Heads Up to those traveling into Columbus...

The city of Columbus' 4th of July fireworks are the same night as the Furthur show and they take place right in the same area as the venue. There will be thousands of people coming downtown. Roads will be closed near the venue and traffic could be rough. Plan on getting there early and be careful driving home. There will be a lot of police on the roads and roadblocks will be a possibility later. Be safe and let's have a real good time!

If you still need a room downtown check hotwire.com.

I picked up a room at the holiday inn for $69. only a six block hike to the show.

This is not spam, just trying to help out some Zoners.

TRAFFIC AND PARKING NIGHTMARE WARNING. 300,000 people are expected to descend on downtown Columbus for Red White and Boom! Fireworks are a few blocks from LC pavillion. People have been camping out there since last night, just for the fireworks. Come no less than 4 hours before show time or you may be turned away. That's right. Most of the streets in the area are closing and almost all of them close at 6 pm. There will be no parking anywhere not even for the show after about 2 or 3 pm. Fireworks are at 10 and they will end about the same time as the show. So don't expect to get on the road after the show for a long time. More info at redwhiteandboom.org.

I think there is a song missing in that second set posted above.

I am not an expert on all Dead songs. I show the 2nd set as:

Scarlet
??? sung by Bobby
Wharf Rat
Shakedown
King Solomon's Marbles
Let it Grow
Standing On The Moon
Not Fade Away

E: Touch of Grey

They went on about 7:20 and played til a little before 8:30, then 2nd set started around 9:00 and played until a little before 11:00, including encore.

Traffic was a mess getting out of there due to the 500,000 estimated people downtown for the fireworks.

They started right at the beginning of KSM and ended right at the end of Let It Grow, from what I remember.

That very well could have been it, I didn't recognize it. I was in the beer line and couldn't hear the lyrics and the music was muffled, but I thought it used the word "dream" a few times near the end.

I was wondering how the fireworks were going to impact the show, and I was absolutely amazed at what happened. Just as they sang the "cracklin' like a thunder cloud" line in Shakedown the first burst went off. Then we were treated to a fantastic King Solomon's then Let it Grow. Just as Let it Grow was winding down the finally was exploding - truly magical.

Hey Eric - this is Eric. If you are out there in the Zone it was nice meeting you last night.

I made the trip from se indiana to columbus for the show. got to meet up and hang with tapecat & kitten. that was nice. the show was a real letdown however. I had heard lots of good reviews of shows, so I was looking forward to a good show. what I feel we got was a show from the 90's, some really good moments but a lot of crap also.
first up, turn the frigging volume up. my stereo plays louder that the band did. the crows talking was louder than the band. please turn up the volume!
I really like the playing of this band. I just need it louder and a little more inspired. it seemed to me like they were just going thru the motions, not really with any feeling at all.
I also was disappointed at the setlist compared to some of the other shows on this tour. if I knew we were gonna get a throwaway show I woulda stayed home.
there were some real highlights for me. the loser>bew was sweet, just needed to be louder. scarlet was kinda slow but still pretty nice. the ksm>let it grow was the highlight of the show for me. we just needed more moments like these.
it was mentioned by a couple different folks that it was like a broadway play of the dead, complete with background singers that were unneeded. I kinda agree. sad to say this show will probably be my final show. I really hate watching train wrecks live.

Funny how subjective music can be. Far from a train wreck, I thought that the band was tight, with a solid groove from song to song. I thought the setlist was thoughtful and creative. The band was inspired at all the right moments. Did Bobby scream at the end of bucket like he did in the Spring of 90, no. Phil was having fun-and his bass playing was the highlight for me.

I didn't have a religious experience, but I had really enjoyable concert. I Would feel blessed to see them again.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By memphis mike (Rogerdodger) on Sunday, July 04, 2010 - 06:11 pm: Edit Post

train wreck probably was too harsh. I'm just really disappointed in what I heard. I know that's why we would go to more than one show, but these days my funds are limited and this was as close as they were coming to me. I had just hoped for more based on reviews of previous shows. I still don't think I'll plunk the coin down again. maybe I shoulda gone to gratefulfesat instead and seen david nelson, mark karan, larry keel peter rowan, donna's band and others. I'm just very disappointed in what I saw.

The proper term for describing what I heard versus the detractors in this crowd, is not subjective as you have stated. The proper term...is THEY JUST DONT GET IT. This show FURTHUR proves that this band is so hot, so good, and so DEADicated to the music, that I could not be more GRATEFUL for every chance to be hear them. I just cannot imagine how anyone who was at this show could not have thoroughly enjoyed it. It was played seamlessly, with power, with intensity and focus, and creativity....and all that energy they bring...and its all just for you!!!! I feel so fortunate to have appreciated this great music for long enough, thick and thin, and to have it pay off in this way. But what I dont understand is...how can you actually criticize this band when you know what you are in for when you go, is up in the air. Some shows are mellower than others, some have crappy setlists, sometimes you cant hear where you are, and sometimes your just too damn high, or whatever, but ..... I mean c'mon fool...isn't this what you signed up for that day you threw some random Dead sticker on your car and thought that made you an official deadhead... All I know is, if you didnt enjoy what this band pulled off at this show, your right, you should get off the damn bus and dont come back.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By memphis mike (Rogerdodger) on Monday, July 05, 2010 - 01:35 pm: Edit Post

thanks for your comment harley. I really don't appreciate being called a fool. this section is for personal reviews of shows and that's what I gave. for your information I've been on the bus since '69 so I feel I have a right to my opinion. I was not high at the show, perhaps others were too high I don't know. I was just disappointed in the show. I've seen plenty of bad nights in the past and kept coming back anyway, cause you never know when that magical show will appear. my problem is nowadays I'm limited in party funds, I'm retired and on ss and a small pension. this was my only shot at seeing this band this year. from other folks reviews I just expected so much more. I'm still on the bus, but I'll spend my funds more wisely in the future. I am glad you enjoyed the show and sad that I didn't.

I haven't seen a dead related show since Rothbury last year. I was glad to see Phil and Bob still up there playing dead music. I went to it expecting Phil & Bob playing with a new band and that's exactly what I got. The guys in the band are all talented and johns really doing justice for the Jerry songs a good show with a mixed up dancable setlist. It's all about the chops! Big moments were the shakedown/Solomons marbles/let it grow ending. Dead members, lighting, and fireworks how can you lose?

Reminded me of hot air baloon over 3 Rivers in 1990 during Row Jimmy...............people in baloon were low enough to hear tunes and stuck their arms out of basket rowing.

Classic.............

This is a lifetime opportunity (I would say once but it has been many times since Jerry Died) to see an EXPERIENCE.

God bless the WHOLE SCENE!

Just got back from Gratefulfest after catching Furthur Friday.

Amazing Show, Scarlett, Wharf Rat, and Shakedown were worth the price of admission. The rest was just a bonus. I seriously don't know what some of you are expecting.

If you plan on seeing Furthur don't try and wait for tix, or a miracle. I was getting offers on mine for up to $200.

Thanks to all the kind folks I met in the lot.

HAve to agree with Memphis Mike on this one folks. I wouldn't quite say trainwreck, but I would say "just a show". I love these guys, but if you cant be truthful about what you just saw and were a part of what does it matter if you say "It was great, it was awesome, it was..."? It is just you running off at the head. I feel 125% qualified to rate shows because I have seen so many "just a show"s, But like Mike I too keep coming back hoping for another one of those "smokers" that take us into the cosmos.

By the way if you get a chance to catch the Rhythm Devils with Tim Blume and Davey Knowels YOU BETTER DO IT. The sickest, most raw, rock and roll style of Grateful Dead music you will ever hear. Mickey and Bill have a mind melting line up with these guys.
Thank you for a real good time.
