only ONE set???
otherwise looks sweet.
thanks for the updates.
....what did you expect on a co bill with the ABB?
Sless is in for 5 shows.
Was there a crowd during Phil's set?
Phil was very good.
The Allman's were unbelievable. Warren and Derek gave a clinic, the Other One jam said it all. I finally heard what I remember loving about a great "Q" set, but it happened during the Allmans' set.
Allmans were great, I guess, but I was kinda blown away by the intensity of Phil's set to be able to really appreciate ABB. Yes, Kind Hearted Woman had that TOO jam (which seems to be what generally happens in the middle of that song), and the Mountain jam > Dazed > Mountain was way cool. But the Allmans played about 6 more slide solos than I care to hear in a night. And, Phil's "from a dead stop" TOO was freakin' unbelievable. Actually, most of the set was incredible! The New Speedway sizzled, and there wasn't much breathing space until show's end. Great jams... Barry cooked, and Jackie had some great jams, e.g. second Eyes jam which he took instead of Larry. Also, best Throwing Stones I've heard live since 1990 or so. Great, great set. A full 2 hours, btw.
I was on the lawn and couldn't take the rain, so I missed ABB entirely, but Phil's set was awesome. Stephen/11/Eyes was brilliant, with Molitz shining in 11 and Sless just making the Eyes soar. When they launched 11, I thought "OK, it can rain and I'll still be satisfied." Nature obliged later, and I was still satisfied when we split.
I was surprised to see Larry playing a hollow Gibson the whole show. I'm so used to seeing him play that busted looking strat. But when the pedal breaks came it made sense to me, since the Gibson allowed him to get an extra jangle that really blended with the steel beautifully.
Fun show - started with some bizarre tempo changes early during New Speedway and peaked with a real nice re-interpretation of Cassidy and a ripping TOO - never really settled in to a groove but was always happy with where things went - shy of Throwing Stones, a very well played set.
Left before ABB and then hit some of the worst rain I have ever driven in on my way back to Jersey.
"Phil was very good.
The Allman's were unbelievable. "
Maybe that's why Phil Lesh & Friends are the opening act on this tour.
>>>Maybe that's why Phil Lesh & Friends are the opening act on this tour.
Not true, they are alternating opening slots...
Is Sless going to play Nokia?
"shy of Throwing Stones, a very well played set"
Agree that Jackie couldn't seem to figure out the cadence of the lyrics there. Not re-interpreting, just fumbling. Plus he doesn't have the raw charisma that Bobby used to draw from when he raged on that tune in the late 80s. But still I was glad to see the song reappear in the rotation (presumably for the election year).
For those interested, here is The ABB's set from last night which was killer.

One Way Out
Yea, they're alternating.
5th row center in front of Jackie, sound was very harsh during Phil's set up to The 11, it got a little better after that although the bass never got the fullnes it should have. Robbie Taylor was on stage a lot during Phil's set and there were a few times when Phil did not look happy about the sound. Jackie played a billion guitars, changed almost every song, including a cool 12 string Dan Electro, but his sound is way to harsh and edgy, he needs to smooth it out. Barry was hard to hear most of the set and often did the best leads. Molo appeared to be having a great time, and you could hear Molitz ok but he still never plays anything that makes me stand up and shout. Song selection was nice but if I never hear Throwing Stones again it'll be too soon. Also, no lead break in Cassidy, nice jam (modeled completely on the modal changes that the GD did with it from the mid 80's onward) but strange not to hear a lead before the last verse, especially because the had a head of steam up at that point. Till The Morning Comes was a high point as well, also Greatest Story which was also done pretty much text book from the Dead version.
Sound for the Allman's was miles away better from the same spot, and without a doubt the guitar work was just in another dimension with those two, period. Jackie is just not in that league and it shows. By the middle of Les Brers In A Minor it was all golden, totally locked in. Like I stated earlier, I got from the Allman's set (as did my brother) what we used to go to "Q" shows for; intricate and intense guitar work with a hard but smooth tone and a guy playing (Warren) that leaves it all on the stage. I love Phil, but it wasn't even close last night to me. Yea, the standing start Other One was nice but I thought that the OO jam done later in the Allman's set had better intensity from the guitars especially and it even occurred to me that they were taking a fun dig at Phil with it, a little musical gamemanship going on. You don't do a guys song, that he's just done in a set right before you, without making sure that you do it as well if not better.
Anyway, a great night in a wonderful venue that I've loved for decades. Saw a few really old friends and heard some great music.
Personally, I much prefer the guitar work from Phil's outfit. As much as I love them as players , all those slide solos by Warren and Derek give me a headache after a while. I thought Jackie played as well as I've ever seen him.
imo, this was easily the best of the 4 Phil shows I've seen in 2008.
PS I thought Throwing Stones was great and Jackie sang it very well. I'd rather see Jackie do Bobby songs than Bobby do Bobby songs.
Great show...Haven't hear P & F since the Q. really enjoyed it...
P & F plus ABB always a grand evening...if only Duane and Jerry...well, you know.
I heard that PLF is closing two shows so if you call that alternating. I also heard that the crowd was sparse for Phil's set the weather factoring in no doubt but that is par for the course when the opening act comes on at 6. The set list looks fantastic but like many shows it doesn't begin to tell the story.
Interesting that they're playing a lot of Bob Weir and Ryan Adams songs latey. Especially when you have as gifted a songwriter as Jackie Greene in your band.
I'm sure as they go on there will be some fine jamming between the two bands.
Hope the bands intermingle a bit soon...
A really great show by both bands. The sound was great from the center just outside the shed, about 30 feet up on the lawn from the sidewalk. Jackie played with a lot more confidence and color than previous tours and the band just cooked all the way through. Tremendous setlist. The show reminded me of another one-set epic, my first Dead show 10/9/76 at Oakland Coliseum, which packed a ton of great music into one set. It also seemed like both bands were warming up for Penn State. Spent the rainy set break under our tarp and stayed dry. Derek and Warren showed that it's not your grandfathers' Allman Brothers. Gregg's voice was clear as a bell. And Ron Holloway rules. Incredible sax.
Highlights:
Phil:
Speedway - -rockin' hard and political
St. Stephen
Other One (the second-best version of the night!)
Allman Bros:
The Weight -- sick sick, great jamout
Dreams
Other One -- yay Ron!
Dazed and Confused - A Warren Haynes masterwork.
Just a historical note, 10/9/76 was a two set show but the second set is the one that stands out in people's memories:
10/9/76 - Saturday
The Promised Land : Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo : Cassidy : Tennessee Jed : Looks Like Rain : They Love Each Other : New Minglewood Blues : Scarlet Begonias : Lazy Lightnin' : Supplication : Sugaree
Saint Stephen > Not Fade Away > Saint Stephen > Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Drums > Samson And Delilah > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower > One More Saturday Night
U.S. Blues
Also, Phil did a tremendous Eyes of the World last night, one of the highlights of his set.
>>I heard that PLF is closing two shows so if you call that alternating.
they are only playing four shows together, so why wouldn't you call that alternating??
Really both are the same. Phil played almost two hours last night and its a one set deal each time anyways. Plus, last night showed that he is not afraid to drop a second set as an opener band, so that takes away that concern as well. The music is intense either way..
Doh! (On 10/9/76). That was a hell of a second set. Let's try some of those Spring '69 shows then (4/27/69). They were good single sets.
I also find it interesting that the Dead did play a lot of second-billing sets back in the day, for Jefferson Airplane, for example, and have alternated openings with bands like The Who. Watkins Glen was Grateful Dead first with two sets, then The Band, then the Allman Brothers.
Phil opened for Dylan on his first East coast tour, but it was remarkable that the next summer they took turns.
I dunno - the Allmans did nothing for me. WAY too much screeching slide guitar, WAY too little melody, songsmanship (to coin a word), emotion, meaning. The Weight was a disaster. Yeah Warren belted and screeched for all he was worth (which is a lot), but whatever it was he played, it just wasn't "The Weight" to me. I thought Phil and Friends were in fine form.. Several tunes I hadn't seen much (or ever), great vibe, solid energy. Just so-so sound down in front.
Looking fwd to State College and one weekend at the Nokia!
anyone know who is on first at the birmingham show on 10/7 ?

Till The Morning Comes is one of my favs. This one sounds like hell. From the sounds of theshow, Phil and his band is still practicing and need much much more.
Im missing Barracco.
>>>>>>You don't do a guys song, that he's just done in a set right before you, without making sure that you do it as well if not better.>>>
Agreed.
At GOTV Billy did a Scarlet then Phil let loose a 2nd set (opener) Scarlet.
Black Crowes played a Cold Rain (pretty hot,IMO) the night before and Phil ended the 1st set with the same.
"I'd rather see Jackie do Bobby songs than Bobby do Bobby songs."
Today's Bobby? I agree. Jackie has much more spark. (And mind, I still enjoy going to see Ratbob shows and admire Bobby as a musician overall) I guess I just have the old farts habit of comparing to the days to yore. (said with a loving smile to all the other OFs out there)
"Im missing Barracco."
And Warren. And Jimmy.
This band hasn't improved at all in the year that they've been together despite bringing in an additional singer to round out the vocals and Barry on pedal steel. The show I saw a year ago at Camden was better then the set I saw at Merriweather.
that's cause DC is uptight and lame. ^ ser. Lots of type A
>>>>>>You don't do a guys song, that he's just done in a set right before you, without making sure that you do it as well if not better.>>>
))))Agreed. At GOTV Billy did a Scarlet then Phil let loose a 2nd set (opener) Scarlet.

Those two examples are not really the same as the original point of view that Tom pointed out earlier. Phil (who wrote "The Other One" with The Dead) played it first, then The ABB he felt out did Phil's version later on in the same show in the same night. A little different I think. Anyway, its very tough for anyone to beat The Brother's when they are on their game. As a few poited out here, Derek and Warren will part the skies with their guitar skills. Their dexterity, chemistry and overall music knowledge is unsurpassed. The "Q" with Warren and Jimmy gave us lots of the same. While Larry might be in their league, Jackie simply is not, which is not a knock - he is not known for being a guitar slinger. Remember, this lineup of The ABB has been in tact for 8 year snow - a lot longer than Phil's band. Chemistry means everything when you play music at such a very high level.
What Eddie said.
And just to be clear, I don't think for a moment that the ABB was trying to one up Phil or anything like that, more of an inside joke amongst friends. Derek certainly had a sly grin on his face looking at Warren when they first stated the OO riff.
And Oteil didn't do the riff as well as Phil, I will admit that.
