It is time to start this thread!
Larry Campbell will not be at this gig, as he had a prior committment to be performing with Levon Helm at moe.down in NY. We are pleased to have Ratdog's Mark Karan on Guitar.

MK sang sugaree
Update via cell phone call from TU in the Meadow..UJB and Franklin's Tower were played
Hi all,
A great afternoon in the City. Don't remember all the set, but sumthin' like Playin', Bertha, Little School Girl, Deal, China/Rider, a killer Sugaree (Mark & Jackie sang), Uncle John's, Help/Slip/Franklins, Sugar Mag. And a most appropriate Box of Rain encore. Fantastic day. Hopefully others took better notes.
Peace
Thanks Mike.
Wow, no updates. . .
The band sounded great! Short but sweet. Highlights were an incredible Help>Slip>Franklins, and a high energetic Sugar Magnolia.
Perfect weather, views and happy people groovin' by the San Francisco Bay. Couldn't ask for anything more.

Excellent show. Karan added a spacy, energetic component that's different from Campbell and he looked and sounded great. Phil seemed to be getting off heavily on Karan's playing.
Thanks for the upgrades, Rob!
And thanks for nudging me to the show with your thread about discounted tix. The day definitely beat a day at the Sausalito Art Festival.
Dan, sorry we did not get to meet. I am real glad you made it though! What a glorious day in SF, and Phil delivered the goods as usual. I can't recall the last time Phil played outdoors in the city of SF. What an amazing day!
Yay Phil!
I was trying to figure out that last outdoor SF phil too...definitely nothing in my memory banks I wouldn't mind doing it again though!
maybe Ross?
The last time Phil played outdoors in San Francisco was the Bill Graham Tribute at the Polo Fields in GG Park. 11/3/91...
Wow... I think the last tine before that would've had to be Lindley Meadows in GG Park. 9/28/75...
We need to get that boy outdoors more often! ;^)
It would be nice to see phil in the park with mickey at the hardly strictly bluegrass fest.
As for yesterday, absolutely one of the greatest days you could possibly ask for in San Francisco. Gorgeous weather with bright sunshine and a gentle breeze all day, the Golden Gate Bridge and SF Bay flanked to the right of the stage, great food vendors, and PLENTY of room and wiggle space for all.
This was the Bay Area at it's finest, and one of the more enjoyable crowds of people in a long time. Thanks to everyone who brought their A-game and kindness to this glorious day. When was the last time Phil played an outdoor show in the city of San Francisco? We need to do this again... Oh yeah, and I thought the show was rock solid. Phil & Friends, featuring Mark Karan from Ratdog on guitar and vocals, had filled in for Larry Campbell who had a prior commitment with Levon Helm at moe.down in NY; played a thundering 2 hour & 10 minute “one set” show. Phil’s new Ritter Bass looks bizarre, but sure sounds tasty. All 13 songs played were songs done by the Grateful Dead during their first ten years of 1965 to 1975. It was as if Phil was continuing upon themes from the recent Warfield run, paying homage to the early days of the Grateful Dead.
During the “Bertha,” we were treated to a funky parade of stilt people, characters, kids with flying streamers, etc… Mark Karan sang lead on a gritty version of “Deal,” and exchanged some scorching lead with Jackie Greene, who had a new red SG guitar. One of the set’s highpoints followed – a blistering “China > Rider,” that was as good as it gets. It was great to hear many “heads” belt out the line “you know the sun’s gonna shine in my backdoor someday,” as we glistened in the gorgeous sunshine, grass at our feet, the majestic view of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay to the right of the stage, and lots of smiling faces… Perfect was the word that so many people seemed to echo all day long. They were amplifier issues during for Mark & Phil the entire set, but the band did not let it take away from their mission. Mark led off singing lead on a rocking “Sugaree,” with Jackie finishing the last verse, and as is customary these days, this song will fry your synapses. “Uncle John’s Band,” was another great song choice for the day, and was a beautiful sing-a-long by the Bay moment. This lead into a really nice jam and onto the “Help > Slip > Franklin’s > Sugar Magnolia.” Everything Phil does has thought behind it and beginning and ending with a Weir tune may have been a nod to sleeping beauty and the upcoming October 13th core four reunion. A predictable, but enjoyable “Box” guided us home and it was off to the Food Tasting pavilion!
I think Rob summed it up nicely. I'll add they served us fresh fruit on the rail, which was very nice.Just a fabulous venue. A perfect day in the park for sure.
All I can add was that the show was amazing. Rock and Roll at its finest all the way through. I was in the reserved section so maybe 25 feet from stage. Phils sound was thunderous! Space bass sounds as cool as it looks. The Sugaree rocked sweetly, China>Rider was monstrous huge and slinky fat. Calypso UJB opening and The Help>Slip>Frank was epic as well. When they hit Sugar Mag the only crappy part was the realization that it was ending soon. Good, generous people around me. From Rose and her apron to the two different guys who fired me up (thanks gents)to the guy who generously took my extra beer when I realized I'd drunk plenty...the sun, the bridge, the food (including the best blue cheese chocolate truffle ever!) Good stuff all around. Thanks Phil, Thanks Friends!! Oh yeah and to the folks who want the organic garden on the white house lawn- rock it hard! Love the idea.
>>>I'll add they served us fresh fruit on the rail...
