Inbound traffic is brutal. 45 minutes to go the final 1 mile. So slow that I've connected into the Wifi signal of a house by the side of the road.

Great set 1. Feel so bad for the thousands just arriving now due to the huge traffic jam. The promoter blew it on this one. The venue just can't handle a show of this size. Only one road available to access all parking (!) and they still had the audacity to collect parking fees which caused more back ups. It is not unreasonable to arrive 3 hrs early and expect to park and get into the venue before set 1 - most did not tonight.

Oh my, I must say, I'm in awe, yet happy to be home, unreal so far as I'm concerned. They really brought it. Lots of stuff clicked, the into Dark Star was over the top...Way out there. I'm pinching myself still, just making sure It was all real. What a great band, I gotta keep going or coming but man I'm getting old. The Terapin was spot on, the first set killed from star to finish, I know, I rambeling. This band makes me very HAPPY. I must rest. Boy....do they make it worth it or what?
Peace

JK = Stella - Heavanly! at that - This dude makes JG proud, I can only imagine, the Spirt lives on in IT - The Music -

Hey AreU, nice to hear from you. My kids want me to do all 4 days of the Vibes; I'm not sure these old bone can carry me.....yea right.....I'll likely be there, AreU going to do the Gathering scene? Let me know and we can hook up. I'll be in dance mode again I'm sure. Never can have Too much Fun, Love and Happiness. I said it above, the boys brought it again! last night. Just look at the 1st set, then..... the 2nd - better yet.

1st set Golden Rd killed, Born Cross Eyed done as well as I've ever seen no heard it, Aillgator just as funky as when Pig did it, hard down and dirty, from that point I knew we were in for it tonight. I was right, by the end of the show I was big swetty, smiling, smelling, Happy head. Still had a bounce left in my step after this sureal show. Truckin a bit on the mellow end as I remember, but couldn't keep from dancin by mid song and the dance continued, the jam into and intro for Feelin All Right just kills and has whispered undertones of Right Place Wrong Time, I admit I'm the only one that hears it, but thats my story afterhearing it again last night after Rochester. Then New Potato, Cream Puff War, and Viola....c'mon, to good to be true, right? not - the dance machine was in ful swing.

2nd set opened with a definite Lost Sailor tease into a new one for me from Bobby which I thought was good and has potential. Althea gave me shivers up me spine and the tears flowed during Magnolia Mtn. From there on I had to keep picking my jaw up off the ground, the jam going into space, did I write Space?, I mean Dark Star, brought me right to the edge, with the Old, rutrow, I gotta go thoughts entering me head again, but I stayed; just the way I always do and am I glad I do, because the Terrapin was classic, with me dance conducting the entire suite of tunes. I was overly impressed, awe, shocked, nipple erections the whole deal for this one. It was played beyond Furthur, how do they do it? Stella = JK - tears "just one more time" UJB upbeat and hammered home. OMSN and SSDD had me dancing til the shuffelback to the car. What a scene man. Another show under my belt and Happy to say, I'll be back. Cya then.
Peace,
Hoff

Nice show . We got there early, around 3 pm and thus avoided huge traffic jams...but the $10 parking fee seemed like they werre sticking it to us...Scenic spot for a show...Dark Star and Terrapin was a highlight for me...but holy cow - they had high energy on their 1st tune of Golden Devotion for sure...

I feel bad for all who got stuck in traffic.Google map actuallt did right by me.Took some back roads but came in from the opposite side from everybody else.Got to the joint and pulled right in behind friends of mine who were stuck in traffic for at least an hour.took the same way out and beat a long line of cars back to the main road.Once inside WOW!!!what a view from the top of the hill.Golden road ripped.Alligator was a lot of fun.Started getting annoyed at all the repeats from Rochester then came the Cream puff worry and it made up for it all.New Bobby tune to open the set didn't really do anything for me.Althea smoked! From the Dark Star until the end of the second set I was sweating with goosebumps!!Wanted the Terrapin so bad and they didn't disappoint. All in all I had a blast and definitely got my money's worth.

Coincidence? I think not...

Do you think the band played the Magnolias for little Magnolia per Sean's grovel???

" By Sean Allen (Blindmule) on Wednesday, June 30, 2010 - 12:43 pm: Edit Post
Herkimer will be my 3 year old daughter's first "dead" show - she's been to lots of different shows before with us but this one is really special! Her name is Magnolia and she LOVES Sugar Magnolia, Magnolia Mountain (for obvious reasons) and Mr. Charlie (Chuba Chuba) and knows all the words and sings them passionately everywhere we go. haha

If you could find it in your time and hearts to play any of the above, it would make her day - which if course in turn would make mine! She's VERY excited to spin and dance in her new dress with Mom and Dad in the back of the field...

If not - the evening will still be incredibly special, but I of course had to put this out in cyberspace with warm regards!

Peace!"

Mr. Charlie would have been great, but I guess two out of three ain't bad :-)

Sean, My daughter is 3 1/2. Great age. Did she love the Magnolia live songs so much?

Could you get them to play Dancin', Gimme Some Lovin' & St. Stephen>Good Times, Bad Times in Philly for me? I'll even buy a ticket for little Magnolia if you think that will help:- Thanks.

Good lord. What was in that water, man? From where I was, about 20 feet center from stage , the real show after nightfall was looking back on the crowd - stage lights tunneling to the ring of trees at the top of the hill - full star cover - venus blazing bright to stage right.....

The show was great, the view was unbelievable, but the traffic sucked. Got in line on robinson road at 4:45 and got in the lot and parked at 7:15. High-tailed it to the show and I am glad they started late.

1st set smoked with all the old gems. Phil sounds great, Bobby did his thing and the harmonies were real nice. Much better show than the 2/14/10 cornell show.

I hope everyone found there way out alright. Walking to our lot after the show on dark roads thru the woods with no lights. There were light poles but the lights weren't on. It was freakin' dark out there.

We left the main gate thru a deluge of aggressive balloon sales people, man that was fucked......

The dead has gotten me to go to some places I have never been before, and this was one of them---beautiful scenery, gotta love upstate NY.

Good Morning ya'll,
This place was quite scenic, the view from the top of the hill was beautiful, and easily the best outdoor place I have been to in years, you could not ask for a more beautiful day and evening and over all the folks did a good job running the event. Sitting on that hill was serene.

The had recycling everywhere, which most people were using. $10 for parking was a drag, and yes it was slow getting in, but once you were in it was quite special.
We came in from the directions on 167, which was posted on their site and then they removed them. We went out that way and had no traffic at all or cops/dwi going down that long hill, and jumped on the Thruway at Little Falls.
I will say that not having any free drinking water for an event this size was borderline negligent IMHO.I mean they were making peeps pour out their water bottles at the entrance and you would think that was for the water inside, but nope that was not the case.

We were stage right in front of the board for set 1 and it was high energy and loud, this show Phil was clearly the loudest of the three I saw.I was very happy. They ripped into the first two openers and then into an intense Alligator which featured a wicked jam, thought I heard GDTRFB teases in there, and then they launched into Truckin' and Bobby totally forgot the opening verses, he missed the first one, then tried to rebound for the second and was at a complete loss, he was pissed at himself. He leaned to Phil and asked as to what to do and Phil said lets just start it again, he seemed like it was no big deal since he was having a blast, and the second time it worked. It was high energy and featured a decent peak jam out and almost had a another, it was more of a shadow of the first one but all in the first set was quite good.

We ran into Sideshow Bob at this point, actually he was standing right behind us and he called the Dave Mason tune, which was played very well and warmly received by us up front.
New Potato Caboose returned up to our 1968 set list and was good, harmonies were rough at places and then they exploded into Cream Puff War, Bob called this one earlier as well. Then they closed it out with a ripping, although a shorter version compared to what they have done to it recently, of Viola Lee, which great. We moved back, cause my son was not having the best time and the sound was amazing at the base of the hill and up to about halfway up.
At the top, where many peeps where, it simply was not loud enough, but that was like 150 yards from the stage.

Set two started off on a subtle note with a poetic Sage and Spirit. I had not heard this song since my first show back in 1980. It was played with a sweet elegance and is such a great song.Nice to see it back.

It was very clear the band was totally on they and, the sound a quarter up the hill was perfect, quite nicely they transitioned into that new Bobby song, which I liked more than Mulli Gulli.
We were off to a soft start here but the band was clearly in the Zone and this was the best I have heard them sound on this tour.
Althea was a welcomed twist and sounded super and they nailed, it although Bobby at times sounded like a screeching cat with his tone, it dramatically improved by the next song lol.

I love this band playing Magnolia Mountain, and so we were on the mountain, and once again it was a sweet version. Then they ramped up the energy, although it seemed to never top the first set the entire second, with well played Sugar Magnolia and once again that elusive SSDD was not played... yet.

No More Do I continued on the cerebral theme the band began with Sage & Spirit and was cool, but the energy was drifting at this point from the crowd, we were just at the base of the hill and most peeps were sitting or laying on their blankets and did not seemed all that moved by the newer material.

The jam out of this song was unique and kinda cool sounding and was more scifi sounding like, than organic and then they sprung the most intense part of the set on us. This Dark Star was very cerebral but had such a nice groove to it, John had that watery sound on his guitar reminiscent of an early '74 DS and the band really did a excellent job on this version,I also think this DS clearly demonstrated where this band is heading as a group, as it maybe be more textural soundscapes, than epic jamming. I am sure it will stand up quite well on multiple listens.

As I stated earlier this set it seemed the band was flowing as one and could play whatever they wanted, Phil was rock solid the entire set, although not as loud as the first, he was simply majestic and the band sounded super.Jay and John were really deepening their connection to the music.

They came back to th second verse which was sung really well and then a play it out for a few minutes before arriving at Terrapin, the transition and maybe the best of the night and was flawless. This version was easily the best I have seen this band play and to hear the entire sweet was a treat.
Then to drop into Stellar Blue was perfect IMHO. I have been waiting for this song since this band formed and John and the band delivered a soaring version that was stunning, what a sweet Jerry coda :-)
Then a sing along UJB and we were styling.I have never, ever left a show early but my 12 year old was running out of steam, as were many other kids, so we had to bolt to beat the traffic, which was the thing to do since were were home around 2:30 am. As I drove east we watched the 1/2 moon rise over the horizon with Mars off to her left, it was a perfect ending to a glorious day. Sorry I did have to miss that SSDD.
Happy Trails.

Towards the end of the Mountain Jam, pre-Truckin', I hear something else but I can't put my finger on it, maybe 12-20 bars of structure, some bluesy thang, then bammo into Truckin'.

This first set is the best these ears have heard of this tour so far (from the tapes I mean).

Sweet.

I heard the mountain jam - just a tease, no way to justify it in the setlist.

Then again the fact that I heard it is no guarantee that it was played.

OMFG! HS! I was just listening to last night’s first set while riding through the mountain forests of Portland and it lifted me off my bike and into the zone. I can only use physics terms to describe this show, they were so on fire! It seems that, as a combo, they quantized and popped into the next orbital last night. The entry into the transition state must have been the six album show in Calaveras County and, after wobbling for a few shows at that higher level, they made the jump! And I thought the second Coney Island show was something. Not only have they developed little Feet/Zappaesque tightness, but they are beautifully increasing the delta S, the entropy, of the jams. Having a jazzed based pianist is paying off (my brother, who is a professional jazz pianist from SF, says Chimenti is a monstrous talent). JK is soaring. Joe has taken off. Phil and Bob, at their best! I am so bummed to miss this show. I hope somebody there said hi to Jerry last night. They sure love upstate NY! Probably the best show of the tour.
Also Magnolia Mountain! The new tune is great.

Phish tour isnt over-- those herkimer wooks are of thePhil/Bob scene. How would i know? I went from Merriweather seeing Phish to Penns Peak? Guess where all the tour wook losers were?

Jim Thorpe PA.

Thanks Furthur for making my Merriweather weekend so wonderful by attracting all the bugs up in Coney Island!

Gelston Castle folks dropped several hundred k to build that entrance and roads to handle tractors, bus', etc for shows like that. They hoped to hold 8+ shows next summer.

Beautiful, old school summer fest scene.

However, unless you were a semi local (me), they've only got one good way in from the Thruway. Hard to overcome that one. Can only handle a certain # and if Furthur comes back, they'll get more than last night as the legend grows.

>>>>>>to the person who posted about the mountain jam tease during alligator...we must have been the only two who heard it man...i kept asking folks after the show if they heard it and they looked at me like i was fucking crazy..."no sorry dude" "nope sorry can't help ya out" "i dont know man"...were you people at the same show i was???

It was there, but it wasn't the whole 'basic theme from Mountain Jam' It was more like the first half played through 6-7 times and repeated without the second half, which then morphed into the IKYR tease.....

So, it went something like this:

GDTRFB tease >
1/2 Mountain Jam tease >
IKYR tease >

They teased Cream Puff War several times thruout the 1st set - mostly between Alligator and Truckin'. I was jonesing for that one so it built up the suspense really well.

solid show, great scene, coming off the polce state at Phish in Candidaguia, it was quite a relief to do whatever the hell I wanted in the lot. That said, why the hell not allow overnight parking, if cops are going to set you up like a bowling pin with road blocks on the way out. yes this legend will grow if/when Furhtur decides to come back here. make it a 2 day fest, with camping, and you will have one of the best venues anywhere. Reminded me somewhat of being in Buckeye Lake 91, without the motorcross track, and minus 75k or so. Thanks again boys, for a real good time.....again.

Yup, clusterfuck ordeal getting in. I was with friends with medical issues so I didn't want to rush/hassle anyone so was later than I wanted to be, and then when sitting in line I didn't want to stress anyone out by suggesting trying driving around back roads (which sounds like it would have been fruitless anyway), but at 7:30 we'd made it to the entrance so I hoofed it in solo and made it to just in front of the board off to the left just in time for 1st set. Sound was great. Set was amazing - couldn't have asked for anything better. Ended up next to Ted/Stella Blue. After the 1st 3 "old" songs I thought about Cream Puff War, that being on my "bucket list" of songs I wanted to see Furthur do. Sure enough they teased it several times. Then did it!!!! Thought that would be the end of the set but they tacked on Viola Lee. Short but powerful version. Phil was playin' his ass off. I didn't hear the Mtn Jam tease but if Bucky says it happened, it probably did.

Went back up the hill to hang with Lynn and my friends for setbreak. Was gonna head back down but didn't want to leave Lynn alone when my friends went to the porta-potty so was caught back there when the 2nd set started. Hardly anyone knew what Sage and Spirit was. That gave me the 2nd of the 3 remaining songs on my "bucket list" of songs to see Furthur perform - in 1 show! The one chord change that sounds like Lost Sailor drew cheers the 2 times it came up. That was amusing. The sound was suprisingly good that far back so I decided to stay. It was echoing off the hills/trees very nicely, and the air was pretty still. The view was unbelievable, seeing all the twinkling lights in the distance, the big dipper overhead, various fireworks happening simaltaneously in various towns in the distance. Sorta like at Red Rocks, where being further back is actually better since you get the "essence" of the venue's sights and sounds. Dug the new song - sorta like Jack Straw, lyrics mentioned 7 hills, thought of the founding of Rome (city of 7 hills). Transition into Althea had West LA hints. I like the Ryan Adams songs sung by John - was hoping for Peaceful Valley (now my only "bucket list" song left to see), but Magnolia Mtn was done well. Sugar Mag got the crowd rockin' and I was glad they saved the SSDD for later. No More Do I had very powerful backing vocals, unlike any previous versions. The subsequent jam melted down into pure space, this sent many attendees headed for the gates, or at least to the beer lines. Dark Star was spacier than Coney Is but on the short side, I was OK with this since it was played so well and the set had been so good. The jam after the 2nd verse had strong Wheel hints but I was rooting for Terrapin as my friends really wanted to see the whole suite and had gone to Rochester not Coney Is last week, they obliged nicely. This version was more together and powerful than Coney Is. Stella Blue was nice but I'm still not beyond the hangover of seeing it (and Black Peter) so much back in the day. At least John sings Stella and did it very well. Uncle John's was a nice extra - was expecting the Sunshine Daydream sandwich completion. No Supplication jam like Coney Is. Sat Night with the SSDD tacked on was rockin' fun. Getting out was not nearly the ordeal of getting there - we took back roads to avoid Rt 28, which was backed up all the way to the local road coming from the venue. After 2 Sat's in a row of clusterfuck traffic/parking ordeals and barely making it in for the 1st set, we're gettin' to Sat Phila EARLY EARLY EARLY . . .

Listened to Rob's recording this morning. Killer show! A couple of notes: no mistaking the Mountain Jam; 7 Hills of Gold is a fine song... glad to see them going a little Furthur.

just to add....1 guy mentioned no beer...that was crazy...they checked id and gave wristbands right away after walking over a bridge....i had 4 saranacs and a mikes hard lemonade for 20 bucks on no line and back to where we were standing within basically 4 minutes and i did that at least 6 times...my only beef and i will not go there again unless fixed was the nightmare getting in...absolutely no reason for it

they ran out of water, not beer. and the beer was good too, 4 bucks for saranac stout or pomegranate on tap. (sp)

Yes, running out of water (or having ridiculously long lines for it) whilst hawking beer as aggressively as the nitrous mafia is a common theme at venues this tour - at least they haven't confiscated bottle caps - but I figure Mann will do that . . .

Great show indeed!

If they did play the Magnolia tunes for my little one it would be an honor beyond words - if it was just a coincidence, it was still amazing!

I definitely caught the Mountain Jam tease in there too - it seemed to be there JUST long enough to go "was that?"

Thanks for another great night!

Oh BTW:

Was that not the slowest, most unenergetic Truckin you have ever heard?

So slow, it was like a 78 record played at 33 speed......

And the 'buildups' at the end - not very built-up, especially the 2nd 'baby-build-up'.

Really, the only down point in the first set.

Just reading through again.... ah yes! I forgot about the Allmans tease but it was definitely there and I remember now! Not only were the beer Consessioneers extremely friendly but they were extremely cute! I asked one woman about her tye dye and she said her boss bought and gave them each one! Very cool! Pre-show festivities in the grassy lot reminded me of Summer tour in the 80s! Pure Kindeness!!

Excellent show!
We were waiting for this show since the tour was announced, and it lived up to all the anticipation and then some. Attended the first night in Asbury Park in December, and the Atlantic City show in February which were both, I thought phenomenal and phar better than any Ratdog or Furthur Fest shows, etc. I'd heard in the past, but this tour IMO has already gone so much FURTHUR!! Maybe it was the summer wind, maybe it was the heady NY treats, maybe it was the company, probably all of the above, but it definitely had something to do with the lands at Gelston - this show for me was the best incarnation of the good ol' Grateful Dead I've ever had the pleasure to be a part of. Missed poppa jer by about a year or two, but this for me was close enough.

As far as the TRAFFIC goes . . I got two separate staff members to admit that it was a calculated trickle in, for which we can only imagine what they thought they'd be stopping. As a result, not only did they have a raging lot scene taking place hours before the show, but also a parade of popped hatches and side-car strolling heads getting things going if we were on lot yet or not. The big question in my mind during our 2hour+ crawl over the mere 2mile long back road entrance was how the hell are they going to have MOEDOWN here!?? Somehow around 7:30 as we entered this mystically beautiful venue approaching our decent to the stage we struck up a conversation with a wonderfully pleasent man named Slyvin, and my question was answered, for he was the landowner of this great place!! while talking he mentioned moedown and how they'd be putting in "24 new roads" to better handle all of the traffic (hopefully that'll do it????) what a nice man he was, casually perusing the lands stopping strangers just to shake their hands - what are the odds?? . . . needless to say, from that point on, the night for us seemed to flow in some other-worldly way onstage and off.

The show itself was just incredible . . absolutely loved the old stuff in the first set -
I mean c'mon . . Golden Road, Alligator, New Potato>Cream Puff War>Viola Lee!!!????
and then a complete Terrapin in the second set . . . like an excerpt from my dream setlist this show is now and may always be my favorite (that i attended).

-thought I was hearing the notes for "Heaven Help the Fool" in the first few seconds of the 2nd set sage & spirit jam opener (i too am one of those who didn't recognize sage).
-i'm thinkin "Seven Hills of Gold" has some potential.
-the Mountain Jam is definitely there
-loved hearing Terrapin, but to hear the best version this tour IMO see 6/26 with Kenny Brooks on Sax - Russo absolutely explodes into the Flyer transition.

GO SEE FURTHUR! If this ain't close enough to pretend . . then what is.

and although I was fortunate enough to have gotten there early (early being in lot by 6pm after 2hours of traffic) Just being at Gelston Castle Estates far outweighs the hassle - this place is absolutely amazing. I only wish we could make it to moedown this summer.

crossing my fingers for a Gelston show next year!! I'll see you there ;)
Kamala

I had mighty high expectations after seeing the boys in Rochester a week earlier. The best tour opener I’ve ever witnessed. Anthem of The Sun!!! They became even higher when we finally got to parking lot and enjoyed a few hours of fun in the sun. The lot was a great scene, no hassles, hardly any fuzz anywhere, but TO THE JACKHOLES WHO BRING THEIR INTACT PITBULLS TO SHAKEDOWN STREET, GET A LIFE. THAT'S TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE!! FOR YOUR DOG, FOR HUMANS, AND FOR THE OTHER DOG THAT WAS CHEWED UP BY THE PIT. SHAME ON YOU!!

Anyway, despite only one long, narrow entrance/exit, Gelston Castle is a stunning venue. A long sweeping hill, probably 5-7 acres of room to groove (plus all the area at the top of the hill), stage at bottom of course, with gorgeous views looking north by northwest -the lovely rolling hills of the Mohawk River Valley. SUPERB. AWESOME. And easy beer, easy portos, easy wind. Not quite the natural amphitheater that is Highland Bowl, but pretty durned nice just the same. BIG!!

The night was wonderful: Clear sky, Venus setting slowly - chasing the sun to come up behind it again. Perfect temp, the crowd excited but not obnoxious. A very nice mix of young & old. Expectations high. We were to the immediate left of the soundboard with lots of space and it wasn’t hard to traipse closer now and then.

They NAILED Golden Road opener spot on. It just cooked. Expectations met? Maybe. Born Cross-eyed was good, John carried Alligator when Phil and Bobby started to squash it, and the rest of the show went the same way. John and Jeff hoisted Phil and Bobby time and again, and thank God for that. The two elders could have easily steered the show towards the senior center if not for John and Jeff. I don’t mind Bobby forgetting words here and there, but he has the potential to keep things TOO SLOW when they should be cooking. Thankfully John and Jeff are fully integrated and given plenty of leverage now, wasn’t always the case. So the younger boys, especially John, would give a jolt to slow burners to save the song, but the show still seemed disjointed, a bit bi-polar. Truckin was so-so, Feelin Alright NPC Viola Lee repeated too close to Rochester and not nearly as ripped as in Rochester. Jill Lesh and the road manager are doing setlists for the boys and they need to pay more attention to geography!!

Second set and the scene was getting better. Stars just starting to come out, spot lights from the stage pointed towards the heavens - shining on Jerry. The collective buzz mellowing after a busy first set. What ARE they gonna open with? Sage & Spirit, not a favorite, a bit of a yawner. Liberty would have been way way better. Then my heart jumped when Lost Sailor came on. No, wait, it’s just a tease. Damn, I wanted that. More snoozing with new Bobby song, Seven Hills. (I’ll admit that I listened to stream later and it’s pretty good - I just wasn’t ready for it) Then to Althea, an all time fav. WTF? It started really bumpy and it looked like it was going to crumble to dust just when John kicked it up a notch or six and they brought it back to life. I think Jerry got on their case, because they seemed inspired after the first 4-5 minutes of the song. Great interplay between John and Jeff. Fun watching that, like Jerry and Brent. OK, so back to expectations met? Mag Mountain was another yawner, but Sugar Mag brought things back. Disjointed show. Bi-polar. No More I do into Dark Star was respectable but not stellar, and Terrapin Suite, another all time fav, came on fairly strong but seemed to drop in and out, like a cellphone with a weak signal. Then came Stella, and John’s singing was brilliant - stole the show. They closed with an inspired UJB, and yes, Jerry was watching, perhaps guiding, from his perch on high, right on the Big Dipper’s handle.

No surprise with Saturday Night encore, and it was very nice to have Sunshine Daydream added. Perhaps they were trying to make up for the prior weaknesses in the show. Overall I’ll give it a 7.5 of 10 for the music. 9 of 10 when everything else is included (the venue, the views, the weather, the stars, the lot scene, etc.), but it’s really all about the music, right? I hope they play there again. And now on to Artpark. It’s gonna be hot.

I think you should go back and listen to the recordings. Phil smoked. Jesus wept. It was ALL that AND a bag of chips.
