out, my take was that it was Jerry reminding Phil & Bob who's boss! LOL...then JK, staring a pending trainwreck in the face, man's up and Delivers the most crippling shredfest of the night, reminding everyone in heaven and earth that there is a new sheriff in town and he's not going down without a fight!... I agree with my phriends above, Riveting, and Dramatic...as was the whole show...can't say enough about this lineup. They have finally got it right...15 years of fighting gravity and finally, in letting go, instead of falling to earth in defeat, they/we are now being catapulted to the furthust reaches of the universe!
We are Blessed!
This is going to be a big big summer. grate job to the boys for keeping this tour low-key and incident-free: can anyone remember the obligatory shitty press write up about drugs, crowds, etc.? Close out with a pic of pl in the sunshine to get us goin for some outdoor music from these boys soon!!!
good time last night. read my review of the show at my brand spanking new blog
http://www.lightsnoeyecansee.blogspot.com/
I like singers for different reasons. Joan is far more vocally talented than any of the GD members. I loved what she did with PLF and The Dead both. That said, there are Jerry songs and Pigpen songs and Bobby songs that those fellas just outright own. Just like the way Dylan wrote Watchtower but Hendrix stole it for all time.
For example:
Bob-Sugar Mag
Pig-Lovelight
Jer-WharfRatStellaBlueMorningDewBirdsongetc
Terry Woodburn (Twoodburn)
A C- setlist, a strong B+ show
I agree on this opinion. Fun show, but gosh darn wish it could have beena barn burner set list and playing since it was the only show up here.
(transposed from Other Stuff)
we had so much fun.
BOB ROCKS

and tour was AWESOME
thanks band thanks phil

Phil was so sweet at the donor rap.

I REALLY REALLY WANT TO BE AN ORGAN DONOR
but not any time soon.

Phil still be thumpin out the throughline.
What is not to love about these, our Days BETWEEN.....
with such fine friends I will enjoy the days thoroughly.

Phil, we thought about flipping u the bird in salute but we did not want it to be misconstrued. love you.

Picasso moon starts 10/16/89.
Picasso moon starts the show @ shoreline where they (GD) broke out train to cry. (91?)
all I know is that drive in mooooooovie
is quasi ridic but it all began when I walked into Bobby's byrne bday and said
WTF is THIS?!
(picasso moon)
and then the band blew my mind.
So Picasso means Oncoming Great Fun.
In my world.
If u do not like Days Btwn I cannot help u.
Perhaps u might want to look at the lyrics again.
They are outstanding.
Last night I did not well up with tears until almost the end.
Jerry Jerry Jerry. What would he think of this furthur? I have wiped away the creepy jk Jerry thing.....I enjoy this music.
But I still miss Jerry. Without him, none of this. No GD, no knowing phil, no other ones, no china cats.....
No days between.
We miss him - I do anyhow.
The song pays tribute and personally I think it is gorgeous.
And last nights was top of the chart.

If you are looking for bones with NO MEAT, check out Newark ;)
but actually the second set sirloin
is
BANG SCARLET
loveitloveit
hear that wah wah? THAT MEANS
FIRE
and then
BUCKET!??!!? oh it was absurdly perfect. I love crazy bucket. Now I will say it. It was so much FUN. that bucket was a great sauce to yr scarfire meat.
LA - oh dear MORE Bob. But okay. I like Fade too
(there are a lot of used to be Jerry songs tonight? eh?)
but now when LA is over Bob will not sing. RIGHT!??!?!
yes. Okay.....Ruben. I am skeptical.
But JK is hitting all the words (hard to do and often the stumbling block)
"she was dressed as Pirhouette in red"
and I was wearing my red Cassius Clay tshirt so I was about it.
we dance to Ruben....it is lighthearted after bangup bucket and sleazy fade.
DAYS IS prime choice cut - tender filet. for me.
but we have covered that.
Then I hear Masons. No it is Viola. Is Phil going to sing AT ALL? (guess not)
NO - HUCK - IT IS CHINA CAT.
oh, yeah, china cat. I love that.
but I run to the bathroom and am back for RIDER.
Miss Me
When I'm
GONE. GONNNNNNNE gone.
last night of tour. you know, now it is a little bittersweet. Whatever - play picasso moon, I don't care - I like the band PLAYING
don't stop tour.
It is more fun to sing rider imo - than chanting not fade as the night dims.
and a donor rap. A great one. Phil heartfelt. He is awesome.
(It is almost his birthday!!!!!!)
I was a little meh on the knockin.
kinda figured we'd get a double shot, but still ending tour with DYLAN is just weird to me. But Bob, you know BOB - he does those things.
and then Touch. #2 - this is really THE END.
Will get by
Will survive
Yes, we surely will try.
so there was more substance there than some sugaree>revoultion thing.
I mean really. thank god they did not play sugaree or shakedown st.
;)
all the one offs in the first set. FIRST BT WIND on a tour with like 140 songs!!! crazy. you all are crazy.
and of course because I am attending the Friday show, I know
Phil Will Sing and there will be greatness for San Fran.
Tis waiting on the horizon. We are walking towards it.
with birthday hats and balloons.
aroo.
I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to see Joan join the band for a few songs. Sure, the gender twist could be awkward, but she could nail R&C, Caution, and a few others. Her heart is capable of flowing within this music, and her skill is a great match.
"I have to say the set list was such a let down after listening to the band marching around the east coast and making strong statements in many venues"
You still did better then Newark, DE.
((((JOAN)))))
maybe she will give a test drive at the bday
Fake midi jerry.
Narrow tonal range JK. Not a new thought.
Like having a conversation with a picture of a dead person.
Far from hanging on the edge and playing new music.
If Jerry was alive he'd not be trying to copy himself from 20 years ago. He'd be doing something new.
Go listen to a tape or a cover band or something - just as good.
And if you want singers and not guitar players go watch american idol or a karaoke bar.
Forgot to mention that I felt slighted that Phil did not sing one in Portland. Whazzzup with Dat? I don't care if he is saving his voice for his Bday or not. I won't be there anyway and a little vocal expansion beyond Bob and JK would have been nice. C'mon Phil - I am beginning to think you don't like us here in P-town!
>>Fake midi jerry...... Not a new thought.<<
Sorry, but I have suffered through 15 years of "new thought - anything BUT Jerry" guitarists trying in vain to make this music mean something and go somewhere. If you want anything but Jerry, go see Phish or Panic, or moe., or any number of the myriad of "jam Bands" Riding these guys coat tails... there's plenty of "anything but Jerry" out there to Choose from...
The rest of us will do just fine leaving you behind, as we depart once again on the ship of the sun that is the Grateful Dead.
>>Forgot to mention that I felt slighted that Phil did not sing one in Portland.<<
Funny how spoiled we get.
It took me 4 years and about 20 GD shows before I got to see/hear Phil sing even once, and that was when he jumped onto Bob's mic for Why don't we do it in the road, 84 Greek. Don't think he had his own mic for another year.... now he skips singing lead for 1 show and we feel "slighted".
EXACTLY missingfinger... We already HAD several guitarists who sat in the slot. Every one of them well intentioned, but almost all held Garcia's tone and ideas at arm's length, due to respect or by order. For me, it was always enjoyable but not "it".
To attempt to denegrate what John K has spent countless hours learning and working as "fake midi" (as choreboy thoughtlessly charges) pretty well tells me that some "fans" haven't a clue about how hard it is to get to this level of musicianship. For someone to charge JK's playing as little more than some sad echo of the past, not only insults JK, but insults Bob, Phil, the band and basically anyone who studies, plays or listens to dead music for the love of it.
"If Jerry was alive he'd not be trying to copy himself from 20 years ago."
Bullshit. You're wrong again. Ask any Dead member. Jer operated largely on fumes of the past for several years.
So.... If not John K, just WHO else in the guitar world has worked harder to achieve "it", the tone, the daunting skill sets, the improvisational prowess in one package. John K's DNA is steeped in it. And it came from LOTS of hard work and study. Too bad that is lost on some of the lost sailors out there.
I do feel slighted when Phil doesn't sing. Been there right with yah with the Tom Thumbs at Nassau '85. But this isn't the DEAD - and Phil takes a more prominent roll at vocals. I thought I heard Unbroken Chain at the beginning and the end of Days Between. Phil could have stepped up to the plate. Did he not sing at any other venue this tour? Every one wants to be able to cheer a good phil reading of Frankin's or something. The man has great songs and don't forget this is the PHILzone and he is why I am still in it. I payed my $60 nothing wrong with a little criticism. Sheesh - they are not gods. We pay them to play and sing and meet some expectations. Phil singing one of his great songs is one of mine. I bet he sings on Friday
Hey, I'm right with ya PeakPhun.... notice how I said "we" feel slighted? I felt it too, but that feeling made me think how spoiled I've become.
Anyway, I know several heads that would pay $60 to KEEP Phil from singing! LOL... one man gathers....
I feel slighted by the entire NW nod this time 'round. Firstly: One MEASLY show for the entire West coast or at least the NW region. Second: Playing such a huge lame venue.. 13,000 seat basketball arena??? After seeing the small intimate venues played in the NE.. Third: For that one show we get an average show and setlist at best.... Much like the Gorge last year. A show without flow and strings of mindblowing music... I will ALWAYS be grateful but you have got feel feel our(my) frustration at what the band is showing out in their home turf of the upper west coast... After seeing the monumental 4 previous nights in Chicago and Denver, then seeing what they brought to Oregon was a major let down... Yes, I will be going to every other show they potentially bring out here but my frustration has to be recognized....
(Picasso Moon and Days Between are fine songs but NOT, I repeat NOT, throwdown songs that the single west coast show deserved...)
Yo Johnny 2 times---
Amen to that!!!
Yo Misingfinger--
did you go to the Tabor Pub for the other Furthur and Phriends show that you spoke of above? I could not get the babysitter for two nights in a row. but hey I tried! I could have used those floor tix.
I have high hopes and expectations of a late summer run of fun on the West Coast. Portland really lacks an indoor venue larger than 3000, but less than 10,000. Hell, I would have paid 25 bucks more for a ticket if they had done the Crystal IF I could have gotten in.
PS, I am not crazy about Picasso Moon, either, but it was the best performance of it I had ever heard. I still say, C- setlist, B+ or A- performance.
"Fake midi jerry.

Twood... great post on John. Basing this on this post right here... I don't believe people still really understand how good of a musician John is. Maybe he should whip out his violin on a Jack-A-Roe or something... whatever it takes for people to see beyond their "fake jerry drama"...
JohnJohn and NoPhun
Really? You think these folks owe you somehow? You feel slighted?
How about taking responsibility for your choices. If you don't enjoy it, why go? These guys are offering you something and it comes with a simple message:
Come with them or go alone, they've come to take their children home. Take it or leave it.
I am a proud "Jerry's kid" and I'm gonna keep ridin' the bus until the wheels fall off! Look, I don't always enjoy everything I hear from them, but I really don't understand why some folks want to sit around griping. Get off yer butt and go do something you love!
I do realize Portland lacks venues, But Seattle sure doesn't!! Seattle has indoor venues of every size... Eugene has a big theatre. Salem has an indoor armory hall. Vacouver, B.C. has MAny great venues. Spokane has theaters..
I'd love to see a summer Veneta show. ..and a Marymoor Park(Redmond, Wa.-a few miles east of downtown Seattle)..
I dunno.... Guess I'll have to check out the dozens of setlists, ONCE-A-FUCKING-GAAN, from the far NE of the nation...
yaaawn...
"Look, I don't always enjoy everything I hear from them, but I really don't understand why some folks want to sit around griping. Get off yer butt and go do something you love!"
You'll have to explain this to some of us, because we don't see the world so simply as this would imply.
Just a box of rain -

Believe it if you need it,
if you don't just pass it on
This thread reminds me of the community over at the Democratic Underground where god forbid you should criticize anything Obama does you get jumped on by the self righteous. Don't say anything critical or else. This is music and I miss the good old music critics.
Let Phil Sing!
Wheres the Portland post? Was anyone recording this thing? I have the entire tour so far. Need this one to complete the set. Nothing on archive or btetree yet. Waaasup??
PeakFun, yes I did hit the tabor.. and I recorded it (at least the first 2 acts, Ramblin Rose & Lost Creek w/ Kimock).... the place was packed! Hung w/ Zane Kesey & Simon & Eli Babbs.... smoked a joint on the bus.. Great fun for a Sunday night for sure!
Terry woodburn, great post!...
Thanks for taking my thoughts and presenting them in a FAR more eloquent way than I possibly could.
I have no problem being a critic or with constructive critics, it's the motivation behind the whole "Fake Jerry" rut some of these critics are stuck in that becomes highly suspect to me....
Furthur-
NW tapers are notoriously SLOW at getting recordings up online... That's one thing I love about the right coasties- they post shows the next morning... Over here we chill on'm for awhile....
"Smoked a joint on the bus"
Been a while since we been down on the Pleasant Hill Farm. I am sorry I missed the gang.
Now about this show, after subjecting my Instant Download of Portland to loops in my CD player I can happily say WOW- just WOW!
Yes, in RETROspect, I SUSpect this show will easily land itself at least among the top 10 of the tour, in spite of the setlist. Indeed, the setlists alone, and not the actual playing, of the top 5 shows are probably the only thing keeping Portland out of that club....
Yeah, I loved Phil's comment during the donor rap to the effect of, "typical, just when things are REALLY getting good, it's the end of the tour.."
But not for long.
Good show, shitty venue.
Got a free ticket, sat straight back upper bowl. Thought the sound was good. Song selection was decent, but no experinmenting or streching out.....just going thru the motions. I would have been bummed if I'd spent even $20......Not a bad time, just nothing extraordinary. I still listen to old shows at home and there is just too much good music in Portland. Just my opinion..........
Had a great time. Nice to find more of my old friends coming out all the time. The power built through this Chicago and Denver and this show then came to full blossom on Friday. Wow!
Were there a lot of tapers there? I can't find this anywhere.
Tapers section was pretty thin, but I know a friend who did record it... I'll put a bug in his ear to upload to archive.....
on a related note, I listened to the show SBD about 4 times thru now and I have come to the conclusion that Days Between was the best, highest energy song of the night....go figure!
I am a huge Reuben and Cherise fan and oddly enough I really like Picasso Moon too. I know a lot of people don't like that song. I would buy it from livedownloads.com but I have already bought 5 shows from the winter tour and its starting to hurt my wallet.
John K copies mistakes that jerry made.
>>John K copies mistakes that jerry made.<<
I love that.
Been listening to the soundboard...This is a great show! Like Utica, the setlist doesn't ring out, but the music is stellar, at times inter-stellar. The second set smokes. Jeff's work is, as usual, particularly amazing. Scarlet Fire burns. Ruben is sweet and the China-Rider is spectacular (Phil bombs). The Days Between is powerful, like the Philly 9/13/1993 one which arose after the dizzying Dark Star-Terrapin-Tubular-Bells jam. The women added much to the sound, esp. on Rider. Bob and JK were on fire! As much as I like Bill and Mickey and Mollo, the drums drove. Amazing. Don't miss this train!
Mama Tried! Just listening to the board, first one after seeing that great run from Chi > SF. Everyone's touched on the good stuff. Just finishing Peaceful Valley > jam > Passenger. These shows take you back and leave you wanting more. Can't wait for the next one.
