Amazing, having seen the sunday show at the Greek, all I can say is that the East Coasr spring swing unleshed a beautiful torrent of radical set lists, and I assume sets.
1969. 1969 would be the last time thought comparing Phil and Friends and the Dead would be unfair akin to saying the Sunday "Lovelight" was the best ever... The weighing of Phil and Friends is significant. It embodys a comeback of historic preportions. A great and beautiful success story. If Phil can keep above it, and keep his body straight relative to the reality of the new liver. There's
an organic chemisty that goes on their between sobriety, exercise, food and sleep. Phil needs to allow time to let that process occur....
that's a no foolin' around setlist there...sounds like set 2 may be one for the ages
good to be alive, isn't it?
Good lawd almighty! anyone wanting to contribute to the, "help free my soul and put me on tour NOW" fund. All donations accepted!
Wanting tapes in PDX smilinglorax@yahoo.com
BTW.. dedicatedmama U rule!
That second set was un-freaking-believable! During Blues for Allah, there were hints of a caution jam... phil was thundering.
phil rules!!!!!
Fuck me Dead!!!!
Red Rocks is a special place, I'm jelaous. Said it before, and will say it again PHIL IS THE MASTER.........by the way any review of Les? Was that David Bowie and good?
Ah,what a show! You must say Red Rocks really does bring out the magic! The first had a lot of high energy, the bird song set a nice tone.I was about 27-28 row stage right.Looking behind me during Bird song there were some birds dancing a cloud covered horizon.Beautiful!I love Red Rocks! The second set started a litllte slow i think, but really started to flow in terrapin.BLUES FOR ALLAH SMOKED.The comes a time was heart felt for sure. All in all it was a great show.I can't wait to see what instore for tonight. P.S.Lets try to clean up after our selfs and be responsable not to lose Red Rocks again. But still have a GOOD TIME.See you all tonight!!!HAVE FUUUUNNNN!!!!!!
Don't have time to write a long review, but all I can say is unbelievable!!!!! Best Phil show I have seen yet. Warren and Jimmie were on FIRE! They have really learned to compliment one another, letting one take the lead and run with it.
Highlights for me were Brown eyed, Night of a 1000 stars and Blues for Allah. The Terrapin and Eyes are great tunes but were not played at their finest. The jamming all night was awesome.
Can't wait for tonight. No way it can get any better.

To Thsea, I think Les Claypool played a great set. I think he was hoping for some more interaction from the crowd, but he dished it out nonetheless. VERY Psyechedelic. I mean, Tomorrow Never Knows with Les Claypool and Warren Haynes!? Sheesh! The "blast off" portion of Space Oddity seemed sort of humorously underplayed. The whole set was full of flavor. I know everyone's salvating for the Phil tapes, but I'm hoping that Les's set gets some circulation as well. It was a great experience!
A few thoughts. Never a fulltime member of the Dead community (seen 2 Dead shows only) but I'm a longtime music critic (for both Boulder papers and national rags) and mostly-sympathetic outsider, I came to this show quite uncertain of what to expect. Frankly, we were there to see Les CLaypool, but traffic and parking hassles got us inside to see only the last 25 minutes or so. I DID get the impression that Les didn't go over too well with the grinnin'-groove Dead longtimers, and that's a pity. He's one of the best musicians of his generation, intelligent and funny and massive chops...but, oh well. I thought he was great.
I've also been a Jimmy Herring fan since he tore up the stage with Colonel Bruce Hampton years ago, so I intended to stay to hear him - he was also excellent in JID. Warren I know, but I was not much a GM fan.
Interesting, of the people I talked to, almost none knew a thing about Jimmy, and seemed at best mildly puzzled by Les Claypool. Disappointed by that.
The band was outstanding, the first 40 minutes of the second set was absolutely stellar. I thought Jimmy and Warrebn had a nice give and take going in the first set, and I thought Warren kind of went to sleep a little during the second set. Phil seems quite poised as a bandleader. Band dynamics were excellent, even the missed cues out of jams into tunes were handled very gracefully. "Eyes" was fantastic.
I DO think this is a Dead experience, as close an approximation of the Dead's vibe and presence as is possible anymore, and while it's still immensely satisfying to hear, it's also a little troubling for me...frankly, I sensed a lot of people there to share in the vibe and for whom the music was secondary. Not so much a criticism as an observation.
By contrast, we saw Air at the Odgen a few nights earlier, everyone was there for the music. Some didn't like it and left, but the event was musical. A Phil show seems to have unmistakable tribal-gathering overtones, and personally speaking (as an outsider to it), I find that aspect of this experience to be a drag.
It would trouble me more if the band wasn't so good. Overall, we had a lot of fun, and please don't flame me too badly.
:)
Air is still playing? Holy crap -- who's playing drums? You'd be surprised at the numbers of deadheads who, in fact, are hip to the AACM, etc.
Still playing, Blueridge? They've only been around since about 1995 or so. (The French guys, Godin and Dunckel.) Who's AACM? Are we talking about the same people?
You two Airheads are not talking about the same people. The AACM Air was a Henry Threadgill led jazz ensemble. The French guys are electronic diddlers. Both are well worth hearing.
LOL, scott!
Then there's always Air Supply ...
LOL!
:^)
Amazing, having seen the sunday show at the Greek, all I can say is that the East Coasr spring swing unleshed a beautiful torrent of radical set lists, and I assume sets.
In fact. The light show...
Just dosent' happen...
Just dosen't happen in this day and age
Phenomenal
1969
Anyways, back to reality, the lightshows of course refer to the Maritime where the lights really happen...
One thing, if anyone was hanging behind the Greek in the party zone, in the parking lot behind the show, they'll understand that someone could die or worse (paralized) if they fell from that precepice. A guardrail would save the situation permanentlyThoughany randon drunk could fall to their stumbling death as it stands...
red rocks is the best place to see phil and co. rock out w/ kick ass set lists and a funcky sound that was unexpected...2nd set was incredible... the ravey beat to terrapin had me dancing like never before...phil and the boys must have been on the same trip I was b/c the songs just hit me tonight in a new way...thanks phil for a memorable night
