Weird that JK didnt sing Lazy River Rd. his version in the phil b-day opening set is pristine.
Ugly guy? (Pl, bw) - new hunter song reportedly
During the festival, JK wandered into a friend's booth. His old lady says: "John, I hate it when Bobby or Phil sing the Jerry songs; I think you should sing all of them!" JK diplomatically replies: "I love it when those guys sing those songs!"
I agree spencer jones with the Lazy River Road comment & JK singing it on Phil's b-day. Amazing. And it was the 2nd song that night and the only song he sang that night. But I do love Phil doing it also. Bobby....not a big fan of his version.

Strong sound and playing. I was in & out with my focus, but Brown Eyed Woman, Magnolia Mountain, El Paso were all just fine, and there was a jam or two in there, maybe in the Bob tune or coming out of Come Together, that was excellent as well.
For me this show was all about the China/Rider. It just took the roof off the place and was worth $33 about five times over. I'd pay $33 to hear them play that China/Rider every day for a week.
Fractured feel overall, much like the first two Throckmorton shows in January, but really good playing throughout, especially by Phil tonight; RUMBLING, DRIVING, BOOMING! Still, overall neither show this week is close to the two scorchers last week.
I enjoyed the show but a friend thought it was all too mid-tempo and she was "searching for the sound" until the China/Rider. Then she was very happy.
Great way to spend a Wednesday night. This is a dance band.
One more tomorrow.
thanks PFS!

that's a final.
These past two shows have had a definative lack of energy compared to the shows last weekend. I guess that should be expected as I'm still tired myself.
I've always found it interesting that Marin doesn't have a first class venue and the Palm can hardly be considered first class. The venue, while intimate, is just a restuarant banquet room, hardly a ballroom. I hope that they move back to the Throckmorton which was so such better, both aestheticly and soundwise; than the Palm.
Good points Pete, I love the Throck. I think the draw to the Palm was to be away from the chaos that became major network news in downtown Mill Valley. It must be tough for the band to make these decisions.

I agree, seemed like Phil was in fine form and really enjoying himself. John hung out in the crowd chatting before the show...and the individual songs were good on their own but it did feel a bit fractured. i got the feeling they're still recovering a bit from the weekend. Still, i have no complaints--they were great, fractured or not, and what a fun way to see the band.
The Palm is growing on me. While the Throck has everything going for it (stage, lights, sound) and the Masonic is absurdly small, something about the ease of use at the Palm makes it super nice. I especially like the fact that you can stand outside on the porch and still have great sound and view of the show. Nice happy hour at the Peddler next door too.
All these rehearsals have been an incredible experience and I am so grateful to the band for making it happen. I'll see you there tonight.
remember guys..."rehearsal sessions" not really regular shows...so fractured is what your gonna get
i dont get why some folks are over analyzing what is billed as a "rehearsal"??
relax, enjoy and appreciate that you could actually attend these events!
personally, i would be bummed if the rehearsals were actually better than what they bring for a full crowd. yes i get that a show is a show wether it is a rehearsal (as long as they are allowing spectators) or a normal show on tour, and i would love to be there among 200-300 heads to soak it all in. that being said, i think that i would realize that it is what it is and i would not expect perfection...
thanks to those who post the set lists!!
cant wait for Herkimer and Mann Music Center shows!!!!
Last night was definitely a rehearsal where last Tuesday felt like a show. I'm torn between being glad they played material that I haven't heard 1000 times and wanting to hear their more classic and in my opinion, better material. My favorite in the former category last night was Magnolia Mountain. Just beautiful and JK sang it with the passion that song deserves. In the classic category, China Cat was ripping and did bring the house down. Great leads out of Come Together by JK as well. Didn't sound like Jerry leads at all and that is a good thing.
Oh, Tons of Steal was a wreck. They all took a verse and non of them could sing it. Bad key or something for anyone but Brent or maybe Warren. Even JK was struggling and Bobby was way out of his league, although he had problems singing all night were last Tuesday he sounded great.
A set list correction- JK sang on Lazy River Road as well.
Have fun tonight and I guess the next show for me will be Outside Lands!
thanks jahk2, pfs, & mjtorte!

that's a final. maybe!
Hey Rob, are you in tonight?
You said something to me the other night that was really nice, and I made a joke out of it, which is usually what I do (no comment on the quality of the jokes), but in case I don't see you soon, that was a very cool & kind thing to say. You're A-OK in my book.
Shit, do I have to drag my ass all the way to Marin AGAIN tonight? Oh well, sacrifices have to be made I guess.
Lisa said it was meh, just alright. I'd like to see us stop with the initials after each song, this is a band now, one unit and all that. I dont know, it just seems silly to me. I understand its helpful in a setting with a lot of guests and one-off type situations and whatnot. Just my opine, keep on rockin' Furthur.
>>>i would be bummed if the rehearsals were actually better than what they bring for a full crowd<<<
In many real ways they ARE better, and not just because of the intimacy.
These shows are just so different than what is ingrained in our Grateful Dead DNA that it's a challenge at times to not stay in our pre-conceived expectation mode. These little one set SHOWS are pure, completely unique and wide open; there is absolutely NO WAY to know what they're going to do next. They could take off into a 20 minute Playin' space or drop right into Corrina, and the intimacy (and brilliant playing) allows for it all to work. They force you to let go, LISTEN and drop away from the script.
As for the venue, it's not like the place sucks, it's comfortable and super easy to deal with, and as long as they keep the number of folks inside where it's been it's really fine overall.
There's no beating the Throckmorton IMO, but I think the group is connected to the guy who runs Murphy Productions, and the Palm is his/their place now, so that's probably where most of these will continue to happen.
IF we're supremely lucky enough for them to continue to happen.
If the crowd of people hanging outside the back continues to grow that could cause a problem. Twice as many out there last night; it will become an issue if it gets much more.
Please stay away if you don't have a ticket.
Elitists only.
>>>>> Nice happy hour at the Peddler next door too.
What beers do they have on tap? Trying to figure out where to hang out before the show.
Lance, I am in tonight. Let's chat, I can clarify something for us.
"Tons was a wreck"
Murphy's sure outdone himself to pick this stretch of track
I can only hope my luck is riding in the back
Well I have prayed to God
This ain't the day we meet
I've done about everything
But try dragging my feet
Oo, oo, I wanna go down slow
Oo, oo, oo, oo, oo
Nine hundred thousand tons of steel
Out of control
She's more a roller coaster than the train I used to know
