Great show from Jackie, for whom Chico has become a regular stop over the years (he's been around here 4 times in the last year, and that doesn't include at least twice he sat in for entire Mother Hips shows). This town has been a hotbed for him almost from the start, with most of his crowd, up to now, being young and female (and that's a damn fine thing). However, the Phil affect is now being seen, as there was clearly a significant Deadhead element to the crowd that has never been seen before here.

One thing clear to all, Deadhead and Jackie acolyte alike, is that the band is jamming a lot. In previous trips the band hardly ever segued from one song to another, but at this show it was the rule more than exception. Plus there were many long jams within songs, including a nice UJB jam to end one song and a nice, hyperfast China Cat jam in another.

Didn't write down a setlist, but he played most of his obligatory tunes, with a healthy dose of the new album. In addition, there were several nuggets to make a Deadhead's heart swell, He did a nice Hollywood>Midnight Hour> Hollywood, a sweet Merle Haggard twofer with Workingman's Blues>Sing Me Back Home, and perhaps best of all, a weird but very cool arrangement of China Doll>Don't Let Me Down

Most of our friends who were with us are loyal, longtime Jackie fans, and they were all saying that they thought this was the best they had seen him play.

**NOTE**- I didn't take the photos, my good friend John did

Lastly, I'm alive and well, just simply not spending much time in the cyberworld these days, other than hunting down torrents to download. Hope this finds everyone well!

Nice review Buncombe, I saw him last night in Sacramento and it was the best show I ever saw by Jackie. Nice place, outside, small crowd, beautifull weather. He did a nice rusty nails into mingelwood. A jammy animal with the China Doll> don't let me down >mexican girl encore.

man, all the pictures recently (outside lands, slow food and now these). Jackie is more and more acting the look of a young dylan.
its kinda crazy.

Pretty sure that's nothing new...it's always been the comparison...

Acting the look of young Dylan?

I can't stand these comparisons--be they visual, musical, or any other type. Jackie doesn't look like Dylan (unless you're talking about his harmonica contraption) and sure as hell doesn't and can't play like young Dylan (circa 1962-1966). Dylan is an immortal and was already a massively important performer by the mid-1960s. Jackie has modest talents. That's it.

And as much as Dylan apparently idolized Woody Guthrie, he never would have been caught with a Woody doll on his amp stack, as Jackie does with the Garcia doll. The continued presence of that doll is just plain absurd.

and everytime someone makes the dylan comparison someone else counters with ^that^...Same as it ever was.

I think the Jerry doll is kinda cool. I mean they did make a stuffed doll of him so what do you expect. It's supposed to be funny. Jerry is everywhere right? If they made a Woody Guthrie doll I'd buy one :-O

That is a really cool little venue up there in Chico, and it's no surprise that Jackie is getting good reviews; all the playing with Phil and the pressures of that music and audience are going to make anyone better.

I'll bet a nickel that 20 years from now he'll be saying that his time with Phil was the best education he ever had.

easily one of the best-sounding rooms in Nor-Cal....plus all that fresh beer!!!!

^^Nice! Gotta check out the Brewery some day. . .

>>>Dylan apparently idolized Woody Guthrie, he never would have been caught with a Woody doll on his amp >>>

True, but there most definitely never was a Guthrie doll made, so who can tell? Dylan took the high road anyway - and went with Victoria's Secret (JGe just gets 15 year old girls to give him their panties).

Calypso,
if you do check out the brewery, holler and I'll join you. It's only 2 or so miles from my house. Just don't go on a Monday, because the pub/restaurant is closed

>>>Dylan apparently idolized Woody Guthrie, he never would have been caught with a Woody doll on his amp

doesn't he have his Oscar on his amp these days?

Thanks Buncombe! I certainly will give you a shout, man.

I *may* be heading that way for the Nelson Harvest run. . . Are you thinking about any of those?

It's just me, and I might change my mind after seeing them next month, but Jackie just has never had the pipes to pull it off. He's not quite as adenoidal as Chris Robinson, and he remembers most of the words, but that's about the best I can say of his vocal abilities.

Likely not, unless he actually comes to town here. I've pretty much spent my concert/travel budget for the rest of the year on Neil in Reno, MMJ this Friday @ the Greek, Bridge School, two nights of DBT/Hold Steady @ the Fillmore, Crowes at the Fillmore, and Hardly Strictly
