Did Barry Sless sit in again?
Yes, Barry was sitting in for this show
Another stellar setlist. Viola Lee is always sick.
a very small crowd last night, apparent evidence of the economic downturn. it also rained fairly continuously through the Allmans' set. thus, they closed the lawn off entirely, allowing/forcing everyone to sit in the seats, which still weren't especially full. I can't imagine the crowd was any more than 5,000 for a 20,000-seat shed. similarly, Joan Osborne played the night before in Richmond for a crowd of less than 50 at Toad's Place, where they also closed off the upstairs.
someone issued hundreds of "ticket vouchers" for Phil at Va Beach, which looked like tickets and allowed the holder to redeem at the box office for a "lawn" ticket upon payment of the $6 facility fee. so I got in for $6, and there were several people standing outside the box office trying to give away their vouchers when I went in during the Bros' set.
the set seemed fairly tight, thanks I suppose to the 5 practice sessions. Barry played all night on pedal steel only, as far as I could tell. Teresa was onstage most of the night, occasionally leaving for a song or so.
I didn't really notice Phil's "meltdown" during Fire, but they did rev it up and finish with a bang. they also finished Casey Jones in overdrive, with Jackie spewing out the lyrics faster and faster. overall, Phil's set seemed kind of on the short side. obviously, they only had a limited amount of time to be on stage while co-billing with the Allmans, but it felt like the Allmans were on stage longer than Phil. Phil left the stage at 10:40, and came back to get the Viola encore wrapped up by the 11:00 curfew. it definitely seemed like a second set, and would have liked to have seen the first set, especially since Phil doesn't close the show every night. twould be much better to get the Allmans off stage by 8:00, and have Phil do two sets until midnight.
The setlist does look good. Obviously the Marin rehearsals were geared towards 2 hour sets.
Who sang Lady with a Fan?
Did the ABBs play past 8?
" apparent evidence of the economic downturn."
Or perhaps a lack of interest in this lineup after a year of the same old same old?
so far, 2 shows w/ the ABB and not one sit-in from either band in the other's set???
that's just plain wrong in my book. both of those bands need to figure out how to loosen up a bit and just get out there and jam some songs together.
no cross-pollination between bands = WEAK SAUCE
molitz joined the allmans for high falls, i think. i dont see anyone from phils band playin with the abb, it just doesnt fit the program so to speak.
phil sang terrapin all the way through....while theresa did her best at being a raving, twirling rock n roll goddess that she isnt...phil, please reconsider having her taint your legacy...its embarrasing to us all...laughable at times...
it seemed like there was no energy last night for both bands after a good start at merriweather post the night before. the brothers turned in a normal brothers set n phils band just didnt seem to have the kick it needs to shine.....just my take on it....
as for the turnout, va beach has never been a strong turnout for either band and with tix selling for face at the price they ask, i didnt expect many folks there. i ended up with a $30 9th row ctr. after gettin miracled at merriweather the night before with a 15th row ctr. did i pay too much?
without creating a stir on this board i will say this, i was reminded why i kinda gave up on the abb. their fans need to chill n stop tryin to tell folks to sit down during the show and to stop with the "warren is god" theory. hes good and all but the real master is derek.....
thanks to the boys in front of me who insisted on yellin towards my mics durin phil...guess you needed more beer and brothers music to sedate you into a drunken stupor....
...
Interesting. I was in the 5th row center at Merriweather and all of the ABB fans around me (and it was a LOT more crowded down there then during Phil's set) were fine. I stood up the entire time, as did everyone else around me, and I never heard a word about it.
>while theresa did her best at being a raving, twirling rock n roll goddess that she isnt...phil, please reconsider having her taint your legacy...its embarrasing to us all...laughable at times... <
hahaha, agreed!
"theresa did her best at being a raving, twirling rock n roll goddess that she isnt...phil, please reconsider having her taint your legacy..."
I certainly don't agree.
Teresa Williams adds a lot to the musical mix, especially on the harmonies which since the Q have been sorely lacking. That's one of the things that headband was so good at, filling that midrange harmony. If you ask me Molitz adds nothing to the mix. For one, I can never hear his playing and he can't sing if his life depended on it. Good singing and playing is not in HIS repitoire. And it hurts this band IMHO. Teresa, on the other hand, adds good vocals and ENERGY. Plus she's easy on the eyes if you know what I mean.
Anybody got the ABBs setlist?
I think Phil's sound guys hate keyboards. Mookie was never in the mix during '05 and after several shows with Molitz, I have yet to hear one note from his keyboard.
>Plus she's easy on the eyes if you know what I mean.<
which adds zero credibility to her being in any band whatsoever. the only people saying this are guys over 40 years old that haven't had a good piece of ass in years.
you want some real sensuality on stage, just go back to Joan Osborne. now that girl can front a man's band and own them all, we all saw that plenty of times when she was givin a chance with PLF and The Dead.
yeah TW's got some good vocals, agreed. but she acts like some over-40 bimbo that just discovered the jamband scene and is now gonna act like a high-schooler on stage. that IS laughable. especially given her true credibility in the music genres she has earned them in.
Teresa looks like she's having a lot of fun up there, plus she can belt out a tune really well.
I had an especially good time. Thought both bands were very good. Maybe all of Phils set wasnt played without flaw, but the energy was there without a doubt. "Meltdown" may have been a poor choice of words on my part to describe what happened at the end of Fire. To be honest I was so into the tune when he started singing like a madman (he doesnt usually put quite that much umph in to his singing) at the end I figured something had to have happened. The crowd certainly erupted at that moment. A couple times throughout the night he looked perturbed, especially in regards to sound. Not sure if anyone else noticed that.
> but she acts like some over-40 bimbo that just discovered the jamband scene and is now gonna act like a high-schooler on stage. that IS laughable. especially given her true credibility in the music genres she has earned them in.<
i was thinking just that while watching her "dance" during terrapin with her arms in the air w her head bobbing up n down.. like a beevis n butthead character....rock on brah....
n yes spliffy, my meat wasnt in the seat last night...sorry...but that picture looks just like the thre guys in front of me....no b.s.
after the opening shakedown they all seemed relieved to make it through the song, especially molo who stood up and made body movements to that effect....maybe it was the sound, maybe it was the chilly weather....
alls good folks....carry on....to psu n nokia....
Hmmm - Not to judge by setlist alone (which is all I can do until the recordings are posted), but I'd hafta say the setlist for the 9/30 show looks way more interesting. This show looks very "standard". Like Boston from June . . .
wow. you guys are true jack asses.. teresa is up there having fun, getting into the music, she has had a great career in country music, and she in no way is trying to do anything but add to phil's band. why so critical??? its so easy to critique these people who give it their all but your sitting at home on a computer, as cliche as that sounds, even if you dont like it, dont spread such negativity, please!
At the risk of spreading negativity I have to agree that Teresa can look pretty odd on stage when she starts jumping up & down and flailing her arms & head; she looks like she's trying too hard.
But I also thought Joan often looked wrong on stage with Phil & The Dead, but ultimately I really couldn't care less what they LOOK like, I care what they SOUND like and what they add, and I really like Teresa's contributions as a singer, more than Joan.
Maybe im a a 40 something...but i kinda this teresa has the best hair going.
What time did Phil hit the stage? Going to Charlotte tomorrow night and we're planning on skipping the brothers. So, looking for an estimate on when to go in.
Thanks!
I love what Teresa brings to the table for us to feast on.
Plus...if you think she looks foolish rocking out on stage...turn and look to your left or right...trust me there will be people looking 100% worse(not to mention the smell)
Pugs tell us how you really feel!lol
>>>>> What time did Phil hit the stage? Going to Charlotte tomorrow night and we're planning on skipping the brothers. So, looking for an estimate on when to go in.
Thanks!
Phil went on around 8 I believe...... Skipping the Brothers?? WOW..... I know folks who don't really care for them but I would never skip it...... LOL, just me though
Listening to some of this show tonight - damn, they sound good. Phil fucking rages the last verse of Fire. Wonder what inspired that?
Phil will probably start 9ish.
Last night he played from 6ish to 8:15. Allmans came on at 9, played until 11.
Cool, thanks for the info.
I like Teresa - she's the best thing that's happened for this band this year - actually her contributions and Molitz's development have been the ONLY "growth" areas of this lineup IMHO . . .
Listening to the LMA version of this set. It is killer. I love Peaceful Valley, and hope they work more Ryan songs back into the reportoire. There's a really funky jam between Terrapin and Scarlet, too. Very nice!
Bslrbi,
What is the LMA version of this set. The reason I ask is that CD's were available for the Allman's set, at the venue, right after the show. I forget the name of the company that provided that service. Did Phil do this as well and if so, how do you get a hold of a copy.
Carl,
That's shorthand for Live Music Archive.

Great audience recording.
listening to it now.
Phil is VERY loud for an outdoor Audience recording!
Peaceful Valley with Larry on the fiddle, sounds great.. the 17+ minute Viola encore doesn't suck either

while i would agree, how can we deny that Jackie Greene has become a MUCH better guitar player from those first couple of shows in July 2007?
Also i was at this show, one neat thing to note is that during Good Lovin, Jackie played the Allmans brother riff for " Jessica" before the last verse.
