It's been pretty cool experiencing the affordable outdoor venues central VA has to offer. Those free and $2 shows at Brown's Island were pretty neat but the $20 and $30 Groovin in the Garden series at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens may be even better.

Arlo Guthrie will be there next week. The Dap kings, Mason Jennings and more decent acts have already played there this season.

Luckily, Yesterday was a beautiful evening for an early show. Sunny and, surprisingly, not that humid with a great sunset and thin moon on the rise, it was a real treat to see ZPZ's newest incarnation in such a pleasant setting.

Finally with a new keyboardist that while not quite as impressive as the last guy, adds some nice textures both on keys and occasionally vocals and violin. I figured with an opening band and $20 ticket they would phone in a pretty short set, but they did their full on 2.5 hour deal.

I love how the song selections continues to change, the last couple times I've seen them my favorite parts are never what I would have expected if I had just seen the set-list and not been there.

The second half was especially juicy, my favorite parts being a hilarious and precisely executed "pick me I'm clean">"Little House I used to live in", Keep it Greasy (which has gone from being really entertaining to a full scale powerhouse of a set closer) and "Yo Mama" which was some of the best music I've seen the band achieve yet.

Do yourself a favor and see these guys if you can!

"Blue Light" was really good too, all customized to mock the good folks of Richmond and everything. This group really earns their money I tells ya
