Let's get it on! See some of you phreaks there~
If you see someone there 2nite who looks like a cross between Steven Spielberg & Phil Bronstein (of SF Chronicle) go up to him and say "Hi Winnie".
Yesterday I had "Shakedown" in my head all day and wasn't surprised they played it last night. Today I have "Stranger" in my head. Could we see that tonight? Probably more Bobby songs tonight anyway, for better or worse...
I'll be there with my top hat on (see profile pic).
P.S. You can stand right out back of the joint and hear everything perfectly through the open patio doors. Was a crowd last night dancing in the parking lot...
The best part about what we could hear tonight is that there are no limits!
Cool Doobs- I'll say hi!
Good news about the parking lot if I get shut out of other rehearsals!
An early ask, but anybody hear what time Friday night's soundcheck is gonna start?
>>P.S. You can stand right out back of the joint and hear everything perfectly through the open patio doors. Was a crowd last night dancing in the parking lot...
i'm all for free fun but would not promote the parking lot hang out; as outside crowds get too big we will lose these venues for these special treats...
I agree with Bret.
My main issue with this venue is that it is set up for troubles with those who simply won't follow the rules and will show up even if they don't have a ticket.
It's pretty simple; if you don't have a ticket DON'T COME NEAR THE PLACE! Even if you live 10 minutes away.
For the greater good.
I agree...I mean the band specifically asked for this. They really want to do these intimate sessions and you know if it happens they won't let them do it anymore.
Furthur Site states:
We ask that you please respect our wishes and do not come if you do not have a ticket.
There will be absolutely NO tickets available at the door.
There is absolutely no vending or overnight parking and security will not allow
loitering anywhere near the venue. We'd like very much to be able to do these types
of small events in the future and we ask your help in allowing us to do so.
Your cooperation is greatly appreciated!
I don't think that is too unreasonable, out of respect for our favorite musicians!
For the greater good? Bullshit, you mean for the elitist's good. Privileged folks always want the riff-raff to stay away so they can maintain their privilege. Fuck that shit! Eat the rich!!!
>>>security will not allow
loitering anywhere near the venue
Last night's report, as has happened before, shows this is just another idle bluff. If they really wanted others to stay away, that wouldn't allow these exceptions, which just encourages what they say they don't want.
It's not elitist....I mean come on the tickets were only $30....and they are not gonna send the National Guard in...it's not about that nor being rich. It's about respecting the fact that they want to do this again.
While they don't respect those of us who don't have time to play their petty games? Respect always has to go both ways...
According to an e-mail I received from organizers, Friday soundcheck will start at 9pm, but is "subject to change."
Cool Rob thanks for heads up man! Have fun tonight!
Keep thinking the man is out to get you, and that the band has an evil conspiracy waiting to get us and rob our souls....but I send you good kind vibes~~~
Gadfly, could you clarify what "petty games" you are talking about?
>>>While they don't respect those of us who don't have time to play their petty games<<<
You don't have time to check a web site at a very well known regular time to see if they've announced more rehearsals? Do you expect them to send you a personal email?
You don't have time to get a ticket to their very fairly priced three day, 3 set festival show? You didn't have time to get a ticket, also fairly priced, to the 6+ hour marathon show for Phil's birthday? Or the 3 set NYE show?
You won't have time to get a ticket to the many other regular shows they have done & will do?
You must be VERY busy.
>>>Respect always has to go both ways<<<
That sounds allot like the old hippy adage, "What's mine is yours and what's yours is mine, but I don't have anything so gimmegimmegimme."
Either way, whining about how others don't take proper care of you belongs in Other Stuff, not Reviews.
Now, since I'm elitist scum, I'M leaving for San Rafael now, since I DID have the time, along with some immense luck for which I'm very grateful, to take care of myself.
Rob
Thanks for the Friday Start time.
Lance, that is such a sweet slow burn,
"the wise men will speak wisdom to the fool,
and the fool will not recognize it"
yes indeed, headed to the Palm
Lance is my new hero and I'm not even going.
I basically agree w Lance too. I live a 10 minute walk away, wouldn't mind catching the show, but not going to go over and beg or walk around w my finger in the air. I'll try for the next run, maybe I get in, maybe not...I saw Jerry over 300 times, so I'm content...
>>>I saw Jerry over 300 times, so I'm content...
Grate Bass is Lesh Philling but (((((JerryMeister)))) get you HIGH...and Stay HIGH
Thank you Jerry.
Have fun tonight all you Bay Aryan Marin Yuppie Fucks Thx for the setlists too!
xxo to Phil & Bobby!
anybody reporting setlist?
"You don't have time to check a web site at a very well known regular time to see if they've announced more rehearsals? Do you expect them to send you a personal email? "
What's the time? It seems to me that the furthurmore Fridays are randomly posted. The site didn't even seem to announce these shows until well after they were sold out. At least everytime I logged on, it was still last week's. I only got on the ticket site because some kynd person here posted the link.
Usually it's around 10am pacific...but not everytime. I've also seen it posted @ 12pm pst. On fridays
After midnight
Not to start anything, but I agree ^^^. I've tried everything to get in and haven't never made despite rediculous hours sitting at my pc "trying" to get just one. Anyway, wish I knew the "time" people are saying, cause I'm on the site first thing every day.
Well, regardless, I too am less than 10 minutes away, do not have a ticket and am not going to hang in the lot although I've been sorely tempted.
Thank you much for the setlists and the reviews. And, I hope you all have a fabulous night. Peace!

Hey Canyon... I always go by the Golden Rule of long ago... I was told this by an old-schooler at Red Rocks in 1978 as I was looking for an extra ticket and was starting to panic...
This guy walks up to me and says, "you know the Golden Rule right? Everyone in there is suppose to be there... Stay positive and you'll be in there too..."
I did and I found my ticket.

Now all you favorite Marin elitist friends of mine...LOL..wink wink...please come for some more fun tomorrow night at the Masonic. Great Dylan/Dead night with lots of great musicians!! Over and out....
Band was seriously firing on 8 cylinders...
From the get go JK, Weir and Lesh were hitting it hard... not mention Jeff and Joe - especially JOE God damn that guy kills...
Especially killer St Stephen> Eleven >Unbroken with an off the hook Mr. Fantasy.
It was all pretty smoking but I thought the Days Between - as heartfelt as Bobby delivered it, was a pretty off putting choice for the first few verses till it found a groove. The only other slightly odd moment was the conclusion of Smokestack which was a psychedlic and satisfying transition out of Truckin' with a good jam but wound down without much of an exclamation point after about 3 mins.
The Ripple was sweeet (even though Weir biffed on the lyric midway through)....
The Sound was amazing and Phil Lesh, in that small room once again playing the MODULUS sounded incredible!!! That's the right tone for sure!
>Encore: Ripple (bw)
Actually it was JK and Bobby trading the lyrics, but JK sang most of it.
Well, guess I should've made my one rehearsal show this week the Tuesday one -- Aw, shucks!! That's one kickass "rehearsal" setlist!!
THAT was amazing... Just got home. WOW... How can we call that a "rehearsal?".

Pretty crazy saw a photo of the stage had to be sorta surreal seeing them guys play at that place
Much different show than last night; tonight had some real-deal extended playing, but Alex, last night was just fine too.
There was some trippy shit going down tonight; no Bobby pulling the band out of THESE jams, the Playin' went on & on, and it was REALLY trippy, with a beautiful transition into a real fine Eyes, which is a song I'm a bit tired of, especially with Phil singing, but I had NO issue with tonight's version. For me those two songs were the highlight of the show, along with a SNAPPY version of St. Stephen. No one could complain about Bob slowing things down there, that song's pace was JUMPING! In fact, I thought the pace of just about everything the past two nights was right where it should be. No Bob bashing to be found here.
GREAT relaxed yet adventurous psychedelic jamming, no rushing, no overt "weight" to it. So many times tonight I was able to lock into Russo, Weir & Phil just winding around each other, and then JK would weave in, again with such creative and subtle ideas, and we’d be off.
Even the Days Between was excellent (between Bob's vocals, which are still Bob's vocals on Days; so OK, a little Bob bashing there) but especially the jam out of it was very strong. Everything had real extended exploratory jamming, and I loved the seamless transition back into Truckin' from Smokestack; that Smokestack jam could have gone longer, but I think they were ready to pull it back in, and Phil just effortlessly locked us all back into Truckin’ like the master he is. It was great.
Russo really is something else in this band. That guy is not just big-league, he's a clean-up hitter on a World Series team.
Once again I'll say the room has no real ambiance; I'd have my eyes closed for five minutes and I'd feel like I was on the floor at Winterland, then I'd open my eyes and I'd start looking for the chicken marsala & rice pilaf table. Compared to Mill Valley the neighborhood has no atmosphere at all, the room itself is sort of tacky & the overall setup is not really conducive to our type of fun, but the sound is REAL good and they don't pack the place, so after these two excellent shows I'd have to say that while it's not a favorite, the place is growing on me.
I like this band overall very much, but these small gigs are really crazy good. Generally speaking I’m not much of a dancin’ man, but these past two shows have gotten me going pretty good. And it was even better with so many great people around me.
Like last night I'll say again, ANYONE who has ever liked the Grateful Dead would have had a FINE time tonight.
KEEP THESE SHOWS COMING!!!
I was pretty happy about it myself.
Thanks for the reviews, sounds like a great show. Let the party begin!!!!!
Another outstanding show!!! And I have to agree 100% about Joe Russo. He was a monster last night! He really is winning me over in a big way :-)
I actually like the vibe at The Palm quite a bit; true, it's a plain old banquet function room, but the sound is surprisingly good.
See you this weekend :-)
thought the band was really stretching the improvisational side of things last night and felt infusion of jazz intertwined into some of the long jams.
Venue is as Lance describes it, San Rafael is no MV but being 7 minutes from home is a bonus...
and about San Rafael....you just gotta poke around.
Killer f@#$king show!Great songlist and playing! Eyes of The World is where it kicked in for me. GREAT Dear Mr. Fantasy, best Days Between since Garcia,ON THE ROAD AGAIN!RIPPLE ENCORE!It was great hanging with you Lance and Rob,thanks for the poster Canyon. Hi Ritchie and Arthur!Love Eddieboy!
Must be nice to see the band in such small quarters !!!
some day sigh..........
Lance...your review really nailed many thoughts I had about the set and this comment cracked me up:
> then I'd open my eyes and I'd start looking for the chicken marsala & rice pilaf table
My wedding did, in fact, feature that exact menu!!!
Days Between PJ has not been my favorite, but the second half last night was incredibly powerful. My eyes even welled up as Bobby sang, "Gave the best we had to give..."
I thought John really took charge a number of times last night...loved this one extended vamp he riffed on as the band was clearly turning a corner into a new song (might have even been into Days?).
Have fun with the frogs if you're going!
Thanks for all the great reveiws. Were there any tapers there for all of us that couldn't join in on the fun??!!!
Taping looked to be about the same as the other small shows; I didn't see anyone taping, but that doesn't mean someone didn't.
The band once again had mikes set up, who knows if any will get out.
I heard tapimg was allowed Lance, and my friend knows someone who taped. I hope he is right,Bruce!
The Fantasy was the highlight, along with a strong Playin and a surprise almost set ending On the Road.
John had a very powerful solo on Fantasy and Chimenti's solo was a great one as well, and then John came on at the end of it and started to solo on top of it--their interplay at the end of Fantasy was easily the high point of the night as the crowd erupted in appreciation. It's one of the best moments I've witnessed with these guys.
More please

I can confirm that statement -- shakedown heathen had me laughing
nice review - said it well
russo very focused, locked, tasty and powerful
1st night bonding for the band
2nd night Knowing that they CAN jam
no ambiance but very nice vibe
great lobster special for us elitists
not oversold at all - guessing 220 folk
i suspect a break even dealio
this portends a GREAT weekend folks
so lucky
Thank You
I'm glad I could provide you with a chuckle Joel.
fuck. nice reviews.
anyone hear anything about tapers possibly streaming this weekend's gigs? i can't go, but as i made a thread about, i'd love to be there and participate anyway!
thx for any word to the big bird.
word.
I Love This Band!!!
maybe this is a stupid question, or maybe it's been covered.
but Phil played his modulus the entire time, right?
he's done with the Ritter, correct?
yes the Ritters (there were 2 for the record) have been retired.
gracias..
did you have a preference over the glossy, or matte? lol
definitely the matte, glossy was too flashy I liked the Ritters but they just don't have the punch the Modulus' has. I do think its cool that Phil is still experimenting and trying different guitars.
for sure, I completely agree.
can't stop trying to change things up, but glad he went back, lol
I have almost always found the Modulus to be a bit muddy in bigger rooms, but in these bandbox shows it sounds REAL good.
I did like the Ritter; I understood the complaints but I liked how precise it was and how clean & sharp the notes came through.
"Once again I'll say the room has no real ambiance; I'd have my eyes closed for five minutes and I'd feel like I was on the floor at Winterland, then I'd open my eyes and I'd start looking for the chicken marsala & rice pilaf table. "
It's a banquet room...not a ballroom. No ambiance, none... ziltch. Certainly not the Throckmorton by any stretch. And the sound wasn't all that good even with that Meyers system they were using...The ceiling had a lot to do with that.
But they had parking.
the place looked very small on you tube
