Jesus. That Jack Straw was INSANE.
Yet another wacky second set.
Dear Mr. Fantasy.
some sweet runs by JK in that Jack Straw.
would like to hear good aud of this show to compare to the stream which has to be the stage monitor (in ear) mix, no?
Set by set, show by show, this band is becoming its own thing.
Love it.

Eyes
Is it me, or does EVERY Bob guitar and effect sound exactly the same? I see him tapping pedals, but I'm not hearing anything different.
Am Watching the stream of set II and must say it is sweet but to my surprise fairly composed and laid back. Is this indicative of the bands over all tempo of the tour or is it just this set?
OK, is it fireworks I'm hearing or some syncopated crackle?
Kenny- I agree- shades of '73 -to my immense pleasure!
Close main PZ page..
Phil was growlin that last verse of eyes. I like it...
Bob's a little impatient with John going interstellar rogue.
Days Between
Bandleader Bob eh zeno? JK is in the zone
I agree Zeno Marx. Got the same vibes watching it to. I was diggin' John...guess Bob wasnt :/
Hi...First post....LOVE the ICLIPS..I think this is the first time Ive ever heard a SBD of these guys....

She most certainly did! That said, I don't hate this one.
JK and jeff both on..bobby needs to break out his slide, focus on playin, and let JK sing
Weir owns Days Between - great version tonight.
Theotherone2 You gotta right click on the video screen>settings>the first tab (should look like an eye) and make sure the box for hardware excelleration is turned off..
Than restart your browser...
If that doesn't work to well, then d/l Firefox, and make sure you update your version of Flash and clear your cache.
where we goin??????
OK...so know that Ive gotten that first post out of the way....a few comments. First: It seemed that EYES was off key a bit. I love Jeff, but the solo he laid down seemed off key...was this on purpose. SECOND: I didnt realize Bob's vocals were still so strong. Im impressed. THIRD: JK is simply amazing and Phil vocally and bass wise is playing as good as he has since the late 70's: FINALLY: Wherwe is the interplay with ANYONE in the band and JK?? I mean is it me or does NO ONE LOOK at JK during the playing?? Is there no love for this guy??: OH AND ONE MORE: I LOVED Bobby in the late 80's playing wise, god he was amazing, but he really sounds flat, off key and just seems to be lost. I dont know if this is just tonite or hes lost what he had 15 years ago.....YOUR THOUGHTS....Oh, I had a BLAST in Coney Island!!

You know when a partial setlist is posted (as above) it's not alway telling what it could (or possibly should) also mention is the various jams between songs. (For example I have no idea where this jam is leading...wait, maybe it is Slipknot!)

If you get confused, listen to the music play
I really wanted them to stay in that pocket groove for a couple handfuls of measures (Franklin's). Allow Russo to dig a trench and for Phil to follow with the dance.
They have a curfew or something? They seem rushed.
Wow.....JK, Phil and Russo just on Fire voally and musically....I see a lot of acknowledgement and interplay between between Phil and JK, but I dont think Bobby has looked over at JK once....
Seems like they are cutting it short...unless they go into The Dew!

The camera got some great interplay between Phil & JK there at the end of Franklin's with both of them laughing...PRICELESS
I guess US Blues is OUT OF THE QUESTION!
I saw that Capn' JK and Phil really seemed to be digging each other....I LOVE what FURTHUR is doing and that we, in our 40's and 50's can still see QUALITY shows, but im really not feeling the love from Bobby at this point, he's just not emoting with the rest of the band like he did in the old days (7/4/89 anyone?)

Am I not the only one half expecting a U.S. Blues encore?
Or "Rockin in the free world" like the Q in Seattle on the 4th a few years back... but Warren sang that one
Duh
Well Phil said the encore would be appropriate.
God Weir's guitar sounds dreadful here...sorry to say it.......
Bob wasn't Mr.Enthusiasm tonight. That's for certain.
Killin' kittens
I remember when Bobby was learning to play slide on stage...he use to murder Little Red Rooster...Jerry would laugh and the play dueling slides with him and put him to shame...He sounds like he's still learning...
I think Bobby might be a little miffed because Phil as steped up as the spokesperson for the band....I it was sure fun to watch them on iClips rather than just a stream....love it!!!
Iclips!!!! I want more!!!!!
Ok my last post on this but Bobby,,,geez would it kill you to even ACKNOWLEDGE JK's presence during the group hug?? wow, not even the slightest glance...what is that?
You know Capt'n'Kurt I may have to disagree with you a bit on Bobby's slide playing. There were times (in 'Rooster' for example) that I liked the sound of the slide and assumed it was Jerry only to look up and see Bobby was playing.
Wow Duke...didn't notice. If BW does that all the time now that would be a shame.
Dan - I admit that Bobby's slide did get progressively better...I'm mainly thinking of the actual first times he tried to play slide in Winterland in front of a very forgiving hometown crowd
It's weird because Bobby played with DSO a couple of times so I tought he would have been the bigest backer of JK in the band and that Phil would have been the naysayer...but it seems that Phil & JK hit it off fabulously and have quite a bit of musical interplay
really Duke?! Seriously? 'Look at him during the group hug'? WTF? while playing? huh?! If you were listening to it on a CD or in your car would you know that he wasn't 'gazing into JK's eyes during the jams'? Wow. I'm so glad they still play at all! Seriously Alice - What's become of the baby?
OK, I wasn't thinking that far back. Now he's (usually) OK for the song he plays slide in.
I remember watching BW during the on the job training slide campaign in 78...he has improved but that ain't saying much...4/24/78 for example ...a killer Ramble on Rose...cept for Weirs slide..
Adam....but i wasnt.
And I am EXTREMELY glad there are still shows to go to as well...
That being said, I am not going to just come here and blindly heap praise.
They are awsome, Coney Island was blast and a half. Russo is SICK. JK, PHIL, nuff said
Im merely commenting on Bobby's percieved "lack of inspiration" i.e he's mailing it in.
Maybe it was that farcical "frankenstein robotic walk" he did right before US Blues. You get the feeling that everything is not just exactly perfect with Bobby.
It may go deep with Bobby. I think Weir had a very deep love for Jerry both musically and emotionally.
Pop in the Truckin Up To Buffalo DVD. Watch DEAL....when Jerry is WAILING away on the final jam, look the left side of the TV, look at the grin on Bobby as he furiously tries to keep up.
having JK, a gifted musician on many levels, who sounds so close to Jerry, may be a little much for Weir to take on many different levels.
Just my 2 cents.
Night All....
Dan - He learned quite a bit from Jerry
I've seen bobby shake his head after really spaced out jamming during this tour...kinda like shaking out the cobwebs. Maybe it has nothing to do with John at all, and he is just trying to focus. I don't know about all that other jiberjaber. These guys seem to like playing together. It doesn't look like ego is really getting in the way, more like they are really making an effort. I like what I've seen, for sure. If you haven't noticed over the past 15 years or so Bob hasn't exactly been all smiles on stage.
Alot of this talk reminds me of what people always say about Derek Trucks: he doesn't look like he's having fun, doesn't move around on stage, doesn't look at other people in the band etc.
Folks, these people are musicians, not performers. It's a losing game to extrapolate much from what you see on iClips. A musician going into the zone is not necessarily an entertaining thing to watch. And, second guessing what musicians think about each other by how they are onstage is also a pretty slippery slope.
I've seen Furthur numerous times at rehearsal shows in very small places. I'm not worried about them!
BTW - this looks like a killer show.
How can you even tell if Bobby is smiling or not with that big bushy beard? I think we sometimes read too much into nothing with this extended band family. Unless I see Bob actually snub someone, I'm going to assume everything is ok between everyone. Hey, maybe Bob has decided that this lineup isn't all that he expected. The way all these guys have changed bandmates over the last 15 years after being in a core of musicians that were together for 30 years, you'd have to think they're just trying different things, different combinations, etc simply because they really couldn't for all those years. That said, I'm not going to try to read anybody's mind. If there still playing together 6 months from now, WIN.
I must admit I'm a little concerned about the chemistry between Bobby and JK. While I'm in love with Furthur and they are on fire, watching these two interact with one another on stage was a little troubling for me.
For instance, during Eyes of the World, there was a part deep into the jam when John started doing some really cool spacey stuff. Immediately, Bobby casts one of his only glances in his direction and JK stops at once. I know we all can tend to over-criticize the music, but it really seemed like JK got on Bobby's nerves there..ya know? I don't know if this means anything, but its just what I happened to notice.
-Jay
Damn, people are arguing in the reviews section now ???
So what WAS the encore ???
Look, everythings gotta be cool between them because they're on the bus TOGETHER until at least the Fall and beyond. As I've said before, JK is a "supporting" lead or a "hired gun" as they say in the business. This is Phil and Bob's "back-up" band.
If in doubt, keep pinching yourself to remind you that this is not 1969.
and Furthurmore....

the chemistry is fine between Bobby and Jk not to mention the rest of the band. Just listen to them, last night was amazing...what the heck do you think the encore was!!!????? That Cumberland Blues was outstanding! Jack Straw was also fantastic, and as was mentioned earlier the Slipknot jam had a nice groove that left you questioning where it might go. At one point my wife and I looked at each other and said "Shakedown?". It was a mystery indeed.
My favorite surprise of the night was the command Bobby had of Days Between. He really did own it. Also thought the transition from Days > Eyes was superb.
Really looking forward to hearing it again.
E: US Blues
Been reading a lot of these comments about Bobby and how he relates and its really getting ridiculous with everyones comments about Bobby getting or not getting along, the looks that he gives, his relationship with Jerry(OBVIOUSLY EVERYONE in this family of millions, especially the close members(i.e.band) misses Jerry greatly as any family member would miss a loved one) and how he can't deal with JK...what a pile of shit~~~~~~these guys are awesome and musically how can they get along any better than this??...and I'm sure that getting along personally carries into getting along musically...
Bobby rarely smiles on stage folks, it's been that way for years - if not decades - if you haven't noticed...no need for far-flung theories. As David Gans once said, people seem to project their own feelings on band members based on how they appear on stage, but when you get down to it, you really don't have a clue.
Agreed with the above! Bobby's not a grinner while playing like Phil is sometimes. Never was. And yes.... the beard is probably what is adding to most of the confusion here! Also: ever wonder what it's like to tour with a band on this scale playing 5 nights in 6 cities, as they are between 6/30 and 7/5? I bet it isn't easy, esp. when 63. So, at worst, last night was Bobby's night to conserve energy. The show must go on!
Some times with some of the left field comments i wonder are you guys just trying to keep the crowds from coming back?! :-)
I'll pile on with a positive spin to the Bobby/JK comments here.
We watched last night's iClips.net stream on a 46inch flat screen TV fed from the laptop, with the sound plugged in to my nice sounding stereo. (Ahem, while sipping a nice red and eating a steak dinner no less!!) and not once did the band interaction come across to me as negative in any way whatsoever. One could argue that Bobby's (perceived) lack of interaction with JK demonstrates a very high level of trust and understanding. He knows JK is rock solid and will be there to deliver the goods for the band. That's high praise coming from someone that played alongside Garcia for as long as he did.
I loved the grins showing up on Phil's face watching JK, and vice versa, as well as the level of concentration on Bobby's face. He's basically up there driving that band and coordinating it's changes; taking on a very large band leader role. I think his contributions are often underappreciated. His singing in particular. Bobby's voice has improved dramatically since 2009, and his focus on getting in shape for the Furthur tours last year, IMO, has played a big part in his performance and stamina. You try doing what he does every night and see how easy it is! I think this band is entirely focused on their playing and performance. That's all.
p.s. **Loved** seeing Phil dancing and grooving before he had even played a note - like a kid that was totally jazzed about what they were about to play. Told my wife "If I've got that kind of energy and physical fitness when I'm 70 years old, I'll be a happy camper. Phil is making 20 year olds dance their asses off!!"
No better way to spend the back nine of his musical career and certainly no better way to enter his 7th decade as a human being. Shows what a big factor total joy in your in work can play in one's health and stamina. My mom is 3 years younger than Phil and I can't believe the difference in physical conditioning, youthful appearance, etc.
Way to go Bobby, Phil, and the rest of the band. You are all an inspiration to this 40 year old to stay focused on doing what I love and finding joy in everything I do. I want to be like Phil & Bobby 25 years from now. Dancing my butt off!!
p.p.s Attention Furthur - PLEASE PLEASE get yourselves teed up for the ACL music festival in 2011. You'd be welcomed with open arms!

Booby has always looked disengaged when the music gets serious, he gets that spaced out stare going but it doesn't mean that he's having a bad time. For all we know his dinner wasn't agreeing with him, you can't read too much into that stuff.
Watched the stream, great video and audio, they did a really good job with it. First set seemed rather normal with few highlights, even the Cumberland didn't really get going (at least by P&F standards), but everything was very well played and a good set up for the second set.
Stephen had 1976 written all over it; long jam with a lot of twists and turns and then a really well executed return to the main theme. Great stuff, this is the jam that I'll remember as making me a JK believer. I thought a NFA would have been a great choice out of this, crowd would have loved it, but the Jack Straw was well played if perhaps a bit slow. Phil and John working very well together. Fantasy is one of those songs that I lost interest in after hearing it three times, it just always sounds the same to me, but it was good and the Eyes that followed was stratospheric. This seems to be one of the signature songs for this lineup, John just wails on it and Phil was loving it. Great key lead by Jeff and Russo was flailing like a madman. Days Between was well done but Bob was way to Shantneresque for me on this one, let John sing it. Help-> Slip took me back top the '76 sound, especially the beginning of Slip that took a while to develop instead of just blasting off right away. Really well done and a fantastic transition into Franklin's. My only complaint here was that they've been putting this combo in the same slot for a long time, I'd like to see it as a first set ender or earlier in the second set sometime. It made it obvious that the end of the set was near. The GDTRFB was smoking and a nice upbeat ender for a good set with the WBYGN tacked on as a nice treat. US Blues was a bit to predictable, I would have used it as a set opener for the second set or followed it up with something off beat like Satisfaction (which would have fit given the times we're living in).
I've really been won over by this lineup. They combine some of the best elements of different Dead eras; the rhythm make up of the early 70's, the sonic quality of the late 80's, and the smooth jamming style of '76 and '77. Russo tends to be a tad sloppy at times but I think that works for this lineup, Molo would almost be too tight for what they're attempting to do. Phil is playing great and obviously having a great time, Bobby is Bobby, and John allows those two to play in the manner and style to which they became accustomed over so many tears. Minor complaints are who is singing what songs (and the trading verses and lines thing a la Ramblin' Rose is a bit too cute) and the occasional slow rhythms (Masterpiece and Jack Straw) but that's minor gripes, overall they've really gelled and are creating some exciting music. Really looking forward to the Mann this weekend.
Nateva show was awesome, killer scene, tons of room to roam and dance, no traffic, non existant security, superb sound. As far as the further performance....Ive been to several now, Wallingford, Asbury park, 12/30 and New Years, Manchester, Lowell and Nateva. I have seen this band progress since early inception and in my opionion keep getting better and better. With that being said, I enjoyed the Nateva show as a whole the most out of all the shows I have been blessed to see. The energy was awesome, everything was well executed, no train wrecks, sweet jams and all in all an awesome experience. Cant wait to go again.
thanks for the setlists and reviews!!
Sorry for being gone so long and chiming in so late on this one...
There was mention in this string about "cutting it short" or feeling rushed. I too sensed that as well and am left wondering if the band has a curfew. The jams dont end abruptly, but they do meander off into a transition earlier than you want them too because they are sooo sweeet. I don't think we are seeing as much freedom in the jams as we do with Ratdog or PLQ (miss that lineup), etc...and you cant just add water...I think there is something to the new shoe or hired gun aspect of things. New shoes take a while to break in, even if they look and feel awesome. Excuse me while I go put on my old comfortable John Molo High Tops and re-listen to a modified Franklin's Tower from days past...lol
"All good things in all good time"

>>>>>> freedom in the jams as we do with Ratdog
Oh man THAT'S one association I'd never thought I'd see in print - sorta like Military Intelligence or Government Worker . . .
Given some of the discussion in this particular show review regarding the on-stage relationship between Weir & JK I thought it of value to post a timely and appropriate article published today in the Ottowa Citizen quoting Bob Weir on JK:
Excerpt from the article, linked below:
After last year's Dead tour, he and Lesh formed Furthur, recruiting musicians from Weir's solo band RatDog and finding a talented lead singer who knew the material.
Singer-guitarist John Kadlicik was an obvious choice; he was "Jerry" in Dark Star Orchestra, a popular and meticulous Grateful Dead cover band from Chicago.
"He's conversant in not only the material but also the M.O.," Weir says. "He knows how to drift a bit, he knows how to listen, and if a given tune is trying to lean into a different key, he knows how to go with that, or how to provide resistance."

Did anyone here tape the show? Not up on all the regular sites and would love to get a copy. Also hoping that someone recorded Derek and others...Any advice on how to chase these down would be greatly appreciated.
Also, Bob and John are fine.
The music is still grand. We should feel thankful that the boys are still touring!
